EDITOR Hello again, This time of year is all about new possibilities and opportunities. We’ve been allowed to take our face coverings off, but many of us are still a bit unsure about jumping back in to the social whirl. It’s a time to stand back for a moment, to stop and smell the flowers and to consider what really matters. The past couple of years have meant a great deal of change for us all. Our priorities have changed and many of us are finding the rising cost of everything from food to fuel bills means we have to be more discerning about how we spend our cash. That’s why we’re focussing on some of the free attractions that the city and shire offers in this issue. We sometimes forget the wealth of natural and cultural attractions we have because we live here. It’s easy to take our surroundings for granted. It’s time to think like a tourist and explore what’s on offer with new eyes. It might be a simple picnic in the park, watching the sunrise over the ruins of Slains Castle or exploring the Art Gallery. It might be a beach litter pick, dolphin spotting, climbing Bennachie or simply easing yourself back into your social life by catching up with a friend over coffee in a café or a glass or two of wine in your own garden.

IT’S NOT SOMETHING WE’VE SEEN MUCH OFF IN THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS THANKS TO WORKING FROM HOME AND TRAVEL BANS. JUST IN CASE YOU’VE FORGOTTEN, YOUR LEGS ARE THE BITS THAT GO FROM YOUR BOTTOM ALL THE WAY DOWN TO YOUR FEET. YOU’LL PROBABLY FIND THEM IN YOUR JOGGERS OR SWEATPANTS. THIS MAY BE TRAUMATISING, BUT FASHION HAS DECREED THAT BOTH SHORTS AND THE MINI SKIRT ARE BACK IN STYLE. Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to get your legs back in a fit state if you want to strut your stuff.
If you’re pale and pasty, then tanning can make your legs look slimmer and healthier. The Sun Spot on Broomhill Road are known for their excellent customer care and often have special offers on blocks of sunbed sessions. They’re really good at providing aftercare advice and unlike self-tanning, there’s no chance of streaks with a sunbed, so you can build up a natural looking tan gradually. Now’s also a good time to book yourself in for a medical pedicure or a bit of pampering so your feet look good in summer mules, slides or sandals. If you prefer a smooth leg, then there are a few methods that last a lot longer than shaving or home depilatories. Waxing is an option, provided you can cope with the momentary pain and don’t mind looking like a plucked chicken for a day or two afterwards. Alternatively Clinetix Grampian offer laser hair reduction treatment in courses of three or six treatments using the GentleLasePro Laser from Candela, the gold standard in laser hair removal. Laser hair reduction is suitable for men and women, most skin types and all areas of the body. It also eliminates uncomfortable bumps caused by in-grown hairs, by destroying the affected hair follicles.

These can be very unsightly and embarrassing for sufferers and are often a reason people keep legs covered up. It’s not always easy to get back to better health, particularly if you have a chronic underlying health condition, haven’t exercised since school PE lessons or if you’re recovering from some form of injury. Luckily, there are now several specialist providers of gentle, supportive exercise and therapies which can be adapted to suit your individual circumstances.

o matter how unfit you are or where you’re starting from, there’s a class or one to one training that will set you back on the path to better health. Even a little exercise can help improve conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, arthritis, neurological conditions, restricted movement or flexibility issues and you’re never too old to get started. The Wallace Practice offer specialist Pilates classes for those with neurological conditions, osteoporosis or arthritis. They’re also a great choice if you have restricted movement or an old injury as there’s a personal assessment before booking a block of classes and the classes are led by experienced physiotherapists who can modify the exercises to suit your needs. those who have suffered a stroke. These are held at Aberdeen Sports Village. MSK Sports Therapy and Injury Clinic also offer Pilates classes at their base in Tullos. If you have back or musculoskeletal issues, then Inverurie Chiropractic Clinic can offer advice on how to look after your back and how to get back to health. As well as spinal manipulation, the staff at the award-winning clinic provide sports and remedial massage, exercise programmes, postural advice, acupuncture, fitness training, reflexology, yoga, nutritional advice and health and wellbeing counselling. Yoga can also be a great reintroduction to exercise with its combination of gentle, but deep stretching and mental wellbeing benefits. Look for an experienced teacher who offers one-to-one instruction before joining a class, because this ensures that your stance is correctly adjusted to take any restrictions into account. The road to better health can be a long one, but at least there’s plenty of professional support to help you take your first steps and guide you on your journey.

Befriend a Child provides all volunteers with full training and support, so volunteers don’t need to have any previous experiences working with children. ompared to the arguably medieval origins of Mother’s Day, Father’s Day is a relative newcomer. The first celebration was organised at the YMCA in Spokane in 1910 and the idea for Father’s Day came from Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted to honour her father, a veteran who raised his six children as a single parent.
The Germans celebrate with a group hike pulling a small wagon loaded with beer or wine and indulging in sausage-based cuisine. It’s thought the tradition has evolved from Ascension Day processions where the most prolific father in the village would be presented with a large ham. Official statistics show that alcohol-related traffic accidents rise three-fold on Father’s Day.
The concept was embraced by businesses more quickly than the public, with Hallmark, the greeting card company claiming it’s now the fifth biggest card-sending holiday and cigarette lighter company Flaminaire almost singlehandedly responsible for introducing the idea to France. Even now, Wikipedia suggests that neckties, hammers and golf clubs are the most popular gifts.
In India, the custom has been imported into the major cities, where a family meal and gift giving are the norm. In the North Eastern state of Nagaland, it’s a huge holiday involving church prayers and presents. Fathers in Japan can look forward to gifts of sake or gourmet treats. While in Sri Lanka, many schools hold special events to honour fathers. Dutch fathers can look forward to breakfast in bed and family dinners, often at grandparent’s houses or restaurants. They are also presented with gifts their children have made at school. Handmade gifts are sweet, but remarkably few dads really want a personalised jar of Marmite, or yet another pair of novelty socks.

I
started out in my first kitchen when I was still at school, working as a kitchen porter. I loved the teamwork and enrolled in the Professional Cookery course at Aberdeen College, going on to get my HNC. During my first year at college, I got a Commis Chef position at the Palm Court Hotel and have continued to progress my career in different hotels around the city ever since. I’ve learnt something from everybody I have ever worked with. When I’m not working, I like to spend time with my family and friends. Quite often, I’ll drag them to different restaurant so I can see what other people are doing and to experience it as a customer. I’m still trying to play football, too. Kitchens never stop and no two days are the same. It definitely keeps you on your toes and I love being part of a team and everyone having their own part to play. I think you really have to love what you do to succeed in this industry. I joined the Cognito on the Corner team back in 2017, watching the restaurant grow from a shell of a building to the cosy and intimate setting it is today. Now that the restaurant is
called Milton on the Corner I’m so excited to be part of a locally based independent company. We have a lot of regular customers and really feel part of the Rosemount community. We serve the highest quality Scottish cuisine in a casual dining experience. As a head chef, I’m lucky to have the best ingredients to work with. Our fresh fish is delivered daily from Peterhead Harbour by Blue Flag. We use Scottish beef for our burgers and steaks from our local butchers McWilliams. All our fruit, vegetables and dairy are supplied to us through Turriffs of Montrose and at this time of year the fresh berries are amazing! I love developing new dishes for our menu. We’ll often try them as a special to see how our regulars like it. I try to choose flavour combinations that people are going to like. My current favourite is our Oven baked Cod Loin served with Chorizo & Red Pepper Croquettes, Green Vegetables and a Butternut Squash Puree. Visually it looks fantastic on the plate and all the colours pop. The smooth and silky puree along with the crunch of the croquette and the delicate cod. As the MasterChef people would say, ‘It’s a great plate of food.’

It’s not often that there’s a whole new town in our corner of the world, but Chapelton – or Chapelton of Elsick, to give it its full name, is just that.
T
he drive into Chapelton is visually pleasing. All the housing styles work together to create a distinctive style that’s reminiscent of the charming salt-box homes found in New England or Canada’s eastern seaboard. There’s a great mix of family homes, flats and some superb retirement living options from Brio. The countryside setting, about 10 miles south of the city, combines attractive views and walking and cycle paths with the convenience of being able to reach the city centre in around 15 minutes. Despite being a relatively new community, there are plenty
of events and traditions that shape the character of the town. Autumn brings the town’s Scarecrow festival which is hotly contested and features a great deal of ingenuity. There are allotments, regular farmers markets, festive craft workshops, a 10K fun run and a charity bike ride each year, so there’s always something going on. As you might expect, even the shops are individual and interesting. You’ll find The Lounge at Chapelton on Hume Square, an attractive grassy space that forms heart of the community. It’s a great hair and beauty salon, majoring in Elemis face and body treatments,
massages and holistic therapies. They have a great reputation for colour and flattering cuts too. It’s a great choice for a bit of pampering, or a whole new look all at out of town prices. The Boxes at Chapelton are a colourful selection of small independent shops, with enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful staff. It’s best to check current opening hours for each business on their Facebook pages. Wander and Graze is a perfect little deli offering a selection of local and more exotic produce. You’ll find artisan cheeses, breads and crackers, charcuterie
and high quality grocery items. They also do a mean bacon roll, some great bagel bombs and a cinnamon bun that’s worth the trip alone. When it comes to gifting and homewares, The Omnia always has a fabulous selection of cushions, scented candles, vases and home décor accessories, like glass bon bon jars, cake stands and ginger jars. Everything is well chosen and thoughtfully curated, so the main difficulty is in choosing a gift that you won’t want to keep for your own home. Red Rocks has a sparkling selection of bespoke bridal jewellery, hairpieces and gifts created by Gray’s graduate Claire Notarangelo. You’ll find everything from silver and pearls to lamp-worked glass beaded bracelets to costume pieces and will probably be overwhelmed with the desire to own a tiara. Next door, Cowdray Hall is another great city centre source of free entertainment. The venue hosts a series of free lunchtime classical music concerts and other events that feature some incredibly talented musicians. If it’s quiet outside, you can probably pat William Macmillan’s recumbent lion sculpture, though sitting astride it is frowned upon. The lion forms the centrepiece of the city’s War Memorial and is also featured on the Sculpture Trail, which is a great way of spending a sunny afternoon and getting in some exercise. NUART is another option for a free art-based day out and there will be new works gracing the some of the city’s wall this June.
The great outdoors
If you’re more the outdoors type, then the city’s parks offer plenty ways of keeping the family amused. Duthie Park and Hazelhead are particularly good choices, or you could go for a walk or bike ride along the old Deeside railway line which runs from Duthie Park all the way to Peterculter and Drumoak. It’s part of the Deeside way which stretches from the city to Braemar, if you’re up for a challenge. Of course there are plenty of other countryside options that are free to explore. You could head into the Cairngorm range, climb Bennachie or head south to the Angus Glens for a day’s hillwalking, while Loch Muick is always a popular walk on a sunny day. How about a dawn picnic watching the sunrise over Slains Castle, or a bit of beachcombing? Staying in the countryside, the National Trust for Scotland properties generally involve a considerable entry fee if you’re not a member, but you can generally explore the estate grounds for free. Some venues, like Crathes Castle and Drum Castle have good free playgrounds and picnic areas, if you want to take your own snacks. Similarly, Historic Environment Scotland look after 55 properties in the North and Grampian region and it’s free to explore some of these. They range from castle ruins to Pictish stones, kirks, brochs, Neolithic cairns and earth-houses. You can also find some free charity or community events, like beach cleans at Greyhope Bay where you might also spot a dolphin or two if you’re lucky. Sometimes, you can have a lot of fun without it costing the earth!

Now, after a wait of almost two years, the postponed events will be taking place across the rest of this year. The MHAsterminds Black-Tie Quiz Night is the largest of their planned events and takes place taking place at The Chester Hotel on Friday 7th October. Teams from across the North East are
invited to come together for a night of fizz, food, and fundraising, as well competing to win top prizes. The money raised on the evening are to be shared across the six current projects within MHA, which support the mental well-being of children and adults in Aberdeen City and Shire. Half a century of kitchen trends Back when we started Drumoak Kitchens in 1972, a lot of things were very different. We’d just joined the EU and Spanish package holidays were the height of sophistication. Oil had come to Aberdeen and looking good meant flares, platform shoes and mini-skirts. Glam rock and heavy metal filled the charts and space hoppers were all the rage. The seventies was the decade that saw most change when it came to kitchens. At the beginning of the 1970s only 70% of households had a fridge and about two thirds of homes had a washing machine. A decade later and 92% had a fridge and 80% had a washing machine. Freezers were still a new-fangled luxury, found in just 7% of homes. Dishwashers, microwaves, boiling water taps and decent coffee machines were still decades away. In terms of interiors, warm, earthy colours and bold patterns dominated. Even bathrooms were a riot of colour with suites in avocado or burnt orange. Everyone desired a farmhouse style pine kitchen, where they would rustle up posh dinner party delights like prawn cocktails or Black Forest Gateau. In the 80s the focus changed as we became more high tech. It was an era of aspirational yuppies, Italian furniture in black leather and chrome and a more international approach to food. Kitchens became places to entertain and show off your culinary skills as celebrity chefs took over the TV and bestsellers lists. Everyone had a Delia cook book. The rustic kitchen look gave way to sleek minimalist designs in white, cream or black. U-shaped kitchens and island units or breakfast bars became trendy as kitchens
became more formal entertaining spaces, complete with colour-pop bar stools and granite worktops. The nineties saw another shift in kitchen use, as we abandoned our dining rooms and ate ready meals in front of the TV. The frenetic urban vibe of the 80s gave way to a more relaxed approach, with painted wood kitchens and easy-clean laminate work surfaces and flooring. Pastel accessories and window dressings made a comeback too. Fast forward to today and kitchens have become the heart of the home once more. The 2000s saw a move towards open plan, multifunctional living spaces. Family homes often combined dining spaces and play areas as family rooms, with patio doors leading to the garden. New build flats often had open plan kitchen and living areas. We became foodies, sourcing exotic ingredients and experimenting with different cuisines and eating more healthily. Our food became much more global, and our kitchen gadgets changed to reflect this. Built in appliances like upscale barista style coffee machines, internet connected fridges, under-counter wine fridges and woks became the must have features, as larger range cookers dominated. Baking also made a huge comeback, thanks to TV and lockdown, with stand mixers, juicers and blenders becoming desirable. In the fifty years that we’ve been designing, manufacturing and installing our kitchens, some things have changed beyond recognition, but I’m proud to say that our commitment to great design and craftsmanship remains constant.

‘Nowadays, there are silk and synthetic flowers that look incredibly real. They’re a fabulous way of injecting colour into event décor, whether it’s a charity ball, an intimate wedding or even as window dressing in a retail environment, like some of the shops in the city’s West End. It’s an instant moodbooster. Flowers just bring a smile to all the guests’ faces and you can use out of season flowers for extra impact. ‘At Adesso, we have a massive collection of faux florals available to hire, whether it’s a

floral wall to use as a backdrop for incredible Instagram shots, arches, or table decorations. ‘Whether we’re working with florals or other styles of event decoration, we consider a lot of different factors when it comes to putting our initial design ideas together. The venue space, the flow of guests, backdrops and focal points, areas for photography and practical aspects like the event décor needing to work with what’s happening during the event, like dancing or having a sit down-meal. The entrance is also really important as we want guests to feel like
they are stepping into a different world. ‘People often think that using an event decorator like Adesso must be very expensive. That’s not necessarily the case. The day featured a fashion show with clothes from Tiger Lily Boutique, afternoon tea and music from C Red. DJ Kenny McAllister had the guests bopping away all night and the organisers had to dash round Laurencekirk buying every bottle of prosecco after selling out their stock in the first two hours!

GARDEN DESIGNER KIRSTY MCLEAN OFFERS SOME IDEAS FOR SHELTERED SEATING…
Our outdoor space has become one of the most desirable attributes for homes in recent years and 2022 is warming up to be no different. One of the best ways to really enjoy the summer months and extend the season beyond, is to create a covered space in the garden. A sitooterie - if you will – can work in any size and shape of garden. These structures can be used to zone the garden, create an outdoor room, or act as an extension to the house, to create a focal point or as a stand-alone building. They’re great for daytime use or for lazy evenings. With the addition of heat and light, these can make for a wonderful and welcoming space, even in the winter months. Here are a few of my favourites: LOUVRE POD: This is an aluminium, powder-coated frame with optional roof louvres that can be set to open or shut, making it weatherproof. It comes with side screens in weatherproof material or a mixture of glass and weatherproof material, so can be configured to suit your requirements.
PERGOLA: As a standalone structure in the garden, the humble pergola can be designed in so many styles but the basics are usually the same. By using clear Polycarbonate /Plexi-glass sheeting, you can fix this across the span of the roof to create complete shelter from the weather or use climbing plants to clothe the structure. Others come with a solid roof.
PAVILION: Created with fixed seating and a half open structure, this gives a cosy area in the garden whilst taking in the wider views. It’s obviously not a year-round structure. GARDEN POD: These are so funky and come in all shapes, sizes, colours and combinations, working particularly well in modern, urban spaces. The cosy corner: Where you have a cosy little corner that is currently dead space, why not try this? It’s a hybrid of a summerhouse and an arbour. It can be painted and you can jazz it up with coloured cushions, fairy lights, rugs, and planters. THE COVERED ARBOUR: Even if you have a tiny garden, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Try a covered arbour seat. THE GARDEN ROOM: Garden rooms made an impact on the garden some years ago and certainly haven’t lost their appeal with more and more designs coming out every season. There’s something to suit every taste.
PORTABLE POSSIBILITIES: If you’re looking for something that you can put away in the winter, then there are so many options to choose from including pop-up gazebos and sail canopies. With a bit of styling using fairy lights, festoon lights, lanterns, outdoor rugs, planters and creating a bit of heat through fire bowls, fire pits, chimineas, fire cubes, you can create a warm and welcoming space to share with family and friends.
THE AWNING: If you’d prefer something neater that takes up little space, awnings are the way to go. They come in a range of colours and their cantilevered system, often remotely operated, covers a surprising range of distance. They disappear into a neat, compact housing on the house wall or whatever structure you want to use them against

It’s why they stick things into plug sockets and eat creepy crawlies. Kikkerland have a new range of cardboard kits called Newton’s Lab. Their appeal is two-fold because not only do you – sorry, your children – get to build something, you then get to play with it. There’s a hydraulic claw set that’s ideal for budding mechanical engineers and a painting pendulum that proves science is an art. You can often find Kikkerland’s range at local garden centres. Edx are great for toys which help younger children learn counting and basic maths skills. There are measuring and balancing scales, sorting toys and some great activity kits. Their Monster Counters Activity Set is suitable for ages three and up and lots of sorting, matching and counting activities using six different types of cute little monsters. They also do some superb early maths kits for 4-5 year olds that build numeracy, problem-solving and logic skills. MEET IONA FYFE AND FLORENCE JACK, TWO ABERDEENSHIRE SINGER SONGWRITERS WITH BIG AMBITIONS ION A FY FE Scots Language singer Iona Fyfe was born in Huntly and is now based in Glasgow after graduating from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She’s known for her renditions of Scottish folk songs and now writes her own songs in Scots. It’s a language she’s passionate about, having persuaded Spotify to add Scots to its list of languages and campaigning for Scots, Doric and other dialects to be given protection and promotion. In 2021, she became the first ever singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards and has been featured on Radio 2, Radio Scotland and on TV. ‘My music is rooted in tradition, especially the traditions of the North East of Scotland, like bothy ballads.’ Iona explained. ‘My first album featured several bothy ballads, but with modern interpretations. I’m really interested in taking the Scots language into new genres and contexts – our native languages don’t need to be tied to our traditional music. There are Welsh language songs performed in several different genres, but with Scots and Gaelic language, it seems to be intrinsically linked with our traditional music. ‘As a performer, the pandemic was difficult to navigate. We’re rescheduling performances and releasing new music. The Blue Lamp is probably my favourite North-east venue.
I’ve been singing there since I was 16. It’s an incredibly welcoming, inclusive and supportive environment. ‘I’m very excited about performing my first US west coast tour in September, so I’m looking forward to an exciting opportunity to bring my music, language, tradition and culture to new audiences. F LO RENCE JACK ‘When I was really young, my mother taught me a couple of tunes on the piano and my older sister was a keen violinist and pianist. I took classical piano, cello and singing lessons throughout my time at school and now I write, record and mix all my songs up in my loft,’ Florence said. ‘My first proper appearance was at a charity ball for Friends of Anchor. It was in a large gazebo in Duthie Park and I played on a beautiful glass piano from Gordon Bell Pianos. Stonehaven Folk Club have been very supportive and performing there really gave me a buzz and fulfilment out of performing my songs. ‘Currently, I have been focusing on creating music to release this year and have been collaborating with other musicians and songwriters. I have been very excited as recently I have had a number of my songs played on BBC Introducing Scotland and BBC Radio Rapal, part of the Gaelic station. I’m really looking forward to lining up some gigs this summer and I’m hoping to release an EP at some stage. ‘My music is a mixture of Pop and Lo-fi with hints of jazz/folk too. As well as writing songs that get people up dancing and feeling good, I love writing piano ballads. I want people to relate to my lyrics and go through their own emotional journey when listening to my songs. I find songwriters like Taylor Swift, Tom Odell, and Sara Bareilles inspiring. Their song writing is a form of poetry. Both Ivin and I share a Malaysian heritage, so our values are similar,’ Lisa explained. ‘I grew up with a Scottish father and a Chinese-Malaysian mother, living in Australia and Malaysia before moving to St. Andrews and then undertaking my dental degree in Dundee.

vin added, ‘I’ve always been entrepreneurial. In Malaysia, I started my own design and print business at 27, sold it a decade later and invested in property, before moving to Scotland in 2007. Lisa was still working as an NHS Consultant Orthodontist then, but she joined the Orthodontic Clinic in Aberdeen in 2010 and we bought the business between us in 2014, then moved it to purposebuilt premises in 2018. It was a case of seeing the potential there and it being the right time, right place for us to take it over and build it to be the success we knew it could be.’ Lisa commented, ‘We accept both NHS and private patients and I always get a thrill when patients share their stories and what their treatment means to them. NHS orthodontic treatment is based on eligibility and strict dental health guidelines involving moderate to severe problems. There is a waiting list for NHS treatment and approval must be granted. Private orthodontic treatment provides
the opportunity to receive tailormade treatment using almost invisible braces like Invisalign and Incognito, or ceramic braces as opposed to metal braces.’ ‘Every day, I see the power a smile can have to improve patients’ lives and regain their confidence and I’m very grateful for what I do. When I’m not in the clinic, I love travelling, the cinema and swimming. I’m always keen to try new cuisines and restaurants too.’ Ivin is also a foodie. ‘I love cooking and eating out, travelling and going to the cinema. When I am back in Malaysia, I enjoy spending time with family and friends - it is something I really treasure.’ ‘At The Orthodontic Clinic, we’re all about the best standard of care, expertise and service.
