There’s no denying that the city and the shire have both changed dramatically over the last decade. We’ve seen new shopping centres and swathes of new housing, we’ve seen the oil price drop off and a bleak global outlook.

Even though we’re heading into autumn and winter, there’s a real sense of anticipation in the air. It feels like we’re ready to re-emerge as a region, more confident, more cosmopolitan and more optimistic than before. The covers will soon be off the refurbished Music Hall and the expanded Art Gallery. The last road cones will be cleared and the AWPR will improve transport links. We’re ready to take on the world once more.

avid Lloyd Aberdeen is challenging both members and non-members to take part in a special fundraising challenge this October. The Swim, Ride, Run Challenge is in aid of the British Heart Foundation, David Lloyd’s chosen charity. The Swim, Ride, Run Challenge is a triathlon that can be completed in stages over 31 days, rather than in one go.

It’s a great way to improve your fitness and help power the British Heart Foundation's life-saving heart research.

If you decide to take part, but you’re not a club member, you can register online and will be given a special temporary membership that

allows access to the facilities on Tuesdays and Thursdays at your first session.

Whether this is the first triathlon you’ve taken on or you’re a seasoned pro, you have 31 days to complete it whenever you want, in a way that’s a challenge for you. The challenge offers four different distance options, the shortest being the Sprint Triathlon which involves swimming 750 metres, cycling 20km and running 5km. You could also choose the Olympic Triathlon or Half Triathlon formats, or, if you’re keen, there’s the Full Triathlon, which is a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42.195km run.

You can take part on your own, with friends, co-workers or with your family - however you choose to complete it, you'll be raising money for an excellent cause. David Lloyd’s friendly, experienced staff are always happy to help and provide guidance about how to break your Swim Run Ride into achievable chunks and help with motivation.

The cycling studio, 25 metre pool and state of the art treadmills will all help you achieve your goal.

‘Having plastic surgery is a big step and worth thinking about carefully.

It is natural to feel a bit anxious.

You will want to know what can be achieved, what is involved and what the possible outcomes and risks are.’

As with all treatments at TAC, first you will need to be assessed. This is an opportunity to discuss what the goals for your appearance are.

Mr Lowrie says ‘it is a good idea to think about specific things you would like to improve, for example bumps, wrinkles or drooping, rather than just having a broad dislike of yourself. Any previous treatments or injuries to the area are important, as is your past medical history. All of this information will help work out what is best for your appearance, concerns and health.’

As with any procedure there is not a one size fits all solution. There may be one or more operations or treatments that could help. Each will have pros and cons and these need to be considered honestly.

Any surgery will have a recovery period, leave some scars and have some risk of side effects or complications. Good care will help to minimise these but they cannot be eliminated. The risks will have to be acceptable to you. It is also important to get a realistic picture of what your result might be. Whilst a good improvement in specific areas of concern is reasonable, ‘perfection’ is very difficult to achieve. Before and after photographs can be very helpful. There may also be specific information leaflets and websites that can help. A second consultation is usually a good idea before proceeding as it’s common to think of questions later on.

Overall, there is a lot to take in. To make the best decision you need advice from someone appropriately trained, sympathetic, honest and skilled and most importantly who you feel comfortable and confident with.

Some general advice is to look for a Consultant Surgeon with an interest in treating your area of concern. A Plastic Surgeon will have received training in all aspects of cosmetic work. MEET THE MALMAISON'S KITCHEN WIZARD

Warm poached salmon INGREDIENTS PER PERSON I was born and raised in Poland, but came to the UK over 15 years ago, when I decided to pursue a new challenge. I started at the bottom, learning the very basics in the kitchen, and worked my way up! I have a wonderful wife and son, and a new puppy called Luna.

Away from work, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing my guitar, and fishing. For adrenaline, there’s nothing better than a good day out paintballing!

Like many chefs, I learned my trade in a variety of different kitchens. At the Mal, I experience something new each day.

The very best thing, without a doubt, has to be the team. They are great to work with and even after a busy day they’re always lively and cheery.

Being a chef my ultimate passion is food. If I was limited to three foods for the rest of my life, I’d struggle. I would definitely choose scallops as I love the texture and flavour, pork belly because it melts in your mouth, and sticky toffee pudding... for obvious reasons.

If I could cook for anyone at all, it’d be Gordon Ramsey who is my role model and Flash Gordon as he is my super hero!

5 wedges of normal beetroot (about 80 g) 3 wedges of golden beetroot (about 50 g) 60g-70g flaked warm poached salmon 10g watercress leaves dressed with extra virgin olive oil 30ml each extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dress the beets Horseradish crème fraiche (makes 10 portions) 200 g crème fraiche 3 table spoons horseradish sauce METHOD Horseradish Crème Fraiche: Take 200g of crème fraiche, 3 tablespoon of horseradish (adjust to taste), 1 tablespoon of white wine vinegar and a dash of lemon juice and season to taste.

Mix by hand or with a blender and set aside until required.

Move on to the beetroot. Place the purple beets on a large sheet of tinfoil adding thyme, garlic, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Do the same with the golden beets, but omit the balsamic vinegar. Wrap both beet parcels in the foil and cook in the oven at 160oC until soft. Allow to cool, then peel the skins.

Now marinade the purple beets with olive oil, sea salt and balsamic vinegar and the others in olive oil and sea salt. Arrange beets on a plate.

Poach the salmon gently in simmering water for around 11 minutes. Remove from the pan and place the salmon flakes on top of the beetroot wedges.

Pipe or spoon three piles of horseradish crème fraiche on the plate, dress with watercress and finish with a drizzle of balsamic and oil dressing. Enjoy!

is very much an acquired taste. In many respects, it’s seen as a complicated drink, with each malt’s flavour profile influenced by the land, the barrel, the barley and the water.

Just as I can never really detect overtones of melon and pineapple in a bottle of wine, I had never taken the time to understand and unravel the complexities of Scotland’s national spirit and, deep down, I thought of whisky as a drink for middle aged men.

That opinion changed after spending a couple of hours in the company of the Carmelite’s whisky ambassador, Ros Wardley-Smith and an impressive selection of bottles from the Glen Garioch distillery at Oldmeldrum.

Ros was keen to break down the barriers to enjoying and understanding whisky. This may be part of the reason for the Carmelite’s ever expanding collection, which includes rare and discontinued malts and why a series of tasting events are planned. We’re taught to nose the glass and how to taste each malt properly and the way smells invoke memories.

While many of those attending the session clearly knew a fair bit about whisky, the session was easy to follow, informative, unintimidating and well-paced for beginners too. Ros is always about on Friday and Saturday as part of her ambassador role, spending time with people explaining and sharing her passion about the hotel’s whisky collection and tasting events. Ros explained, ‘I believe there is a whisky for everyone, it’s just a matter of finding it! Everyone should have a wonderful experience at our tasting events.

There's a great atmosphere and it’s a unique opportunity to try 3-5 different whiskies paired with food’.

PLANNING AHEAD IS THE KEY TO GREAT FESTIVE FOOD…

Christmas cooking can be pretty stressful, especially if you have a big crowd and a small kitchen! My advice is to plan your menu in November, shop ahead and freeze in advance where you can.

On the day, reduce last minute hassle by pre-cooking your veg on Christmas morning.

Run them under cold water, then sauté for a few minutes just before serving. Heat your

soup and gravy in advance, then store them in vacuum flasks. It saves space on the hob and makes serving much easier!

It’s lovely to use traditional family recipes or to give each dish a special little twist. Try giving your turkey a cranberry glaze or add rosemary, honey and cinnamon for great roast carrots. Pour yourself a glass of fizz, relax and enjoy yourself!

Plant and grow bulbs, corms and tubers for winter and early spring colour.

If you want to extend the flowering season, planting bulbs, corms and tubers is a great way to achieve this.

Bulbs can be planted in containers, borders or even in the grass. There are bulbs, corms and tubers to suit all sites and soils.

Always plant bulbs with the pointed growing tip facing upwards. If it isn’t clear which is the top then try planting bulbs on their side.

Some tuberous plants such as begonias will be flatter than bulbs and don’t have an obvious growing point. Position them just below the compost surface with the indented side facing upwards.

What soil do bulbs prefer?

As a rule, most will need a well drained soil that won’t sit waterlogged in winter which may cause them to rot.

How deep should bulbs be planted?

Bulb planting depths vary depending on their size and species but the rule of thumb is that most bulbs can be planted approximately three times their own height.

Growing bulbs in containers: Planting bulbs in containers allows you to maximize on flower power and once they have performed, you can move the planters out of the way to let them die back. Use a good quality general purpose compost and mix in a handful of fine grit to improve drainage.

Alternatively you can choose specially prepared bulb compost. Make sure you water bulbs in containers regularly as they begin to grow, and continue throughout their flowering period. Once the foliage begins to die back

you can gradually reduce watering as they enter their dormant period.

Planting bulbs in the grass: Bulbs in grass can create a very natural look.

They are best grown in informal areas of grass that can be left unmown until the bulb foliage dies back. Lift the turf and plant your bulbs and then relay the turf. Try not to walk on the area where the bulbs are after planting so you don’t damage the tips of the bulbs.

When to plant: There are so many variations in the advice available as to exactly when to plant, what but if we follow the Royal Horticultural Society’s general advice then the following rules apply.

Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, preferably by the end of September.

Plant tulips in November.

Plant autumn/winter-flowering bulbs, such as nerine, cyclamen, snowdrop, winter aconite, ideally in Spring but at latest by late Summer.

Plant hardy summer-flowering bulbs, such as lilies, alliums and crocosmia, in September and October.

If however if you have a bag of bulbs in the shed that you have forgotten about, don’t throw them away. As long as they haven’t rotted, get them in the ground – you have nothing to lose!

When to cut back: In whatever medium you plant, containers, grass or border, don’t cut foliage back for six weeks after flowering

hen it comes to modern kitchens, sometimes traditional materials and craftsmanship are best. Lethenty Cabinetmakers have a reputation for creating outstanding bespoke kitchens and custom made furniture.

ust a two-hour bus ride from Boston, Portland’s charm lies in the seamless union between historic seaside village and bohemian metropolis. The challenge as a tourist is deciding where to begin. If history is your passion, you can spend a day visiting the picturesque lighthouses and the concrete military fortresses that are sprinkled around, reflecting Maine’s past as a coastal stronghold.

If shopping and eating are more your scene, you will want to take in Portland’s town centre on foot, so you do not risk missing one of the charming, independent eateries or retailers hidden in the maze of streets.

For shopaholics, every taste is catered for from Maine favourites like Mexicali Blues to national brands, like Alex and Ani. Foodies should call in to The Corner Room and b.good diner, where locally sourced classics are served alongside some quirky specialities like fried Brussels sprouts and potato doughnuts. Coffee lovers can while away an entire afternoon sampling locally roasted brews in Arabica and Bards Coffee.

No visit to the coast would be complete without a boat trip and Portland’s collection of small islands gives you the perfect excuse. Hop on the Casco Bay Ferry, hire a private water taxi, or rent a kayak and do some island-hopping under your own steam. There are plenty of islands to choose from, but put Peaks Island at the top of your list so you can drop in on the Umbrella Cover Museum, the only one of its kind.

Portland is one of those cities that you regret not discovering sooner.

Regardless of your age when you do finally discover it, you will be glad that you did.

We know it seems a bit early, but there are so many Christmas events around the region that a bit of early planning is essential if you’re going to make the most of the run up to December 25th.

So look out your furry Santa hat, indulge in an early mince pie or two and peruse our guide to the best festive events for the whole family…

The shops may have had Christmas stock on display for a few weeks, but for many, the season kicks off when there’s a parade down Union Street and the festive lights are switched on. This year, the tree, gifted by Aberdeen’s twin town Stavanger, will be lit in the Castlegate at 7pm on 23 November after a carol service, and Union Street’s lights are being turned on at 5.30 on Sunday 26 November. You can catch Santa and his reindeer at noon the same day as they go from the Castlegate to the Trinity Centre.

Crafts fairs and farmers markets offer the chance to meet local makers, snap up an unusual gift or two, or just indulge in some local or seasonal delicacies.

The Ministry of Crafts offers a modern take at their fair on 2 December in the Methodist Church on Crown

Terrace, and they’re helping to run the Christmas Fair at Maggie’s Centre in Foresterhill on 28 November.

You’ll also find a number of Craft Roadshow events in Union Square and the Bon Accord Centre throughout November and December. Stonehaven Town Hall hosts Knittykittybangbang’s Craft and Vintage Market on 17 December and there are similar events in many towns in the region.

Chainsaw carver Gary Shand has created 12 totem sculptures representing the 12 days of Christmas, which will be placed across the city centre, so you can track them all down. For some quiet contemplation and a retreat from the hustle and bustle, visit the Nativity Scene in St. Nicholas Kirkyard from 4 December.

The National Trust for Scotland has a raft of festive fairs including Haddo House over the weekend of 4-5 November and Crathes Castle the following weekend. Castle Fraser has Santa Paws McClaws, a

delightful Santa’s Grotto just for pets on 2 December.

The £5 ticket for a pet covers a gift wrapped pressie and a photo with Santa! Castle Fraser will also be screening festive films including Elf and The Grinch in the Great Hall on various dates in December, so bring blankets and a pillow. They are also holding a Christmas Concert with mulled wine and canapes on 8 December.

Bringing blankets and a pillow to this one will probably be frowned upon! If you fancy a trip out of town, Brodie Castle at Forres has two concerts from The Marvel of Peru, playing exquisite Baroque music and festive favourites. Tickets are £15 including traditional mulled wine and mince pies. Book online at nts.org.uk.

Travel back in time with Delgatie Castle’s popular Victorian Christmas Weekends on 26-27 November and 3-4 December. Explore the castle and chat with staff in period costume, visit the local craft stalls to pick up a gift or two and indulge with an award-winning home-baked treat. Tickets are great

value at £5 per person and Santa has a small gift for every child.

Broad Street and Marischal College will be transformed into an alpine style Christmas Village and market with crafts and plenty of festive food and drink stalls. The village will be open from 17 November. The village normally includes a traditional ice rink, fairground rides and a live entertainment marquee to add to the special festive feeling.

The ongoing refurbishment of the Music Hall means a few popular Christmas concerts are missing from this year’s line-up, but there’s still plenty of pantomimes and musical events for the whole family. Jimmy Osmond takes to the stage in HMT’s production of Aladdin, while Beauty and the Beast is on at the Arts Centre, and the Tivoli has the Attic Theatre’s Cinderella.

There are tons of amateur pantos around the North-east too. If your tastes run to the classical, 7 December

sees St. Machar’s Cathedral lit by candlelight for a Winter Chorale, and The Bloody Marys bring their own interpretation of the festive season to the Lemon Tree on 16 December. There’s a free carol concert with the Bon Accord Silver Band at the David Welch Winter Gardens in Duthie Park on Saturday 16 December at 11am and 2pm. Donations for local foodbanks are welcome.

Of course, the fun doesn’t grind to a halt on Christmas Eve. Aberdeen’s popular free Hogmanay celebrations on Union Street will feature fireworks at midnight.

In Stonehaven, the annual Fireballs ceremony marks the passing of the year. It’s best to get there around 10.30pm to ensure a good view! The festive season draws to a close with Burghead’s Burning the Clavie on 11 January, which marks the Old New Year. The Clavie Crew carry a barrel of burning staves round the village and to the top of Doorie Hill after dusk falls.

The Clavie’s embers are said to bring good luck, so grab one if you can.

Aberdeenshire-based Twin River Distillery launches craft whisky product after £200k investment

in the global bar and drinks trade, including a two-year stint in Singapore before joining Dusk Bar in Aberdeen as a Bar Manager in 2015.

Twin River comes from the team behind Deeside Brewery and has recently invested over £200k in the distillery to accommodate the production of its spirits, with plans for new premises in 2018. £1.4m will be invested to build a new brewery, distillery and visitor centre with taproom in the heart of Banchory.

Ryan said: ‘I’m passionate about craft drinks. My experience working in bars around the world has shown me that people want authentic quality when it comes to premium spirits. There is real potential for us to be a leader in the Scottish craft drinks market and I’m excited about being an integral part of Twin River - both in the production of and selling of our products.’

ewly launched Banchory-based Twin River Distillery is expanding its craft drink offering with the production and laying down of its first casks of Twin River Whisky.

Funds for the centre are going to be sought through both internal and external sources including private investment and crowdfunding, via the sale of early release octaves (55 litre casks). Demand has already been high prelaunch and the distillery has received a score of enquiries.

To support with the development and production of its products, the distillery has appointed Andrew Tulloch as a distiller where he’ll be using his brewing knowledge to underpin Twin River Distillery as a key contributor to the craft drinks industry.

‘At 17, I left Brora and came to Aberdeen to study fashion and textile design at Grays School of Art, then started a career in retail visual display’, John explained.

‘I joined Archibalds as display manager, then became director of buying and store manager, before branching out on my own by buying Alexanders in Rosemount.

In 2014, we sold the Alexanders building.

It was one of the hardest business decisions I have had to make, but I’m glad the flooring side of Alexanders is still in Rosemount run by my former business partner.

‘I had painted continuously over the years so I felt this was an ideal opportunity to make the next step and become a full-time artist. Unlike many emerging artists, I could take time to evaluate what I wanted to do with my life and concentrate wholly on my passion for painting. I think artists in Scotland struggle a great deal with little or no help from government or any other organisation. Most need a regular job and the danger in that is that their art becomes their hobby. The true potential of that artist sadly becomes lost or diminished.

‘Previously, I was predominantly a landscape painter, painting in watercolour. Through my connections as a buyer, I was fortunate to sell paintings to Lennox Gallery in Loch Lomond. My work at the moment is mainly figurative. I start with an image of a face or figure and let that image develop in an almost imaginary setting. I start with large sheets of thick

I take great joy in producing pieces of work that are colourful, thoughtprovoking and almost mystical.

watercolour paper and use inks to give texture, colour and pattern. This lets me then develop and expand the painting using acrylic and collage effects.

‘I’ve recently started to produce work that has either gold or silver leaf running though the painting, almost giving a simpler Klimt-like effect to the background. I love the more unknown Klimt works such as The Hope 11, which is full of texture, pattern and vibrancy.

‘My paintings develops of their own accord and I can never be sure how a painting will end up looking. That to me is the joy of the creative process. As I have developed over the last few years the pieces are becoming larger, with the last commissioned piece for a hotel in Portugal measuring 3 metres x 2 metres.

‘Our move to Portugal meant that I could fully concentrate on painting but it also meant that I was now influenced with a much more vibrant colour palette and you can see in the

development of my work that colour became more important. Now that I’m spending more time back in Aberdeen, I don't want to lose the vibrancy of colour and return to a more muted palette.

‘Portugal also meant that I was able to finally have an exhibition of over 30 of my paintings at the Rodnyer Gallery in Cascais and the Centro Ismaili Gallery in Lisbon. Both exhibitions were very well attended by both the press and public and I was lucky to sell the majority of the pieces. This has given me the confidence and drive to work towards an exhibition in Aberdeen, I just have to find the right venue!

Barbering masterclass at Saks The Great British Barber Bash came to Saks Aberdeen recently and the entire team of stylists from both David Lloyd and Union Square salons enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining and educational masterclass.

To start the day, the barbers held a fun demonstration showcasing their barbering skills which was then followed in the afternoon by a hands-on session with the barbers and all the Saks stylists working together.

Duncan Skinner So you thought Aberdeen Football Club’s greatest achievement in Europe was winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983, beating the mighty Real Madrid 2-1 in rain-lashed Gothenburg? Well, think again. You will now have to add another major European honour recently conferred at a ceremony in Geneva on the club’s official charity partner, the Aberdeen FC Community Trust (AFCCT), for its dementia-friendly programme.

In conjunction with other bodies including Alzheimer Scotland, Aberdeen Sports Village and the city council’s health and wellbeing team, more than 100 participants enjoy a variety of experiences every week, including walking football, gym classes, even afternoon disco sessions.

Former Aberdeen players also take old fans down memory lane, reliving past feats on the pitch.

Trust chairman is Duncan Skinner, a youthful and well-coiffed 60 year-old, the son of a vet from Oban and a mum from South Lochs in Lewis. ‘After Dunecht Primary and Cults Academy, Dad’s work took us to Stornoway where I attended the famous Nicolson Institute, and then came back to Aberdeen to study for a business degree at Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology (RGIT),’ he says. ‘I enjoyed a terrific career in the oil and gas industry as a chartered management accountant for 34 years but after calling a halt in 2013, I wanted to put something back into society.’

That’s why is he is so proud that an initiative led by the community trust has been recognised as having the best community and social responsibility programme in this year’s European Club Association awards. A keen golfer and Munro-bagger, Duncan

adds, ‘What makes it even sweeter is that we are in the company of other category winners such as Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon and Monaco’.

He is a great believer in the power of sport.

‘Although I am also a non-executive director on the main board of Aberdeen FC, the trust is quite separate from the football club,’ he adds, ‘and we are able to use its powerful brand to raise substantial funds to deliver change in the community, through the efforts of 20 full-time staff and many volunteers involved in more than 60 activities. The great Denis Law is a patron of the trust, and former Aberdeen and Scotland manager and AFC board member Craig Brown is an ambassador’. The next fundraiser is a dinner at the city’s Marcliffe Hotel and Spa on 16 November.

However, I am meeting Duncan in the boardroom of the custom-built bedmaking factory, Glencraft, in Mastrick and here is another enterprise which has benefited from the expertise of businessmen and women like Duncan, the company chairman.

‘Formerly the Royal Workshops for the Blind, it went into liquidation in 2009 after 170 years but reopened in 2010 with jobs for 42 people who wanted to return,’ he says. ‘You will now find our mattresses in, for example, Balmoral Castle and Gleneagles Hotel .’

Duncan and his wife Jackie have a son, Andrew, who is a sports journalist in Inverness, and a daughter Anna, who is studying animation at Bristol University. But does Jackie ever see Action Man? ‘That’s a good question,’ says Duncan. ‘You had better ask her yourself and chances are you will find her in the garden!’

We're going from strength to strength.

Every issue gets a bit bigger and has a larger distribution. Better yet, we get to go shopping and claim it's essential research. We do a lot of research!

Trend moves into new offices in Holburn Street. We soon regret it, because the new office is always colder inside than outside!

Aberdeen’s performance swimming team is celebrating after collecting an impressive 12 medals at this year’s British Summer Championships, leading to 14 swimmers being called onto national squads. The University of Aberdeen Performance Swimming (UOAPS), led by Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth Games coach Patrick Miley, is a partnership between Aberdeen Sports Village, Aberdeen City Council, Scottish Swimming and the University of Aberdeen and seven of the city’s swimming clubs.

Best garden centre in Scotland The Mains of Drum Garden Centre and Restaurant in Drumoak were recently given one of the highest accolades in the industry from the Garden Centre Association. After inspecting all the garden centres in the whole of the UK they awarded Mains of Drum ‘Best Garden Centre in Scotland’ at their regional awards ceremony. The

GCA asks its garden centre members, from the moment they join, to meet the highest retail standards and to participate in an annual inspection process, to ensure these standards are maintained and improved. The National awards will be announced in January where they will then be judged against the whole of the UK.
