SPRING BREAK: wardrobe awareness
9
by: alexis myszka Close your eyes and imagine an entire week free of homework, exams, and stress. March is finally here and with it comes our long awaited spring break. Spring Break is a fun and exciting time, and it’s easy to get caught up in thinking about all of the fun you’ll be having, but don’t forget about all of those fashionable necessities on your packing list. Knowing what to include for those cute and comfortable everyday looks will leave you looking stylish and feeling free to focus on your fabulous trip. For those lucky travelers who are venturing somewhere warm and sunny over spring break, get ready to shed the layers and embrace the sunshine. This month, ‘two’ is the magic number. If you’re looking for a chic and simple outfit to pack for your spring break get-away, start thinking in ‘two’s.’ Two-piece dresses and jumpsuits are an exceptional choice for any occasion. They’re stylish and they take away the stress of trying to pair tops and bottoms together every morning. Whether dressed up with wedges and glittering accessories or dressed down with a pair of sneakers sunnies; for a day of outdoor adventures. Pieces following this trend deserve a place at the top of your packing list. My favorite example of the two-piece trend is a matching two-piece white and grey striped crop top with high waisted shorts. The white is light and perfect for those whose trips involve warm weather destinations, while the stripes add a hint of personality. Finish off the look with a pair of trendy wedges or strappy sandals, and you’re ready to take on the day. An easy way to transition from a beach babe to your street style self and vice-versa is to layer a sundress over your adorable new bikinis or trendy one pieces. This simple wardrobe change can be achieved by adding sandals and, depending on the temperature, an open button-down shirt or cardigan. All of this can be stored away in an ever-so-essential beach tote. And even if you are traveling somewhere warm, it never hurts to pack a pair or two of jeans and/or leggings for those breezy days and cooler nights. Not everyone will be traveling to a bright and sunny beach side destination this spring break, so for those of you sticking to a place that has that seemingly never-ending winter weather, let’s take a look into your packing list. First, denim should be one of the items at the very top. Dark washed jeans are a perfect base for any cool weather get-up. Pair them with any one of those cozy sweaters that are taking over your closet, and you’re ready to face the chill. Just as we have all been wearing on campus, don’t forget to pack those cute winter accessories such as gloves, hats, scarves and if necessary, snow boots. Not only are hats essential when facing the elements outside, but they are also perfect for hiding those bad hair days while inside. Whether you’re migrating to a warmer climate or bundling up on the way to a cool destination, what you choose to wear can make or break a trip. You don’t want to spend the week stressing over a suitcase full of wrinkled, missmatched bad decisions. Do yourself a favor, and use this outfit inspiration as a guide to the perfect spring break wardrobe. Happy travels!

COLOR CORRECTING for dummies
by madison hudson When shopping for makeup, concealer can be one of the more difficult products to choose from, especially when you’re walking down the aisle and you find an overwhelming amount of tubes of green, pink, yellow and orange hues, not knowing which is used for what. The biggest misconception about color correcting concealers is that they should be put on before foundation, but that could not be further from the truth. By putting on foundation first followed by color correcting concealers, you end up using less of the product and it appears less cakey. Start by finding a skin-colored concealer that is in a shade a little bit lighter than your foundation. This product can be used under the eyes and in the t-zone to help even out the overall complexion. Green concealer is probably the most intimidating to use, and it’s important to know that a little will go a long way. It is used to clear up red marks or blemishes, and makes the skin appear more even. Unlike other color correctors, the green can be applied around what you want to cover up, not on directly on top. Use a skin-colored concealer after blending in the green to even everything out. Another color that may be found in a colored concealer kit is light purple or lavender. This shade is best used to counter yellow tones, and can add a beautiful glow to skin that may appear dull. If the skin is more yellow to begin with, consider using a purple primer to help brighten. For those with lighter skin tones, consider skipping orange-based concealer – it is best-suited for darker tones. Orange helps hide dark circles and other discolorations within the face for people with deeper-colored skin. Pink is another common colored concealer that is difficult to use properly. It can help brighten up the skin around your eyes and even out olive tones. Like the green, pink is a color that is used best in small quantities. The key to understanding a color concealer palette is having basic knowledge of the color wheel. By using this tool you can determine which complementary color will be best-suited for certain problem areas. With these helpful tips, go out and conquer the world of color correcting concealers.

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR colored eyeliner by kajsa hallberg
18
From Princess Diana’s signature blue eyeliner to the crazy looks pulled on the runways, colored eyeliner has long been a go-to for makeup artists to really make the eyes pop. And Wwith spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to add some fun color to your makeup collection! The right color not only stands alone for an easy, one-step eye look, but will also make your eye color stand out and shine. Choosing an eyeliner color involves many factors depending on the effect an indvidualyou wants to have. For a statement look, black will always be a staple and compliments most eye makeup, however white is an equally forgiving color to play with. Makeup artist Michael Ashton, calls white eyeliner the secret weapon of every makeup artist. He says using it on the waterline makes the eyes more open, and bright, and replacing your normal black cat eye with white will make theyour lashes appear fuller. Willow Smith has also brought the bright look back into popularity during her appearance at Dior’s most recent Spring/ Summer Haute Couture show. Eye color is also another factor you can emphasize with colored eyeliner. In many respects, the color wheel is very helpful for choosing the right color for your eyes as it identifies the colors opposite each other. Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, strongly recommends copper and gold liners for blue eyes, as well as warm metallics to brighten the eyes. Colors with red undertones, such as garnet and bronze really help green eyes pop, however Tilbury recommends lining with black first to prevent the red making the eyes look tired. Amethyst purple is also a suggested color for green eyes. Brown eyes look especially good with midnight blue, as the dark shade brings out the light specks in the eyes. Earth tones and mink gray are also particularly flattering. FAnd for hazel eyes, Tilbury recommends emerald green, gold, and plum to really make the green color in hazel shine. (This paragraph is a bit long, could I separate it into small chunks for each eye color? Or is that too many short bits? I can definitely talk more about each eye color if I need to.) Metallic shades are another idea to consider when playing with colorful liner. Metallics are perfect for a subtler approach to colored liner while still allowing your eye look to shine.
19
Dark greys and browns are recommended by Vogue to replace your usual cat eye whileand still maintaining have a a classic feel to the your look. Silver is my personal favorite for metallic liners because its light shade really emphasizes the eyes but it’s also not super bright and loud. Certain liquid metallics will also dry to be a little on the sheer side, so they layer nicely with eyeshadow. Once you have chosen your perfect color for your eyeliner, the possibilities of how to wear it only stop with the your imagination. The color can be worn purely on its own for a one-step eye look, or you can be a bit more complex with layering and placement. Besides the standard use of the waterline and the cat eye, the lower lash line is a popular placement for colored liner. Darker colors can be smudged out to create a smoky eye. MAnd many runway makeup artists will use a variety of colors for a cut crease look. You can layerThe colors can be layered together you think look goodto an individual’s taste together, or even just put a little colored liner in your inner corner for a small pop of color. Colored eyeliner is a makeup artist’s secret weapon for a variety of eye looks, and this spring is the perfect time to add it to anyone’s your makeup arsenal. The versatility available in this tool makes it useable for all kinds of looks and will truly step up anyyour look. Give it a go, and let theyour eyes shine.

FOR MEN FOR MEN FOR MEN
by mckenna miller Spring is the perfect time to mix and match your denim. It is a fabric that is versatile, stylish and loved by many for these reasons. These pieces can be dressed up or down for a multitude of occasions. Here are five ways to spice up your denim game this spring. 1. Denim Jacket A traditional denim jacket is an item that can be worn for a number of occasions and can easily be pulled off. This timeless look can be made casual by pairing it with a simple white t-shirt, or made into a bold statement by wearing it over a colorful hoodie. Spring’s sunny, yet not too hot weather is the perfect time to break it out, and they can be layered over almost any top to accommodate for the temperature. Denim jackets can also be paired with almost any pair of pants, including trousers, tight-fitting joggers or my favorite, the denim-on-denim look. Pair your denim jacket with slim or skinny jeans to transform and add variety to any outfit.

2. Denim on Denim When pairing denim with denim, it is important to follow the rule of contrast. Whether it’s dark with light or thick with thin, it is important to keep contrast between the two (or more) denim pieces. Pair denims together that have different washes, to avoid looking too matchy-matchy. Although double denim outfits are typically on the casual side, they can be a great option for when you want to look stylish with minimal effort. Pulling off this look can be tricky, but it looks amazing when done correctly. This trend has been seen on many celebrities, such as Miguel, who has been seen on the streets wearing a black button-down denim jacket over a solid black shirt with grey distressed jeans. 3. Dressed-Up Jeans The key to dressing up your jeans is choosing the right style. If you want to master this look, try choosing a slim fit in a dark wash that features minimal distressing. Pair them with a long-sleeve shirt and a lightweight blazer for the perfect spring date-night or day-at-the-office look. Dressed-up jeans are very versatile and can be worn with almost any shirt or jacket to fit your personal style. Pairing these pants will make any outfit look more professional and put-together.
4. White Jeans White jeans are an ideal piece for your closet this spring. Blue, navy, and black jeans are classic, but none of them will help you stand out and express your individuality more than a white pair. Liven up your outfit by pairing them with a colored or printed tshirt or jacket. If simpler is your style, pair the jeans with a grey top. Neutral colored footwear is a great choice with them as well. 5. Denim Accessories Pair any outfit with a denim backpack, hat, sunglasses or shoes. Several brands such as Tom’s and Vans have been experimenting to incorporate denim onto shoes and sneakers, giving them a more textured appearance. These shoes can be worn with almost any outfit combination. The American Apparel denim gym bag or Adidas sleek backpacks give a different twist on the traditional bag or backpack. In addition, Ray Bans have created new denim wayfarer sunglasses that are perfect for springtime. These denim accessories teamed-up with any outfit are guaranteed to spice up your spring wardrobe.

SIMPLE WAYS TO
amp up your living space by katie fast

Style is elemental. One of the most common ways people show their taste is through the way they dress, but personal style can also be displayed in one’s living space. A little home decor can go a long way in showing off your personality or the way you want others to perceive you, and there are a multitude of different ways to do so. The Entryway When walking into your home, there are three items that won’t go unnoticed. The first is a doormat. This is a functional item – think less mopping, and more wiping your shoes on this nifty little rug. Another way to keep your place clean and boost organization is by having a shoe rack in the entryway. This acts as storage and display all in one, and is an uncluttered way to add some flare. The last item in your entryway should be a coat rack (if a closet isn’t already there). It can hold all those jackets you carelessly throw wherever when you get home, and is convenient for guests. It can also add a design element – whether it’s wooden with a stained finish, sleek black or even metal. The Living Room Beyond the entryway, the living room could benefit from a few new key items. The couch is the most prominent piece in any area, and it can draw good attention with the correct pillow pairing. No, the pillows that came with couch that have the exact same fabric won’t cut it. Pillows can have a feminine reputation, but solid colors, suede, or even leather fabric can lend a masculine feel if that’s more what you’re looking for. A basket or ottoman with storage is practical in the living room, while also contributing to the overall design by adding a unique touch, whether it’s an actual wicker basket or a leather ottoman. It allows for a quick place to stash random items when people are coming over and you forgot to pick up, or can be used as a permanent place for blankets or gaming equipment. The last way to cozy up this room is to add an area rug. This one will most likely be more expensive than the rug in the entryway, but it adds color and comfort. Try a textured one like shag for a maximum amount of compliments.

The Bedroom The bedroom deserves some love too – after all, it is the most personal room in any living space. A proper down comforter is truly the only necessary item. Comforters come in such a variety of thicknesses, patterns and colors that basing the rest of your decor off of the one you choose will make it easy to transform a room. You could stop there, but there are two more pieces that really complete the look and tie everything together. A lamp with an interesting base and simple shade positioned on the nightstand can add ambiance in lighting and flair in personality. Finally, there is the mirror. It doesn’t have to be full body, but try to go for something less basic than one with the plain white plastic trim around it. Place it above a dresser or on any empty wall to imitate an art piece. A copper rustic frame, or whatever style catches your eye and matches the comforter, will work just fine. Anywhere Artwork can be included in any area. For example, invest in a landscape piece if you have a rustic style, or black and white photographs if you’re more modern. Command strips make hanging easy, so there are no excuses for bare walls and boring rooms. Amping up your living space can be beneficial and enjoyable, and a few items in each room can transform the look or functionality for the better.

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
WHAT ARE THEY?
33
by halee olson Personally when I think of springtime, I think of a fresh start. The weather is making big changes, so why can’t we? The snow is melting away, the sunshine is coming back out of hiding and color is making its way into nature again, so let’s reflect that in our own personal being. A good way to start melting away that negativity is by making affirmations for yourself. Affirmations act as a way to bring us back into ourselves, make it through tough situations and boost self-confidence. Dr. Carmen Harra, a psychologist and author, defines affirmations as “proven methods of self-improvement because of their ability to rewire our brains.” Maybe this sounds a little far-fetched, but there is science behind affirmations. Evidence-based research shows that affirmations actually change the brain on a cellular level. In other words, what you think about matters. “Thoughts have a direct connection to your health,” says Dr. Joseph Dispenza, author of Physics, the Brain and Your Reality. Research shows that thinking happy thoughts produces happy chemicals the same way that negative thoughts will produce sad chemicals. Happy thoughts can help promote wellness, positivity and an all-around happy life. Sounds like it’s worth a shot, right?

All you have to do is write a phrase that you want to adopt into your life and ingrain it into your mind. You could say the phrase aloud throughout the day, make it your phone background or write it down in your planner. Just make sure it is somewhere in plain sight where you will often be reminded of it. Examples of affirmations are: I am confident and at ease. I am capable of passing this test. I am perfect the way I am. I am talented and intelligent. I will not stress over things I can not control. I can handle anything that comes my way today. At first, you might not believe what you are affirming to yourself, but no words are empty words. “If you constantly say ‘I can’t,’ the energy of your words will repel the universal force against you,” said Harra in an article she wrote for the Huffington Post. “But if you say ‘I can!’ the universe will endow you with the abilities to do just that.”

TOP FIVE WAYS TO
spring clean your life this season
36
by taylor gage
“The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment,” Marie Kondo, an author of a top selling book for organizing says. Spring cleaning may seem like a thing of the past, but these five fresh twists applied to the old concept will inspire anyone to declutter their life this season. 1. Donate Clothes One of the best ways to kick-start a spring cleaning journey is to donate parts of your wardrobe that you no longer wear. This may seem to be an intimidating task, but with guidance from Marie Kondo and her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, it’s shown that anyone can minimize their closet while also feeling good about helping people in need. In her book, Kondo expresses the importance of finding joy in your closet. She advises readers to dump their clothes into a pile, and while sorting through it all to keep only the items that bring them joy. She emphasizes that any items that do not carry joy should be donated. With this method in mind, getting rid of clothing will be a synch, and you will finish knowing you did something good for others. 2. Reorganize Whether you live in an apartment, dorm or house, reorganizing is crucial. We all get tired of our furniture or decor being in the same spot for months on end, so spice things up by changing where your couch sits, or by switching up the items on your desk. By changing around simple things, you are creating a new environment that will inspire creativity and potentially add uniqueness to your work. 3. Stick to a Planner College is basically defined by trying to stay afloat and completing all of your assignments, attending appointments and engaging in other personal activities. Many students will start off their year using a planner, but as time goes on it’s easy tofall out of that routine. According to positivelysplendid.com, one benefit of using a planner is that the choices you make are more intentional. Meaning when you have a daily routine written down, it is harder to become distracted by frivioulus tasks. By sticking to a planner, you are keeping track of the responsibilities that must get done and keeping your activities organized in your mind. 4. Get Rid of Negative Influences Negative influences are a constant hardship in most people’s lives. . Whether they are people or activities, they affect everyone, and can be really difficult to overcome. The good news is that there are many ways to eliminate these. A great way to do so is to surround yourself with only positive-minded people. We all have the ability to choose our friends, so it is our responsibility to embrace genuine people rather than unfavorable ones. It may seem like a lot of work, but you can also change your own lifestyle to help increase the positive vibes in your life, whether that be exercising more or eating healthier foods. 5. Cleaning Out Your Social Media Social media is an amazing tool, but it can also be a source of negativity. If you are scrolling through one of your accounts and you see a person’s post that is extremely negative or offensive, the best way to stay in a good mindset is by avoiding theirs – delete or unfollow that person. Although this may seem harsh, you have to do what’s best for your health and outlook. As for your own account, if you see old pictures of yourself that are embarrassing or that don’t bring you happiness, it’s probably best to get rid of them. Your social media will then represent you in a more professional and accurate way.

MEET THE EDITOR:

by sarah wright Emma Hassemer tells it like it is. From committee member to editor-in-chief, she says she has always believed in being honest when it comes to creative vision. Work gets done smoothly at Trend with her strong, confrontational leadership style. “I don’t think people will grow unless they are given the 100% honest truth on work,” Hassemer says. “When an idea is great, I make sure to present them with compliments and when it’s not up to the standards, I give them bullet point feedback. I don’t sugar coat anything.” Outside the realm of fashion, Hassemer has many interests. Something most people may not know about her is that she has a strong eye for interior design. It’s a passion she often doesn’t choose to talk about. “Not to toot my own horn, but I have such a good eye for decorating,” she says. Hassemer is also a beauty industry fanatic. You can almost never catch her without a flawless face of makeup. Her blog has an entire section devoted to her knowledge on beauty products. “I love the dewy, glossy look,” Hassemer says. “It’s kind of the theme for this semester’s beauty spread, so keep an eye out.” Hassemer says she can see herself working for a big-time fashion magazine in the future. Her main goal is to end up combining her two passions: fashion and writing, which is what Trend has allowed her to do. “I hope to have a lasting impact on the committee members,” she says. “I want to be not only a superior to them, but a fellow co-worker. I want them to feel inspired, motivated and how I did when I was a committee member. I want the best of the best to come back to Trend.” The editor-in-chief’s biggest piece of advice is to get as involved as possible within the publication – to join every committee you possibly can. “I dabbled in editorial, fashion, social media – and I feel like I honestly got the most out of Trend because I went into as many realms as I could and learned so much more than I would’ve if I had stuck with one category.” Although becoming editor-in-chief fulfills Hassemer’s ambitions of gaining more leadership experience, it also satisfies her love of having full creative reign. This upcoming issue of Trend will showcase photoshoots that are a product of her ability to provide raw feedback to grow her members to their full potential.
