In life, if you are fortunate enough to meet a person or people that shape your life then be very thankful. For me, that one person was Sanford Roth. He passed away this fall and leaves one of the most lasting legacies that dates to the early 1960s.
Before making the connection with Sanford Roth and his late wife Marcia in 1984, at the Phoenix Heart Ball, I failed to realize that they knew all my parents’ friends. The Roth’s were the first people to write me a thank you note for the kind things I said about both of them at the ball that night. I do not think the then publisher of Trends liked the publicity I started to quickly receive after joining his staff in that cold January of 1994. Anyway, I became remarkably close to Marcia and Sanford almost immediately. Sanford would take me on tours of their space-age Paradise Valley home designed by Ross Schupbach in 1963. He educated me on the couple’s extraordinary art collection and their stunning mid-century modern furniture. This was about a decade before the mid-century trend went full tilt. I featured their home in 2001 after I purchased this publication.
A noted international arthritis physician and global speaker, Sanford traveled the world in boundless medical circles. He was a tremendous patron of the arts and sciences and lent his name to countless organizations and charities. Sanford had made his fortune but never wore it on his sleeve. His culture and refinement were to be envied. I must have pushed 100 people through Roth’s home to show off its museumlike purity. Yet all were greeted with a smile, a glass of champagne and hor d’oeuvres courtesy of Vincent on Camelback. Guests participated in thought-provoking conversations next to the couple’s blazing Malm fireplace. Sanford had read every best-selling book, healed the sick, traveled the world and collected priceless art. Together with his wife Marcia, they turned their home into a cultural epicenter for dinners and cocktails parties associated with art and science alike. He also made the Trends Magazine Best Dressed List in 2007, the oldest in the state started in 1982. Marcia once privately told me that she had made all his suits in the 1960s, In his residency he could not afford the stylish suits the other physician wore, so Marcia made them. Simply unbelievable! Sanford Roth was a dear friend. He was one of the last-born vivants. A gentleman and a scholar. And a dashing dresser. In today’s billionaire boys club norms, he brought far more to the table than just money. Sanford was truly a man for all seasons. He will be missed by so many. But we must remember, he had a remarkable and exceptionally long life. Today Sanford dances again in heaven with his one love, Marcia.
Ray Thurston
By Bill Dougherty
The philanthropic community as well as the business community were shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Valley maverick Ray Thurston. He leaves behind a brilliant legacy. A legacy the rest of us can only marvel at.
If you are fortunate enough to know Ray Thurston and his vivacious wife Amy, then consider yourself very lucky. They were a dynamic force in the fund-raising world. Both extremely witty and lighthearted with amazing charm. Ray was truly a force. First, in the business world from the time he was eleven. He delivered the Hollywood Reporter on a bike route in the Hollywood Hills, where he grew up. The draft would sidetrack his collage years. However, he served his country proudly. Afterwards he returned and finished college. From that point on, everything Ray touched turned to gold. He quickly founded SonicAir Courier, an integrated logistics company, long before the terms existed. His company became a case study in how great companies are run. Ray treated all his employees like a big family and the business soared! The company became so successful that UPS decided to purchase the firm. They turned around and hired Ray to run their first ever logistic division for the worldwide shipping company.
In the social community, Ray was iconic. He honed his well-tuned business skills into the philanthropic world and helped many charitable organizations rebound from monetary loss and the pandemic. A lover of the great outdoors since he was a boy, Ray took his wife and two sons around the world. The family liked to visit far away and remote places. Jackson, Wyoming would answer the families second home. Ray loved its uninterrupted beauty and vast mountain ranges while exploring the 44th state.
Our community and the world have lost one of the finest men imaginable. Ray had a vision; made it happen and then repeated the process yet again in the portals of high society. Again, everything he touched turned to gold. A great husband and father. A noted and generous community patron. Ray was the best guest and always the most humorous person to have at your party. He will be missed. Ray Thurston was a man among men.

Timeless Treasures: One-of-a-Kind Jewelry That Speaks Through the Ages
How has your journey as an artist evolved over the years, and what led you to focus on jewelry design?
My journey as an artist began in interior design and then evolved into mixed-media sculpting. I’ve always loved working with my hands, creating pieces that balance form and function. About 15 years ago, I decided to focus on jewelry design, as I wanted to create art that people could wear and connect with on a personal level. Jewelry felt like a natural progression because it allowed me to blend artistry with intimacy, creating pieces that hold emotional significance and become part of my clients’ personal stories.
How do you ensure your designs remain timeless while incorporating both antique and modern elements?
To me, the key to creating timeless jewelry is balancing classic design elements with a touch of modern sensibility. The antique pieces I incorporate have an inherent sense of history and tradition, while my approach to design brings them into a contemporary context. By using high-quality materials and focusing on wearable art that transcends trends, I ensure that each piece feels both enduring and relevant, no matter the time period.
What exciting projects or themes are you exploring in your latest collection?
In my latest collection, I’ve been exploring the concept of “layers of time.” I’m incorporating more contemporary shapes and metals, like mixed silver and gold, alongside more antique elements. It’s an exciting blend of old and new that’s meant to reflect the passage of time. I’m also experimenting with new techniques in metalwork, creating designs that feel both bold and delicate, timeless yet fresh.
You’ve recently received some incredible recognition – can you tell us about the awards you’ve won and what they mean to you?
Yes, I was incredibly honored to be recognized at J.P. Morgan Private Bank’s Champions of Excellence ceremony, where I was named one of the Elite Women in the Industry. The recognition was humbling, and it was truly inspiring to be celebrated alongside three other remarkable women who have made significant contributions to their fields. It’s always encouraging to be acknowledged for the hard work and passion that goes into creating something unique. I was also honored to receive the 2024 ‘Best of the Valley Award’ from AZ Foothills Magazine in the Best Local Jewelry Designer category!
How should people who are interested in your jewelry contact you?
My studio is located in Paradise Valley, where I work by appointment to provide a personalized and tailored experience. I also showcase my designs at exclusive seasonal trunk shows. If you’re interested in exploring my designs further, feel free to email me to set up a private appointment or to get my trunk show schedule. I’d love the opportunity to help you find or create the perfect piece! Contact me at bonnieradow@cox.net.

Online social calendar: www.trendspublishing.com/social-calendar
Welcome back. People in Paradise Valley are complaining that it’s taking far too long to receive their monthly copy of this publication. Since the pandemic, the postal service is operating at 50%. Jobs vacated by Covid have not been filled and few if any people want to work for the fractured institution. Prior to all hell breaking loose in 2020, the USPS had two weeks to deliver bulk mail. Now they have five and a half weeks. So, if you are not a first-class subscriber, please be patient. We are still feeling the effects of shutting down the world for more than a year.
For those of you who got to attend this year’s Trends Gala, you probably swooned over the bountiful and beautiful crop of new Trendsetters. Weren’t they magnificent?
We have tons of coverage in this issue of the many fine efforts of our generous community so please enjoy!
Recently I have observed the growing presence of VIP lounges at many daytime and evening events. The term, generated from the 1963 film The V.I.P.s introduced the growing jet set to opulent firstclass lounges throughout the world. It starred recently married and extremely controversial Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. But do
these lounges have a place in Phoenix high society? I would argue that char ity events should be far more welcom ing and egalitarian. I am not sure that exclusivity is this arena is necessary. The general cocktail receptions are usually the most fun anyway,
We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Get ready for a rollercoaster of fabulous events in 2025.
GOTCHA ...
A well-known socialite has solicited fine jewelers for her various live auctions for decades. But some in the industry grew weary of the woman. Few winners of the auctions seldom came into their store to have gems fitted or exchanged. Then two local jewelers placed spies at her galas, only to realize their jewelry was nowhere to been seen. The aging socialite even had the audacity to attend events wearing the stones she had previously procured for her own galas’ live auctions. You must be so proud of yourself for your dishonesty. How sad!
MAKING A DIFFERENCE! “Reach out and touch someone.”
By Patsy Lowry
Just think about how much happiness, pleasure and joy you could give someone who is alone or feeling lost and alienated during the holiday season. Someone who needs comfort, attention, kindness and affection. Lonely friends can be uplifted by social interaction. Why not call a family member or friend to let them know how special they are to you. Invite them to a family gathering or on a personal outing with just the two of you. Do something together that you have never done before. Pamper and indulge them. Now is the perfect time to do something extra special, something unexpected. Connect to something larger than yourself. When you reach out to someone you care about, this noble gesture has boomerang effects. Engage your senses, open your heart and discover the joy of sharing a meaningful experience with a friend in need. Your friend will be receptive and grateful to you. Spending Intimate time together, one on one, can be healing, comforting, strengthen your relationship, and sometimes, life changing. By sharing your positive thoughts and energies, you will receive positive thoughts and energies in return. Being together is the time to express and receive feelings of affection, esteem and trust. You might be surprised about how much you learn about each other.
Quality-bonding ideas:
1. Take a photo of the two of you and give him/her a beautifully wrapped frame to remember this special occasion. Be sure to put names, the date and the year on the back of the photo.
2. If you are cooks, bake cookies or something delicious together. Print out the recipe.
3. Schedule two massages at a local spa.
4. Drive to Arcosanti, Prescott or Sedona for lunch.
5. Go hiking or swimming.
6. Take a walk at the Desert Botanical Garden and absorb the beauty of the desert.
7. Make it an annual event. Something to look forward to all year. What could be more meaningful, memorable and wonderful than spending precious time with someone who needs you at this time in their lives? Both of you will feel loved, cherished and appreciated for having shared and created such magical memories. Please remember to “reach out and touch someone.” Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!!
“Peace of Mind”
Peace of mind is what we have delivered to our clients for forty-three years. Oliver Smith began sourcing diamonds directly from cutters, eliminating the middleman to bring wholesale prices to the Valley. We are transparent about our costs and margins—no in ated markups, no need to negotiate. Every natural diamond we o er is ethically sourced and GIA certi ed. We believe a diamond marks the start of a lifelong connection, and we price ours knowing we will be here to buy them back when it is time to trade in and upgrade. Rest assured—you are buying from a trusted, family-owned business rooted here in the Phoenix Valley.

A MARVELOUS MOONDANCE
On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Heard’s annual gala, Moondance, celebrated the museum’s new season with the reopening of the Howard R. and Joy M. Berlin Museum Shop after an extensive five-month renovation. 450 attendees had the first opportunity to explore the spectacular new retail space while enjoying the museum’s fall exhibition, Meryl McMaster: Bloodline. Gala chairs Merle and Steve Rosskam, supported by an outstanding gala committee, organized the event and proceeds
from the evening surpassed $1 million. Guests arrived through the historic museum entrance, enjoyed live music, hors d’oeuvres and cocktails across the Heard’s campus. The event honored acclaimed Navajo tapestry artist, DY Begay, and local business and philanthropic leaders, Rose and Harry Papp. It was a spectacular evening celebrating Indigenous arts and artists at the Heard Museum!

EVENING OF TRENDS 2024
The Camelback Inn proved yet again to be the perfect venue for our annual Evening of Trends Gala. We were so delighted to feature Joan and Jerry Colangelo as our Fabulous Phoenicians. This amazing power couple literally built our Valley. That night we highlighted our 10 new Trendsetters on the runway in a spectacular tribute to their unbelievable accomplishments. They were greeted by 1985 Fashionable Phoenician Harriet Friedland and 1987 Fashionality Penny Gunning, with bouquets of flowers.
Musical genus Chris Beckley produced a fitting tribute to the legendary Burt Bacharach. This served as background music for a slide show that dates back to 1982. It featured all those Fabulous Phoenicians, Fashionable
Phoenicians, Fashionalities and Trendsetters who have come before our 2024 recipients. Trends Magazine publisher Bill Dougherty from the stage credited 1985 Fashionable Phoenician, the late Cheryl Fine with the vast changes he made to the publication upon his purchase in 2000. Jim Cook was the most dapper man in the room in a maroon crushed velvet evening jacket. Linda Herold and Sandra Wilken tied for best-dressed of the night. But it was Steve Serrano and Steve Schopf who arrived and departed in full black tuxedos. They eclipsed everyone else. Proceeds from the gala will serve to benefit several Valley charities that were hand-picked by the Colangelo Family Foundation. You should have been there!

WOMEN’S BOARD OF HONORHEALTH SOS RECEPTION
SOS or Sharing Our Science, now in its third year brought out more people than ever imagined. The Arizona Biltmore Resort’s famed conference center or ABB ballrooms as they are also called was packed to the gills with a philanthropic crowd of everyone that has the ability to effect change. The autumn sun was setting as an opulent buffet and hosted cocktail reception got underway. Physicians Todd Levine and Justin Moser gave short but tremendously insightful talks on
melanoma prevention, new advances in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease along with other strides in neurodegenerative disease. Dashing HonorHealth CEO Jared Langkilde returned again to speak on the ever-changing effects of hospital robots and automated infection control. This reception marked the greatest turnout since it was founded by Penny Gunning and Ina Manaster several years ago. It was smashing!

60 Years of Inspired Support
Few Valley organizations can boast a rich 60-year history of support and impact in the community. Still, this year marks that milestone for the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation. It all started after Charles Barrow, Sister Mary Placida, and John R. Green, MD, opened Barrow Neurological Institute with fifty-two patient rooms and one neurosurgical operating room. Today, Barrow is internationally recognized as a top neurological treatment and research destination, and the Barrow Women’s Board has happily been a part of this storied success, raising funds for expansion and research over the past 60 years.
In 1965, Barrow Neurological Foundation appointed the first Women’s Board chair, Lou Davenport Case. She and Thelma Kieckhfer chaired the first New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball held at the Casa Blanca Inn, raising $26,000 for neurological research at Barrow. This event has evolved into the Barrow Grand Ball, held at the Arizona Biltmore each January. The Ball has soared to great success, being the state’s most financially successful social event and raising more than $110 million throughout its history.
The Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation, with Dionne Najafi as the 2024-25 chair, comprises 38 of the Valley’s most successful community leaders, 18 “life members”, and 5 members reaching the prestigious status of “emeriti.” Together, they represent a new cohort of knowledgeable, connected, strong women committed to continuing the traditions of the magnificent generations before them.
This year’s Barrow Grand Ball will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, chaired by Cathy Kleeman and Susan Westra, with Carole Moreno serving as the ball advisor. Commemorating this 60-year milestone, Barrow emeritus Robert Spetzler, MD, and Volker K.H. Sonntag, MD, will serve as honorary ball chairs in recognition for their significant impact of life-saving clinical excellence and innovation.
Over the past 60 years, Women’s Board members have dedicated their time, devoted their significant talents, and designated their treasure to Barrow Neurological Institute, enabling the advancement of life-saving treatments and cures for patients around the globe. In addition, the Board supports Barrow’s neuroscience nurses and hosts an annual Education Enrichment Evening to expand community education.
The Women’s Board has reached incredible milestones along its 60-year journey.

Sculpted Jawline With the New Juvederm Volux!
Benefits of Juvéderm Volux XC:
• Enhanced jawline definition
• Improved facial symmetry
• Restored volume and structure in the lower face
• Smooth and natural-looking results
• Long-lasting effects
• Non-surgical treatment option
• Minimal downtime or recovery period
Sculpt & Enhance Your Jawline
Juvéderm Volux XC is an advanced injectable gel designed to address moderate to severe loss of jawline definition. As we age, the lower face may lose volume and firmness, leading to a less defined jawline. With Juvéderm Volux XC, skilled practitioners can precisely sculpt and enhance your jawline, adding volume and improving its shape and structure. The result? A smooth, chiseled, naturallooking jawline that lasts up to 12 months.
How does Juvéderm Volux XC work?
Juvéderm Volux XC works by using hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body. The gel formulation is injected into the target areas of the jawline, where it replenishes lost volume and adds definition. HA attracts and retains water molecules, providing hydration and adding fullness to the treated area. Juvéderm Volux XC restores structure and definition to the jawline, resulting in a more sculpted and youthful appearance.
MCMASTER: BLOODLINE
The Heard Museum’s new Signature Exhibition, Open Now
Meryl McMaster: Bloodline presents a survey of a remarkable Canadian artist whose pioneering large-scale photographic works reflect her mixed Plains Cree/Métis, Dutch, and British ancestry. This exhibition explores her past and present explorations of family histories, focusing particularly on her Plains Cree female forebears from the Red Pheasant Cree Nation in present-day Saskatchewan.
BARROW EDUCATION ENRICHMENT EVENING 2024
No one was prepared for the recently totally rebuilt Adobe at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. The majestic views, architecture and added conference facilities are simply heart-stopping! Just the other night the Barrow Women’s Board held their first outing at the posh and space-age venue. Noted Barrow physicians Robert Spetzler, Michael Lawton, Marwan Sabbagh and Andrew Yang lent their sensational talents to the night. So did Chase McPherson, the manager of neurosurgical
robot operations. Guests gathered on the lawn just as the sun was setting and it was smashing. The restaurant made every effort to impress with a lavish buffet and cocktails. Then some of the sharpest minds in medicine addressed guests. The event, hosted annually by The Barrow Women’s Board on behalf of Barrow Neurological Foundation, did an extraordinary job. This perfectly orchestrated evening was not only knowledgeable but also informative for those in attendance.

PHOENIX HEART BALL 65TH ANNIVERSARY
Chairman Pam Risoleo must have been quite pleased by the triumphant success of the 65th annual Phoenix Heart Ball. A flawless cocktail reception greeted all who entered the Phoenician Resort. Silver trays of champagne and hot hors d’ oeuvres served as the perfect opening to a beautiful fall evening. The ballroom, which was designed by Lux Florals, was perhaps the finest and most beautiful in recent memory. Shades of pale blue, gold, red and pink made for a heartstopping ballroom. Crisp salads, squash soup and beef Wellington
proved the perfect fare. The chocolate dessert was mind-blowing! Merrymakers moved and grooved to the sounds of Emerald City, until dawn’s early light.
Belle of the ball: Megan Lau Hackbarth in shimmering gold to the floor. The most Dapper Dan: Michael Nicholas in the classic tuxedo. People are still talking about the brilliant night!

Helping Animals and Serving Fantastic Food Too
By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean
Two of the things I enjoy most, as you probably know, are really good food and really good stories. Every once in a while I get to enjoy both of them at the same time. Having the ability to do good without doing anything other than enjoying some of the best pizza in town in a place so unique I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it. Where having a meal is making a difference, welcome to Pizza to the Rescue.
The brainchild of co-owners Hunter Rodgers and Geri Hormel, Pizza to the Rescue serves up delicious handcrafted food with a greater purpose. Saving mothers and their puppies in the sanctuary of Almost There Rescue located
just behind the restaurant. 25% of the proceeds from pizza sales go directly to the rescue. Don’t think for a moment however that this is just a pizza joint, it is not. What it is, is a unique restaurant serving up an eclectic array of Italian and Mediterranean classics as well as inspired cocktails and an extensive wine menu. All served up in a hip, soulful restaurant and airy patio. All of the food is cooked over fire. Yes, all of the food. Even the water for the homemade pasta is wood heated. There is no gas and no freezers so everything is crafted in house that day. I began to wonder if they had hand built the pizza oven although I did find out that it was only one of three in the United States of that size built by Stefano Ferrara Forni in Naples Italy.
We began with melt in your mouth grilled marinated artichokes in lemon and olive oil accompanied by charred beets and a sinful whipped chevre goal cheese and beet puree. Housemade meatballs, expertly seasoned, rounded out the appetizers. We then took the suggestion of their house specialty margherita pizza with added pepperoni and a hot honey drizzle. The crust of the pizza was unlike anything I have ever tasted and we’ve traveled extensively through Italy! I’m a sucker for simplicity and the simple yet elevated classic, caccio e pepe bucatini did not disappoint. Velvety pasta bathed in egg yolk, pecorino and fresh black pepper was simply divine.
Pizza to the Rescue, and their lively, friendly and very knowledgeable staff make this an experience, not only in flavors but a unique opportunity to make a meal make a difference. The good that this restaurant is doing along with a culinary checkered flag is unlike any restaurant that I have visited or even heard of. Did I mention that they bring the puppies available for adoption onto the patio at 6 every night weather permitting? Yeah, they do. Get here fast and get here often. When you hear a restaurant has gone to the dogs, this one really has.
