HANDS UP WHO REMEMBERS THE JOY OF REALISING THAT THE STABILISERS WERE OFF, YOUR DAD WASN’T HOLDING ONTO THE SADDLE ANY MORE, AND YOU WERE FINALLY RIDING YOUR BIKE? If you were lucky enough to have a childhood that included a bike, you’ll probably remember the sense of freedom and promise that brought with it, and how the world suddenly expanded far beyond that reachable on foot. Cycling has waxed and waned in popularity over the years, and is currently experiencing something of a renaissance, not least due to the debut of Team Sky in 2010, GB Cycling’s first top tier team. Add to that the haul of 22 gold medals in cycling from the last three Olympics, Bradley Wiggins and then Chris Froome winning the Tour de France, as well as cyclists gaining the coveted British Sports

CYCLING

EVENTS

Kirkhill Cross Country Race 16 June, Pitfichie Enduro 28 July

THE NORTH-EAST HAS A WEALTH OF GREAT PLACES FOR A BIKE RIDE, FROM OLD RAILWAY TRACKS TO FOREST TRAILS AND DEDICATED BIKE CIRCUITS.

Personality of the Year four times in the last 10 years. Amanda Tweedie of Aspire Performance Coaching cycled as a child, but after giving up running due to dodgy knees, took up cycling as an adult again, and has never looked back. She now offers one to one training and group sessions for beginners to serious competitors from her base in Inverurie. ‘Cycling can be anything from a relaxing, meditative birl through the local countryside to a full-on adrenaline experience. It’s non-weight bearing but provides a cardio workout, so it’s great for your heart, lungs and joints’. If dodging the traffic isn’t your thing, then make sure your bike has knobbly tyres and head for somewhere off road. The North-east has a wealth of great places for a bike ride, from old railway tracks (Deeside Way, Buchan and Formartine Way) to forest trails and dedicated bike circuits (Tarland Trails, Pitfichie Forest, Kirkhill

Forest). And if you feel that you’re going to need a bit of assistance then look at letting an electric bike take the strain. Basic bikes start at around £200, and although there is a huge variety of specialised cyclewear and tech to get carried away with, you just need two wheels and a cycle helmet to recreate that childhood feeling of freedom and being at one with the great outdoors.

IF SPIN’S YOUR THING Spin classes are a good alternative if you are a bit wobbly on a real bike, or if you want to do some indoor training. Group classes can provide extra motivation and instruction.

BANCHORY IS THE LARGEST MARKET IN ABERDEENSHIRE, REGULARLY ATTRACTING 25 STALLS

WHY DO WE LIKE A FARMERS’ MARKET SO MUCH? MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE IT HARKS BACK TO AN OLD WAY OF SHOPPING, POPPING IN AND OUT OF STALLS FOR A HANDFUL OF CARROTS HERE, A PACK OF BACON THERE, MEETING FRIENDS AND CHATTING TO THE STALLHOLDERS. OR MAYBE IT’S THE FEELING THAT THESE ARE SMALL LOCAL PRODUCERS AND BY BUYING FROM THEM, WE’RE CLOCKING UP ZERO FOOD MILES AND CONTRIBUTING TO OUR LOCAL ECONOMY. WHATEVER THE REASON, IT’S A FOOD TREND THAT IS NOW FIRMLY ESTABLISHED ONCE AGAIN IN THE REGION’S CALENDAR. BE YOU MAGAZINE

FARMERS’ MARKETS

Every weekend of the month sees produce markets on across Aberdeen city and shire, from the Greater George Street Traders Association market to pop-ups such as Inspired Nights on the Green, and wellknown favourites like Banchory, Huntly and Stonehaven Farmers’ Markets.

It’s a food trend that is now firmly established once again in the region’s calendar.

Banchory is the largest market in Aberdeenshire, regularly attracting 25 stalls including regulars Devenick Dairy, Granite City Fish and Wark Farm, as well as newcomers Morningdog Coffee and Cove Honey. David Ritchie is the marketing manager and is very proud of what the monthly event offers. ‘We have a saying which is – Buy Local, Eat Local, Meet Local, and that sums up what we do here. It’s not so much buying food as being able to smell and taste things, and chat to the people who made the pies, raised the animals, and brewed the beer. We like to make sure that people can get their entire Saturday dinner here, from meat, game and fish to vegetables, eggs, bread and cheese.’

than always making a knee-jerk soup. We’ve all got rather out of touch with what grows when, unless we are farmers or have our own allotment, and there is a kind of joy about knowing that it’s asparagus season, or that the first local strawberries are just around the corner.

One of the best things about getting a veg box is experimenting, and some suppliers will include seasonal recipes in a newsletter with the box or on their website. There are veg box schemes in the city, from the RGU Organic Veg Bag Collective which is run solely for RGU students, to CFine community food initiative in Poynernook Road and Peterhead where you can donate to their food bank at the same time as picking up your box. Bridgefoot Organic Co-op delivers throughout the city weekly, and Foodstory on Thistle Street also offer an organic box collection service on Thursdays.

fabulous fish Seared Shetland scallops with hazelnut vinaigrette, pickled apples and pea shoots An impressive but simple fresh summer starter By Craig Somers at The Silver Darling.

SERVES 4 PEOPLE INGREDIENTS 16 medium scallops 50g pea shoots(washed) 1 Granny Smith apple 1 lemon(juiced) 85g roasted hazelnuts 60g olive oil 10g sherry vinegar

Can’t find peashoots? Why not grow your own! 16

1 First slice the apple discarding the core and chop into strips, mix with half of the lemon juice and leave to pickle for at least an hour. 2 Blitz the hazelnuts in a food processor until finely chopped but not too powdery or chop by hand. 3 Mix with the oil, the other half of the lemon juice and the vinegar and season. 4 When ready to cook place a large non stick frying pan on a medium to high heat for a couple of minutes, mix the

scallops with some vegetable oil and season well. 5 Place scallops flat side down into the pan and sear until lightly caramelised(about 1 and a half to 2 minutes) turn over the scallops and lower the heat slightly and cook for the same length of time on the other side. 6 Remove from the pan onto a piece of decent kitchen roll or a cloth to absorb the oil. 7 Add four scallops to each plate and top with the apples, pea shoots and vinaigrette.

Monkfish with vegetable and chick pea bhuna A fresh take on a traditional curry dish, replacing meat with succulent monkfish. By Craig Wilson at Eat on the Green.

SERVES 2 PEOPLE INGREDIENTS 300g monkfish 2 red chillies, deseeded and diced 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 cardamom pods, crushed 25g fresh ginger, peeled and sliced Small bunch coriander, roughly chopped 1 red onion, roughly chopped 1 courgette, diced 1 chopped tomato 50g spinach 200g tinned chickpeas 1tbsp ground coriander 1tbsp hot curry powder 1tbsp cumin 1tsp turmeric 1tsp hot chilli powder ½ pint vegetable stock

Sea salt, Ola oil, natural yoghurt, fresh mint, chopped 1 Preheat the oven to 180ËšC 2 Pre-heat a lightly oiled char-grill pan and place strips of fish into it. Then place strips in the oven for 5 mins, wrap in foil to rest before serving. 3 Heat some more oil in a frying pan until piping hot. Place the red onion, chillies, ginger, cardamom pods and garlic into the pan and cook for a few minutes until softened. Then stir all the remaining ingredients into the pan and add the stock. Cover and slowly simmer until most of the stock has evaporated. This should take roughly 10 minutes. 4 Mix the fresh mint into the yoghurt and set aside. 5 Put the vegetable bhuna into the centre of a large hot dish and gently place monkfish on top. Finish by pouring over some of the minted yoghurt and sprinkle with a few coriander leaves. BE YOU MAGAZINE

BIGGEST EVER ABERDEEN YOUTH GAMES

w

Over 1,500 pupils from 45 city primary schools converged on Aberdeen Sports Village on Friday 24 May, as the annual Aberdeen Youth Games programme concluded with its Primary Festival of Sport. The pupils were cheered on by a number of inspirational ambassadors to the programme, including Sir Ian Wood KT GBE, taekwondo world champion Katrina Carr, table tennis champion Colin Dalgleish, snowboarder Douglas Green and Scottish basketball’s Chris Clearly.

ALL IT TAKES IS THE TINKLY OFF-KEY TUNE OF A FAR OFF ICE CREAM VAN TO TRANSPORT US BACK TO THE ENDLESS SUNNY DAYS OF OUR CHILDHOOD STREETS, MEMORIES OF RUSHING OUT TO BUY A SLIDER OR A 99 AND RETURNING HOME STICKY AND HAPPY. Ice cream is in our DNA, through us like a stick of seaside rock, the ultimate feel good food. The North-east has long been host to ice cream entrepreneurs: Giulianotti’s in Stonehaven have been making the sweet treat since 1899, and Rizza’s of Huntly have had a shop selling ice cream there since 1928. Simpson’s of Buckie started in 1999, while Aberdeen ice-cream dynasty Mackie’s of Scotland are into their fourth generation. There are some new kids on the block too, like Andy Forrest of Fit’s the Scoop in Peterculter, who opened the family business a year ago after a search for a new life direction.

Flavours have changed a bit over the years and become more experimental, although old favourites like rum and raisin, raspberry ripple and good old vanilla, strawberry and chocolate have never really gone away. A quick look turns up Eton Mess, bacon and egg, and whisky and raspberry, alongside beetroot and gin and tonic sorbets. Freak shakes are a thing, and Coke floats are back. And today you can get dairy-free tubs, gluten-free cones and reduced sugar options so no-one needs to miss out on one of life’s very special indulgences.

DECLUTTERING

‘Have nothing in your life that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.’ WILLIAM MORRIS

DECLUTTERING IS NOW A HOUSEHOLD WORD, AND MOST OF US ARE NOW AWARE OF THE CONNECTION BETWEEN PILES OF STUFF AND UNTIDY HOUSES OR WORKPLACES, AND THE VERY REAL TIDE OF ANXIETY AND STRESS THAT PLAGUES OUR MODERN WORLD.

I

f you’re wondering where to start, and you don’t necessarily want to pile all your clothes on the bed, why not start small with a drawer and work up from there? Folding clothes so that you can see them all makes sense, and you’ll soon notice those you never wear. Putting our winter

22

BE YOU MAGAZINE

wardrobe away for the summer isn’t entirely possible in a country where it snows in May, however there are probably big coats, ski gear, woolly hats and scarves that you could pop into a large vacuum bag and stick in the loft, giving you space to tidy up.

MINDFULNESS

Kitchens are black holes for things like plastic boxes and lids, out of date spices and use-once gadgets. Find a tray that fits in your cupboard and takes all your spices at once, that way you can just lift the tray out and see everything you’ve got. If you’ve got a yoghurt-maker or a train cake mould that you will never use again, why not stick them on Gumtree or your local Buy, Swap, Sell site, you might even make a bit of cash. As for those plastic boxes, get a child to match up as many lids and boxes as they can, and put the rest in the recycling. Of course, we’re all keen to help save the planet by reducing waste, so be mindful of how you move your clutter on. Charity shops are a good option, but remember dress agencies for designer clothes if you could do with some money, or how about planning a swishing party? Everyone brings three barely worn items or accessories, and people try on and take home anything they fancy.

Some cosmetics companies will take packaging back, wildlife rescue shelters are looking for old mascara wands, and there is a UK charity called smallsforall.org that take second hand bras. If you’re not sure where to recycle your pre-loved items locally, go to recyclenow.com to find the nearest place as well as information on recycling symbols.

Toiletries and makeup are likely suspects for clutter culprits, especially when you factor in free samples, travel minis, hotel freebies, and unwanted gifts. These things do actually go out of date, so a good rule of thumb guide from Good Housekeeping is:

EVERY SEASON mascara and liquid liner

EVERY SIX MONTHS skin care, sunscreens, liquid foundation

EVERY YEAR hair products except hairspray

EVERY TWO YEARS powder-based cosmetics, lipsticks and nail polishes.

THE CENTRE WAS BUILT IN 1996 ON LAND THAT WAS EARMARKED TO BE USED BY THE COMMUNITY, ON WHAT WAS THEN THE EDGE OF INVERURIE. NOW 23 YEARS LATER THE CENTRE IS BURSTING AT THE SEAMS AT THE CENTRE OF THE BUSY TOWN, WITH 7,500 VISITORS THROUGH THE DOOR EVERY WEEK. Kevin Bonarius is now the Chief Operating Officer at Garioch Sports Centre, but 13 years ago he walked through the doors as a teenage football coach, and that commitment to employing and developing local people of all ages is very much the ethos of the building and the brand. 24

PLAY, RUN, JUMP OR MEDITATE.

There’s a crèche every weekday morning, and a suite of classes from Bodypump and Metafit to Yoga and Power pramming. Using their bespoke app, you can see who is taking the class, when it is and pay then and there. With a dance studio, full size games hall, fitness suite, squash courts, community hall and conference room, you’d think that would be enough to manage. Kevin has other ideas.

‘We are surrounded by five football pitches including a FIFA standard 3G floodlit pitch. Most of the studios open onto the

surrounding grass, so classes can spill out if the weather is suitable. There’s also a 150m running track, and we are well underway with plans to open a three-court tennis facility and extended childcare, as this is where we are seeing demand.’ Garioch Sports Centre is largely selffunding, with the RunGarioch event bringing in a large chunk of the operating capital needed for the centre. The community vibe runs through the place like a stick of rock, with many of the 65 staff once being children at the centre themselves. And although they offer very reasonable membership deals, you can still just pay and play, run, jump or meditate. What is

CBD Oil? CBD oil is extracted from the flowers, seeds and stalks of the hemp plant, the same one that has been used for decades for clothing, animal bedding and soap. Its Sunday name is Cannabidiol oil and, unlike its better-known relation THC, it has no psychoactive effects. What it does appear to have is a beneficial effect on health, hence the reason we are now seeing it promoted everywhere, from chemists to health food shops. Usually taken by mouth with a few drops under the tongue, CBD Oil now appears in a range of over the counter or online products, from moisturisers to menu items and even in spirits. Doctors have been able to prescribe it from November last year, but this is all a far cry from Rebecca Napier’s experience. Rebecca’s path to adulthood was a long and painful one, dogged from the age of five with Crohn’s disease. She was no stranger to her local hospital, becoming used to high levels of pain and the anxiety that chronic illness often brings. At 21 she underwent her first big operation, to remove most of her bowel. By 26 she was being admitted four times a week for bowel obstructions, whilst trying to hold down a job as a kitchen designer. After one operation, she contracted sepsis and almost died, LAUNCHED IN 2018 after which she had a stoma fitted THE WEE HEMP and struggled to deal with PTSD COMPANY symptoms. Then in 2016, she was IS RIGHT AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE diagnosed with fibromyalgia and her CBD EXPLOSION body reacted severely to the medication 32

she was offered, forcing Rebecca and her husband Calum to search for an urgent alternative solution. Their search led them to try CBD oil, which at that point was not for sale in the UK. Rebecca also radically changed her diet to include only organic wholefoods, and retrained in various alternative and complementary therapies, including reiki, facial reflexology and shamanic healing. She is now well and leading a largely pain-free life, and the life change also prompted a new business. Launched in 2018, the couple’s CBD oil business The Wee Hemp Co. is right at the forefront of the current explosion of CBD oil awareness, and the Napiers are also delighted to have won several awards including Elevator’s Spirit of Enterprise.

Q

I have developed pain in my groin and hip at tennis. Do I have a groin strain?

‘Often pain in this area can be from overstraining or overstretching the adductor muscle tendon but it can also be as a result of pinching or overstretching the soft tissues around the hip joint. Hip joint pain may be accompanied by buttock, pelvic, lower back or thigh pain and is most commonly associated with sports involving flexion and rotation such as football, hockey and tennis. Groin strain pain is more usually associated with acceleration/ deceleration and stretching. Your physiotherapist will distinguish which you have and offer localised treatment and a program of exercises to address weakness, muscle length, and range of motion appropriate to the severity, irritability and nature of your problem.’

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

WORDS BY KIRSTY MCLEAN

IT DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER YOU HAVE AN ALLOTMENT, A BIG GARDEN OR A TINY BALCONY SPACE, THE MESSAGE IS THAT IT IS GOOD FOR YOU. WHY?

Exercise : An hour of gardening 3-5 times a week helps to keep you fit and can be an effective form of exercise if you put your back into it. Lift your mood : Exercise helps to release endorphins, the hormone that helps to make people feel satisfied and relaxed. Healthy Bones & Immune System : Being in sunlight can help to improve mood and the absorption of vitamin D can help your body absorb calcium, which in turn helps to keep your bones strong and your immune system healthy. Meeting People : This simple pastime can provide us with a social interaction that brings common purpose and aim, making us feel a part of something and that feels good! Balance your mood : It can be a mood leveller too. Frustration and anger can be directed into digging or other more physical tasks that can help to disperse more negative feelings. Sensory : It can fill the senses. Stop and look around you, take in what you see ‌the colours, the shapes, the scents

and textures. Be mindful, notice every detail, it can be soothing and calming. Positive Outlook : Looking after your plants can bring about a great sense of achievement. When you see that first flower blooming or that first growth popping out of the ground, it can make you feel quite excited! Growing things can give you a great sense of purpose. Personal Contribution : Growing produce and sharing makes such a positive contribution to your community, whether that be you, your family, your friends or your neighbours. You also reduce carbon footprint, packaging, road congestion and it gives you a greater sense of independence.

That connection that we have with nature when we are gardening is primitive and grounds us to something much more powerful than ourselves. The reliability of the seasons is a stabilising influence and helps us to put our lives into perspective, so why not give it a go?

utdoor yoga is the perfect way to combine gentle exercise and time communing with nature.

On a warm day, arm yourself with a mat and a blanket and head for a sheltered spot, either by yourself or with whoever fancies joining in! Choose somewhere relatively free of distractions, like the wind or loud traffic noise, and make sure the ground is level and litter-free. If it’s a really great day, try practising on grass without the mat, your connection with the earth will be even greater. Tune into the natural

Simple yoga poses are best, stick to sequences you know, such as Sun Salutation and Downward Facing Dog and try and tap into the differences that being outdoors makes. You might even feel like trying a headstand! Finish up by putting on an extra layer or wrapping yourself in a blanket, then round the experience off with a meditation and breathing exercises.

You want them to have fun, you want them to be able to do their homework, and you want them to be able to join in with their peers, but so much of life for kids now is on the internet. FAMILY HEALTH

Under 16s are on their phones for an average of 3 hours a day.

Source: Childwise Monitor 2018

Using a child-friendly browser is a great way to let your child use the device, without the worry that something will be accidentally opened, or that inappropriate content is just a click away. Google has a child-friendly interface called Kiddle which has three levels of content, ranging upwards from sites containing only child-specific content, checked and edited by the people running the site, to a level where research might be needed for homework, giving access to well-known general sites, filtered by Google safe search. Pikluk can also lock the child out from using the rest of your device, and the ZAC browser was specifically designed for children with autism, removing certain functions like the right mouse click to help with lack of fine motor skills. There are also various children-focused email accounts such as Zillamail and KidsEmail, which include features such as a read out loud option and time limits, as well as parental controls such as a quarantine folder so that emails can be vetted before the child gets them, or the option of blind copies to the parent’s account.

You want to feel that you can trust them to make the right decisions and not be fooled by something fake or harmful.

Zift is a handy tool if you want to monitor your child’s phone usage, giving alerts when key words are used in searches, such as suicide, weapons or drugs, allowing you to monitor and set limits for each child’s screen time, and enabling you to pause the internet instantly. Of course, ultimately you need your children to understand and heed the risks that the internet presents as well as how useful and enjoyable it can be. You want to feel that you can trust them to make the right decisions and not be fooled by something fake or harmful, rather than constantly monitoring them. The best way to do this is to keep the channels of communication open, talking whenever possible about what they’re interested in, and maybe asking them to explain some of the things they’re doing, it’s always fun to feel like you know more than your parents!
