ouse plants and other greenery have been popular since the first ever Christmas tree originated in the 1860s, according to History.com. Since then, we as decorators have evolved into using flowers, ficuses and even small trees in our spaces. Today, the most popular trend in house plant decoration is low maintenance, super versatile and even has multiple health benefits. Succulents are extremely resilient, so they are perfect for those with cursed green thumbs. With finals just around the corner, most of us college students will take any advice we can get that will help us to focus and do well. According to Redonline.com, there have been multiple studies that show students’ brain capacity, concentration and attentiveness are increased when they are studying with a plant in the room. And you don’t have to worry about having a succulent take up too much desk space since they are a small potted plant.. Another benefit that succulents bring to a living space is their ability to prevent disease. As students, we definitely do not want to worry about getting sick or missing class. Succulents release moisture into the air of your space, which can prevent dry skin, sore throats, colds and dry cough. According to the Agriculture University of Norway, there was a 60 percent disease decrease in offices that had plants within the building.

One of the best ways to display a succulent, other than in a pot, is to make a tabletop terrarium. These are super easy to make yourself and all the materials can be bought on a college student budget. First, find a of glass jar of your taste. You can choose any size or shape that works with the rest of your decor. Next, place a layer of pebbles or some kind of rock at the bottom of the jar. This layer should be a few inches thick, but may depend on the size of your jar. Then, add an inch of moss on top of the rocks, and a layer of soil on top of the moss. The final step is to secure your succulent buds into the soil. Then voila, you have your succulent terrarium. This can be placed on a desk, table, shelf or any other solid space that you think needs some sprucing up. Succulents are not only aesthetically pleasing, they are also very beneficial to a person’s health. They are very inexpensive to make and are small enough to fit in with any space. A succulent can be placed in a small pot to portray a more minimalistic decor, or they can be built into terrariums to add more of an affect. No matter how you decide to use a succulent, you will reap benefits that you may have not even known you needed.

J-beauty

t’s hard to navigate the beauty world without running into Korean beauty products, which make up a multi-step skin care regime known widely as K-Beauty. Since the introduction of beauty staples such as BB cream, K-Beauty has established itself as a huge player in the global beauty industry. However, another country is fighting their way into the mainstream, enter, J-Beauty. The skincare products and routines from Japan are starting to filter their way back into the global scene now that the country’s economy is growing, and they have their own simple, philosophical niche to add to the beauty world. While K-Beauty is known for its extensive 10-step plan and products with seemingly odd ingredients (i.e. snail-gel moisturizer), Japanese beauty is known for easiness and methodical steps. According to Victoria Buchanan, a researcher from The Future Laboratory, classic aesthetic principles such as kanso (simplicity), shibui (understated beauty) and seijaku (energized calm) are the themes being carried by J-Beauty into the Western world. Techniques such as massage are important to the routine, and are predicted to become increasingly prevalent in more facial routines. Japan, like South Korea, has a rich history of skin care and cosmetics innovation. Oil cleansing has been a staple in the country since the 60s, and the people do a lot of work with local ingredients that have been used for centuries, like loquat leaf and white jelly mushroom. According to Cosmetics Business, the various cosmetics companies have slowly been expanding their products into the West, starting in Italy five years ago, and now moving into France, Spain, the UK

and America. The leap in popularity has been especially helped by one brand – Decorté, by starting a partnership with supermodel Kate Moss. Another aspect that has really influenced the gain in popularity is J-Beauty’s marketing stance of uncomplicated beauty. The various companies focus solely on the quality of the products they are selling. Masanori Kobayashi, managing director of Decorté, explained in an interview that skin condition is the primary interest of the brands, and they work to sell products with lasting results instead of temporary overnight ones. So, what really is J-Beauty? Narrowing it down to one defining product is hard to do, as the philosophy of simplicity is what always seems to be the stand-out factor in J-Beauty. It’s the quiet sister of K-Beauty, with brands such as Sensai, Seqqu and Shiseido focusing on tradition as well as innovation. Founders of brands tout the importance of taking care of the skin and natural beauty. Anna-Marie Solowij, a co-founder of BeautyMart, explained to Vogue that J-Beauty encompasses the innovation and natural products that make Asian beauty so successful, but without the “razzmatazz” of other popular routines. The simple theme behind the philosophy of working for better skin stands out in a world where marketing is always accentuating the shocking and the dazzling. J-Beauty companies are expected to bring in $2.75 billion in international revenue in the upcoming year, and are only expected to continue to expand. This success shows that it’s time to let another major player into the mainstream beauty world, and J-Beauty’s simplicity seems to be fitting right in.

othing is growing faster in fashion than athleisure-wear. These simple, casual looks are having a moment. Although the origin of workout clothes is a disheveled look only meant to sweat in, being sporty doesn’t have to look careless. If done successfully, fyou can create outfits that you can lift as well as go out to brunch in. The Colors

Colors can be an issue when putting a look together. Some initial thoughts you may have include, “This gray doesn’t match that one, and now this is a ‘groutfit’ mess.”, however, matching colors is the easiest way to style an outfit. You can’t go wrong with black, white and gray. They always look sharp, clean and fresh. Going beyond the neutrals, a bright accent color can be easily added to an outfit through a shirt, hat or shoes. If you do decide to add an intense color, however, it should be paired with neutrals to ensure the outfit doesn’t get too busy. If you desire a more colorful palette, darker colors like navy with army green or maroon can work in subtle ways. They add an interesting element like an accent color would, but require more coordination if used together. Color can also be utilized in monochromatic ways. An all black outfit is classic, while all white is bold. Variations of the same color, like blue, can work together in a shirt and jacket combo, but not for a whole outfit. The Pairings

Matching all the items in an outfit takes a little more than knowing the rainbow. For instance, too many large logos in one ensemble looks

cluttered. Keep the sizable logo to one item in the outfit. Another pairing rule is to only have one baggy item. If your sweatshirt is oversized, then the pants need to have a little more fit to them in order to provide a put-together look. When it’s cold out, layering with an unbuttoned flannel over a hoodie works well. It gives some pattern and color to the look in a laid-back way. Another way to layer is with a bomber or jean jacket. These jackets give an easygoing look more formality without looking out of place. The Shoes

The power of shoes is underestimated. A whole outfit can be changed with a quick switch of kicks. Shoes are most utilitarian when they contain one or two neutral colors. These kind of shoes match all outfits without causing a distraction. An accent color or several bright colors are easy to incorporate with shoes, as well as add a certain uniqueness to an ensemble. Shoes can take on several different purposes in someone’s overall style. They can be strictly athletic or skater-like, low-rise or high-rise. If a preppier look is desired, Converse go well with a denim jacket over sporty clothes. If a skater-look is wanted, Vans and a flannel are the go to. An entire style can be determined with shoes alone. In athleisure-wear, you can be ready for anything thrown at you – metaphorically and physically, because of its versatility. Colors are key. Pairings have a few rules. Shoes are power. In the end, you’ll be comfy as well as stylish.

s the weather gets hotter, your shoe game can too. Making a bold statement with your footwear can be easily mastered this spring with current trends and opportunities for experimentation. Whether you’re a maximist or a minimalist, these bold shoe trends are easy to incorporate into any style, look or occassion. Say goodbye to boring, basic sneakers. If tennis shoes are your go-to footwear, liven them up and make a bold statement by incorporating ombre effect tennis shoes or chunky sneakers into your wardrobe. These footwear trends have recently been seen at Paris Fashion Week, and are sold by brands such as Nike and Converse. They can be worn for athletic purposes or every day to bring life to your outfits. Sneakers that include vivid pops of color, such as bright yellow or multicolored stripes, will not fail to make you stand out. Fake exotic skin shoes will also liven up any outfit. Shoes or boots with animal skin never go out of style and look great with almost anything. Pair them with denim jeans and a basic t-shirt for a casual, trendy look. These designs are unique and eyecatching. Plus, who doesn’t gain confidence while wearing a pair of snakeskin loafers or crocodile boots? If you are feeling brave, seek out skins in unexpected colors, such as a purple, red or even blue to enhance the boldness of the print.

Warmer weather calls for sandals and open-toed shoes. If you want to step outside of the box, allow yourself to invest in a pair of the strappiest sandals. This bold statement has been seen on the runway this spring by top designers. Styles such as outdoorsy velcro sandals and fisherman sandals were a few of the many popular styles on the recent runways. Fisherman sandals are perfect style for transitional weather and were seen made in a leather style by Prada. Outdoorsy velcro sandals were featured in Paul Smith’s and Louis Vuitton’s spring 2018 men’s collections. With the many options and varieties of strappy sandals, it’s easy to choose a style that best suits you and your fashion interests. This spring, mules are receiving a trendy upgrade. Ditch your plain, basic mules for a collapsible pair. These statement shoes go perfectly with any outfit and can be dressed up or down. And the best part? They are easy to slip on and store away. Recently, Wiz Khalifa was seen sporting a pair of black, fur lined collapsed Gucci mules. However, you don’t have to break the bank to own a pair. Santimon offers a similar leather pair at a fraction of the cost. A great pair of shoes can pull together any outfit and change the way you feel about your day. Make a bold statement this spring and try out new footwear – all eyes will be on you, in the best way.

hen thinking of glitter, festival makeup may pop into mind; but it is 2018 and it can be rocked into an everyday look. Begin by applying any eye primer to where the glitter will be. If primer is not available, foundation or concealer will do the trick. Let it dry for roughly 10-15 seconds before applying the glitter using a fluffy eyeshadow brush. For bigger chunks of glitter that may not stay attached to the brush, it can also be applied by dipping your fingers into the eyeshadow then gently patting it down. After applying eyeshadow, use a complimentary glitter along the lash line as an eyeliner to help make the eyes pop. Not a fan of eyeliner? Try putting some glitter on the inner and outer corners of the eyelid. This can add a shadow effect and help pull a look together. Want to go all out? Apply the glitter on the full eyelid and across the upper cheek bones. Moving to your cheeks, replace any highlighter with glitter! This can be a soft and subtle glow to heavy, chunky sparkles. Lips are a fun-yet tricky way to incorporate glitter into a look. Begin with

hydrating the lips with oil or chapstick, followed by lipstick or gloss. Wait about 15 seconds for the lips to set, then apply glitter. I have found it is easier to apply with a small concealer brush so it is more accurate and you do not end up with glitter falling off. To finish off the look, dab a finger in chapstick then lightly pat the lips to hold the glitter in place. There are no rules when it comes to where glitter should be, so have fun with it! If a mistake occurs, try incorporating it into the look. The higher a point is on the face, the better suited it is for glitter. Putting glitter in a low part of the face will not hit the light correctly and may distort the look. Glitter isn’t for everyone, so another option is using small gemstones! A gemstone centered below the eye is a small way to enhance a look without it taking over your face. Other places to try gems are at the end of winged eyeliner, centered above the top lip, or any other high points on an individual’s face. Just like glitter, putting a gem on a low part of the face may distract and distort the overall look one may try to achieve.

ga to de-stress

T

o say the least – finals week is hectic. However, there is no need to let the stress that stems from finals consume your life. Take a step away from the study sessions and let your body relax and rejuvenate itself by practicing yoga. Yoga is not only a form of relaxation for your body; it has the capabilities to relax your mind. By definition, it is a practice that combines controlled breathing, relaxation, physical poses and sometimes meditation. According to the Mayo Clinic, yoga can help reduce stress, lower your heart rate, improve flexibility, promote strength and help with chronic conditions such as pain or depression. It’s an all-in-one wellness activity, and almost anyone can do it. Prevent school stress from taking over your body and mind by practicing these five poses known to relieve tension and slow breathing. Cat-Cow stretch (Chakravakasana) According to Hum Nutrition, this stretch gently massages the spine to relieve tension in the upper body and soften stress residing in the shoulders and back. How to do it: Start on your hands and knees and find a neutral flat back. You should position your hips to be just over your knees, and your hands just under your shoulders. Point your fingertips to the top of your mat and center your head in a neutral position. Move into cow pose by inhaling, dropping your belly towards the mat, lifting your chin and chest and gazing upwards toward the ceiling. Move in to cat pose on your exhale by drawing your belly in towards your spine, rounding your back toward the ceiling and releasing the crown of your head to the floor. Continue moving between poses on inhales and exhales. Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana) This pose will strengthen and open the upper body and chest, as well as improve posture and digestion. It is said to rejuvenate the body, providing relief from fatigue and mild depression. How to do it: Start by lying face-down on the floor with your legs extended behind you, spread a few inches apart. The tops of your feet should rest on the mat. Place your hands on the floor next to your lower rib cage with fingers pointing towards the top of the mat. Hug your elbows in toward your rib cage.

On an inhale, press your hands firmly into the floor, straighten your arms and lift your torso and legs a few inches off the floor. Press down firmly through the tops of your feet and engage leg muscles to keep your thighs lifted off the floor. Downward-facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) This pose will warm and stretch the entire body. It is known to calm the mind while increasing energy and blood flow. How to do it: Begin on your hands and knees with shoulders directly under your hips and fingers pointed to the top of your mat. Spread your fingers wide and press firmly through your palm and knuckles. Exhale as you tuck your toes under and lift your knees off the floor. Reach your pelvis up toward the ceiling and begin to straighten your legs. Your body should be in the shape of an A. Press the floor away from you as you lift through your pelvis and lengthen your spine. Warrior I (Virabhadrasana) Some of the benefits this pose offers your body are energy, strength, focus and stability. How to do it: Start standing with your feet hip-distance apart, and turn to face the left. On an exhale, step your feet wide, about four to five feet apart. Make sure your right foot is facing the front of the mat, and your left foot should be pivoted inwards at a 45-degree angle. Align your front heel with the arch of your back foot, keeping your pelvis turned toward the front of your mat. Your right (front) leg should be bent, with your shin perpendicular to the floor, which the left (back) leg is straight. Reach up strongly to the ceiling, lengthen the sides of your waist and lift through your chest. Child's Pose (Balasana) This relaxing pose helps to stretch hips and thighs while reducing stress and fatigue by centering, calming and soothing the brain. How to do it: While sitting on your knees, spread them wide apart while keeping your big toes touching. If you have tight hips or this is uncomfortable for you, knees can be kept together. On an exhale, bow forward, draping your torso between your thighs. Your heart and chest should rest on or between your thighs, depending on knee placement, and your forehead should come to the mat. Extend your arms out in front of you, keeping your palms flat on the mat.

ny fashion fanatic will agree that The Devil Wears Prada is a well-loved classic. The character Miranda Priestly, who is based on the original lady boss Anna Wintour, is a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention, she is a huge fashion icon and inspiration for women in every industry who are fighting for a place at the top. Have you ever wondered what goes into becoming a lady boss? Reaching Miranda Priestly and Anna Wintour status starts with your clothes. Because, in the words of Miuccia Prada, “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world.” This means that you must make every outfit count when planning what to wear for those summer internships. You don’t want to ruin an amazing opportunity with a poor outfit choice. Dress to express your confidence: A tip coined from the great Anna Wintour: Even if you don’t feel confident in your task, dress as though you were born to complete it, and people will believe that you were. Once confidence becomes prominent on the outside, it is only a matter of time before those threads of confidence weave into your self-esteem, and therefore into your work. If you believe in your ability to succeed, so will the world. Style expert Bridgette Raes shares on her website, bridgetteraes. com, that an easy way to appear confident and powerful on the outside is by adding shoulder pads to your ensemble. A classic, professional look can be easily achieved by adding a blazer with shoulder pads to your work wardrobe. This can be a plain and simple piece in one solid color if that is what your job or internship requires, or it can have a fun pattern or be in a bright color to add attitude and individuality to the outfit. A large part of moving up in any industry is finding ways to make yourself stand out. With a look like this, you will be noticed by how you express yourself on the outside, which serves as a gateway to the ideas you have to offer on the inside. As Anna Wintour kindly shares, “If you can’t be better than your competition, just dress better.” Even if you aren’t the intern with the most experience, adding shoulder pads and an aura of confidence to your personal style will ensure that you don’t get overlooked. Avoid Representing the Stereotypes: It is well known that there are many stereotypes regarding the dress of young females in the workplace. In some TV shows such as, female professionals are portrayed in tight mini-skirts, exposing blouses and unfavorably high heels; this is not a look to aspire for. How you dress directly translates to whether or not you will be taken seriously. If you wish to come off as professional, organized and all of those other dazzling qualities that your company is searching for, try these tips instead. Let’s get one thing straight: dressing like a lady boss does not have to mean dressing like a man. Continue to embrace

your femininity in a confident and strategically beneficial fashion. Pencil skirts may bring up images of conservative sales associates in the shoe department, but they have been reborn for a younger generation of up-and-coming job seekers. Now-a-days, pencil skirts can be found mostly anywhere, for any season, at any price. They can be found at your favorite stylishly affordable stores such as Forever 21. Pairing a neutral-colored pencil skirt with a work-appropriate shirt such as a button down or blouse layered with a blazer screams professional authenticity. If your internship permits a wider range of self-expression via your day-to-day outfits, try adding a statement pair of shoes such as strappy leather sandals or a colorful velvet bootie for originality from head-to-toe. Get Creative: Liven up the original pant suit by venturing into the world of jumpsuits. A classy, neutral colored jumpsuit is a youthful and trendy take on the traditional power suit. For example, take a gray spaghetti strap jumpsuit and layer over it a navy blue, unstructured blazer with pinstripes or shoulder pads. Finish off the look by accessorizing with nude heels or your favorite work flats if your internship requires lots of running around, as most do, and sparkly earrings – just for fun. Dress like the person you want to be: An important aspect of reaching lady boss status is to appear calm, organized and capable at all times. You want to look prepared to handle any task with class and ease. To ensure that these qualities are expressed through your outfit, you must plan ahead the night before. Allow yourself a decent amount of time – 20 or 30 minutes before bed – to craft a well-thought out ensemble. Don’t show up disheveled. This will make all the difference in the morning when you can use those extra minutes to perfect your hair or make a deliciously-necessary coffee. No matter how tough your days may get, try and channel Emily Blunt’s superficial character who serves as a reluctant co-worker to Anne Hathaway’s character, Emily and her enthusiasm towards her job in The Devil Wears Prada. Repeat to yourself, “I love my job, I love my job, I love my job.” Even if on the inside you are nothing but a couture catastrophe, if you remain calm, collected and well-dressed on the outside, the world will accept you as such. Above all, remember the wise words of American costume designer Edith Head, “You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.” In the words of Miranda Priestly, “That’s all.”

winter t

o spring

I

t’s that time of year again – when stores release their spring lines full of bright colors and breezy fabric. While it’s tempting to hit up all of the spring sales, your wallet is in opposition. The good news is that you can still create a new spring wardrobe without spending the rest of your holiday money! Carry some of your favorite winter pieces into spring with these cute looks, so you can stay stylish and on-budget. Over-the-knee boots

They kept your feet and legs warm in the winter and looked great with skinny jeans, but just because it’s getting warmer doesn’t mean they have to get locked away until next year. Spring weather can be all over the place, and some days just aren’t warm enough for sandals or open-toed shoes. Spring-ify your boots by pairing them with a flowery dress. They’ll keep your legs warm, and the peek of skin between the hem of the dress and the top of the boots will feel flirty and ready for spring. Sweaters

Your favorite cozy sweater isn’t done for the year yet –it can make an easy alternative to a light coat. Pull it over a dress or wear it with a skirt for some extra warmth on breezy days. Avoid clashing colors and patterns by choosing a neutral colored sweater. This will also make a light-colored dress or skirt with polka-dots or flowers pop more.

Wool Coats

You may be tempted to ditch your heavier coats and move on to cardigans. However, you know it’s likely that as soon as you put the coats away the temperatures will drop again. Our moms have warned us time and time again of this cruel spring irony. Use it to your advantage and turn your jacket into the statement piece of the outfit. Pair a blazer or trench coat with a loose lace-trimmed camisole and jeans. The heavier material of the coat will perfectly compliment the delicate material of the camisole and balance out your outfit. It will also give you a chance to start wearing some of your lighter spring tops without feeling too exposed. Jeans

As much as the onset of warmer weather makes you want to pull out dresses and denim cutoffs, don’t forget about your trusty jeans. They’re so easy to pair with other clothing items that they’re often overlooked in terms of style. To bring some brightness back into your wardrobe, distressed light-wash denim is the perfect goto. White jeans also make their comeback during spring. Roll up the ankles and show off some mules, another popular spring trend.

barron

R

eed Barron is the first male editorin-chief to serve Trend in almost a decade. After falling in love with the publication, he says moving up to lead the organization felt like the next step. It is the first time in Trend history that three people have been given the title and responsibility of running the magazine. Barron has had a quick rise to the top with his Trend career, going from model to director to editor-in-chief. His success can be credited to his analytical mind and caring personality. “I feel that I’m very genuine and care for the people that I work with and am around,” Barron said. “I’m capable of both leading and building relationships.” The apparel program at Iowa State is predominantly comprised of women, and Barron says he hopes to be an inspiration to other men in the program that feel overshadowed. He says he believes it’s important to remind the men in his major that they can make it up to top positions if they have the determination. “I think the biggest thing I’ve done is to show the magazine and Iowa State’s population that this major and industry needs equal involvement,” said Barron. As far as trends go in general, Barron says he’s never been into following them.

“It’s funny because I work for a magazine called Trend,” said Barron.“I’ve just always stuck with what I like – timeless, classic menswear pieces.” Barron’s style icon is G-Eazy. He says he always finds himself gravitating toward a quality pair of jeans or boots with a nice jacket on top. He’s always been a big fan of Yves Saint Laurent – from the iconic Chelsea boot to their floral shirts, he’s into it all. The biggest piece of advice from Barron to new Trend members or those hopeful to make it into his current role is that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. “It’s a common answer but it’s true,” said Barron. “If you want to pursue something, then you have to go after it.” He noted that he was at a disadvantage when applying for the position, given he would only be able to serve one semester as EIC, but that didn’t stop him from interviewing. The role has been a sweet taste of what Barron’s future holds postgraduation. He says he’s much more open to exploring work within a publication and hopes to make it to an executive position within a company.
