PERSONALISATION OF ONLINE SHOPPING Commerce Sciences offers the operators of online shops an add-on that can be installed on their site with a line of Javascript and enable them to analyse their customers' online purchases based on a variety of criteria. As a consequence, online retailers will be able to take individual measures in an attempt to boost their turnover. For example, they could offer hesitant customers discounts in real time and make special offers to returning customers who have not yet registered with them. Further features include live chats with support staff and seasonal specials.

VIRTUAL FITTING ROOM SOLVES STORAGE PROBLEM Huit, the Japanese operator of the online shop Humor, has opened a store in Tokyo enabling customers to try on clothes virtually and then order them online. The store operates with a minimum of clothing that customers can try on in the usual fashion. The parts of the range that are not available in the store can be tried on virtually and ordered if the results are positive. This allows the store to reduce the storage space it requires, yet still offers customers its entire range of goods on its premises.

KIOSK IDENTIFIES CUSTOMERS USING FACE RECOGNITION 26 new kiosks in the International Finance Center in Seoul now use face recognition to make personalised product suggestions to passersby. The kiosks consist of a screen, two built-in cameras, and the software to determine people's gender and age. Users enter search terms and receive suggested products based on their gender and age. During their development, the kiosks' manufacturer, SK Holding, created a software database containing over 5,000 face profiles, which is used to analyse those of passers-by.

PRINT AD CHANGES COLOUR AND PLAYS MUSIC Toyota's luxury car brand Lexus has launched print advertising for the "Lexus 2013 ES" in which the car's colour can be changed, the headlights turned on and off and its interior displayed – all to music. The advert is brought to life when users place an iPad displaying the website lexus.com/stunning behind the page on which the advert is printed. With the help of "CinePrint" – Lexus proprietary technology – the video playing on the iPad becomes visible through the paper, creating an interactive, multi-sensory experience.

E-COMMERCE PLATFORM FOR PINTEREST The San Jose-based company Pintics has launched an e-commerce platform called "ShopInterest" that enables users to turn their Pinterest boards into storefronts within minutes. After setting up a profile with their Pinterest access data, users choose the boards where their products are found and then enter a description, the price, the delivery costs and the means of payment. If visitors then click on individual images on their boards, they won't be forwarded to the page with the product but can buy it directly from the Pinterest page.

THE BOOK WITH NFC CHIPS The British company Elektor has launched the first ever book with integrated NFC chips called "Catch the Sun – ballooning across the globe". 2,000 years ago, the Kongming balloon was the only way to remain in contact with people over large distances. Today, NFC technology replaces balloon travel. The book brings together the possibilities of communication: it presents impressive pictures of Kongming balloons and connects via NFC technology to smartphones, providing readers with additional information on the book and connection to social networks.
