Remembering ... Kathleen Lang By Bill Dougherty
When I was told early one morning this spring about the passing of 2000 Trendsetter Kathleen Lang, I was not surprised, I was shocked! I knew she had been very quietly battling melanoma cancer, yet I don’t think many of us really knew the profundity of the situation. Just last winter I helped the Lang’s find their car in a darkened parking lot at a Christmas party. Kathleen did look thin but she was still so heart-stoppingly beautiful that it never crossed my mind that many of us would not see her again. My first introduction to Kathleen Lang came at an Evening of Trends cocktail reception at the Camelback Inn. I remember when I introduced myself to her as the Society Reporter from Trends, she could not have been any nicer. A year later when I purchased the publication, I had the opportunity to work with her on the Trends

Remembering ... Gary Herberger By Bill Dougherty
A gentleman and a scholar: those are the two words I think of when the name Gary Herberger comes to mind. The 2004 Fabulous Phoenician passed away late last winter and left one of the most amazing legacies imaginable. When I was first introduced to Gary and Jeanne Herberger in 1994 at a cocktail party, my first thought was that they looked as if they were sent from central casting to play the parts of beautiful and wealthy philanthropists. They were both so attractive that one was left almost speechless. But that was just the icing on the cake. They were one of the first true power couples in the Valley. Everything they touched turned to gold. Gary was a true visionary. His background in architecture proved to be a tremendous benefit to not only his family business but ASU as well. Through the years, Jeanne and Gary Herberger donated more than an unspeakable amount to the Tempe University. Today there are countless buildings and schools named for the great man. They will serve students for years beyond yours and mine. Gary was also one of the last to study under Frank Lloyd Wright. This was something of which he seldom spoke, largely due to his shy and retiring personality. A genus, a dapper and handsome man; yet completely understated and elegant. He was a man who never called attention to himself, yet deserved it more than most. My last interactions with the Herberger’s on a constant basis were when they chaired the Phoenix Symphony Ball and due to their brilliance turned it into a New Year’s Eve black tie ball. Their idea and subsequent success was tremendous. We were so impressed with the ball that we offered to chair as a family the next year. People such as Gary Herberger only come around once. He belongs to a lost breed of men who built buildings on a handshake and made the world around all of us a much better place to live. He will be missed.

Spring is in the air and what better time to showcase our 10 new Trendsetters and Fabulous Phoenician. Donovan’s Steak and Chop House, which incidentally was just awarded the Best Steak House in Phoenix yet again, opened its doors to the honorees just a few weeks ago. 2015 Trendsetter Jan Jozoff, who couldn’t be any lovelier, did an extraordinary job making sure the richly paneled walls, fine works of art and unbeatable ambiance of her restaurant were absolutely perfect for the many ladies who would join the others for our annual luncheon. During the orientation, I had the opportunity to explain to how the award started in 1985 and how it has evolved today. Originally the 10 ladies were called “Fashionable Phoenicians.” Several years later the award was named “Fashionality” and in 2001 we changed it to “Trendsetter.” This is the oldest award in the state to honor women for their tireless dedication to the community. The award has been greatly imitated by many organizations. However, it’s still the first and the most prestigious. Sorry to disappoint. Elsewhere Neiman Marcus Scottsdale, a great friend to this publication and an even better one to the community, threw out the welcome mat as well. General Manager Tim Braun together with

the store PR czar Ashleigh Schufeldt and BJ Johnson, everyone’s friend and Fine Apparel Manager, pulled out all the stops for our new Trendsetters and the rest of our group as well. In an opulent fashion show, the elite Dallas based specialty store showcased heart-stopping ball gowns for this season as well as next fall too. It was a beautiful morning and it was another great opportunity to thank these amazing women for their outstanding efforts to make Phoenix such a great place to live. We see these women out constantly, yet I doubt many of us really know just how hard they work, not only in their occupations but the boundless amounts of charity work they quietly do. We applaud our 2017 Trendsetters, our Fabulous Phoenician and the more than 350 people that have come before you since 1985. You deserve this! It’s no secret that the Arizona Humane Society’s annual luncheon Compassion with Fashion was founded in 1999 by my wife Beth, her sister Stephanie and their mother Betty McRae. The Camelback Inn did a tremendous job moving the crowd from check in to the Sonoran terrace and then into the packed ball room. They should also be complimented on their service, which I think is still the very best in the Valley. A Few Minutes with Oday Shakar Since we last caught up with Oday Shakar; he moved his West Coast operation to New York, opened a showroom in the garment district and reinvented his amazing clothing line. We had the opportunity to speak with the internationally recognized designer directly, after a smashing private cocktail party and fashion show in Paradise Valley. The next morning we found Mr. Shakar at Neiman Marcus, Scottsdale in the middle of a very successful trunk show. Here’s what he had to say. Why did you move your operation to New York? I wanted to totally reinvent my label and make lots of changes to my new line. The garment district proved to be the perfect place to do this. While you still have a large evening gown collection, you’ve made lots of changes. We’ve introduced separates, jackets, knits and lots of my Arab-American influences into the new line. You’ve put a new spin on something we used to call “Bridge.” Exactly. I call it “Lifestyle,” an affordable collection of clothing that is meant to be worn more than once. A casual yet sophisticated collection of clothing made for everyday use. There’re a lot of Bill Blass and Halston influences in your new line. I wanted the ability to transform with a “less is more” attitude. Yes, both designers did influence me tremendously and when I put my own touch into the collection, the end result was very appealing. Tell us about your retro neck lines? Again, going back to my Middle East heritage, I wanted to incorporate beaded and bejeweled necklines, turtleneck halters and dreamy flowing and fitted fabrics. What’s next for Oday Shakar? Furs, lots of knits, caftans and all incorporated into some of the finest and most durable fabrics available. I think you’ll all be quite pleased. I’m here to stay!

Entering Scott Foust Photography Studio in downtown Scottsdale is magical. It feels like stepping into a white wonderland of photographic possibilities. Your cares are left behind and the focus is all about you. The anticipation is how Scott will wave his magic camera wand and capture your essence. He has an eye for a person’s soul and strives to bring it out through the camera’s lens. It begins with his all white studio where he has created areas for people to prepare for their photographic adventure. Then lights, action and camera … he begins to study his subject or subjects to bring out their best features. He explains how he holds a

Lilly by Kathryn Livingston Reviewed by Bill Dougherty There are two things that are absolutely synonymous with Palm Beach; extreme wealth and Lilly Pulitzer. Until 1963 the world knew very little about the soon-to-be fashion icon. She and her then husband Peter were arguably the most beautiful couple on the barrier island. A bit bohemian for the absolute wealth from which Lilly Pulitzer hailed, along with the publishing empire she married into, hers was not a world of high society balls. She preferred to raise her family and squeeze juice from the citrus she obtained from the family orchards at her juice stand just off Worth Avenue. But since she kept staining her dresses, she hired a dressmaker and designed several colorful shifts to disguise the stains. When she started selling the dresses literally off her back at the juice stand, she knew she was on to something. Often called the accidental fashion designer, Lilly Pulitzer changed the world almost in an instant. She became part of the mid-1960s Youth Quake and turned the fashion industry upside down. In Lilly by Kathryn Livingston, we see a far darker side of Lilly Pulitzer than her brightly colored fabrics and the poolside lifestyle she promoted. Her biography is filled with heart-breaking infidelities, scandals and loss; something the designer kept very private until the end of her life. When big business swallowed the fashion world in the late 1980s, Lilly simply paid off her creditors and shut down her business. But the world missed her vivid collections so much that the line was successfully resurrected in 1993 and taken global. This is a great insider’s view into not only all the nuances of Palm Beach but also the cut throat fashion industry and a brilliant lady who forever changed the way people dress.

Before the One Up Club crammed themselves down our throats behind the wheel of a Escalade. Before Vanity Fair Magazine decided Annie Leibovitz was the best photographer that ever lived. Before everyone from the under belly of society to the rich who craved being a celebrity, we had Slim Aarons. A World War II Purple Heart veteran, Mr. Aarons moved to California and set up shop capturing some of the most beautiful and memorable photos ever taken. His was a generation that believed you didn’t flaunt what you had or were. The celebrities, Jet-Set and old money were a quiet and often private world. However, Slim Aarons always seemed to make the guest list. Whether pool-side in Palm Springs, a drawing room in Bel-Air, on the slopes of Zermatt or a deserted beach in the Bahamas; Slim Aaron always seemed to be in the right place. Perhaps his most iconic photo was that of New England socialite C.Z. Guest and her son, photographed at her mother-in-law’s exquisite home in 1955 known as Villa Artemis in Palm Beach. This elegant coffee table book serves as one of the last to showcase the beautiful people when they still had class, manners, style and grace. A fine travelogue from the end of the war to the end of the roaring eighties, each page serves as a glimpse into a more civilized era.
