Remembering ... Jane Norris By Bill Dougherty

You knew the second Jane Norris and her husband Bob walked into a cocktail reception. Both looked as though they had been sent from central casting to play the parts of wealthy and very beautiful aristocrats. They were absolutely stunning. Jane, a Trendsetter from our very first class of women in 1985, passed away a few weeks ago. She left an amazing legacy for not only Arizona but also Colorado. Jane always used to say “we love them both.” In 1994 I was introduced to the Norris’s on one of my very first outings as a reporter for Trends. I knew the second I met them that they were indeed a tremendous force to be reckoned with! However, after just moments with them, I quickly realized that they were two of the nicest and most down-to-earth people you could know. They smiled the entire time we talked. They told me that they divided their time between Paradise Valley and a horse ranch just outside Colorado Springs. Jane, an accomplished and well respected rider, told me that she enjoyed horses and her grandchildren more than anything else. Yet both agreed that you had to give back and that’s why they were there. I was spell bound within 5 minutes of meeting them. They were amazing! To list Jane’s philanthropic endeavors would take an entire page of this publication. Her gracious and elegant hand touched countless charities and organizations here and in Colorado. She worked tirelessly for the Barrow Women’s Board, the Phoenix Heart Ball, the Scottsdale Honor Ball, Trends Charitable Fund and dozens of horse related groups and boards just to name a few. The last time I saw Jane was at the annual Barrow Christmas party held at the home of Nancy and Robert Spetzler. It was evident that health issues were taking their wicked toll on this fine lady. But Jane was there dressed to the nines complete with her blinding smile and ever present wit. People like Jane Norris only come around once. Her extreme beauty, style combined with a tireless quest to make for a better landscape and future for those less fortunate were characteristics to be marveled at. Jane never let her success and privilege get in the way of who she was. She was lovely, kind and always caring to all. She will be missed.

At a closed door meeting back in early December of last year, yours truly together with the entire Trends Charitable Fund Board poured through dozens of charitable resumes. The following ladies will be celebrated later this year at an all new and very top secret event. Pat Bondurant, Kim Cullum, Melinda Gulick, Julie Kroot, Martha Martin, Sherri Quinn, Katie Scardello, Molly Stockley, Christine Watson and Erika Williams. This is the VERY first award in the state to honor women for their outstanding civic and charitable efforts and it was founded by this publication in 1985! Congratulations ladies. The other afternoon Carol and Larry Clemmensen threw open the doors of their palatial and very beautiful Paradise Valley estate. Everyone you know and adore made the champagne reception to raise their glass to lovely Laura Grafman. It’s no secret that Laura has been instrumental for decades now in putting the Scottsdale Health Care Foundation’s Honor Ball at the top of the heap in Phoenix high society circles. The lovely reception had originally been scheduled at the equally beautiful home of Ina and Murray Manaster. However a Poseidon Adventure like title wave of water/flood took care of that. You get the picture? Anyway, the Clemmensens were kind enough to offer their home and the party

went on as planned. Some of the loveliest ladies in town dropped by to thank Mrs. Grafman for the truly amazing things she has done and continues to do. Names: Patty Withycombe, Ellie Shapiro, Harriet Friedland, Shelley Adams, Nancy Harris, Claudia Critchfield, Ruth Lavinia, Ellen Katz, Penny Galarneau, Betty McRae, Helene Presutti, Heather Greenbaum, and Judy Bowe were there with many more just like them. Susie Muzzy did a splendid job creating the special event and even had door prizes, something you seldom see any more. I’ve known Laura Grafman for decades. To know her is to love her. There’s no one out there that deserves this more than she. I know Virginia Piper is looking down from heaven and is so very proud of what Laura has accomplished. Don’t you agree? By the way, who is Hollis Volk and where has this true Southern lady been hiding? After that, we decided to meet Jill Krigsten and her handsome and very dapper new friend Rod Riley at Steak 44. I’ve been in a lot of restaurants over the years. Yet I’ve never seen one quite like this. It’s no secret our Valley is inundated with steakhouses. But this one is different. Speaking of celebrations, Fresh Start Women’s Foundation has a lot to be thankful for as well. It seems like it was just yesterday, when founders Pat Petznick and Beverly Stewart gathered a small group of people at Saks Fifth Avenue for a posh fashion show and cocktails. Can you believe that was 20 years ago? Where has the time gone? I was there that evening as a reporter for this publication. It was amazing. We all know that everything Bev and Pat have touched has turned to gold. I strongly feel it is because they are as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. Remember I’ve said for years, you get back what you put out and that’s precisely why Fresh Start is so successful. Congratulations! Elsewhere, I’ve been told Childhelp raised a ton of money a few weeks ago at the Arizona Biltmore. I’m not surprised. When you put beautiful ladies such as Char Hubble, Deborah Pshebniski and Erika Williams together, the end result is magic! I knew when I attended the kick off last fall at the home of Stacie and Richard Stephenson, that the 3 dames would hit the ball out of the park. This event showcased the talents of my good friend Judi Yates who ran the behind the scenes stuff. You should also know that Stacie Stephenson is one of the nicest and most gracious hosts around. The night the Stephensons opened their hill top estate, Stacie walked around the entire party and introduced

herself to all. Talk class and refinement. That seldom happens in today’s world. We also stop this month to recognize Beth Ames Swartz as our artist in residence for 2016. Beth has a lot to celebrate too. Not only has the internationally known artist just completed a fantastic documentary with the help of Suzanne Johnson of Gnosis Media fame, but also celebrated her 80th birthday. We all lunched together the other afternoon at Sumo Maya. Beth looks amazing! I remember the first time I saw her work in 1975 at the home of Diane and Jim Wootton. I was enthralled. I still am more than 40 years later. We are delighted to celebrate her first series in this issue and will continue our journey with her throughout the year. We hope you enjoy her many expressions, moods and mediums. Trends Magazine names Beth Ames Swartz its “Artist-of-the-Year 2016” Beth Ames Swartz has had a remarkable artistic career for over fifty-five years including more than seventy museum and gallery exhibitions, three books, five catalogs, numerous critically acclaimed national reviews and three traveling museum exhibitions. Swartz received the Arizona Governor’s Individual Artist Award in 2001 and was the subject of a Phoenix Art Museum retrospective in 2002. ACA Galleries in New York most recently mounted a major exhibition of her art. Trends Magazine names Beth Ames Swartz its “Artist-of-the-Year 2016”; we plan to publish in coming months additional pages familiarizing Trends readers with the many facets of this wonderful artist’s fabulous painting.

A gifted artist even as a child, Swartz studied at the Art Students League in New York in the late 1940s. After graduating from the prestigious High School of Music and Art in New York (remember the musical, “Fame”), she earned a B.S. degree from Cornell University and an M.A. from New York University. She moved to Arizona in 1959 and to Paradise Valley in 1970. Initially, Swartz felt out of place, a stranger in a strange land, where desert rocks, prickly vegetation and open spaces contrasted with the more familiar urban settings of her youth. Throughout the 1960s, Swartz resolved her feelings toward her new environment by painting works on paper in a style that she labels Abstracted Landscape. Beginning in

the 1970s, Swartz moved almost completely away from figurative representations in her art into pure abstraction. Swartz say, “I explore systems of knowledge, translating philosophical concepts into aesthetic visual experiences.” In the early 1970s, Swartz began merging and infusing her art with spiritual concerns. Influenced by a Kandinsky essay entitled Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Swartz came under the spell of Alan Watts, writer and speaker, best known as an interpreter and popularizer of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. She embarked on a series of works on paper collectively entitled “Meditation.” [example: MED714] By 1975 Swartz decided to paint individual series of the “five elements” echoing analogs in early Greek and Islamic protoscientific theories postulating the nature of things. Essentially the same theory may be found in studies of the Cabala, Hinduism and Buddhism as well as in the Chinese five phases or five states of change.

Most examples presented by Trends are from her “Earthflow” series.

Critics responded positively to these early works on paper, one going so far as to call Swartz “the master of the controlled accident.” In 1978, works from her Fire series became the first art exhibition held at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts.

Fern Mallis, Honored Guest of the Arizona Costume Institute Interviewed by Bill Dougherty You created Fashion Week, why did you sell it? It really wasn’t my decision. It was a collective board decision. CFDA decided to sell to the event company IMG. They took the event global. It’s been a huge success. What’s your next big idea? I’m not prepared to answer that quite yet. Who do you consider the 2 most underrated designers of all time? Geoffrey Beene and Charles James. The late poet Sylvia Plath said her experience at Mademoiselle was anything but fun. Describe yours during the Age of Aquarius? It all depended on the editor you were assigned to. My experience was fantastic. When I returned from Europe later that summer, the magazine offered me a job. I first recruited in collages throughout the country to find new Guest Editors. Then later I held various merchandising positions for the publication. What do you see as the next big trend? I don’t know. But I can tell you, I think “trends” as we know them have ended. I suspect the focus will be durability of fabric and the quality and craftsmanship of the design. How did you get your start in the business and who was your mentor? All my relatives worked in the Garment District so I guess you could say I was hands on from a small age. It was my family first, then winning the Guest Editor position at Mademoiselle in 1969.

Why did you decide to write your book? The critical masses were interested in what they were reading about. Then Rizzoli pitched the idea to me. We did 90 minute interviews and filled the book with rich photographs to accompany the interviews. The end result was very nice. Carolina Herrera said when she dies so does her line. What do you think about that? I didn’t know she had said that? Very interesting. There are lines rich in heritage. They are comprised of classical styles and often a fragrance. So to throw all that away would be sad. The only problem I see in this is when someone or a business buys a defunct line and tries to resurrect it. Often the designer who is hired, knows little about the original designer or their vision. We’ve seen this with Halston, Andre Courreges and Jack Fath. It would be nice however to take the money these huge lines are making and invest them in a new designer no one knows. What impact do you think social media has had on the fashion world? You have to change with the times. Social media is the result of a new generation. They may or may not have everything correct, but people are listening to them. There is an equal balance. Read what you want, take something from a blogger, then take something from a seasoned professional. We live in a democratic society, so look at both sides. When did you finally say to yourself, I’ve made it? I don’t know that I have. But it is nice when you’re sitting in a restaurant in Honolulu and the owner and chef appear to meet you. It’s kind of fun!

The Heard Museum Welcomes David Roche Interviewed by Bill Dougherty

Why did you decide to come to the Heard? The Heard Museum is one of the most important museums in the world dedicated to American Indian art, and an Arizona icon. I have visited the Heard Museum countless times over the past four decades. With each visit, I have been inspired by the art, gained knowledge from the exhibitions and found sanctuary in its beautiful, historic campus. The opportunity to represent the museum, work on fulfilling its mission and ensure that the museum reaches the broadest possible audience, locally and globally, strikes me as exciting and important work. What do you consider your greatest hour professionally? I believe it’s yet to come and I am optimistic that it will be at the Heard Museum. Tell us a little bit about your background? The defining aspect of my life has been my interest in American Indian art and culture. Growing up in Chicago, my parents introduced me to the art of the Hopi, Zuni and Navajo and my interest in all things relating to Native American art and culture grew from there. Many of the choices in my adult life, personally and professionally, including traveling and living in the Southwest and my work as a specialist at Sotheby’s in New York; were influenced by this interest. It’s been an incredible journey. Who are your heroes? My heroes are teachers and artists because, when successful, they transform lives and bring inspiration, knowledge and hope to the world.

What’s your worst habit? I don’t share my desserts. If you could have 3 pieces of art, what would they be? Don’t make me choose! Although I will share with you that one of my favorite works of art resides in the Heard Museum’s collection and is on exhibit right now. Visit the museum and I will show it to you. What are your upcoming plans for the Heard? The Heard Museum has been a leader in the field of American Indian art and culture for nearly 100 years. In order to continue our leadership position, we will need to innovate and set new standards for excellence within the industry. My immediate plan is to familiarize myself with the museum’s outstanding collection and distinguished history as well as get to know the talented group of people that work here.

To anyone familiar with classic modern architecture in the Valley or for that matter the world, Michael P. Johnson stands alone. For decades this master of what many believe to be one of the finest living architects has quietly resided in Cave Creek with little fanfare. Michael Johnson is not one to call attention to himself. Unlike Frank Lloyd Wright or Al Beadle, perhaps the two best known architects of Arizona, Mr. Johnson is a man of few words who has remained in the shadows. I find it incredible that Mr. Johnson has been honored, recognized and awarded throughout the world, yet he receives little praise in a community and state he has helped establish through his masterful and heart stopping designs. Author Louise Noelle has done an extraordinary job tracing the early works of Mr. Johnson through the years to his now international fame. The book should be on anyone’s coffee table or library book shelf who enjoys a study in some of the finest modern architecture in the world. It’s high time the state of Arizona stops and recognizes Michael P. Johnson as one of the truly great assets to living spaces that we have. I’m just glad that Louise Noelle did it first!

‘Killing Reagan’ by Bill O’Reilly Reviewed by Bill Dougherty It’s interesting that bestselling author Bill O’Reilly spares Ronald and Nancy Reagan almost nothing in his latest bestseller Killing Reagan. Although Mr. O’Reilly claims no political affiliation, most think the man is an ultra-conservative Republican. Therefore upon selecting this book, one might think it would be a favorable story. Not so. From the earliest pages, the former President is portrayed as a simpleton, a B movie actor and a gallivanting lady’s man. His marriage to Jane Wyman, who bears a striking resemblance to second wife Nancy Davis another B actor, is quickly overshadowed by Ms. Wyman’s fame. Nancy Davis almost stalks the actor, so marriage becomes inevitable. Thus the cunning and often devious Nancy prepares her new husband for skyrocketing fame. Children are neatly tucked away in boarding schools and will later enact their vengeance on their far removed mom and dad. The book also explores the state of mental illness in America. Would be assassin John Henkley is free to walk the streets. The President passes a bill to return mental health care facilities to states in order to increase the national defense budget. Thus the Reagan assassination attempt plays out like a cleverly crafted Italian opera. The book is a must read for anyone interested in American history lite.

‘Lady Bird and Lyndon’ By Betty Boyd Caroli Reviewed by Bill Dougherty

Make no mistake, this eloquently written book is far more a biography of the first lady than that of the much written about LBJ. However, the book is packed full of little known details about a partnership between two very complex people that eventually lands Lyndon Johnson in the White House on that awful afternoon in November 1963. Touching lightly on both the upbringings of the Johnsons and their Midas touch, the book explores the privilege and extreme wealth given to Lady Bird and the struggles and poverty of her husband. By the time they arrive in Washington in the 1950s, they are the ultimate nonpartisan power couple, long before the term existed. None are better suited for the White

House. Yet they are quickly over shadowed by the young senator from Massachusetts and his stunning wife. Although Lyndon Johnson reluctantly accepts the vice presidency in 1960, it is the president’s little brother Bobby who advises JFK, leaving saddened Lyndon out in the cold. The Johnsons feel it’s impossible to follow in the footsteps of Camelot. Yet they waste little time building the Great Society and beautifying the country respectively. Bad advice on the Kennedy administration’s Vietnam involvement, sends a depression prone President into despair. Their daughters; one bookish, one reckless; fall easy prey to the press. LBJ’s womanizing is also well documented. Lady Bird maintains as the ever people-pleasing glue as the

administration noise dives into a Greek tragedy. Ms. Boyd Caroli presents an excellent view of not only the Johnson family, but a presidency that started with such amazement and ended so fractured.
