Wine Tasting A
fter decades of waning popularity, global wine consumption is on the rise.
Young millennials are drinking more wine than older generations; drinking wine is fashionable again. Sparked by increased demand internationally, our wine industry is flourishing, new producers and styles are emerging, to meet this surge in demand, from younger drinkers. Liquor outlets host in-store promotions, wine tasting events are held and festivals are in vogue. There is no longer a need or travel to the wine lands - now the farm comes to you. Wine festivals give producers direct access to their customers allowing them to build their brands. Reputations are won and lost on consumers’ opinions of taste and quality relative to price. This invaluable instantaneous feedback is any marketer’s dream. If you haven’t attended a wine festival, go, especially if your knowledge of wine and procurement behaviour is limited to the supermarket bargain bin. This is a brilliant way to open up a world of infinite wine tasting possibilities, consider how many days it would take to visit twenty wine farms. These events have anything from 10 to 300 wine farms represented, and fear not wine plebeians, if the thought of exposing your oenology ignorance in public intimidates you, I have complied some tips on how to navigate a wine tasting like a pro.
1.
Visit the most exclusive wine farms first.
You did not venture out on a Friday evening to taste that cheap plonk you drink at home did you? I know you’re too much of a cheapskate to actually buy any bottle of wine over R50.00 - so at least use that entrance fee you begrudgingly paid to your advantage. This is not the time to spit (see point 6). Savour
every drop of liquid gold. Leave the cheap wine until last. By that stage it’s all going to taste the same anyway.
2.
Swirl and sniff.
3.
Sip and gargle.
4.
Give intelligent feedback.
Don’t let the wine touch your lips yet. First, dramatically hold the glass up to the light (holding the stem) and swirl. This is to aerate the wine. Concentrate. Don’t swirl too vigorously and spill red wine all over your white shirt. You will just end up looking utterly sozzled. (I speak from personal experience.) Then, stick your nose near the edge of the glass and inhale the aromas deeply. Don’t stick your nose right into the glass, you will just end up coughing uncontrollably from the alcohol fumes.
The idea here is not to up-end your glass and down it. Take a generous sip, gracefully, and think of the wine as mouthwash. Gently swish it around your mouth (without the sound effects please), allowing the flavours to wash over your taste buds. Don’t throw your head back, open wide and gargle. That’s guaranteed to get you kicked out. Now remember not to smile for the rest of the evening, red wine stained teeth are not sexy.
At this point, the winemaker or representative is going to expect you to give an opinion of their masterpiece. Keep comments like, “Jislaaik, that’s lekker,” or “Tastes grapey” to yourself. Even if the wine tastes appalling despite one bottle costing more than what you spend on twelve – don’t say so. This will merely draw further attention to your amateur status. Here, it would be wise to have a few standard responses memorised such as, “Smooth.,Robust - yet delicate, Fruity and complex with a lingering finish.” Now walk away briskly before your naïveté is exposed.
Fern of the Vine
For Dummies 5.
Don’t look stupid.
6.
Spit!
If you’re unable to scramble away to the next table before you’re engaged in conversation, say nothing! Allow the winemaker to gush about how many months his baby was matured in French oak and how it affected the malolactic fermentation. Fold your arms, furrow your brow and keep a pensive expression plastered on your face. Nothing says amateur like a stupid grin, rather use the occasional nod and smile of recognition sparingly (like whenever he says wine).
Unless it’s expensive (see point 1) don’t swallow anything. Use those spittoons! I have gotten utterly plastered by not following this rule. If at this point the room is spinning, find a wall to lean on and commission an Uber. Slap your cheeks, splash your face with cold water (not the leftover wine in your glass) and get to that car. At this point, that stupid grin may be useful to deflect attention away from your ungainly, sprawling limbs.

RUSH
As a gaming fanatic and a teenager firmly in touch with his inner nerd, I was super excited for the Rush eSports event on the 20th of July. Video games, techno gadgets, food and of course the cosplay ladies were enough to have my fellow gamers clearing their misted glasses, and snorting with excitement. Jokes aside it was great to see gamers of all shapes and sizes, and even non-gaming “NewB’s” come together to enjoy eSports in all its glory. eSports brings people from many different walks of life together, and for many different reasons. To demonstrate this I conducted interviews with two very different individuals brought together by a mutual passion for eSports.

Finding Fabulous with Keagan Lamb endemic brands, like American Express and Coca Cola are now getting involved with sponsoring. Which is good for them as it gives them a new platform to market particularly to millennials, who don’t necessarily engage in traditional media.
Q. What are some of the biggest eSports? A. There is quite a wide variety of eSports on offer at the
moment, some of the biggest are - CSGO which sources large prize pools, there’s also the Dota 2 international which has the top prize pool of 20 mil dollars, Overwatch has just started their new league and they’re hosting a lot of competitions overseas particularly in Asia.
Q. What are your goals for this event and other events in the future? A. We want to try host a lot more mini events, the primary objective of the Rush event was to talk to the existing eSports community, and our hope with the long term view is to try and engage more casual gamers. Targeting people that might just be playing online, but are not fully integrated into the eSports community, to try get them involved. Q. What is your target market? Is it primarily millennials or have you seen some older players coming through? Lauren Das Neves Lauren works for NAG, which was the company responsible for setting up the LAN competitions at Rush. She has a spirited passion for eSports and the gaming community.
Q. Explain to us some of the exciting things at this event, and breakdown what RUSH is all about. A. RUSH is primarily focussed on eSports, we do the annual Rage expo, which turns 15 this year, and that’s been all about gaming, geek culture and technology so with Rush we want to put more of a spotlight on eSports and give it its own platform. People that don’t know about eSports can come and experience what it’s all about. Passionate eSports enthusiasts can come and get involved meet the players meet the teams live in action. Q. How do you go about setting up an event like this particularly setting up all the equipment and necessary technology for the gamers? A. With NAG and of course RAGE, we have made a lot of good relationships over the years and I’m very passionate about eSports. I am the only one in our office that waves the eSports flag, so its been a passion project of mine and I’ve really been chipping away at that block and trying to get everybody excited about it. So this year I just decided it’s time to get a whole lot of different games in one room, get tournament hosts together, and afford people the opportunity to learn what eSports is.
A. Depends on the game, so for example Player Unknown Battlegrounds, which is still in Beta at the moment, definitely had an older demographic of players at the mini competition at Rush. Then also a lot of the CSGO teams you can see some of the teams that have been around for 10 years. But it’s great to see some of the new up-and-coming teams. For example, at our Cod Competition this weekend you can see that there’s a lot of new players, which is also what we want- to get a lot of younger players to get onto the scene and grow them from there as well. Q. Why do you think people are drawn to eSports and what are some of the factors that make eSports attractive. A. I think it definitely speaks to your competitive nature, if you have a winning mentality its very appealing. The fact that you can play online and be anonymous, takes away stereotypes in that gamers can be nerdy, but they can also go to the gym, hold steady jobs and it’s interesting that we’ve been able to change that perception of what a gamer is through events such as RUSH.
Q. Do you think eSports has the potential to grow into a major sport to rival the likes of socccer and basketball in the future? A. Yes definitely, eSports is already massive overseas and

Q. Equipment is an important part of many sports, would you say the same for eSports? A. Equipment like headsets for communication, as well as being able to hear things in game that you might not hear without a good headset is very important. A good monitor also helps, the better monitors have faster response speeds so there’s less delay, and the colouring is also less effective on cheaper monitors. Q. What advice would you give to up and coming players who are still trying to make a name for themselves in the sport? A. Create your own opportunities do not wait for them. If you
Robert Monteiro Robert is a competitive Call of Duty player, who plays for Hi5 Gaming. RUSH was his first LAN competition and Robert and his team managed to pick up a well-deserved second place. Robert is an avid eSports competitor and at the age of 15 shows a lot of promise in the Call of Duty scene.
Q. From a player’s perspective, what do you think of this event compared to other events that you’ve been to? A. I think it was a really good event. If you look at other events held at the same time, their prize pools weren’t as much, and we got to play a whole lot of matches, we had seeding, bracket play and then of course the finals. So a lot of games, good practice and great prizes. Q. How competitive is a LAN event of this nature compared to online competitions? A. It’s a lot more competitive on LAN because you’re in person and you can see the opposition players, engage with them and play a bit of a mental game as well. 10

Q. What is you ultimate aim for your Call of Duty career? A. I don’t know how long my career is going to last because
of school and other commitments, so my aim currently is to play at as many events as possible, do the best that I can, and place well in my first year of competitive Call of Duty. I really want to play as much as possible - so I have qualified for RAGE, DGC and EGE, and I am sure there will be more LAN events coming up, so I will judge my standings from there.

aunched by Discover Africa in 2014, the HerdTracker application accurately tracks the great wildebeest migration in Kenya and Tanzania. This innovation has allowed wildlife enthusiasts and travellers real-time information on the location of the migratory herds, creating a unique exploration of this revered migration. Now, in 2017, HerdTracker updates offer crowd-sourced data. Using #Herdtracker anyone can share their sightings of the migratory herds and the location of the herds at the time of the sighting. This will automatically upload to the live feed, while real-time movement can be viewed on the migratory map. Detailed maps including popular river crossings and landmarks, as well as multiple photo and video sequences of wildebeest interactions, makes HerdTracker an exciting way to experience the great Wildebeest migration. Using #Herdtracker on Twitter allows anyone to contribute to tracking the migratory herds and become the eyes and ears for would-be Mara or Serengeti visitors. With over 800 updates in the last three years, HerdTracker still receives updates from lodges in the Masai Mara, Tanzania National Parks Authority rangers, pilots who fly over the Serengeti, safari guides on the ground and even hot air balloon operators. The additional twitter updates will provide an even more accurate depiction for travellers wanting to book a migration trip. The aim of the app is to eliminate uncertainty when booking safaris to watch the migratory herds, which can now be pin-pointed, something that wasn’t possible before. HerdTracker also offers live, online accommodation availability in relation to the migration.
“The enormity of tracking such a prolific wildlife event takes a collaborative effort and we value the contributions from our partners and now the public at large. We developed HerdTracker to help make planning the journey easier for our customers,” says Andre van Kets, co-founder of HerdTracker. So whether you’re planning a trip to the Serengeti or simply want to follow the movement of the herds, this is definitely an exciting application which makes tracking the Wildebeest migration not only possible, but enjoyable and interactive too.

The science of life
yurvedic medicine — also known as Ayurveda — is one of the world’s oldest holistic (whole-body) healing systems. Derived from its ancient Sanskrit roots — ‘ayus’ (life) and ‘ved’ (knowledge) — offers a rich, comprehensive outlook to a healthy life; its origins go back nearly 5,000 years. Ayurveda was expounded and practiced by spiritual rishis, who laid the foundations of the Vedic civilisation in India. They organised the fundamentals of life into proper systems.
and muscles from stiffness and makes all body movements free.
Ayurveda offers a unique blend of science and philosophy that balances the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components necessary for holistic health. The best thing about Ayurvedic treatment is that they are individualistic. The treatments are based on the five elements of the universe — Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Space. According to Ayurveda, each person will be influenced by certain elements more than others. This is because of their prakriti, or natural constitution.
Snehana is a warm oil therapy that is applied to the client. Snehana means ‘love’ and through this nourishing, nurturing, warming therapy the vata dosha is brought back into balance. It is also called the ‘potli massage’ or ‘herbal pouch treatment.’
Ayurveda categorises the different constitutions into three different doshas: Vata dosha: This is where the air and space elements dominate. Pitta dosha: This is where the Fire element dominates. Kapha dosha: This is where the Earth and Water elements dominate. An Ayurvedic physician takes into consideration these doshas to measure the equilibrium levels of the body and accordingly a wellness path is organised. For each element, there is a balanced and imbalance expression. An important goal of Ayurveda is to identify a person’s ideal state of balance, determine where they are out of balance, and offer interventions using diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, music, and meditation to re-establish this balance. Spa treatments that are based on Ayurvedic knowledge work at a very deep level to thoroughly cleanse the body of toxins and remove physiological imbalances. The treatments can be for general health and wellness or catered toward treating a specific ailment. Some of the well-known ones that assure radiance and invigoration include:
Abhyanga
The Abhyanga therapy treats the whole body physically, mentally and emotionally while balancing the doshas. Its rhythmic motion helps to relieve joints
Shirodhara
This is a powerful ayurvedic treatment that calms the nervous system and restores the body’s natural ability to heal. Lukewarm oil is poured in a continuous stream onto the forehead, while one receives a gentle massage on the head.
Snehana Therapy
Swedhana
Swedhana is a traditional steam therapy designed to open tissues with the saturation of heat and moisture. Once the tissues are open, deep seated toxins can be released through the pores of the skin, thereby reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and promoting healing and restoration.
Udwarthanama
This is a typical deep and dry massage using herbal powders. The dry powder massage helps to reduce blood cholesterol and obesity, while imparting mobility to the joints and strengthening the muscles.
Panchakarma
Panchakarma (five actions) is a cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind and consciousness. It is known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self-healing. The Panchakarma therapeutic process appears quite simple in its application. However, its effects are powerful and effective. Panchakarma is a unique, natural, holistic, health-giving series of therapeutic treatments that cleanses the body’s deep tissues of toxins, opens the subtle channels, and brings life-enhancing energy thereby increasing vitality, inner peace, confidence and well-being. It is important to note that the expertise and guidance of a Panchakarma specialist is a must for the diagnosis and therapy for optimal results.

C VERNAZZA
inque Terre is one of those places where even if you’re not familiar with the name, then you’ve probably seen pictures of incredible pink, yellow, orange and green houses clinging to the cliffs. The adorable houses not only defy gravity but lend a peaceful, calm vibe to these otherworldly towns. Four of the five towns have direct access to the sea so this means some quality swim time. Whether you’re wandering the narrow streets, tasting the region’s delicacies, having a photo shoot with your squad on the coast or helping locals in the vineyards, Cinque Terre has something for every travel taste and Busabout is here to help you discover it.
RIOMAGGIORE Riomaggiore is the most relaxed of the five towns and was originally home to one section of the Via Dell’Amore (The Walk of Love). Unfortunately major landslides and flooding in 2011 wiped out much of the path. However you can get an authentic experience by taking a dirt track over the mountain, meandering through vineyards on your way to Manarola.
48 hours in
Cinque Terre
Before you set off make sure to fill your tummy with some seafood snacks for the road from Mamma Mia takeaway. If you’re planning to stay for dinner in Riomaggiore, our pick is to head to Tattoria Via Dell’Amore. Snag yourself an outside table to watch the sunset and make sure to fill your glass with a drop (or several) of Sciacchetrà, a sweet dessert wine. This amber liquid is smooth with hints of honey and perfect for the end of a meal or paired with cheese.
MANAROLA Whether you’ve arrived via train, boat or using your own legs, Manarola is a town that is all about the food. Obviously being on the coast, all of the towns of Cinque Terre are big on seafood but in Manarola make sure to try the anchovies. The people here take great pride in bringing in the catch, so it’s fresh, salty and delicious! For something different head to La Scogliera and try the Linguine al Batti Batti. Batti Batti is a special type of shellfish only available in the Liguria region. If you’re not quite so brave to try foods out of your comfort zone then Il Portocciolo, a family run restaurant right on the

out a towel or hire an umbrella and chair for a small fee. Certainly an incredible bay to spend your days soaking up sun and cooling down in the beautiful azure waters. If you can summon the energy to leave your patch of sand, it’s worth checking out the Church of San Giovanni Battista with its distinctive exterior black and white stripes and be sure to try some Limoncello. For centuries, the town has been renowned for its production of lemons and other citrus fruit. In fact the local people here even call their version of Limoncello something different, limoncino, and is made from local lemons (of course) and olive oil. The perfect digestif to end your time in this coastal paradise!
harbour, will offer plenty of other tasty options. Speaking of the harbour, this is also one of the best places for a swim along the coast. Jump for joy off the rocks into the deep water and float on your back for pretty pastel house watching. Put your GoPro/phone/camera to good use and take a few happy snaps of all the boats parked up around the edge of the harbour or wait for sunset for a heady mix of colours as the lights of the town reflect on the sea.
CORNIGLIA All the towns are very conveniently connected via train so definitely purchase a daily ticket for the best value. Corniglia is the only village that has no sea harbour and this means more stairs (no skipping leg day here…) but the reward it the stellar views from high up. It’s the smallest town and usually the quietest due to being 100m above sea level. If you need motivation to climb the 382 steps up from the train station, here it is. This Northern region of Italy is famous for quite a few unique specialties, but PESTO… This is THE birthplace of the basil wonder topping! It’s is made with fresh basil, cheese, garlic, olive oil and pine nuts then poured over pasta. If that hasn’t gotten your mouth watering, there’s something wrong with your taste buds. Plus that walk up the stairs will have worked off any carbs you may indulge in. So wander the narrow cobbled
streets and eat at will. If you follow the signs for Marina you’ll also discover a hidden bay with bright emerald water to shed your clothes and get swimming in.
VERNAZZA Vernazza is probably the richest of the towns throughout history and this is reflected in the boutique houses. It was one of the villages most affected by the 2011 floods and much of the village was engulfed in mud, rocks and water. Much effort from locals and others helping out has restored it to its former glory but you can still help maintain some of the vineyard terraces by volunteering for the Tourists In The Wild project.
Busabout can hook you up with a sweet visit to the Cinque Terre region on their hop-on hop-off network. A three stop pass starts from R5720 (or R5440 for students) and an unlimited pass will cost R18 900 (R17960 for students) which will have you traversing the length and breadth of Europe at your leisure over the summer season. www.busabout.com #busabout Facebook and Twitter (@BusaboutSA)
RIOMAGGIORE
A fun way to help out the locals to maintain the heritage of vineyards, olive groves and keep Vernazza producing incredible local foods. Also originating from this area of Italy is Focaccia… often served paired with olive oil and salt but also sometimes has sage, onions and olive bits added in. Lunch anyone? Vernazza also has one of the best viewpoints in all the land so head on the walking path to Monterosso and look back on the harbour for your next picture perfect profile shot.
MONTEROSSO Monterosso is probably the busiest of the five villages and the main reason for this is the BEACH. Pebbles so small they resemble sand, take your pick to spread

Emmy Nominated Animated Series Superbook Available On DVD In South Africa In August 2017 Christian Art Media is excited to announce the release of the Emmy-nominated Superbook Series, in DVD format, in South Africa. Superbook has been broadcast in more than 106 countries, watched by more than 500 million people, and has been translated into 50 languages. Today, CBN and a team of Emmy-winning artists and storytellers, whose credits include Mulan, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, have collaborated to completely re-imagine the classic series, using the latest 3D CGI technology, for today’s audiences, from the ages of 6 years and upwards. In 1981, the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) created a children’s animated Bible series for the Japanese TV market. Little did they realise what an impact the series would have in Japan and around the world. The series was known as Animated Parent and Child Theater (アニメ 親子劇場, Anime Oyako Gekijõ), produced by Tatsunoko Productions in Japan, in conjunction with CBN in the United States. The English name for this series was Superbook. Research undertaken during and after the outreach, showed that this series was an unprecedented success. Over 8 million people a night watched Superbook on Japanese prime-time television, and the Bible became the nation’s best-selling book. By 1989, in the midst of economic and political turmoil, Superbook began broadcasting in the Soviet Union with astounding results. When Superbook aired during primetime on the Soviet National Channel, CBN received over 6 million letters from children, introducing an entire generation to the Bible. The Superbook YouTube Channel is a great source of exciting clips and testimonies from children: https://www.youtube. com/user/SuperbookTV
You’re More than a Personality Test Bestselling Author and TV Show Host Helps Readers Discover Their God-Wired Uniqueness There are a lot of personality and intelligence tests out there designed to label people and put them in a particular box. But Dr. Caroline Leaf says there’s much more to a person than a personality profile can capture. In her new book The Perfect You: A Blueprint for Identity, Dr. Leaf tackles this concept from theological, philosophical and scientific angles, challenging readers to think deeply about their identity and enabling them to apply these insights to their daily lives. “When people pursue an identity apart from God,” writes Dr. Leaf, “it leads to confusion. The more you step into your Perfect You, the more you will understand the blueprint of your identity, your purpose, and your part in his kingdom.” Drawn from thirty years of original research and twenty-five years of clinical experience, The Perfect You includes ground-breaking new insights and an eye-opening questionnaire designed to help readers understand their Perfect You. The UQ (You-Quotient) profile will help readers understand how they uniquely think, feel and choose; to increase their ability to mindfully and deliberately self-regulate; and to help them understand how they think when they are operating in their Perfect You so that they can recognise when they are operating outside of it.
