Checking in with Leevon and Vincent Guerithault of Vincent on Camelback

What happened last year and why did a clothing store move into Vincent’s?

In the summer of 2023, Vincent on Camelback partnered with a Valley entrepreneur to explore retirement options while preserving the restaurant’s legacy. The entrepreneur relocated his clothing store into our banquet room but the deal did not materialize as hoped and we ended the partnership, regaining full control. The clothing store has relocated and Vincent and Leevon are energized and excited for the upcoming season.

Is Vincent retiring from the restaurant business?

Not yet! Although Vincent entered into a partnership to start that transition, he discovered that his passion for being in the kitchen and serving his loyal patrons is as strong as ever.

Has Vincent on Camelback or Vincent Market Bistro closed?

At no point has Vincent on Camelback or Vincent Market Bistro been closed. We remain open for dinner 4 nights a week and in October, will reopen for dinner on Tuesdays.

Did Vincent sell Vincent’s?

No. While the partnership agreement allowed Vincent to focus on cooking while someone else managed the business, Vincent’s has always remained under the family’s ownership. Vincent and Leevon are back at the helm and preparing to celebrate their 40th year in

business. Their son, Christian, is actively involved in the kitchen and the Guerithault family is excited to introduce new menu items and exciting changes in the restaurant

Does Vincent’s still offer catering?

Yes! We are proud to continue offering our full-service catering. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering at home or a large wedding, Leevon and our team are here to help make your event unforgettable.

Is the Camelback Market returning?

No, the Camelback Market will not be returning. We’ve given it a lot of thought, but the weekly operation was a tremendous undertaking. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us each Saturday for 30 years and made the Market such a special experience. It was a wonderful chapter, but it’s time to look ahead to what’s new and exciting.

Are you doing anything new this season?

We’re making changes to the Bistro, with the introduction of new menu items as well as the addition of a small bar. The restaurant is undergoing some exciting changes, our banquet room is remodeled and ready for private events. In October, we’ll be introducing a Wine Club, offering exclusive access to exceptional French wines at great prices.

LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to June

Welcome back! From all of us at Trends Magazine and the Trends Charitable Fund, we hope you had a great vacation. Just when you thought you had enough Bain de Soleil (now called Vacation Orange Gel.) I liked the old name better; you blink and the social season came at you like a title wave!

At the end of last season, we announced the much-anticipated Best Dressed list. As you know there are only two people added to the list annually, two people that ascend to hall of fame status. If we lose someone they are moved to the memorial section. It is a big deal, since the list is the oldest and most duplicated in the state!

Anyway, we accidentally moved Dayton Adams, who is alive and well, to the memorial section of the page. Dayton Grafman, who sadly left our world several years ago, should have occupied that space, not Mr. Adams. Boy did we make a mess! When ever you screw up, apologize. The world we be a better place if you do. I want to thank Laura Grafman, who quickly caught the error and Shelley and Dayton Adams for being so gracious and witty in the matter.

Danny Medina and Janna Boomers bach have died. Mr. Medina started this publication in 1982. I worked for him for seven years and purchased it from him at the end of 2000. Ms. Boomersbach was a bestselling author, columnist, and television personality. Both writers were extremely controversial, colorful, and notorious. They made their mark!

In cocktail polo news you should know ... that the social community has the tired of a beautiful and very well-liked socialite. Apparently, a consummate guest to the rarefied world of private jets, yachts, country clubs, vacation homes and opulent dinner parties, the beauty NEVER reciprocates to any of her friends. After decades of hosts and hostesses footing the bill, many have decided to strike the woman permanently for their respective and unobtainable guest lists. Remember you get back what you put out…

Sculpted Jawline With the New Juvederm Volux!

Benefits of Juvéderm Volux XC:

• Enhanced jawline definition

• Improved facial symmetry

• Restored volume and structure in the lower face

• Smooth and natural-looking results

• Long-lasting effects

• Non-surgical treatment option

• Minimal downtime or recovery period

Sculpt & Enhance Your Jawline

Juvéderm Volux XC is an advanced injectable gel designed to address moderate to severe loss of jawline definition. As we age, the lower face may lose volume and firmness, leading to a less defined jawline. With Juvéderm Volux XC, skilled practitioners can precisely sculpt and enhance your jawline, adding volume and improving its shape and structure. The result? A smooth, chiseled, naturallooking jawline that lasts up to 12 months.

How does Juvéderm Volux XC work?

Juvéderm Volux XC works by using hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body. The gel formulation is injected into the target areas of the jawline, where it replenishes lost volume and adds definition. HA attracts and retains water molecules, providing hydration and adding fullness to the treated area. Juvéderm Volux XC restores structure and definition to the jawline, resulting in a more sculpted and youthful appearance.

Elva Coor

If you were to select a member of Valley philanthropy who truly made a difference, it would clearly be Elva Coor. She passed way last summer after a long and rich life. Elva leaves behind one of the most remarkable and lasting legacies that will serve our state for generations to come.

Elva Coor was a long-time family friend. She always called me “Billy.” Throughout the years, the Arizona native had transformed herself through many successful careers and civic and philanthropic horizons. Elva was proud of her state and intended to make it greater than most could imagine. One of the daughters of the legendary Wingfield family, she knew hard work and determination from an early age. Elva and her family aided closely with her parents on their countless ranches and restaurants and lodges throughout the state. These talents learned at an early age would give her the tools needed to excel at her own business. By the late 1980s Elva owned a hugely successful answering service and cellular phone company long before the trend became the standard norm. She affectionately referred to herself as a “call girl.”

In 1994 she married a dear and longtime friend Lattie Coor and the two would make history together at Arizona State University. In my opinion, there was no one more suited for the role of Mrs. ASU than Elva Coor. Her ability to connect people was astonishing. If central casting ever needed to send the perfect first lady or community leader to a set, it would be Elva. She would link the city of Phoenix together with Tempe university and both would benefit tremendously. Her various programs and initiatives included countless civic and scholastic programs that brought the two together through various resources and research programs from ASU. By this time Elva had been awarded almost every achievement imaginable. Valley Leadership, ASU Jr. MLK Servant Leadership Award, Charter 100, AWEE, National Association of Businesswomen and on and on. Together as a couple the Coor’s lent their support to the Phoenix Art Museum, the Phoenix Heart Ball, the Barrow Ball and the Heard Museum, a place that was near and dear to their hearts.

Elva Coor was not only a Fabulous Phoenician, wife, mother, grandmother and a visionary. She was an experienced mountain hiker and noted equestrian. Her ever-positive attitude, resilient business mind and hard work made her an exemplary Arizonan. She carved an amazing and astonishing legacy while making the lives of those around her far better. Elva’s life was long, rich and prosperous. The gifts she gave to our county and state will be forever cherished. She will be deeply missed by not only the philanthropic community but also the civic and scholastic worlds as well.

REMEMBERING ... 2014 TRENDSETTER

Chrissy Donnelly

Just as we were closing our offices for the summer, we learned of the passing of 2014 Trendsetter Chrissy Donnelly. We knew she had been in a lengthy battle with illness. Yet anyone who knew the talented and beautiful lady, knew she was a true fighter. Chrissy, together with her husband Mark were one of the most beautiful couples on the social scene imaginable. She leaves an impressive business and charitable resume.

In the mid 1990’s I was introduced to Chrissy and Mark Donnelly by Dionne Najafi at a cocktail party. The couple had gained great fame as best-selling authors as part of the collaborative “Chicken Soup” series. They had homes in Hawaii, Arizona and Oregon. Everything they had touched had turned to gold. They were both as beautiful on the inside as they were on the outside and not the least bit affected by their fame.

To list Chrissy Donnelly’s accomplishments would take more pen and ink than is available. A graduate of Oregon State University, she quickly became a CPA and landed an impressive job at Price Waterhouse. It was there that she met her husband, Mark. A chance client luncheon immediately blossomed into romance and marriage. Together they embarked on not only a successful book career but also found success in real estate and film as well. Chrissy had already been a top model in Portland for Nike, Redken and Columbia Sportswear. She had weekly features on countless television shows throughout the Pacific Northwest. She was a true golden girl.

When the Donnelly’s moved permanently to Arizona, Chrissy embarked on a hugely successful philanthropic career. The Phoenix Heart Ball, Childhelp, Make-A-Wish, St. Vincent de Paul, The Phoenix Dream Center, Dancing with the Stars Arizona, Children’s Mirical Network and The Phoenix Library Foundation were just a few of the organizations, she lent her talents to.

Chrissy was always first in line for the scariest rollercoaster, first to jump out of a plane to skydive and first to finish the most severe ski run. Her brilliant smile, zest for life and can-do attitude made her a true stand-out in not only the business world, but also in humanitarian circles. Chrissy shattered the glass ceiling in business and became a guiding force and role model for many women. Her Midas touch in philanthropy left a lasting and indelible mark. She was the last guest to leave the party. Chrissy Donnely will be missed more than I will ever be able to express. We must remember that her time here on earth was far shorter than we wanted. Heaven had far bigger plans for her than we could ever imagine.

Meet the ACI Holiday Luncheon Cochairs

What inspired you two to chair the event together?

We felt it would be a great way to celebrate the Arts, Fashion and Friendship. This luncheon has become such a well loved Holiday Tradition for us and many in the Valley, therefore we were honored to accept this amazing opportunity to create a beautiful afternoon.

Who is this years featured designer/speaker?

We are so excited to have Christian Siriano as our featured designer. We are grateful for the great efforts of Helen Jean, the Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design for Phoenix Art Museum. As one of the few museums with a fashion program in the nation, we are excited to work along side Helen to elevate the vision of ACI.

How did he get his start?

Christian’s journey in the fashion industry is a testament to his creativity and determination. After gaining valuable experience in Annapolis, where he honed his skills in costume design and styling, he took a significant leap by participating in “Project Runway.” His time on the show allowed him to showcase his unique design aesthetic and innovative ideas to a broader audience.

With a passion for fashion and a keen eye for detail, Christian quickly gained recognition for his bold designs and ability to push boundaries. His work often blends theatrical elements with modern fashion, creating pieces that tell a story and capture imagination. Through his journey, he has not only established himself as a talented designer but also as an influential figure in the fashion world, inspiring others to embrace their creativity and pursue their dreams in the arts.

The two of you always look so fashionable, give us some of your favorite places to shop?

Well we do love to shop ... some of our favorites are Neiman Marcus, To Be Continued, Wunderkind and Amy Atelier. These places all offer something different; from local boutiques which we love, to all of the fabulous brands that Neimans provides.

What does fashion mean to you?

Expression. It’s a way to reflect our personality, a mood, a situation or even to send a message. The vast opportunity that fashion provides everyone to self express can be a very valuable tool.

Anything else we should know?

The ACI Holiday Luncheon always sells out! Limited tickets will begin at $500. We will offer VIP tickets at $1500 each, this will allow you access to the VIP party the evening before for an intimate opportunity to meet Christian. Thank you to TBC for this generous donation.

A Generous Gift Given to City of Hope Cancer Center

City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix announced a $100,000 gift from the Richard & Georgiann Ames Family Foundation. The gift will further City of Hope’s mission to expand access to optimal cancer care to more patients, families, and communities in Arizona and will cement its role as one of the most advanced, dedicated cancer research and treatment centers in the region.

“We are grateful to the Ames family for this generous gift and their commitment to transforming cancer care in our community,” said Dr. Kevin Tulipana, President of City of Hope Cancer Center Phoenix. “Because of their generosity, more Arizonans will have access to leading-edge diagnostics, treatments and clinical trials when they need it.”

The Richard & Georgiann Ames Family Foundation is committed to improving the lives of others, through sickness and in health, by donating to cancer research while assisting those families afflicted. The funds for this donation were raised at the foundation’s gala, which launched the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show week. The foundation’s charities of choice were City of Hope and the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund. The foundation has chosen both organizations again, as their recipients for their February 13, 2025, gala at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale to launch the horse show week.

“The Ames Family Foundation is committed to improving the lives of others, through sickness and health,” said Lara Ames, chair of the Richard & Georgiann Ames Family Foundation. “From the many blessings we have received, we firmly believe in providing the same to others.”

The foundation donated an Arabian Horse sculpture, named “Bubbles.” Bubbles was sculptured by Karen Kasper and hand painted by Tina Hillstrom aka Tina O, for the foundation. The life-size Arabian symbolizes the essence of vitality and the jubilant effervescence of lifesustaining oxygen. The “bubbles” on the horse are representative of a flute of champagne or the spheres of air in a Pelegrino, as “we raise our glasses to toast the noble cause of vanquishing cancer and celebrating life.”

The Bubbles Arabian Horse Statue is in the center of the City of Hope Cancer Center gallery in Goodyear. It is strategically located between the clinic (the busiest part of the hospital), on the way to Imaging, Surgery and Radiation. This location was chosen so when patients are going to their appointments, screenings, radiation, or surgery, they can stop and admire Bubbles.

Patients love to read about the meaning of Bubbles, the Ames Foundation’s focus and mission, all in hopes that this majestic creature can calm or sooth a patient before their next appointment – which can be amazing news or news of a continued fight ahead.

About City of Hope:

City of Hope Phoenix is leading the way with a comprehensive cancer hospital in Goodyear, and outpatient locations conveniently located in Gilbert, North Phoenix, and Tatum Ridge.

Patients experience that power of proximity, through the collaboration with the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), combined with access to City of Hope’s coastto-coast clinical network, known for leading-edge cancer care, groundbreaking clinical trials, and superior survival outcomes.

PANDA LUNCHEON 2024

Some of the most beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen in the Valley gathered with their equally impressive children to attend PANDA 2024. The record breaking and sold-out luncheon, held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort, closed out the spring season. Everywhere you looked you saw: Gee Entz, Jen Moser, Sarah Ragland, Geri Farr and hundreds of beautiful ladies just like them. Some of the most dapper gentlemen imaginable were there too. Thank you all for taking the time to look so good. Micheline Etkin did a tremendous job organizing

the festivities from behind stage. Children took to the massive catwalk to strut their stuff to the wonderment of all in attendance. The resort made every effort to impress with a fantastic and well-orchestrated lunch. Champagne flowed like water throughout the opulent afternoon. PANDA – people acting now discover answers, was founded by Robyn DeBell and Penny Gunning in 1999. The volunteer driven organization raises needed funds for medical research to create a brighter future for kids. What a brilliant afternoon!

The Arizona Concours d’Elegance to stage Scottsdale show of exceptional vehicles

A superb showcase of more than 100 rare, exotic and historic automobiles and motorcycles will be on public display on January 19, 2025, when the Arizona Concours d’Elegance rolls onto the grass at the Scottsdale Civic Center.

Some of the greatest examples of motoring from the past and present will be competing for awards in 16 classes, including such iconic marques as Duesenberg, Bugatti, Pierce-Arrow, Ferrari and Jaguar.

The Art of Automotive Engineering is the theme for the seventh edition of the Arizona Concours in partnership with Scottsdale Arts. It will be held for the third year at the recently renovated Scottsdale Civic Center, a picturesque stylish garden party setting with plenty of space for examining the rarely seen dream cars and bikes and, of course, taking photos. Period costumes are encouraged for all attendees with a Concours award for the most enjoyable outfit.

“When we hosted the first Arizona Concours d’Elegance, literally a day after the opening of the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center, we realized that the event and location made for a perfect marriage,” said Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, president and CEO of Scottsdale Arts. “Going into our third year, it has already become one of the main stops on the annual Concours circuit.”

Awards will be presented in each of the 16 classes, along with special awards and the two coveted Best of Show trophies – one for pre-World War II and one for post-war. For a list of the classes and the vehicle-entry registration form, visit ArizonaConcours.org.

Each automotive treasure in the Concours is an authentic example, whether original, restored or period custom, ranging from the earliest runabouts and “horseless carriages,” through the Art Deco era, to the exotic super sports cars of the modern age.

“The 2025 Arizona Concours field will showcase some of the world’s rarest and most-dramatic cars – featuring engineering and design that people rarely have the opportunity to see in person,” said Chuck Stanford Jr., who co-chairs the Concours along with Ed Winkler.

This charity event benefits local artists and art programs, as well as benefiting the Concours longtime partner, Make-A-Wish ® Arizona that grants wishes for children facing life-threatening medical conditions. Some of the children may award a whimsically designed trophy to their favorite vehicle.

For more information about tickets, vehicle entries and sponsorships, visit the Concours website at ArizonaConcours.org. Tickets also are available at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts box office.

A Few Minutes With Debra Nolen

Sometimes you never know

Looking back, If you told Debra L. Nolen, she would go back to college at the age of 40, get invited to a Medical School for a Masters degree in Bioethics, receive a Bachelors Degree and ten days later receive her Master’s Degree, become a college professor of Ethics and finally in 2015 form, with six of her students, a 501 non-profit foundation that would write domestic animal law for the state of Arizona – she would have told you – you were crazy. But here she is, twenty-four years after graduating from both Arizona State University and Midwestern University at the same time, having taught for over 20 years and celebrating that student driven non-profit, DontLeaveMe.org 9th anniversary.

What is Don’t Leave Me?

DontLeaveMe.org is a civic engagement through service-learning legacy project founded by adjunct professor Debra L. Nolen for her Health Care Ethics Course, while teaching at Chandler Gilbert Community College, Spring 2015.

What is the Purpose of Don’t Leave Me

DontLeaveMe.org fosters an exercise in civic engagement through a simple straight forward message – One dog or child left in a hot car to die is one dog or child too many.

What Inspired DontLeaveMe.org?

In 2015 Debra was introduced to service learning –and invited students from her spring class at CGCC to give it a try – she asked her students if they would like to create a public service announcement about the dangers of leaving a dog in a hot car. This, after witnessing a man from New York leave his dog in the car while he ran into PetSmart –it was 109 degrees outside.

Don’t Leave Me Takes Off

One week after her students decided to volunteer for the task, they found themselves in the office of the Maricopa County Sheriff, learning the potential of their PSA. One week after that they were at their first Rescue Event teaching the community about the dangers hot cars pose. It was just the beginning.

The first Domestic Animal Bill

In 2016 Professor Nolen and her student board decided to try their hand at writing a state law that addressed leaving a dog and child unattended in a hot car. Arizona State Senator John Kavanagh took on the invitation and in May of 2017 the Hot Car Good Samaritan Bill SB1001/HB2494 was signed into law becoming ARS § 12-558. 02

What does the Good Samaritan Law do for Arizonans?

ARS § 12-558. 02 allows you to use reasonable force to remove a domestic animal or child from a locked car. To avoid civil action, you must comply with the following:

• Have a good faith belief the confined domestic animal and or child is in imminent danger of suffering physical injury or death unless removed from the car.

• Before you enter car, notify the proper authorities which are but not limited to – calling 911, animal control or your local sheriff’s department.

• Before you act, determine if the car is locked or there is no reasonable way the pet or child can be removed. Use caution if you break a window to enter the car.

• Once you remove the pet or the child you must call the proper authorities and let them know you rescued the child or pet from the car – once removed you must remain with the pet or child until the authorities arrive at the car.

Keeping the Hot Car Awareness Message Alive

Don’t Leave Me celebrates the Good Samaritan Bill by hosting an Annual Hot Car Awareness Campaign, “Take the Pledge” 2024 marks the 8th annual campaign. For more information contact dontleavemeinthecar@ gmail.com using the subject Hot Car Awareness Campaign

Today – Don’t Leave Me Celebrates its ninth year

By creating civic engagement projects oriented toward k-12 students, writing our first donation grants, expanding our brand through Television, Radio, and social media, participating in more live community and rescue events, and sharing the Arizona Legislative Procedures with interested citizens of our great state by continuing to write domestic animal laws.

As for Debra Nolen, she knows you were crazy.

30,000 sq. ft. of fabulous designer treasures. HONORED TO WIN 2024 Best Furniture Consignment Store by Phoenix Home & Garden

MCMASTER: BLOODLINE

The Heard Museum’s new Signature Exhibition, Open Now

Meryl McMaster: Bloodline presents a survey of a remarkable Canadian artist whose pioneering large-scale photographic works reflect her mixed Plains Cree/Métis, Dutch, and British ancestry. This exhibition explores her past and present explorations of family histories, focusing particularly on her Plains Cree female forebears from the Red Pheasant Cree Nation in present-day Saskatchewan.

Women’s Board of HonorHealth

Just before the start of the long hot summer, a group of fine Valley philanthropists gathered at the Arizona Biltmore Resort for cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres. For the last several years, the Women’s Board, an arm of HonorHealth, has created informative and inquisitive gatherings, which include short speeches on state-of-the-art medical programs, groundbreaking devices and innovations. Physicians Rahul Doshi and Stephanie Lindauer spoke of amazing technology and various platforms and advanced medical research. The organization’s CEO Jared Langkilde spoke briefly on “Robots with a Brain” and their germ zapping abilities in hospitals. Chairs Marilyn Alexander and Linda Mattes did a smashing job with the evening’s festivities. The board was founded by Penny Gunning and Ina Manaster, with Laurie Florkiewicz serving as its liaison. A very educational and informative night.

Wine Philosophy and Fun

A midlife crisis is not always a crisis. It can in fact be an opportunity for a dream to come true. A second act you may say. This second act came to fruition for the dynamic duo of Peggy Fiandaca and her husband Curt Dunham. This dream come true is LDV Winery. After very successful careers in consulting, professional community and strategic planning, Peggy and Curt decided 17 years ago to follow their passion for outstanding wines and purchased a twenty acre estate under the breathtaking shadows of the Chiricahua Mountains. There were 5 key locational factors needed for the location to be perfect for wine growing. There had to be a mountain environment that gave a 30 degree temperature difference between daytime and night time temperatures. Plenty of water, superior drainage and volcanic soil. And most importantly, no previous commercial agriculture. All of this nestled at an elevation of 5000 feet.

The absence of any previous agriculture is important because all of the wines produced at LDV are completely vegan. Yes, vegan. There isn’t any manure used as fertilizer so that no animal based products are left to leech into the grapes. LDV Winery produces single varietals only and when they began their journey, they were aware that new plants generally need 4-5 years to produce a commercial crop. To their amazement they sent a wine to Wine Spectator just a short 2 years into the process and it received a score of 87 deeming the wine “plush” as the ultimate compliment! The winery produces only Syrah, Petite Syrah and Grenache. A limited amount of their white variety Viognier is also available. Their commitment to exquisite wines is evident in the attention to detail the phenomenal wine making skills of Curt Dunham impart. Single cordon pruning results in less product but abundantly flavored grapes. Endless combinations of French Oak, Neutral Oak and Stainless Steel barrels result in complex and dreamy wines. The

wines are also very low in sulfites as no fining agents, eggs etc. are used to reduce sediment. The wines are also “racked” to remove sediment every 60 days where the wine is removed, barrels cleaned and sterilized, and returned to their barrels to finish out the aging process.

The tasting room in the Riverfront district of Scottsdale was opened roughly 5 years ago after the first location on 1st and Goldwater couldn’t sustain enough traffic. The attention to detail and the excellent and knowledgeable staff are attentive and friendly. There are also options for charcuterie and delicious chocolates. As Peggy says, “We strive to be the first drink of the evening, not the last.” Drop in for one of the most unique wine tasting experiences and drink in the history of a winery that unlike most wineries does the entire process on premises. There are no imports, no exports. They never buy plants and are still using the original vines they started with 17 years ago. Upon seeing almost identical soil in France the winemaker asked how long they had been producing. When they answered 15 he excitedly asked “Generations!?” “Years” they responded. If you ask me, generations of this spectacular winery wouldn’t be enough but luckily for all of us, it is

here and ready to provide even the most particular wine enthusiast a divine experience. Peggy and Curt strive to surround themselves with “Wine Minded” people and you will definitely feel like part of the family

A Silver Jubilee of Giving: The Board of Visitors Care Card Celebrates 25 Years

Arizona’s most cherished charity shopping event, Care Card prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary. This milestone marks a quarter-century of philanthropy, during which The Board of Visitors Care Card program has raised over $4.1 million for local charities.

From October 18th through October 27, 2024, shoppers can once again join this beloved tradition by purchasing a Care Card for $60. This card grants access to 20% discounts at hundreds of participating retailers and restaurants, making it the perfect opportunity to shop and dine while supporting a worthy cause.

And this year’s silver jubilee offers something extra special: every Care Card purchase includes entry into the “10 Days of Care Card Daily Raffle,” with daily prizes of gift cards valued between $500 and $1,000, and two grand prizes of $2,500 in cash. It’s an exciting way to save money and give back at the same time.

This year, Care Card proceeds support The BIG Pink Bus, a 3D mobile mammography unit, a new program of Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center. The importance of the bus cannot be overstated. It delivers life-saving breast cancer screenings to underserved women across the Valley, reduces access barriers and connects them to comprehensive care when needed.

“Care Card is much more than a shopping event. It is a testament to the generosity of retailers, restaurants,

sponsors, and shoppers who come together year after year to improve and save lives in our community. We are deeply grateful,” say Co-Chairs Shannon Goldwater and Sarah Shannon.

Join us for the Care Card Kickoff on October 18, from 9-12 at Bungalow Furniture and Accessories (15330 Hayden Road, Scottsdale). Tour The BIG Pink Bus and dive into unbeatable shopping and exclusive savings as we launch this incredible event!

PHOENIX ART MUSEUM PARTY IN THE GARDEN

A rakish crowd of ladies and gentlemen gathered at the Phoenix Art Museum. In the entryway the sounds of pianist Luke Holton drifted down the stone hallway to the cocktail reception in the Greenbaum Lobby and Steele Gallery. The cocktail reception, which lasted an hour and a half was a brilliant choice. One hour is just too short. Since the Pandemic has tripled our cities population, this gives merrymakers more time to reach their event and have more than one glass of champagne. George Abrams did the menu and it was grand. When was the

last time you were served Chicken Kiev under the stars. Smashing! The Dorrance Sculpture garden proved the perfect answer for a lovely spring dinner. Linda Cohn and Jordan Rose tied for the best jewels of the evening. Carrie Hulburd was stunning in pink and with dazzling marabou feathers. Heidi Teets snuck in managing to evade our photographers. and did she look beautiful! Zaza West kept everyone on the dance floor until dawn’s early light. Kelly and Steve Ellman pledged a generous gift for a rather large expansion of the museum. We are so lucky to live here!

OCEAN 44 2024 TRENDSETTER LUNCHEON

It’s no secret that Ocean 44 in Scottsdale is closed for lunch. But if you have friends in high places such as Jennifer Moser and Oliver Badgio, you might just get lucky. So, the other afternoon the swank restaurant made an exception and opened their doors to the Trendsetters of 2024. They included: Deanna Biddulph, Wendy Dewane, Cathy Dickey, Anne-Marie Dobbs, Amy Hair, Karen Hayenga, Joy Johnson, Bari Mears, Andrea Moseley and Carey Pena, who was unfortunately under the weather. Our 2024 Fabulous Phoenicians Joan and Jerry Colangelo had a prior engagement. Fine champagne welcomed all,

including the Trends Magazine staff and the Trends Charitable Fund board. It was a brilliant and festive afternoon. We are so proud to welcome these 10 ladies who have done so much to make our community a better place for so many others. The food, discussion and flowers from the White House design studio were all tremendous! A very special thank you to Ocean 44 for everything you did to make the afternoon simply splendid! Our sincere compliments to pastry chef Christine Conner for her tremendous key lime pie and other confections.

American Heart Association

• The night of Phoenix Heart Ball 2013, Diane and Bruce Halle  were honored as Philanthropists of the Year for the Western States Affiliate of the AHA. Additionally, Dr. Ted Diethrich accepted the inaugural 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award in Cardiovascular Science and Medicine from the AHA and Phoenix Heart Ball.

• 2016: The AHA releases its first-ever scientific statement recommending sugar limits for kids. It states that children and teens should consume less than 6 teaspoons of added sugars a day and drink no more than 8 ounces of sugary beverages a week.

• 2022: An AHA scientific statement is released, urging action be taken to reduce or prevent e- cigarette use among adolescents to lower lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease.

• 2023: Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffers a cardiac arrest on the field during Monday Night Football. His inspiring story of survival raises awareness about the importance of knowing CPR and having AEDs in public places, and leads to an AHA movement to create a Nation of Lifesavers through expanded training across U.S.

Lynne Love 2012

“The 2012 Committee Theme was “Put A Little Love in Your Heart”. We had the Committee Kick off on Valentine’s Day also celebrating Arizona’s 100th birthday of statehood. Our featured speaker was Sam Fox, now the recent Global Ambassador Hotel founder, who shared details of his recent heart attack, at just over forty. Our focus was for funding research and education for preventative heart and stroke strategies and the Halle Heart Children’s Museum.”

Phoenix Heart Ball 2012-2023 –Still creating “Firsts”!

• 2012: First Men’s Event – Fundraising and fun for the guys to tour the Pope Car Museum.

• 2013: Heart Rock was a donor cultivation event on the rooftop of the Hotel Palmar in downtown Phoenix hosted by our Honorary Chairman Sam Fox. Nearly 350 urban chic Valley residents attended the live music event which netted proceeds of $29,000 and raised awareness of the Phoenix Heart Ball among attendees.

• 2013: We conducted a year-long Community Give-Back program at Fox Restaurant Concepts locations. Each month at a different location, heart healthy menu items were promoted and a portion of the proceeds from those items were donated to the Phoenix Heart Ball.

• 2014: Initiated the Peggy Goldwater Award and Introduced as well as Pulse a monthly newsletter.

• 2021: First Golf Tournament held

Susan Doria 2013

“The number thirteen, as in 2013, is considered by many and throughout history to be good luck. Thus, I selected the word serendipity – good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries – as the 2013 theme. Our goal for the year was to create serendipitous events where people could gather to enjoy a good meal and perhaps some great music and unexpectedly discover the importance of heart health and the Phoenix Heart Ball!”

Howard

“Share Your Heart” was my theme with the color red and a little Tartan Plaid. Some unique touches were the first course was a large heart shaped ice block with drilled holes for a tin of caviar and a little bottle of vodka. We had men in kilts at almost every event. We had an all-white ballroom (including the floor) with large white paper flowers on the back wall and a red grand piano front and center.”

Kimberly Afkhami 2015

“My Heart Ball year was focused on heart disease in children and bringing attention to the Halle Heart Children’s Museum which had fun/ interactive exhibits that focused on healthy habits, such as eating healthy and exercising.”

Jennifer Carmer 2016

“The theme for the 57th Heart Ball was “Hearts in Rhythm”. Celebrating the generations of Phoenix Heart Ball women and their spirit of volunteerism, creativity, perseverance, and energy. The colors were pink, grey, and gold with a touch of leopard print. In 2016, the Arizona State Legislature passed AZ bill SB1337 that required graduating students to complete hands-only CPR training. The 2016 Heart Ball focused on raising dollars to help fund this life-saving CPR training for Arizona high schools’ students.”

Char Hubble 2017

“Each year the Heart Ball Chairman selects a theme for her ball. Mine was Infinite Hearts. The unity of infinite heart underscores the importance of collective action in curing heart disease. By fostering a sense of connection, awareness, and compassion among attendees these themes not only raise awareness, but also inspire individuals to come together in support of this crucial cause. Through the Heart Ball we unite against heart disease.”

Carolyn Jackson 2018

“I was honored to serve as the 2018 Heart Ball Chairman. My theme was Driven Hearts – an award-winning awareness campaign that reached millions and raised millions in an effort to slam the brakes on heart disease and stroke. Nancy Brown, the C.E.O. of the American Heart Association, attended the Heart Ball to acknowledge our important work.”

Kristine Thompson 2019

“Chairing the 60th HB was such an honor for me since my mom had chaired the 45th HB. My theme was “Sixty Hearts” in honor of all the women who had come before me. I wanted to encourage people to “know their numbers” as so much of heart disease is preventable. The 60th ball was the first ball to have an after party that was open to all the guests – thanks to my friends at The Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas. My husband, Shane and I were excited to surprise everyone with McDonald’s French fries during the dancing.”

Jennifer with her husband, Brent

Amanda Garmany 2022

Jennifer Moser 2020-2021

“My theme was “Remembering Hearts: Past, Present and Future” for those we’ve lost, taking care of ourselves today and teaching our children for the future. I chaired for two years after we postponed the ball halfway through 2020 due to Covid. In 2021, things were still heavily restricted, and many companies couldn’t sponsor in person events, so we had to get creative with fundraising. Shortages and restrictions were a challenge for planning but overall, it was a huge sold-out success.”

“My mission was Hope for the Future! I wanted to address childhood obesity; to teach them about heart disease and healthy living as they could be the first generation to NOT outlive their parents! I may have also been the only Executive Committee Member to serve 4 years in a row ... due to Covid!!!”

with her husband, Dana

Charlene Berge-Blum 2023

“My theme was “Accelerating Change” to help accelerate the awareness and funds needed in Arizona for heart disease and stroke. I had an incredible executive team and committee filled with such passion and dedication, determined to make an impact in our community. It was such an honor and privilege to be Chairman of the 2023 Heart Ball.”

I Am Here, Why

In 2012 and again in 2020, local philanthropists Scott and Marla Berger created the Tree of Life Movement Foundation. Since then, the dynamic couple has embarked on their fascinating book I Am Here, Why? Rich with various collections of antidotes, stores and fine tales, the books hold well in today’s hectic world.

Initially the Intention Stick which they created in 2012 is based on the notion and point to encourage and help people grow in every way possible. In 2020 they took their cause and philosophy a step further and created their foundation. The program works with relief agencies to help the organization grow and expand from their work. It has had a tremendous effect on at-risk children as well.

The Tree of Life Movement and Intention Stick together with their mission is to unify humanity in a collective measure, through global and spiritual awaking thought power and purpose. This book serves as an excellent guide to a positive connection the universe as one.

Cartographers

Local author and already tremendously famous and accoladed Peng Shepherd has done it yet again. In her latest offering Cartographers, Ms. Shepherd grabs the reader early on and makes it next to impossible to put the book down.

After the discovery of an ancient map in her late father’s desk, the central character Nell Young embarks on a quest of secrets, intrigue and even murder. Originally, she believes the map to be worthless. Years earlier it was the result of a falling out with her father, the nation’s leading cartographer, Nell quickly discovers the map holds far more. Just as you think you have figured out the plot, it totally flips and heads off in a different direction. It is that good!

Cartography is the creation and study of maps. Things vastly changed in 1990 with the introduction of GPS or Global Positioning Systems, which now use satellites rather than stars to navigate. Cartography is far from a lost art form. This book is not only educational on the subject but gives a glimpse into a cherished and cloistered world few ever thought of. The book is a spellbinding thriller with the turn of every page.

ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY – PETS OF THE MONTH

Stormy

Stormy is sure to bring a whirlwind of kitten cuteness to his future home! This adorable 13-week-old gray shorthair kitten came to the Arizona Humane Society as an owner surrender earlier this year, along with three other kitties, when his previous owner could no longer care for them.

Because he can be a bit head shy at times, Stormy would benefit from a patient home that allows him to go at his own pace. Despite his shyness, he is overall very healthy and would likely thrive best in a home with an outgoing cat to help him come out of his shell. If you’re looking for a gentle companion and are willing to give Stormy the time and space he needs to feel secure, he could be the perfect addition to your family.

Meet Stormy at AHS’ Papago Park Campus location off Loop 202 and Van Buren St. in Phoenix. His adoption fee is $225, visit azhumane.org/ adopt for more information.

Target

With ears that can hear you coming from a mile away, Target is sure to make a big impression on everyone she meets! The adorably spirited six-month-old Bull Terrier mix has a lot of love left to give despite going through such a tragic occurrence at such a young age.

Earlier this year, the Arizona Humane Society’s Field Team was alerted to a set of pups that were living on their own but being cared for by neighbors. Upon arrival at the shelter, it was found that their owner sadly passed away and there was no one else to care for the adorable duo.

An initial exam in AHS’ trauma hospital showed that she was healthy and full of energy. As loving as her ears are big, Target is sure to make a wonderful companion for a home that is willing to help her get her wiggles out with lots of playtime, treats and cuddles.

Meet Target at AHS’ new Papago Park Campus location off Loop 202 and Van Buren St. in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $349, visit azhumane. org/adopt for more information.
