Paradise Valley’s Go-To Realtor Sees Big Demand After over a year of living and working at home amidst a global pandemic, luxury living has become a top priority. So much so, that not only are AZ residents looking to upgrade, but out of state buyers from California, Seattle, New York and Chicago are heading to the Valley of the Sun in droves to find that perfect mix of indoor/outdoor living not nearly matched by their apartment home lifestyle. “Right now our inventory is at a historical low within the luxury home market,” said Scott Grigg, owner of The Grigg’s Group and the go-to realtor for Paradise Valley. “The quality of life that Arizona offers is in the spotlight following the pandemic; 300+ days of sunshine with expansive patios, pools and outdoor living amenities combined with top of the line luxury indoor amenities; such as home theaters, chef’s kitchens, gyms, and even indoor air quality has become key for our buyers.” While one would think the opposite may be the case; as jobs, companies and industries have been at stake during these uncertain times; the pandemic has made home life, comfort and luxury a top priority. Grigg’s year-over-year revenue proves this point, as his team is on track to close over $120M in sales for 2021 (compared to $88.5M in 2020). With anywhere from 40-50 listings at a time, closing nearly 100 homes per year, The Grigg’s Group sees no sign of slowing down. “We currently don’t have enough product to handle the demand we’re seeing,” said Grigg. “The out-of-state buyers specifically see Arizona as a bargain compared to what they see in their own back yards, so they are buying up everything.” Not just focusing on private listings, Grigg’s team also handles resort-style living projects at posh resorts such as The Phoenician and Mountain Shadows. “If buyers aren’t able to get a private listing, having the option of buying at a resort is oftentimes more attractive due to the additional amenities and lack of a need for upkeep,” said Grigg. “We only have two opportunities left at our Village at Mountain Shadows Community (which includes 40 single family homes ranging from $2M-$9M), two left at our Village at Paradise Reserve at 39th St and Lincoln (where there are a total of 46 homes ranging from $1.9M-$2.8M and hillside homes ranging from $3M-$8M), Ironwood Golf Villas only has four listings left and we have already closed 13 properties at the Phoenician.” In order to handle the demand, Grigg’s client Seven Desert Mountain also has three move-in-ready homes available. Is there an end in sight or will the market continue on like this through year’s end? Time will tell but in the meantime Grigg’s clients are taking advantage of the low interest rates. “Many that would

Cagney An absolutely gorgeous girl, Cagney loves to show off her stunning good looks any time she prances into the play yards at the Arizona Humane Society. Expanding the Reputation of Barrow Neurological Institute Where are you both originally from and how did you meet? SL: I am from West Virginia. ML: I am originally from Chicago. We met in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) when I was a surgical intern, and Suzanne was an ICU nurse. Her level of kinetic energy and warmth at the same time drew me to her. Do you have any hobbies together as a couple? ML: We enjoy hiking, skiing, trail running, mountain biking, writing, and swimming. With such busy schedules, how do you plan time for the two of you? SL: Weekends are key. ML: We had a home in Tahoe and would spend our weekends skiing together in the winter. We enjoy miscellaneous sports in the summer. Mrs. Lawton, what are your interests and passions? SL: I enjoy hiking, horseback riding, photography, swimming, writing, gardening, and mountain biking. Dr. Lawton, when you eventually retire, what would you hope your Barrow legacy will be? ML: To expand the reputation of Barrow Neurological Institute. I want to walk out the doors on my last day having brought Barrow a stronger research

focus to complement our clinical prowess. I also hope to have made it a magnet for entrepreneurial clinician-scientists who have an interest in innovation. Plus, a few buildings to expand campus … Dr. Lawton, what big plans do you have for the future of Barrow Neurological Institute? ML: My goal is to change the nature of health care through big data, transparency, and an “Institute of Excellence” model of delivery. Couple Shares Passion to Support Barrow Neurological Institute What drew you both to Barrow in the first place? SH: The quality of the organization, the research they do and the lives that they save were instrumental in my desire to become involved with Barrow. Being a member of the Barrow Women’s Board fulfills all of those goals. The women are amazing and wonderfully dedicated. MH: I was asked by some friends to serve on the board. When I looked into its mission and quality of blending research and clinical performance, I was impressed and wanted to get involved. Did you ever think that your separate work on the Foundation and Women’s Board would bring you together someday? SH: I joined several years before Mike and we both had many reasons for joining. The fact that we both ended up in leadership roles on the respective boards at similar times was totally coincidental. We are for sure a dedicated Barrow Family and very supportive of the organization. MH: No, but Sandy’s involvement in the Women’s Board was a major factor in my joining BNF Board. What do you consider the best part about working on the Foundation and the Women’s Board? SH: The best part has been the ability to help raise needed funds for the life-changing research and clinical projects. Also, making referrals for friends and family to help them get diagnosis and extraordinary care for a number of neurological diseases. MH: The significant impact we are able to make on research and clinical procedures that save lives. Where do you hope to see the Women’s Board and the Foundation in 5 years? SH & MH: We would like to see the Barrow brand continue to build and have the BNI (Barrow Neurological Institute) recognized as the #1 Neuroscience Institute in the world. Do you both volunteer for Barrow exclusively or do you both have other philanthropic interests? SH: I have been involved in many Community Organizations in the past; JDRF, Fiesta Bowl, Valley Leadership, Heart Ball, etc. However, out of all of them, I am most passionate about Barrow! Since taking over running the family business nine years ago when my father’s health started to fail, Barrow has been the only one I have made time for, serving on a number of committees,

including 2016 Ball Co-Chair and just ended my term as Barrow Women’s Board Chairman. I couldn’t be more honored and thrilled to donate all of my charitable activities and time to this very worthwhile cause! MH: We are mainly focused on Barrow, but I also serve on the board for the US Naval Academy Foundation and was a past Chairman for the Fiesta Bowl. What are your hobbies? SH: Golf, traveling and our new puppy Khloe. MH: Golf, working out, building our businesses. If you each got to select 3 couples living or dead to come to your dinner party, who would they be? SH: Cinderella & Prince Charming (Love the story, reminds me of Mike & me), Princess Diana & Elton John (both interesting with challenging lives), Queen Victoria & Prince Albert. (Can you tell I am the romantic, whimsical one?) MH: Abraham & Mary Todd Lincoln ( Mary Todd is a distant cousin), John Ross, (well-known Chief of Cherokee Nation – Indian Name was Tsan-Usdi), my mom was part Cherokee, John Paul Jones, one of the founders of the US Navy.

Barrow Grand Ball Co-Chairs “Pivot” Towards Success How long have you been affiliated with the Barrow Neurological Women’s Board? I received a call from Carole Moreno nine years ago to join the Board. It was an honor to be asked to raise funds for this exceptional institute in the heart of Phoenix and to serve with such a dynamic group of women. Have you been involved in events or boards other than Barrow? Yes – Being chosen as a Trendsetter in 2004 was a result of my various community leadership roles both in education and non-profit fundraising. Did you volunteer to co-chair the Ball in 2021, or was it assigned to you? When you join the Board, it is understood that you will eventually be asked to chair or co-chair the Ball. Sandy Hecomovich, this year’s Women’s Board Chairman, did a great job selecting Kolby and myself for our complementary skills, experience, and connections. We became known as “Team M & M” and are now BFF’s. What was the most difficult part of making “A Toast to Barrow” happen? By October 2020, it was clear that we would have to make a grand “pivot” into uncharted territory. Coordinating a virtual event production in a short amount of time was challenging, but also exhilarating to have the opportunity to think “outside the box.” How did you come up with this winning and successful concept for the event? We pulled together a talented team to brainstorm a creative virtual event to honor our constituents and celebrate our friendships. The event needed to be personal, elegant, heartfelt, impactful, fun, and inspire our donors to continue their generous support. From our feedback, the production met all of our goals! Michael Barnard of the Phoenix Theatre was instrumental in crafting a fun parody of the Hairspray song, “You Can’t Stop the Beat”, into “Barrow Can’t be Beat.” In addition, we have to thank Matt Wright from BNF Marketing, Jeff Halpern from ZenVideo, Jim Manley from Manley Films and Mark Tarbell for exceeding our event expectations. Do you plan to return to the opulent Grand Ballroom affair if things return to normal in 2022? Absolutely. The Barrow Grand Ball 2022 is scheduled for January 22nd at the Arizona Biltmore!

What are your hobbies outside of Barrow? Ocean sailing, skiing, snow shoeing and hiking What 7 people living or dead would you each invite to your dinner party? Having lived in Washington, D.C. for 20 years, the following come to mind. These powerful leaders exemplify solving complex issues through dialogue rather than the monologue that we so often see today. Katherine Graham – First Female CEO of a Fortune 500 company; The Washington Post, and DC hostess extraordinaire, Margaret Thatcher – former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Clarence Thomas – Supreme Court Justice; Steve Jobs – Co-founder of Apple and Technology Guru; Billy Graham – Religious Leader; Thomas Sowell – Economist and Ronald Reagan – former President of the United States.

I have just finished my 3rd year on the Barrow Women’s Board. It is such an honor to serve on this board that is full of accomplished and driven women. And, a privilege to raise funds for such a deserving institution such as The Barrow Neurological Insititute. Have you been involved in events or boards other than Barrow?

I have been a member of Board of Visitors for the past 8 years. I have been on the TGen Key to the Cure committee, as well as TGen Women’s Auxiliary. I am currently a member of the Ladies of the Court and will be Co-chairing the Legacy Luncheon next March 2022. Did you volunteer to co-chair the Ball in 2021, or was it assigned to you?

Sandy Hecomovich, Women’s Board Chairman, asked if Diane and I would be interested. Diane and I had only met briefly prior, so we didn’t know each other well. But, as soon as we started working together, we became fast friends…forever friends. What was the most difficult part of making “A Toast to Barrow” happen?

The year itself, having to deal with the uncertainties that COVID was creating was probably the most difficult aspect. Making the firm decision to go virtual with our event was also very difficult. There were so many twists and turns along the way and we found out very quickly that we needed to be flexible and resilient. We became masters of “The Pivot”. How did you come up with this winning and successful concept for the event?

Our traditional Barrow Grand Ball is not a fundraiser, it is a celebration and thank you to our donors. We wanted to stay true to this and also add a little entertainment, and add impactful stories of how our donors’ contributions are being well spent. We are so proud of BNI and really wanted to highlight our doctors, nurses, researchers, and staff. Thankfully, we had creative people who stepped up to the plate to lend a hand; including Michael Barnard of The Phoenix Theatre Company, Jeff Halpern of Zen Video, Manley Films, our own Matt Wright, Megan Bourbeau, and the entire team at the Barrow Neurological Foundation.

Do you plan to return to the opulent Grand Ballroom affair if things return to normal in 2022? Yes. We already have our date reserved for January 22, 2022 What are your hobbies outside of Barrow? Biking, skiing, hiking, and golfing. What 7 people living or dead would you each invite to your dinner party? I love being with my family, so the first three people on the list would be my husband, Kenny, our son, Luke, and our daughter, Cassie. If we are talking a Barrow dinner party, then I would round out the last four spots with this year’s Barrow Grand Ball team of Diane and Tom Might, and Sandy and Mike Hecomovich. We have lots to celebrate!!!

Paradise Valley at Its Very Best The Verve When the restaurant originally opened several years ago, it had a spartan and cold vibe. But since COVID forced so many places to reinvent the wheel, the look is now airier. The establishment has added additional flora and greenery. The decor is much improved. If you can, book a table on the outside patio. Soft music plays as you sip cocktails and gaze at the remarkable views of Camelback Mountain. The service is typical of a Marriott property. It’s always outstanding! Starters Try the Lobster Escargot. This is a unique spin on traditional escargot and a nice option for people who don’t enjoy snails. The Shrimp Cocktail was fantastic. The shrimp were huge and tasted as though they had just been caught. We also suggest the blue cheese wedge salad. The portion is certainly big enough to split. The bacon, crisp lettuce and hunks of blue cheese are as expected but a very nice combination of flavors. You can soak up the salad dressing with the enormous cheese-infused popovers that greet you upon arrival. You’ll try to be good and pull off just a little bit and then you will quickly find yourself eating the entire bread creation and with butter too! Mains While The Lincoln is traditionally a streak house, they also offer a wide variety of fish too. The Agave Whiskey Glazed Salmon is tremendous and there is also a catch of the day. The restaurant offers several mari-

nated chicken and pork selections as well as a Vegan dish. The steak is simply amazing. The flavors and tenderness are perfection. We tried the Cedar River Filet Mignon 9 oz. It seemed far bigger than 9 ounces. The Oscar-style preparation of the Dungeness crab and hollandaise sauces combined with the juices of the meat were perfect. One of the very best steaks in our opinion.

Sides There are a ton of fine side dishes to add to your huge, portioned meals here. We suggest the Brussel Sprouts with pancetta and seasoned raisins. Then try the Mac N Cheese, which is so full of a variety of cheeses, you’ll eat the whole thing at once. The mashed potatoes and steak fries were also great, and all the sides arrived piping hot and very generous. Desserts Our server suggested two confections that didn’t disappoint. The cheesecake, again a huge offering and simply perfect. The graham cracker crust alone was worth eating by itself. The cheesecake was light and fluffy. The bread pudding was our next offering. Many people complain that most bread pudding has raisins in it. Thankfully, this one did not. Again, fantastic from start to finish and served with one heck of a whiskey sauce. The Columbian coffee was to die for! In the End Marriott has done a tremendous job with the restaurant. They needed to. Many had complained about the lack of ambiance, slow service and mediocre food. All of this has been resolved. The atmosphere is greatly improved. The service is excellent. The food is perhaps some of the best in the Valley and the portions are so very generous. There were problems with this restaurant and as far as we could see, they have all been addressed. The Lincoln is one of the finest dining establishments the city has to offer. Yes, it’s that good!
