Maui’s return

Lush Iao Valley, Maui

It’s almost sunset, the orange glow intensifying over the blue waters of the Pacific, but nobody is hurrying to get to dinner. A family tosses a football, lazily, on a patch of green, just enjoying the sultry early evening air and being together. Children run down the beachfront boardwalk in a hurry to get to nowhere in particular. The last die-hard swimmers reluctantly surface and make their way to neglected loungers, towelling off after a placid day in the pool. And as that big, flaming orb begins its descent toward the horizon, little groups form on the sand, phones out, photos snapped. A buzz rises. Here on the coast of Kaanapali, it’s abundantly clear: after a difficult two years, Maui is back in business. Like everywhere in the world, Hawaii’s Valley Isle has had some hard times in the last couple years. Hotels closed, restaurants deserted, tour companies left without customers. For months, lockdowns and stay-at-home orders kept tourists away, famously busy beaches almost empty. But as we all know, the world is reopening. The last of Hawaii’s COVID-19 travel restrictions ended on March 25, of this year. And as barriers come down, visitors have flooded back from the rest of the United States and around the world.

Maui is busy, in all the best ways. Hotels have welcomed a return of

guests, everyone happy to head back to paradise. But these properties haven’t been idle, rather using the quiet times to invest heavily in the future, pouring funds and energy into renovation and renewal. Hundreds of millions of dollars, in total. In a destination I’ve visited many times, during a recent week in Maui, the differences were immediately recognizable.

The Sheraton was the first hotel in the Kaanapali resort area, on the western side of Maui, when it opened in 1963. A-list celebrities looking for an alternative to the lights of Waikiki flooded in to stay along this glorious stretch of beach, the hotel built right up to the “Black Rock,” Pu’u Keka’a, where generations of brave cliff divers leapt hundreds of feet into the sea. Here, rooms have been renovated and the reception area completely reimagined, with comfortable seats overlooking the sprawling green and blue of the resort property, the perfect place to enjoy a morning coffee. They also added The Sandbar, the reception area’s only lobby bar, which offers “pupus with a view,” small bites and craft cocktails.

The Royal Lahaina Resort, another historic property, was closed for a full seven months. During that time, a long-time employee named Ford Ushijima tells me it was all hands on deck – waiters worked as gardeners, everyone pitched in to help fix up and maintain the property, refinishing furniture and working on other tasks. And management took the opportunity to refresh guestrooms, add a new ceiling and fresh paint to the lobby, repave pathways, retile the pools. Perhaps most significantly, they overhauled the restaurant, set on the main pool, to showcase some of its best assets – the beach and the ocean.

And at the Westin Maui, long a favourite resort, a recent renovation completely transformed an entire tower. They gave it – and all structures and spaces throughout

FEATURE SUMMER EDITION 2022 17
After months of lockdowns and the absence of tourists, the sun-soaked island is back with refreshed hotels, more authentic experiences and an even deeper connection to the land

the hotel – a new Hawaiian name, Hokupa’a, which means North Star, a light the Hawaiians used for centuries of traditional navigation. The resort gave a whole new look and feel to rooms, imbuing them a chic, beach club vibe.

And perhaps the most noteworthy change: the resort created an entirely unique space known simply as The Lanai. Accessed by a nondescript door on the second floor, the space feels a little like a speakeasy, but it’s accessible to all guests staying in Hokupa’a. Just hold your key-card wristband out to a digitized panel and the door swings open.

Inside, you’ll find many benefits familiar from executive lounges around the world, including complimentary breakfast and late afternoon bites. But this is something else entirely. As I arrive at happy hour, the space, open on two sides, is filled with guests chatting and laughing and enjoying the end of another day in paradise, over a cocktail. People sit at the bar, or on a balcony overlooking the ocean, with the most prized seats in the “cocktail pools,” actual sandy-bottom pools with chairs in the middle, the perfect place to enjoy golden hour with views over the beach and out to the island of Lanai.

A sense of anticipation reigns, and soon I see why. The Lanai is also the venue for a number of traditional Hawaiian activities, including “talk story” sessions, coconut weaving and ukulele lessons. Today, it’s the nightly blowing of the pu, the “chase the sunset ceremony,” a warrior wading into the pool, thigh deep, and blowing a conch. I take some photos, then settle in at the bar for a smoked old fashioned,

smoked in a box right in front of me, with mesquite chips.

While many left Maui during the pandemic, returning to their mainland hometowns, those who stayed tell the same story. Hawaii implemented a number of lockdown rules and stay-athome orders, for months mandating a two-week quarantine for anyone arriving on these islands. At the beginning of the pandemic, the tourism authority even asked media to refrain from publishing stories encouraging people to visit, and arrivals dropped by almost 100% at one point.

For this one brief moment in time, the residents of Maui had this island all to themselves. People tell me stories of going for a half-hour walk through normally crowded, touristy areas, but passing only a couple others. Of course, it was a difficult time economically, but many people speak of this time in a kind of reverie, like having a private paradise. “You would go to the beach and you’d be the only one there,” says Mark Ellman, a well-known chef and owner of Frida’s, a restaurant right on the water in the

FEATURE
Westin Maui Hokupaa Credit: Royal Lahaina Resort

charming West Maui town of Lahaina. “It was strange and, honestly, great.”

One of the most notable changes since the pandemic has been the return of wildlife, especially marine life, which thrived with fewer boats, swimmers and paddlers around them. At Whaler’s Village, a stylish shopping centre, the Hawai’i Wildlife Discovery Center opened in October of last year. In a space once dedicated to the history of whaling, visitors walk through a door surrounded by a giant mural depicting a flourishing sea, both above the water and below, entering under the inscription, “E Ola Ke Kai, E Ola Kakou – As the Ocean Thrives, So Do We.”

It’s a perfect first stop for visitors, giving tips for safe wildlife viewing, background on some of the key marine creatures you’ll encounter, and a pledge you can take to conduct yourself in a pono (righteous) way, respecting Maui’s people, culture and environment. “Our goal is that people leave with increased respect for the animals, for the land. That they leave feeling more alive,” says Maria Cristina Ramasco, an Italian marine biologist who volunteers here.

And I see it for myself on a catamaran cruise. Right at the end of whale season, I’m awed to spot big humpbacks breaching, leaping right out of the water and crashing back on their sides. Ancient-looking green sea turtles paddle right by the side of the boat, including one that’s probably 75 years old. It’s all just another day at the office for Chris Newman, a guide and deckhand with Teralani Sailing Adventures. He says visitors often have an almost-mystical

connection when they come out here on the sea. “They say they feel almost tingly, a spiritual energy,” he tells me. “You just feel the peace of this place.”

After a day on the water, it doesn’t feel like this could get much better. But I end on a tasty note – with a little chocolate. It’s a perfect example of a business that was stamped out by the pandemic, but then came back stronger. Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate was a long time in the making, opened just before the first lockdown, and then had to shutter two days later.

Winding through arid hills on the flanks of the West Maui Mountains in a little minibus, taking their farm tour, I learn that all previous attempts to make this sweet treat on the island had been small, backyard operations, and this is the first farm-to-factory operation here. These fields once held sugar cane, says guide Dakota Achin. Now, the owner, Gunnars Valkirs of the company, a biophysicist who invented the first visual pregnancy test, has planted a forest. He donates all the profits from the operation back to the community.

We descend from the bus and enter the forest through a small door, like discovering a secret garden. The farm includes about 6,500 trees spread over 20 acres. “Every cacao pod needs to be harvested by hand,” explains Achin, showing us what’s inside. I try the seeds, right out of the pod, ooey and gooey in a soft white pulp, but not entirely unpleasant to eat.

Our small group climbs up into a sort of tree house, settling at tables to taste the finished product, those seeds dried and roasted and converted into a delicious final product. We make our way through nine types: dark chocolate, dark milk, as well as varieties infused with guava and mango. A warm breeze blowing, a view out over the treetops, all the way to the blue ocean, Lanai and Molokai just beyond, it feels like a perfect Maui moment. The fruit of the land before me, the best of it, all around, and a sustainable business just started with nothing but the future ahead – Maui is back, and better than ever.

SANDALS RESORTS CONTINUES TO ‘RAISE THE BAR’

New craft cocktails and bars are a recipe for success

As part of the award-winning, 5-star Luxury Included experience, Sandals Resorts features up to 11 bars per resort, only serving premium liquors at every single one, whether it’s on land, in the pool, over the water or high in the sky.

Since Sandals invented the signature Swim-Up Pool Bar at Sandals Montego Bay back in 1984, something that’s now commonplace at every all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, it’s no surprise that the company is raising the bar yet again with stunning new bars paired with carefully curated craft

cocktails for guests to enjoy day and night.

Over at Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau, which is fresh off of a US$55 million renovation, the new Mr. B’s Bar pays tribute to Sandals Resorts’ beloved late Chairman and Founder, Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart. A coveted spot for beforeand after-dinner drinks, its modern atmosphere gives a nautical nod to Stewart’s love of the sea, with his iconic blue and white striped shirts serving as the aesthetic inspiration. Black and white photography of Stewart throughout his illustrious career are complemented by the soothing sounds of a grand piano. As for what’s on the menu, a selection of brand new signature cocktails includes the almost-too-pretty

to drink Guava Bubbles, the colourful Passionate Mule, and the classic Mr. B’s Old Fashioned, infused with local coffee bitters.

Also at the resort is The Bar at Coconut Grove, a guest favourite featuring ocean views and fun swing-style seating. A menu of signature cocktails on tap is crafted with premium spirits and fresh juices, including the ever-refreshing Strawberry Guava Frosé, the Dragon in the Coconut with its different hues and blend of rums, and the Mango Mai Tai, topped with a dark rum float. Cocktail sipping here is best enjoyed while grooving to the sounds of Coconut Grove, Sandals Royal Bahamian’s lush beachfront lounge, which offers plush couch-style seating, entertainment and music throughout the day and well into the night.

How are Caribbean bookings doing?

All of our Caribbean properties are currently open. We’re seeing a major return of travel and expecting this to continue to be one of the biggest summers in several years. Travellers are eager to return to the Caribbean and love the region for its proximity, tourist infrastructure and diversity and quality of experiences.

How important is the Canadian market?

The Canadian market is highly important considering the country has some of the strictest travel restrictions. Changes in their travel landscape reflect changes in travel worldwide. As summer approaches, we are seeing higher traction from Canada and more Canadians ready to visit our sunny destinations.

What are some new Caribbean offerings?

At TRS Coral Hotel located on the beaches of Costa Mujeres in the Mexican

Caribbean, guests can book the ‘Love Is Blind’ all-inclusive package to live the same experiences that couples shared on the hit show of the same name. The package includes Junior Suite Swim Up accommodations, a welcome gift, butler service, a hydromassage bath, five-course romantic dinner, two tickets to CHIC Cabaret and more. Also, in Montego Bay, Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa is undergoing a multi-milliondollar refurbishment that will bring a new look and feel to the property, including new room categories.

What new agent resources are available in 2022?

Now more than ever it is important to work with a trusted travel advisor to save time, money and stress, and to help navigate any unexpected hiccups throughout the trip. We launched ‘Booking Pro by Palladium Connect’ as a way to give back and keep supporting the travel industry while simplifying the booking process for our partners.

PILAR ARIZMENDI-STEWART

VP of Sales and Marketing for the Americas, Palladium Hotel Group pro.palladiumhotelgroup.com/en

Today’s travellers want personalized experiences that cater to their travel styles and needs. Entertainment is one of the pillars of Palladium Hotel Group – we offer daily activity calendars that range from beach yoga, sunset cocktails by the beach, and salsa, merengue and Spanish classes, to name a few. As trends like bleisure and multigenerational groups continue to grow in popularity, we want to continue offering exciting activities for every type of traveller.
