La Dolce Vita The Season October to May People are taking about Dancing with the Stars Arizona, the genius idea of Marguerite and Jack Clifford and Glenna Shapiro back in 2007. As many of you know I went kicking and swearing to the first competition. That first year things were pretty Spartan for all of us competing and I don’t think anyone was prepared for what happened the next year. People throughout the social swim would have sold their first borns to have the chance to compete at the next gala. The event continued triumphantly for a few years then became soggy with politicians instead of philanthropists and community leaders. You get the picture? Anyway that all changed this year. Chairs Leslie Rich and Kathleen Taddie did a magnificent job returning the evening to the glitz and glamour that once was. Although party-planner-to-the-stars George Abrams reached out to me and many others to return as a legacy dancer I declined, preferring to take a seat at one of Linda Pope’s tables instead. After all it was Linda who took the gala to skyrocketing heights in 2008. We sat next to each other after competing in 2007 when Linda swept the evening and went home with the prize! I realized then that she was in it for the long run and she didn’t disappoint. We were all thrilled that the Kidney Foundation honored her this year – she deserved it! I was also taken by the politeness of Scott Lavinia and Jacqueline Nerguizian, who wished the other dancers well in their

introduction videos rather than telling the audience they would smear the competition. That speaks volumes of their personalities and why they were there. Since I purchased Trends in 2000 our annual gala has gone through many transitions. We’ve had daytime events and evening events. Fashionalities became known as Trendsetters and “Beat the Heat” became an “Evening of Trends” thanks to Linda Pope, who suggested the change (she also came up with the Trendsetter name). We heard from many who believed the event was better suited as an evening gala, so we decided to not only return it to an evening event, but also return to the Camelback Inn where the event was held for almost two decades. An Evening of Trends, benefitting the Trends Charitable Fund and its 2016 grant recipients (Cortney’s Place, Foundation for Blind Children, Free Arts for Abused Children, Singleton Moms, Teen Lifeline and Tumbleweed), will be held Oct. 15, 2016, and is being chaired by Julie Bowe, Kimberly Jacobsen and Beth McRae. The night promises to be a fun-filled extravaganza full of Trendsetters, Fabulous Phoenicians, dinner and dance. So please mark your calendars and I hope you plan on joining us. Continued on page 10

La Dolce Vita – Continued from page 9 When was the last time you looked at your spouse and said “Honey let’s dust off grandma’s tiara and empty the vault of all its jewels?” That happened just the other night at the Phoenician as the Honor Ball stopped to celebrate Forty Fabulous Years. This must have made Laura Grafman happy – she was finally honored for her tireless dedication to the gala and all things surrounding it. Chair Susie Muzzy, breathtaking in evening shades of black, welcomed all who passed through the reception where passed hors d’ oeuvres and champagne added to the merriment. Vice chairs Nancy Harris Robertson and Helene Presutti-Presutti (inside joke), heart stopping in their own rights, wooed the crowd. Everywhere you looked you saw someone fabulous. When I ran into Harriett Friedland, drop-deadsmashing in green, I told her how much she reminded me of internationally famous socialite Babe Paley. In a recent book Babe was described as not only beautiful and terminally chic, but also the nicest lady in New York. I think Harriett fits that Harriett and Jack Friedland description to a tee as well!
I’ve always said that the best time to leave a party is just when it’s getting started. However, like the Barrow Grand Ball weeks earlier, I stayed at the Honor Ball until dawn’s early light, retrieving the jewels that Robert C. Wesley so graciously agreed to drape the three beautiful chairs in, just as he had a few weeks earlier. Everyone swooned throughout the evening and guests were blinded with some of the most incredible jewelry you’ve ever seen! In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That an inconvenient woman has once again solicited two others to do her bidding, leaving many to wonder what she has on the two ladies. Ladies, each time you defend her all you’re doing is getting everyone in the community to talk. That it’s not polite for resorts to slam down hosted bars before the guests in line are served regardless of company policy. That someone on the wrong side of unattractive has unleashed her vengeance on a beautiful and well-respected socialite simply because she now has some board power to wield. That a philanthropist treated workers in a fast-paced restaurant to lunch over the holidays, picking up the tab on pizzas for more than 50 employees. That a foreigner and her husband never have to worry about appearing in this publication, since she has nothing nice to say about us to our cherished and longtime advertisers.

Trends Magazine names Beth Ames Swartz its “Artist-of-the-Year 2016” Beth Ames Swartz says, “I explore systems of knowledge translating philosophical concepts into aesthetic visual experiences.” In the early 1970s, Swartz focused on the fact that many philosophies and worldviews are based upon a set of “classical elements.” The attempt to categorize these “elements” may be viewed as an early stage of scientific exploration into the nature of being. Greek culture listed four elements (earth, air, fire and water) to which Aristotle added a fifth, aether (a.k.a. ether). The Chinese have a system of five symbolic entities, often translated into English as “five elements” but known in Chinese as wˇuxíng and more appropriately interpreted as “five states of change” or “five forces.” For the Chinese, these five “states of change” are: wood, fire, soil (earth), metal, and water. Swartz completed a series of works visualizing Earthflow (see Trends, February 2016, p16) as well as series on Air, Umi (Japanese for water), and Prana (the Sanskrit word for “life force”). Now she was ready for a series on Fire. Little did Swartz realize that her visual exploration of this concept would preoccupy her art for the next five years. Swartz investigated the possibilities of disorder as a creative force, echoing Hinduism’s god, Shiva, the destroyer/transformer. Swartz began creating her Fire Works using the destructive effect of fire before reordering her art in a continuous cycle of creation: life, death, rebirth; order, disorder, reordering. The first art exhibition ever held at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts featured sixty early Fire Works by Swartz.

Lucky Lucky got her name for a reason. She’s lucky to be alive. She’s now ready for a home and prefers to be queen of the household and reside as the only pet. She would appreciate hovering servants, cozy cat beds for napping and plenty of chin scratches. Barrow Neurological Foundation For more than 50 years, the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation has quietly organized and hosted one of the most sophisticated and successful annual fundraisers in the Valley: the Barrow Grand Ball. This group has contributed more than $54 million to Barrow Neurological Institute, making it the institute’s largest cumulative group donor – supporting medical research for the treatment of brain tumors, migraines, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, stroke and countless other neurological diseases. With the assistance of this fundraising powerhouse, Barrow has evolved into one of the most sought-after medical centers for patients in need of comfort, quality care, hope and healing; even after they’ve been told elsewhere that “there’s nothing more that can be done” for their debilitating neurological conditions. The 2016 Women’s Board Chair Angela Melczer and Grand Ball Co-Chairs Sandy Hecomovich and Amy Thurston successfully raised more than $4 million for a wide variety of research efforts at Barrow, with a special emphasis on the work of Rachael Sirianni, PhD, a lead researcher at Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center.
Rachael Sirianni, PhD, is a lead researcher at Barrow Brain Tumor Research Center at Barrow Neurological Institute. Her lab is exploring how nanoparticles can be engineered to deliver drugs across the blood-brain barrier.
The goal of Dr. Sirianni’s lab is to identify new methods for safely transporting therapeutic drugs through the naturally impenetrable blood-brain barrier to target deadly brain tumors while sparing healthy tissue. Support of Dr. Sirianni’s research will drive newly discovered tumor-target therapies into clinical trial – accelerating the discovery of more effective treatments and a much-needed cure. Questions for Nina McLemore Why did you leave corporate America and become a fashion designer? Actually, I have been a fashion designer as long as I can remember. Growing up, my mother and I designed and made everything I wore (except blue jeans). We spent hours selecting the fabric, cutting, basting and making my clothes. My Mother was very particular about fabric. Even as a teenager I only wore linen, cotton, wool or silk and our collection is still primarily natural fabrics. I founded Liz Claiborne Accessories in 1980 and by the early 90’s it became clear to me that the department store business was not a growing one, so I decided to leave and get my MBA to learn more about how to finance a business. I then founded a Private Equity firm with 2 partners and invested in small consumer and women owned businesses, but did not like being a minority investor. Many of my professional women friends asked me to consult with them on their wardrobes and I realized that there was a serious lack of clothing that was elegant, well made and that fit the lifestyle of busy women. The other driving force was that I wanted more money to give to charity, primarily focusing on women, children and the arts. Thus the creation of Nina McLemore, Inc. What do you hope your clothing line does for women? My goal is to make simple, beautiful clothes from fine fabrics that compliment a woman’s style. Clothes that are clean, understated and elegant – that she can wear anywhere in the world. Clothes that travel and look good at the end of the day. It is important that the collection fits women who are size 0 and women who are size 18, who are petite and who are tall. I want to design clothes that will make women feel attractive, comfortable and that they will always be tastefully dressed where ever they go. We spend a lot of time on color and fit. You will find that we specialize in bright clear colors. It may take up to six fittings to make sure that the fit is perfect and that the garments will fit a wide range of body types.

Where do you get your fashion inspiration from? We of course look at the trends from the major international designers – or at least the ones I believe have a strong sense of style, not what is “in fashion”. The fabric mills, particularly the northern Italian, French and British mills are great inspirations. There is an Asian inspiration to the collection as I love the clean simple styles, the bright colors, and wonderful embroidery patterns and have spent a lot of time in China and Japan. I have also studied the great textiles woven in Florence in the 16th and 17th centuries, the beautiful silks, tapestries and velvets. Most of all, I am inspired by our clients and often think of certain women and what I have seen when women put something on and it makes the most beautiful aesthetic picture! There is always an element of practicality as the clothes must be comfortable, and look great at the end of a long day! Who influenced you or helped you break into the clothing business? All of the women in my family were great seamstresses. My grandfather died quite young and my grandmother supported herself by designing and sewing. My Mother taught me great tailoring and how to create my own personal wardrobe. I did not think of this as a career, but on the ship on the way back from my junior year in France, I met two women who had been to Paris to the couture shows, and I immediately understood that I could have a career in fashion. What 7 living or dead people would you invite to a dinner party? I would like to have national coverage with about 25 Nina McLemore Stores, 300 women who sell our collection privately through trunk shows in their community and an active internet business. In addition my first international store I would like to have in London, and expand to France, China, etc.
There is a worldwide need for our type of clothing. The name international designers concentrate on the top 1% and women who want the latest fashion item. Most of their business is accessories and cosmetics with the runway fueling the demand for other products. I want to provide women who are professionals and who choose to focus on their femininity and power and need elegant clothing. Clothing lines come and go. Do you have any fears regarding the future of your line? While everyone talks about the pace of technology innovation, a designer has to create 4-6 collections a year and make each of them new and different from the one before. Even a technology company does not have 4-6 releases a year. We have to constantly reach new clients and provide new and interesting clothing for our existing clients. That is a constant challenge. What untapped market do you hope to break into? Our clients tend to be women in their 40’s to 60’s – the baby boomers – as they have the appreciation of fine materials, that we make the collection in the U.S. and can afford the $700-$800 for a jacket. They also understand the importance of the image they create and the impact on other people of how they look. The next market we will develop is the upper end of the millennials who are now becoming the business and community leaders of the next generation and for whom the fashion industry designs casual and party clothes, but not “I am to be taken seriously” clothes.

“Ted Hughes: The Unauthorized Life” By Jonathan Bane Reviewed by Bill Dougherty There are two literary camps. The camp of Ted Hughes haters who still believe the Poet Laureate of England was responsible for the suicide of his wife American poet Sylvia Plath in 1963. And the Ted Hughes zealots who believe the much troubled Ms. Plath led herself to her own doom. For more than five years, renowned scholar Jonathan Bane has unearthed the entire Hughes archive of notes, poems and endless pages of drafts from the man who many consider to be the finest writer since John Keats. Throughout the book, it is evident that Mr. Hughes’ life was remembered, lived, shaped and reshaped through his eloquent and extraordinary pen. Though Mr. Bane does a tremendous job in celebrating Ted Hughes in a rather lengthy but thought provoking biography, the reader nor the author can escape the complicated and complex relationship between Mr. Hughes and Sylvia Plath. Both were equally famous in literary circles at the time of her shocking and tragic death. Ted Hughes appears even at the end of his life to be unable to shake the scandal many believed he helped to create in 1963. Most feel his unearthly talents will be forever over shadowed by one of the most infamous moments in twentieth century literature.

He has been portrayed in several films, plays, books and countless articles. Yet little has appeared about his long and complex relationship with a group of woman known to the world as Swans. The women: Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, Gloria Guinness, Pamela Churchill, Marella Agnelli and the lady referred to as the nicest and most beautiful woman in all of New York City, Babe Paley. The book starts as Mr. Capote befriends the group fresh off the fame of his recent bestseller Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Though the ladies are unsure of the small man with the Peck’s Bad Boy reputation, they are easily charmed and fooled by their new Svengali. Thus a deep and extremely c omplicated friendship
develops between Truman Capote, Babe Paley and eventually her husband CBS CEO William Paley. Unfortunately the couple is unaware of the destruction the larger than life writer will someday leave in their path and the paths of many others. Centered around Manhattan’s elite from the late 1950s thru the mid-1970s, the book is rich with name dropping, cigarette smoke, cocktail shakers and designer ball gowns. The story reaches its zenith in 1966. Mr. Capote; a guest at a black and white ball given by writer Dominick Dunne and his wife in Bel Air; steals their idea, returns to New York and throws his own leaving the stunned Dunnes off his guest list. Fresh on the heels of his prize winning masterpiece In Cold Blood, his ball becomes the party
of the century! By this time the Lilliputian writer is off the rails and out of control. The book continues like a cyclone down Fifth Avenue. Anyone who has ever attended a charity ball needs to read this book!
