The Season October to June
In my 30 years at Trends, I have never seen a season like this one. The pandemic took away almost all things from the fundraising world, but it’s back with a vengeance! There were weekends in March and April where there were more than four events each night, which I don’t get, when January and February are practically empty of galas and balls. I wish things could be spaced out a little better. We do our best to try to give the majority of events a complimentary full page, but this season was simply madness. You get the picture. Anway, this is the most anticipated issue of the year. We bring back the Trends 2024 Best Dressed List and profiles on our Fabulous Phoenicians and Trendsetters, too. The issue also returns to my personal favorite close of the season, Trashy Summer Retro Read.
As we close the social season, I wanted to stop and highlight a young lady in Paradise Valley who is already making such a difference in our community. Bella Zamora, at 14 years old, has already proved her commitment to philanthropy. A few years ago, she started building doll houses. Her hobby soon proved a special talent with a stylistic advantage. Today she is still creating magic but has decided to donate her magnificent houses to local charities for auction. Her simple slogan: “Making a Difference in Miniature.” Just the other afternoon more than 1,300 of the most beautiful women and handsome gentlemen got to see Miss Zamora’s exceptional creations at the PANDA Luncheon.
Everybody swooned! She has also created a home for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and plans another for Childhelp next season. Bella can be followed on Instagram at @liveoutlittle. This is absolutely brilliant!
From all of us at Trends Magazine and the Trends Charitable Fund, we hope you have a safe and pleasant summer. We will see you back here in October.
GOTCHA ...
Early morning shoppers at AJ’s Fine Foods on Lincoln Dr. were quite horrified to listen to the demands of a Chicago transplant. Eventually the beautifully dressed and overserved from the night prior patron, was demanding that the store create a Bloody Mary for her at the deli counter. She raged on and on about how this would never happen in Chicago. When her demands turned into four letter demands she was quickly escorted away. Why has Phoenix become a dumping ground for out-of-state transplants with bad attitudes and superiority complexes? Sadly, it’s only going to worsen.

Meet The Wunderkind
How did you get into the fashion industry?
My first job ever was working for a woman named Beth Honig who had a consignment store in my town called The Emperor’s Old Clothes. I was 14. I answered an ad in the local paper looking for someone to be an eBay lister for the company and thought, “I can do this”. Beth would drop off black trash bags full of goodies and I would photograph the pieces, measure them, create descriptions and list it all on eBay for sale. There were Hermès dress shirts, Alaïa skirts, Prada shoes. This began my deep appreciation for the finer things in life – it was the first time I was able to get my paws on merchandise of this ilk and I loved it. From then on, the obsession grew in intensity and I decided that I wanted to become a fashion designer. I went to FIT in New York and majored in fashion design. I thought I wanted to be a designer until I walked into Jeffrey New York one evening after class. I applied for a job and was hired as a part-time cashier several months later. This is where my career in retail began.
Who inspired your craft?
Well, I guess the story begins with my mother. My mom has always been a shopper and I used to accompany her on shopping trips to Manhattan. We’d go to Henri Bendel, Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, and Bloomingdale’s. We were not wealthy but my mother always had a love of designer clothing and loved to look at it. My sister was a tomboy so I was mom’s shopping buddy. Shopping with my mom was a way of bonding with her and I never passed up an opportunity to tag along. My mom also had an unhealthy obsession with footwear: one of my most vivid memories from when I was a child was opening mom’s closet when she wasn’t home and gazing wide-eyed at her collection of red Charles Jourdan shoe boxes.
Do you have a favorite designer or designers?
I’ve always loved Dries Van Noten, Azzedine Alaïa, and Narciso Rodriguez. I’m also a fashion history geek and love the work of Halston, Madame Grès, Geoffrey Beene and Bill Blass.
Why did you decide to open Wunderkind?
I grew up in luxury retail and learned from the best in the biz, Jeffrey Kalinsky and Elyse Walker. After 13 years of buying multiple product categories for these two legendary retailers, I finally felt ready to do my own thing. I knew that that my deep experience could now be translated into a store of my very own. When I decided to open Wunderkind, I wanted to open one in a geographic location that did not already have a similar store. Scottsdale was a place I often visited and I could see the
potential in this special destination. I took a leap of faith and it has definitely paid off. Wunderkind is now two years old and I thank the people of Arizona for supporting my dream!
Tell us about the store.
At Wunderkind, we carrys designer ready-to-wear, advanced contemporary, luxury shoes and handbags, fine jewelry, eyewear, and home accents. I wanted to carry everything because I wanted my clients to be able to buy anything from a tank top to an evening gown. We specialize in wardrobing and like to be able to put together head-to-toe outfits for our clients, whether we are dressing them for work, play or a special event. The store is a manageable size and we emphasize service and the personal touch. Every item (literally, every item) is hand-selected by me. That said, each piece we carry is in the store for a reason.
Where would you like to be in 5 years?
I’d love to eventually expand the Scottsdale location. I’ve always wanted to have a little lunch spot attached to the store and would love to carry menswear, too. It would be nice to open more locations in other places that could use a store but I’ve got my arms full at the moment.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Hermès. No further explanation needed.
What 7 people living or dead would you invite to your dinner party?
Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Lee Alexander McQueen, Linda Evangelista, L’Wren Scott, Beyoncé, David Sedaris.

The Show Must Go On!
By Patsy Lowry
“You are stronger than you think you are.” – Superman
Six, longtime, very good friends were invited to lunch at my art studio. They are all accomplished and recognized Superstars in the Arizona art community. We share a mutual love of art. I was so excited and really looking forward to hearing about their ideas, experiences and perceptions about art.
A little over an hour before my guests were to arrive: CATASTROPHE!!!!!!
All of a sudden, what I thought was going to be a wonderful occasion turned into a horrifying experience. I lost it all! My car, my cellphone, my wallet, my identification, my credit cards, cash etc. I had nothing!
I had been parked in front of my art studio complex, helping to get my husband Ed out of my car, step up onto the sidewalk and get situated on his walker. A man and a woman were seated on a low wall nearby. The man came over and asked if he could help Ed. I was appreciative and thanked him. He proceeded to help Ed while I went to the back of my car to close the liftgate. As soon as the liftgate was closed, the woman ran past me, got into the driver’s seat, the man jumped into the passenger seat and off they drove. I ran after my car but they were too fast for me and got away. I was CARJACKED right in front of my eyes. How often have we heard, “I never thought it would happen to me.”
I knew that I had to calm down, breathe deeply, regroup and figure out my new priorities. My agenda had completely changed. I went from hostess to victim. I told Ed to sit on his walker and wait for me while I went to find a neighbor so that I could use his phone and call the police. Fortunately, I found a concerned neighbor who let me use his cellphone. I called 911, described the robbers, gave a description of my car, the license plate, make, model, year, color etc. and said that I would sign papers to prosecute.
I rushed back to the front of the condo complex to find Ed. He was doing well. Much to my surprise, two police cars immediately pulled up. I repeated all that I had told the 911 operator. I signed papers stating that I would, indeed, prosecute. The policemen made several phone calls and then asked me if Ed and I would go with them to identify two suspects just taken into custody. We agreed. Ed got into one police car and I got into the other one. After about ten minutes, we arrived at a parking lot where there were already four police cars awaiting our arrival. The policeman left us in their police cars and went to speak with the other policemen. When he returned, he told me to stay in his car and asked if I could identify the male suspect. When I had seen the man standing by my car, he was wearing a felt hat, reflective sunglasses and a loose jacket. The handcuffed man standing outside of the police car was bald, not wearing sunglasses and no jacket. I couldn’t identify him.
When I saw the woman at my art studio complex, she had a beautiful French braid and was wearing a beige, plaid shirt. Now, less than a half hour later, the woman standing outside of the police car had on a different shirt, and her hair was tied in a topknot on the top of her head. I couldn’t identify either suspect for certain. The policeman then asked me if I had a BB gun in the back seat? “No,” I replied. The man had it tucked inside his pants and the jacket covered it. They were both hardcore, professional criminals with numerous arrests. Both suspects have been in prison for many major offenses. Very scary and unsettling!
Time elapsed while Ed and I waited in our respective police cars. I wondered what my guests would think when they arrived for lunch and no one was at my studio? I was not relaxed.
The favorite question of my life always has always been, “Patsy, Will you marry me?” My new, second favorite question (61 years later) was, “Are these your car keys?” HOORAY for the Phoenix Police Department and the fine Officers that quickly, efficiently and safely captured the suspects, they returned my car to me with EVERYTHING in it.
They were able to trace my car because my cellphone was on and I have GPS. Fortunately, the suspects didn’t throw it out the window onto the street. The policeman told me that I should NEVER, EVER leave my keys in my car, even at the gas station. For the rest of my life, I never will. We returned to my studio just before my friends were about to arrive. Since I was the hostess, I had a decision to make. Cancel the luncheon or go forward and have it? I decided to go forward. When my guests arrived, I told them what had just happened. How fortunate I am to have had such great, understanding and helpful friends. Everyone pitched in and we had an amazing time. We will never forget that memorable luncheon at my studio. Soon afterward, one of my friends emailed me and said “Thank you Patsy. The luncheon was perfect, except for the carjacking.”
Please be careful, safe and resilient. Sometimes it takes courage to deal with the unexpected and be an effective hostess! The Show Must Go On!

BALLET ARIZONA 2024
The Phoenix Art Museum played host on a beautiful spring night for Ballet Arizona. Dance With Me, as the gala is widely known, brought out a blue-ribbon crowd of some of the greatest philanthropists and patrons of the arts. Event planner extraordinaire George Abrams did a masterful job seeing to every detail of the evening. Guests gathered in the opulent entryway of the stately museum before moving to dinner and dancing under the stars. The proceeds served to fund Ballet
Arizona and that made this huge crowd very happy. Kate Groves chaired the bash and did a phenomenal job from start to finish. Grant Almquist and David Michael Miller were the most dapper men in the room. Harriett Friedland stole the evening in scarlet red. Everyone was thrilled to see Patty Dion, since we have not seen this lovely and charming lady in quite some time. What a night!

Table Setting Showcased
By Susan Mayer
Neiman Marcus Scottsdale home stylist, Susan Mayer, used organic shapes and materials to create this modern desert tablescape for spring. Inspired by her natural surroundings here in Arizona, Susan mixed different patterns & textures featuring pieces from brands Jan Barboglio and L’Objet to complete the look.
“I wanted to bring nature indoors and really create a new luxe vision for spring.” said Susan who curates a new tablescape each season for the magazine. “Mixing natural materials like cast iron and handmade pottery gives the table a modern Southwest feel.”

THE BOARD OF VISITORS BALL 2024
A slew of very grand people made their way to the Camelback Inn for an opulent evening. The Board of Visitors109th annual ball presented 41 beautiful Flower Girls to society on a splendid spring evening. Chairman of the Board of Visitors Pam Kolbe smashing in lavender and mixed flora to the ground, made sure she welcomed all in attendance. Chairman of the 2024 ball Betsy Moore looked fetching in fuchsia and together with Dennis Thompson of White House Design Studio, created absolute wonderment on the terrace and ballroom. Guests mixed and mingled prior to the anticipated Flower Girl presentation. A sea of beautiful young ladies in white, were presented to society. Everyone swooned! More cocktails and champagne followed. Dinner and dancing rounded out the posh affair. Kate Arthur, Kari Denk Stephanie McRae and Robin Synder stole the evening spotlight in a heart-stopping array of memorable ball gowns. Mark Snyder proved the most dapper gentleman in attendance too. 22 local charities benefited from the grand night which should have made all involved very pleased. No one does it better than The Board of Visitors. That’s why they are the oldest and most important charity in our state. You should have been there!

The Phoenix Heart Ball 2002-2011
American Heart Association
• 2003 First International Office opened
• 2004 “Go Red for Women” created for awareness of how heart disease affects women
• Nobel Prize winners funded by AHA: 2003, 2007, 2008 and 2011
• 2007 The AHA approves a new mission statement emphasizes the importance of helping people live healthier, in addition to saving lives: “Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.”
• 2008 New recommendations that bystanders can skip mouth-tomouth and use Hands-Only CPR to help an adult who collapses suddenly.
• 2010 The AHA announces a major to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent by 2020.
• 2011 Halle Heart Children’s Museum in Phoenix opens
Carole Moreno 2002
“The Phoenix Heart Ball was/is so important to me, as heart disease touches virtually all of our lives, whether it affects our families, our friends, or even ourselves. My mother was afflicted, and even had a heart event the week of my chairmanship. It was a reminder to be very grateful for the support received.”
Carole and Arte Moreno
Phoenix Heart Ball 2002 - 2011 Traditions were born!
• First time the Kick-Off event held at Saks Fifth Avenue with a breakfast and fashion show.
• First time we had 2 Vice Chairs which continues even today
• Free heart scans were provided to committee members and spouses to quickly check for signs of a heart blockage. (A few were discovered!)
• Infant CPR kits were created, named and marketed as “Have a Heart for Babies”. The kits contained an infant mannequin, an instructional DVD and were free to new parents when they left the hospital.
• The community was educated about The Widowmaker, a sneaky, deadly heart attack that usually strikes young healthy men without warning! Joe Montana had been diagnosed with signs of The Widowmaker and a magazine cover photo shoot was arranged with Joe and that year’s chairman along with a fascinating interview.
Christine Gustafson 2003
“My mission was to “Cherish our Donors” and my theme was “Cor Ad Cor Loquitor” Latin for “Heart Speaks to Heart”. I was so thrilled to have my parents attend the ball. The Austrian decor & dinner inspiration came from my mother’s Austrian heritage.”

Sandy Magruder 2004
“We wore red attire to all our events my year in honor of the AHA “Go Red for Women” campaign being started. It was a family affair that year, because both of my daughters served on the committee, which was very meaningful to me.”
Sandy and Mac Magruder
Libby Cohen 2005
“My mother has utilized a pacemaker for almost 40 years and because of it is living her 93rd year. Now my husband Joel depends on a pacemaker as well. These devices are tiny miracles that save so many lives and would not be possible without the American Heart Association. With the theme, “Hearts in Harmony,” my focus was to promote a balanced lifestyle for better heart health.”

Jane Christensen 2006
“In addition to the Heart Ball, we had an ancillary event my year called Kid’s Ball that focused on healthy diet and exercise. It was an outdoor sports experience at ASU that children and their parents participated in and raised over $200,000 as well as educating them.”
Susie Wesley 2007
“My dad had a massive heart attack at 50 and an emergency triple bypass. A few months later he walked me down the aisle and lived another 26 happy, healthy years. My little sister was the youngest baby to have open heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester in 1960. She survived, thrived, and has two beautiful adult daughters!”
“Because the economy was crashing we had to re-align with new economic realities in fundraising, so we tried some new strategies, including a small side event called Heart Beat on Canal Street. We also did small, personal, in-home events with groups of new donors, which brought us new income. In addition we were very careful with expenses while still wanting to stage a beautiful Heart Ball. As a result, we had record net revenues while maintaining a15% expense ratio.”
Beth McRae 2009
“I chaired the 50th Anniversary of the Phoenix Heart Ball. We had a magnificent display of Past Heart Ball Chairmen gowns in the Phoenician foyer spanning the years from 1970 to 2009. We also had a video shown in the ballroom celebrating the 50 years of Ball. We focused on CPR in schools and the Halle Heart Children’s Museum.”
Beth McRae and Bill Dougherty
Sarah Suggs 2010
“Childhood Obesity was the focus of my year. The “Heart Ball 100” committee celebrated the Halle Heart Children’s Museum opening. With my theme of “Grace and Gratitude,” Peter Duchin and his orchestra performed in the ballroom filled with an autumn color palette.”
Sarah Suggs and John Jay Fetzer
Julie Prusak 2011
“My theme was “Passion with Purpose”. I led a committee of 100 women leaders to channel their passion to raise funds to eradicate heart disease. There was an emphasis on prevention through education since 80% of heart disease is preventable.”

Mariah Carey – 764486
As gorgeous as the superstar she is named after, Mariah Carey has been through quite a rough journey on the road to finding her forever home. And although she may not be able to hit the high notes quite as well as her namesake, the lovely three-year-old Siberian Husky loves “singing” to all those who will listen.
Mariah was picked up by an Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ in March of this year after she was found as an injured stray. Not only was she not putting weight on her front right leg, she was found to be underweight. Upon examination in the shelter’s trauma hospital, it was determined that her leg was beyond saving and needed amputation.
Almost a week after her surgery, Mariah has been adjusting extremely well and has never lost her bubbly spirit.
A true testament to lives saved at AHS thanks to the community’s support, this sweet girl may only have three paws but she has plenty of love left to give!
Edith – 745487
As gorgeous and unique as her markings, Edith sure knows how to stun a room! The absolutely beautiful seven-year-old Tortoiseshell is hoping there is a family who knows how wonderful senior pets are and how much love they have to give.
Originally rescued by Arizona Humane Society Cruelty Investigators in July of 2023 when she was abandoned, Edith has found her way back to the shelter recently as an owner surrender due to having some medical issues. Upon examination in the shelter’s trauma hospital, she was found to have kidney stones that were removed surgically.
Those who know Edith say she is a sweet girl who can be a bit shy at first and would be best with a slow introduction to the family, including other kitties in the home. An enjoyer of the finer things in life, the gorgeous cat loves watching birds through the window while perched in her favorite kitty condo.
Meet Edith and Mariah Carey at AHS’ South Mountain Campus location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. Visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.

ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY – PETS OF THE MONTH
The Love Machine
By Jacqueline Susann
In 1966 Jacqueline Susann shocked the world with Valley of the Dolls. The novel would become the largest piece of fiction sold in the 20th century and change the way books were written. Three years later she released The Love Machine. The double entendre title reflected the love machine a television set and the book’s main character Robin Stone. Stone is a ruthless and promiscuous network television executive. The novel is said to be loosely based on one time CBS president James Aubrey.
Jacqueline Susann does not hold back in this book for a second. Valley of the Dolls is tame in comparison. The shop, bed hop and name drop formula takes on a new dimension in The Love Machine. Beautiful women and men are extorted, coerced, and ultimately doomed by Robin Stone in his quest to be the number one network in the nation. But in the end the walls come tumbling down for even him
The Love Machine is a brilliant tale of everything bad. Bain de Soleil suntan oil seems to ooze from its pages. The smell of cigarette smoke is ever present. Psychiatrists drift in and out. Booze is preferred over morning coffee and Seconal are popped perpetually like tic-tacs throughout. The books stayed at number one throughout the late 1960s and early 70s. Critics said it was Ms. Susann’s finest hour. She would pen one more international bestseller, Once Is Not Enough, in 1972. She died in 1974 at only 56 of breast cancer. Harold Robbins and Sidney Sheldon would quickly try to fill her shoes, but then again there was only one Jacquline Susann. Available on Amazon.
