Pat McMahon is an award-winning icon in the Valley. Pat has shaped fun and happy unforgettable memories in the minds of thousands of children while growing up watching and attending the longest running kids show in television history, The Wallace and Ladmo Show (between the years of 1954 -1989). McMahon joined the show in 1960, creating and playing many controversial characters like the most well-known spoiled kid Gerald, Boffo the clown, who hated kids, Aunt Maude the hip granny, and even donned a wig and false bushy eye brows to become a lead rock and roll guitarist named Hub Kapp and the Wheels, recording several singles and appearing on the Steve Allen & Joey Bishop Shows. The show’s humor was often critical and topical, actually a pioneer to Saturday Night Live!
He is married to Duffy McMahon Ph.D. for over 30 years. Duffy has her own presence in broadcasting where she talks about love, life and sexuality, which she believes combine as a total human experience. The most anticipated luncheon of the entire social season took place in early December. The Board of Visitors, the oldest charity in our state, managed yet again to sell out to capacity. It’s no secret that the much-adored Prue Brito and Amy Butler-Prechel did a splendid job chairing the monumental afternoon and as always, it was a smashing success.

What did you do before you opened To Be Continued? I owned a recruiting business called Think Hire, Inc. We focused on sourcing software engineers and executives in the high-tech industry.
To whom do you attribute your fashion sense? I have had a very strong sense of what I wanted to wear for as long as I can remember. Scouring fashion magazines and bargain shopping with my Mother were my childhood hobbies. Sitting back and studying the fashionable women of Paris and NYC were my college hobbies. So, I think my fashion sense is mostly innate but enhanced by observing the people and places which made an impression around me.
How did you come up with the concept for you store? I love high fashion and finding bargains. I wanted to make bargain hunting for high fashion a luxurious experience; offering services, product and an atmosphere offered by the most haute brands in the world.
What fashion accessory do you never leave the house without? My rings! I wear one on almost every finger and each one has a story, history and meaning. They remind me of people and places I love. They make me feel happy and I never leave the house without them.
Do you have plans for additional stores? Yes, we will be opening our first showroom in Paris, France this February. We are always looking at expanding domestically and may have some news on our next location very soon. Stay tuned! What are the hottest fashion trends you see? The eighties are back for sure. Shopping and selling what “was previously loved” is a huge trend right now; that I see only getting more fashionable and trendy. Sustainable practices are fashionable. What is your best-selling luxury item? Handbags ... Specifically, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes handbags. Where do you see your business in 5 years? I see us expanding in the domestic market with more brick and mortar boutiques. Expanding to Europe in some capacity is always part of our thought process. We are excited to be opening a showroom in Paris next month. We think it may be the first with more to come.

How are you celebrating PANDA’s 20th anniversary? We will celebrate at our “Children Helping Children” Fashion Show and Luncheon on March 30, with 59 child models, including current and past patients of the Steele Children’s Research Center.
What projects are you funding in 2019? The 2019 research project brings us back to our roots as PANDAs - funding childhood cancer research. The PANDA Childhood Cancer Inflammation Project will look at young kids undergoing bone marrow transplants, and research ways in which their diet and gut health impact their treatment.
Why does the Phoenix community so generously supporta Tucson facility? The Steele Children’s Research Center is the only academic research center in the state of Arizona, and its impact is far reaching. Of the 60,000 patient visits per year, a large percentage are children from the Phoenix area
What is your most significant moment in your time in PANDA? There isn’t just one. It’s each time a patient model walks down the runway and I feel the strength they have battling their illness. To see the smiles on their faces warms my heart.
Where do you see PANDA in 20 years? During our first 20 years, seed money from PANDA has been the catalyst for nearly $100 million in grants for the Steele Children’s Research Center. There is more to come!

Desert Foundation Auxiliary In 1963 few visionary women in the Valley saw the need for an event in the Scottsdale area which would present young women to their friends while raising funds for deserving charities. The first Desert Ball, chaired by Kax Herberger, was held in December 1966. The Desert Ball was held at the Safari Resort for the first 10 years before moving to the Camelback Inn, then to the newly built Registry Resort where it stayed for 10 years. When the Phoenician Resort opened in 1988 the Desert Ball moved there and has remained there for 30 years.

Over the last 53 years, the Desert Foundation Auxiliary continued to present young women from the city of Scottsdale and towns of Paradise Valley and Carefree. Attendance at the balls grew as did the amount raised for charity. Throughout the years however, DFA’s unwavering commitment to tradition and celebrating family and friends has remained steadfast.

A sea of beautiful young ladies in white ball gowns was presented to society just before Christmas at the Phoenician Resort. The festivities were put into high gear this time by chair Gina Forster and her equally lovely co-chair Wendy Dewane respectfully. This is truly one of the most elegant evenings in the cold winter season. The decor committee made sure every final detail was taken care of and if they didn’t, they had the remarkable Dennis Thompson of White House Design Studio to lend his many talents. Everyone that entered the ballroom swooned! In a room full of beautiful young ladies, we have to point out that Wendy Dewane looked smashing in a navy velvet gown and was clearly the Bell of the Ball. A simply magnificent evening.

SYMPHONY BALL While merrymakers throughout the world were ringing in the new year, here in Phoenix an opulent crowd decided to do the very same thing but at the Symphony Ball. Famed socialite Jeanne Herberger, who came up with the concept for a New Year’s Eve ball more than a decade ago, saw her dreams realized yet again. While the cherished evening took a hiatus for a while, it returned in 2018 and proved once more that it could and would be a smashing success. The Arizona Biltmore, which had hosted the ball for decades, had the pleasure of showcasing the grand event again. This time Sharon and Oliver Harper chaired the evening with Lucia Renshaw and Bruce Covill as co-chairs. Top style honors went to Wan Kim and Doris Ong who simply mesmerized the crowd and showed the way to celebrate 2019.

Actually, it’s not really a secret and has been around for years. But with the exploding “trendy” dining scene, this fantastic spot has remained a hit for its consistently classic good food and its attention to detail. Former owner Elias Pantazopoulos “Louie” and current owner Maria Tobras are still bringing this old school favorite spot to life every single day. The food is delicious, and the service is excellent. It has such a cozy feel and you are treated like family from the moment you sit down.
There is an amazing salad bar which you don’t find at many places anymore. It begins with ice cold salad plates and homemade salad dressings. Such a treat with which to begin before your entree arrives. It is hard for me to recommend what to choose as their menu is quite extensive. Everything from escargot and shrimp cocktail (which was some of the biggest, freshest shrimp in town) to their famous prime rib to filet mignon. Also, not to be missed are the excellent lamb chops, seafood and even pasta dishes. Additionally they have some classic dishes such as beef Wellington and liver and onions. For dessert their mud pie is outstanding which is also a dessert you don’t find on many menus today. Please come visit Feeney’s soon, as you will not be disappointed. You will find that the quality of the food, and the genuine warmth of this family are what will keep you coming back again and again. This is what’s missing these days in a lot of restaurants. Mr. S, My Life with Frank Sinatra by George Jacobs In 2003 the 15-year valet to Frank Sinatra wrote a tell-all book about his former employer and their non-stop ring-a-ding-ding lifestyle they shared together from 1953 to his dismissal in 1968. Mr. Jacobs is fired for dancing with Mr. Sinatra’s third ex-wife, Mia Farrow, at the famed Daisy nightclub. The book explores Frank Sinatra’s errand boy relationship with Ava Gardner (the one that got away.) We learn that much of what has been said about mob boss Sam Giancana, JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and the Cal-Neva Lodge are all probably true. Platinum Starlet, scratch golfer Jeanne Carmen was Marilyn Monroe’s best friend. She is terminally ill during the production of this book, and helps Mr. Jacobs spill the beans on everyone associated with Frank Sinatra. Ms. Carmen herself claims she was run out-of-town by the Kennedys after the untimely death of her best friend in 1962. What most people who followed Frank Sinatra don’t realize is that George Jacobs secretly remained close with Frank’s mother, Dolly Sinatra, who perished in his Lear Jet in a 1978 accident and Nancy Sinatra Sr. Nancy was the ex-wife, mother of their 3 children and best friend of the icon. He is terrified of both his mother and ex-wife and craves their total approval in everything he does. For the next two decades, the mother and ex daughter-in-law feed Mr. Jacobs all kinds of ongoing family scandal in the duel Sinatra households of Palm Springs and Beverly Hills. For some reason when this book was released, it didn’t become a best seller. After you read it you wonder why. No other person in Mr. Sinatra’s life was closer to the iconic crooner than George Jacobs and none has more to say. Enough said.

Countless investors including Walgreens, Safeway, Henry Kissinger, Betsy DeVos, James Mattis and George Schultz were all mesmerized by Ms. Holmes. Channeling her idol Steve Jobs, Elizabeth Holmes began to duplicate his all-black appearance and turtlenecks and even lowered her near falsetto voice to baritone levels as she convinced luminaries to invest hundreds of m illions in her fake machine. Vincent Bugliosi stated in his best-selling piece Helter Skelter that “This book will scare the hell out of you.” It’s a crying shame the late prosecution attorney didn’t live long enough to read Bad Blood. Everyone needs to read this book. It’s simply unbelievable.
