LA DOLCE VITA

The Season October to June

Online social calendar: www.trendspublishing.com/social-calendar

Welcome back! From all of us at Trends and the Trends Charitable Fund, we hope you had a great holiday season. It was a time for all of us to reflect and give thanks. Incidentally, the Trends Charitable Fund was able to lend their financial support to several Valley charities because of the great success of our event, An Evening of Trends. We were delighted to help.

During the Christmas season there are a lot of parties and open houses. The other night I had the opportunity to be invited to a gathering that had not been held since 2019. Prior to the pandemic guests at this opulent party were definitely dressed. Ladies were in festive holiday and cocktail attire with gentlemen in sports coats, turtlenecks, and ties. When the party returned for the first time in several years, I was absolutely horrified to see how the majority of guests arrived and departed, with puffy ski vests, pullover sweaters, yoga pants and sneakers! Dear God! Two people who are inductees on the Trends Magazine Best Dressed List, the oldest list in the state, rushed over when they saw me. Both couldn’t have looked any better and both were shellshocked at the appearance of the majority of the

guests. Ladies and gentlemen, this is not okay. I don’t care what Covid did to dismantle dressing up the United States. They were disrespectful and lazy people, without any regard for the hostess and host, who by the way looked smashing, Unbelievable!

In cocktail polo news you should know ...

That an attractive brunette socialite and retired real estate agent, has resurfaced. More than 23 years ago, she left a scathing voicemail on our PBX system. I returned her call, which immediately went to voice mail. I explained that she had the wrong person and her facts were totally incorrect. She has spent the last two decades running into ballrooms when she sees me. The other night, at an opulent Paradise Valley holiday party, our eyes locked. She quickly opened a French door and disappeared into the house. Call me anytime, malicious, I see we still have you running scared!

A NIGHT IN THE VALLEY 2024

A Night in the Valley, Valleywise Health Foundation’s signature philanthropic event held November 9, 2024, celebrated healthcare heroes and raised a record-breaking $1.2 million to support graduate medical education and the Valleywise Health mission. Co-chaired by Anne C. Stupp and Nita Francis, with honorary co-chairs Carrie and Jon Hulburd and Amy and Tim Louis. Guests enjoyed performances by

Sidney Bird, Tyler Dial, and Mitchell Tenpenny, with Letitia Frye as emcee and auctioneer. Highlights included auctions, a Gift of Hope paddle raise, and presentation of the Arizona Legacy Award to the Louis Family in honor of the late Dr. Herbert Johnson Louis’s inspiring legacy and his contributions to healthcare and graduate medical education.

ACI HOLIDAY LUNCHEON 2024

The Arizona Costume Institute was fortunate enough to secure the talents of co-chairs Barbara Lytle and Catherine Tuton this year. Their smashing touch on all-things high fashion took the luncheon to a new level! The event traditionally held at the Phoenix Art Museum, moved to the posh conference center at The Arizona Biltmore Resort. It’s hard to believe that this ballroom, which seats around 500 people, was once the largest in all of Arizona. Designer Christian Siriano brought the house down with a witty and often hilarious stage interview. Both

chairs for the lovely afternoon dressed in Mr. Siriano’s gowns too. Here are a few ladies that blew it up! Jordan Rose, Moll Anderson (a sight for sore eyes,) Miriam Sukhman, Karen Harris and Missy Anderson They stole the show in marvelous outfits. Honorary Chair Jacquie Dorrance looked stunning! Proceeds from the luncheon served to benefit fashion exhibitions and programs at Phoenix Art Museum. You should have been there!

TRENDS/TRENDS CHARITABLE FUND 24TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY COCKTAIL PARTY

Every December Trends Magazine and the Trends Charitable Fund (TCF) stop to thank the new Fabulous Phoenicians and Trendsetters. This gathering also includes all past TCF presidents, past event chairs, current board of directors and Pagoda Lane, our official gift ambassador. Robert’s Catering didn’t disappoint, but then again, he never

does. Hors d’ oeuvres and cocktails flowed and many reflected on the fine things the TCF has done to improve the community. Our official emcee, the famed and beautiful Lin Sue Flood, was on hand to greet what seemed the entire party. What a beautiful night to thank so many who have made such a difference.

The Celebrate Youth Gala is Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale’s signature fundraising event. What makes the 2025 Gala particularly special?

Andrea & Beth: We’re thrilled to bring this year’s Gala to the beautifully remodeled Phoenician resort on March 29th. It’s not just about a night of elegance; it’s about uniting our community around a shared mission – to uplift and empower the youth. The Gala is such a vital part of the philanthropic landscape in Scottsdale, and it directly impacts the lives of children in our community. We’re coming together to inspire, and we’ve set some ambitious goals this year. We are particularly excited because we’re building on last year’s success, when we raised $1.1 million for BGCS.

Both of you have impressive backgrounds in the community. How does that influence your approach to chairing this event?

Andrea: For me, this is personal. As a member of the BGCS Board of Governors and founder of Lexie’s Voice Foundation, advocating for youth – especially those with special needs. I’m chairing the Gala for a third year because every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and that’s what this Gala is about. It’s about providing the resources to make that happen.

Beth: My experience in public relations and community engagement over the last 30 years has shown me the power of collaboration. It’s incredibly rewarding to bring people together for such an important cause. I’ve been honored to support various organizations, but co-chairing the Celebrate Youth Gala holds a special place in my heart because it’s about investing in the young people who will become tomorrow’s leaders.

How did you two ladies meet?

Beth: Andi and I met at a kickoff for the Arizona Costume Institute’s Holiday Luncheon. I saw her across the room and knew immediately that I wanted to know her. It happened that our husbands had been at lunch together that very same day and became friends. I think it was meant to be!

Andrea: I felt the same way – it absolutely was meant to be! Meeting Beth that day felt like reconnecting with an old friend. The synchronicity of our husbands meeting the same day made it more special.

The addition of Mary Ellen McKee as Honorary Chair is a notable one. What does her role at this level mean for the Gala?

Andrea & Beth: Mary Ellen McKee is a true champion of youth and an influential philanthropist in our community. Her dedication to service and her legacy of leadership are unmatched. Mary Ellen will inspire others to give generously. She embodies everything we aim to achieve –building a brighter future for every young person in our community.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale have made a significant impact on youth in the area. How will the funds raised at the Gala support that mission?

Andrea & Beth: Funds raised at the Gala ensure that youth across BGCS’s nine Clubs will have access to mentors and programs that change lives. We’re talking about everything from STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) to leadership development and healthy lifestyle initiatives. The Clubs provide essential services, especially during critical hours after school. They help kids achieve academic success, develop good character, and lead healthy lives. What’s more, they are preparing young people for future careers in fields like technology and innovation.

What can attendees expect from this year’s event at The Phoenician?

Andrea & Beth: Expect an evening of elegance, inspiration, and community spirit. We’ll have a beautiful setting, of course, but also a powerful program. From the live auction to heartwarming stories from the kids themselves, it’s going to be a night that showcases the difference we can make together.

Why is community involvement and support for Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale so critical right now?

Andrea & Beth: The world is changing and it’s crucial that we provide young people with the tools they need to thrive, both in school and in life. BGCS is that safe place where they can learn, grow, and feel supported. The impact of the Clubs extends beyond just the youth – it benefits entire families and, ultimately, our community. Every person who attends, donates, or lends their voice to the cause is playing a role in building a brighter tomorrow for these kids. We’re proud to honor Tiffany & Bosco, PA as this year’s Corporate Honoree. A staunch supporter of the Celebrate Youth Gala for over a decade, Tiffany & Bosco has played a pivotal role in the success of the BGCS mission. Their unwavering dedication exemplifies the power of corporate leadership in shaping lives and strengthening the community.

What inspired this year’s theme, “Lighting the Path to Great Futures”?

Andrea: For me, it’s the opportunity to celebrate and support the incredible achievements of the youth we serve. The highlight of the evening is hearing the stories and witnessing the confidence of the Youth of the Year candidates as they share their journeys. The growth they show in public speaking and interviewing abilities is a testament to the hard work they put into the program.

Beth: I couldn’t agree more. The Gala is about inspiring everyone in the room to see the potential in every child and growing community support for their unique journeys. It’s exciting to connect our guests even more deeply with the BGCS mission.

Sculpted Jawline With the New Juvederm Volux!

Benefits of Juvéderm Volux XC:

• Enhanced jawline definition

• Improved facial symmetry

• Restored volume and structure in the lower face

• Smooth and natural-looking results

• Long-lasting effects

• Non-surgical treatment option

• Minimal downtime or recovery period

Sculpt & Enhance Your Jawline

Juvéderm Volux XC is an advanced injectable gel designed to address moderate to severe loss of jawline definition. As we age, the lower face may lose volume and firmness, leading to a less defined jawline. With Juvéderm Volux XC, skilled practitioners can precisely sculpt and enhance your jawline, adding volume and improving its shape and structure. The result? A smooth, chiseled, naturallooking jawline that lasts up to 12 months.

How does Juvéderm Volux XC work?

Juvéderm Volux XC works by using hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the body. The gel formulation is injected into the target areas of the jawline, where it replenishes lost volume and adds definition. HA attracts and retains water molecules, providing hydration and adding fullness to the treated area. Juvéderm Volux XC restores structure and definition to the jawline, resulting in a more sculpted and youthful appearance.

A Conversation with Matt Nelson, Arizona Dentist

Dr. Nelson is one of few dentists in the valley to be named in Phoenix Magazine’s Top Dentist List for 10+ years. We sat down to do an interview with him. He’s a resident of Paradise Valley where he lives with his wife of 25 years, 3 kids, and his dog Lucky.

How did you choose your career?

I am the 5th person in my immediate family to choose dentistry as a profession. I resisted this at first but came to realize that dentistry allowed me to do what I am passionate about: create an experience in a field that otherwise many people associate with a bad experience.

What makes your practice different?

Unfortunately, dentistry is going where the medical profession has already gone. This means it’s getting harder and harder to see the same doctor and get quality care. This is very important to me. I still am the only dentist at my practice and see all my patients. I have resisted offers to sell to a bigger corporation so we can maintain our same level of care.

What is your favorite part of the dental field?

I love taking care of patients who have been avoiding the dentist due to some sort of bad experience in the past. Many times, people will avoid the dentist until they are forced to come in due to a toothache. I love changing their perceptions of a dental visit and winning them over. A keyway we do this is by offering dental sedation.

What is Dental Sedation?

Dental Sedation is when we give you a tablet to take before you come into your appointment that day. This tablet takes away anxiety, makes you sleep, and many times forget the details of the appointment once it is over. We can do years of treatment in one appointment with this technique because it allows us to get so much done in one day.

You are originally from Seattle but moved to the valley 17 years ago. Why did you pick it here?

I love the valley and there is absolutely no place where I would rather live and raise a family. The sun is what originally brought us here, but the valley offers so much more. For a city this size, I think everything is so easy and convenient here. You have all the restaurants of Scottsdale, the sports teams, a world class university, resorts, the airport, and the diversity of Phoenix, hiking on Camelback all withing 15-20 mins of Paradise Valley. We really get spoiled living here!

What are your favorite things to do in the area?

You can find me hiking Camelback Mtn most weekends. I never get over the unique natural beauty of that hike. My wife and I will have a date night each weekend as well and love to try new restaurants as well as frequent our favorites.

NIGHT OF HOPE GALA 2024

On October 18th, Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels hosted its unforgettable 12th annual Night of Hope Gala at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, bringing together 445 guests for a truly inspiring evening. The event raised over $700,000, which will directly support families facing childhood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Thanks to this generous outpouring of support, the organization is able to continue providing vital resources such as Comfycozy’s for Chemo adaptive apparel, Comfort and Care counseling, financial assistance, and Major Distractions events.

The gala featured an evening of live entertainment, a gourmet dinner, and an incredible auction. EmCee Vanessa Ramirez, Auctioneer Kelee Lee Walton, and Gala Co-Chairs Kiesha McFadden and Dr. Korrine Grieger played key roles in ensuring the evening’s success. Their leadership, along with the generous support of sponsors such as BD, Lincoln Heritage, Stevens-Leinwever, BHHS Legacy, Arcturus Ventures, and many others, helped make the event possible.

LOST OUR HOME PET RESCUE BRUNCH

Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas were passed like flowing water to an animal loving crowd the other morning at Montilucia Resort. A steadfast group gathered to fund and support Lost Our Home Pet Rescue. Now in its 15th year of animal rescue and placement, the beloved organization just continues to fluish. This fine brunch gave our furry friends the option of a second chance. With a strong focus on rescue, abandoned, neglected, spay and neuter services for abused animals,

the morning served to educate. A posh breakfast followed by morning show talent John Holmberg and auctioneer Letitia Frye sent the room into a frenzy! A vast list of donors and underwriters too numerous to mention pulled off one of the best fall events imaginable. An incredibly special thank you to Lost our Home board member and major supporter Bruce Andersen, who served as our gracious host. What an amazing morning!

Updating Your Home’s Exterior to Maximize Aesthetic Appeal

There are many elements under the category of “Interior Architecture” including spacial planning and interior room layouts; the pure design aspects of interior details and finish materials; plumbing/electrical plans and selections; cabinetry/millwork; furnishings’ plans with selections of furniture styles and fabrics, and many times the “Exterior” elements. In Arizona as we enjoy such lovely weather (most of the year!) it’s important to integrate the interior and exterior.

I was recently asked to develop a package of finish materials for a Spanish Colonial home that needed updating. The gold toned faux finish color of the house and the cranberry red color on the doors and window frames all looked about 15 years old. Since then, we have gone lighter with our exterior colors and gotten away from the reds. With all the terracotta and saltillo detailing on the house along with stained beams and corbels, we wanted to compliment that palette and also give it a distinctive look. Not just another white house with black trim!

After putting on 3 sample colors of each color, we chose a beautiful soft white color (Dunn Edwards DEW324 Phoenix Villa) for the body of the house and a beautiful sage green (Dunn Edwards DE6222 Weather Board) for all the metal gates and window/door frames. What a transformation it was. See the Before & After for yourself.

THE BOARD OF VISITORS 71ST ANNUAL FASHION SHOW LUNCHEON

If you ever need to look to an organization of ladies that know how to get the job done, than consult The Board of Visitors. The oldest and most important charity in the state did it again just the other afternoon at the Camelback Inn. Chairs Betsy Hanel and Karen Kotalik blew out all the stops. Audio Visual credits for the afternoon went to Sally Guenther and Cindy Good. They took it up a notch and hired famed DJ Kim E. Fresh who spun sounds for not only the show, but also the rest of the luncheon. Emcee Suzanne Bissette lent her on air talents

to introduce all 37 Flower Girls to the runway and the children and grandfather that proceed the young ladies. Various local boutiques lent beautiful clothing. Margaret Merritt and Christine Eastman styled a simply beautiful runway show. White House Design Studio made brilliant table arrangements. The food was fantastic and great holiday cheer prevailed. 22 lucky charities benefited from the proceeds of the afternoon. Kari Denk took home top honors as best dressed at the luncheon. 58TH ANNUAL DESERT BALL

The Desert Foundation Auxiliary celebrated the 58th Desert Ball on December 21, 2024 at The Phoenician Resort. Founded to honor young ladies from the Scottsdale School District, the city of Scottsdale, and the towns of Paradise Valley and Carefree, the Desert Foundation Auxiliary hosts an annual Debutante Ball each year. This year, 14 accomplished young ladies were presented. The tradition of hosting the Desert Ball every December welcomes home our Debutantes from their first year of college with a spectacular evening filled with family and friends.

This evening is truly one of the most opulent charity balls of the season. It never gets too big. But rather maintains tradition, of class

and understated elegance, rather than monetary gain. Guest have the opportunity to mingle as a harpist plays softly in the background. The hors d’ oeuvres tableside service legendary during the debutant presentation were smashing. The rest of the menu perfect. The White House transformed the Phoenician’s ballroom into a stunning evening of winter splendor. Proceeds from this magnificent night served to benefit Rosie’s House.

DFA President Nancy Bates, along with 2024 ball chairs Leslie Lerh and Nicole Cundiff should be extremely pleased at the tremendous outcome of a simply perfect evening!

Q&A with Catherine and Christina

The Honor Ball – a legacy of philanthropy and impact

For 48 years, The Honor Ball has served as a celebration of the power of philanthropy to impact the health and wellbeing of our community. HonorHealth Foundation is profoundly grateful for the leadership of founder Virginia G. Piper, who planted seeds of generosity and creativity that have grown and blossomed through another generation of philanthropists.

The Honor Ball 2025 is chaired by Catherine Tuton and Dr. Christina Reuss, who answered our questions about this year’s ball.

What does The Honor Ball mean to the philanthropic community?

The Honor Ball has made advances in care at HonorHealth for 48 years! While we always have a wonderful time, the real joy is knowing that our collective generosity will serve our entire community by continuing to improve healthcare and patient services.

What drives your desire to serve as co-chairs for this event?

I (Catherine) had a cardiac event that ended up being a very rare heart condition that primarily affects women who are young and healthy. Without the compassionate, life-changing care I received from Dr. Reuss and HonorHealth, I am sure my outcome

Ball

would have been very different. We see our women friends taking care of everyone around them but often ignoring or neglecting their own needs. We want women to know that their own health is important, too.

What should we expect at The Honor Ball this year?

The Honor Ball is unique, in that there is NO fundraising at the event. No silent or live auction and no paddle raise. This is a celebration with a hosted reception, dinner and dancing! Once again, we’ll feature the Beverly Hills West Coast Orchestra, which our guests absolutely love.

How did you select the theme?

One of the privileges of the chairs is to select a theme that drives décor and music. We both loved the disco era and the Studio 54 vibe. Our invitations feature an iconic disco ball and you’re going to see a lot of sparkle at The Honor Ball!

Tell us about this year’s honorees.

We are so happy that HonorHealth Foundation selected Budd and Laurie Florkiewicz as the 2025 Honor Ball Honorees. Their legacy of service and generosity to HonorHealth is truly remarkable! It will be a wonderful moment when they receive their medallions and the thanks of all our guests.

What programs benefit from the proceeds of the ball?

Given our mutual interests, we worked with HonorHealth Foundation to create a focus on women’s health. The Honor Ball

proceeds will help advance women’s heart care, breast and gynecological cancers, labor and delivery services and address the behavioral health needs that are unique to women, including postpartum depression. We are so fortunate to have the collaboration of HonorHealth to reach so many women and help them achieve their best health.

honorHealth Honor Ball Committee

Honoring Budd and Laurie Florkiewicz

Budd and Laurie Florkiewicz have served HonorHealth and the Foundation for nearly 20 years, serving on many committees and giving generously to a wide scope of HonorHealth programs. Their generosity is felt throughout the organization.

With quiet graciousness the belies her strength of purpose, Laurie served as chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and continues to serve as a member of the executive committee. She is also a long-time Honor Ball volunteer.

Together, Budd and Laurie have opened their home to Foundation evens and have generously supported the expansion of the HonorHealth Heart Care Center, Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center, the NICU, Desert Mission, the Pro-Am and many other events and programs.

In recognition of their generosity and loyalty, HonorHealth Foundation is immensely pleased to recognize Budd and Laurie as the 2025 Honor Ball Honorees.

A Few Minutes with Rebecca and Cary Fowler

What do you love about Arizona and where you live?

I have lived in a few states within the US since moving from Hong Kong and Australia in the early 80’s. The first state being Honolulu, HI where I attended Punahou School. The different states following have played an important part in who I am today but Scottsdale, Arizona has become my final home. Arizona offers everything I could ask for and more. The quality of life, community, restaurants, shopping and most importantly is finding the love of my life my husband Cary. The only thing missing is the ocean but if Arizona was on the ocean everyone would move here. The amazing weather yearround is also a plus as well. You can’t beat the perfect temperatures 9 months out of the year when you’re a car enthusiast and have 16 and counting cars to drive.

How long have you been here and where did you come from?

I have lived in Scottsdale, Arizona now for 10 1/2 years now tied with Hong Kong. I moved here from Round Hill, Virginia and hour outside of Washington D.C. Where I raised my two sons, Cole and Scott, for 14 years before making the move to Scottsdale, Arizona. Cary was raised in Seattle and has lived in Scottsdale for the last 28 years.

What are your favorite charities to support?

I support all different types of charities. My family, being animal lovers, have always been involved. I am currently on the board of Rescue Paws located in Hua Hin, Thailand. A nonprofit animal welfare organization aims to improve the lives of animals through Sterilization, adoption and education. Another charity is Wings for Life, founded by Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz and twotime motocross world champion Heinz Kinigadner. We learned of this breakthrough charity from our continual fan relationship with Red Bull Formula One. Paraplegia is not one of the so-called widespread diseases, so investments in this research often did not seem worthwhile enough. This realization signaled a clear need to establish Wings for Life, with the important goal of finding cures for all paraplegic patients worldwide. Another dear to our hearts is Tunnel to Tower as we love and support our fallen troops and responders and their families.

Name a few things that people should know about you. I am a dog lover and we have 6 dogs. I have 3 passports Australian, British and US. Cary and I travel the world attending 5-6 F1 races a year. Cary is a serial entrepreneur owning many different companies including RV Dealerships, Mortgage and Real Estate Companies and now is partners with Rebecca in RAC Financial which is a merchant services provider for thousands of companies across the United States and expanding globally.

Rebecca, what’s your favorite color and why?

I think everyone knows my favorite color is purple! Simply makes me happy! When I am feeling down I just have to go in the garage and look at my 2 purple Rolls Royce’s. Tell us about the ring that Jill created for you. What was the inspiration? I showed a picture of a stunning cluster of flowers made of different gems in a two-finger ring to Jill over a year ago after a trip with Dior to Lake Como, Italy. If you know Jill she automatically jumped on it and said I can make something even more spectacular. Of course, she went up and beyond my imagination from a cluster of flowers to adding my 2 25 carat canary yellow diamond rings surrounded by gem made flowers. This beautiful creation allows me to still wear my yellow diamond rings separately or add this cluster of flowers to make it a masterpiece of its own.

Tell us a bit about your car collection and passion for collecting cars.

My love for cars goes back to my childhood. My father, an enthusiast and past race car driver, I was always going with him to the dealerships, car shows and the track. We were never short of cars from Rolls Royce’s to Ferrari’s to collectible mustangs to name a few. When I got my driver’s license my father made me take all 4 wheels off my car and put them back on before he would let me drive.

Since Cary and I founded RAC Financial 5 years ago we have been fortunate enough to start purchasing our dream cars which include my Rolls Royce Spectre, Cullinan, and soon to be here Phantom Scintilla (1 of 10 made) because I’m a Rolls Royce girl at heart. Cary’s favorites in our collection include a Ferrari 488 Pista, 750 McLaren Spider and soon to be here Lamborghini Revuelto. We also have a V12 Aston Martin Vantage, Lamborghini Huracan Technica, Lamborghini Urus Performonte, Mercedes GTR, 1957 Pink Cadillac built by Boyd Coddington, 1958 Packard (Rita Hayworth Tribute Car) built by John D’Agostino, 1968 Factory Five Shelby Cobra, 1969 Chevy Camero Restomod, 1956 Thunderbird Convertible, and Rebecca’s birthday present from a few years ago a Dodge RAM Henessey Mammoth 1000 which she chose over a Ferrari at the time.

What are you excited about for 2025?

I am looking forward to being a grandma! Of course we are looking forward to the upcoming Formula One season as we will be attending 5-6 races around the world. Also the delivery of our new cars on order plus we always seem to find some exciting new car we must have, we just can’t help ourselves.

A Room With A View

I was never much of a person for brunch. Reconstituted eggs and lukewarm food. Plates of hopelessly average sweets and an omelet bar to liven things up. Not to mention the endlessly fingerprinted utensils that everyone including the kids had touched but that’s another issue for me entirely. Just add a mimosa and BOOM justified overpriced food. No, this was different, eclectic and elegant. Aromas wafted through the entirety of the building as dedicated professional servers attended to guests with a variety of decadent appetizers, main courses, and crisp cocktails or an extensive list of wine and champagnes. Welcome to Geordies at the Wrigley Mansion.

Seemingly stepping back in time to the grandeur of the 1930’s, renowned Chef Nick Kennedy brings sumptuous seasonal cuisine in the opulent setting of the Mansion. With

its 360 degree views of the valley, crisp linens and a gracious staff fulfill every need. Limited to Sundays only, brunch is as sophisticated as the Mansion itself. Perfectly manicured grounds and endless displays of vintage art adorn every wall. Perhaps the greatest work of art is the stunning Steinway Grand Piano with its own dedicated room. One of only two in the world, the other is in the Smithsonian Museum. Truly priceless. All of the bedrooms have been turned into private dining areas that can accomodate multiple group sizes as well as large dining halls for large numbers of tables.

We were sat at a table with a stunning view of the city. A bowl of fresh fruit and a basket of fresh pastries were delivered to our table. We perused the menu for the entrees and were at a loss as the choices were vast and equally decadent. We settled on the King Crab Benedict and the Herb Crusted Prime Rib. Prior to the entrees coming out we were encouraged to visit the Belgian waffle bar. Fresh fluffy waffles were individually prepared with a melange of toppings to satisfy every whim. Tables of fresh cookies, tarts, cheesecakes and creme brulees finished out the deep oak bar area. The benedict arrived on a Noble English muffin. Mounds of deep red king crab were snuggled beneath silky hollandaise and a delicate frisee. The perfectly medium rare prime rib was nestled atop a rich bordelaise and crowned with a sunny side up egg. A tray of shareables including maple glazed bacon, local Schreiners sausage, crispy fingerling potatoes and a baby gem salad dressed in a citrus vinaigrette.

After brunch we were encouraged to take our champagne and explore the grounds and the seemingly endless private dining areas which we happily obliged. We were at The Mansion for the better part of three hours. Each taste was so unique and left us thirsting for the next. Geordies is a destination and literal walk back in time. The grandeur is unlike any place in the valley and the rich history tells the story of the two families that have owned it and the place in Phoenix history that is as whimsical as the menu. Whether for a special occasion or an intimate date, Geordies will ultimately satisfy. However, bring your appetite, I was ill prepared for the vast amount of food that was included. And maybe wear your stretchy pants.

Impression Sunrise

Shortly before her untimely death, famed Valley socialite and best-selling author Nancy Joaquin, published what would be her last book. The very glamourous and ever-lovely Mrs. Joaquim had already met with remarkable success with three other books, all with tremendous and fascinating tales.

Impression Sunrise dives deep into the complex relationship between famed French painter Claude Monet and his second wife Alice. This sweeping narrative takes its title from the 1874 group art show in Paris. Along with Claude Monet, the show included Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas. The group would introduce the world to French impressionism, a sketch-like style that flouted academic painting.

This historical novel is rich with the turn of each page. The story is intertwined between Mr. Monet, his first wife and then his second. It is during this time the French impressionism skyrockets to global fame and become a household name. This makes a far richer plotline. The story becomes intense and thick with emotion. Nancy Joaquim may be gone, but she leaves our world with another appetizing tale of finery. Her star burned out far too soon, yet she was able to teach and entertain us with so much history.
