Remembering ... Jazelle Ghiz By Bill Dougherty
Just as the season was coming to a close, we learned of the tragic death of 1992 Trendsetter Jazelle Ghiz. She passed away in her sleep after recovering from a recent surgery at her home in Laguna Beach. Of more than 350 Trendsetters Jazelle will always stand out as one of the most flamboyant, kind and loving ladies that make up the threedecades-old honor. When I was first introduced to Jazelle in 1990, I felt she was b etter suited for the silver screen than that of the grind of fundraising. She was so extraordinarily beautiful and glamourous that she took your breath away! Her intoxicating personality, sultry voice and style could silence a room upon her entrance and I watched it happen many times. The native Phoenician was an amazing woman who did unfathomable amounts of charity work and managed to attach her name to just about every organization in the Valley. The Phoenix Heart Ball, Trends Charitable Fund, Make A Wish, Cancer Ball, Phoenix Symphony Ball, Chrysalis and Childhelp were all organizations that were near and dear to her heart for many years. Jazelle was often that last man standing at many of these events. She helped remove and distribute centerpieces, swept floors, drove merrymakers home from galas and quietly purchased tickets to events for volunteers who could not afford them. Jazelle was a rarity. She always attributed her success to her parents and the swimming pool empire they built from nothing. She was never afraid to tackle anything and was completely unaffected. An ASID interior designer, she was gifted with a special verve and flair. Everything she touched she turned to gold. Whenever you were with Jazelle it was a nonstop and jet-set party, filled with beautiful people from around the world. Many times you returned home from one of her parties or galas as the sun was coming up. It was truly like the film La Dolce Vita to be in her presence. After retiring from the social world, Jazelle, along with her husband of 21 years, Ellzey Martin moved to Laguna Beach. She always told me that one day she would have a house by the sea. I was delighted when they made the move. Yet Jazelle returned constantly to support friends and family through various charity luncheons and balls. She never forgot her roots. Her passing has left us devastated, but we must remember God just inherited one of the greatest angels he will ever get!

La Dolce Vita The Season October to May By now you’ve probably heard the Go Red for Women luncheon held at the Arizona Biltmore was a smashing success! For the second year in a row, this publication was invited to be an active supporter and participant. We were delighted to have the chance again. Since I missed the bash last year, I decided to host a table of some of the most sought after socialites in the community. Jan Lewis, Marcie Amory, Cathy Bentley, Trisha Anthony, Betty McRae, Barbara Dunlap, Judy Shannon and Robyn DeBell all sat and chatted with each other along with yours truly and my lovely wife Beth. It was simply brilliant to have all these fine and much-accomplished ladies at one table. They’ve also known each other for decades. Talk about power table! The afternoon proved to be extremely informative as it focused on women’s health issues regarding heart disease and stroke. Both often go undetected resulting in catastrophic illness and death. I cringed when they started a live ask after lunch but then again I always do, even at the event I jointly share with the Trends Charitable Fund. Jan Lewis was quick to tell everyone that that’s why we were there to make our community a far better place. I still cringed. Anyway it was a smashing success and I know Linda Hunt and the rest of the lovely women that made the afternoon happen must have been very pleased. I’ll let you know who makes my guest

With all the chatter surrounding our Fabulous Phoenician and Trendsetters this year, a lot of people have been asking me at cocktail parties what ever happened to the Best Dressed list? Funny they should mention it. Many long time Phoenicians remember when Trends dubbed 10 ladies Fashionable Phoenicians in 1985 then later Fashionalities. When it was decided in 2001 to change the honor to Trendsetter, we started a best dressed list. Many women, along with many of the Valley’s finest dressed gentleman, were invited to participate and there was a lot of crossover from the previous award ... Many recipients were photographed and honored at luncheons for almost a decade. However this year we have taken the Vanity Fair approach with the element of surprise. The revitalized Best Dressed in Phoenix list will appear from now on in each June issue at the close of the season. We hope you enjoy the changes we’ve made. As we close the social season, we want to first thank all of you who make such a difference in our community. There are so many events now that it’s hard to stay on top of everything. All the Trends reporters do magnificent jobs covering your events. Thank you for being so kind to all of them. We always like to stop and make social observations at the end of the season. Here are my thoughts. Brunch at El Chorro now reminds me of the Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills on a Sunday afternoon. Everyone goes there to be seen and the food is fantastic. In 20 minutes you’ll see everyone who matters. Hello, how are you, kiss, kiss. You get the picture? It’s like lunching at Vincent’s Bistro: great French food and great people-watching too. People used to invite me to that dreadful restaurant at the old Ritz-Carlton. The food was horrific, but the people-watching was divine. They’re all over at Vincent’s now and the hotel is finally moving to Paradise Valley. So my predictions for the next big wave are Mora on 7th Street. I think the menu’s a little too clever but boy are the diners beautiful and beautifully dressed. The cocktail lounge at Mountain Shadows is hip, but a lot of people do not even know it’s there. They have a great mod happy hour complete with a carousel Malm fireplace, the best cheese board I’ve ever seen and to-die-for hamburgers! The groovy resort was made for the likes of Susan and Richard Doria, Suzanne and Michael
Johnson and Alison King who are all iconic in all things modern and edgy. Rounding out the see-and-be-seen list is the French Grocery on 7th Avenue. There’s nothing like it in Phoenix and the champagne, baguettes and pastries will blow you away. But by this time, you’ve run into half of Phoenix so you pass on the breads and desserts; choosing to guzzle the French champagne instead. Don’t forget to stop by Godzooks for soup and enchiladas too. Now you’re all caught up on everything hip and happening and you didn’t even have to go to San Diego for the summer. Who else would tell you all these things? In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That you need to be very cautious of a hot rolled blonde who talks out of both sides of her mouth. That two previous friends need to bury the hatchet because the social swim is sick and tired of listening to both of you bash the other. That a very private philanthropist’s generosity will forever change the fund-raising landscape very soon. Just wait and see. That the cruel behavior of a socialite toward wait staff at events, is about to get Visine drops tossed into her food next season because she’s so detested at every resort. That an in-your-face duo that showcases themselves to be couple number one at galas and on social media, are anything but. Now you’re all caught up until next season.

What person or people do you admire in the social community? I truly admire 2 women. They are Lorraine Tallman and Bridget Costello. They suffered unimaginable losses; Lorraine, her daughter Amanda and Bridget, her son Connor. They started charities to help other families suffering the same fate. What would be your dream event to work on or maybe chair? I am drawn to children’s charities. The Make A Wish Foundation Event pulled on my heart strings. What are your favorite Valley restaurants? What person or people do you admire in the social community? I admire Shan Francis for her kindness and compassion, while being such an organized and competent volunteer. What would be your dream event to work on or maybe chair? At this point I do not have a dream event to chair. My wish now, is to be the most doting grandmother I can be. Fresh Start Women’s Foundation How and when was your charity formed? Twenty-five years ago; two sisters, Pat Petznick and Beverly Stewart, recognized the need for programs and services for women who were looking to join or rejoin the workforce to support themselves and their families. At that time, Arizona ranked the fifth highest in the nation for what was then termed “displaced homemakers” and existing programs from 18 organizations statewide had only the capacity to serve 11 percent of the women desiring assistance. Through the Governor’s Office and the Arizona Coalition of Displaced Homemakers the only program of its kind in existence was developed to offer monthly makeovers to women. In addition to hair, makeup and manicures; they enjoy motivational, educational and inspiring presentations from guest speakers. Briefly describe the mission of your organization. Fresh Start provides education, resources and support for women to positively transform their lives and strengthen the community.
What is the most significant impact that your organization makes in the community? Fresh Start knows that when a woman believes in herself and is able to see a vision for her future, she can accomplish anything to which she sets her mind. Empowering women to be self-sufficient and confident has a ripple effect felt by each client’s family, friends and community; creating a positive generational impact. What is the main thing that sets you apart from other non-profits? Fresh Start is a unique organization that takes a holistic approach to addressing the needs of a diverse community of 5,000 women each year and allows them to access a myriad of career, education and life skills programs, as well as services such as mentoring, family law support and social work, all under one roof. Tell us something no one knows about your charity. Clients who select a free outfit or members of the public who shop at our in-house clothing resource and thrift boutique, Treasures Within, may occasionally find a pair of Louboutins or other designer finds. How do volunteers play a role in your organization? Volunteers are the lifeblood of Fresh Start. More than 400 active volunteers help facilitate workshops, mentor, serve as career coaches or help with fundraising events. Please describe the specific program for which TCF is providing funding? The recent grant helps support a master’s level social worker at Fresh Start. Social workers provide women with personalized, one-on-one support as they make changes in their lives. They work with them to prioritize current needs, find community resources and help them identify growth opportunities, set goals and create action plans. StreetLightUSA Mission/Purpose: Transition adolescent girls from Trauma to Triumph through residential care and comprehensive services for health and well-being, education, life skills, career preparation and assistance with legal needs. Mission is implemented by a two-tier approach – Crisis Intervention and Stabilization. Governance: Established in 2009, StreetLightUSA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The CEO /President heads the organization and is supported in day-to-day operations by the Director of Operations and a professional team of 50 full, part-time and contracted residential and administrative staff. Funding: StreetLightUSA is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit agency in good standing. This organization is funded by individual donors, corporations/ businesses, faithbased communities, civic groups, local government agency placement contracts and private/public/foundation grants.
Volunteers: Community volunteers provide an array of services which include life-skills education, tutoring, mentorship, campus beautification projects, support services and product drives. Population Served: Girls 11-17 years of age who are the victims of child sex trafficking, sexual abuse and those who are identified as having a high risk of becoming victimized. Placement/Referral source: Clients are referred by Arizona governmental agencies charged with protecting minors, other nonprofit agencies, first responders and private placement from Arizona and across the United States. Service/Programming: Direct Care Services include, but are not limited to: trauma informed care and therapies; wellness, art therapy; individual and group counseling, mentoring; continued education, GED and tutoring; survivor-led group counseling; life skills; structured recreational activities, victim rights and advocacy services. Family Promise – Greater Phoenix How and when was your charity formed? Founded in 1998, the Family Promise emergency shelter program welcomes primarily first time homeless families and their pets; offering them a hand-up, before they spiral into the endless cycle of poverty and chronic homelessness. Briefly describe the mission of your organization. Children are more vulnerable to the negative affects of homelessness, with 50% of homeless school age children experiencing depression and anxiety. Located in south Scottsdale, Family Promise offers a holistic approach to services, providing the tools necessary for families to continue their journey to independence and self-sufficiency. What is the most significant impact that your organization makes in the community? In addition to emergency shelter, Family Promise provides case management, cash flow training, job and life skills coaching, parenting classes, academic and childcare referrals plus help with employment and housing.
What is the main thing that sets you apart from other non-profits? There are numerous shelters that provide assistance but only Family Promise allows and welcomes pets to accompany those we serve. It can be exrtremely stressful to leave a beloved pet behind when relocating. Tell us something no one knows about your charity. Upon completing the 60-day shelter program, families have the opportunity to join the Graduate Program which provides an additional 24-months of resource referrals and peer support. Family Promise is committed to breaking down the barriers that prevent families from attaining a life of independence and self-determination. How do volunteers play a role in your organization? Partnering with an interfaith network of 32 congregations and 1 synagogue, their volunteers provide shelter, food and emotional support to the families. Please describe the specific program for which TCF is providing funding? The Children’s Specialist plays a key role in providing the children in the program a safe place to confidentially share their fears and their triumphs. They are grateful for the investment that Trends Charitable Fund has made in the families that walk through the gates of Family Promise. It is through community partners such as Trends, that together change in the course of a child’s life can occur and can help them not only envision a brighter future ... but achieve one.

RED FOR A FIGHT Hundreds of beautifully dressed women in mostly red gathered at the Arizona Biltmore Resort to raise awareness for heart disease and stroke among women. The hugely successful lunch was chaired by Linda Hunt and vice-chair Christi Lundeen. Several speakers gave moving talks on the effects of strokes and heart disease on young and old. The afternoon proved to be a wealth of information for all who were fortunate enough to attend. Trends Magazine was pleased to be the presenting Media Sponsor. Stephenson Chairman and Founder of Cancer Treatment Centers of America By Barbara Kaplan Cancer Treatment Centers of America is well known for research to help people with cancer. It all began with Chairman and Founder Richard J Stephenson whose entrepreneurial spirit and passionate commitment to the wellbeing of others has helped thousands of people with cancer. He was recently recognized by The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans as an admirable leader who has faced adversity and built this holistic approach to healing. They struggled to raise their family, still giving to their neighbors in ways like raising money to heat boilers for church services. They always helped build any community they lived in. They were also active as Free Masons. Through their hard work and benevolence, they found influence in their community which brought in others to help with their causes. His parents practiced giving and helping everyone, even people who had more than they had. When his mom died of cancer in 1982, because of delays and lack of knowledge and action, he dedicated himself to helping others find ways to fight their illness. He believes cancer patients want to be respected and heard. He wants to empower the patient to fight their cancer. Cancer Center of America’s emphasis is on Holistic medicine. They specialize in an integrated approach which includes modalities such as Iurvedic, Chinese Medicine and Feng Shui and many more. Given these options, patients can decide on their own terms the treatment they want to follow. The patient is empowered and the staff is
carefully focused on what is good for the patient, their fears, anxieties and questions. They bring hope and healing to their patients and their families. His hospitals are “one stop shops” where diagnosis is made in 24 hours and patients don’t have to wait and worry. Understanding that bodies farm the farms; he believes organic certified fresh foods have to be given to all people, especially cancer patients. CTCA provides the healthiest natural foods from these farms. Because he believes that fear drives the immune system to incompetence, every thought is for the patient: to create environments that are comfortable and stress free. He is proud of the trust people have put in him, but he doesn’t understand why. No doubt it’s because he cares so much and makes every breath of his count in his pursuit of the best answers for help in health and healing for all people and especially his patients.

The Stephensons also announced a large gala slated for spring 2018 to again benefit Gateway research. Lovely Trendsetter Tara Hitchcock emceed the extraordinary night. You should have been there!

Hearth ‘61 at Mountain Shadows Hearth ‘61, named for the incorporation of Paradise Valley in May of 1961, serves to preserve the special town in which many of us live and move into the future. The restaurant is not cozy; but hip, clean and cool. The only missteps they made were the magnificent refection pool in the middle of the dining room, which is too high. Had they gone the route of the old Four Seasons Restaurant in New York, diners would have had a far better vantage of the table height water feature, rather than letting it tower above. It’s too pretty to only glance at while one is being seated. We weren’t crazy about the high tops directly in front of the kitchen. They seemed to throw the place off balance. However, the whole layout is very out-of-the-box and pace-setting.
MAIN COURSE:
Tenderloin of Beef: This hardy steak lover’s selection is served with a bit of a crunchy but good charred texture. The flavors are great, especially the blue cheese fondue that swirls round the platter. The slice of beef is huge and well worth every bite. Pan Roasted Salmon: There may not be a better piece of fish in all of Phoenix. The large and well-seasoned salmon is to die for. We don’t know what they’re doing in the kitchen, but whatever it is the end result is well worth it!
SIDES:
We tried both the heirloom crunchy cauliflower with golden raisins and the thyme roasted fingerling potatoes. Nice sizes for splitting and both excellent side dishes to round out a perfect meal.
DESERT:
Peanut Butter Mousse. This is a great and unusual desert. It, however, was served in small candy-like squares. It shouldn’t have been. Delicious but not a substantial portion or presentation.
Bread is served first and is great in flavor, texture and density. They need to leave the basket on the table. It’s so good; you look like a glutton because you keep asking for more.
ORDER THIS:
Chilled Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail: Fantastic flavors, amazing gazpacho and avocado kohlrabi. However it would be a far better appetizer if served with whole shrimp rather than diced. Don’t miss this explosion of flavors. Heirloom Tomatoes: Beautifully presented and very good. Themozzarella is excellent and so are the tomatoes, although the ones greenish in color are a bit off-putting. The aged balsamic is flavorful and beautifully presented on the plate.

With so many restaurants trying to be too clever, many chefs are more concerned about 1980’s hangover food and plate presentation then the actual meal itself. % Instead of bridesmaids, the bride had her close friends as part of her Glam Squad. They got ready with the bride and had a mimosa with her before she walked down the aisle.
% The bride and groom love hip hop and rap music so they had the string quartet learn acoustic rap songs to play during cocktail hour. Songs such as “Blow the Whistle” by Too Short, “California Love” by Tupac were just a few of the tunes played.

The House in My Head 50th Anniversary Reviewed by Bill Dougherty
Following the smashing success of The Sound of Music, famed composer Richard Rogers and his wife Dorothy and internationally awarded interior designer, set off to Fairfield, Connecticut to erect their dream home. Mrs. Rogers had kept index cards on her countless observations of upscale homes she had passed through over the years. She opened the soon-to-be bestselling book, claiming that no one over 45 should ever build a new home with steps or stairs of any kind. The couple built a one story, U-sharped home centered around a swimming pool. The house included: walk-in root and wine cellars, hidden floor level sunk-in mopping stations, a central vacuum system, a snow melting driveway, a kitchen that contained two of every appliance and a gas barbeque. Mrs. Rogers sensed food tastes were changing and devised a massive buffet complete with built-in hot plates. The buffet could open into her thrust room (double living room) and reversed into the butler’s pantry after dinner for collection. There was no formal dining room. Instead, collapsible tables were hidden in cabinetry throughout the thrust room. Wooden occasional chairs that were sprinkled around the massive room and screened in porches were simply pushed up to the various dinner tables for parties in add and subtract fashion. A walk-up bar concealed a hidden and collapsible modular stand-up bar. This could easily be pulled out of the cabinetry and rolled in front of the built-in bar, to accommodate two bartenders. These were a few of Dorothy Rogers’ favorite things. The book stayed on the bestseller list from 1967 well into the 1970s. The home was featured in House Beautiful in 1967 and again in 2014. There are countless websites and chat rooms dedicated to its existence. A mid-century masterpiece and a great book, simply worth a second look!

The Users by Joyce Haber Reviewed by Bill Dougherty Long before Jackie Collins and somewhere in between, the Emilio Pucci-clad Jacqueline Susann and hedonistic Herold Robbins, landed Joyce Haber. Ms. Haber was chosen in 1968 to replace the lofty and biting Los Angeles Times gossip columnist Hedda Hopper who had died in 1966. Convinced that Ms. Haber would be a breath of fresh air; in her cream colored suits and pearl stands, everyone found out that the Grace Kelly lookalike proved far worse than anticipated. She wrote cruel and mean spirited columns and had the ability to make or break any actor or film. In 1976 after less than a decade, Joyce Haber left the Times to write The Users. The book centered on the social elite, Hollywood and rags to riches success of the beautiful and talented Elena Brent. It was the expected shop, bed hop and name drop novel that so many of Jacqueline Susann’s and Herold Robbins books had already covered. But unlike their novels, The Users had a happy ending. The book shot to international bestselling success in the winter of 1977. In 1978 a made-for-television movie followed staring Jaclyn Smith, John Forsyth and George Hamilton and dominated Neilson ratings. Sadly, Joyce Haber never wrote another book again. In the early 1980s she was diagnosed with kidney and liver problems and eventually succumbed to her illnesses at the age of 60. This trashy book is an excellent summer read. It’s filled with everything that once made Hollywood legendary and everything that has sadly gone away, as the entire studio system came to a crashing halt in the late 1970s.
