Publisher’s Letter

Starting a new tradition of any kind just takes a wee bit of imagination, inspiration, and a little motivation. We hope our cover story will give you all three, as we’ve laid out some of the state’s top experiences to help make the holidays extra special.

We’ve included lighting ceremonies, holiday markets, live performances, and more. You’ll read about some time-honored traditions like the “Circle of Lights” in downtown Indianapolis, and some newer events like Peru’s Christkindlmarkt, which just started in 2019.

Our “Holiday Shopping Guide” pages are filled with great ideas on how to plan a weekend trip around a favorite pastime… shopping! You’ll see listings featuring locally-owned boutiques, small town charm, warehouse sales, toy shops, and other spots that will help round out your holiday shopping adventures.

In our “Sweetest Treats” story, you’ll learn about Gilbert’s Candy & Confections in Chesterton, a locally-owned candy shop that’s become a true destination. We’ve covered lots of other sugary stops around Indiana, including Martinsville Candy Kitchen where you can see candy canes being made on-site.

We wanted to give our readers some new ideas on how to enjoy the autumn season. So, our “History With Mystery” feature will send you on some “ghostly” adventures…all in good fun, of course. You’ll read about ghost tours, haunted buildings, and some special events fit for the whole family.

And as always, be sure and check out our website, travelindiana.com for even more trip ideas.

HOLIDAY 2022

of sorts, has been drawing in crowds for more than 35 years. And you can’t miss The Nutcracker, performed by the Indianapolis Ballet at the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre. This iconic holiday classic runs December 16, 17, and 18. For an abbreviated version of this Tchaikovsky masterpiece, check out the Nutcracker Sweets, the holiday tradition you know and love, deliciously

bite-sized. It’s performed at The Toby at Newfields December 9, 10, and 11.

The Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington will also be presenting The Nutcracker at the Musical Arts Center. This year’s performances will be December 1, 2, 3 at 7:30, and December 3 and 4 at 2 p.m.

Another logical place to start your trek might be the town of Santa Claus While it celebrates Christmas all year long, some of its December traditions include chestnuts roasting on an open fire at Santa’s Candy Castle, Christmas dinner with Santa at Santa’s Lodge and

Wherever you set out, be sure to make a stop in Bloomington, where the Courthouse Square sparkles under a Canopy of Lights created from miles of bulbs and switched on by none other than Santa himself. In nearby Brown County, where shopping for artistic and unusual gifts is a year-round attraction, a new tradition begun last year is the Christkindl Market , where artists and other vendors will make shopping fun and easy at the three-day event in Coachlight Square.

Choosing gifts is a nighttime affair in Columbus at the annual “Not So Silent Night.” This is an event where stores stay open late and shoppers enjoy carolers, food and rides in a horse-drawn carriage. In the city’s architecturally significant City Hall one central Christmas tree reflected in a semicircle of windows makes it seem to multiply.

One tradition in Morgan County is the Candy Kitchen in Martinsville, where visitors can watch the seasonal treats being made and then sample them. Martinsville, and his brother organizes the event. In addition to live music will be holiday characters, carriage rides and a train on which kids can take an excursion.

Another tasty happening in Martinsville is the Cookie Stroll, where hundreds of volunteer bakers donate their wares. Participants buy a “passport” that entitles them to a cookie from each stop, usually about 30. A visit to Santa in the Park at Waverly Park will yield stories, refreshments in the historic church, and demonstrations by a blacksmith, a tinsmith and more -- all for free. In nearby Mooresville, this year is the 33rd year of the Victorian Christmas Celebration, with characters in costume, artisan booths, street vendors and a shuttle to transport visitors around town.

In Kokomo the Seiberling Mansion takes the holiday spotlight. While it is

open all year for tours, decorating it for the holidays has been a local tradition since 1991-- the home’s 100th birthday. Visitors enjoy a stunning collection of beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, garlands and thousands of twinkling lights -– both inside and out. Decorations are created on a theme that changes each year.

“There isn’t a more elegant place to celebrate the holiday season than the Seiberling Mansion,” says Sherry Matlock, manager of the Greater Kokomo Visitors Bureau. “The Seiberling Mansion is exquisitely decorated for the holidays and is definitely worth a visit.”

weekend there are Santa train rides, a Christmas open house, refreshments, live entertainment and a Christmas Parade.

Speaking of Chistkindlmarkts, don’t miss the one in Carmel, which truly brings the charm of a long-standing German tradition to Central Indiana. This open-air holiday market runs during special hours November 19-December 30. Here you’ll find a blend of traditional German foods, drinks, and gifts sold from small wooden huts.

While you’re in Carmel, check out The Cake Bake Shop, which becomes a winter wonderland during the holidays.

Cruis’n the HoliJay Lights at the Fairground in Portland is a new tradition begun last year. A true community project, this drive-through light display is a collaboration between citizens and local businesses. The Jay County Chamber holds its Winterfest here, providing a walk-through experience that includes carriage rides, cookie and ornament decorating, and a 4-H Petting Zoo. Santa will be there some days, too.

In Madison, you find nearly 900 individually-decorated trees at the annual “Festival of Trees,” which premieres Thanksgiving weekend and runs through Christmas day. The 123 Mill Street cellar

an all-out festive celebration. During the train ride, you’ll visit with Santa and other Christmas characters, enjoy scenery and outdoor displays along the route, and much more.

In Newton County the Forest of Lights is back at Fair Oaks Farms with a half-mile trail through the woodland past creative and artistic lighting scenes. Bonfire pits in the middle of the trail make an ideal setting for s’mores and hot chocolate as well as the Forest Pub that provides fun adult concoctions. New this year is an ice-skating rink, with skate assist for children and adults and skate rentals provided as well as an ice slide.

Elkhart County glows during this special time of year.

Winter Wonderland

Holiday Lights is an annual event at the Wellfield Botanic Gardens, one of the true gems of this area, which lights

its gardens with some 1.5 million lights. The Ruthmere Museum decorates its historic mansion in themes to reflect the Christmas season that are playful, fun and consistent with the classic Beaux Arts style architecture and styling of the home.

Nearby Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy is a lighted drive-through event on the grounds of the Shipshewana Flea Market that draws carloads from all around the area. And in the run-up to Christmas, the Blue Gate Theatre here will host performances of “Our Christmas Dinner,” “A Very Electric Christmas,” “Salute to the Stars: Country Christmas,” “Lee Greenwood Christmas,” and more.

For even more festive holiday shows, check out the Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville where you can see Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and Santa Claus The Musical.

In Hammond they celebrate with “‘A Christmas Story’ Comes Home.”

This holiday tradition showcases seven animated window displays, each depicting a scene from the classic holiday movie. Hammond was the home of the author, Jean Shepherd, and where the movie was set. Visitors can relive their childhood memories of Santa and that long-soughtafter Christmas present while strolling through the exhibit, admiring the decorated Christmas trees, shopping in the gift shop or visiting with Santa.

FRENCH LICK RESORTHolidays at

If you’ve visited French Lick Resort during the holidays, you know it’s an experience like none other. If you haven’t, put it at the top of your 2022 wish list.

And if you’re the type who loves putting up holiday decorations early and leaving the tree up a few weeks beyond Christmas, French Lick and West Baden are your holiday spirit animal. The magic of the season always lasts a little longer here.

Tree Lighting Ceremonies & Christmas Season

If there’s one day all year that’s a gottasee type of experience at French Lick Resort, it’s the tree lighting ceremony. With two historic hotels on property each with their own tree lightings, you’ve got two chances to catch it.

West Baden Springs Hotel’s tree lighting is Saturday, November 12 and French Lick Springs Hotel follows on Saturday, November 19. Both hotels fill up well in advance for the occasion, so you’ll want to make reservations soon to witness all the

Throughout the rest of the holidays, the little ones can get a picture with Santa on weekends, write a letter to St. Nick with a reply sent home, or make a stuffed buddy at Santa’s toymaker workshop. There’s also story time and cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus.

Even just admiring all the dazzling holiday decorations (which stay up until the second week of January) could be a trip unto itself. From the holiday village and famous gingerbread house on the upper level of the Event Center, to the dozen Christmas trees and half-million holiday lights resort-wide, this winter wonderland is a sight to behold.

Thanksgiving

No cooking. No dishes. No, you’re not dreaming.

It’s all feasting and all relaxing when you spend Turkey Day at French Lick and West Baden. If you’re in the market for a destination Thanksgiving, French Lick and West Baden have you covered with impressive spreads — both slightly different; each loaded with dozens of tasty options just like you’d have at grandma’s house. Take all that holiday cooking off your plate, and maybe start a new holiday tradition in the process.

There’s more to enjoy, too: Tom the Turkey Run to get your appetite worked

up, and Bounce Bash for the kids featuring bounce houses and video games all weekend. And don’t forget Family Photography Weekend, an ideal opportunity to score that professional family photo for the Christmas cards.

New Year’s Eve

When’s the last time you really celebrated New Year’s Eve in style?

Whether it’s a date night for two or more of a party with the whole crew, both of French Lick Resort’s Rio-themed New Year’s celebrations are a spectacle not to be missed. Ditch the PJ’s for the formalwear, and treat yourself to a rock-star New Year’s for once.

festivities: the lighting of the 40+ foot tall trees, the treats, activities, music, and all the other little surprises that get you in the spirit. (West Baden’s ceremony is exclusive to guests staying at the hotel that night, while French Lick’s ceremony is open to the public.)

At French Lick Springs Hotel, ring in 2022 with a Brazilian-inspired menu, live entertainment and a Champagne toast at midnight. West Baden Springs Hotel’s gala under the iconic dome includes live music and dancing, and a mini dessert buffet before the traditional midnight Champagne toast ushers in the new year.

Celebrate Autumn & the Holidays in Chesterton

Autumn is a rustling, murmuring time. In no other season of the year are we more likely to be surprised by nostalgia. In its mellow golden days and chill cozy nights our imaginations drift like woodsmoke, the past like some marvelous spice seems to seep into the present, and the line between now and once-upon-a-time—between here and very-far-away—is never thinner, more prone to dissolving.

In the autumn we reminisce, we dream, and we tell tales. Here in Chesterton, Indiana, the Gateway to the Dunes, hard by the shoreline of mysterious Lake Michigan, people still speak of the woman sometimes seen swimming in the surf or running along the beach. No woman, though, but a specter, the ghost of Alice Mabel Gray—nicknamed

Diana of the Dunes by the press—who escaped a world too much with her in Chicago to live a recluse’s life in a shack on the beach, until her death in 1925.

One needn’t believe in ghosts, of course, to learn something from them. Ghost stories are folk memories, and when told well, on the very site of the spiriting, they conjure a long-ago time and place as haunting as any spook. This autumn come to Chesterton and hear its secret history. Chesterton Ghost Tours (www.Chesterton www. chestertonghosttours.net) and Chaos Haunted & Historical Tours (www. chaostrips.com) will lead you through the old neighborhoods where some residual presences may yet tarry at the scene of the crime or passion’s last gasp.

There’s no finer place in Northern

Indiana to spend an Indian Summer’s day than Chesterton and celebrate the ripeness and plumpness of the season. On Saturdays through October, enjoy fall’s bounty abounding at the European Market in Downtown Chesterton, the preeminent farmers market in Indiana. On Wednesday afternoons through October, sample the best Northwest Indiana‘s farmers and food artisans have to offer, at the Coffee Creek Farmers Market

On Sundays, stroll the Upsadaisy Market , beneath the scarlet and gold of Chesterton’s Thomas Centennial Park, and take your pick of wares handmade and tooled by local craftspeople

Visit Chesterton this autumn, where the past is closer than you think.

CIRCLE OF LIGHTS®

PRESENTED BY IBEW 481

Downtown Indy Inc.’s Circle of Lights® presented by IBEW 481 - Indy’s most time-honored holiday tradition –celebrates its 60th anniversary on Friday, Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving. The festive lighting celebration features a made-for-TV show exclusively on WTHR Channel 13 in unison with the live, inperson event starting at 7 p.m. Gather around Monument Circle for live music, special holiday activations, festive food and beverages, and more while awaiting the arrival of Santa and flip of the switch shortly before 8 p.m.

Stretching from top to bottom, the Soldiers & Sailors Monument will showcase its iconic 52 garland strands with 4,784 LED colored lights while Victory stands tall and proud as the “tree” topper. The Monument will also be surrounded by 26 larger-than-life toy soldiers and sailors and 26 peppermint sticks. The lights on Monument Circle, activated on Nov. 25, will remain a permanent installation throughout the holiday season until they come down on Jan. 13 with help from IBEW 481.

Monument Circle will also incorporate lighting exhibits, video projections and holiday music every evening as part of the multi-million dollar Shining A Light on

Arts and Culture program on the Circle. A diverse array of video presentations will highlight the season’s religious and secular holiday celebrations, along with the nightly “Signature Salute” honoring Indiana military veterans. These immersive videomapped displays transform Monument Circle into a captivating snow globe visitors can explore and get lost in!

Seasonal Fun in LaGrange County

Plan a “color tour” with LaGrange County’s “Off the Beaten Path” selfguided trail and discover unique backroad treasures through the tranquility of the Amish countryside. Autumn’s crisp air and beautiful bright colors inspire travelers to enjoy the splendor of a country drive. Cooler weather is ideal for a self-guided trail where you can admire the fall foliage. Fall is also harvest season which is an ideal way to experience the Amish culture, including the collecting of hay to feed their livestock over the winter.

Barn quilts celebrate tradition in the Amish and Mennonite culture. Originated in Pennsylvania by Pennsylvania-Dutch farmers, barn quilts and primitive stars were believed to protect the farm and bring good fortune. In LaGrange County, barn quilts can be seen on barns, homes, and businesses all around our towns and countryside. The trail will guide you to each barn quilt while enjoying picturesque autumn leaves.

Stay a while, enjoy the sights, and walk or ride your bike along the Pumpkinvine Trail. Take the family to the Pumpkinvine trailhead located at North Park in downtown Shipshewana. The paved trail will be in full autumn bloom while you enjoy the sights and experience more of the beautiful countryside.

As the cooler air approaches and fall turns to winter, turn your attention to the area’s upcoming holiday events. Plan to be in Shipshewana the first Saturday of November for the Lighting of Shipshewana Parade and Ceremony

Christmas lights displayed in a mile-and-ahalf-long symphony of colorful lights scenes for this upcoming holiday season.

The trail will take you to backroad shops and barn quilts throughout LaGrange County. Pick up a map at the Shipshewana Visitors Center or print your own copy from their website. Make it a new seasonal tradition and drive out to the many Amish cottage shops sprinkled along the trail. You’ll be surprised to find candles made with honey, hand weaved baskets lined with fabric, and handmade leather belts, handbags, and wallets. Enjoy the sights and smells of homemade breads and cinnamon rolls, or snack on fresh cheese curds along the way.

See the whole town get together to celebrate the wonder of the holiday and get in some Christmas shopping—the downtown shops stay open until 9 p.m.

Experience Shipshewana’s Lights of Joy. This holiday tradition for the whole family includes a drive-through light display experience which home to two million LED

Plan to stay in one of LaGrange county’s seasonally-decorated hotels and enjoy “Noel” A Celebration of Christmas at the Michiana Events Center MEC. Two hours of nonstop Christmas excitement for the whole family, this amazing show features beautiful horses with talented riders from all around the world. See Noel singers and dancers perform. SeT ouT on an Indiana ghosT adventure ThIs Season for Some Scary, and noT-So-Scary, fun.

That chill you feel in Indiana’s au tumn air is probably just a change in the seasons…or is it more? For years, history buffs and curious travel ers have set out on “ghost” adventures throughout the state, enjoying a light hearted spin on mixing “history with mystery.”

One of Indiana’s oldest bed and break fast inns, the Story Inn in Nashville, has a long and “storied” history. So it’s no surprise that there have been claims of unexplained experiences. “We‘ve had sightings listed in the guest book since the ‘80s,” said Rich Hofstetter, who runs the inn. “There have been smells, doors open and shut, and lights come on. We have people who smell tobacco. We might say there are spirits here. Some people say they have proof, but I’m skeptical.”

The Story Inn has been called one of the Midwest’s premiere inns and restau rants, and the entire town is an historic district. In the sawmill, there are heated tile floors and a hot tub. Food from their on-site garden is served in the restaurant.

For those who dare, book a stay and ask for the “Blue Lady” room, where past guests claim to see a lady roaming around in a blue gown.

At the Roads Hotel in Atlanta, just north of Noblesville, you can take part in public or private paranormal investiga tions, all for a good cause. Proceeds go to the Lost Limbs Foundation, which was started in 2014 and provides financial assistance to the families of amputee children who are in need of medical and prosthetic assistance.

Built in 1893, the Roads is a two-story, rectangular, Queen Anne style frame building featuring a two-story front porch

and cross gable. Owned at that time by Newton Roads and his wife Clara, it was a popular stop for Al Capone and John Dillinger, and was even a speakeasy for a short period of time during prohibition. Between the infamous gangsters and the tragic deaths of the hotel owner’s family, sightings of ghosts have “run rampant.”

“It’s not a functioning hotel,” Mike Couch, who operates the hotel and is founder of the Lost Limbs Foundation, said. “We have public paranormal inves tigations as well as private investigations. One Saturday a month we hold a public investigation from 6 p.m until 2 a.m. for $40 a person, limited to ten people. Peo ple new to it may bring a camera and turn on the mike on their Apple phone.”

In Sullivan County, Brenda Cook gives tours in the tiny town of Merom, pop ulation 191. She’s been a paranormal investigator for 15 years and also goes on tours herself. One of the highlights is the Merom Livery House. “It’s a haunted house that used to be a boarding house,” says Brenda. “There have been a lot of paranormal instigations at the house.” During her tours, guests can use digital cameras, EMF detectors, “sprit boxes,” and flashlights.

In the early 1800s, the state of Indiana was required to provide residence for the poor and disabled. The building in which the Scott County Heritage Center and Museum is housed was built in 1892 for this specific purpose. The building would remain at capacity until 1973, when the last inmate was moved out.

The building then became county of fices and court while the courthouse was under renovations. The building sat empty until the Preservation Alliance took pos

session of the building to be used as the present-day Scott County Museum. Since the early 1970s people working in the building have reported hearing footsteps, voices call out their names and even a few actual full-bodied apparitions. Today, the museum conducts paranormal investigations on Friday and Saturday nights. Cost is $10 per person. Six-hour investigations are also offered for $200.

Greg Steffe, the Director of the Kosciusko County Historical Society, has been a part of the Old Jail Museum team for over three years and previously led the Spirits of Warsaw Ghost Tours in downtown Warsaw. “In the 17 years I’ve been doing this I’ve investigated some of the most haunted locations in the United States,” Steffe said. “Some of the most active locations I’ve ever seen have been right here in our own community.” Spots include the jail, Barbee Hotel, and “Devils Backbone.”

At the Indiana Dunes National Park, the ghost of “Diana of the Dunes” has reportedly been seen running along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Diana was a 1920s-era Dunes advocate who lived in the park. Today, you can take the “Diana of the Dunes Dare,” a trail route that follows along the West Beach Dune Succession Trail.

To enjoy some more lighthearted fun for the whole family, mark your calendar for these popular not-so-spooky events:

ZooBoo at the Indianapolis Zoo runs October 5 through October 31, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays (open until 9 p.m. Friday ad Saturday). There are Halloween activi ties, amazing animals, and pumpkins galore. October weather means active animals, colorful foliage, and a new season to explore. Com bine that with engaging, hands-free activities, spooktacular costumes and trick-or-treating, and you’ve got an unforgettable family tradition.

At Conner Prairie, the annual Headless Horseman Festival runs Sundays through Thursdays October 6-30. During the festival, you can take the iconic haunted hayride through Conner Prairie’s grounds and see if you encounter the horseman himself; enjoy a barrel train ride for little ones; dive into the legend of Amsel Farm and explore the cursed ground of the Haunted Maze; see spooky shows; and more.

Don’t miss the 17th annual Haunted Woods Trail on the Fulton County Historical Society grounds, four miles north of Rochester on U.S. 31, October 21-22 and October 28-29. Hours are 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. or until the crowd is done. Free tram rides are available from museums and park to the haunted area. There will be spooky scenes in the woods with many different themes, and food will be available.

It was 2020. Like so many others, David Gilbert found himself at home much of the time. And more than a little bored. So he learned how to make hard candies.

And then he and his wife Jennifer put together a jigsaw puzzle of an oldfashioned candy shop. Their daughter stood looking at it and said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we opened a candy store?”

So they did. In December 2020 it opened for pick-up.

Gilbert’s Candy & Confections, in Chesterton, is now a brick-and-mortar store that offers a variety of items not found in many stores. There are the Gilberts’ handmade chocolate bars in a variety of flavors that include the root beer float bar and dark chocolate coffee bar, along with freeze-dried Skittles called Freetles. There are also not-sotypical items that include CrackCorn, Hammond’s bars, and Endorfin Foods. Kids’ candy is vetted by the Gilberts’ kids; think juvenile humor that means Sour Flush and Shark Bite. Dog treats are taste-tested by Wyatt, the family dog.

70 traveliN Holiday 202270 traveliN Holiday 2022

“We gravitate toward nostalgia,” David said. There are circus peanuts, Necco wafers, Charleston Chews. Many items have been suggested by customers.

Free samples are available. So, too, is a spinning wheel challenge called Bean Boozled with which customers take a chance. They’ll get one of two flavors of jelly beans – for example, peach or barf, juicy pear or booger, tutti-fruitti or stinky socks – and not know which flavor until they taste it. Jennifer says the notso-tasty flavors are “terrible.” And yet, spinning the wheel is wildly popular.

“No matter what’s going on in the world, chocolate makes things a little better,” she adds.

McCord’s Candies in Lafayette, a city staple for decades, echoes that sentiment. Owners Angie and Billie Pattengale – new owners as of June 2022 – say their mission is “serving smiles.” Here, a trip down memory lane includes McCord’s hand-pulled candy canes during the holiday season.

Candy canes are big at Martinsville Candy Kitchen, too. Candy cane pour

times in November and December are gotta’-go-to events.

Another favorite with more than a century of history is Tell City Pretzels It, too, underwent changes in ownership, in 2009; and in location, just last year. The age-old recipe moved from Tell City to Jasper, where they added a pretzeltwisting machine as well as soft pretzels in the new Pretzelville lineup. When the holidays approach, there are chocolatecovered pretzels in red canisters.

The pretzel factory is open to the public, with tours that invite everyone to hand-twist a couple pretzels like they did in the past. It’s called the “tour, taste and twist experience.” “It’s been hugely successful,” says owner Brad Smith.

Another venture with more than a century of history is Schimpff’s Confectionery in Jeffersonville. See candy-making demonstrations as well as a candy museum. It’s like stepping back in time with the 1950s original soda fountain and old school candy jars. Take time for a tour. And check out their signature Cinnamon Red Hots.

In Hagerstown, the newness at Abbott’s Candies is the bright pink paint. The caramels and chocolates are the triedand-true originals, beginning with William C. Abbott in 1890. Even the boxes retain the look of the past – because customers complained when Abbott’s tried to “update” them. “We’ll change our boxes when Coca-Cola changes the shape of its bottles,” says Jay Noel, owner since 2012.

The high point of a visit is a tour, especially of the pouring, cutting and wrapping of caramels. There’s even a candle that smells like caramels. A worker puts a stylish “A” for Abbott, by hand, on each piece of chocolate.

An “A” also goes on the belly of each gummi bear at Albanese Candy in Merrillville. On gummi worms, too, and jet fighters and sharks and … well, all of them. Crazy-popular are holiday gummies.

In Portland, a candy shop is centered around the fudge made by Sharlette Cole’s family when she was a child. “That’s what we did on the farm, in the wintertime, for entertainment,” she says. Malted milk balls and double-dipped peanuts are the biggest candy sellers at Sharlette’s Fudgery and Candies. With fudge, it’s chocolate/peanut butter. With cookies, sugar cookies.

Then there’s South Bend, home to Notre Dame University as well as the company that got its start making chocolates for the school. The South Bend Chocolate Company has been recognized as the fastest growing chocolate company in the nation with outlets not only in the Hoosier state but elsewhere. There’s a lively history lesson in the tours here that include … well, … chocolate surprises.

In Madison, Cocoa Safari Chocolates is an independent gourmet chocolate shop where they create chocolates and

confections in their on-site kitchen. Each one is hand-dipped and hand-decorated. Small batches ensure the freshest chocolates available using premium quality chocolate and ingredients.

Even more possibilities are listed on the Indiana Foodways Alliance “Sweet Temptations” trail. There are 51 suggested stops that include Ghyslain in Union City, Wolf’s Fine Handmade Chocolates in Attica, Charlie’s Caramel Corn and Candy Shop in Vincennes. A newbie is Uranus Fudge Factory in Anderson. An off-the-wall nobody-knowswhat-to-expect kind of entertainment venue that leads with fudge but includes dinosaurs, Zoltar the fortune teller, and –on the drawing board – a pollinator park.

Another sweet trail to check out is the “Coffee and Sweets Trail” in northwest Indiana, which includes local coffee and sweets shops near the Indiana Dunes National and State Parks. Each participating shop created a special Indiana Dunes-themed drink for customers to enjoy.

Also on the Sweet Temptations Trail is Indiana’s own Wick’s Pies Headquartered in Winchester, Wick’s has been making sweet treats—including their famous Sugar Cream Pie—for well over 70 years. Today, you can visit their  full service bakery cafe that makes 36 varieties of pie each day.

MELT INTO INDIANA GLASS CULTURE

Artists and craftsmen have created work for more than a century to establish Indiana as home to remarkable, functional, and decorative glass. Connecting a trail of 7 counties, the Indiana Glass Trail links today’s artists and glass-related venues throughout Eastern Indiana, bringing together the tradition and beauty of glass art so you can experience it first-hand. From artist studios and blown glass demonstrations, to glass-focused festivals and glass museums and classes, to the oldest glassworks in the U.S., this family-friendly trail highlights it all. Glass lovers have plenty to see and do in Indiana, and the trail brings it all together!

ANDERSON/MADISON COUNTY

Glass, in its most basic, everyday form, is utilitarian, a commodity. However, when guided by skilled hands it becomes art, rare and beautiful. Whether a spiral lifting skyward, a treasure commemorating a loved one, or a dome of color, Madison County boasts some amazing examples at Carol’s Legacy Crystal, Anderson Museum of Art, Anderson University, and the annual Elwood Glass Festival.
