To Buy or Not to Buy: A Guide to Beauty Holiday Gift Sets Kajsa Hallberg
‘Tis the season for holiday shopping! Beauty companies have been releasing their seasonal collections, Black Friday is swiftly approaching and soon we’ll be on break celebrating the holidays with family and friends. Holiday gift sets have a history of being convenient, and sometimes coveted, options for presents. However, not all gift sets are created equal. Sometimes brands merely combine a few mini options together and tack on a high price. With how popular these sets are, major retailers like Sephora will offer hundreds of options and with so many sets to consider, it can be difficult to figure out what’s worth your money. In the spirit of the holidays, here are a few beauty gift sets available at Sephora that are cost effective, and a few that you may want to think twice about. Skincare is always a tricky area when looking at sets and minis available – prices tend to go up quickly even when a set can only be used a few times. Tatcha, a J-Beauty brand loved by many in the beauty community, offers the Skincare for Makeup Lovers Obento Box. This kit has travel sizes of the Water Cream moisturizer, the Silk Canvas primer, the Violet-C Radiance mask and the full size of their Luminous Dewy Skin Mist. While this set is a bit pricey, retailing for $64, the products will last longer than one-time use samples and the inclusion of a fullsize facial mist is a plus. The other set worth considering is Mask Frenzy by Peter Thomas Roth. This is a collection of six facial masks, all 1.7 oz each, from a brand that is highly rated
on Sephora’s website. The six masks offered cover a wide range of facial treatments and the sizes offered allow for two to three uses out of each one. This kit retails for $75, but the fact that this set can last for more than a month helps justify the higher price. In the area of cosmetics, Sephora offers quite a few holiday sets from a variety of brands. Two collections from Bite Beauty stand out against the gift set crowd. One is a collection of four mini lipsticks– two reds, a mauve and a nude– for $25. The other set is the astrology collection from Bite Beauty, which consists of twelve mini-lipsticks retailing for $75. When asked, many shoppers agreed that both were very good deals, but also decided that the set of four was a safer option due to the large range of colors available in the set of twelve. The one gift set that most shoppers agreed is a great bargain is Too Faced’s Under the Christmas Tree Breakaway Face and Eye Set. For $49, shoppers receive two eyeshadow palettes, a face palette and a deluxe sample size of the Better Than Sex mascara. The final set that stood out, and elicited an audible gasp from one shopper nearby when she saw it, was a trio of mini liquid eyeshadow shimmers from Stila. The holiday
collection, retailing for $25, includes nude pink, lavender gray and chestnut brown shimmer shadows. Leaving Sephora after seeing the available gift sets will leave you with many ideas about gift shopping for the upcoming holidays. Whatever you decide to buy this holiday season, be sure to think about quality, price and practicality. Sometimes great deals aren’t as good if all the products included won’t be used, and you want to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth in quality. Amongst all the clutter, there are some excellent options for sets that allow you to try out luxury products at a fraction of the cost. Hopefully, you find the perfect items for your or someone else’s holiday glam. Happy shopping and have a wonderful holiday season!
Winter Lookbook: Hydrated Glow Allison Martyr
With the winter season quickly approaching, it is important to adapt your skincare and makeup look to fit the season’s harsh weather. But don’t fret, with the season comes shimmer and shine, glittery golds and daring reds. The key to achieving the perfect makeup look during the winter is perfecting your skincare routine. Follow these few tips to get you started on creating your own personalized routine. The most important step towards achieving hydrated and healthy skin during the winter: Always remove your makeup. Not removing your makeup, makes your skin more susceptible to breakouts and rashes. Don’t use your fingers when applying your makeup. Dry, flaky skin does not handle fingers well. Consider using a beauty blender (natural coverage), brushes (coverage depends on type of brush) or a silicone makeup drop (full coverage, this tool doesn’t absorb products like other tools). Exfoliate. Exfoliating your skin has an abundance of benefits. Before picking out an exfoliator, make sure to know your skin type and find a product that suits it. Dry skin requires exfoliators that not only remove dead skin cells, but hydrate at the same time. Reach for Skinfood’s Black Sugar Mask Wash Off Exfoliator (under $10). Acne-prone skin requires a formula that will not allow further breakouts to occur. Reach for chemical exfoliators over physical exfoliators. Skip the scrubs. Try e.l.f. Cosmetics Gentle Peeling Exfoliant Cleanser ($10). Oily skin requires a formula that will combat oily skin and even your face’s natural balance. Don’t over-exfoliate. Reach for Garnier SkinActive Clean + Blackhead Eliminating Scrub ($8). Homemade Face Masks There are two options when it comes to face masks: store-bought or homemade. Instead of re-purchasing your go-to mask from the store, here are some inexpensive
masking options that you can create at home with ingredients straight from your kitchen. Homemade masks: look online to find exact measurements and instructions for each mask. — Brown sugar and coconut oil. Benefit: provides major hydration. — Oatmeal, coconut oil and warm water. Benefits: prevents acne and soaks up the skin’s excess oils. — Strawberries, honey and yogurt. Benefits: creates a glow, prevents aging and soothes skin.
Everyday Winter Makeup Look Now that your skin is hydrated and ready to brace the cold, it’s time to move on to makeup. Winter is the perfect time to play around with dark lip colors, bold smokey eyes and flushed pink cheeks. Dark lips. Think deep browns, purples and reds. — Want to try a purple? Try Anastasia Beverly Hills matte lipstick in the shade Plumeria ($9.99). — Want to try a brown? Try Dose of Colors liquid lipstick in the shade Chocolate Wasted ($18). — Want to try a red? Try Lime Crime matte lipstick in the shade Bloodmoon ($20). Reach for a hydrating foundation. Here are a couple to consider: Bareminerals Pure Serum Foundation ($22.13) or Covergirl and Olay’s Tonerehab 2-in-1 Foundation ($7.74). Apply a primer before your foundation, for effortless application, and long-lasting wear. Here are some primers to consider: — Joah Beauty Glow Activator Radiance Primer ($10) — Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer ($22) — Lancome LA Base Pro Perfecting Makeup Primer ($42) Rosy Cheeks. Brighten up your skin during the cold months by adding some light pink and peachy colors. Blush colors do not have to change year round (saving money is always a win!) Find a blush color perfect for your skintone: — Check out Maybelline’s Fit Me Powder Blush, available in ten different shades to fit all different skin tones ($6)
During the cold months, reach
for your favorite glimmering golds and silvers. Practice perfecting the smokeyeye look and don’t forget your favorite eyeliner. Eyeshadow. — Don’t stray away from using colors in your smokey-eye look. Try navy or dark purple to spice things up. Lining your bottom lashes with white eyeliner will top the look off with major contrast. — Now it’s time for eyeliner. Play with different eyeliner styles until you find your favorite. — Brown eyeliner: Try Kat Von D Beauty’s Tattoo Liner in Mad Max Brown ($20). — Dramatic Lines: Maybelline New York Master Kajal Liner in Onyx ($8) — Cat eye: Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner ($22) — Silver eyeliner: Ulta Metallic Automatic Eyeliner in Silver ($8) Nail Polish. Winter bonus! Here are some of the best nail polish shades for the season. — Shimmering Gold: Essie Nail Polish, Shade: Good as Gold ($8.99) — Deep maroon: OPI Nail Lacquer, shade: Midnight in Moscow ($7.80) — Navy blue: Essie Nail Polish, Shade: After Schoolboy Blazer ($9.00) — Emerald green: OPI Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms polish, shade: Envy the Adventure ($10.50) — Metallic red: Butter London, Shade: Knees Up ($15)
Hot Lip Shades For Cold Weather Melissa Van Horn
With fall in full swing and winter on its way, it’s time to break out the seasonal lip colors. Lip colors are a fun addition to your regular makeup routine; and though you should ultimately wear whatever you feel the most comfortable in, winter is a great time to experiment with bold colors. Choosing a seasonal shade can be easy if you understand what colors compliment your skin tone and what you feel confident wearing . Some fall favorites are deep reds, cool-tone reds, berry shades and darker pinks. A popular red shade on the market right now is Uncensored from Rihanna’s makeup line, Fenty Beauty. This shade has been deemed “Rihanna’s favorite lip color” by Rihanna herself and as one of the most universal reds on the market. Another go-to lip shade is Sin by MAC Cosmetics. This deep maroon is perfect for date nights and holiday parties. While Fenty Beauty and MAC have tempting reviews on their lipsticks, they aren’t always the most affordable options. You can find a killer lip shade at a local drugstore for almost half the price of a MAC lipstick. Maybelline and Burt’s Bees products can be found at the drugstore and have long-lasting formulas that last for the majority of your day without reapplication. Maybelline has a
wide variety of colors and finishes, and Burt’s Bees has made several red carpet appearances. Celebrities such as Emmy Rossum and Gwyneth Paltrow have been spotted wearing Burt’s Bees for their red carpet looks. According to Iowa State University alumnus Abi Jo Meekins, a self-taught makeup artist and beauty enthusiast, choosing the right lip color is all about understanding your skin’s undertones. “A cool trick I read about is to check the veins on your forearms,” Meekins said. “If they look more green, you’re probably more warm-toned. If they look blue/purple, then you are most likely cool-toned.” Meekins said that darker colors and berry shades tend to look best on darker skin tones. Pinks, corals and nudes look best on warm tones. Cooltoned reds and deep shades are best for cool-toned skin. Meekins said most anyone can rock a red lip. Confidence is key when it comes to lipstick. If you’re scared to try a shade outside of your comfort zone in the colder months, ease into it by wearing a darker lip at night and on the weekends. Adding a fun lip to your everyday makeup routine can spice up your whole look, and this is the perfect season to give it a try.

This Season’s Most Popular Winter Coats: And Why Your Closet Needs Them Alexis Myszka
Wintertime is the season of bundling up and staying in, as temperatures decline and clothes become fluffier. There is nothing more necessary to have in your closet during these long winter months than a coat – a protective shield to keep you from becoming part of Iowa’s frozen landscape. With so many options to choose from, it can be hard to decide which style is for you. So, here is a layout of the latest in outerwear and the pros and cons of each.
1
The Teddy Bear Coat
For those who love warm and fuzzy, this coat is the one for you. As of recently, the teddy bear coat has sprung up everywhere at retailers ranging from Nordstrom to Walmart. People can’t seem to get enough. Pros: Both the inside and outside of the coat are lined with soft, plush fabric that is warm and stylish, with the comfort level of pajamas. This coat is versatile. It can be worn out with a pair of jeans or keep you comfy on the couch while watching your favorite Christmas movie. Cons: With such a fuzzy and soft fabric, it is not the best choice for facing the snow or rain because it is not waterproof. These coats are available at all price points, but depending on the retailer and quality you’re searching for, prices can get fairly high.
Lately, belts have been used to embellish anything from dresses and skirts to handbags. A belt can be the perfect way to dress up your winter coat while also giving you a more defined figure under all those layers. Pros: The belt can be worn with items other than the coat, and it can serve as a focal point by dressing up your outfit. Cons: This style of coat can wrinkle the clothing worn underneath if the belt is pulled too tight.
2
The Belted Coat
3
The Cape Coat
If you’re tired of having to dress the same way everyday to deal with the cold, a cape coat is a warm and chic alternative. They can be embellished with buttons and a hood, or a fun pattern and pockets. Pros: These coats look chic and put together and can be layered over sweaters and turtlenecks without appearing bulky. This style offers a unique silhouette that will stand out from all the other winter coats huddled on the sidewalk. Cons: It may not offer as much warmth as a traditional coat, since most styles do not include sleeves.
Nature’s colors have begun to darken, but that doesn’t mean that your closet can’t hold onto some bright, summer colors. Color blocking is a fun way to keep your coat from looking dull by incorporating a little bit of the rainbow. Pros: The bold colors turn your coat into a statement piece, lighting up the room wherever you go. Cons: The colors in the coat may not match all of the shoes or other accessories in your closet.
5
The Tailored Minimalist Coat
4
The Color Block Coat
Double breasted overcoats aren’t just for men. The simple yet striking silhouette can make for a very chic and classic piece for a woman’s winter wardrobe. Pros: These coats give the outfit a professional and put together look, and most of them are made from wool or a wool blend, which is a very good heat insulator. Cons: Can make the shoulders appear wider, which may not flatter everyone. This style can sometimes be long, hanging at the knees or below, which could overwhelm shorter, more petite figures. All of this season’s trending coats have their own desirable, and undesirable, qualities for facing the cold. But in the end, the coat you choose to rock depends on your own personal style.
The New Ways to Shop Online: Reselling on Poshmark and Instagram Kendra Esau and Trinity Heeren
Have you ever found yourself within the walls of a Goodwill or Salvation Army? The answer to that question is probably yes, as thrifting has become a popular activity in recent years. However, have you considered the possibility that you could make a little extra cash, or even a full-time income, from selling the treasures you find within a thrift store? Reselling thrifted finds on Poshmark and Instagram have become increasingly popular money-making tactics for college students and side hustlers. Both mediums have their similarities and differences, and they both cater to different audiences. Here’s what to know about these platforms, whether you’re looking to get into the business or just curious about where to find a good pair of mom jeans. POSHMARK Poshmark is “a digital marketplace where people from the United States can buy and sell new or used clothing, shoes and accessories.” According to brit.co, the most indemand items and brands on Poshmark vary across the country. However, some of the most popular brands on Poshmark right now are Free People, Lululemon, Everlane, Patagonia and any of the brands sold at Anthropologie. These brands have some things in common; they are all pretty expensive if you were to purchase them at retail price and are especially popular among younger shoppers. Poshmark is one of the most popular and successful platforms amongst resellers, and many individuals have found ways to use Poshmark as anything from a side hustle to a full-time job. One of these people is Jenna Nascheck, or @emptyhanger on Instagram. She is a top rated Poshmark seller who shares her reselling process through social media. Nascheck got her start on the app by selling her own clothes. She didn’t get the idea to begin reselling until she went to Goodwill with her friend and realized
how many amazing things you can find at the thrift store. “Know your trends,” Nascheck said when asked about her success on the platform. “Poshmark is geared towards a trendy audience and you want to provide the items they are looking for.” Another full-time Poshmark seller is Alexandra Marquez, or @thedealqueen on Instagram. She has been on the app since nearly the beginning, having signed up in 2012. One of Marquez’s biggest tips for finding success on the platform that she shared on her Youtube channel is, “decide on your store structure and inventory.” Keeping a consistent price range and aesthetic to your store helps you attract certain customers and build your brand. Other important aspects of selling on Poshmark
include making sure you know what brands have a high resale value, curating your closet for a specific target market, taking clear and simple photos that focus on the item being sold and knowing how to research items for pricing. By taking time to research the process of reselling before you jump right in, you are setting yourself up for success on the platform. INSTAGRAM Instagram isn’t just a spot for documenting your highlight reel, it’s also a platform to sell and purchase cool vintage finds. Many find this platform easier than Poshmark because you’re able to find authentic clothing while scrolling through your Instagram feed. This platform also helps develop a bond with your seller on a more personal level. You can request what pieces you would like them to search for next, and if you’re a frequent customer, they may let you get first picks before they go live with their next collections. Most people who use this platform to shop are young women looking to bring a bit of nostalgia back into the modern world. Some common things to search for on Instagram are denim jeans or shorts, vintage sweatshirts and sweaters and graphic tees. Ellie Haney is a seller on Instagram who goes by the handle denim_dolly. Most of the thrifted pieces she resells are denim items, hence the username. Her prices range between $5-$40.
“I had the idea to thrift because I’d been searching for a cute pair of Levi jean shorts but could never find them in my size or people were selling them for way too much,” Haney said. “So I went to Goodwill, found a pair of old high waisted jeans and cut them up into shorts. After that I decided there are probably other girls looking for the same thing I was.” Emily and Allison Kacer, who both run the reselling account @thriftology_1.0, started their business because they noticed that other users were charging hefty prices for thrifted items. “After we noticed this, we wanted to make an account for college and high school students to easily afford the different finds we had and not break their bank accounts,” they said. Sheldon Buss’ reselling account, @finders. keepers.co, has over 5,000 followers. She features a lot of oversized sweatshirts and sweaters during the winter and ranges prices between $30-$60. Buss first started thrifting in college because she was on a tight budget and getting tired of never finding the pieces she wanted in stores. After she starting thrifting more often, she realized that she had “a knack for finding unique pieces that looked boring on a hanger, but super cute on.” It might take some experimenting to decide which selling/buying platform is best for you; but next time you’re in the market for some new clothes or extra cash, give Poshmark or Instagram a shot.
What To Wear Where: Holiday Parties Jess Trembly
‘Tis the season for holiday parties galore! This time of year can be stressful; deadlines are approaching, the temperature is dropping and everyone is scrambling to snag the perfect gifts for their friends and family, all while staying on budget and on top of holiday affairs. Rummaging through your closet for the perfect party pieces for every event is the last thing you want to be worrying about this season. Formal Work Holiday Party A fancy work party doesn’t mean you have to choose between festive and professional. You can have your fruit cake and eat it too by opting for a velvet midi dress for a chic yet sophisticated look that is sure to impress everyone in the room. Incorporate elements of the season by pairing the dress with a gold or deep red handbag and heels to complete the look. Casual Work Holiday Party A casual work affair can be even more of a headache. It’s a balancing act; you don’t want to show up overdressed or look out of place, but you also want to look presentable with some holiday flair. Good news, it can be done– just don’t overthink it. Stick to the basics with a pair of nice high-waisted pants or classic dark-wash jeans. From there, a simple v-neck blouse or a ruffled bell-sleeve sweater will give the outfit a relaxed, but polished feel. Adding pops of green and red with accessories and jewelry will give the outfit the cheerful twinkle you need to dazzle your coworkers.
Family Holiday Party There’s nothing better than getting together with family during the holidays and answering questions about how you plan to use your degree, what you want to do after graduating, whether or not you have a significant other (for the hundredth time, you don’t) and stuffing your face with homemade food- and looking good while doing it! A girly, plaid mini skirt paired with a cozy turtleneck sweater and sheer tights is always a fashionable and comfortable combo that’ll do the trick. New Year’s Eve Party Say ‘goodbye’ to 2018 and ring in the new year with your best sequins forward. That’s right, disco is not dead and New Year’s Eve is the perfect excuse to bust out a little bit of shimmer. Although it may be freezing outside, who doesn’t love a sparkly mini dress? Steal the show at your NYE night out with a silver or gold sequin slip dress and block heels, but make sure not to get out of control with the accessories, as the dress is flashy enough. Not feeling the sequins? Try a metallic jumpsuit with an ankle strap heel or the timeless little black dress.

How To Have A Productive Winter Break Emily Smith As wonderful as winter break can be with no homework, time with family and friends and sleeping in your own bed again, it is also almost an entire month of the year that is commonly wasted away with Netflix and holiday sweets. If used correctly, this time off can be both relaxing and productive, and these ideas about winter break productivity will have you jumping into the spring semester feeling fresh, ready and organized for anything that may come your way. Winter cleaning As boring or mundane as it may sound, winter break is actually a perfect time for cleaning and organizing. Often times when students come to college, the things they leave behind at home can become unorganized, forgotten about and just unnecessary due to living without it for so long. This can include clothes, shoes, accessories, decorations, books, etc. It’s amazing how many things can pile up. Going through your clothing and donating what you don’t wear is a great way to give back during the holiday season and provide nice clothing to those who can’t afford it. Coming back to school knowing your room back home is freshly organized and cleaned can put your mind at ease.
Volunteering Volunteering is a wonderful way to be productive over winter break. Since it isn’t like a job as far as time commitment goes, volunteering allows a lot of flexibility with your schedule. During winter and around Christmas-time, volunteering opportunities pop up everywhere. Check in your local paper, in the local news, with local churches and with bigger companies like Meals On Wheels to see where your community is in need of volunteers. Volunteering works as a wonderful resume builder and can help you build valuable relationships within your home community. Learn a new skill Winter break provides the perfect opportunity to learn how to do all those things you’ve been meaning to learn. This can be a fabulous time to learn how to cook a famous family recipe, how to play a variety of card games or how to play a new sport. Since winter break holds so much free time, it provides the perfect time to learn skills that will lead to new passions and may prove useful in the future.
Create a workout routine Pick up your parents’ gym membership card or try a new home workout. With all of the holiday sweets and relaxation going on over break, it can be easy to forget about maintaining a healthy exercise routine. At school it’s easier to get exercise walking around campus all the time, but home can be different. Take this free time to learn what works for your body and what kinds of workouts you like best. Test out yoga, go for a run in the brisk weather, hit the elliptical at the gym or buy a few weights and learn a new circuit. Building these healthy habits can carry you into spring semester glowing and feeling invigorated. Take a small road trip With the lack of obligations you have over winter break, planning a small road trip can be a great way to spend some quality time with your friends or family. Pick out a neat city or attraction within a few hours of your hometown, pack some snacks and take a few days during your break to explore a new place. This can be a great way to catch up with friends that don’t go to your same school. Update your resume As mundane as it may sound, spending time mapping out all of your resume-building experiences can be beneficial for the upcoming spring semester. An updated resume is great to have on-hand for career fairs, internship or job applications and volunteering opportunities. To go even further, research some resume-building
opportunities in your area and add them to the final resume you bring back to school with you. Start a blog Having a blog can be a valuable experience and can open up opportunities and ideas that build skills for a future career. Blogs can be used professionally or for fun and can help you learn new things such as writing skills, web design and photography. Blog about traveling, your activities and
passions, or your education and career path. A blog can also serve as a platform for showing off these skills in internships, jobs and other future endeavors. Apply for scholarships As simple as it may sound, taking some time to apply for scholarships over winter break can pay off in the long run, and your future self will thank you. College is an expensive time with tuition, apartments, food and fun activities, and it can be overwhelming for students to keep up financially.
Setting aside time during break to look up scholarship opportunities and filling out applications can benefit you in the future and free up some financial space to take some stress away. Create a college bucket list Lastly, winter break
can be the perfect time to create a college bucket list. No matter where you’re at in your college career, there are probably things you want to experience while in college, and writing them down in an organized list can be a great way to stay on track. Think of all of the places on campus you want to explore, restaurants you want to try or clubs you want to look into.
A Guide to Healthier Fast Food Dining in Ames Rachel Cessna
Fast food is well-known for its speedy service and calorie-packed menu, but you probably wouldn’t associate it with being healthy. College students have busy schedules which can make it hard to avoid rushing through a drive-thru between classes. However, eating fast doesn’t always mean you have to pack on the carbs. Take a look at some of the alternatives to your usual quick picks. Chick-fil-A Chicken sandwich: This is what Chick-fil-A is famous for. It’s a simple fried chicken filet with pickles on a buttered bun. While it tastes great, the calories and carbs add up quickly. Alternative: Instead, try the eight-count grilled chicken nuggets. Saving you up to 300 calories, these nuggets can satisfy your hunger without making you feel guilty. If grilled chicken sounds too bland, order some of the many sauces Chick-fil-A offers to use for dipping. McDonald’s Big Mac: Health is probably one of the last things you think about when ordering a Big Mac. With all the ingredients, like the extra bun, you can forget about having a well-balanced meal. Alternative: It may not tower as tall as the Big Mac, but a McDouble can satisfy your burger craving without
overdoing it. This lighter option has less calories and carbs, and if you want to knock those down a little more, try taking off the bun. Just make sure you have access to a knife and fork if you don’t want to get messy.
the calories of the Quesarito Combo and include ingredients such as grilled chicken, black beans and pico de gallo. When choosing a drink, stick to water or unsweetened iced tea to avoid any extra sugar.
Taco Bell Quesarito Combo: While one or two tacos won’t overload you, the same can’t be said for
Panda Express Orange Chicken with Fried Rice: Orange Chicken may be a popular choice at Panda Express, but you may not realize just how many calories there are in a bowl with fried rice. Not to mention the high carbs and sodium– definitely not a dietfriendly meal. Alternative: Try the Grilled Teriyaki Chicken with White Steamed Rice. This choice gives you protein, rice and mixed vegetables with no frying involved. While it may not stand up to the other alternatives on this list, hopefully it satisfies your Panda cravings without giving you the same post-meal guilt as the orange chicken. Some days you might not have time to go home and make a health-conscious lunch, or you might just be craving a bite from your favorite fast food joint. It may be tempting to order that fried chicken or that tasty looking burger, but if you swap it for a healthier alternative once in a while you might just find a new favorite meal.
Taco Bell’s combos. With a quesarito, taco and a soft drink, you could be consuming over half of the recommended calories per day with just one meal. Alternative: Not everything at Taco Bell comes wrapped in a tortilla. Their Power Bowls are a great way to fill up with nutrients and still have that Taco Bell flavor. They have less than half of
5 Tips to Having the Best Black Friday Haul Taylor Gage
Black Friday shopping can be thrilling, fun, stressful – or maybe a little bit of all three. Between finding the perfect holiday gift for that special someone, discovering the hidden gem in a $5 and under bin and racing to get that last big ticket item, there is a lot to think about before heading out on your late night shopping excursion. To have the most success on your next Black Friday shopping trip, try following the five steps below. Do research. Looking into potential stores and the great deals they’re offering is essential to thriving on Black Friday. Perusing ads and online sites to see which stores will have the items you are hoping to purchase is the best way to be ensure you’ll get a chance to buy them. Usually these ads come out the week before Thanksgiving. By knowing which stores carry each desired item, you will be able to compare prices and form a plan B if needed. You will also know which stores to hit early if it is an item that will be in high demand. Check your social media. Many retailers these days post their newest deals on their social media
pages, and according to an article from consumerreports.org, there may be incentive to “like” those retailers’ pages. “Retailers will often reward customers who like or follow them with special alerts to Black Friday discounts and incentives,” the article says. You may also have friends or followers on social media who will post the various deals that they are finding. Bring your friends. When it comes to family and friends, it is always best to bring people you’re close with on your Black Friday journey. Whether you are planning to divide and conquer or just want to have fun as a group, you will never regret bringing extra hands. One strategy is to send your friends or family members to different stores so that you almost guarantee getting the best deals. You can send each member with a list of the important items and pick a time and place to meet for breakfast and catch up on each person’s haul. Another method would be to stick together and use all the eyes to catch the deals in every store. The memories you make together will be more valuable than anything you could buy.
Create a budget… and follow it. I know, what a way to kill the fun of Black Friday – but if you are in it to buy some big ticket items it is important to know what you can afford. According to an article from Bestblackfriday.com, “In the early stages of your planning process, it is vital that you take a look at your own personal income and expenses. Doing this can allow you to calculate a figure on what you can afford to spend this year and how much leeway you have with this number.” By creating a budget before heading out, there is no need to stress about the money you are spending because you know you have it. Fuel up. While preparing for the long night ahead of you it is important to remember to eat a good meal before, and pack snacks! The last thing you need during your extensive shopping is a hangry outbreak by one of your family members or yourself. Maybe your meal of choice is Thanksgiving dinner leftovers, or maybe it is your favorite fast food restaurant – no matter what it is, fill up to avoid any necessary drama and to help yourself stay focused.
Simple Changes to Make to Slay Your Finals Megan Hellman
The countdown to finals is on, and with that comes the overwhelming process of studying. You may be stressing about the all-nighters you’ll have to pull to ace those tests, but you don’t have to. As it turns out, you can study more efficiently simply by adjusting the environment around you and using sensory-association tactics. These improvements to your study routine will leave you feeling prepared, focused and stress-free. The most important aspect of efficient studying is your surroundings. This either improves the quality of learning or hinders it, and unfortunately most students overlook it. The most important rule to remember is to always differentiate between your study spots and relaxation or eating spots. The brain makes associations between places and activities; by studying in bed, for example, the association between “bed” and “sleep” is disrupted. This not only results in restless sleep, but poor quality of studying as well. Instead, find a couple easily accessible spots and dedicate them to studying and homework. If you’re getting tired of the library, explore campus to find other study spots that work well for you. Finding an area that you can associate purely with schoolwork is only one part of the puzzle. Changing the environment around you to meet your preferences is the next step. The most obvious change is comfort; the more comfortable you are while working, the more efficient you’ll be. This doesn’t mean grab your snuggie and jump into the recliner, but instead adjust your workspace so that it encourages good posture. This way, you’re not distracted
by a stooped back or uncomfortable aches. Going along with comfort, keep temperature in mind so you don’t have to sit through long study sessions while shivering or sweating. It’s also important to remember to remove unnecessary clutter from your workspace to limit distractions. For a more scientific approach, incorporating the following sensoryassociation tricks related to sight and smell will improve the outcome of your work time. Surround yourself with warm colors like orange and yellow to help you feel more energized, creative and active. Cooler colors like light green and blue will help restore a feeling of relaxation and peace. This association comes in handy when stress begins to distract from your studies. A good way to do this is by changing the background on your computer or hanging posters that include these colors. Natural light also produces a similar effect as cool colors. Additionally, subtle smells like lemon, lavender and peppermint can improve focus and concentration. While sight and smell tactics are helpful, sound associations have an even higher influence. One specific sound – classical music – has been shown to improve several categories, like retention, absorption and consolidation of information. Listening to relaxing classical music for five minutes before hitting the books prepares the brain to become receptive to information. Movement five of Julie Giroux’s “Bookmarks from Japan” and Claude Debussy’s “Deux Arabesques” are a couple options. While learning new information, switch to a more energetic piece such as Tchaikovsky’s “Concerto No. 1.” If you’re reviewing material, passive classical helps to store and consolidate that information. Some great choices are Corelli’s “Concerti Grossi,” Option 6, No. 2 and Handel’s “The Water Music.” For more
music suggestions, visit http://www. rocketmemory.com/articles/music-andstudying/. If music leaves you more distracted than focused, find a spot with light background noise, like a café. College students are notorious for having all-night study sessions and stressful weeks leading up to finals, but now you can avoid these by finding a space to dedicate solely to school work, transforming it to meet your preferences and including sensory associations. Now, you can spend less time studying and more time with friends and family over the holidays.

Trend For Men
More than Just a Beard Cinestie Olson
There is a recurring trend every November where people put down their razor, set aside the shaving cream and embrace the natural growth of their hair. That’s right, No-Shave November is among us. Society has gotten so caught up in the appearances of scruffy faces and patchy mustaches that the real meaning of No-Shave November has been shrugged off. So, what is the meaning behind No-Shave November besides just skipping out on grooming? To help jog our memories, Jet Appling, the director of fundraising initiatives for NoShave November, explained the meaning behind the trend. Many people participate in NoShave November without knowing what cause they are doing it for. What is the meaning behind No-Shave November? There are a lot of people who choose not to shave for the month of November without donating to this fundraiser. We try to discourage this because if anyone is using the NoShave November name to profit without donating proceeds, we reach out to them to make sure we’re on the same page. The
Matthew Hill Foundation is a non-profit and No-Shave November is our biggest annual fundraiser. What are the positives to not shaving for an entire month? What are the negatives? The goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. One of the positives is to feel free as we let it grow for the month. What are the negatives? Some people get unbearable itchiness when they don’t shave. Therefore, some have chosen not to
participate. It’s important to mention that No-Shave November is inclusive of all genders dropping the razor, although most of our key demographic are males ages
25-35. If someone isn’t one to not shave for an entire month, what is another way to raise awareness and support your cause? We have a few partners/sponsors this year. Supporting them will help them support us. Edible Arrangements offers $1 donations for every chocolate
covered pineapple mustache pop sold (up to $5,000). Infinite CBD makes the official beard oil of No-Shave November for this year’s campaign. Shave.net will be donating up to thirty percent of products sold through the end of November to No-Shave November. Otherwise, people can always donate directly through our website, whether they’ve stopped shaving or not. What is the story behind No-Shave November? Where did it originate from? No-Shave November started as a Facebook page in 2009 in memory of Matthew Hill, who passed away from colorectal cancer only two years earlier. His children started No-Shave November as a fundraiser. Where can we find more information about No-Shave November? Our story about who we are and what we do can be located at www.NoShave.org. If you’ve ever participated in NoShave November or you plan to, don’t forget the meaning behind it. You may be experiencing the freedom of not shaving, but you are also raising awareness for cancer patients who don’t have the option.
Kill the Chill: How To Stay Warm AND Stylish This Fall Isaiah Sents
Layering clothing has been around in one form or another for hundreds of years, dating back to ancient times. The modern suit, one of the most iconic forms of dress, incorporates layering as a vital part of its structure. For example, the suit is usually made up of two to three layers – a shirt, often a waistcoat or vest and a jacket. But layering is not limited to formal and traditional ways of dressing. This stylistic technique can be applied in almost every situation, especially during this time of year. As temperatures drop, it can be hard to stay on trend and warm at the same time – at a certain point, wearing only one warm shirt won’t be enough to keep out the chill. How could a person solve this problem? Layering. Layering provides warmth by trapping air between layers, and can be even warmer than a single garment of a comparable weight. The additional garments can provide added visual interest through textures, colors and patterns. And anyway, why limit yourself to just one outfit when you can wear multiple at once? There are a few pieces of clothing that are important to have on hand for layering. A denim jacket or similar piece made out of a hard-wearing material with a classic silhouette is a must have, both to keep out the breeze and to cap the look.
Cardigans and sweaters are also important to have around, and even though they may be made out of similar materials, they are usually worn in different ways. Cardigans are generally more relaxed and are often worn oversized, while sweaters are usually more conservatively styled and go well with button-downs, suits, blazers, etc. Flannels and other button-up shirts are vital, and can be partially buttoned under a jacket to ensure they stay visible. When left completely unbuttoned, the edges of the shirt can get caught on the layer above and be swallowed. Finally, the most important layer is arguably the bottom. This first layer is most often a lightweight tee or other shirt, and it sets the tone for all the other pieces to build off of. There are a number of strategies to keep in mind when building a layered look. The first layer should be the thinnest. If a room gets hot, and the first layer is a heavy sweater, the wearer is fresh out of luck. Putting the warmest or thickest layer on the outside will provide the most control over body temperature and comfort. Varying style elements like structure and texture is a surefire way to catch the eye.
