The Travel Mom: Emily Kaufman How did you get your start? I started my career as a professional in early childhood education; teaching parenting classes, mommy and me and preschool. I met a producer of the local news at the park playing with our kids and he suggested I come on his show to share some parenting pointers. I began appearing as “The Professional Mom” on local and national shows. What led from The Professional Mom to The Travel Mom? Once I started to appear frequently on television, a destination contacted me and invited me to visit. They were hoping I would go on TV and talk about how great it was to other moms. That’s where the idea of “The Travel Mom” was born. The Travel Mom started long before social media, how did you make it work? I have never considered myself a blogger or influencer. In fact, none of those mediums existed when I first started. I built my brand the old-fashioned way by sending VHS tapes of past performances to television shows asking if they would have me on.

Supreme Glamour by Mary Wilson In 1986, Mary Wilson would pin her memories of being one of the three founding members of The Supremes. The book, Dream Girl, would become the biggest bestselling book written about Rock & Roll. More than three decades later; she has returned with a lavish coffee table book, Supreme Glamour. The book is dedicated to the heart-stopping glamour that would make The Supremes the most fashionable music group in history. Ms. Wilson begins the book with the rags to riches success of founding members: Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and herself; who all meet in the Brewster Housing projects of Detroit. The group is slow to chart in the early 1960s but always beautifully dressed, appointed and charmed by Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr; something other Motown acts find off-putting. In

the end, Mr. Gordy is correct and The Supremes prove triumphant. They chart 12 number one hits, a fete only shared by The Beatles. Mesmerizing from the start; and overshadowed by keen oversize wigs, which become their trademark, the group sets off a national obsession with hair pieces. The wigs and cocktail dresses are quickly followed by flowing chiffon gowns. The country is spellbound by their beauty, grace and style. In late 1966, designers Michael Travis and business partner Bob Mackie embark on a succession of beaded gowns for the Supremes which escalate the group’s fashion status even further. By mid-1967; Florence Ballard has departed the act, creating a highly publicized tabloid frenzy. Motown orders more and more elaborate costumes for the group now called, “Diana Ross & The Supremes.” Cindy Birdsong replaces Ms. Ballard for the 3 remaining years they are together, and gowns become more over-the-top with each appearance. Anyone who attends charity balls or likes fashion, needs this book. Bravo!

Originally the gala was the brainchild of socialite Sarah Suggs and her tribute to Irving Berlin and the music he created at the Arizona Biltmore almost a century ago. At the time many in our community had no idea the world-famous composer had written most of his holiday tunes at the magnificent resort. Since then, the gala has become a festive favorite of many who support Ryan House and their countless efforts to aid in lifelimiting and end â&#x20AC;&#x201C;of- life journeys for children. This year the opulent affair was chaired by Pepper Kincaid-Sizer and Jennifer Whitesides. They both did a spectacular job!

Chrissy and Mitch Sayare threw open their swanky Paradise Valley estate to host the ACI VIP party the night before the lunch. Major donors were there for a private meet and greet with ACI featured speaker Tonne Goodman and her collaborator Ivan Shaw. At the luncheon the next day, Tonne did not disappoint as she regaled the audience with colorful stories from her numerous years in the fashion industry (she is currently a features editor at Vogue and just released her book â&#x20AC;&#x153;Point of Viewâ&#x20AC;?). Jennifer Carmer did a splendid job chairing the sold-out event, held at the Phoenix Art Museum and sponsored by TBC. Attendees came decked in their fashion finest so the people watching was phenomenal!

A Grand Tradition

What year did DFA start and where was it held? Desert Foundation Auxiliary was founded in January 1965 when a group of prominent Scottsdale residents decided that Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Carefree should have their own Debutante Ball, separate from the city of Phoenix. These women included Mrs. Stillman, Mrs. Goldwater, Mrs. Herberger and Mrs. Thorne; as well as many other prestigious members of the growing Scottsdale community. The first Debutante Ball was held on December 29, 1966, at the Safari Hotel in Scottsdale. Has the organization always benifited a charity? Yes! Our founders saw the need to support the local community of Scottsdale and the surrounding communities; and they wanted to invest in that growth by helping small, emerging charities, who might not exist today without the financial seed money granted

What makes your Debutante Ball stand apart from others? The primary item that sets us apart from other balls is that our Ball is held during the holiday season after our Debutantes’ first semester of college, rather than in the spring of their senior year. In addition; the Desert Ball is the only Debutante Ball where each Debutante hosts their own table, which includes their escort and friends, as well as there being a separate table for their parents and family friends. Since we limit the number of Debutantes to 25, we are able to create an extremely elegant and intimate event, at which time-honored traditions established in 1966 are still followed to this day.

Our Mother-Daughter Tea held in May at one of our members’ homes is the first opportunity for our DFA Debutantes to be formally introduced to our membership and to one another. Prior to the event, Active and Associate members come together to prepare hand-made tea sandwiches and desserts, using recipes that have been handed down from our founding members and

Merrymakers gathered at the Arizona Biltmore yet again this year. Each season is officially closed out with the Phoenix Symphony Ball. PANDA is Hitting it Out of the Park for Kids The Phoenix Women’s Board of the Steele Children’s Research Center, known as PANDA, is hosting the “Children Helping Children” Fashion Show and Luncheon on March 28, 2020 at the Phoenician. Event chairs Colleen Chester, Sarah Frey, Courtney Gaintner and Kelly Vasbinder; along with PANDA President Tammy Ryan; shared their plans for the 2020 event.

What projects are you funding in 2020? Tammy Ryan: For two decades, PANDA has collaborated with the Steele Children’s Research Center to fund a critical need. In 2020, PANDA is supporting Steele’s overall commitment to pediatric medical research to find solutions to childhood disorders and diseases.

What inspired this focus on research? Colleen Chester: Our inspiration comes from Dr. Fayez Ghishan’s quote, “If I spend an hour with one child, I help one child. If I spend one hour in the lab, I help 1,000 children.” Our 2020 project is focusing on three research areas: autoimmune research, Childhood Postinfectious Autoimmune Encephalopathy (CPAE), and genome sequencing.

Why does your Phoenix Board support a research center in Tucson? Sarah Frey: PANDA was founded to support medical research at the Steele Children’s Research Center, the only academic pediatric research center in the state of Arizona. Seed money from PANDA has been the catalyst for more than $100 million in grants to fund pediatric medical research. This research benefits children throughout the state and the world.

What is the event theme this year? Kelly Vasbinder: We selected the theme “Field of Dreams” for PANDA’s 2020 event because baseball and children’s health have a lot of similarities, especially in that things can change in an instant. They both also need a lot of hope and require hard work. Steele fights to find answers, so we can again change a family’s life in an instant, but this time; for the better.

What does the theme mean to you? Courtney Gaintner: I grew up in Iowa, just down the road where the movie Field of Dreams was filmed. The line from the film “if you build it, they will come” perfectly describes the Steele Children’s Research Center. Steele has helped countless children and we are so lucky to have it in our backyard. PANDA could not be more proud to have helped build this world-renowned research center.

It has Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flairs and serves up wood fired contemporary American fare in a striking and elegant space. We started with the little gem salad with egg, breadcrumbs and anchovy vinaigrette followed by the Di Stefano burrata with prosciutto, arugula pesto, and grilled country bread. It was quite hard to choose an appetizer as they have a few different hummus options, assorted dips and spreads, and many other unique small plates.

For entrees we had the 18-ounce prime ribeye which our server explained to us had just been added to the menu that evening and it was a hit! The steak was wood fired to perfection and the flavor robust. We also had the pan roasted diver scallops that were moist, plump and delicious! For dessert donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss the olive oil pound cake, a moist and unique item that is not found often enough on most restaurant menus. My mom used to make the BEST pound cake so I am a bit partial to that one, of course, but nice to even see it for a change on a menu while dining out. They also have wood fired pizzas, and many other items from the wood grill including the FLINT burger, grilled lamb chops, pork chops, filet mignon and a few other seafood options. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and encourage you to come and dine here at FLINT BY Baltaire.

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown In 1936 nine Americans set off for the Olympic Games which are scheduled to be held in Hitlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Capitol city of Berlin. The book traces the roots of these fine American boys and their Depression era dreams of going to the Olympics. They are the underdog in the United States and largely ignored by the media in the sleepy little towns they hail from in the state of Washington. However their luck, determination and drive quickly turns the tables on their elite East Coast competitors. The very tall and very handsome young gentlemen arrive in a Disney-like Berlin along with fellow Americans Jesse Owens and Louis Zamperini, who both become famous in their own right at the games that summer. Berlin is surreal and fastidious. The slums are gone, so are the homeless and city workers are reuniformed. There is no place like it in the world in all of 1936. An extended courtesy is granted to the globe from a city that will soon capture the continent. Swastikas hang everywhere and there are no signs of anti-Semite behavior. The Hindenburg makes low passes throughout the games to showcase German air advances to the world. Famed photographer Leni Riefenstahl captures every moment of the games with state-ofthe art cameras. The city and the games themselves almost resembles a movie set. We wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t spoil anymore of the nuances in this great read. Through a collection of journals and vivid memories you are literally transformed into the dusty and hungry Great Depression only to be lifted into a wonderment German facade for the entire world to see. This book is truly the American Dream!

The Boy Who Followed His Father into Auschwitz by Jeremy Dronfield The Kleinmann family are simple and ordinary people living a quiet life in their native Vienna, Austria. Father Gustav owns and works as a successful furniture upholsterer. His wife Tini tends to their 4 children and keeps house in the modest but lovely apartment. They are a family thankful and idealistic about the new Third Reich and its plans for a better Europe. But the Anschluss of Austria quickly dims the hope of the Kleinmann family and all around them. Gustav and his son Fritz are some of the first arrested and the family business is seized by the Nazis. The father and son are deported and shipped off to Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. There the two endue some of the most agonizing and horrific conditions imaginable. Then word spreads through the camp that Gustav will soon be transferred to Auschwitz, an almost immediate death sentence. Fritz is now faced with a decision to leave his father to die alone or join him in the most notorious concentration camp in the history of mankind. Jeremy Dronfield spent more than half a decade studying the meticulous archive of the diary of Gustav Kleinmann. Hidden within the family for more than 5 decades, Mr. Dronfield was finally able to persuade the family to turn over the diary along with secret photographs and notes kept throughout the father and son journey. Many books continue to emerge fron the Holocaust. This read is exceptional!
