DATE WEAR 101 There are numerous little anxieties that come along with going on a date, with the struggle of figuring out what you want to wear being a main culprit. To relieve some of the build up, here is an outline on what’s appropriate to wear for your crush broken down into four college-friendly locations.
The Movies You might think that an outfit doesn’t matter on a movie date, considering practically the whole thing takes place in the dark. But in reality, the time spent outside of the cave that is the movie theater while flirting over who pays for the popcorn is where you win their heart. This casual, easygoing location does not require a lot of effort, but sweatpants may be a little too easygoing. A simple graphic T-shirt, an oversized cardigan, slip-on shoes and ripped jeans allow your style to show through without making it seem like you are trying too hard. The cardigan can also come in handy when you need something to shield your eyes, hopefully also while your date is protecting you (or hiding themselves), from the horrors on screen during a scary flick.
The Coffee Shop The coffee shop is an informal, yet intimate place to go on a date. It allows you to get to know someone, while also getting to sip on a delicious hot or iced drink. Let your outfit and coffee play off of each other by wearing a rich, neutral hue. Blacks, whites, tans, army green and gray are all colors to keep in mind when selecting your perfect outfit. An army jacket paired with a plain undershirt and neutral scarf make you look approachable while still staying fashion forward. Boyfriend jeans (nothing has to be official to wear these pants!), adds to this relaxed look without being underwhelming.
2
The Ice Rink Having the wonderful privilege of living in a state where it snows and temperatures can dip below freezing for a good portion of the year, one needs to make the best of the worst. An ice skating date is original, unique and allows you to get out and get moving. Dressing cute is challenging and can even be overlooked in winter weather, but it’s possible to still look nice and stay away from the shivering cold. A bold headband can add a splash of color to your winter coat and has the added bonus of keeping you warm, so you don’t have to worry about
that while you’re out there trying to maintain your balance. Having matching mittens continues to add a cute and comfy feel to the outfit– plus if you end up holding hands, your date won’t notice if they’re a little clammy under that soft material. Wearing jeans allows you to maintain some style and add extra protection that leggings can’t match if you fall on the ice. A coat is an essential on an outdoors date like this one, but wearing a simple sweater underneath continues to add warmth and creates yet another fashion statement.
The Romantic Dinner Whether you are a new couple or you started dating in middle school, everyone loves the idea of being with their significant other in an intimate location, along with everyone’s favorite thing: food. A sit-down dinner in a cozy restaurant allows privacy within a public space. Since this is a more personal and formal date, you might want to stay away from jeans and your favorite band tee. For this event, the classic little black dress is a sexy, go-to piece that speaks for itself. A simple silver or gold necklace with diamond earrings allows you to look simply beautiful without being over the top with bling. If wearing a dress is out of your comfort zone, have no fear. A nice pair of black slacks and a lace blouse can create the same effortless, romantic look. A pop of color in the heel also showcases your fun side within this traditional outfit.

GRUNGE VS. HOMELESS
BY: RACHEL CESSNA
Have you ever tried the grunge look, but ended up looking like you just rolled out of bed? The grunge look has been popular for decades and can be seen all over stores and the media. The bold, deep colors and comfortable materials are fashionable, yet effortless. However, you don’t want to cross the line between looking grunge and looking like you just pulled your outfit out of a dumpster. Before going any further, it’s important to note exactly what “grunge” is. Basically, it involves wearing clothing that is more relaxed and low-key than the popular, preppy and high fashion trends. Often, people attempting the style go for dark colors, and they aren’t afraid of a few holes in their jeans and tops. A common grunge look includes a flannel, black jeans and dark colored boots or sneakers such as Chelsea boots, high tops and Vans. However, those are just some basic options. To look grunge, you don’t have to stick to a certain mold. You’re free to wear a multitude of items that you don’t have to get from Ralph Lauren– from a hoodie to a jean jacket to a graphic tee. Accessories such as knit beanies, classic wristwatches or even worn-down baseball caps effortlessly add to the look as well. Alright guys, grunge isn’t just any oversized, holey piece of clothing. If you aren’t sure what you’re doing, you can end up looking borderline trashy. Jeans with holes in them are a big part of the
4
style, but if they are too large, sloppy or numerous, your jeans may look as if you just got back from exploring the wilderness. The same thing applies to distressed tees. If it looks like your shirt’s gone through a shredder, then you’re missing the mark. Keeping holes clean and minimal works best. While oversized clothing can add to the grunge look, it also may be the reason it looks sloppy. Wearing jeans that are so baggy they could fall down any second, or a flannel a few sizes too big can ruin the outfit and end up looking like a not-so-hot mess. You can keep it loose, but try not to wear clothes so large you look like you’re drowning in them.
The best part about dressing grunge: the price. Sure, you can buy designer jeans and a $75 flannel from Patagonia, but do you have to in order to look stylish? Definitely not. Grunge doesn’t have to look expensive or highly fashionable. You should wear what you feel comfortable in and what you can afford. Flannels and distressed tees can even be found at thrift stores such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army. If you look in your closet, you can probably already find the items needed to fit the style. Sorry guys, you no longer have the excuse of looking frumpy when you could be looking fashionable. Grunge is such a creative style to wear because of the edgy yet comfortable aspects it includes. The abundance of shades and designs makes your look unique. The most important tip to remember is to not overthink it, and just wear what feels right for you.

HOW TO BE A GOOD HOST
BY: MEGAN DALE
The kinds of parties we host as college kids tend to be quite different than those hosted by our parents and grandparents. I mean, as far as I know my grandma isn’t having fifteen girls over to her house to watch the Bachelor. But no matter what the occasion there are a few cardinal rules to having guests over that apply to both the fanciest and most casual of parties. Here are some guidelines to being a hostess with the mostest:
Clean Your Home There’s nothing worse than having people over when your place is a mess. Leaving dishes in the sink and clothes on the floor is not something an expert host such as yourself would do, and if you invited people over you made the commitment to make sure it isn’t a disaster. Break out the vacuum and the swiffer, and make your place shine. And don’t forget the bathroom! Your guests will appreciate it more than you know.
Enough Seating If you’re planning to have a sit-down meal or watch a movie, it’s crucial to make sure you provide enough seating for the amount of people you’re having over– even if you have to move your lounge chair out of your bedroom to your main area. To go a step further, make sure that everyone has a seat before you do. If someone has to stand or sit on the floor, let it be you before it’s anyone else.
6
Decorations If you’re hosting a party that’s for a seasonal event or holiday, decorate your space to show it! A go-to place to find cheap decorations for every occasion is the dollar section at Target (usually located at the front of the store). There are tons of unique and cheap items to spice up your place. This will evoke many compliments from your guests, while also getting them in the spirit for whatever it is you’re celebrating!
Food If you’re providing food at a get-together, make sure it is ready when the guests arrive. The first few minutes of a party are always a little bit awkward, so usually people get through this by eating! When the first guest arrives, make sure you advise them to grab a plate while you wait for everyone else. Also, make sure that the food is at the right temperature. No one wants melted ice cream or a cold hamburger, so be certain to keep the food you’re serving at an appropriate temperature until being served!
Comfort The most important thing to provide your guests with is a comfortable environment. Make sure all of your guests know each other and don’t be afraid to take charge and introduce people! Shonna Gainey, a sophomore in event management says, “The key to being a great host is to make your guests feel welcome and that their company is appreciated.” She also insists that making everyone feel comfortable means that everyone will leave the party happy, and what more could anyone want than that? Being a good host doesn’t depend on how much money you have to throw into expensive decor or how lush and lavish your home is. It simply depends on the effort you put into making sure your guests have a night they won’t forget! And remember, practice makes perfect. Take all of these tips, and go plan your next party.

FULL LIPS WITHOUT FILTERS
BY: JADE MART
Full lips are officially on trend thanks to celebrities like Kylie Jenner, whose infamous mouth has given a whole new definition to a full pout. Most of us aren’t born with lips that voluptuous or have the means to get them artificially brought to that level by a professional, but don’t be discouraged if the size of your lips doesn’t quite match Jenner’s. Here are some tips and tricks to create the illusion of that sought after fullness.
Lip liner: When it comes to making your lips appear larger than they are, lip liner is your new best friend. Multiple celebrities including Kylie Jenner and Jessie James Decker rave about this being their favorite beauty hack. The secret is to use it to slightly over line your lips by drawing right outside the actual outline of your mouth before applying a lipstick or gloss line your lips to create natural-looking fullness. Stick to nude or pink shades for the best results, these colors blend the most naturally.
Mint: Instead of getting chemical fillers or injections, mimic the effects of these methods with the more natural technique of simply applying a minty balm. Doing so increases blood flow to the lips which in turn plumps them up, making this method a cost friendly dupe to paying hundreds of dollars for an augmentation.
8
Contour: It turns out that contouring doesn't have to be used just to sculpt your face, but also your lips. There are several ways to do this, but the most common is to line your lips emphasizing the cupids bow and the corners of your mouth. Next divide your bottom lip into three sections by drawing one line in the middle and another on each side about a quarter inch out. Just like with your face, this helps to create shadow that enhances your pout.
Lip Gloss: This trick is simple. Lip gloss reflects light and creates the illusion of added volume. Try some
nude shades for the best results. Beauty blogger Jaclyn Hill’s favorite is Enamored Hi-Shine Gloss Lip by Marc Jacobs, but any brand or product will do. Grab your favorite gloss and your lips are sure to be “poppin”.
Lip Plumper: The notorious lip plumper is definitely a recognizable and highly talked about option. The science behind these magical sticks is the ingredients in them– the formula is created to slightly irritate your lips and cause them to swell. This is also reason your mouth feels tingly when using this product. Cosmopolitan recommends the Grandelips Hydrating Plumper, or for a cheaper option you can go with the Duwop Original Lip Venom.
Masks: Lip masks are currently all the rave. Essentially, these masks (which can be made of collagen, shea butter, and more) deep condition your lips and leave them flake free and moisturized. On top of your newly soft lips they will be plumped as well– the scrubbing you do to apply the mask creates blood flow. Don’t just stick with masks made for your face, your lips need some love too. You now have the guide to the perfect pout! Try a couple (or all) of these tips to find which one accentuates your lips the best. After all, they are one of a girl's best accessories. 9
LOCK DOWN YOUR MAKEUp
BY: TORI holthaus
With Valentine’s day right around the corner, it’s very possible you’re thinking about the perfect makeup for that special activity with your significant other or friend. One thing’s for sure– from a soft smokey eye to a sexy scarlet lip, you want to make sure your look stays on throughout the night. Nothing ruins a Valentine’s Day goodnight kiss like a makeup meltdown. Here are a few tips for makeup looks that will last. Since foundation is the base to your entire makeup look, you want to make sure it goes on smoothly. Create a flawless canvas with a face primer that fits your skin type. If you have oily skin or are more into the matte look, consider using mattifying primer. This will prevent your skin from becoming shiny throughout the night. For a dewy look or fix for dry skin, find a primer that specializes in hydrating or illuminating.
Additionally, eyeshadow primer is a major key to helping any eye look stay in place. It will create a base for your pigments to cling to, while getting rid of any redness or discoloration on the eyelids. Primers come in all types of formulas and shades, so finding one that best suits your lid type is a great investment. A sheer base will go with any look, while a whiter pigment will make the shadows more vibrant. If your significant other is gazing romantically into your eyes, you probably don’t want them to see smudged eyeliner. A little concoction that can help with this problem is pencil liner and gel. Dip the pencil into the gel liner and apply it to your waterline. You can set your line by using an angled eyeshadow brush with a matching eyeshadow color to further increase staying power, though it isn’t necessary. This technique works for any shade, from pitch black to an electric blue.
10
Wherever your Valentine’s Day plans take you, waterproof mascara won’t let you down. The formula prevents the pigment from melting in the humid air, or smudging during a sob-fest of “Sleepless in Seattle”. Its long lasting wear will stick around all day long– no touch ups necessary. To have a lip look that can survive past dinner, consider using a liquid lipstick. This formula typically goes on like a lipgloss, but sets with a matte finish. A bunch of makeup companies, such as Kylie Cosmetics, recently came out with an abundance of products to go with this trend, so finding the right shade for your look should be a breeze. Once you’ve completed your entire look, try a setting spray to finish it off. This product can be a real life-saver for any skin type. Some sprays can even last up to 16 hours and keep you feeling refreshed on humid days. Simply spritz the mist onto your face from about six inches away, and let it dry.

VERsatility piece The time of the year we all hate: surrendering our cute summer clothes to storage and bringing out the winter rags. While doing this is definitely not the kind of task you get excited for, there is a way to wear summer clothes in winter, while also staying warm and cozy. Why waste your money on “seasonal trends” when you can make do with the clothes you already have? All it takes is a little creativity– and reading this article won’t hurt either.
Oversized Denim Jacket An oversized denim jacket is a must-have for all four seasons. It's effortless and fashionable, which is the best pair if you’re on the go. For the hot summertime, pair it with colored shorts, a white tee, statement necklace and of course, sneakers. When the leaves start to make their way down from the trees, there is no need to declare the jacket out of style. Rock the denim with a cropped sweater and high-waisted jeans, tying your favorite flannel around your waist and adding a beanie with some boots for a “model off duty” look. The winter can be a tricky time for a denim jacket, but remember, layering is key. To style in the colder months, layer it with an oversized sweater and blanket scarf, paired with jeans and boots. In the springtime, style it up with white jeans, a nude tank and some booties for a new, refreshing look to go along with the season.
T-Shirt Dress Don't throw out that T-shirt dress out just yet! Revamp your outfit by pairing your favorite one with knee high socks and a jacket to keep you cozy on a chilly, fall day. When Jack Frost comes to town, don't let him scare this adorable piece away. Another way to wear this look is to pair the dress with tights, booties and a long cozy cardigan. When the warmer seasons roll around, break out a flannel and your most fashionable kicks to complete the outfit.
12
Suede Skirt How could we possibly give up the suede skirt to storage? Well here’s some good news: the skirt is here to stay all year round with these styling tips. In the summer, pair it with a crop top and sandals for an adorable and easily put together outfit. Transition into the fall by styling this beloved piece with black tights, booties, a long-sleeved shirt and cardigan to protect you from the chilly breeze. When animals go into hibernation for the colder months there's no need for the skirt to go as well! For a perfect winter wonderland outfit, show it off with tights, knee high boots, a sweater and a fluffy jacket. And lastly, when spring rolls around pair your skirt with a long-sleeved T-shirt, sandals and a statement necklace.
Flannel Flannels are wearable in every season and alway find their place in style. During the summer, show it off with shorts, a crop top and your favorite trusty sneakers. When the air begins to feel brisk, it’s time to start getting creative. Find your favorite jacket and layer the flannel underneath to add more fun to your outfit. In the winter, pair the it with your favorite cardigan and long-sleeved shirt for more warmth.
Booties Last but not least, we have the booties. This cute yet understated shoe can definitely be worn all year-round. Booties are easy to style and work well with pretty much any outfit. When the sun is beating down, pair your favorite neutral-colored pair with a cute babydoll dress. The best time to break out the booties are of course during the fall, so take advantage of this and get creative with your style! You can wear them with an a-line skirt, tights, crop top and a sweater. When the snow starts to fall, rock the booties with jeans, an oversized sweater and a big, cozy jacket. And finally for the season in which the flowers finally begin to bloom, pair the shoe with blue, distressed jeans and a long, flowy top to complete the perfect outfit.

DIY METALLIC CRAFT DIY seems to be on the trend in many aspects of life: from interiors to apparel to household goods. Being college students, DIY is especially appealing because it gives us something to do! It is not extremely costly, and generally results in a cheap alternative. If you have a flat surface that you are dying to spruce up, then this metallic craft is for you!
First off, you will need to gather all your old Green Day and Nickelback CDs that you embarrassingly use to listen to 90 times a day. You will also need some sort of adhesive (hot glue, E6000, or Household Goop are recommended) and a cutting device (plastic cutters are recommended, but scissors will do the trick).
To start off your metallic craft, you will need to cut the CDs into pieces of various shapes and sizes. After the CDs are cut, you will lay them out on the surface in an almost mosaic fashion.
Finally, you will adhere these pieces to your surface and voila! You have an updated surface that is cool and fun (come on, it is literally made from Green Day). Happy crafting!

DUPES Shopping for makeup can be an exhilarating moment. However, everyone knows the dreaded feeling when the total pops up on the register– even a product as small as a lip liner can have a major price tag. So you know when you find your must have high-end product for a fraction of the cost at your local CVS or Walgreens, it’s the best of both worlds. Welcome to the world of drugstore dupes.
Be on the lookout for the three major C’s when looking for a dupe in foundation: coverage, color, and consistency. Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Foundation has a primer like consistency with a full coverage finish. The same can be said for Maybelline’s Dream Matte foundation. The only difference is that you save yourself a whopping $28. Setting your foundation and concealer the correct way can be a tricky task. If the powder doesn’t suit your skin type, you can be left with an oily catastrophe. This is why Laura Mercier Translucent Powder, $47, is such a popular product in the beauty industry. It’s lightweight, non-white casting finish can also be found in Maybelline’s Master Fix setting powder for only $10. It’s super important to have your brows on fleek 24/7. This makes spending the money on items like Makeup Forever’s Pro Sculpting Brow Palette and its $42 price tag a little easier to handle. However, if you’re looking for a bargain, try Rimmel’s Brow This Way Sculpting kit for $5. A general fear with eyeliner is looking like a raccoon if it slips or slides throughout the day, which is why there is hesitation towards lowerpriced products. The low-quality ingredients could ruin an entire look. However, L.A. Girl’s Fine Line at $7 is an amazing dupe for the
everlasting, pitch-black Kat Von D eyeliner in Trooper at $19. Eyeshadow palettes which contain multiple eyeshadows in one place are better for organization and the wallet, compared to purchasing hundreds of little ones. However, some are more expensive than others. The long-loved Urban Decay Naked 3 palette has a high price attached to the high quality. If the love isn’t worth the wager, consider trying Wet N Wild’s Au Natural Nude Wakening palette for $5. While this isn’t an exact replica, its mauve tones give off the same impression. If you’re worried about the pigmentation, these shadows can be built up to the intensity you desire.
they’re used with, so investing in them can work in your favor in the long run. The Beauty Blender at $20 is a versatile tool that can apply any product smoothly. However, if you’re just getting into makeup or want a similar version for a lower price, consider the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge at just $7. Keep these dupes in mind while you’re on the lookout for a feasible favorite at your local Walmart, Target, CVS or Walgreens. However if you truly can’t live without a product, don’t be afraid to splurge a little. Finding a holy grail product takes time and effort, but when it happens it’s all worth the while.
Tools are just as important as the products 17
TINDER PROFILE UPGRRADE
BY: Rachel Cessna
Do you have a Tinder or are you considering getting one? Maybe you’re not getting many matches or you aren’t sure how to begin. Well, after consulting women who use Tinder at Iowa State, here are some dos and don’ts to help you find the perfect match—or a lot of them.
DO make you first pic only of you
DON’T lose your shirt
It’s all about you! The first pic that people see creates the first impression. Starting off with a pic of just you shows people exactly who they’re swiping on. The less confused people are, the more likely they are to swipe right.
Shirtless pics are great for the beach—not your bathroom. No matter how solid your abs are, women may see it as egotistical rather than attractive. So, put on a shirt and relax those biceps for a swipe right.
DON’T get lost in the group DO show off your pets When asked what makes them swipe right, one of the most popular things our women said was dogs. They’re often adorable and show you’re responsible for more than just yourself. So, snap a pic with your favorite pupper and get ready for endless cuddles.
People often swipe through Tinder profiles quickly. If they don’t immediately like what they see or feel confused, you’re off their screen for good. The dreaded group picture often results in an immediate left swipe. If women don’t know which person you are, they often lose interest. Save that group photo for one of your later pics so women have an idea of what you look like before they see it.
DON’T bring out the senior pics
DO hide your ride So, you own a truck...or a camaro or a smart car. No matter what type of vehicle you own, unless you’re inside or next to it, don’t put it on Tinder. Show what you look like and your personality, not so much what you own. Maybe choose a pic from a vacation instead.
You’re scrolling through your pics and come across the photos from that shoot your mom made you do your senior year of high school. Keep scrolling! You may think they look good or professional, but they’re also from the past. You probably don’t look like that anymore and nobody wants to swipe right on a high schooler.
Of course, there are always exceptions when it comes to what women like and dislike. Following these tips may be useful, but don’t forget to show off your true personality. Soon enough, the right swipes will follow.
