Overalls Being a kid consisted of getting dirt on your overalls from the sandboxes and playgrounds. Overalls aren’t meant for playing around anymore; now, they are a way to be casual yet chic while going about a daily routine. The classic look of overalls has inspired a new wave on how to wear them. The street stylings of overalls introduce new patterns and fabrics like plaid and corduroy instead of typical denim. Overalls can be worn in any setting, - try distressed overalls for a day on campus; bohemian, vintage overalls for brunch or corduroy overalls for the farmers market.

Karl Lagerfeld, on his fashion designs in 2012 in Harper’s Bazaar, said, “Improvise. Become more creative. Not because you have to, but because you want to. Evolution is the secret for the next step.”

Packing for vacation: WHAT TO BRING AND WHAT TO LEAVE BEHIND It’s finally that time of the year again - we’re past spring break and summertime is creeping closer every day. One of the most important parts of planning for a summer vacay is knowing what to wear. Overpacking brings its own problems to the table; lugging around a heavy suitcase is a nuisance and can be quite expensive. Planning ahead and packing smart is the way to go. Depending on your vacation destination, there are essential pieces to pack and items that can be left behind. Read on for Trend’s must-have packing list to be more prepared for your next trip.

1 pair of pants 1 skirt 2 pairs of shorts A handful of shirts (4-5) 1 or 2 swimsuits 2 pairs of shoes = 11-13 pieces of clothing overall

17

When traveling somewhere warm, it’s best to stick to basic pieces you can rewear and combine with other garments. For example, pack a comfortable pair of jeans or capris (depends on how warm of a place you’re traveling to), a skirt and two pairs of shorts. This will give you four pairs of pants that you can wash and pair again, as well as a more glam option for dressing up. Packing a skirt or dress pants means you won’t have to pack a dress or other bulky dress attire. Save the room for your essential pieces! With pants covered, you can now focus on shirts. With so many cute options available, it can be hard to limit what to pack. Here are two solutions to narrowing down your options:

1. Give yourself a number. Pick a number of shirts that you know will fit in your bag while leaving sufficient room for everything else. 2. Try on every option beforehand with the pants you have picked. This will help decide what options look best and what you’re most excited to wear while on vacation. The next piece is essential for a warm-weather or tropical vacation: a swimsuit. If you’ve given yourself enough room to pack multiple swimsuits, then pack away! However, limiting yourself to packing one swimsuit that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical will save you time and space in the suitcase. When deciding what shoes to bring, think stylish and comfortable. Your feet are important - make sure to take care of them while you’re traveling! Pack a pair of shoes that you know will be able to support any activities you may be doing during vacation. A good pair of sneakers are comfortable and in style. Once you have at least one pair of trustworthy shoes, feel free to bring another pair that you can wear for a more dressy occasion, as well as for all the cute pictures you’ll snap while on vacation. Pack smart and have a blast!

INCORPORATING VINTAGE INTO YOUR WARDROBE

Dad Shoes

Formerly meant for fathers or senior citizens, “dad shoes are back in style. The chunky sole and prominent white color assures that the shoe can go with any outfit. Well-known brands like FILA, Nike, Adidas and Jeffrey Campbell all sell the shoe for a hefty price. To dress up dad shoes, match them with denim jeans, a graphic tee and a bomber jacket. If you prefer to dress the shoes down, they work perfectly well with joggers and a hoodie.

Denim Jacket

These staple pieces went from being meant for laborers in the 1800s to being associated with rebellion in the 50s. This timeless classic is a must-have in any wardrobe. In 2015, Levi’s reintroduced the Trucker style of the jacket, proving that no matter how you style a denim jacket, it will always be trendy. A fun twist to put on any piece of denim is patches, pins or paint. Provocative texts, political messages and other fun designs have all made their way onto the backs of denim jackets. Iron-on or stick-on patches can decorate the sleeves and fronts of the jackets as well, and can typically be found at stores like Ragstock, Forever 21 or at online and thrift stores. Pins can be collected as a way to express your opinions and interests through your jacket. From presidential candidates to pop music figures, pins are a retro way to personalize a denim jacket.

22

Doc Martens

Famous in the 90s grunge and punk-rock era, Doc Martens are back and better than ever. Doc Martens are meant for people who “possess a proud sense of self-expression,” and “authentic characters who stand for something,” according to their website. Created unintentionally by a soldier trying to recover from a broken foot, Dr. Klaus Martens along with mechanical engineer Dr. Herbert Funk, used military supplies to create the beginning of an iconic brand of shoes. With plenty of variations and styles to choose from, Doc Martens offers everything from the classic boot to sandals, making them ideal for any outfit. Cuffed jeans and a pair of thick, wool socks can be the perfect match to any pair of Doc Marten boots. These styles not only scream “blast from the past”, but they have proven themselves to be timeless classics by making their way back to the top of the trend list time and time again. So, go raid your parents’ closets and make the most out of what they’ve most likely outgrown; then jam out to Bohemian Rhapsody or an old JoBro tune.

WAKE UP YOUR MAKEUP WITH A NEON PHASE

26

It’s 2019 and there’s no better way to start the year off than by incorporating an energizing jolt of neon into your beauty wardrobe. Neon makeup products have made their grand appearance in our Instagram feeds, runways and on A-listers attending Coachella. While there is nothing more captivating than a hot pink lip or bright blue lid, the trend has always been a tad intimidating. Nevertheless, when done correctly, neon makeup gives off a cool vibe that’s bound to turn some heads and make a statement. When it comes to eye makeup, it’s easy to become stuck in the same routine - reaching for the same eye pencil and blending the same two shades on a daily basis. But sometimes it’s important to stray from the neutrals and switch it up - especially when color is encouraged. From a subtle swipe of blue mascara to an all-over pink lid, neon beauty looks are relatively easy to create and a necessity for bold beauty lovers. Applying neon to the eyes can be a daunting task; follow the rules of complementary colors to make it easier. Generally, blue eyes pop with a neon purple accent, and green eyes look amazing with fuchsia and purple. Have brown eyes? Lucky for you, brown meshes beautifully with everything. Using a neon shadow as an eyeliner on the lid or lower lash line is a great way to get that pop of color without feeling like you went overboard. This is a great trick for those beginners who are wanting to just focus on one facial feature.

For beauty gurus and artists just starting out, try adding a show-stopping pop of yellow to the inner corners of the eyes and embrace your inner Kylie Jenner. Or channel Gigi Hadid by trying her iconic bold pink lids. The key to achieving an electric, but wearable, look is to know what is most flattering on your skin tone. If you have olive or dark skin, you can pull off bolder colors with ease - even tricky ones like orange. If you rock a more fair skin tone, stay close to blue-based pinks. And you can rock a fuchsia lip like no one’s business! Follow these guidelines starting out, but feel free to experiment as you get more comfortable with neon looks. For those stepping into the neon world for the first time, dabbing neon products into the skin to create a light-wash look is always a great place to start. Remember, makeup should be fun! Don’t be scared to experiment with color. Think of your face as a blank canvas. You have the opportunity to create your own artwork, so grab some neon and become your own Picasso.

Glitter, Glitter, Glitter.

Glitter is pushing past our childhood arts and crafts and making its way in the beauty world. While some may think this is an advanced second-grade art project, it’s easy to incorporate a disco ball sparkle to your eye look in a formal and classy way. Glitter eyeliner can be used in multiple ways, depending on what look you’re trying to achieve. It can be used as regular eyeliner, a waterline accent or as liquid eyeshadow on the lid. When looking for glitter eyeliner, search for a product that has a small, lean applicator. Having a specific applicator is vital when it comes to creating a sleek line. Adding a bit of glitter to formal look can enhance any outfit you choose for formal.

Notable Neons

Between being incredibly refreshing and an attention grabber, a pop of neon is bound to vamp up your makeup look. Seen on Kylie Jenner to Selena Gomez, this trend is bound to blow your formal date away. With all of the vibrant colors to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find something that vibes with you and your desired look. For a subtle neon touch, applying eyeliner or a colored mascara should be your new best friends. Applying a bold lip will bring the look to the next level.

BY Katherine Quimby

32

While the neon trend is fun and bold, beware; it can get a bit messy. When using bright products, make sure to incorporate an eyelid primer or setting spray into your makeup routine. By doing this, you’ve ensured your products to appear more vibrant, decrease smudging and last all day (and night) long. You don’t have to be a makeup pro to nail these hot trends. At first, these looks can feel daunting and risky, but they provide an electric look that will make anyone stand out. Try a bold makeup look at your next formal and feel all eyes on you.

POWERFUL IOWAN WOMEN BY Victoria Reyna-Rodriguez

March is Women’s History Month, which gives us 31 days to celebrate women from all over the world, including Iowa, that have been fighting for equal rights for ages. Virginia P. Bedell (1895-1975) proved that women can be powerful and impactful in the workplace without a college degree. Bedell was the first female county attorney in Iowa to obtain the role through on-thejob-training. She was also the first-ever female in the United States to sit on a parole board. She served this role for 19 years continuously and was eventually elected President of the Central States Corrections Association. As a member of Legion Auxiliary, Bedell created a program called Assigned Children to assist children of veterans who are in need. She was appointed to the first Governor’s Commission on Alcoholism and was an active leader in her church as well as politics.

42

The name Carrie Chapman Catt (18591947) might sound familiar, as Iowa State has an entire hall named in her honor. But what is she known for? Catt was born in Wisconsin but spent much of her life in Iowa where she attended Iowa State, joined Pi Beta Phi, started an all girl’s debate club and advocated for women to participate in military drills. Catt’s work took off when she joined the Iowa Women’s Suffrage Association as a lecturer and writer. She soon began working with the association on a national level and was eventually elected as president, replacing Susan B. Anthony. Catt also founded the League of Women Voters which is still active today. Thanks to Catt’s and other women’s efforts, in her lifetime she was able to see women gain the right to vote when the Nineteenth Amendment was signed into law. Iowa citizen Mabel Lee (1886-1985) was an advocate for girls’ physical education. During Lee’s time, the thought of women being s the “weaker sex” was at its peak. Women being physically active was seen as unbecoming and even inappropriate. When she was only a high school student, Lee started her own women’s basketball team, and in college she taught gymnastics to high schoolers. Lee continued to work in physical education and support young girls and women staying fit and active. She strongly valued good sportsmanship and staying healthy. These three women are inspiring not only because of their drive and passion for equality, but because they have proven that women can be leaders and game changers. 43

CREATING THE PERFECT TINDER PROFILE Online dating is everywhere nowadays. Tinder is practically a game on your phone that you can whip out and play when you have nothing better to do. Although Tinder can be a fun way to pass time, it can also be pretty intimidating. Creating a profile that you know many people will see and judge can feel overwhelming. These simple tips will help you get started on creating a great Tinder profile, or improving the one you already have. The pictures you select for your profile are crucial to consider. They are the first, and sometimes only, part of your profile that people will see. The first photo displayed is especially important for creating a good first impression.

BY Kendra Esau

No one wants to have to try and deduce which guy they are swiping on. “I can’t stand when guys only have group pictures,” said Breann Weishaar, a freshman at ISU and avid Tinder user. In order to avoid confusion, select a nice, solo picture as the first that everyone will see on your profile. This will help potential matches clearly know who they are swiping on, and make the process less confusing for everyone. Along the same lines, make sure the pictures you choose for your profile are flattering, but still offer an accurate portrayal of how you look. Although it may take some digging to find the right pictures for your profile, it’s worth it. No one wants to swipe right on your Facebook profile picture from 2012.

45

The bio that you choose to write is another important aspect of any Tinder profile. Not only is this the only chance you get to tell potential matches about yourself, it can make or break a match. Although summarizing your entire personality into a few words seems daunting, it doesn’t have to be. Jenna Veach, a freshman at ISU and Tinder user, said, “I don’t like long bios with too many details, your bio doesn’t have to be a short story.” Tinder is supposed to be light and causal, so there’s no need to say everything there is to you in your bio. This can overwhelm potential matches. Instead, consider thinking of a short, witty bio that will intrigue those who read it. The interest this generates gives people a reason to swipe right. Don’t forget about the importance of messages. While a simple “hey” or a cheesy pickup line that you quickly searched on Google for may seem like a great opener, you’ll just blend in with the crowd. Instead, consider putting in more effort to compose an original opener that will grab the attention of your match. “I like when people connect their opening message to my bio and engage [me],” Veach said. This shows that you are paying attention to the individual that you are talking to and makes your message stand out among all those that are probably copied and pasted to every match someone receives. Next time the urge to Tinder strikes, consider revitalizing your profile using these 46 tips and watch the matches come rolling in.
