Blaze new trails and create celebration together with your dreams, visions and friends. Flamboyant! Original! Outrageous! Excessive! Surprising! After attending a luncheon at my house, one my guests sent me a thank you

ENTERTAINING IDEAS: 1. Be the most extravagant, wonderful expression of yourself. Give this a lot of thought and go for it. 2. Don’t minimize, MAXIMIZE!

note. She thanked me for my “EXTRAVAGANT WONDERFULNESS.” Two words that totally got my attention. Think about them? What does “extravagant,” wonderfulness” mean to you? Personally, these words represent excitement, vibrant energy, stepping outside of my comfort zone, going-all-out! I was inspired to invite two couples to an “EXTRAVAGANT, WONDERFULNESS” dinner party. Knowing that I had to create something that I had never done before (breaking the glass ceiling) I came up with the idea of seating my guests in the middle of the table and placing flowers (lots and lots of them) at BOTH ends of the table. I had never done that before. Every time that I added more flowers, the more extravagant and wonderful the table looked. A sparkling royal blue piece of fabric, used as a tablecloth, added reflection and luminosity. The place cards were more elaborately decorated with hearts and rhinestones and love messages. The more objects and flowers that I added to

to yourself. Meditation is a life long practice, the experience of which will grow, mature, and change with you. Always remember to judge the quality of your meditation NOT by the direct experience of it, but by the overall quality of your life. As with all yoga techniques, it is important to learn from a qualified teacher who can tailor the practices to your needs at any given time, and to help you evolve your techniques as you grow in your practice. The time has come to “summer- ize” our homes. There are so many ways to do this and we all have our own ideas of what summer means to us. It’s a time when our personality can decide how we would like to change our spaces to enjoy what summer brings. Expressing our individual summer needs means making those changes that will give us a feeling of comfort during the long, hot days. Some suggestions of the following 21 items may not appeal to you, while others may be just what you have been waiting and wanting to do. • Change heavy draperies with lighter ones that can be made out of a shade of white or pastel colors in a light weight fabric such as gauge or linen. • Place summer flowers throughout your home. You can buy one bunch and separate the flowers, placing them in several different shaped small vases. Even one flower in a vase makes a lovely statement. • Slipcover one or more pieces of furniture such as a sofa or chairs in a neutral color. Then add colored pillow to coordinate with your room. Or you can introduce a bold color in your slipcover as a summer accent. • Replace your table linen with colors and mix and match them, or find wicker and rattan placemats. If using paper or cloth napkins, buy them in colors. • Find sheets in cool pastels to sleep on during the summer heat. • Add summer accents to your bookshelves with items such as painted and natural rocks and seashells. • Add a piece of furniture painted in a summer color. You may already have one you would like better if it were another color. • Replace heavy fabrics, such as runners on tables, with lighter fabrics or remove them all together. • Buy potted plants that look like grass and line them up on your mantel. • Temporarily pack away some of your accessories like picture frames and knick-knacks to give a lighter, more open look and feel. • Switch out a heavy rug with a lighter sisal rug. It’s easy to roll up your winter one and store it in the garage. • Change your drape tablecloth with a lighter weight and color cloth. Or drape a side table that has had no cloth. • Change your lampshades from dark to light, and bring in bright colors. • Change your furniture arrangement and if possible, face the seating arrangement towards the outdoors.

• Select your summer reading, and place some of the books on a cocktail table and the others by your bedside. • Replace your winter afghans with lighter color or crocheted ones. • Replace your waste baskets with wicker ones, or place baskets throughout your house—some filled with fruit in the kitchen, or hand towels in the powder room. • Replace the logs in your fireplace with candle holders and candles or paint the inside of your fireplace white or a color for the summer months. • Fill a large clear vase with lemons or other fruit as an accent. • Change your room fragrance to something light, such as jasmine. • Enjoy the outdoors, whether it’s on your patio or by the pool. Serve breakfast, lunch or dinner outside, and don’t forget the candlelight in the evening. Summer is that time to relax and kick back. Life becomes more casual and loose; let your home reflect that. Since it is a more casual time, take advantage of the support your home can give you to accomplish being comfortable and relaxed. Create your home to bring cool smiles. Sartorial etiquette has changed. These days, billionaires are sporting jeans and mock turtlenecks, as everyone from celebrities to average Joes eschew traditional styles and as formal events become increasingly informal. To avoid disrespecting your host while also expressing your personal style, follow these simple guidelines.

Do: Dress for the occasion. Inquire about dress code or typical attire. Safety may prevail over fashion and require specialized attire for restricted access areas where risk of injury may occur, i.e. racing or sports-related events.

Avoid: The over and under. Wearing a tuxedo to a pool party or short pants to an after 5 p.m. cocktail party disrespects the occasion and displays your ignorance. Observe local/societal customs instead.

Stay chill. Consider temperature fluctuations and bring a sweater or jacket for temperature drops.

Lose the desire to “over bling.” Find a focal point such as a great pendant or watch, then build your look from there. Too much trendsetting. The latest fad may not work no matter your love for it. Consider your body type, age and event appropriateness.

Hot under the collar. Shirts with buttons can be loosened two buttons down or 4 inches from the collarbone for a cooler and more casual look. When a jacket is required. Always keep the middle button closed (even in summer), upper button if you desire, and never the lower. Also, no jacket means no tie, too.

The team at Calviri, an ASU spinout company on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, is focused on a bigger question. Can we eradicate cancer like we have done with small pox and polio?

As they work to eradicate cancer Calviri will develop new diagnostic and therapeutic products, and then preventative vaccines that will stop cancer from starting. Ball Gown Maverick What was your first job in the fashion industry? I worked one day for Macy’s private label. The supervisor fired me that afternoon. No one else would ever hire me. Was there a designer who inspired you? When I first started out I was most inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier, but since then the designer I most admired was McQueen. Tell us a little bit about your first company? I went from Yale to Salomon Bros where I worked on the trading desk for 3 months, but in that time all I could think about was what I was sewing that night after work. Being 21, cocky, and very naïve, I thought I could quit, get a job designing in the fashion industry, and be the next Calvin Klein in a few years. In the next few years never having been able to land a job in the industry, I was going from one odd job to another – sales person, waiter, bar tender, carpenter, mason – while working on my own collection. I sewed the first samples myself and took them in a suitcase from store to store in NYC. The first few collections didn’t do much, but eventually Barney’s took a chance on me. It has been a long journey, but my greatest blessing was that I never had doubts that this is what I wanted to do. Many have said you can predict fashion trends. Is this true? I don’t know that I can predict trends, but I do believe if you listen to women talk about the challenges they face in life and in dressing; you can sense currents in how clothing needs to adapt to their ever changing lives. Where do you see your new line in the next several years? I see my business developing so that I have more time to do the thing that lead me on this path in the first place – create a new vocabulary in clothing design. Where would you like to live? Wherever my wife and children are. If you could invite 7 people living or dead to your dinner party, who would they be? McQueen, Chanel, Vionnet, Richard Serra, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, and Antoni Gaudi What do you consider your finest hour? Keeping my crew of sewers and cutters together on payroll during the entire pandemic.

The Barbizon By Paulina Bren If you grew up in white, middle class America, from the late 1920’s to the early 1980’s, and were female, you’ve probably heard of the Barbizon Hotel. Erected as a women’s only property, the hotel provided a haven for young ladies. The property rest assured jittery parents who allowed their ambitious daughters to venture to Manhattan, that they would be taken care of. After all, men were forbidden to go above the prestigious hotel’s mezzanine. Vassar historian Paulina Bren has done her research, indeed. She is quick early on to mention the before fame young ladies who set up shop in the hotel. Occupants included: Grace Kelly, Sylvia Plath, Joan Didion, Ali McGraw, Phylicia Rashad, Gael Greene, Candice Bergen, Mona Simpson and on and on. The book’s second title, “The Hotel That Set Women Free”, focuses strongly on the Madison Avenue male-assigned roles women were up against, especially after World War II. Maid service and meals were provided on the premises, allowing young ladies to focus on their talents. Guest editorships, beauty queens, actresses and writers all congregated there. Many would later write about their experiences in the famed New York property. A great read for anyone interested in the ever-evolving twentieth century. The book is rich with tales from each generation-defining decade as well as the American dream.
