Chin up,

and look beyond the frontiers Over recent months, people often asked me “Harry, how do you stay so optimistic in these times?” Firstly, because things are going so well with Jan Snel. The organisation is as solid as a rock, so I have every reason to feel happy. But perhaps that is stating things too simply. We also have our ups and downs. The leasing side is going well, but sales go up and down like a yo-yo. It is either feast or famine. You could get annoyed about that, but it wouldn’t help much. To be honest, I get all negativity out of the way at a stroke. We need to be friendlier towards each other again and put some fun back into the business. If you hang your head, you can never see beyond the frontiers. And right now, we really have to look for new markets and new opportunities. ‘Looking beyond the frontiers’ is a theme that recurs time and again throughout this magazine. On pages 40 and 41, you can see how we are literally active beyond the frontiers, with projects on the go from Malaysia to Canada. And we are also ready to help people who come from abroad to work in the Netherlands. The RIEFF housing concept for migrant workers is a great success; see page 30 for more about this. Another six comparable locations will be established in the next year and a half. Recently, we have also been rather pioneering in the field of innovation. This is now bearing fruit. Take ‘Dutch Medical Space’, for example: the complete, mobile operation theatres for hospitals that temporarily require extra space. The requests are coming in, and I am really proud of that! The H2M modules are also proceeding according to expectations. Demand is really increasing now for these lightweight units, which we developed specially for the offshore industry. So, all in all, 2013 is looking very positive for Jan Snel. I’ll leave it to you to judge whether this is the cause or the consequence of my optimism. I wish you a positive second half of 2013!

car路ing Cherish what you have Being caring means togetherness. For us, being caring means using what you have wisely, as a person and as a company. Furthermore, the care sector is an important one for Jan Snel and we cherish it. We know, better than most, how much pressure the care sector is under at present, so it is good to know that we aim to maintain a good balance between patient care, time and the budget in all our projects.

Flexibles At Jan Snel, we love flexibility in all shapes and sizes. For example, there are countless innovative products that are at least as flexible as our solutions. Here are some flexible gadgets that we have spotted.

Flexibles Crumpled map Do you also get a bit impatient when it comes to folding maps? It seems impossible to fold them back as they were originally, and in no time at all they start to tear. But not with this crumpled map, which you can ‘fold’ up any way you want. The map stays legible and will not tear, thanks to the special material. Ideal for full bags and grabby, little children’s hands.

Flexibles Necktie Actually, this is an example of formality rather than flexibility. We aren’t so keen on ties at Jan Snel; we have an informal culture and hard work comes easier when you are not wearing a tie. Despite that, even we have to wear them sometimes. In this case, it is good to know that there are 77 (!) different ways to tie a tie, and that you can even get ones with your own photo on them. So they are quite flexible after all!

Flexibles Pencil It is actually an extension of your brain: the things you develop in your thoughts and dreams become real with the aid of a pencil. Even the biggest building starts with an initial pencil sketch. So an invention like this (1794) deserves a place of honour. This flexible example is special in iconic yellow, as a pencil should be, but completely flexible and (it goes without saying!) with an eraser.

Guy illustrates the collaboration with a nice anecdote. Laughing, he tells us: “Not long ago they transported an oven for us from an old bakery. It turned out to be a really old thing, and not very clean either. In the end, I think they came driving up to us trailing clouds of old flour, but it simply had to be done. Jan Jr’s favourite expression is ‘No problem’. I’m not sure whether he was thinking that at the time, but fortunately it all turned out well!”

Highly secure Replacing cash kiosks is no easy job. The security and quality requirements are high, and many factors are involved in the planning and implementation. Jan Snel developed certified cash kiosks that meet all the requirements and, thanks in part to the plan of approach and the good relationship with the bank, we were chosen to implement the project.

Testing To check that the new cash kiosks comply with NEN standards, they were tested by an independent party. This involves someone trying to break into the kiosk in a short time, using professional burglary tools. They could not do it, so Jan Snel was rewarded with the coveted certificate. We are very proud to have been selected by Rabobank to implement this project. It is an everyday thing now, but ATMs haven’t actually been around for very long. Snel in conversation

When the market calls for tough negotiations, and comparisons are difficult, the power of cooperation really becomes clear. Niels Vergeer, operational director of Jan Snel, is talking to Rob van Vliet of RVV air conditioning. Two companies that have been working together for over twenty years.

Exchange of words Niels vs. Rob

Niels: Have you thought any more about the quotation for that client in Limburg? Rob: We would really like to use Climaflex because of the price and the comfort. It is also quickly installed, which means you will meet your planning schedule. The system is reusable and eco-friendly big advantages for the client and for the user.

Niels: We don’t always have to go for the most complete solution; the best one that will do the job is fine as well. Sometimes they only look at the price ticket and make their decision on that basis. Rob: You know me: I’ll make a proposal for you that I believe in and which I support 100%. Even in these times, I still maintain my principles. Can’t we explain it to them?

Niels: I will first offer them the best practicable solution - which also means the most competitive price - so that we don’t price ourselves out of the market. We will also provide an alternative using Climaflex, adding that we are keen to meet with them to discuss it. [2 days later]

Niels: Our approach was successful; we have been invited for an appointment. [3 days later]

Niels: Congratulations - we have the contract! The decisive factors were the planning schedule and the combination of the purchase price and buy-back value. They were also happy with the service contract. In short, mission accomplished. Rob: That means cake for the entire department. Thanks, Niels!

Exploring the fron More and more frequently, we are asked to construct our temporary accommodation beyond the frontiers. From Belgium to tropical Nigeria: a glance around our international commissions.

Canada (Toronto)

Mammoet Nederland requested us to erect an office of 1,000 m² for a period of two years. For this, we adapted our K1500 units to the local construction requirements.

Canada (Whistler) Our units were used as commentary positions for the press during the 2010 Olympic Games in Whistler.

USA

Units used as emergency school premises (3 classrooms) for 1½ years in Cobb County, Atlanta. A respite for teaching staff, because in the US they normally teach in emergency trailers.

ntiers Norway

A holiday home at a breathtaking location? We erected one, in the space of two days, in Norway.

Belgium

In only 20 weeks, as much as 3,800 m² of temporary expansion was realised, which satisfied the most stringent requirements of the AZ Jan Palfijn hospital!

Germany

For Statoil Deutschland, we are developing an operational management centre (control room) and administrative office.

France

In beautiful Normandy, for the occasion of the 60th anniversary of D-Day, we are erecting 10,000 m2 of accommodation and furnished tents and 400 office units.

Qatar

In a colourful Main Media Centre used at Doha 2006 (Asian Games), we erected 21Â sanitary units.

Malaysia

Nigeria

For Boskalis, under tropical conditions in Nigeria, we erected K1000 and K1500 units for a large offshore project. All the units function as offices and as a home base for the Boskalis staff members. Within two weeks, the job is done, under the inspiring leadership of our colleague Marcel Boekhout.

For the Malaysian army, Jan Snel is going to supply and install various units. In total, sleeping quarters for more than 2,000 men will be realised at various locations in Malaysia.

Jan Snel is sponsoring the initiative by donating a Unimog, a small freight lorry which does particularly well on rough terrain. During a recent working visit to Gambia made by the foundation, it turned out that medical transport in Gambia has been considerably improved. The Unimog is still providing service. A spokesperson relates: “Your Unimog is still the one that does its work even in the worst circumstances. If nothing else can drive, one calls in the help of the Unimog.”
