AMES IN THE SUMMER
BY: MEGAN DALE
Ames is a city that comes alive during the nine months of the year when Iowa State’s 36,660 students are around. It’s hard to get bored during the school year with the hustle and bustle of campus events, but if you’re sticking around Ames in the summer, you might find yourself searching for something to do. Here are five ideas to help you discover some fun from May to August:
01. Enjoy the Outdoors The Ames area has a lot of different parks, from those that are best for having a simple picnic and laying in the sun, to those you can go to get your hike on. The most popular of the latter is Ledges State Park–a destination you can totally make a day trip out of! Just a short 25 minute drive from Ames, Ledges is one of Iowa’s most beautiful places, and a great destination for enjoying a beautiful summer’s day.
02. Visit Downtown Ames Most of what we see as college students is the campustown area of Ames. We know the hot spots on Welch, but few know the hot spots on Main Street. Downtown Ames is absolutely beautiful and is full of many different shops, cafes and bars that college students rarely frequent. Become a local when you live in Ames this summer, and find a place you love downtown. 2
03. Go to the Farmer’s Market
Though it’s tempting to stay in bed on Saturday mornings, get out into the sunshine and enjoy the local pickings at the farmer’s market! You will find delicious produce, beautiful fresh flowers and an atmosphere that will definitely put you in a great mood. The Farmer’s Market is located in downtown Ames, so you can stop there as well on your planned visit!
04. Visit the Library
Parks Library has summer hours and is the best place to go if you need to work on assignments for your summer classes, or even for a nice place to relax. Read a good book or work on your latest blog post in an environment where you’re bound to get work done. Finding a seat will be much easier in the summer as well!
05. Take a Trip to a Nearby City
Taking time out of your busy work, school and/or internship schedule is so important–it is the summer after all, and there is no better time to travel and explore! Whether you take a quick trip to Des Moines or a longer visit to Minneapolis or Kansas City, make sure you do something you wouldn’t normally do. These cities provide hundreds of options for things to do and will provide you with a nice break from the more relaxed-paced Ames.
Though Ames is Iowa State central and you might think there are only things to do when school is in session, there are multiple ways to pass the time during your stay. Enjoy your summer!

MINIMALISM MADE EASY
BY: RACHEL CESSNA
If you ever find yourself searching for a fashionable look you can wear to class and then carry over into a night out, the minimalist style has you covered. The trend not only gives you versatility, but the different items can be mixed and matched so you can keep your wardrobe small. Wearing neutral colors is what defines minimalism (think Kanye West). Basically it’s dressing in a way that won’t draw attention for being bright or flashy. Other than that, there aren’t a lot of strict rules to follow. If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve created a guide with outfits for every day of the week.
Monday:
On a lazy day like Monday when it’s hard to even get out of bed, you don’t want to wear anything that makes you feel even slightly uncomfortable. For both comfort and style, try pairing black joggers with a black or army green sweater or t-shirt and some black sneakers. The darker neutral colors look stylish and the comfy fit lets you relax all day.
Tuesday:
Sometimes tuesdays feel dull–the weekend just ended and you still have three more days to power through. Lighten up the day with a white, button-up t-shirt and cream colored chinos. If there’s a chilly breeze throw on a blazer or jacket in a darker white or tan shade. Try wearing comfortable oxfords or clean white sneakers to complete this look.
Wednesday:
You might be getting anxious for the weekend, but don’t worry– you’re halfway there. Flow through your Wednesday in dark gray shorts or trousers, a light heather gray tee and a matching bomber jacket. White sneakers (like the Adidas All Stars) add the perfect touch. This sporty style looks simple, yet trendy. 4
Thursday:
Add some class to your Thursday with black chinos, a white long-sleeve button-down shirt and black boots or oxfords–the Steve Madden Chukka boots work well. Despite the simplicity of this ensemble, the contrast of the black and white adds a touch of sophistication.
Friday:
Put the week behind you– it’s finally Friday! If you want an outfit for class that can double as your night-out look, bring back the black joggers or nicer black chinos, a white t-shirt and a black bomber jacket or pullover. Wearing multiple layers means you’re prepared for both the warm day and the cool night, and you look stylish enough to go out but relaxed enough for class.
Saturday:
Make a statement while keeping it minimal in dark-colored fitted trousers with a light-colored t-shirt. A matching blazer keeps it classy without looking too over-the-top. Wear black sneakers for comfort and style.
Sunday:
For a lighter, spring look on Sunday, add some pastel to your look. Whether it be a pale pink t-shirt or soft green chinos, the pop of color fits perfectly with the season. Feel free to incorporate any of the items from earlier in the week.
You now have a sense of what minimalism is and what it takes to pull it off. Don’t worry too much about the fit or the fabric– color matters most. Wear what feels comfortable and dress for the weather. Many of the pieces used for minimalism work for all seasons and can be mixed and matched without looking like you got dressed in the dark. Hold onto these items for a while, because simplicity doesn’t go out of style. 5
DIY: DECOR TO ADORE
BY: JESSICA DYER
Do-It-Yourself is trending in every facet of our lives these days, and one of the main ways people are using it is to turn their room from drab to fab. There are many different projects that can be done to improve the look of your room and give it a personality that matches your own!
Headboard One dramatic change your room likely needs is the replacing of your headboard. You can update yours easily and save a ton of money DIYing it rather than picking up a brand new one. One way to do this is to construct a wooden outline of the size you want the headboard to be with one beam in the center for support. Then wrap it in some sort of interfacing to provide some structure. Finally, wrap the front of the headboard in a fabric that you feel represents you. Now you have a headboard that personalizes your space!

Photo Board
Wooden Letters
n i e v li e l y t s
Another way to spice up your space is to create a hanging photo board. To do this, get the outline of a photo frame and paint it to match your style. Then use industrial staple to attach yarn going lengthwise across the frame. All that’s left to do is get some clothes pins and use them to hold your pictures! If extra bling is desired, feel free to hot glue a synthetic flower or something of the like in the corner.
Another way to personalize your home is to buy the cheap wooden letters from the craft department in most stores, then cover them with fabric or paint them to add some flare. The fabric should be attached with either industrial staples or hot glue. To adhere the letters to the wall, use Command Strips to avoid any damage.
The list of DIY projects for your room goes on and on, so feel free to Google or look on Pinterest. There are thousands of crafty room ideas waiting for you to stumble upon them, so get looking and then get creative!

COLOR CORRECTING CRAZINESS
BY: HANNAH RANDOLPH
Forget loading up concealer on those dark spots, under eye circles, pimples and redness. The makeup technique known as color correcting is here for you, and won’t let you down!
Colorful palettes that contain purple, orange, peach, green and yellow concealers are popping up on several shelves from various brands. Their main purpose is to create a more even complexion without having to pile on an excessive amount. The makeup is usually in cream form and blended with a sponge or a brush before putting foundation on top. If you know the color wheel, then color correcting is easy-peasy. But if you don’t, all you have to do is keep reading.
8
Purple:
Rids of yellow tones and brightens dull skin. This color is usually placed on the apples of the cheeks and along the chin to add a natural illumination to your skin.
Orange and peach:
Cover up blue-toned dark circles and spots. Orange is better for darker skin while a pinky-peach is better for lighter skin tones. These colors can be swept under the eyes to erase that tired look that so many college students know so well.
Green:
Will help you say “goodbye” to redness, whether it is rosy cheeks or a pimple you want to cover up. Areas where redness most often occurs is around the nose and cheeks.
Yellow:
Will cover up any dark circles or spots with a purple undertone. It can also be used to cover up noticeable veins or bruises. This color is frequently used on olive or tan skin for that flawless look when you apply your foundation on top.
There are a variety of high-end and drugstore brands that sell color correcting products. For those on a tighter budget, check out the E.l.f. Color Corrective Concealer for just $3 or the NYX Professional Color Correcting Palette that retails for $12. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, Urban Decay has their Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid. Each color is sold separately, which allows you to pick and choose the necessary colors you need to perfect your skin. Each tube is $26. Stila Cosmetics has their Correct and Perfect All-InOne Color Correcting Palette for $45 if you’re looking for all of the colors in one place. These colors can be a bit a bit intimidating, but with a little practice and trial-and-error, anyone can become an expert color corrector. 9
SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX
BY: MEGAN DALE
It doesn’t take a genius to be aware of the fact that today’s world revolves around technology, and could not exist without it. People of all different generations, not just Millennials, spend a good amount of every day tapping away on a device that fits in their hand. Whether it’s updating statuses, tweeting, instagramming or one of the many other forms of social media, we’re all plugged in.
Admit it, you are. We all are. My relationship with social media was comparative to that of an undeserving boyfriend–I gave so much time to it and got nearly nothing back. I always went back to it when I was sad or bored, even when I knew it wouldn’t make me happy. I defended it when my parents told me it wasn’t good for me. It was my main priority even when I knew I had more important things to focus on.
It took me a long time, but I eventually did what anyone would have to do with any toxic relationship–I cut it off. After the election season was over, I decided I would take a month long break from all social media sites. Yes, even Snapchat. That month was freeing. I found a new motivation for life that I never knew existed. Though it seems impossible at first, I made it through and you can too. These are my tips on how to carry out a successful social media detox. 10
01. Delete the Apps
This is where it all starts. You absolutely, MUST delete all of your social media apps from your phone. There is no way you will be successful without taking this first step. I know, it was hard for me too, but let them go. All your profiles will still be there when you get back.
02. Get Through the First Week
The hardest part of the detox is at the beginning. It’s within the first few days that you sit on the bus or in a restaurant and wonder what you could possibly do to pass the time since you can’t mindlessly scroll through Instagram. In my experience, I found myself reading news articles more often. I would go to E!’s website or Buzzfeed and read about my favorite celebrities. It was a good way to get that same feeling of keeping up without being on a social media site. The first week passes, and you can survive it.
03. Fill Up Your Schedule
You would be amazed at the amount of free time that you have when you don’t spend hours a day staring at your phone. I found more availability for schoolwork, blogging, visiting friends and even more time for Netflix. If you fill up your schedule and don’t spend time sitting around, you won’t even notice the time you haven’t spent on social media!
04. Realize the Benefits
While you do feel like you’re missing out on the posts of all your faves, there are so many perks to a social media detox. Take the time to figure out what is important to you and what is worth putting your phone down for. Though you can love social media and your phone, there are times to put it aside. This experience will teach you that. Things are sweeter in smaller doses anyways!
05. Share Your Experience
r o f e m i t f l e s r u yo
Tell your friends about your social media detox and all of the benefits it had for you, and maybe even encourage them to go on a detox of their own. Everyone should learn that their device isn’t their entire life, and with your experience you can be an advocate for this! Share your story and change some habits, it’ll be rewarding. Taking a hiatus from social media is definitely not easy, but I promise it is worth giving a try. Best of luck!

STREETWEAR, EVERYWHERE
BY: OLIVIA HANSON
Streetwear is all about expressing who you are without having to say it, and this year there is no shortage of clothing allowing you to express yourself in whatever language you choose. It’s no coincidence that there is currently a diverse array of styles hitting the streets. Streetwear has been serving many purposes other than being just casual and stylish, such as exhibiting political views, showcasing music groups and other pop culture trends and displaying art of all kind– just to name a few. Streetwear has the power to inflict change in the world just by displaying meaningful and sassy banter, as well as showcase the aesthetic and mood of the time period. These all-inclusive lines by designers this season are sure to leave no one out from being able to express his or her own style.
Distressed to Impress
This year in streetwear, distressed garments are taking the stage– from jeans to tees to jackets. Designers discovered the trick to making distressed garments look sophisticated while making them casual and comfortable. Plus, the style can make you look like a million dollars when used in the correct fashion. A pair of distressed jeans can level up the classiness of an outfit when paired with your favorite show-stopping heels. A distressed dress can completely transform with statement accessories, knee high boots or a leather jacket.
Get Graphic
Graphic messages of all kinds hit the runways this year from NYC all the way to Paris. This year’s graphic clothing lines are nothing short of revolutionary. Being one of the arguably most controversial times in history, many designers decided to take this approach in order to express their opinion without actually saying it. However, not all graphics are controversial. In fact, many of them are fun and free-spirited. On the runway, designers surprised people with graphics on hats, boots, shirts, you name it. Clothing this year has a lot to say.

Peace, Love, and Plenty of Prints
Pinstripes, paisley, and polkadots… whatever tickles your fancy. This year is all about embracing colors, shapes and sizes of all kinds. Throw caution out the window by mixing florals with flannels, or wear your favorite faux fur and silk garments for a night out on the town with the girls. Anything that embraces the decades of the 70s through the 90s flies. This season’s retro and geometric prints will be sure to brighten the moods of anyone you walk past. As legendary streetwear and fashion icon, Mrs. Iris Apfel, said: “Never be afraid to stop traffic.”
Rose-Colored Shades
This season’s shades will, without a doubt, be able to inspire anyone to see the world through “rose-colored glasses.” Peace and love vibes, as well as hues from every shade of the rainbow are making their comeback, along with a myriad of different styles of shades. Look no further than your parents’ closet this year to bring back the 70s and the groovy oversized shades that came along with it.
Or fast forward to the future with some cutting-edge shades of virtually every geometric shape imaginable. Heart shapes, cat eyes, aviators and round hippie sunglasses will all grace the eyes of many this year.

DISTRESSED TO IMPRESS
BY: MADISON ADAMS
Today’s fashion icons have a way of making looking grunge also look red carpet appropriate. The best part about this trend is that it can be easily duplicated on a college student’s budget. Items you have buried in your drawers or in the back of your closet are all you need to create your new grunge look. Ripped jeans have been around for decades. Instead of spending a benjamin on an pre-cut pair, you can easily DIY at home. A new, similar trend arising is distressed denim jackets. Another option as warmer weather approaches is turning an old pair of jeans into your go-to summer shorts. The best part about distressing yourself is that you can make it exactly how you like it.
Distressed denim:
01. What you will need: Tweezers, Sandpaper and Scissors. 02. Decide where you want the holes (I recommend trying on the jeans to do this). 03. Sandpaper the desired areas to make them look more worn. 04. Cut a few horizontal slits in the sandpapered area. 05. Use tweezers to pull out the blue threads Tips: If you are trying this for the first time, consider getting a cheap pair of jeans from Goodwill or Forever 21. Your first try might not look like the perfect pair of American Eagle distressed jeans, but with practice they have the ability to be.
Cut out top:
Option 1- Keyhole cut out: What you will need: Old t-shirt and scissors. 01. Choose your favorite old t-shirt that’s already a bit worn. 02. Try on the shirt and decide how low-cut you want it. 03. Lay your shirt out flat and measure where you are going to cut so it’s even. 04. Draw the shape you are wanting to cut out (I recommend flipping the shirt inside out so the lines don’t show on the outside) 05. Cut out the desired shape below the collar of the shirt
Option 2- Cold Shoulders:
01. Make sure your shirt is inside out. 02. Fold it in half. 03. Mark where you want your shoulders to be cut out. Tips: This DIY usually works better with shirts that are baggier. For both of these options, consider making smaller cuts– you can always cut more as you go if you want to. You can also apply the distressing rules for jeans to an old t-shirt to make it look more worn.
Now that “raggedy” clothing your mom used to yell at you for wearing is considered high fashion, and you can make your own for much cheaper. Another major plus: when older people question you buying already distressed clothing for retail price, you can tell them it cost you nothing to make your “new” jeans at home.

MAKEUP DOS & DON’T
BY: JADE MART
Applying makeup isn’t always all that glamorous, especially if you don’t really know what you’re doing. Who knew there were so many rules when it comes to putting on makeup? No one masters the practice of makeup in just one day; it takes time and patience. There are right and wrong ways to apply your daily makeup look and with the help of the beauty gurus out there, we can easily learn to perfect our makeup application process. There are constantly new makeup trends appearing on beauty blogs, YouTube and in magazines and sometimes it can be a tad overwhelming to master what you need to know. Well, here’s the breakdown.
DO
DON’T
FOUNDATION: Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone (cool, warm or neutral) and blend it down to your neck. If you’re struggling to find the perfect color, go to your local Sephora or Ulta and they will help color match you. You can also find the perfect foundation shade if you apply the formula on the back/side of your neck.
FOUNDATION: Stay away from shades that are too dark or light for you. This can create an orangey unnatural look or wash you out.
CONCEALER: Use a shade that is 1 or 2 shades darker and set it with powder so it doesn’t slide or completely disappear throughout the day.
CONCEALER: When you pick a shade that’s too light it’s usually too much of a contrast with your foundation and is hard to blend out.
CONTOUR: Make a “three” shape from your temples to the hollows of your cheeks to your jawline on the outside of your face. Use a bronzer or contouring powder or cream that is a couple shades darker than your skin.
CONTOUR: Don’t bronze your whole face or use too dark or too orange-y of a shade, or you could be at risk of looking like an oompa loompa.
LASHES: Curl your lashes with an eyelash curler before putting on mascara and apply your mascara in a wiggling motion to help keep them separated and full-looking.
LASHES: Don’t apply a layer of mascara on top of an already dry coat and then curl them, or the result will be clumpy.
The most important part to keep in mind when doing your makeup is to have fun and wear what makes you feel comfortable! The main point of these tips and tricks is to help you fulfill a more natural and effortless look. 15
