Keagan looks to the skies this issue to bring you some airline news, while Contiki entices us to the deep South to Munch! We hope you enjoy some of the fantastic productions that are in our theatres this month, or curl up with a bit of inspiration. See you in August.

I
resembled an excited child on Christmas morning, anticipation mounting, as I freed the cooled bottle of Hartenberg Wine Estate’s 2015, and ‘The Eleanor’ chardonnay from its white paper wrapping. One of the Cape’s oldest wine farms, dating back to 1692, Hartenberg is well known for consistently producing outstanding wines – receiving many high profile awards across their extensive range of reds and whites. Wines produced include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Ries-
ling, Merlot and Shiraz, as well as some great white and red blends. Situated on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills outside Stellenbosch the estate is passionate about nature conservation, as demonstrated through their sustainable farming practises and conservation programmes. Forming part of the estate’s range of Super Premium wines, ‘The Eleanor’ is the ideal wine to pay homage to Eleanor Finlayson, the Finlayson family’s matriarch. Strong and resolute yet imbued with sophistication and poise, she owned the farm (then known as Montagne) with her husband Maurice from 1948 to 1977. Previous vintages have already distinguished themselves in the wine industry, consistently receiving 4.5 star ratings in Platter’s Wine Guide, as well as a Gold medal at the 2012 International Wine and Spirits Competition. As a Chardonnay devotee, I was looking forward to treating my taste buds to this special bottle. Matured in French oak with ageing potential of two to eight years, this multi-faceted grand dame demanded a robust seafood dish to bring out her Pièce De Résistance. What ended up on my plate was lemon cream sole, stir-fried prawns languishing in garlic butter and creamy parmesan potato gratin. ‘The Eleanor’ is a glorious buttery blonde shade with unmistakable

together wine to celebrate the end of a truly magnificent and memorable life, sitting on the world’s most beautiful beach with my loved ones, the day before the world is destroyed by an asteroid. If this is the last thing to ever touch my lips, I would die in blissful ecstasy. Person most likely to drink this wine: Queen Elizabeth II and the British Prime Minister Theresa May will have a few cases of ‘The Eleanor’ delivered to Buckingham Palace to enjoy throughout the revelry of their girls’ weekend. Saturday morning will be spent at the polo club in Windsor, incognito and under parasols, admiring the buff young men (umm… horses) at a polo tournament before savouring some haute cuisine by Heston Blumenthal. The evening will include a night at the opera with seats in the Royal box at The Royal Opera House’s production of ‘Turandot’, followed by nightcaps at the palace. Sunday’s spa day recovery, aided by a few bottles of ‘The Eleanor’, is the last endeavour aimed at fortifying them with the necessary courage and strength to face Donald Trump’s arrival on Air Force One the next morning, as he begins his state visit to the UK. tiny golden flecks evident as the glass is swirled. A gorgeous bouquet of aromas is an enticing opening act - ripe pear, butterscotch and flinty notes accentuated by a gorgeous white floral perfume. The headliner’s performance launches with an exquisite feathery light mouthfeel, medium-bodied and tingly on the tongue. Delicate fruit flavours of tart peach, ripe pear and vanilla are intricately wrapped around the wood’s contribution of crème brûlée, toasted almonds and caramel. All of this is finely poised atop a fresh mineral tang and zingy lime curtain call. The ending lingers seductively on the tongue and subsequent sips continue to unravel new flavour layers to revel in. The wine’s acidity cut through the rich seafood and creamy sauce, highlighting the briny ocean taste of the fish while ably supporting the richness of the dish on the mid palate. That tangy finish is a wonderful palate cleanser - setting you up impeccably for the next mouthful. A stellar showpiece – ‘The Eleanor’ is well worthy of repeat performances, if you manage to get your hands on more than one bottle. Where/When/How Would I drink this: This is the perfect
Empty Bottle Rating: Once you open this bottle there is zero possibility that any leftovers will be making it to your fridge for tomorrow. This bottle of wine is best opened when you have nowhere to be in a hurry. Grand for Your Rand: Available directly from the cellar or from specialist wine retailers at R325.00 per bottle - this is a wine suited to the serious wine collector or Chardonnay aficionado. Buy a bottle and lay it down in your cellar for a few years. You won’t regret it. For more information visit http:// www.hartenbergestate.com.

AIR MAURITIUS HAILS IN A GOLDEN AGE OF AVIATION
A
ir Mauritius celebrated its 50 year anniversary on the 14th June. The national carrier’s golden anniversary is testament to the credibility of the airline’s longevity, staying power and ultimate success, amid turbulent aviation times suffered by many competitors that have taken off, and fallen off the radar.
Over the past century, the enterprise has grown to become a leading company of Mauritius and a driving force of the Mauritian economy. It has fulfilled its mission as the national airline of Mauritius, while entrenching itself as a stable and strategic pillar of the Mauritian tourism industry. Established in June 1967, its first flight took to the skies on September 13, 1972, with a Piper Navajo to Rodrigues. Today, Air Mauritius flies to 27 destinations across the European, African and Australasian continents. Says Carla da Silva, Air Mauritius Regional Manager, Southern Africa and Latin America, “I am very proud to say that Air Mauritius has invested and in turn, affected a highly positive growth strategy on the African continent. Today we fly to Johannesburg, Durban,
Travel Bizz Cape Town, Maputo, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi. South Africa has been enormously instrumental in generating incremental revenue, and establishing long-term working partnerships.” Under the directorship of Carla da Silva, Air Mauritius Travel Smart incentive programme was introduced in 2010. Aimed at enticing more South African visitors to the tropical paradise during the low, cool seasons, through value added benefits such as increased luggage allowances, free trips for children and discounts for honeymooners Over-and-above its 50 year commemorations, Air Mauritius is celebrating a year of growth and further investment. This year (2017), the airline takes delivery of two Airbus A350-900s, and will add two Airbus A330-900neo aircraft to its current order of six Airbus A350-900 aircraft, while upgrades to the cabin interiors of its existing fleet, commence. With the view to meet and surpass customer expectations, and ultimately, to consolidate its status as the leading regional airline of the Indian Ocean. The A350-900 will be flying to South Africa, with the first flight expected in November 2017.

Finding Fabulous
Walking the Camino Francais‌ 799km over the Pyrenees! TravelmagSA Editor Justine Engelbrecht spent a couple of hours with Cathy Pittich to hear first-hand about this spiritual adventure.
Finding Fabulous
Q. Tell me a little bit about yourself, and where your passion for adventure comes from? A. I remember as a child looking at all my grandmother’s photos of her travels and they excited me. I think that is where my passion for travel was birthed. In my early 20’s I travelled around Europe, for a year. on a Vespa scooter. This was my first experience out of South Africa, I was young and naïve, but while it was scary and challenging, it was also interesting, beautiful, rainy and wet, intriguing, freeing and fun, and a wonderful introduction to the adventure of travel. Q. I believe you recently returned from the trip of a lifetime – can you tell us where you went and why you decided to go? A. I went to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago. In English it is the Way of St James, an ancient pilgrimage (walked by many for centuries) to where the remains of the apostle St James is buried, in the Cathedral of Santiago De Compostela. There are many paths that get you to Santiago, but I walked the most traditional one known as Camino Francias. It starts in the South of France in a little town called St Jean Pied-duPort and travels over the Pyrenees Mountains into Spain and continues westward along Northern Spain to Santiago, a total distance of 799Km. Why would anyone want to voluntarily walk such a distance, you ask? Well I guess some of us are just suckers for a challenge. Actually it started off as a celebration of life. Reaching one of those big number birthdays I wanted to celebrate life - My life. “A celebration of gratitude”. I wanted to do something BIG but still achievable, that I would never forget, something exciting, challenging and thrilling. A friend shared her inspiration to walk the Camino, and as I did some research and read up about it, I just got so excited and knew this was my “Big thing”.
Q. What did you need to do to prepare for this adventure? A. Preparations where twofold: Firstly I had to prepare my
body to be able to walk between 20-25km per day with a weighted backpack. And secondly packing my backpack with only essentials and getting the weight down to a minimum. The latter proved to be more challenging than the former. Training consisted of walking, walking and more walking, strength training and a sports massage every other week. Also packing and weighing, and repacking and reweighing, repeat, repeat until only the essentials remained in the backpack. Figuring out what is necessary and what isn’t necessary. Distinguishing between important and unimportant. Fear and insecurity are the main reasons for packing too much weight. I had to answer some tough questions - What is the worst thing
that can happen if I leave this item at home? What can I leave behind without losing functionality? Can I replace several items with one item - combine functions into one?
Q. Please share some of your passion and enthusiasm with us, and how you felt when you eventually arrived and took those first few steps? A. It is very surreal feeling. I had been talking and planning this trip for a number of years and now I was actually living it. It was very real and yet it also felt like I was walking in my own dream, my own subconscious mind. Of course it was very exciting to finally be doing it. Q. Can you give us some insight into the days & weeks that followed? A. To find your way along the right path you need to keep a keen eye out for the shell or yellow arrow. I decided to start off slowly, and ease myself into the longer distances, which proved to be a wise decision. I saw many others with horribly blistered feet, and sore and stiff legs. Physically and mentally I got into a simple rhythm with my basic daily needs being met. Walking longer distances I found my thoughts just wondering, and I came to viewing it as a Sabbatical. Five Weeks away, walking, reflecting, enjoying, recharging, and reinventing. Q. What towns did you visit? A. Some of the bigger towns
I visited on the way where Pamplona, where they do the running of the bulls, Burgos with its beautiful Gothic Cathedral, and Leon’s where the Cathedral has magnificent stain glass windows. Astorga is the place for chocolate, but I came to prefer the smaller towns, as I had more personal experiences, and it’s easier to find your hostel, some towns only have one.
Q. What experiences can you share? A. In my experience it was the very simple things that become
wonderful experiences. I found that all I had to do was walk and that somehow the universe conspired on my behalf to bring about wonderful experiences. - Having a most delicious gourmet meal in the most unexpected little town of Atapuerta, Comosopiens Restaurant. -I found myself in Astorga on Palm Sunday, where I stumbled upon a traditional Easter street procession that weaved it’s way through the town to the Cathedral. That was so special. -Expecting to stay at a hostel, which happened to still be closed for the winter and I had to walk on to the next town Pueta La Riena where I got a hotel room with all the luxuries for the same price as the hostel. That was a welcome treat. - Having a great meal and wonderful connection with a group of people in Ledigos when I felt lonely, and didn’t want to eat alone that night. -Having my backpack forwarded to the next town by a group
Finding Fabulous that had a vehicle transporting their bags, just at a time when my ankle was very sore and I was worried about walking with the weighted backpack that day. - Having dinner with three Danish ladies, who thought I was Danish too. They got me thinking and when I got back home I did some research into our family tree, and it turns out both my grandmothers descendants came from Copenhagen, Denmark.
Q. Please share with us some not to be missed sights and opportunities? A. -It is a great opportunity to meet other people from all over
the world. There is a kind of camaraderie among pilgrims and it’s easy to make friends. -Enjoy the moment. Whether it’s a great view, a sunny morning, great conversation, a tasty meal or getting another stamp in your pilgrim passport, just enjoy the moment. - Free wine tasting at Fuente de Iriche. For me it was 8.30 in the morning. -The cathedral in Leon has the most beautiful stained glass windows. They are afraid for the longevity of the Cathedral because it is more glass than stone and it is deteriorating. -Bring your pebble along to leave at Cruz de Ferro. -Have a vegetarian meal at El Refugio in La Faba. Fresh wholesome food. -Eat Pulpa (octopus) in Melide at Pulperia Ezequiel It is so delicious. -Drink “Zumo naturale” freshly squeezed orange juice every morning. -Swinging of the Botafumeiro in the Santiago Cathedral.
Q. This trip I believe is popular with Europeans would you
recommend this trip to fellow South Africans?
A. Oh absolutely. It is not a strenuous walk, so men or women
14
TravelMagSA - Finding Fabulous | Issue 35
of all ages would be able to cope. It is possible to walk only part of the Camino, if one has physical limitations or time constraints. Only the last 100km needs to be walked to receive the certificate. Safety is not an issue for those travelling alone,
Q. What advice and travel tips can you offer? A. Number one: Get the weight of your Backpack a low as
possible. The rule is it shouldn’t exceed 10% of your body weight! Easier said than done, but the lighter your pack the more you’ll enjoy your walk. 2.Do some training 3. Of course you need good hiking boots or walking shoes. 4. Don’t be afraid to go alone. You may just discover you enjoy your own company. But you do get to meet lots of interesting people along the way, 5. I would recommend spring or autumn; I think the heat of summer would be very unpleasant to walk in.
Q. Describe your experience in one sentence. A. An EPIC journey (Meaning of Epic: An
event that happened over a long period and involved lots of action and difficulty, based in historical setting.)

GOT A TASTE FOR SOUL FOOD? -HEAD TO THE DEEP SOUTH
A
MUNCH
merica’s Deep South is a fascinating place to discover. We can wax lyrical about the history, the music and the culture but it’s the food that will leave you with lingering memories.
Think crawfish pie, black-eyed peas, chicken fried steaks, gumbo and the best barbecue south of the Mason-Dixon Line complete with red-eye sauce and you get the drift. The food of the Deep South has been influenced in typical immigrant style with English, French, Scottish and Irish roots; and of course the Native Americans have placed their stamp on the taste profile as well. But perhaps one of the biggest influences of taste comes from one of America’s darkest parts of history – the slave trade. While the food of the Deep South might have not so savoury roots, the resulting ‘Soul Food’ has much more positive and lingering effects! So if you’ve ever dreamt of nibbling, snacking and ‘Munching’ your way across America’s Deep South then you’ve come to the right place. You’ll need to pack some supersize pants as you’ll be visiting some of America’s best loved spots while you take a mouthwatering journey through the likes of Austin, Nashville and New Orleans. Munch is a food safari unlike any other. Food truck experiences, Texas BBQ, soul food, whiskey tasting and cooking school delights will fill your day, whilst nights will be spent snoozing in comfy hotels.

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP
O
in Johannesburg from 5 to 30 July 2017 & Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town from 2 to 19 August. Starring Jonathan Roxmouth & Weslee Swain Lauder Presented by VR Theatrical at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre in Johannesburg.
n a remote manor called Mandacrest, something is amiss. Between the horrors of a marauding beast terrorizing the estate and the looming presence of the recently deceased former mistress Irma Vep, matters become awkward in the extreme for Lord Edgar and his new wife, Lady Enid. In this side-splitting comedy, you’ll be taken from the moors of England to the tombs of Egypt and back again, encountering along the way a host of vampires, werewolves, mummies and all manner of things that go bump in the night. The Mystery of Irma Vep is a satire of several theatrical, literary and film genres, including Victorian melodrama, farce, the penny dreadful, Wuthering Heights and the Alfred Hitchcock film, Rebecca. The cast of eight characters in this deliciously decadent ‘whodunnit?’ - lunatics, beasts, ghouls and gentlefolk - are played by only two actors who swop character and costumes faster than you can say ‘vampire!’. The intricate wardrobe design is by Pierre du Plessis, scenic design is by Nadine and Louis Minnaar and lighting design is by Oliver Hauser. http://bit.ly/IrmaVepComputicket http://bit.ly/FBIrmaVepSA
