La Dolce Vita This is how it all started. I was sitting at Vincent’s lunching with the high priestesses of real estate Sandy Baldwin and Ellie Shapiro catching up. Moments later Chef Vincent himself arrived showcasing an enormous New England lobster. Evidently the near 70 year old crustacean was to be feasted upon at the much anticipated Big Game Big Give Super Bowl party just days away. It was quite a site! The next night we were back at Vincent’s again in the bleu room sipping cocktails with renowned party planner George Abrams and the exceptionally attractive realtor Libby Cohen and her equally successful husband Joel. The lobster arrived again. Everyone gasped! But a logistics meeting earlier had sealed the fate of the lobster now aptly named Freedom. The people involved in Big Game, Big Give intercepted and Freedom instead of becoming some of Vincent’s prized lobster bisque or ravioli, now resides peacefully swimming around in the Boston Aquarium. I would have happily steamed him! There’s the Great Gatsby and then there’s Big Game Big Give, the Valley’s answer to the Great Gatsby. If you were fortunate enough to attend this party the night before the Super Bowl, you know what I’m talking about. Philanthropists Linda and Bill Pope joined forces with sports-world icons Matt and Erika Williams to throw the most OTT (yes, that’s over-the-top) party this town has ever seen. Everywhere you looked you saw athletes, celebrities and beautiful people. A few of the high-

By Bill Dougherty lights included Mark Wahlberg moonlighting as an auctioneer, Michael Bay on stage egging him on, Jordin Sparks regaling the crowd with her stunning voice, fireworks exploding overhead and incredible cuisine and spirits throughout the sprawling party. By the way who is Juliette Barkdull and where has she been hiding? Where were all of the Valley’s elite hanging out? Carrie Schnepf’s “Route 66,” which featured grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, fries, tomato soup and Carrie’s homemade peach pie. It was there that I caught up with Michelle Robson, who stole the show in shades of shimmering gold. The Popes, Williams and their host committee must be thrilled since “Arizona Shines” broke all previous Super Bowl fundraising records by raising $1.1 million for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg Foundation and The Giving Back Fund. Florist to the stars Dennis Thompson of Whitehouse Design Studio must have been pleased with the magnificent room he created for the 50th anniversary of the Barrow Ball. Stunning chairs Carole Moreno and Sarah Suggs made sure that every nuance from passed hors d’ oeuvres during cocktails to the perfect menu (nothing stupid or trendy) to sherry and cheese boards served after desert. Yes, it was that good! I was blown away and I’m very jaded after 21 years. There were a lot of lovelies in the ball room who have chaired or are about to chair upcoming events. All I can say ladies is I hope you took notes? Carole and Sarah’s effortless and golden touch made this one of the most coveted invitations of the season! And coveted it is, since fewer than 400 people receive them. You get the picture? On a February night we found ourselves in the posh new classic showroom of Addison and Walt Brown. The Browns threw open the doors to the 5 Arts Circle and a great group of the social swim. It turns out that lovely Addison who could have easily been a super model is the brains behind Brown’s Classic Autos. The company takes any type of classic auto and reengineers them to 2015 road technology. What an amazing concept. We ended the evening fireside at El Chorro with the dark, attractive and mysterious Sue Fletcher. It was the perfect place to end a perfect winter’s evening. The other night at the Phoenician the Scottsdale Honor Ball, 2nd of the big 3 balls for the season was held. Tawny Ruth Lavinia and Christine Watson (the fabulous British export), brought together some of the most impressive people you all know and adore for a more than Impressive affair. I ran into Dennis Thompson yet again. Apparently he was doing double duty as Fresh Start (another smashing event) was being held at the Biltmore. Looks like everyone threw their respective calendars away again this season. Anyway, the ball

was magnificent. All elements of splendor and surprise made for the perfect night. And that must have made the elegant Laura Grafman very pleased. By the way, who was Jill Kristen’s out of town mystery date? A few days ago I saw a fetching photo of the beautiful and b eautifully dressed Eileen Yeung. The photo taken outside of New York’s Lincoln Center made me very sad. Eileen looked amazing, but what made me so sad was our loss. Remember when Symphony Hall bore a striking resemblance to Lincoln Center. What the hell happened! Now there’s a massive concrete building in front of it! Why do we sit back and do nothing? Did they ever find all the Native American art that went missing in terminal 3 after the airport was remodeled? The Coliseum (a masterpiece of mid-century architecture) sits almost abandoned and ignored. The Borgata has been torn down. Apartments now occupy the corner of Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive. This is perhaps the most affluent corner of the city. The Phoenix Open, once the Augusta Masters of the Southwest at the Phoenix Country Club, now a free-for-all in north Scottsdale. In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That Bill Shover just married Kay Loftin. That a gossiping socialite has been cut off at the knees by her friends. That the veneer is quickly wearing off someone who tried so hard to keep herself varnished. That a philanthropist quietly let In Cocktail Polo News you should know: termailly ill children take a ride on their jet. That the social community has tired of a beady-eyed troublemaker, who tries to push her way into the crowd. That a snarky socialite seems a bit humbled now that she is financially at a loss. Now you’re all caught up for the next 15 minutes.

They provide social and legal services. Their teams provide assistance to attorneys representing the childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s protective family. Defenders of Children is utilizing the Trends Charitable Funds grant to facilitate the rescue of children that fall through the cracks of CPS and other traditional protection groups. The work through their Family Services Support Program is child-focused and court-friendly with staff that combines both mental health professionals and attorneys under the same roof. Barrow Ball On January 17, 2015, The Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Institute celebrated its Golden Anniversary with a champagne toast and the announcement that the group has successfully raised $50 million in 50 years to support medical research, education and clinical care at Barrow Neurological Institute. The announcement was made during the 2015 Barrow Grand Ball, hosted at the Arizona Biltmore. The Women’s Board was formed in 1965 to raise funds for research at Barrow Neurological Institute which was dedicated in 1962. The first event, a New Year’s Eve Ball at Casa Blanca Inn in Paradise Valley, netted $26,000. “Without the Women’s Board, Barrow Neurological Institute would not exist as it does today,” said Director Robert Spetzler, MD. “They

have been a source of support both monetarily and spiritually. They’ve really been pivotal to Barrow’s success.” Throughout the last half-century, donations from the annual ball have supported medical research for the treatment of brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, degenerative disc disease, traumatic brain injury and cerebral vascular disease. Funds have enabled more than 150 world-renowned neuroscience professors to participate in a visiting professor program at Barrow. In addition, numerous neuroscience nurses and residents have benefited from the educational opportunities. The Barrow Grand Ball has also supported new and emerging centers of excellence at Barrow, such as the Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center and the Barrow Center for Neuromodulation.

Funds raised by the Women’s Board have supported patient care, education and research at Barrow, including the development of the Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center, which is focused on finding better treatments for brain tumors and, ultimately, a cure.

This year board chairman Nancy Walker, ball co-chairs Carole Moreno and Sarah Suggs were instrumental in netting $2.8 million. These funds will fuel the continued growth of Barrow. “Truly, this Golden Anniversary marks a joyous milestone on the Barrow timeline and reminds us how fortunate we are to be blessed by the dedication of these distinguished women,“ according to Dr. Spetzler.

The Women’s Board was instrumental in creating the Harber Foundation Chair of Neurological Surgery, which helped recruit Robert Spetzler, MD, to join the team at Barrow Neurological Institute. Dr. Spetzler became director of the institute in 1986.

The PANDA’s are a group of 70 Active members that make up the Phoenix Women’s Board of the Steele Children’s Research Center at the University of Arizona. Sixteen years ago, our founding members Robyn DeBell and Penny Gunning assembled a group of women who believe that discovering answers to these childhood diseases comes from taking action, leading them to adopt the name PANDA, which is an acronym that stands for People Acting Now Discover Answers.

What has PANDA accomplished so far? PANDA has raised more than $5.25 million to improve treatments and cures for devastating childhood diseases, as well as to fund and recruit internationally recognized pediatric physicians and scientists to Arizona, providing local families with the most cutting-edge medical care. Last year, we opened an office in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix where local families can participate in our more advanced-stage studies and receive care without the inconvenience of traveling to Tucson. Tell us more about the Steele Children’s Research Center? The Steele Center is the only center in Arizona where physician-scientists care for children and conduct “bench to bedside” research in pediatric diseases. At any given time, there are approximately 100 research projects in progress.

Who are this team of doctors and researchers at the Steele Children’s Research Center? You mean our secret weapon! These brilliant doctors and researchers are the reason for Steele’s countless successes. Recruited from around the globe, they are led fervently by our director, Dr. Fayez Ghishan. Dr. Ghishan’s prestigious awards and his ability to relate to children makes him a superhero to our young patients and their families. He is our “Man of Steele.” Tell us about your event this year? Our 16th annual PANDA Children’s Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held at The Phoenician on Saturday, April 25th, 2015 at 11 a.m. This year’s event will support the PANDA Children’s Anti-Tumor Immunity Program and endowment. The goal of this program is to prevent cancer from relapsing in children. It will be a glittering event and a year of record breaking successes!

What’s the next big trend in fashion? There are none. Trend-driven fashion ended in the 1990s. Now anything goes. Who are your heroes? Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey. Who would you like to have dinner with? Halston, YSL and Marlene Dumas. What is your worst habit? Over analyzing absolutely everything.

Who inspired your craft? My mother. She was creative and stylish. And she did it all while raising a family too.

7 Questions for … Siena Lasker What are your favorite jewelry designers? I really didn’t have any to begin with. I was so young. I just came up with the designs myself.

At 24 years of age, beautiful Siena Lasker has taken the jewelry world by storm. Spotted by savvy Neiman Marcus Gm Karen Katz at a Fred Siegel boutique, the jeweler became an overnight sensation! Her colorful and artisan pieces now appear in more than 25 Neiman Marcus stores across the country. She dropped by the Scottsdale store a few weeks ago, where we had the chance to ask her a few thought-provoking questions.

What’s your worst habit? Procrastinating, but I still get my work done.

Where would you like to live? Paris and London.

What’s the hardest part of your profession? Invoicing! 90% of my pieces of jewelry are all one of a kind.

Who inspired your craft? My mother. She remains unpaid to this day and is the most intrigal part of running my company. She has a great gift and eye. She completely understands the properties of stones.

What 7 people living or dead would you invite to your dinner party? Audrey Hepburn, Hillary Clinton, Beyoncé Knowles, Dr. Astrid Herger, Karl Lagerfeld, Malala Yousafzai and my late grandfather Dave.

On what occasion do you fib or exaggerate? I don’t know? But I try never to.

Focus on the Heard Museum Colin Coonsis, Zuni Pueblo born in 1981, has created bracelets that prove to be more challenging than the usual earrings and pendants. The flow of water design signifies an inspired period of ‘going with the flow’ rather than making jewelry according to a buyer or collector’s requests. He watched his parents rely on ‘orders’ passed from the local trading post as the way to make a living. An early yearning persuaded him to make jewelry according to his own design without the llmits of satisfying purchasers. His creations are of silver, turquoise, mother-of-pearl and shell.

The featured turquoise bracelet is called ‘Water Series.’ The mother-of-pearl cuff was a stepping stone in which his jewelry became much more detailed. The inlay becomes smaller as his passion to create evolves. This cuff is in his ‘Pixels’ style of inlay. For Colin it represents an extension of life’s journey as an artist. Each tiny stone demonstrates the vastness of design and inspiration for him. He states that he is never satisfied with his work and is always striving to do better.

The brilliant and beautiful lawyer, who for the last 2 decades has been named one of the top 5 family attorneys in Arizona. Instead of taking the road to negativity, Ms. Hallier chose a splendid and uplifting approach to ending a marriage. The book looks into various topics including: speaking to your children, finding the right attorney and keeping the court system from controlling too much of your future. Every aspect of this book is positive and an opportunity for growth, rather than the constant pitfalls associated with the subject. An excellent read. “The Wiser Divorce” focuses on the tools and strategies to end a marriage with respect, dignity and a final goal of making your new life the very best it can be. Everyone who is about to divorce or already has done so, needs to read this guide. It’s that well written and often extremely enjoyable.

FOCUS ON SMoCA

Radiate, Latex Paint on Wall-2014 Working with restricted formal elements – a limited palette of yellows, oranges, fuchsias and deep purple as well as a composition of calculated, repeating forms – artist James Marshall generates a visual pulse in SMoCA Lounge. His energetic painting takes its chromatic cue from the intense heat and light of Arizona and the sharp geometric radiation of that light through the rectangular clerestory window in the northeast corner of the Lounge. While designing Radiate, Marshall was cocommissioned by SMoCA and Scottsdale Public Art to create a mural that extends from the exterior Nancy and Art Schwalm Sculpture Courtyard through the Museum’s lobby and retail spaces inside the building. Titled Shift, this vibrant installation further energizes the Museum with Marshall’s bold, graphic style.

Marshall works in multiple artistic spheres. In museums and galleries, his paintings reflect formal training at the Art Institute of Chicago and time as a studio assistant to renowned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. In the streets of major cities, he’s recognized for mural projects blending pop, punk and the cartoonish character Space Monkey. In the studios

of the surf, skate and music gear company Hurley, he collaborates with product designers and retail experts.
