Justice Sandra Day O’Connor By Bill Dougherty

Much will be written about the passing of Justice Sandra Day O’ Connor and her vast legacy in the legal, political and judicial arenas. Yet there was so much more to this tremendous lady than her ground-breaking appointment to the Supreme Court in 1981. Sandra Day O’Connor was a true force in Arizona. This was long before her meteoric rise to worldwide fame following her prestigious first female appointment to the Supreme Court. She loved Arizona, its native American culture and the state’s majestic beauty. She was a member of the Phoenix Junior League and then It’s President. Justice O’Connor also served of the board of the Heard Museum and was also the president of the Museum. She was an avid tennis and golf enthusiast. A gourmet cook who from the 1960s and well into her Washington DC days was a consummate entertainer. Socialites, politicians and world leaders would marvel at her grandstyle entertaining, and she made every dish served. After attending Stanford University with former Paradise Valley attorney and mayor Ed Lowry and other notables, she returned to our state. She married and raised a family. She applied to 40 law firms and was rejected by all of them simply because she was a woman. But her tenacity, kindness and drive would open the doors for not only the position of justice but women in our state and the nation.

In the years we have supported it, it has just kept growing. We were invited to sit with these lovelies at The Camelback Inn the day after the Phoenix Heart Ball and it was smashing! Congratulations ladies. It’s better to travel and we agree so in this issue you will learn more about beautiful Italy, exotic Japan and Tubac: the next big thing. Staff writer Bev Rosen ventures back to the 1960s and gives us a glimpse into sailing transatlantic on the original RMS Queen Mary, now a tourist attraction in Long Beach, Calif. We’d like to thank everyone that contributed and (still is) to the annual Evening of Trends Gala 2023. It was a brilliant affair. The evening introduced the community to two new Fabulous Phoenicians and 10 new Trendsetters. The night made a huge profit, but since it’s a bit vulgar to talk about money, we’ll just say that the UofA Cancer Research Centers in Tucson and Phoenix will be quite pleased. By the way, now that winter is in the air and it’s finally cold, drop by Veneto Trattoria in Hilton Village. Their vegetable puree soup is

extraordinary. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed! There’s nothing like it in all the Valley. Merry makers at a recent event were absolutely dismayed by the behavior of a guest you all know. Evidently a server removed a plate only to have the flatware drop down the party guest’s lapels. The man jumped to his feet screaming at the waiter, while table guest watched in horror. Even after the banquet captain apologized profusely, the man continued to berate the waitstaff. He even put his hand in the face of a sever trying to refill his glass of wine. Boy, you must be so proud of your impolite manners and unrefined behavior. All the money in the world and not an ounce of class. How sad!

Decorate for The Holidays and Be the First to Have Next Year’s Big Trends! Being aware of upcoming Trends can be a fun way to instantly update your home’s decor and style. Living room and great room trends may be as simple as a new statement piece of furniture, a new grouping of pillows or a new lamp. Here are some mindfully chosen dynamics for new palettes, new textures, new ideas for what makes a house a home. You can make changes to your décor as you evolve into the holiday season and beyond. CORK FLOORING Cork flooring is back! It is natural, interesting, and a statement solution for organic living, meeting the sustainable and visual needs of conscious consumers. PAINTED WOODWORK The woodwork in your room, which is a finishing detail, can become a design feature with an accent tone which complements the scheme of the room. Pickleball. Just like the finely tuned skills required to dominate the court, observing pickleball etiquette is crucial for a harmonious and enjoyable game.

Start with A Smile: Pickleball is not just about competition but also camaraderie. Begin your game with a friendly smile and a warm greeting to your opponents. It sets a positive tone for the match.

Paddle Poaching: Never use someone else’s paddle, and don’t let your curiosity get the best of you. It’s like trying on someone else’s shoes – uncomfortable and inappropriate.

Wait Your Turn: The court is a shared space. Respect your fellow players by waiting for your turn to play.

Mind Your Noise: While cheering is encouraged, avoid loud or distracting noises during your opponent’s serve or play. Silence is golden, even in the lively world of pickleball.

Cellphone Courtship: Keep your mobile devices tucked away. It’s a court, not a texting zone. Emergencies aside, your game deserves your full attention. Retriever Duty: If the ball bounces onto another court during a rally, be a good sport and fetch it. It’s a token of sportsmanship and good pickleball citizenship. Call the Score Aloud: Clearly announce the score before each serve, ensuring everyone is on the same page. It avoids confusion and maintains the integrity of the game. Play to Win, Fairly: While the competitive spirit is admirable, fairness reigns supreme. Call out faults on yourself, even if your opponent missed it. Your integrity is your best pickleball partner. Offer Help: If you notice a player struggling with their technique or rules, offer friendly advice or clarification. It’s a great way to promote learning and camaraderie.

Popcorn Paddles: Those loud “pop” sounds might be satisfying, but they can be distracting. Opt for a quieter paddle to maintain focus and avoid irritating your opponents. Volley Zone Violations: Stay out of the kitchen! Volleys must be made from behind the kitchen line to avoid unfair advantage. If you’re unsure where it is, learn the boundaries of the kitchen – it’s not a place for cooking. Trash Talk: Friendly banter is acceptable, but trash-talking isn’t. Remember, it’s a game, not a WWE showdown. Keep your comments respectful and in the spirit of the sport. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer, a courteous court is a happy court. Remember, etiquette is the secret sauce that enhances the flavor of the game. It’s not just about rules; it’s about fostering a community of respect and sportsmanship. Therefore, let’s ensure every pickleball match is a volley of fun, laughter, and wholesome competition.

Eddie Basha Collection Gifted to Heard Museum and Western Spirit On October 9th, friends and philanthropists gathered at the Basha Collection in Chandler to celebrate the announcement of the gift of The Eddie Basha Collection of American Indian and Western American fine art to the Heard Museum and Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. This important collection – one of the largest privatelyowned art collections of its kind – includes more than two thousand works of art that span three centuries, including rare and important

examples of works representing tribes across the Southwest and many other artists. The event began with a welcome by Nadine Basha who reflected on Eddie Basha’s life and legacy. She was joined by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, Gila River Indian Community Governor and Heard Trustee Stephen Roe Lewis, and museum CEOs David Roche of the Heard Museum and Western Spirit’s Todd Bankofier.

What made you start your own company when you were in Radio & TV? We started the company with the wine charm concept of identifying your glass 23 years ago and it took off. From there we designed and distributed several other top products, The Vinturi Wine Aerator, Beaded Bottle Covers and The Box Seat. We launched The Tube Waistband, a modern-day fanny pack in 2014 and our newest product line is Electrolyte Boost. It’s the first ever electrolytes that you don’t have to put in water. Who are you on tour with and who are some of your other current clients? What’s the biggest difference you see with launching a product 23 years ago versus today? Wow so many changes and it seems like it happened overnight! You used to send samples, meet with buyers and go to market for in person meetings to show your goods. You built relationships with the buyers and store managers, and you would keep bringing them new ideas. Now it’s pretty much all social media ads, internet sales and your own website marketing. If you only have one product it’s hard to land in a big box store. Live events are still great for sampling but it all depends on the product.

How did your dad’s accident change you and your family’s life? It made all of us realize that life is short and if you have your health you have everything. Don’t take anything for granted and for sure don’t sweat the small stuff! The difference between my father the coach and any of us is about 3 seconds when he went off that motorcycle and had the accident. He had the best attitude, we all dug deep and pulled up our boots straps to take care of him. We became the A Team like he raised us to be, it was 10 tough years watching him be a quadriplegic. He never said why me, so we never said why us? We made the best of a bad situation.

You’ve been Philanthropic for a long time and chaired over 25 events, who are you passionate about these days? I support several charities and spent many years on the Chrysalis Shelter and Phoenix Suns Charities boards. Near and dear to my heart is The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. I served on that board for 8 years as my father suffered a spinal cord injury from an accident, affecting my life personally. Locally, NotMyKid, I just co-chaired the gala again in April, I’ve been with them from the beginning which started 24 years ago! The National Quarterback Club Charities and The Boxed Up Project are the newest!

What are your hobbies if you have any free time and is retirement in your future? Free time and retirement? I do tend to be a bit of a workaholic, so I’ll keep doing this until the wheels come off! When people ask me to play pickleball I tell them my pickleball is closing deals! My real down time is cooking, it’s great therapy for me and brings out my creative side! My love language has always been food! My family, friends and co-workers are the recipients and taste testers! I bring homemade lunch into the office almost every day when I’m in town. Our staff is full of cooks so it’s fun!

RETROSPECTIVE: CHILDHELP – SARA O’MEARA AND YVONNE FEDDERSON

Childhelp, Dedicated Eradicating Child Abuse For nearly two-thirds of a century, Yvonne Fedderson and Sara O’Meara have made children – specifically neglected, ignored and abused children – their life’s work. Back in 1959, these two ladies who dared to care, founded International Orphans, Inc., and what is known today as Childhelp. Childhelp, a national nonprofit, is dedicated eradicating child abuse and ensuring all children, families and communities live in a safe, stable, supportive and nurturing environment. Over the past 65 years, Childhelp has touched every state and beyond through its National Child Abuse Hotline and Speak Up, Be Safe curriculum that has been implemented in pre-K–12 classrooms – across the U.S. – and is the only evidence-based prevention program in the country. Through the Childhelp Advocacy Center in Downtown Phoenix, the organization is able to verify the degree of child abuse happening and provides therapy through certified counselors. Childhelp envisions a world in which all children are safe and loved unconditionally and promises, “All who enter here will find love.”

Sara O’Meara CO-FOUNDER, CEO AND CHAIRMAN Who I am: Since 1959, I’ve been co-leading the Childhelp mission to bring awareness to the issue of child abuse, develop intervention strategies and pioneer treatment modalities designed to comprehensibly eliminate abuse from every angle. I was president of the Spastic Children’s League and an officer of the National Assistance League. I have served on the boards of international organizations concerned with children’s wellbeing. I was chairman of the International Alliance of Child Abuse and Neglect and served on the board of the National Children’s Alliance. As a board member for the International Union for Child Welfare, I was the sole U.S. representative among First Ladies and ministers of numerous nations. Why I’m here: For more than 16 years, I have seen miracles happen when a child is rescued with love, nurtured with care and inspired by hope. I believe every child who is free from abuse and neglect will reach their ultimate potential. Childhelp changes lives and we are honored to have shepherded millions of children to safety with the help of God and generous donors.

Yvonne Fedderson CO-FOUNDER, PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHAIRMAN Who I am: After graduating from the Pasadena Playhouse, I enjoyed acting for film, television and stage, but my greatest role has been dedicating my life to helping at-risk children for 65 years. Extensive work in a number of humanitarian organizations gave me a framework for volunteer engagement and management that I find invaluable to this day. My nonprofit training took place through the Assistance League, the Mary and Joseph League and several professional organizations. I have served on the board of directors of Children to Children, Inc., the International Alliance on Child Abuse and Neglect and remain an honorary board member for The Dyslexia Foundation. What I do: Each time I share the story of Childhelp, I always mention that volunteers are the backbone of the organization. When it came time to conceive of a national response to child abuse, I knew the job would require a lot of hearts working together to make this dream a reality. The Childhelp Chapters became a network of helping hands advocating for children across the country. I oversee national Childhelp Chapter fundraising initiatives, volunteer coordination, board development, strategic planning, celebrity stewardship and community outreach and awareness.

Sara and I steward Childhelp’s mission in Washington D.C., supporting and developing bills designed to protect children from predators. We expanded those efforts to include our national curriculums: Speak Up Be Safe, which has been implemented in pre-K–12 classrooms across the country and Courage First, which is designed for athletes. Why I’m here: It is impossible to look in the eyes of a child in need and do nothing. In Japan, in 1959, Sara and I discovered a group of orphans that touched our hearts, and we continue to be inspired by the little lives we encounter through this mission of light and love. Childhelp remains true to its vision. The internationally respected nonprofit is the largest organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect as well as at-risk children. Though it has grown beyond their wildest dreams, Sara and Yvonne still work every day for this critical cause and have never forgotten those 11 “throwaway children” in a typhoon that inspired their mission of hope.

Transatlantic Crossings on the Queen Mary By Bev Rosen

The year is early 1960’s. Eight trunks and a family of six were traveling from El Paso, Texas, to New York to set sail on the Cunard HRMS Queen Elizabeth for a 5 day journey to South Hampton England. This was a trip we would do almost every summer to visit my mom’s family that lived in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Mom and Dad were setting sail with 4 small girls and a newborn boy. The glamour and the glitz of traveling in those days was quite the event. It was something to see the enormity of the ship with three brilliant black and red funnels plus the white borders and black sturdy base of the ship. She was Majestic and we were in Awe at that time when staring at this enormous ship. Her sister ship was designed the exact same way. Boarding the ship was spectacular. The stewards and officers were dressed in their best to greet every passenger. We were also dressed in our Sunday best with hose and gloves and of course hair done at the beauty shop. You entered the magnificent ballroom and were greeted by all the staff.

As the ship began to sail, we were all given streamers to throw to the families and people that came to see you off. Lots of white hankies were waving as our journey had begun. As we got situated in our cabins, my sisters and I were thrilled to be running up and down the long corridors which were still at that time separated by class of which we were in second class. We encountered the big wire gates that kept us from entering the First-Class cabins.

Everyday there was a list of things to do that day. In keeping with the British tradition, we were treated daily to 4 o’clock afternoon tea, which included fancy decorated tables with party hats, cakes and small sandwiches along with a full-on band as we played our childhood tea time games. I remember the days of travel we hardly went outside because the weather was constantly cold and cloudy. Ping pong was the game of choice on the outer corridor next to the lifeboats. Dining was the main event, especially at dinner. Everyone was dressed in elegant evening wear. Sharply dressed waiters wearing white gloves were serving from fancy serving trays. After dinner, the adults were off to the main ballroom with a full 25-piece orchestra playing for their dancing pleasure. Of course, for us it was off to the bunkbeds in our cabin with a tiny port hole window. There were no balconies in those days. I remember the pool was in what looked like an inside basement, nothing fancy for sure and the water was freezing.

After 5 days at sea and a few pounds extra for everyone, we were greeted by my Nana, Grandpops and Aunt in a full-on bus they rented to pick us up and all our luggage we had for the summer. It was singing and songs all the way to Kent. For several years, we would repeat this crossing. Only, this time on the RHMS Queen Mary. we found that the Queen Elizabeth had been sold in 1968, caught fire and sank in Hong Kong in 1972. HRMS Queen Mary had as much elegance as her sister ship.

Many years later, when we were teenagers in High School, we made our last voyage on Queen Elizabeth II. All class gates were removed and upgraded but with the British tradition still in tack as the teatimes will always be traditional on one of these unique ships. The Glory That Is Rome By Bill Dougherty For decades, Italy has been on absolutely everyone’s bucked list and with good reason. Italy still has one of the highest standards of living in the world. They say the French are chic, but Italy has them running scared. At lunchtime, men and women in the business districts of Rome can be spotted in the latest fashions. Women walk the streets in stiletto pumps, navigating cobblestone paths in pencil skirts and silk blouses. Italian men are perhaps the vainest men on the planet, and it shows. Starched white dress shirts and very skinny suits are the norm and they still wear ties. Rome still looks like the set of the film La Dolce Vita from 1960. But Rome has far more to offer than stilettos and skinny suits. The city is a vast wonderland of museums, galleries, ancient ruins, and some of the best food in the world. The Trevi Fountain, made famous by Anita Ekberg in the above-mentioned film, is perhaps one the greatest tourist destinations in Rome. Quiet and with soaring views of the iconic fountain, this place is a must for the discriminating traveler. A jazz combo plays softly in the background too. Also, don’t miss The Court Rooftop Bar at Palazzo Manfredi. This divine rooftop bar sits just west of the famed Colosseum. Like The View Trevi Rooftop, the views are impressive; but this place offers boundless complimentary hors d’ oeuvres and views that reach all the way to the often-overcrowded Vatican. Both cocktail lounges are excellent stops to enjoy a different and sophisticated side of the city.

Another great nook lies just to the west of the Spanish Steps, past the fancy shops and further down the street on Via de Babuino. This is one of the most beautiful residential streets in all of Rome and Café

Canova Tadolini lies directly in the center of this majestic neighborhood. Named for the famous sculptor Antonio Canova, the café and bar pay great tribute to the master craftsman and all his artistic finery. This is another not to be missed spot for the elite and a place few if any tourists venture. Navigating Rome is not for the faint of heart. Some may choose to rent cars. A bad idea. Some will brave the use of Italian scooters. However, we found perhaps the best alternative to the crazed traffic of the majestic city. Two Chicks and a Golf Cart is perhaps the very best way to see almost everything. These ladies whisk you through the streets of Rome with ease and great velocity too. They know every vintage shop in the city as well as the ever-growing animal sanctuaries, clever bars, cafes, and all things pasta. If you book this tour, you will see things no one ever sees. You get the picture. Rome is a lot more enticing than it was decades ago. The majority of her citizens now speak English. When I arrived in Italy in the late 1970s, no one spoke English. But that was before KFC, Chipotle, and other American convenience invaded Europe. Funny, Starbucks tried and failed to penetrate the Italian coffee market. Italians refuse to pay more than a dollar for an expresso served in a hot ceramic cup. Some things change, but Rome and her neighboring cities still stay grand and glorious. Japan at a Glance By Bill Dougherty Japan is one of the most impressive countries you will want to visit. There is little to no crime. There is little pollution or trash. Everyone is courteous and very polite. Things run in expeditious fashion, whether it be cars, rails, or planes. Shopping is marvelous, especially on Cat Street in Tokyo, where the ever-emerging Tokyo Streetwear makes an impressive statement. You can find anything you want in this tremendous land. There may be no better place for world-class shopping than here, and we almost forgot to mention that the food is out of this world!

TOKYO When booking a tour of Japan, it is important to remember that only the under 30 crowd speaks English. This is a very proud and cloistered nation. There are few if any signs in English anywhere. We highly recommend Firebird or Kinsington Tours. To see Japan in all her beauty is very difficult on your own. Both tour companies are excellent, and a car and driver meet you at all destinations. Just navigating the Tokyo train station is enough to send you over the edge. When you disembark a train and see a tour guide in a suit

HAKONE Mount Fuji and Ashi Lake are both found in this beautiful hillside city. It’s considered to be one of the most picturesque and breath taking spots in all of Japan. Hot springs, babbling brooks, and cherry blossoms make this a must see on your way around the island. Spas abound here and relaxation and fine dining are noted in this beautiful enclave. You will never tire of fine Japanese beef and seafood here either.

TAKAYAMA Perched high in the mountains, whether winter or summer, Takayama is not to be missed. The city is filled with elegant shopping districts, tremendous restaurants, and beautiful hotels. It’s also home to some of the country’s best-loved summer festivals. The city is blanketed with blue tile roofed traditional Japanese homes and lodges too. In the winter, it’s snowy and beautifully white. In the spring, snow empties into rivers and brooks and cherry blossoms blanket the countryside.

KANAZAWA Located in the heart of Japan, this vibrant mid-size city is often considered a mini-Tokyo. This impressive quaint city is comprised of manicured gardens, beautiful buildings, and delightful shopping. Kenrokuen garden is everything you would think of in a splendid Japanese setting. Tea houses abound and Oyama Shrine is a must see before leaving.

KYOTO If you get to see on other city than Tokyo, make it in Kyoto. Every thing you dreamed of is here. Traditional Japanese architecture, tempura, hibachi steaks, Japanese garlic bread and some of the best Asian soups imaginable. Traditional tea house ceremonies are at your fingertips. It’s not that uncommon to spot a Geisha here either. Its perhaps one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It encompasses all-things Japan. Even if you run out of time Kyoto is an easy Bullet Train ride from Tokyo and well worth the trip. You must see Kyoto.

A Beautiful Walk Back in Time By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean

My Mom told me when I was growing up that I was born a generation too late. I grew up in the 60’s yet I was fascinated with Sinatra, Etta James and Nat King Cole. They were my soul and I thought often about what it would be like to live in that era of class and style that defined a generation. A dimly lit restaurant with faux leather seats wreaking of cigarette smoke and Hollywood aristocracy. Deals made and delicious dinners served. A mid mod homage to the stark contrast of wealth and minimalist grandeur. There is a unique restaurant that revisits this exact feeling. Welcome to Hearth 61. Nestled under the silent watch of Camelback Mountain, Mountain Shadows Resort brings the de-escalated elegance and sophistication of Hearth 61 to the forefront of the valleys tony restaurant scene. There are cozy sitting areas and a sparkling open kitchen. The outside patio overlooks Camelback Mountain and a cool yet vibrant swimming pool.

While enjoying our perfect dirty martinis, a plate of warm Noble bread was delivered with the most sumptuous basil parmesan pesto dipping sauce. This gave us time to dissect the impossibly diverse menu that in addition to tried and true favorites boasted a staggering list of vegetarian and vegan options such as fennel stew and sweet potato agnolotti to name a few. Our first vegan appetizer was an impeccably prepared tempura crisped oyster mushrooms. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with a crunchy and sweet black garlic base with butternut squash. Thought you couldn’t do vegan? You will quickly change your mind. Our second appetizer was a briny and delicate Hiramasa Crudo nestled on a white soy vinaigrette with crispy rice chips and fris’ee. We next enjoyed a fresh burrata salad with roasted beets, arugula and crispy lavash. We were savoring our tastes and smells, listening to the subtle jazzy pop music that wafted just loud enough to hear but soft enough to hear each others’ conversations, when our entrees began to arrive. Under the talented and exquisite attention to detail leadership of Executive Chef Charles Wiley, formerly of Sanctuary and the Hotel Valley Ho, Hearth 61 delivers on every level. Our first entree was a gastronomic masterpiece of beef tenderloin. Perfect medium rare in a red wine demi-glace nestled atop truffled mashed potatoes and a bleu cheese fondue. Delicate and powerful at the same time with firm yet tender broccolini. Our second entree was the Chef’s selection of three enormous and perfectly seared tiger shrimp in a delicate beurre blanc with local Shriners chorizo sausage. A symphony of flavors with crispy frise’ red radish, sugar snap peas with roasted parsnips.

One of the many advantages to having a restaurant within a resort is that there are rooms available. Looking back I should have secured one to retreat to between courses. I need to put that in my notes. The desserts began to arrive, the first of which was a peach panna cotta with a pistachio crust. Pumpkin bourbon creme brulee’ with orange pearls was not far behind and equally decadent. The crown was a vegan apple crumble with a pecan gelato and apple compote.
