LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to June
By Bill Dougherty
People are talking about Carolyn and Craig Jackson. Not only do they preside over the world’s greatest collector car auctions, but together they have done monumental things for local and national charities. Anyway, at the opening gala a few Sunday nights ago, it was announced that the dynamic couple are now the honorary chairs of the Phoenix Heart Ball for 2023. This should make Charlene Berge Blum very pleased since she will chair the oldest charity ball in Arizona next fall. Together the Jackson’s have accomplished great things and we know they will both continue to soar. We are so pleased and fortunate to have them in our community.
Elsewhere, the pARty held on behalf of the Phoenix Art Museum was yet again a smashing success! Chairs Ellen and Howard Katz did a marvelous job reinventing the much-anticipated event. This year, merry makers were treated to a Geoffrey Beane exhibition. While the showcase was smashing, to say the least, Mr. Beane may not be a household name to even the most steadfast fashion zealot and with good reason. John Fairchild, the often cruel and very vindictive publisher of Women’s Wear Daily and later W Magazine,
permanently banned Mr. Beane from its pages in 1967. Apparently, the designer refused to give Mr. Fairchild and his publications a glimpse of Lynda Bird Johnson’s wedding gown. Mr. Beane felt it would be tremendously disloyal to the President and his daughter. Though Geoffrey Beane would get the last laugh with licensing agreements for his hugely popular perfumes and colognes. They would make the American fashion designer a multi-millionaire many times over. The two men never buried the hatchet.
GOTCHA!
This publication and its charitable arm were shocked and disheartened to witness the behavior of a new Trendsetter. Married into affluence, we expected her to be kind and courteous. Unfortunately, our encounters with her proved to be rude and abrasive. You go out of your way to honor a member of the community only to discover they are not who they seem. How sad!

FULL CIRCLE GALA 2022
Event Co-Chairs Char Augustine, Lisa James and Kay Oliver are pleased to announce The Be Kind People Project’s FULL CIRCLE Gala held on the field at Chase Field exceeded their goal to the benefit of more than 75,000 students who will receive services as a result of the October 1st event. The annual event had been on hiatus due to the pandemic and the committee sought to make the return a once in a lifetime experience for the attendees. More than 500 guests wearing sparkly sneakers were greeted by the Glendale High School Marching Band and escorted by a team of
volunteers to either the VIP dinner in the private club overlooking the field or directly to the field to enjoy appetizers, cocktails, field games, photo ops and more. As is always the case, THE BE KIND CREW® presented a dynamic onstage production. All money raised for this event provides teachers comprehensive character education to help their students thrive emotionally and academically, while building respectful and responsible interpersonal relationship and social skills.

ACI LUNCHEON
Just as the 2022 social season came to a close, the Arizona Costume Institute unveiled a heart-stopping afternoon at the Phoenix Art Museum. Occasionally the famed institute has the opportunity to showcase a tremendous talent. And in late 2022, they did just that. Rubin Singer, one of the most prolific American Fashion designers, lent his talents, good looks, wit and humor to the afternoon. Dee Dee Vecchione and Jill Krigsten did
a remarkable job chairing the great afternoon. Ina Manaster served as the honorary chair. The sold-out luncheon attracted some of the most beautifully dressed ladies in the social community as well. We are very thankful to have Helen Jean, the Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design, running the show. She’s done an amazing job. Virtual violet: Eileen Yeung and Priscilla Nicholas, both stunning in shades of purple, violet and lavender.

Be Mine Valentine!
By Patsy Lowry
“To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.”
– David Viscotti
Love makes our world go round and round and round. What better time than Valentine’s Day to express and share LOVE and affection for treasured friends with a Valentine’s Day LOVE dinner! Everyone dressed in their “LOVE” outfits. Each guest participated by bringing their 20% which included:
1. The main course and bread. This guest also brought containers to take home the extra food he made for the main course. (Such a nice touch.)
2. Appetizers and dessert
3. Salad
4. Wine and sparkling water
5. Champagne
6. Red and pink flowers
7. I set the table
The occasion gave us an opportunity to articulate how much we all meant to each other. Everyone gave great thought to what they brought to make the evening a lasting and loving experience. Remember, more is always more, and never, ever, enough. Happy Valentine’s Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KIDS IN FOCUS
A festive atmosphere, talented female mariachis and a colorful “day of the dead” décor greeted guests as they arrived on the center plaza. Supporters perused a powerful exhibit of photographs created by at-risk kids while they enjoyed savory bites and a signature drink by Tito’s Handmade Vodka.
Guests enjoyed the silent auction, raffle and spirited live auction with auctioneer Anna Aja. Overall, a smashing, memorable night that raised a ton of needed funds for Kids in Focus to provide mentorship and support for at-risk kids via their photography programs.

Childsplay Gala Chair 2023
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF
I was born and raised in Southern California – attended Bell High School – on Bell Avenue – in Bell, CA we are talking small time girl here ... I was fortunate to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara and moved to Arizona in 1969 .. Married to my sweetheart, Johnny Price, a third generation Arizonan with two wonderful sons and five precious grandchildren ... I have been in the Mortgage Industry 40 years and truly love it !
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN CHILDSPLAY
Last year my dear friend – and I must say incredibly talented artist and designer, Ruby Farias, invited me to be on her WOW Gala Committee. I instantly fell in love with Childsplay, their staff, their hearts and Mission which is “To create theatre so strikingly original in form, content or both that it instills in young people an enduring awe, love and respect for the medium, thus preserving imagination and wonder, those hallmarks of childhood that are the keys to the future”
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO
Established in 1977. Childsplay has educated and inspired more than six million young people, teachers and families. They serve an average annual audience of 250,000 by taking professional actors into elementary and middle schools with original programs. More than half of this audience lives at or below poverty level. Many of these schools have absolutely no art programs
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT
Being a young person today is more difficult than ever as they are bombarded by 24 hour media information – much of which is MISinformation. Research shows that students who engage in theatre and the arts improve their 2l51 Century skills, including critical thinking, literacy and empathy. Childsplay tackles social issues such as female empowerment, food insecurity, bullying, and teen suicide – which has heartbreakingly doubled in the past decade ... After each production, they have a “safe place” to ask questions regarding these topics
WHAT IS NEW THIS YEAR
We are inaugurating the “It Takes A Village” award honoring community leaders. The 2023 recipients are the fabulous Betty
McRae and her beautiful, accomplished daughters Beth McRae and Stephanie McRae Campbell ... This family truly understands the meaning of generosity and love
Please join “our village” April 15, 2023 at the Clayton House in Scottsdale for exciting surprises, dinner, music, auctions and lots of fun. Brandon Lee, former TV Anchor, Author and Artist will MC the event.

Ways to “Love Your Home” PART 1
By Barbara Kaplan, www.BarbaraKaplan.com
Enjoy being empowered & inspired with these ideas to create your happy home!
1 HOW TO HANG PICTURES. Change or re-arrange wall art placement. For drama you can hang larger pieces in smaller spaces and smaller pieces in large places. Sometimes the art doesn’t have to be centered. Be sure not to hang wall art too high. Make sure art is not blocked when viewed while seated.
2 EMBRACE COLOR. Color is key. Don’t be afraid to express yourself with color anywhere and everywhere. See how much you can handle living with and of course make sure you “love” the color. Start slowly with an accent wall or pillow. Then you can add an area rug or chair. Keep going and have fun.
3 WHAT TO DO WITH PHOTOS.
Take a treasured photograph out of your photo album and put it into a frame. Make sure the frame matches your room, so it won’t look out of place and detract from the picture. If you add a backing that matches the room, you can replace the picture often regardless of the picture size.
4 WHAT KIND OF LIGHTING?
Is the lighting in your work areas sufficient? Task lighting can be installed under cabinetry in kitchens or offices. Always light the areas where you need to see ... otherwise ambient lighting creates “shadows” for mood and interest and highlights accessories. Lighting can also spotlight focal points of a room.
5 THE PILLOW TRICK.
You’ve probably heard about the pillow trick. But sometimes it only takes one fabulous pillow to make the difference. Especially if you can match it to a piece of furniture in the room that you paint the same color.
6 THE REAL ENTRY TO YOUR HOME IS OUTSIDE. The “outside” entry is what people see first. Buy a large new mat that coordinates with your door, if possible. Position the mat like a runner so people step on it several times, which helps clean their shoes. Make sure your doorbell is clean so people will feel good about ringing your bell.
YOUR BEST LIFE BEGINS WITH A HOME THAT INSPIRES YOU
7 TREAT YOURSELF TO FLOWERS. Buy flowers when you go to the supermarket. It only takes one stem in a small vase that you love and place it somewhere just for you ... by the kitchen sink when you do the dishes or by your bathroom sink when you brush your teeth. If you buy a bouquet, you can separate the flowers and place them anywhere.
8 YOUR GARAGE CAN FEEL LIKE AN EXTENSION OF YOUR HOME Paint/de-clutter/cleanup/ and even hang pictures in your garage. Definitely keep it clean. After all, it may be the last thing you see when you leave and the first thing that greets you when you arrive home.
9 HAVE A PRETTY PANTRY. Imagine a pretty pantry. Build custom height shelves for your food. Customize for your smaller and larger size items. You’ll have more space, visibility, and organization. Paint the walls and shelves complementary colors you enjoy. Give the pantry door and handle its own style. Store your food items in visually pleasing containers. Create a sense of organized pleasure.
10 LOVE YOUR HALLWAYS. That could mean different things. Either take down the hodge-podge collection of family photos and frame them all the same for a unified look or create a gallery for art with proper lighting or thirdly make your hallways a calm space
with nothing on the walls to create a transition from room to room. Your choice ... which feels right to you?
11 CLUTTER, AGAIN! It’s time to de-clutter. Take a walk through your house and take away anything that is broken, that you don’t like, too dirty to get really clean, or has a bad memory. This will give you the chance to appreciate more what you have or replace it with something better.
12 CREATE YOUR OWN SANCTUARY. If you don’t have one yet, create a special and private place just for you where you can do anything you want, like read or meditate and where you will feel comfortable and relaxed ... a place where you feel nurtured and secure. A place no one else can touch or use. Even if it’s a chair or pillow on the floor with a lamp or candle ... it is yours.
13 GIVE YOUR CHILD A TIDY ROOM. If you struggle to keep a child’s room tidy, involve the child in creating space for their needs. By providing a place for everything they will learn to put things away. Decorative storage pieces can be purchased inexpensively and don’t forget to utilize space under the bed for storage bins. Install ready-made units to organize the closet that will grow with the child’s needs.
14 “BE YOUR OWN INTERIOR DESIGNER”. Take all the furniture out of a room you want to change. Removing and replacing each piece one at a time. Observe what happens as you create empty spaces. Some pieces can be totally eliminated. Be sure to try each piece in a different place than before. Try angling the furniture or changing the flow. Most importantly, take time to get used to the change.

Office Etiquette
By Heather Wagenhals
New year, new job, new opportunity for advancement. Here’s how to put your best foot forward with simple guidelines for better office etiquette.
Avoid:
GOSSIP. Listening to gossip is as bad as spreading it. You wouldn’t appreciate other people mischaracterizing you without first-hand experience so avoid entertaining it.
TMI. There is a difference between being personable, professional, and oversharing. Workplaces can be competitive, avoid your personal issues being a source of professional scrutiny. Instead, make connections with colleagues over mutual interests to build rapport.
AVOID SNAP JUDGMENTS. Effective communication is challenging, even for the socially adept, so exercise patience and listen fully first, then ask questions to elicit more clarity.
Do:
DRESS FOR SUCCESS. Always be one step ahead of the acceptable dress code. If you interact with the public, make sure wardrobe/uniforms are always cleaned, pressed, and replaced after 25 washes or fading/staining. It’s difficult to erase a bad first impression.
BE EARLY. Meetings are scheduled for specific times, which means you need to arrive beforehand, so you are seated, properly acquainted with attendees and ready to go.
BE ORGANIZED. Your briefcase, workspace and attitude speak volumes about you without ever saying a word.
BE MORE KIND. How you behave towards others, even those you don’t particularly like matters. You never know when they may become your supervisor or have influence over your career path.

Latest Trends for 2023
By Christopher Coffin
It’s a new year with plenty to cheer about if you’re designing and decorating your home! My best advice is to do it in a way that fits your lifestyle and makes you feel great.
Here are the latest styles and trends we are seeing in the design industry for 2023.
White kitchens are here to stay, although natural woods like cerused oak cabinetry paired with Calcutta marble or quartz countertops creates an alternative option.
Color is strong for 2023 for both interior fabrics, wall coverings, drapes and accessories. We are seeing everything from red and orange shades to unexpected tones of green. Elevated shades of blush are also trending for private areas like bedrooms, bathrooms and even closets.
30
DESIGN AND STYLE
Wallpapered powder rooms are all the craze. You can show off large prints and color in a small space to make a big impact.
Wellness rooms are replacing home gyms as more homeowners are spending time at home. This allows a special place in the home to relax, meditate or use for activities like yoga, exercise or an inhome spa.
The mass produced ‘fast furniture’ that sold furiously during the pandemic is trending out and being replaced by well-made antique furniture or other investment pieces that won’t end up in the landfill. Rather than buying something cheap to get the look of the moment, people are being selective about what they place in their homes so they can enjoy it for years to come.
Performance fabrics continue to be a favorite choice for interior upholstery, drapery fabric and accessories like pillows or washable rugs. Many mimic linen, velvets and textured fabrics but are outdoor related and stain resistant.
2023 has some amazing design trends on sparkling display. Even if you’re not remodeling, you can’t go wrong in taking a look, because it expands your awareness of what’s out there. I’ve found that when I look at my spaces with a fresh perspective, I can often repurpose pieces I already own to create a brand-new look! Happy New Year!

BARROW GRAND BALL 2023
The Arizona Biltmore started the 2023 season with the sold-out and much-anticipated Barrow Grand Ball. Since 1965 this evening has been a cornerstone in raising needed funds for the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Since its inception, the institute has gained worldwide recognition in various degrees of the medical field in a vast number of areas. This year, Diane Might did a marvelous job as the Barrow Women’s Board President.
She was assisted by Amy Cohn and Erin Gogolak, who chaired the ball. Short on speeches and long on dinner and dancing, the ball proved spectacular. The recently remodeled Grand ballroom was filled will merriment and flora. It was a lovely affair! Belle of the ball, Andrea Pappas stunning in black and white.

Phoenix Art Museum
At his core, Geoffrey Beene was a fashion rebel. The winner of eight Coty American Fashion Critics Awards and three Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, he ignored trends and instead designed garments that began as geometric shapes before evolving into silhouettes that were unparalleled in their combination of luxury, design, and comfort and moved naturally with the human form.
From February 1 – July 23, 2023 at Phoenix Art Museum, MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene offers a rare and intimate view into Beene’s work and career. Spanning three galleries, the exhibition begins with materials and ephemera from Beene’s personal archive, on loan from Authentic Brands Group and on view publicly for the first time. These candid photographs, contact sheets, and more provide unprecedented insight into a remarkable design process and modern vision for women’s clothing.
A second gallery features ensembles drawn from the Museum’s Geoffrey Beene Archive and gifted to the Museum in 2019 by Patsy Tarr, longtime Beene patron, president of the 2wice Arts Foundation, and founder and publisher of 2wice magazines and books. These garments, many of which the designer created specifically for Tarr, illuminate Beene’s vision for a fully interchangeable wardrobe of jumpsuits, boleros, jackets, and evening gowns.
The exhibition’s final gallery explores how Beene merged design with ballet to re-imagine fashion-show presentations. In the mid-1990s, Beene presented his clothing on ballet dancers, focusing attention to the essence of his work – movement. Video interviews with the models, dancers, muses, and collaborators who knew the designer best bring to life the brilliance and wit of the American fashion icon.
MOVE: The Modern Cut of Geoffrey Beene is organized by Phoenix Art Museum with the support of Authentic Brands Group, LLC. It is made possible through the generosity of Major Sponsors Ellen and Howard C. Katz, Partner Sponsor The Virginia M. Ullman Foundation, Contributing Sponsors Miriam and Yefim Sukhman, and Media Sponsor KJZZ/KBACH.

THE pARTy 2023
The Phoenix Art Museum pulled out all the stops for the 2023 pARTy. This year event chairs for the night were none other that Ellen and Howard Katz. They did a great job! Honorary chair Patsy Tarr was also on hand to lend her support to the festivities. Co-chairs for the gala included Jacquie and Bennett Dorrance, Carole and Arte Moreno, Dionne and Francis Najafi, Judy and Don Opatrny, and Sue and
Bud Selig. The evening paid a well-deserved homage to famed American fashion designer Geoffrey Beane, who is often overlooked for his amazing contribution to not only American but international fashion. Overall, it was a marvelous night. All of this must have made the new and very savvy Sybil Harrington Director and CEO Jeremy Mikolajczak incredibly pleased. Vineyard Wine Tasting and Culinary Extravaganza
By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean
Nestled amongst a seemingly endless sea of high desert tall grasses and the majestic mountain tops of the Mustang and Whetstones lies a striking contrast to the surrounding vista. It rises from the 5000 foot elevation of Elgin Arizona like a group of monoliths pushing their way to the surface from the earth below. A juxtaposition of modern and ancient. At a distance it is somewhat mysterious and lures you to explore closer as to what you are seeing. Upclose it becomes the spectacular vision of architect Thamarit “Tommy” Suchart and Patricia Chen of Chen + Suchart Studio. This is the wine tasting and culinary extravaganza, Los Milics Vineyards.
Los Milics Vineyards is the brainchild of Pavle Milic, a legendary enthusiast of Arizona wines and close friend Mo Garfinkle, a former aviation consultant who had a dream of one day owning a winery. Pavle enlisted his extensive knowledge of wines and his culinary prowess as owner of Scottsdale’s unique and James Beard nominated farm-to-table restaurant FnB to put the dream to life at Los Milics. Los Milics wine label was begun by Pavle in 2014 and by 2018 had become the vision of Pavle and Mo as a singularly unique destination of wine, fine food and overnight accommodations unlike any winery in Arizona. Lying at the feet of, and watchful eye of Mount Bruce, commonly known as “The Biscuit” Los Milics is home to 20 acres of spectacular grape vines boasting grapes for red, white, and rose’ wines. These grapes compose many different varieties from Syrah and Tempranillo, Vranac and Multepulciano. The elevation in southern Arizona, just 45 minutes south of Tucson and three hours south of Phoenix gives the area a

unique advantage as the Arizona sun and broad temperature ranges help to ripen the grapes and maintain their acidity.
Nothing goes with fine wine like fine food and the same care that has gone into the winery has gone into the culinary experience here at Los Milics with Chef Ana Borrajo. Ana grew up in Granada Spain and ran and worked at multiple restaurants throughout Europe before eventually moving to Arizona in 2004 and opened Sapna Cafe’ on Grand Avenue that served organic, globally inspired cuisine. She later moved to Bisbee where she met her husband and opened Ana’s Seasonal Kitchen. In 2022 her friend Pavle who she had met years earlier approached her to bring her culinary genius to Los Milics Vineyard. The partnership has proven to be as magical as the cuisine, as it marries Ana’s Mediterranean and Spanish influences with the similarly styled wines of LMV. The restaurant will be called, of course, The Biscuit.
The tasting room itself has the look and feel of a modern, tony art museum. The building itself is a work of art. The weathered steel panels and expansive glass beckons you to the majestic views of the Mustang Mountains boasting indoor and outdoor seating. The building itself is 155 feet long by 55 feet wide. Every corner, different and uniquely close to every other. Tommy summed up his vision for the building by stating, “The challenge was in how to design something that was appropriate
for the setting. The unspoiled setting of the land demanded a response from us where one had to answer: “How will you be a steward of this environment and how will you want visitors to experience this site?” Once inside, if you were not looking for it you would walk right past the hidden wine cellar directly in the middle of this incredible showroom. Outside the winery, the accommodations will be comprised of nine casitas, in keeping with the overall theme, artfully designed, each with sweeping views of the Mustang Mountains. There will be seven one bedrooms and two, two bedroom casitas. A destination indeed.
Arizona is a land of many influences, cultures and interests. There are mountains and deserts, a plethora of tastes, smells and experiences. Whether you are a native or a transplant to this beautiful state there is something here for each and everyone of us. What there isn’t, or should I say wasn’t, is a destination that can fulfill so many of these all at once. Whether you are a wine and culinary connoisseur, someone looking for a unique romantic getaway, delicious food and award winning wines, or seeking a new hidden gem with spectacular views and a friendly, knowledgeable and incredibly welcoming staff, then do yourself a favor and head to Los Milics Vineyard. You won’t regret it, your taste buds, your heart, your mind and your soul will never be the same.

Passion for the West
Maggiori attended the Academie Julia in Paris as a painter. Painting as a career was hard in 2004 so he put painting into his ‘DreamBox’. He started a rock band, produced/directed music videos, animation, graphic design and photography. He came to visit America many times and fell in love with the west and cowboy culture. He met his wife in Paris producing videos, later her family introduced him to western art in Oklahoma at the National Cowboy Heritage Museum. It is then he felt the calling of the west. The landscape, clothing and lifestyle changed his life. He opened his ‘Dream Box’ in 2014 and became a western painter. Mark shows his hunger and passion for the west on his social media to his 400,000 followers.
All the major art shows across the country are fighting to get a Maggiori in their show, and collectors want one in their art collection.
Legacy Gallery will have a One Man Show for Mark Maggiori on March 11th, Saturday. All works will be sold that night by draw or by live auction. “Mark has worked hard for two years for this one man show. He hasn’t had any work for sale and the anticipation is bigger than we have ever seen in the industry. He built up a big demand for his work. It should be a major event for the art market.”

Chowder
Who doesn’t love a nice, warm soup when the weather starts to get chilly? Some may even prefer a thicker soup and perhaps the Arizona Humane Society could interest you in Chowder, the nine years young Australian Kelpie! Hiding his age extremely well with his puppy-like cuteness, this senior baby was originally brought to AHS all the way back in May of this year as a stray. Chowder underwent treatment in the shelter’s trauma hospital for a mass and was adopted but unfortunately returned in September of this year. Being back with AHS for almost two months now, this makes Chowder one of the shelter’s longest residents who continues to be hopeful his perfect forever family will show up one day. Chowder is a very loving boy who was extremely shy at first but has come out of his shell and shown himself to be a bouncy, wiggly and happy pup. Always the first to give his favorite people a smile, the best home for this pointy-eared doggo would be one where he is the only pet in the home as other four-legged friends cause him great stress. Chowder would much rather play, go on walks and cuddle with his two-legged friends!
Meet Chowder at AHS’ South Mountain location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. His adoption fee is waived to help him find his perfect forever home thanks to a generous donor, visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.
Daphne
Originally rescued as an underaged, orphaned stray in 2018 by an Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician™, Daphne has a longstanding history with the shelter. Unfortunately, she was surrendered back to AHS after her previous owner could no longer care for her.
Daphne is a perfect example of AHS’ 100% adoption guarantee, which means that pets can be brought back to the shelter any time so they can find their truly perfect forever home. Since being with AHS again, the adorable four-year-old domestic shorthair was treated for a bit of a kitty cold and an eye infection.
Calm, quiet and loving affection, Daphne is a quiet girl who would enjoy a more relaxed home. Although she is soft and social, this lovely kitty would do best in a home that lets her go at her own pace with plenty of places to cuddle up and watch the birds.
Meet Daphne at AHS’ South Mountain location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $50, visit azhumane.org/ adopt for more information.
