The last year or so hasn’t been easy on anyone. Rates of depression and anxiety have risen considerably, but it’s thought that men may struggle more with mental health because they may be uncomfortable talking about things like feelings.

e live in a society where the majority of men are told that it’s weak to cry or demonstrate their feelings. From a young age, they’re told they have to be stereotypically strong and protective, to suffer stoically and never admit weakness. The thing is, it’s killing them. Figures suggest that around one in eight men has a common mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder. Yet men are less likely to seek or receive professional help for such issues. 36% of NHS referrals for talking therapy are allocated to men. Many also lack the social support network, whether that’s friends, partners or family members that allow them to admit such problems. It’s the done thing to shrug and say you’re fine, even when you really aren’t. This is why three times as many men as women die by suicide. It’s why three quarters of adults who go missing are men and why they have much higher level levels of alcohol and drug dependency. Some studies have suggested that men may be less likely to recognise when they are suffering from a mental health issue. Depression or

anxiety are often dismissed as stress. Men are more likely to show some symptoms of depression than women. These include irritability, sudden anger and increased risk-taking and aggression. Men are more likely to use alcohol and drugs to cope with their depression rather than talking about it. They may use escapist behaviour too, such as throwing themselves into their work. Making simple changes can help you feel better. Arrange to catch up with a friend, or check that they are doing okay with a phone call or Zoom session. Walking has been shown to help beat depression. Try combining an evening walk with mindful practices or transport yourself to another world by listening to an audiobook as you stroll. Or you could try some online fitness classes or sign up for a team sport, get on your bike or head to the gym. A change of scene can help. This can be a simple as going away for a weekend or taking a walk in the woods. Give yourself permission to do things you enjoy and set aside some me time, whether that’s a long bath or starting a veg plot. Cut down on alcohol and eat more healthily. Living on takeaways and

beer may make you feel better temporarily, but it’s not a good way to manage difficult feelings. It’s important to recognise you’re not superhuman. Don’t compare yourself to others, especially on social media. It’s okay to admit you sometimes feel anxious or overwhelmed, or that there are days where you really don’t want to crawl out from under the covers. Asking for help is the first step in recovery. If you’re concerned you’re developing a mental health problem, talk to your GP. It can be daunting, but most people find that speaking to their GP and getting help and support can make a big difference to their lives. You can also talk to Mental Health Aberdeen, a local charity which has been providing counselling for over 70 years, or search online for local support groups. f you’ve been living in furry boots and slippers for the past year, then you may find that your feet have changed shape and heels are no longer comfortable. This may be the perfect excuse to go shoe shopping. Get your feet back into tip top condition first by booking a medical pedicure or medi pedi as it’s known. This is offered by several local podiatry clinics. The medi pedi combines podiatry treatments with a bit of pampering. Nails are cleaned and any corns, calluses and hard skin dealt with, before dry heels are sorted out. This is generally followed by a foot scrub, a mask to rehydrate and soften the skin and a deep moisture treatment and foot massage. Unlike a beauty spa pedicure, your nails remain unvarnished, but your feet will be healthier look better and feel better.

If you don’t need such a heavy duty approach, then try your favourite beauty salon where, for around £15 £60, you can expect to emerge relaxed and perfectly pedicured. Some salons include painting your nails in the price, while others make an additional charge, so check out the pricing before making your appointment. Summer’s most popular shades include corals, which always look great on tanned skin, fruity pastel shades like watermelon, minty greens, pink sorbets and icy blueberry shades. These look great in rainbow combinations. If you’re sticking to a single colour, then lilac might be your best choice, as it’s one of this season’s most popular shades in womenswear. Look for pale creamy whites or the gentlest, barely-there pinks. If you’d rather try a home pedicure, then follow our steps to fantastic feet. Gather up some cotton buds, cotton wool pads, gloves, nail varnish remover, toe separators, foot cream or lotion, a foot file or pumice stone, a towel and a foot spa if you have one. Start by removing the remnants of any existing polish using cotton wool pads soaked in nail varnish remover. Wear rubber or latex gloves if you don’t want to ruin your manicure. Use a basin or foot spa to soak your feet in warm water. You can add bath salts if you have them. After ten minutes, pat one foot dry, then remove dead skin with the foot file or pumice stone. Repeat for the other foot, before

trimming your toenails with clippers or scissors and then filing them. If you like, you can push your cuticles back, but they’re there to protect the nail bed from bacteria, so it’s not an

essential step. You can massage in a little cuticle oil to encourage healthy nails. Use your favourite foot cream or lotion to massage your toes, ankles and calves. Use firm upward stokes on the ankles to encourage the flow of lymph, which carries waste cell products from the body. You can use a face or body lotion for your massage, but this isn’t the time to break out your most expensive moisturiser.

Make sure your nails are dry before grabbing your toe separators and applying a layer of base coat polish. Don’t skip this, especially if you’ve chosen a dark shade, as your toenails may stain without it. It also helps your polish to last longer. Next, paint two thin layers of your chosen polish, allowing sufficient drying time between coats. Finish with a layer of protective top coat and allow yourself at least half an hour of doing nothing to prevent smudges and ruining all your efforts.

Older readers may remember a time when we had weekends - two blissful days at the end of the working week when we went places and did things like go to the cinema or theatre, head out on a mammoth shopping adventure or meet friends for a drink or a meal. We dressed up a little, sometimes we even travelled to a new city or someplace warm! Now that things are opening up again, the weekend is back. Here’s our pick of what to wear…

You’ll need somewhere to keep your beers cold, so think about an ice chest or cooler if you don’t want to keep traipsing into the kitchen all night. You can also install a fridge in your bar shed.

Most local shed building companies are experiencing shortages of timber and a backlog of orders, so you may need to try a few places or buy one online if you are in a hurry. Cordiners offer garden pods, shed and summer houses. If you want something more spacious, try DabDen for a bespoke garden room, or have Papillon Landscaping design your dream space. Maybe create a multi-purpose space that can serve as a home office then convert to a games room and bar?

There are around 25 active breweries in the North-east, so considerable research may be required when it comes to deciding what to stock in your garden bar. Then there are at least 20 local artisan gin makers and Speyside offers some of the world’s best whiskies, so be prepared to invest considerable effort in this phase of creating your perfect garden bar. Outdoor heating is a must, especially if you want to use your space all year round. Patio heaters are one option, but a fire pit provides a great focal point as well as cooking possibilities. Rustle up some baked

A pizza oven is another option, but ordering for delivery or buying in some treats you’re your local deli may be easier. Look for comfortable seating that encourages relaxation. You’re looking for something you can slouch in and unwind for a few hours, rather than something stylish but uncomfortable. Lots of cushions and cosy throws mean you can use the space when nights become a little

chillier. Gazebos or a bell tent offer shelter and can be packed away for the winter. There are plenty of lighting options, but some of the prettiest are outdoor lanterns or strings of lights that can be hung from trees. Solar powered lights are a good choice unless you plan to use the space on winter evenings, if which case, battery powered choices may be more reliable. The only other things you’ll need are some glasses and a bottle opener. Cheers!

The New Tartan Ball bounces back Time to get your glad rags on. freshest fish Despite having some of the world’s best fish and seafood being landed every day at Peterhead, Aberdeen and other North-east ports, many of us are at bit of a loss when it comes to knowing what to do with fish if it doesn’t come covered in batter and sitting beside a portion of chips. Perhaps that’s because we didn’t understand the health benefits of eating fish and because much of our seafood was shipped to France and Spain. Visit any fish shop in Aberdeen or the shire and you’ll find an enthusiast behind the counter. They’re happy to explain the difference between halibut and herring, share what’s best in season and provide ideas on how to make the most of sustainably caught species. It’s a world away from bland supermarket offerings.

Farmers markets The North-east’s farmers markets are a great way to buy specialist ingredients directly from the producers. Most have stalls selling locally landed fish, home-cured bacon and sausages, artisan cheeses and a mouth-watering array of breads and baked products. Some also have local breweries, cider and liqueur producers, fudge makers, tea importers, organic veg sellers, plant nurseries and a host of other micro-businesses.

Most run on Saturdays, with a regular schedule. You’ll find markets in Stonehaven, Peterhead, Westhill and Huntly on the first Saturday of each month, Inverurie and Aboyne on the second Saturday, Banchory on the third, Ballater and Ellon on the forth and Macduff on the last Saturday of the month. Some markets have yet to reopen, including the city’s Belmont Street Market and the Torphins Market, which was held at Platform 22 from 10-2 on Wednesdays.

AFFA FINE Affa Fine also offer markets in the Events Field at Milton of Crathes which combine food, crafts and a car boot sale. You can check the schedule at affafinemarkets. co.uk. Meet Alan Clarke, Head Chef at Maryculter House I signed up for a professional cookery course when I was 16 or 17. At 21, I joined Ardoe House where I was the runner up in the group’s global competition for young chefs. I worked at Skye’s The Three Chimneys, before heading back to the Ardoe and then moving to Maryculter House Hotel. When I’m not in the kitchen, Finley, our baby, and our new house keep me busy, though I still like to get out and about when time allows. At Maryculter House, we change the menus every three or four weeks to make the most of

seasonal produce. We have six starters, six main courses and six desserts, each of which involves a lot of different elements. As a chef, I’m always interested in food. Some of the best I’ve ever eaten would be from Michael Smith, of Loch Bay in Skye. His Orbost skink is amazing, though the weirdest thing I’ve tried was during a blind taste test. Let’s just say you’ll never find dried crispy spiders on the menu here!

STRAWBERRIES 500g Castleton strawberries 60g caster sugar 14g water 30g butter 1tsp lemon juice

FOR THE TOPPING 80g plain flour 50g caster sugar 20g brown sugar 55g butter

CRÈME ANGLAISE 150ml double cream 150ml full fat milk 5ml vanilla extract 4 egg yolks 75g granulated sugar

METHOD Crumble topping Pre-heat the oven to 160oC (fan-assisted) or 180oC (no fan). Rub the butter into the flour until you get a breadcrumbs texture. Mix through both sugars and then spread the mixture evenly onto greaseproof paper on a flat tray. Bake in the oven at 160oC for eight minutes. Then use a cookie cutter roughly the size of a saucer and cut through it while still warm. Put back in the oven for a further three minutes to fully cook the crumble disk, remove from oven, set aside and allow to cool Crème anglaise Put the cream, milk, and vanilla extract into a small saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Then whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until its paste like. Once the liquid has boiled, slowly add the egg and sugar paste and whisk continuously until it thickens. Once thickened remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly before serving. Strawberries (make once crumble disks are made) Make a caramel with the caster sugar, water and butter in a small saucepan on a high heat. Add strawberries and lemon juice, then heat through again. Remove from heat and allow to cool. PLATING Spoon strawberries and caramel into the base of a bowl and place the crumble dish on top. Serve with the warm custard.

istorically, Aberdeen has been the home to some of the most influential and famous whisky companies over the last 200 years. However, there may be a case that the Aberdeen’s Whisky history books go back much further and a new chapter is about to be written. Ardent Spirits, the company behind Burn o’Bennie Distillery in Banchory, is about the launch a new range of independently bottled whiskies. There has been an exciting renaissance in the Scotch Whisky industry but looking to lead that renaissance in Scotland’s third most populous city is Ardent Spirits. As well as bottling single cask whiskies and rums, Ardent Spirits also began producing its future whisky at its new Burn o’Bennie Distillery, based in Banchory the gateway to Royal Deeside. Burn o’Bennie has recently expanded and will now have the capability to produce over 400,000 litres a year. In 2019, researchers from the University of Aberdeen found records from 1505 proving there was a still for making ‘aquavite’ (Middle Scots word for ‘Water of Life’ referring to Whisky) in the city’s UNESCO records. Although not the first reference to whisky (that was in 1494), it is the earliest mention of a still used to distil a spirit for consumption. In far more recent history, Scotch whisky lovers will be aware of the Chivas Brothers opening their Aberdeen

emporium after being fascinated by the world of taste and smell. This emporium was the start of one of the most sought after Blended Scotch Whiskies in the world, Chivas Regal. As well as the industry giants Chivas Regal having been born in Aberdeen, the independent bottlers William Cadenhead Ltd was founded in 1842 and was in the ownership of the same family until it was taken over by the well-known Campbeltown firm of J & A Mitchell & Co. Ltd who own Springbank Distillery. The home of Cadenhead’s was in the Netherkirkgate area of Aberdeen and operated there for 130 years of their trading. Ardent Spirits is a company full of whisky geeks that aim to breath some fresh air into the industry and looks to revitalise Aberdeen’s strong whisky heritage as well as represent the local Aberdeen community. Aberdeen is home to some of the most revered academic establishments as well as hosts of the only street art festival in Scotland. Ali Baxter says that “The whisky industry can seem like a very serious and daunting place at times, we want to create a brand in which everyone is welcome, and we can have a laugh. Let’s make whisky fun again!” Much like the city of Aberdeen itself, Ardent Spirits looks to tie the traditional with the modern and add a fresh new perspective on the industry. Soft fruits, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cherries, green vegetables such as runner beans and broad beans, root vegetables including beetroot and carrots are all at their peak right now. Get the blender out and get creative. Smoothies are a great way to hide lots of fruit and vegetables into a delicious, thick and tasty drink. Berries, Greek yoghurt and your choice of milk, is a quick wake up breakfast option. Add in some beetroot for an extra splash of colour. Kids enjoy helping by blitzing everything up.

Alternatively, carrots and orange juice go perfectly together, add a pinch of fresh ginger for a touch of heat (if they like things with a kick!). If they’re not looking, sneak in some green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and celery and add a banana and coconut milk for a fresh ‘Hulk smoothie’. You could even throw in a few super fresh mangetout peas - they taste amazing blended up. We all have too much food waste, but you can save any leftover smoothie mix by pouring it into ice lolly moulds and popping them in the freezer. Healthy ice-lollies are a great way to cool down on a hot day!

A blaze of colour

Kirsty McLean shares how to bring colour into your garden…

ecently, I was asked if formal borders still had a place in the garden. I’d say that the concept of a border has certainly changed. A succession of adventurous garden designers have pushed the boundaries and taken us from rectangular lawns with landing strip paths and borders adorned with regimental rows of highly-coloured annuals to the antithesis of this in wild flower meadows and prairie style planting. I think for most city or suburban gardens however, the border will always survive

as it’s such a great way of packing a lot of colour and interest into a relatively small space. Colour is a huge element when it comes to planning and the enjoyment of the garden but colour in isn’t necessarily restricted to plants. It can also come from paving, walling, furniture, planters, structures, fences and can be used to create mood, stimulation, focal points, temperature and style. Understanding colour and how to use it gives you control and helps you to achieve whatever effect you desire. By understanding the colour wheel and the relationship between colours this can provide helpful direction when choosing planting schemes. Green and different shades of green can produce a very calming effect, throw in whites and creams to contrast against this and you create a sophisticated, cool feel that can be pulled toward an

informal design when used with flowing shapes of borders or give a contemporary look where the structure of the design is more geometric. One of my favourite combinations is a beautifully clipped Prunus Lusitanica hedge or pleached Hornbeam trees as a back drop, underplanted with a solid planting of Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ edged with clipped box. If you want to create a subtle introduction of colour within this scheme, then add Alliums and Agapanthus through the border to create a fresh look. Pastel colours evoke a peaceful, soft feel that creates a relaxing atmosphere. Combining soft tones of pinks, purples, blues, creams and greens can’t help but take you to a country cottage garden feel. If you add a strong evergreen structure such as clipped yew or box to edge then you can create something more contemporary. The position of the border – in sun or shade - will dictate the choices of plants.

If you have a sunny border then consider the following combinations: Back of border: Lavatera, Thalictrum delavayi, dwarf Delphiniums, Hollyhocks, Campanula glomerata Superba, Phlox paniculata Middle of border: Eryngium ‘Blue Hobbit’, Anemone huphensis, Salvia x superba, Salvia Nemorosa, Monarda, Astrantias, Penstemons Front of border: Stachys Byzantina, Geranium Rozanne, Sedum Spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’, Origanum Vulgare, Nepeta ‘Walkers Low’, Dianthus deltoides, Thymus x citriodorus, Saxifragas It’s best to plant in groups using odd numbers. A group of three or five plants, looks better than four or six. Borders that have fewer varieties of plants, but bigger planting groups can be more impactful that lots of single plants.

Where colour is concerned, the same general rules can apply to shrubs and trees, where you will create colour through their leaf or blooms. Mixed borders are also very successful where you create a ‘back-bone’ of shrubs with a healthy percentage of evergreen’s and fill in the spaces with perennials and edging plants. The main thing to remember when you are looking at colour is that bright colours can draw attention and make spaces seem smaller, dark colours tend to make areas look larger than they are. But don’t be afraid to break the ‘rules’ and just do what you feel good about. As long as you do it with confidence, it will look fabulous! gardendesignscotland.com

oray is great for antique hunting, with sizeable selections at Auldearn near Nairn and in Cullen. It’s also home to some of Scotland’s best distilleries and many have visitors’ centres and tasting tours. There’s even a Malt Whisky Trail. If you’d prefer to stay sober, then there are some great walks and hiking routes throughout the region. The disused railway line from Hopeman to Burghead makes for a pleasant afternoon stroll, while the Cairngorms offer a heaven for Munro baggers, walkers, climbers and mountain bikers. If you prefer four wheels to two and don’t mind unknotting your hair afterwards, try hiring a Caterham from Highland Caterham Hire. Alternatively, the Moray Motor Museum may provide a more sedate automotive treat.

’ve been at the Esslemont since we opened in August 2019, first as Bar Manager, then as Restaurant Manager since the start of 2020. We had only been open for 6 months before the first lockdown hit. This was followed by a series of reopening and closing again as the pandemic really took hold. Hopefully with things slowly getting back to normal we will get the opportunity to properly establish ourselves as one of the best places to eat and drink in Aberdeen. We’re in the former Esslemont & Macintosh building on Union Street. The department store was always the first port of call for Aberdonian shoppers since it opened in 1873. After lying empty for many years, it was transformed into a stylish bar and restaurant. The interior design pays tribute to its history with small touches such as display cabinets containing dress makers chalk and old Aberdeen school ties. Like many locals, I can remember being dragged to E&M to buy my school uniforms! I have been in the hospitality industry for over 25 years, working in many of the city’s hostelries in various positions over those years. I joined The McGinty’s Group in 2015 and was previously bar manager at No10 Bar and Restaurant before moving to The Esslemont. We aim to provide our guests with a relaxed dining experience, with great food in comfortable and stylish surroundings. As with all our venues across The McGinty’s Group, a huge focus is placed on customer service. Customer feedback has been excellent since re-opening post lockdown. We’re all so glad to be back. The seemingly endless weeks stuck at home are hopefully

behind us all now. When I get time away from work I’m a keen, but terrible, golfer. I also do a bit of football coaching with one of the youth teams at Banks O’ Dee Football Club and have been trying to work through my coaching badges. We provide a little bit of something for everyone at The Esslemont. You can opt for lunch or brunch with 2 courses for £15 including the ever popular Eggs Benedict or Buttermilk Chicken and Waffles or splash out a little more in the evening or weekend with a 16oz Chateaubriand for two, the choice is yours. We have our Sunday Roast menu that I think is the best roast in town. We also have a separate vegan menu, gluten free menu and of course a menu for the little ones too. Our talented kitchen team have created a varied menu using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Our current menu includes a classic, Johnshaven sourced, lobster thermidor and my personal favourite, the roast pork fillet, wrapped in bacon and served with soft black pudding, sauteed potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli and a toffee apple jus. The bar at the Esslemont has a beautifully styled and imposing back bar creating the perfect space to stay and enjoy a drink or two. Our skilled bar team create their seasonal cocktail menus. It can be difficult to get the right balance between being a restaurant and being a bar but luckily I was able to draw on the experience of working at No10 Bar and Restaurant which has a very similar set up. Some of our team work in both the restaurant and the bar, so they can provide great table service in the restaurant but they can also knock up a mean cocktail!
