WESTERN GOES FROM FUNCTION TO FASHION FASHION LAUREN HUMPHREYS
From thigh-high cowboy boots to doubledenim suits, it’s easy to see why wearing traditional Western pieces with a modern flare is this season’s most popular fashion trend. Major influencers like Lil Nas X and Kacey Musgraves continue to inspire the fashion community to embrace the cowboy aesthetic while also making it wearable. It seems effortless when a celebrity or influencer is spotted sporting this trend, but for an average college student it may be more out of their comfort zone. However, there’s a variety of Westernwear styles you can easily incorporate into your everyday wardrobe. Currently, there are primarily two Western trends: the Y2k, a space cowboy look, and the classic prairie look, both of which can fit into anyone’s personal style. If you’re trying to achieve the Y2k, simply add a cowboy hat or a pair of boots to a sparkly dress or top. To take it to the next level, throw on a fringe jacket and embellished boots. The goal is to look sophisticated, yet still have some fun “yee-haw” elements. The classic Western style is all about texture, so when going for this look, reach for suede, leather, denim and corduroy pieces. Because this trend is often more minimalistic and monochromatic,
choose one piece or color as your statement and keep the rest of the outfit simple. A bolo tie, giant belt buckle or bandana can make perfect accessories to complete either of these western looks. You can also wear them with any outfit if you want to add just a subtle cowboy/girl touch. Although Western style has been prominent for utilitarian uses for most of America’s history, it has just recently become popular in mainstream style. As more people travel and move to the West, this aesthetic influences a broader population that is transforming these pieces from functional to fashionable. “Utah residents have always dressed in a western style because that’s what best fits their lifestyle,” said Jena Falbogart, a camp manager at Zion National Park in Utah. “A majority of our guests normally buy some kind of western clothing before they leave to remember their time here. Western style is nostalgic and it’s interesting to see people turning it into a fashion trend.”

FASHION FOUR POP CULTURE INSPIRED HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
2019 has been a memorable year so far in terms of pop culture, with iconic movie and music releases such as “Avengers Endgame” and Billie Eilish’s “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” Don’t forget about all of the outrageous celeb looks that graced the pink carpet at this year’s Camp-themed Met Gala. With a year jam-packed with culture-defining moments and looks, it only makes sense to pull from these highlights for some Halloween costume inspiration. 1. “Stranger Things” Season three of “Stranger Things” premiered on Netflix in July and became an instant hit. The show offers a vast array of costume options: for those whose favorite characters are Steve and/or Robin, you could wear a simple Scoops Ahoy ice cream shop uniform. Or recreate a look from a specific character, such as Eleven’s bold paint splatter button-up and suspenders combination. 2. “Friends” nostalgia 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the premiere of the cult-classic show “Friends.” As 90s style continues to dominate the fashion trends of today, a costume inspired by the looks from the earlier seasons may be in order to make a statement. “I believe the most creative costumes this year are going to be based on movies and shows from different times since the fashion of the 80s and 90s are coming back into play,” said Lacey Westberg, a junior majoring in event management.
3. J. LO in the green Versace dress In September, Jennifer Lopez made waves when she closed Versace’s Milan Fashion Week show wearing the iconic green cut-out dress she sported at the 42nd Grammys in 2000. The internet practically buzzed with excitement at the throwback to the famous look, and several outlets wrote stories about her appearance the dress. The renewed hype surrounding this look makes it a great option for someone looking to make a fashion statement this Halloween. 4. VSCO girls If you’re looking for an effortless costume choice this Halloween, you can’t go wrong with a VSCO girl costume. This cultural phenomenon has several recognizable characteristics that can be quickly made into a last-minute costume. When choosing accessories for the ensemble, there are multiple options – a wrist full of scrunchies, a Hydroflask with a metal straw to hold your beverage, a Kånken backpack, a puka shell necklace and socks and sandals. As for the actual outfit, head to your closet and grab an oversized t-shirt with a simple pair of shorts, which is commonly known as a typical VSCO girl’s uniform. These four ideas are only a small sample of the costumes you can dream up. There are many other creative ideas from this year’s pop culture you could create. If none of these float your boat, break out your phone, open Twitter and get inspired for Halloween 2019.
Many of the costume elements you would need for this nostalgic look can be found in the current trends of today, such as mom jeans, scrunchies and overalls. .15

ON THE ROAD BEAUTY ESSENTIALS BEAUTY JACLYN FRAISE
We all know how stressful packing can be – having absolutely everything ready to go before the suitcase is zipped for good can take up to hours of planning. The biggest and most common mistake? Overpacking. We know everyone loves having options. However, when it comes to planning your beauty bag, sticking with only the absolute essentials can save you from cleaning up a potentially very expensive mess (literally or theoretically) caused by spilling them everywhere or getting lost along the way. The key is to stick with versatile products that have multiple uses. The less you have to remember, the better. While going through the packing process, plan your looks ahead of time to help pack as minimally as possible. Here are the go-to, absolutely cannot-livewithout beauty essentials you need for any road trip. Concealer Concealer is a life saver while traveling (hello, touch ups). This one product can be used in several ways. You can highlight certain areas of your face for a more sculpted and put-together look, or you can hide your under-eye bags after a long day of travel for a more natural effect. Powder After putting on your cream products (tinted moisturizer, foundation, concealer and creamy
bronzer), it’s crucial to set them with a powder, especially if you’re traveling to a warmer climate. Many brands now offer travel-sized products, which makes it that much easier to carry your favorite powder in your makeup bag. Looking for another way to utilize your powder while traveling? Powder by itself can also create a blurring effect to help minimize the look of pores, brighten up certain areas or blend together an uneven skin tone, which can easily develop from the stress of travel. Bronzer Bronzer has the potential to be the most versatile product in someone’s makeup bag. It can be used to set foundation and concealer, create that sun kissed look and works well as an eyeshadow. Mascara Mascara is a ride-or-die packing essential. Not only does it make your lashes longer and more voluminous, it doesn’t take much effort to reapply when you’re in a hurry and on the move all day. Lips Packing a drugstore Chapstick, shimmery gloss or bold lipstick can easily complete any look while on the go. Whatever you prefer – matte, satin or glossy – the finish is up to you. This product is also compact, making easy to toss in your bag.

BEAUTY GET READY GUIDE: ZOMBIE BAR CRAWL
Spooky season is upon us, which means the stress of putting together the perfect costume is here, too. Luckily, if you’re planning on taking part in ISU tradition by attending the annual Zombie Bar Crawl, we’ve got you covered for creating the perfect zombie-inspired look. The Classic White-Tee Grab that old white tee in the back of your closet and get crafting! This can easily be done in less than a minute by taking a pair of scissors and simply cutting slits in the shirt to give it that “zombie effect.” For extra spooky effects, pick up some fake blood at the convenience store closest to you and simply drizzle it across the tee. If you want even more of an effortless option, use a deep red lipstick or shadow. Make it personal Looking to win best zombie costume this year at the bar crawl? Make your look personal and unique to who you are! If you’re studying in the culinary field, throw on a chef apron and cover it in fake blood. Health major? Personalize it with a pair of scrubs or bring a stethoscope for humor. This can be done in many ways – don’t be afraid to get creative! Play the part with zombie makeup Step 1. Apply base makeup, including foundation (choose a shade lighter than your skin tone – the goal is to look less alive), concealer, powder, eye primer and eyebrows. Step 2. Darken your cheekbones by applying an excessive amount of dark-shaded bronzer or a black-
tinted eyeshadow and blending sufficiently. Grab your favorite palette and find deep greens and greys to make yourself look more eerie. Step 3. To create dead zombie eyes, start by blending a combination of black, purple and blue eyeshadow on your lid and up to your crease to create a hollowedout effect. Apply the shadow under your eyes to create the illusion of prominent eye bags. You can also use red eyeshadow to create wounds and cuts on your face. Step 4. Outline the lower lash line by applying dark eyeliner and smudging it outward. You can also use eyeliner to define your drawn-on cuts to make them pop. Top it off with bold lashes for a bit of glamour. Step 5. Apply black, red or nude lipstick, depending on the look you’re going for. Step 6. Pull everything together by adding special effects for a dramatic look. Use colors like black, purple and green to create natural looking bruises and scars across your face and neck. Squeeze a few drops of fake blood in your hand and place it around your mouth to achieve an accurate transformation. Finish off the look with a simple hairstyle To complete your Halloween look, style your hair in whatever fashion feels the most comfortable for you. If you’re wanting to go with an easier option, tease the hair with a small comb to get a messy effect. Finish it off with hairspray to keep it in place for a night of fun! .25

EVERYDAY PIECES TO CREATE YOUR HALLOWEEN LOOKS
With October in full swing, college students are starting to prepare for arguably the best weekend of the year. Halloween weekend (also known as Halloweekend) is all about having fun and making memories, but another undeniably important element is who or what you decide to go as. Some Halloween fanatics have been contemplating their costumes since the beginning of fall, but if you’ve been putting off the costume hunt until now, don’t stress. Adam Bodenham, junior in aerospace engineering, said he mainly struggles with creating a costume for two reasons: not wanting to spend money and putting it off until the last minute. “It’s different when you have a girlfriend, because then they plan everything and you have nothing to worry about,” he said. “When you’re single, it just kind of slips your mind until it is too late.” If you want to save money and time while still getting into the spooky spirit, here are four simple Halloween costumes that any guy can pull off.
a nice five o’clock shadow to complete the look. If you don’t have the hair au natural, dust some dark eyeshadow or cocoa powder onto you face in the general shape of a beard. Where’s Waldo? This next idea takes minimal effort and can easily be found at your local department store or Halloween outlet. With a red and white striped shirt, a red and white stocking cap and circular glasses, you will instantly transform yourself into the beloved “Where’s Waldo?” character. All you need to finish off the costume is a pair of jeans and sneakers. Decade dressing The best part about decade dressing is the multiple possibilities. You could easily dress as a Greaser from the 50s just by throwing on jeans, a white t-shirt, Converse and a leather jacket. Finish it off with some slicked-back hair, and you are ready to cruise the town. You could pick any decade and dress to that style – 70s disco, 80s rocker and 90s punk are just a few potential ideas. All of the above make for a groovy costume that could probably be pulled out of your closet.
The lumberjack Most of the items you need to create this look you probably already own, making it a cheap and effortless option. Simply grab a flannel, jeans (or cut-offs if you really want to get fancy), some Timberland boots and a stocking hat. Don’t forget

HOW TO PACK LIKE A MINIMALIST LIFESTYLE HANNAH MORROW
Whether you’re preparing for a weekend getaway or a luxury vacation, life is a lot easier if you pack light. However, sometimes it’s difficult to resist bringing all of your pairs of jeans “just in case.” Packing all of your items in one suitcase can be tough. Here are a few ideas on how to stay organized and travel comfortably on your next excursion. Tip 1: Take the basics When you’re packing for a long trip, obviously it’s essential that you bring along the essentials! If you pack basics, you will be able to create many different looks that take up minimal space. These items can include a plain white t-shirt, blue or black jeans, a jean jacket, a sweater and a flannel. Tip 2: Staple, then statement After packing the basics, add a few statement pieces into your suitcase. These items will add variation to your wardrobe and you’ll be able to better express your personal style. Although they might take up extra room, it will be worth it when you are slaying the day. Tip 3: Roll your items If you know that your destination has a steamer or an iron, try rolling your clothes instead of folding them. This will save a lot of room in your suitcase and allow you to pack more items. Tip 4: Suitcase size matters Different airlines have specific bag requirements when it comes to a carry-on. If you’re traveling with
United Airlines or American Airlines, you can bring a carry on that is 22x14x9 inches. With Southwest Airlines your carry on bag must be under 24x16x10 inches. Before takeoff, check your airline’s website and make sure your bag fits the standards. Tip 5: Travel-sized toiletries You would be wasting a lot of room in your suitcase if you packed full-sized toiletries. If you are trying to stay organized and pack light, it may be worth it to invest in some mini toiletries. Stores like Target carry a wide variety such as mini mouthwash, deodorant shampoo, conditioner, and hairspray. Tip 6: Utilize your shoes Claire Griner, a freshman studying public relations and a frequent traveler, said she utilizes her shoes when packing her suitcase. “Use the space inside your shoes to hide important jewelry or valuable items,” Griner said. “By putting ring boxes, medicine, etcetera in your clean socks and shoving them into your shoes, you not only safe space, but you keep things protected.” Packing a suitcase for your next trip will be a breeze if you stay organized and pack smart. Don’t forget to leave a little space for souvenirs or purchases you might make while away. Safe travels!

LIFESTYLE ROAD TRIP INSPIRED SPOOKY PODCASTS
Violin tremolos and the spooky dialogue that’s usually associated with horror movies is now arguably just as much of a hallmark trait in suspenseful podcasts. Because this medium allows the listener to feel fully immersed in the stories being told by the interviewers and interviewees, one could even say movies are no longer the best way to do scary storytelling. When road tripping to haunted houses, corn mazes or pumpkin patches this fall, consider listening to some spooky podcasts to get you into the spirit (And hopefully not conjure any real spirits.). “As funny as it sounds, I like to listen to podcasts because they make me feel less lonely,” said Victoria ReynaRodriguez, a sophomore studying journalism and women and gender studies. “At times, it’s like you’re having a conversation with the host. If you’re listening to a podcast on a topic you’re super interested in, it’s easy to feel like you’re being talked to rather than talked at.” There are multiple podcasts to choose from that revolve around chilling stories that are meant to spook listeners and make them feel as if they were watching a horror film without having to sit in the same place for two hours. “I’ve always been a big scaredy cat, so I despised horror movies when I was younger,” Reyna-Rodriguez said. “Although I still get more scared than most, I have recently found myself becoming a fiend for anything horror related.”
October, as it tells non-fiction scary stories that make you feel like you’re sitting around a campfire at night. Episodes range from 20-30 minutes long, making them easy to listen to while driving. “My Favorite Murder” allows listeners to interact with the hosts by submitting stories of hometown murders as well as their favorite murder stories. The hosts pick apart each murder story in gruesome detail and offer their opinions. “Something Scary” tells stories listeners likely heard when they were younger.. Hosts share urban legends, folktales and ghost stories. Episode topics range from narratives from other countries to twisted fairytales. On the podcast “Serial,”investigative journalist Sarah Koenig dives into cases that have confusing endings. With three seasons, listeners can choose between three different cases and feel as though they’re with Sarah the entire time, interviewing various sources, exploring the case and learning new facts throughout each episode. The podcast is chilling and definitely leaves listeners questioning everyday motives. “I like horror because I feel like it’s one of the most creative genres,” Reyna-Rodriguez said. “You have to be really good at it to get it right without being cheesy or overdoing it, so I admire that most people involved in creating in the horror genre are truly dedicated to it. Halloween is also my favorite holiday, so of course I like all things spooky.”
