Remembering ... Margi Edlund By Bill Dougherty

On the heels of Hollis Volk’s triumphant success with the recent JDRF gala, it would not be fair not to mention the passing of the iconic Margi Edlund. She passed away early last fall, leaving one of the greatest legacies imaginable. A Paradise Valley resident for decades, everyone with whom I spoke seemed to have known Margi Edlund. Her effortless approach to everything for which she raised money seemed to have placed her in a small group of legendary fundraisers. Most people in the fund raising world remember Margi as the dynamic force behind the Junior League back in the mid-1960s. This was an organization that was near and dear to her heart. She recruited countless new members throughout the late 60s, into the 1970s and beyond. Margi became synonymous with building the League into what it is today. However her talents would eventually move to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She quickly became a board member and even traveled to Washington D. C. to lobby for additional funding and research into the disease. But things didn’t stop there. In 2006 Margi chaired the Promise Ball for JDRF and brought the Beach Boys to the party! That night she made more than two million dollars for the organization and secured her already cemented position as one of the most steadfast and hardworking volunteers in the Valley. Margi Edlund would be the first person to tell you that her family always came before anything. I suspect that’s why her dedication to JDRF was so incredibly impressive. She traveled the world with her husband Phil, who in his own right was iconic in business circles to say the least. Together the couple visited countless national parks and golfed around the globe. The couple were also permanent and always welcomed fixtures at the Paradise Valley Country Club. Someone once asked Margi to describe her life. She smiled and simply said “fulfilled.” She had an amazing and wonderful life and will be missed by all of us.

We’re not just fighting cancer. Now we’re outsmarting it. u Breakthrough medical approaches have revealed new

possibilities in cancer treatment—and they are available today at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA).

Our bodies fight off the viruses and bacteria that make us sick. Why not cancer? The answer—discovered only recently—is that cancer cells actually release chemical signals that tell immune cells to stop fighting. New drugs may help fight cancer by turning off those signals. Others kick-start immune responses against certain cancers or help the body generate super-charged cancer-killing immune cells. By unleashing the body’s immune system to fight cancer, immunotherapy gives many patients more options in their fight against cancer. cancercenter.com

La Dolce Vita The Season October to May People are talking about Hollis Volk. Just before the holidays, she quietly assembled a blue ribbon crowd at Montelucia. Hollis, no stranger to the long-established Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation gala, had met with success years ago when she cochaired the prestigious night. However, no one was prepared for what she effortlessly accomplished shortly before everyone started their Christmas shopping. With a crowd of roughly 400 people on a brisk evening at Montelucia, Mrs. Volk together with other merrymakers raised a whopping amount for juvenile diabetes research. Since my parents told me never to discuss money, let’s just say she raised an amount so extraordinary that other organizations have been telephoning my offices wanting to know just how it was done. Since the Volks are long established Valley residents and have earned the respect of so many, it’s no secret that Hollis’s Huntsville Southern charm combined with gracious determination paid off. Shortly before we left for Nassau, we had the opportunity to join the Volk’s and Pam Ward (another delightful lovely) for cocktails in their palatial and exquisitely decorated home. Together, we sat in their drawing room watching fire light flicker off expensive paintings and posh antique silver. We raised our glasses to their amazing success and then embarked on a tour of their magnificent home. Then we proceeded to the Paradise Valley Country Club for dinner. The club seems to have become the cultural epicenter of the community.

By Bill Dougherty

Alive and hip, everywhere we looked we saw everyone you know and adore! The club looks better than ever. We were delighted to share in the Volk’s success and that of JDRF. Many of you I’m sure would sell your personal effects to have Hollis join any upcoming committee. Yet I suspect she will retire once again to the soft gentilities of a breezy porch, iced tea, her menagerie and perhaps even a Tennessee Williams novel. Just after we returned from the Caribbean, I learned of the passing of Phoenix fashion great Kay Berry. I was first introduced to Kay in 1990 when she was the personal shopper for I. Magnin & Co. at Biltmore Fashion Park. We quickly became fast friends. I became a frequent guest in the home she shared with her husband Bob, who had been the President of Gucci. The Berrys taught me everything I know today about fashion and retail. Kay gave me books to read and showed me how to put things together and close sales. She was an amazing talent. In 1992 Macy’s, who had become our parent company, decided to build a lavish new store where Saks Fifth Avenue stands today and where Kay would eventually finish her fabulous careers. I remember Kay telling me she thought it was a horrible idea to leave our store at the corner of 24th Street and Camelback Road. Continued on page 10

La Dolce Vita – Continued from page 8 Today, Pottery Barn and the Cheese Cake Factory are located in our old store. From the beginning, strange things started to happen in the new location but that’s a whole other story. Anyway, one afternoon Kay called me from upstairs and said she had two VIP clients sitting in front of her with Anne Robbs. At the time Anne was one of the highest flyers in the social community. Kay needed a piece of Louis Vuitton from my department for one of the clients. When I opened the doors of the exclusive private room, to my shock and surprise seated with Anne where Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor! Since Zsa Zsa recently passed as well, I thought it fitting to also remember her. When they departed the store later that afternoon, the theft alarms when off! Kay forgot to take a security tag off one of Zsa Zsa’s gowns. I happened to be standing by the door when this occurred. Eva Gabor simply walked over to me and said “Darling tell za dinga-ling to turn off za ding dong.” The sisters were glamour personified. It’s hard to believe those three iconic women are all gone. When I also heard of the passing of First Lady Nancy Reagan, I was reminded of my time yet again at I. Magnin & Co. Remember, the help will always talk. When first families leave the White House, a more than 200 year old protocol dictates that you throw a thank you party for the second floor staff. Jackie Kennedy held the party only weeks after the President was assassinated. The Johnsons, Nixons, Fords, Carters, both Bush families and the Clintons did this too ... Barbara and George Bush wept openly during their party, but not the Reagans. They did nothing for the staff ... We inherited Mrs. Reagan as a huge store client when the Reagans returned to

10

Bel-Air in 1989. Mrs. Reagan was often in our Beverly Hills store and almost always in a heated argument with a manager or store manager about returns. She liked to return used hosiery and suits and dresses stained with decaffeinated coffee; favored drink of the former First Lady. Exhausted managers always gave in and Mrs. Reagan would depart with new items in hand. And you thought the Kennedy family believed rules did not apply to them? Minutes later, an associate would call us in the Phoenix store with a play by play account of her visit. I’ve been told that Mrs. Reagan was often spotted in her last years at the secluded Hotel Bel-Air. She always sat alone eating her cherished Cobb salads, decaf and chocolate chip cookies; protected by Secret Service agents standing on either side of her table. A tragic yet deserved site. Remember ladies and gentlemen you have to be nice to people and you always get back what you put out. How sad! In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That it’s not polite for a merry widow to dance the night away with married men. That a true Southern gentleman should be very afraid and wary of any upcoming casserole calls. That a back-stabbing socialite, who looks like a man in drag, just can’t seem to keep her friends. That two women who share their first names should not criticize other’s social events when they have done little or nothing in the community. That a high-profile Faustian bargain has finally come to fruition for two controversial socialites but just wait ladies, the party’s not over yet.. Now you’re all caught up for the next fifteen minutes!

INTERVIEW

A few questions for … The King of Clip – Gary Franzen Interviewed by Bill Dougherty

After a successful career in retail, Gary Franzen walked away from the hustle, bustle of Los Angeles and headed to Las Vegas. It was there he opened his tremendous men’s custom clothing store. How did you get into the rag business? I’d always had a love of men’s clothing and after a great career in the jewelry business; I decided to make the move. Who inspired you and your vision? The movie industry had a huge impact on me. I wanted to dress like Cary Grant and Fred Astaire. Why did you choose Las Vegas? Men’s fashions come and go. We offer timeless classic clothing. The majority of the men for whom I started designing lived in Los Angeles, Reno, Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas. When I realized the lifestyle we could have in Las Vegas, I said to my wife, “Let’s go!”

28

What region of the country do you focus on? I only sell in the West and Southwest. My operation is very small, so we are constantly busy. Who’s dressing these days? Surprisingly it’s successful millennials. Tight flat front slacks, crisp dress shirts, crazy socks and colored saddle lace up shoes. It’s one of the biggest men’s trends we’ve seen since The Beatles arrived in 1964 and changed almost everything. Is custom clothing the wave of the future for the well to do? We have a large inventory and a small overhead. Anyone can get custom made clothing. It’s not as untouchable as most think. We offer made-to-order men’s suits, formal wear, dress shirts and bespoke suits, which are bench-made labor-intensive custom clothing. This is a rarity in our region and seems to be quickly moving overseas.

Do you sell more suits or sport coats? We are making more sport coats than ever before. Although suits are still our bread and butter, sport coats are huge. Who doesn’t like a sport coat, combined with a crisp white dress shirt and a great pair of jeans? What your next big fix? Ironically, I just appeared on ABC News Nightline in late October. TRENDS IN CRUISING

Sailing on Holland America’s

MS Oosterdam

For the last decade, 3 large ship cruise lines have dominated the top spot. Disney, Celebrity and Holland America have far out ranked the other various cruise ship lines. Since cruising shot to fame following the triumphant success of television’s The Love Boat in the 1970s, cruising has changed greatly. Today most lines are divided into large, medium and small ships. Each offers certain nuisances, perks and amenities in different categories.

40

Holland American has a reputation for catering to mature successful travelers that expect the finer things but also expect everything else that goes along with large cruise ships. Smaller ships do have their benefits, however they often don’t offer what larger ships do. You won’t find water slides hanging off the side of these ships, zip lines or bumper cars on deck. But what you will find are beautifully designed vessels that cut effortlessly through the roughest

waters with a quite understated elegance not found in larger ships today. This is precisely why HAL has one of the largest industry returns in its cruisers, dubbed the Mariner’s Society. Dinning The Oosterdam offers various stages of seating and dining options. Gone are the days of tuxedos and ball gowns, replaced by smart casual attire; something the majority

of the passengers seem perfectly comfortable with. There are two seating’s for nightly dinning in the Vista Dining Room as well as walk-in seating available. The ship is home to three upscale restaurants, which require a nominal and well worth it fee. They include, Pinnacle Grille, Canaletto and Le Cirque. The ship has an impressive Lido buffet which operates virtually 24 hours a day, not to mention 24 hour room service. All food choices and categories are excellent and in keeping with the finest Holland America standards. Public Rooms and Cocktail Lounges and Shopping and Excursions The Oosterdam like so many other HAL ships offers a vast amount of bars, cocktail lounges, libraries, ballrooms and theaters. HAL is internationally recognized for its on-board entertainment, floor shows, dancing and singalong fun. This ships offers all that and much more. The cruise director together with the HAL onboard shopping staff are excellent resources for just about any activities on or off the ship. The Green House Spa World famous Steiner showcases its Elemis brands throughout the vast spa. We selected facials, manicures/pedicures and massages. Everything was tremendous and the staff is exceptionally trained in the latest techniques. It’s also a great opportunity to load up on Steiner products, especially

because the ship offers many buy 2 get 1 free specials on products and procedures. Cruising the Southern Caribbean Our voyage took us first to Half Moon Cay, a private HAL island, greatly changed from our first call there in 2003 but still majestic and beautiful. Our next stops included the Dominican Republic and Grand Turks, which can easily be skipped. Our next ports of call included what is affectingly known as the ABC’s of the southern itineraries; Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. They are pretty and spotless islands, but vastly different from the far greener and lusher northern and eastern Caribbean locations. Jewelry is still one of the mainstays of the entire Caribbean, but be careful! Since the price of gold has sky-

rocketed there are few bargains to be had. Although jewels are priced less than those in the US, by the time you factor in time and the cost of travel to get to these islands; it’s not the bargain it was for decades. In all, Holland America is still one of the few gold standards in large cruise line sailing. Its mission to retain classic, elegant and understated cruising still holds true today. Although the MS. Oosterdam will go into dry dock later this season to be refurbished, it seems to need little updating. We did speak with numerous people who felt the ship needed improvements, but in the end there was little to complain about. That’s why Holland America never fell out of the top 5.

The Last Playboy by Shawn Levy Reviewed by Bill Dougherty Long before Cher, Madonna and Sade; there was one man and one name that was better known than the three mentioned celebrities put together. Rubi! This one word described Dominican Republic playboy Porfirio Rubirosa. He was a man loved in seven languages and he spoke five with fluency. Porfirio Rubirosa was James Bond before the Ian Fleming character came to life on the silver screen in the early 1960s. A Dominican Republic diplomat serving in the often barbaric Trujillo regime, Rubi traveled the world in spy-like fashion. He was an accomplished polo player, pilot, hunter and race car driver; who for four decades made the fashionable New York-Palm Beach-Paris-Monte Carlo circuit with ease and tremendous bravado. If anyone dared to live the high life, Rubi did just that! He married two of the wealthiest women in the world and became a part-time lover to many beautiful Hollywood starlets and a dictator’s wife. Women fantasized about him and men envied him. Rubi was a far less celluloid creation than Playboy’s Hugh Hefner, long before Mr. Hefner thought of the idea. Rubi was the real deal! Shawn Levy has done a tremendous job piecing together this charismatic man from his humble beginnings to his opulent life and questionable and controversial demise in 1965. If you’ve ever dreamed of being a high flyer or at least wanted to pretend for a while, this book is for you!

Party of the Century by Deborah Davis Reviewed by Bill Dougherty 1966 was a big year for big hair, big jewelry, big best-selling books and big parties. The Vietnam War had not reached its apocalyptic anti-war throws. The country, if you were white and middle class, was a great place to live. An international bestseller titled In Cold Blood had found its way into almost every book case of the world. At the time, its author Truman Capote was still fresh off his success with the light and airy novel, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But In Cold Blood is entirely different. The meticulously written piece centers on two misinformed cons that have brutally murdered a Kansas family in search of the family’s vast but bank-protected fortune. Flamboyant and almost off the rails by this literary zenith, Truman Capote decides to throw a party at the Plaza Hotel in New York to celebrate his remarkable success. He chooses recently widowed Kay Graham of Washington Post fame to lift her spirits as the ball’s honoree. Mr. Capote concocts a dazzling and vindictive guest list. The party is wildly successful beyond even its sharpest or uninvited critic’s imagination. The evening makes headlines and news programs across the globe. Deborah Davis leaves no stone unturned in this playful masterpiece. It’s so well written that at many points along the way to the big night, you actually feel as though you’re in the room with Mr. Capote and his swans. If you‘ve ever attended a great party then you need to read this book!

First Women by Kate Andersen Brower Reviewed by Bill Dougherty A fitting book for an agonizing election year. First Women proves an interesting and extremely well documented profile of First Ladies of the United States. The book begins with the departure of Mamie Eisenhower from the White House and concludes shortly before Michelle Obama’s exit. Kate Andersen Brower is no stranger to Washington nor the White House and her countless interviews and tedious research make for a fascinating history lesson. If you’re interested in gossip and tantalizing tales of First Ladies past and present than this book is the perfect read. It is an exceptional cocktail party polo tool. Lady Bird Johnson, Betty Ford and Barbara Bush come off the best in the book. Jackie Kennedy and Pat Nixon are liked but the staff finds them aloof and often distant. Rosalynn Carter runs hot and cold with everyone and removes centuries old protocol during fierce economic times. Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton were often feared by all involved. A surprise to no one, Laura Bush is sometimes moody with the staff and continues to secretly smoke in the residence long after she has told the press she has quit. Something President Obama is guilty of as well. Michelle Obama likes her position the least. The above mentioned women were raised in affluence and used to limousines, security details and servants. The Obamas were not prepared for their new life and found it hard to adapt while raising two small children. These are just small antidotes in an excellent and very well written book. Whether you like politics or not, First Ladies represent our county and often in a non-partisan way. For four years and beyond they are the face of our country and the administration to which they are attached. Do not miss this!
