La Dolce Vita The Season October to May Stop me if you’ve already heard this! A few weeks ago, famed socialite and community leader Priscilla Nicholas blew out a few candles on a birthday cake in Encanto Park. But that’s just the start of one of the most sophisticated and crowd-controlled birthday parties yours truly has attended in my 24 year tenure with this publication. Brenda and Jim Howard hosted cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres in the home that was built by the Diamond’s department store founders, but you probably already knew that. Anyway, Priscilla stood as only she could do, magnificent in a black sheath with a jeweled collar and greeted all who entered. Her two lovey daughters Tanya Rietz and Michelle Blincoe and their handsome father Michael made sure the evening was amazing ... Everywhere you looked you saw: Nancy Hanley, Sue Fletcher, Nancy Teets, Ina and Murray Manaster, Bill Pope, Betty McRae, Matthew Boland and Chris Greulich, Laurie and Bud Florkiewicz, Sandy and Frank Trznadel, Ruth and Bob Lavinia, Sharron Lewis, Nanci Bruner and on and on and on. Ellen Dolgen slipped in from Coronado to attend the festivities and she eclipsed even the sun and the moon. She looked magnificent, stole the show and probably didn’t even know it? Jim Howard and Tara Farnsworth shared bartending duties and I must say I was shocked to find Brenda in the kitchen preparing all the mouth-watering hors

d’ oeuvres! Talk about a hands-on cocktail party? It was great to be back in that home, since it’s truly among the most beautiful in the city. I hope you get to drop by some time? Next the party progressed to the also magnificent home of Libby and Joel Cohen just a few blocks away. Earlier, I remarked to lovely Libby that the beautiful dress she was wearing was almost an exact match to the Howard’s Scalamandre paper mural in their dining room. Don’t you just love it! I don’t think she did. American Valet led merrymakers by trolley thru the serpentine streets of the famous residential section to the Cohen’s spectacular digs. Then they went back to the Howard’s and retrieved all the expensive cars depositing them at the Cohen’s several blocks away. Would you trust any other valet company to do this for you? No you wouldn’t! Event planner to the stars George Abrams, who was coincidentally one of the hosts, transformed the Cohen home into one of the most breathtaking settings I’ve ever seen and that says a lot! Red chivari chairs mixed with ivory table cloths, Tivoli lights streaming thru the trees and a lush green lawn poolside made the evening so special. Quiet Continued on page 10

Vincent Guerithault, the internationally renowned chef of Vincent on Camelback, made sure guests were treated to some of the finest Southwestern French cuisine in the state. During the fantastic dinner, Priscilla simply stood and thanked her guests. There were no alcohol-induced speeches permitted. You get the picture? Then she blew out a certain number of candles and the rest of the night flowed like an expensive magnum of Dom. You should have been there! Ball chair Char Hubble must have awakened happy the day after the 58th annual Heart Ball, the most anticipated event of the season. Champagne and spirits abounded during an opulent cocktail reception that included everyone who matters and others too numerous to mention. I snuck into the ballroom only to be scolded by Char who said “you’re not supposed to be in here.” Sorry honey I’ve managed to sneak into every one of them for the last 24 years and yours is no exception. But then again it was. This year’s ballroom resembled a 1940s New York supper club in shades of black, gold and ivory. It was one of the most beautiful I’ve seen yet and Char matched the décor perfectly in an ivory number with stands of gold that cascaded to the floor ... I returned to the cocktail reception and mixed and mingled with the blue-ribbon crowd assembled in the foyer. I was shocked yet again by the Phoenician, a hotel that has the reputation of slamming closed reception bars once ballroom doors open, did just that.

I walked the bar area as chimes rang out only to find bartenders refusing a cocktail to guests that have paid an extraordinary amount of money to attend the ball. By this time just a hand full of people remained in the foyer. They informed ball goers that there were bars inside the ballroom. Nice try, we all know it takes at least 45 minutes for those to open. Whatever happened to civility? The Phoenician needs to remember that the people in this fine community built that resort, not the conventions they now favor. Where is Charles Stuart when we need him most? That said, it was a magnificent and stunning night. I left as soon as the ballroom started to fill. Remember, the best time to leave a party is just as it’s getting started. In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That a wolf in sheep’s clothing is now hanging out with the people’s second choice crowd. That the bizarre behavior of an often over-served man caused people to flee not only an event but dinner afterwards, as he continued to stalk them throughout the night. That it’s time for two socialites to kiss and make up, since neither has alternatives left. That ladies need to be very careful of a wanton socialite who is more than happy to dance with your husband and anything else too. That a socialite with an anger management issue was recently very cruel to check out people at a luncheon and the entire social community saw it. Now you’re all caught up until 2018!

My spring 2018 collection was inspired by France. I call it my love letter to Paris. What are the hottest trends you’re seeing this season? Capes are huge! So are statement shoes and handbags. Are pants still viable for women in high fashion? Absolutely! Pant suits are huge again. Nothing says statement like wearing a white pant suit into a dinner party. No matter what time of year. Where are we headed with fashion this season? There’s a huge trend to dress down. That’s why statement shoes and handbags are a large focal point. We also seem to be getting away from chunky jewelry, but just for a season or two. What are the trendiest two items for spring 2018? Capes, huge florals and prints. What do you consider the greatest decade for fashion? Right now. Women are at the highest point of success yet. Women are changing the rules. What’s you next big thing? I have a lot on my plate. Bridal, evening wear, home everything, cosmetics, maybe a fragrance. The future will hold a lot for the brand.

6 Questions for … Doris Kearns Goodwin What inspired you to write your last book? In choosing my subjects, the most important thing I look for is a leader and an era that I want to live with year after year, since it takes me so long to complete my books. For The Bully Pulpit, I returned to my favorite time period in American history – the progressive era – dominated by Theodore Roosevelt, a president whose colorful personality, physical vigor and mental curiosity had long fascinated me. I wanted to explore how TR’s presidency still holds a high ranking among historians; though, unlike most of our great presidents, he faced no major domestic crisis or war. I knew from the start that I needed a fresh angle. I’d like to think I found that by coupling Roosevelt’s life story with that of his good friend and successor, William Howard Taft. Beyond the story of their friendship and eventual rupture, the question that intrigued me was how Roosevelt managed to rouse unwilling congressional leaders to pass reform measures designed to meet the urgent problems of the day. The answer lay in his enterprising use of the “bully pulpit,” a phrase he himself coined to describe the national platform the presidency provides to shape public sentiment and press Congress to act.

Sadly, his legacy was cut in two by the Vietnam War and because of that he opened to me in ways he never would have, had I known him at the height of his power. With 50-year anniversaries of his great civil rights laws ending segregation, providing precious right to vote for African Americans, with Medicare, Medicaid, federal aid to education, PBS, NPR, Head Start, immigration reform and fair housing; his vision and legendary skill in leading Congress is finally receiving its righteous reward.
What was it like to work for Lyndon Johnson? It was an honor and privilege that I certainly understand and appreciate more now than I did 50 years ago when I worked for him first in the White House and then on his ranch in Austin helping him with his memoirs. I had written an article for The New Republic on how to remove LBJ from power, which was published just after I had been selected a White House Fellow. I was sure he would kick me out of the program. Instead, he said bring her down
What writing do you want to be remembered for, if you had to select one book? It would have to be my book on Abraham Lincoln because it tells the story of the greatest leader our country has ever known. Lincoln confronted the worst crisis in our history, saved the Union, won the war and ended slavery forever.

Will society ever “get along” in the political arena in the next few years … or decades? I am hopeful that the political system will improve, as it’s more broken now than I have ever seen it in my lifetime. I do find some solace in knowing that it was worse in the 1850s when division between North and South even brought violence on the Senate floor. But I am an historian; I don’t have a crystal ball! However, I can tell you that times were certainly better when there was cooperation and compromise across the party aisles, when being a legislator was a source of pride. There was a time when Senators and Congressmen and women stayed in Washington on the weekends together and formed friendships over party lines instead of spending so much time raising money, making them more dependent on special interest groups more than on coming together to produce legislation and appealing to voters in ways that matter to them.
What do you consider the greatest decade for politics? I would have to say I think the 1960s, as tumultuous and arduous as it was, was probably one of the greatest decades for politics. It’s the one I personally experienced and as an historian have been able to reflect upon many of the 50-year anniversaries that mark the significant events of the 1960s that still resonate today. Which seven people (living or dead) would you like to invite to a dinner party? Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Lyndon Johnson, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson, Rachel Carson, Tim Russert

A Few Minutes with ... Berridge Nurseries In 1938 Jim Berridge set up shop on Central Avenue. Later, his fast-growing nursery moved to 16th Street and Camelback road before finally settling in the golden setting of Arcadia again on Camelback Road and 46th Street. For 80 years, the opulent and famous nursery and tropical greenhouses have made the homes and yards of so many so beautiful. We had the chance to catch up with Jim Berridge’s great granddaughters Christine and Melinda, who both oversee the impressive plant dynasty. How did you both get involved in the family business? Christine came to work at the nursery when she was in high school and never left. Melinda joined the team 16 years ago. Berridge Nursey has an excellent and famous reputation for its garden sculpture, fountains and pottery. Where is all of this obtained? The pottery is all purchased on buying trips to Southern California. All our pottery is custom made to our specifications. The other garden accessories are shipped in from a stone manufacturer in Pennsylvania.

What’s the nursery’s greatest selling point? We are the only nursery that sells bare-root roses and we are considered one of the foremost experts on growing roses in Arizona. We also have a formally trained rosarian on site to answer all your questions related to the planting, growth and long-term care of roses. Where do you both see the nursery in 10 years? Bigger is not always the best option. We have an excellent parcel of land in the heart of Arcadia. Many of our employees have worked here for more than 40 years.We consider them all to be our family. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service, solutions and creativity. We are here to enrich people’s yards and homes. We are very content with the nursery in its current state. Is it true that people can hold functions at the nursery? Yes, but they are on a case-by-case basis. We hold various garden club luncheons and lectures throughout the season. You have to remember that it gets very dark here by sunset. We are not equipped to hold cocktail parties or weddings, but we can offer a variety of plant-related events during daylight hours... Do Millennials like nurseries? Millennials tend to see nurseries with purpose. They like to plant, grow and eat what they select; so the nursery is key to their concepts of clean eating. People think of Desert Botanical Gardens when they think of beautiful flower, cactus and succulent pots and planters. Do you offer something like this too? Yes, our custom planters are huge! We have a second-generation specialist who has a tremendously gifted eye. We can custom create pots, small planters and hanging baskets for the most discriminating tastes.

How often should I dry clean my suit? The dry cleaning process can be very harsh and most people dry clean too often. A good rule to follow, if you wear the suit often, is to dry clean only when your attempt to spot clean a stain or airing out smoke or other odors is no longer effective. If you rarely wear the suit, this could mean as little as once a year. Always dry clean the jacket and pants together to ensure they maintain color consistency. What suit color is best with brown shoes? The best color with brown shoes is navy. Steer clear of charcoal gray as it is a mature color and brown shoes are less formal, the two don’t mix. What’s the one thing I should add to my wardrobe this fall? This fall add a lightweight multi-colored blazer that can be worn with dark jeans or trousers. Think fall colors. It’s a great piece that will add range and great color to your fall wardrobe.

What is the most important thing to consider when purchasing a suit? When buying a suit, fit is most important. Some men have a tendency to buy based on brand, but if the suit doesn’t fit properly it’s not a good buy. Focus on fit and quality … make sure the sleeves and jacket length are correct and make alterations if not. When standing with your arms down, your sleeves should not cover any part of your hand. The jacket length should reach just under the curve of your buttock.

The Sisters, The Lives and Times of the Fabulous Cushing Sisters by David Grafton Reviewed by Bill Dougherty
Written more than two decades ago, David Grafton’s portrayal of the three Cushing sisters still proves an excellent and easily found read. Americans had a more than forty-year fascination with the three girls; Betsy, Minnie and Babe. Daughters of renowned neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing, the three set trends, married exceedingly wealthy men and captured the country at a time when café society still existed. Vincent Astor would come calling first and wed Minnie. This catapulted her to the highest position in the land; yet she only stayed a short while, preferring instead the company of the openly gay renowned painter, James Fosburgh. The two created a brilliant salon in their New York penthouse and became the toast of the town. Betsey married James Roosevelt. The marriage was strained almost immediately but she did manage to become the unofficial hostess in the White House in Eleanore Roosevelt’s constant absence. She later married Jock Whitney and enjoyed a fairy tale life of untold wealth, devotion and verve. Babe, the most beautiful of the three, married first Stanley Mortimer of Standard Oil and then Bill Paley the CEO of CBS. The two would take on iconic roles in the circle of high society. Unfortunately, her husband preferred to sleep with other women rather than her. The couple’s deep and complicated relationship with Truman Capote would have a disastrous end for all three parties too. Whether you like this book or not, the validity of the three subjects is simply mesmerizing. Happy endings in the book are slim. However, there are countless tales that will make it hard for the reader to put it down. Yes, they were all that famous and yes, this book is that good.

Slim by Annette Tapert Reviewed by Bill Dougherty The subtitle of this biography may be called “Memories of a Rich and Imperfect Life,” but once you start reading the book, it’s hard to believe in imperfection. Enter Slim Keith, born Nancy Gross in Salinas, California, in 1917. Even from a young age, Slim had something no other woman had. Blessed with an amazing bone structure, piercing eyes and towering height; anyone who met her knew she was destined for fame and fortune. By the time Slim was eighteen; her physical beauty, combined with scathing wit, assured her a place in rarefied circles. She modeled, arrived in Hollywood and dated every leading man available. She married famed film director Howard Hawks. Then she discovered Lauren Bacall and turned her into her celluloid clone. Slim hob knobbed with Earnest Hemmingway, Truman Capote and the page of A list celebrities. Later she married dramatic agent Leland Howard and came to be the most engaging fixture on Broadway along with the world of high society and the jet-set. Still later, she married Kenneth Keith and became the titled Lady Slim Keith. Great book, although it drags in portions. Once you make it through the soggy chapters, Slim becomes a memorable, fun and entertaining read. Worth the trip to Amazon, since it was published in 1990.
