STYLE - THE BACHELOR IN COLLEGE LIFE - REDISCOVERING HOROSCOPES FOR YOURSELF - THE HISTORY OF CHARCUTERIE

THE BACHELOR IN COLLEGE LIFE By Hannah Scott Everyone idolizes a love story, but what happens when that story becomes broadcasted for millions to see? “The Bachelor” has offered individuals a look inside the wild world of dating with a reality show spin and allows escapism for many individuals, college students included. The burning question is: why has the show become such a phenomenon? “The Bachelor,” a show that began on March 25th, 2002 and has since amassed an impressive 24 seasons has allowed its viewers to root for love for almost two decades. The show attracts demographics of all ages, however the most popular is without a doubt those between 18-49 years old. Within that demographic, there is a certain group that has created a true community around the show and its contestants: college students. For some, the appeal is all about the drama and suspense of who will get the final rose, while for others it is simply about allowing time for friends to get together and relax. “I love watching ‘The Bachelor’ because there is so much happening, the drama is crazy,” said Presley Polvere, a sophomore in public relations.

1

Meghan McCarey, a sophomore in kinesiology and health gave another perspective, “I personally enjoy watching it because it is when I get to set aside time to hang out with my best friends. We love to poke fun at it but are also always rooting for that one person at the end.”

While the appeal of the show may seem simple at first, getting to watch a love story and competition all in one, the true meaning may be deeper than some understand. “I think ‘The Bachelor’ appeals so much to college kids because we are similar ages to some of the female contestants, but our lives are so different, McCarey said. Dating in college can be difficult and seeing the process shown as relatively easy and straightforward can be incredibly enticing. The bachelors in the show often give the contestants large and romantic gestures that can be rare in real life and dating usually doesn’t include producers behind the scenes articulating various moves the men or women make. “I think ‘The Bachelor’ shows how ‘easy’ dating can seem, but there are a lot of things cut out of the show that wouldn’t be cut out in real life dating,” Polvere said. “Some people are expecting grand gestures in real life like those that occur on the show; but if we’re being realistic that just isn’t it,” McCarey said. “Instead of going on a trip to Peru or staying in a Fantasy Suite, we go to fraternity formals and shack up. Dating in the real world just isn’t as pretty as they make it out on the show.”

Even so, the show allows an escape into a world many of us could only dream about. When you are making ends meet on a college student budget it can be nice to fantasize that life could one day look like it does on the show. In some ways, it can offer individuals high hopes no matter how unrealistic they may ultimately be. “I think with a large part of the audience being college students, we usually aren’t able to afford to go on extravagant trips with someone we just met a few weeks ago,” McCarey said. “Although there is some part of us that wants that to happen, it’s usually too unrealistic. I find it a nice fantasy to live though.” Ultimately, “The Bachelor” gives college students a mental break from every part of their day to day routine. For an hour out of a day individuals can worry about who will get the first place position instead of what due dates are approaching or cramming for a difficult midterm. Watching the show to most people is all in good fun, but remembering the difference between reality and fiction is always an important concept to grasp. “I personally think the show is entertaining and funny to watch since it seems so staged and fake, it’s a fun way to pretend I’m out of the cold of Ames,” McCarey said. “I think it is a good form of entertainment since we continue to gather around a television for hours on Monday nights.”

REDISCOVERING HOROSCOPES FOR YOURSELF By Zack Brown

February -

The month of love, romance and cheap chocolates. The month that couples long for and the month that singles dread. It can be challenging to navigate this month as a single person, or even someone who is in a complicated relationship. Our modern-day culture is constantly changing, and with it-- people are constantly changing too. Love is complicated and can be confusing, but it can also be a beautiful thing if you’re with the right person. Finding the “one” in today’s age can be a difficult journey, but with the right guidance and tools, it’s not impossible. There has been an inpouring group of young people turning to horoscopes to give them the relationship advice that they have been seeking. Apps like Co-Star are making horoscopes more accessible and easy for people to understand with any type of knowledge over the subject. Some horoscopes can be very vague, and they don’t always line up with who you really are as a person.

5

It’s sometimes hard to conform to the basic ideology of horoscopes, and they might not always give you the answers that you’re searching for. Sometimes the horoscopes can be not quite what we actually want based off of our zodiac signs, so here is a list of common needs and wants that most people search for in a relationship, and which sign can best give you what you want. Adventure/excitement: If you’re a person who yearns for an adventure or a spontaneous partner, then you might be attracted to an Aries, Sagittarius or a Gemini. Aries, Saggitarius’ and Geminis are people who feel the need to always have excitement in their lives and will want a partner who reciprocates the excitement for pursuing a life that they have as well. Emotional intimacy: While some people search for spontaneity, some people search for a partner who likes to stay home, cuddle, watch movies and express their feelings to each other. If this is attractive to you-- then you’re best suited with a Cancer, Taurus, Scorpio or a Pisces. These signs take emotional intimacy seriously, and they’re looking for a partner who is also loving, caring and nurturing. Intellectuality: If you’re a person who is attracted to a partner who is knowledgeable and smart, then you should look no further than an Aquarius or a Virgo. Aquarius’ and Virgos are people who seek intellectual intimacy and need a partner who will pro vide them long and in-depth conversations about the future and big ideas.

the best possible experience for their partner. Hard-to-get: Some people aren’t attracted to people who like to “settle down” and prefer those who are “hard-to-get” or people who like to take their time with finding the right partner for them. If this is attractive to you, then you’re attracted to Aries, Virgos, Libras and Capricorns. All of these signs are usually ones to take things slow before getting into anything serious, but once they settle-down, they tend to be committed to that partner for a very long time. Passionate: If you’re attracted to people who are passionate-- whether that be about themselves, other people or anything in general-- then you’re attracted to Leos, Scorpios, Geminis and Aries. These signs will provide a great deal of passion for any relationship. Leos are extremely passionate about themselves and will need to be made the center of a relationship, so if you’re wanting to please somebody for the rest of your life, you’re attracted to a Leo. A lot goes into relationships, and there are many more redeeming qualities to people than the main ones that I pointed out. Navigating the dating world can be a challenge for a lot of people, and horoscopes are one of the many ways that can guide you to find that special someone that is out there waiting for you. Every zodiac sign has something wonderful to offer to every relationship, so be open to new people and new ideas, and get out there and find your soulmate.

Honesty and integrity: Honesty and integrity is a big part of any relationship but the Aquarius, Scorpio, Taurus and Cancer make these the main priority in a relationship. They value honesty and communication, and they want to provide 6

HISTORY OF CHARCUTERIE By Arabella Hau

The art of charcuterie is considered by many to be an outlet for culinary creativity. It’s complete with a variety of flavors and textures to choose from to make your charcuterie experience an experience to remember. In general terms, it can be described as the preparation of a variety of meats for presentations in diverse ways and purposes.

Aside from describing the shop that sells them in France, charcuterie is commonly used today as a staple appetizer, a starter course for formal occasions or a light meal while entertaining guests.

It’s no coincidence that the popularity of charcuterie boards and their frequent appearance at get-togethers correlates significantly with the ease of According to “Food and Wine”, the word preparation. DRESS

WHAT IF IT’S TOO MUCH? Regardless of whether or not you are stuck in the pants-wearing zone or wear a dress every day, it’s hard not to admit that they are comfortable. After all, it’s one item, and they provide the base for your outfit. For those of us who don’t dress up every day, it can seem daunting. Everyone fears to hear “Wow, what are you all fancied up for?” from an unsuspecting acquaintance, and your outfit choices can be especially high pressure on a first date. But dresses aren’t for your next job interview or for dressing fancy. “Dresses are an easy way to look cute and professional while still feeling comfortable,” Tracie-Lynn Lamoreux, senior studying psychology, said, wearing a light-blue button-down dress reminiscent of spring, curled up in a soft grey cardigan. Lamoreux said the dresses are a wardrobe staple for her, even when trying to achieve a relaxed look.

LAYERING T-shirts Rule No. 1 of winter to spring transition is layering your wardrobe. You can take out a cute, strappy dress sequestered to the back of your wardrobe for winter and find a long sleeve t-shirt. Depending on the shirt, it can change your look entirely - by keeping it simple with a black or white turtleneck, or making it a little more fun with a bright color. To get a little edgier, add stripes. Cardigans and sweaters “If I’m wearing a nicer dress, I’ll usually throw on a soft cardigan to dress it down,” Lamoreux said. Pairing a cotton cardigan with a dress is not only fashionable but functional when the temperatures in classrooms are as unreliable as the weather outside. Don’t forget that you can throw your favorite sweater over the top of your dress. 11

This gives your dress the opportunity to be cozy, cute and comfortable. It’s an opportunity to mix textures; don’t be afraid to wear a fuzzy sweater on top of a rougher fabric. This will offer the opportunity to split up your outfit and create more shape. Leggings I know you know it, but leggings are a great way to make your dress a little more casual. Instead of struggling with stockings only to wind up shivering and offset the risk of a run or tear, pull on some leggings. Pair with black to keep it classic, or match the color of your dress to create a more monochromatic look.

SHOES Boots It’s wet, it’s slushy and cold. Ditch the canvas shoes and put on some heavy socks, because it is the season for boots. They make your outfit look effortlessly edgy, and take your dress from cute to cool. There are several routes with this depending on how slippery it is on campus - you can have sturdier, more practical boots or the classic Dr. Martens. Dr. Martens are a staple for a punkier, edgier look, and have been long proven to stand up to tough weather and any situation you might find yourself in. Also, for a chunky in between, don’t forget that they also have a mary jane style shoe. Sneakers On sunnier days, some sneakers are just the key to calming down your dress. Some of the clunkier shoes from the Nike collection, like the Air Max 97, can give you a cute and sporty look - also, they’re customizable. Skate shoes are comfy, easy and there are a lot of slip-on varieties for when you just need to get to class. 14

DAVIS

The Iowa State Fashion Show veteran, Byshawn Davis, has been involved with the show as both a model and designer throughout his career at Iowa State. After debuting his first line, “Pre-Asylum”, in The 2019 Fashion Show, his senior line has been long-awaited. With his 2019 mini collection acting as a prequel to his senior line “ASYLUM,” the two collections are cohesive in colors and silhouettes. Finding inspiration in the abstract, uninfluenced mind of asylum patients, both of Davis’ lines presented in the fashion show feature the usage of utilitarian straps, color blocking, structured silhouettes and layering techniques. His use of distinct textures in combination with uncommon silhouettes communicates a refreshed take on utilitarian menswear that is exclusive to Davis’ line.

In order to create both collections Davis said, “I believe that I push myself further and further outside of that box that everyone has inside of their brain, to create one-of-a-kind pieces.” Contrasting with his inspiration from asylums, Davis’ ultimate goal with this line is to create garments that make people comfortable and confident in themselves while wearing them. Since receiving feedback on “Pre-Asylum” from The Fashion Show judges last year, Davis has worked to fine-tune his senior line and has seen himself grow in the process. Through his commitment to his concepts and dedication to his designs, Davis also received a semifinalist title for the Todd Snyder Scholarship in 2019. Todd Snyder is a successful menswear designer and Iowa State alum. He often has an aesthetic similar to Davis’, relying on structured tailoring and reinvented neutrals to create eye-catching garments. For this reason, receiving this title was also a huge opportunity for growth in his designs. Davis used critiques from industry professionals on both collections in order to construct full lines from concepts. After being encouraged to reenter the scholarship and internship competition this year, Davis’ growth is evident in his new submission. It proves his dedication to his vision. Regardless of the platform, his designs are being presented. Davis strives to create unique, striking designs that relate to both streetwear and runway markets. With his accomplishments throughout the years, his senior line is a representation of his growth as a designer throughout his time at Iowa State and his potential as a designer in the industry. From the sneak peek we got last year of his upcoming collection, the aesthetic and structure of Davis’ line “ASYLUM” will be easily discernible and memorable to the audience and judges when presented at The Fashion Show 2020.

TOP 5 MAKEUP PRODUCTS FOR DATE NIGHT

By Jill Even

On date night, you don’t want your foundation creasing after the first 15 minutes of wear. That’s why Jesse Howard, TREND makeup director, puts value into her essential products, ensuring her go-to’s are always dependable when she wants to make a charming impression. Urban Decay’s Stay Naked Weightless Liquid Foundation For her base makeup, Howard gravitates towards Urban Decay’s Stay Naked Weightless Liquid Foundation for her oily skin. Urban Decay’s Stay Naked Weightless Liquid Foundation is a buildable, medium coverage liquid foundation with a real-skin matte finish designed to last for 24 hours. The foundation is vegan and comes in a variation of 50 shades. “I don’t like full-coverage, so medium coverage is perfect for me,” Howard said. “I’ve used high-end and drugstore [foundations] and this is the only foundation that doesn’t show my pores. After I apply it, my skin looks the same throughout the entire day.”

Becca Cosmetics’ x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Pressed Highlighter For date night, Howard stresses a highlight that isn’t overbearing. That highlight for her is Becca Cosmetics’ x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter, which provides a glow from within. “When this highlighter came out, I saved my money because I really wanted to get it,” Howard said. “The formula is amazing. There’s just something about it that illuminates my skin, rather than making it look like a packed white highlight that sits dull on top of my face.”

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette For her eyes, Howard prefers the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette. The palette has 14 different shades, ranging from neutral to berry, and features matte and metallic hues alike. The palette was inspired by renaissance art and has highly-pigmented shadows that can be used subtly for a romantic date-night look.

ColourPop Ultra Satin Liquid Lip Collection & Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer As for achieving a kiss-worthy pout, Howard likes to layer her products. Doing so draws more attention to the mouth in her opinion. She starts with a nude shade from the ColourPop Ultra Satin Liquid Lip Collection, which she’s able to wear comfortably all day long as it’s not too drying but has pigmentation pay-off. It’s a better product for all-day wear rather than the matte alternative. After making sure the product doesn’t budge from her lips, she then adds Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer in the shade Diamond Milk. The gloss adds a sparkle that Howard says adds to “the shine that draws the eye.” “The formula is very nourishing for your lips and adds that little pop of light that will catch your date’s eye,” Howard said. “It also smells amazing, and I have noticed that the shades are complimentary for multiple skin tones. The color can be sheared out or if you apply it directly with the doe-foot applicator it can be used for a nice dose of color.”

HEALTHY

HASSLE Dirty hair tossed into a quick messy bun or covered by a hat, masking a scalp full of dry shampoo, seems to be the unsung uniform of a college student. Between taking classes, having a job, being involved in clubs and organizations on campus and trying to invest in a social life, hair care doesn’t always take top priority. The hair aisle can feel intimidating. With countless brands to choose from, a myriad of product types and uses and overwhelming price tags, it can be hard to know where to start. Just remember, having good hair doesn’t have to break the bank. In a recent article from Byrdie, Pantene’s Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner are crowned the best duo for normal hair. The silicone-free shampoo paired with the accompanying conditioner, promises 24-hour moisture and is gentle enough to use on treated hair. Doug Ziminski, the owner of Leedz Salon, is passionate about healthy hair and finds the chemical makeup of hair products to be interesting.

“The most important thing with shampoo is that the pH is low,” Ziminski said. “If you can find a shampoo that is low in pH, that’s really good.” He went on to say that a higher pH level, generally means a lower price and vice versa. A low pH level in shampoo is especially important if the hair is colortreated or bleached. Most professional products contain a low pH level. Ziminski encourages people to explore all the listed prices online before investing saying, salons will often retail professional products for more reasonable prices. Some of the best hair products you will find lie in your kitchen cupboard. You can kill two birds with one stone at your local grocer while knowing that what you’re using is completely natural and saving you money. Cassidy Shepley, a current student of La James International College in Des Moines, pursuing cosmetology, encourages using essential oils or coconut oil in your hair as a deep conditioning hair mask. “A lot of coconut oil is in conditioners and stuff too, it’s a really nutritious product,” Shepley said. Along with using it for the occasional deep conditioning mask, coconut oil can also be added to your current shampoo and conditioner to improve hydration properties, or used as hair oil for anti-frizz and to increase shine. This grocery store gem is a safe, affordable alternative to other popular hair oil brands such as Moroccanoil, which retails at $34 a bottle. When you wake up 10 minutes before you need to get to class, a hair wash and blowout quickly become an afterthought. That’s when you reach for your dry shampoo and call it good. Finding an affordable dry shampoo that’s effective can be quite the task and requires much trial and error.

Out of all the drugstore dry shampoos, one stands out among the rest. Tresemme Between the Washes Volumizing Dry Shampoo is known for its light yet volumizing formula infused with clay and citrus. Retailing at only $5.99 and being an Allure Best of Beauty 2019 award winner, you know it’s not something to sleep on. Saving money also starts with using less product. According to Shepley, you only need to shampoo the roots of your hair and condition the ends. Using an excessive amount of product is deemed unnecessary-a little bit goes a long way and will save you money. To top it all off with hairspray, Ziminski recommends the Tigi Bedhead Hard Head Hairspray as a fairly affordable option. “[Tigi Bedhead Hard Head Hairspray] is the best spray for ironing. Before we iron anything, we spray it with that hairspray.” It might be on the higher end of drugstore products, but it effortlessly coats and protects hair all while adding a little gleam (and adjusting pH). Although Tigi’s hairspray is a favorite of Ziminski’s and used daily at Leedz salon, any drugstore hairspray will do. “Hairsprays don’t hurt the hair,” Ziminski said. “Hairspray is actually good for the hair because it coats the hair and anything that coats the hair protects it.” As spring rolls around, it’s a good time to get a trim and switch up your products to liven up your hair after a long winter. Next time you enter the beauty aisle at your local drugstore, hopefully, it won’t feel nearly as intimidating.
