Just as we were all finally shaking off a very cold winter for Phoenix and blooming into spring, I received a telephone call that Karl Eller had died. While he had a magnificent life, my initial thoughts were of those glory days in the late 1960s and 70s, when I was first introduced to the Eller’s. Carolyn and Ron Warner at the time threw monumental backyard parties and I remember the Eller’s always being present. Karl Eller was a tried & true Arizonan. A native of Tucson, he would go on to U of A and meet with great success as a football player and a high-ranking leader of the Phi Gama Delta fraternity there. After moving to Phoenix, Mr. Eller became a leading Arizona partner in the New York based firm of Foster and Kleiser. By the late 1960s, Mr. Eller had become a great visionary. He became a primary investor in the Phoenix Suns in 1968 and was largely responsible for bringing Jerry Colangelo to the team, long before Mr. Colangelo decided to purchase the trail-blazing sports organization. It was also around this time, that Mr. Eller merged his outdoor advertising business with KTAR and formed Combined Communications Inc. The company would go on to own countless radio and television stations, as well as outdoor advertising companies and many daily newspapers. The hugely successful company was absorbed by Gannett in 1979. Then Mr. Eller set his sights on Circle K and eventually turned the Phoenixbased, quick market into the second largest convenience chain in the United States. While I knew both Karl Eller and his much-adored wife Stevie, I really didn’t get to know them personally until Mrs. Eller became a Trendsetter in 1999. While still a reporter for Trends at the time, I placed the call to the Eller’s; they were both over the moon! I was so taken by their boundless commitment to Valley philanthropy and the University of Arizona. They were literally at almost every fund-raising event in Phoenix. Mr. Eller was an extraordinary man, who never forgot his roots in the state he helped build into an empire. I look back on those Bartlett Estate days with such fondness. Karl Eller, Mary DeConcini, Carolyn and Ron Warner and Cheryl and Jeff Fine all resided in the small little neighborhood across the street from Biltmore Fashion Park. While I was only an occasional visitor at the time, I truly believe I met some of the finest people in the world. I suspect they are all still having those legendary parties up in heaven. My guess is that Karl Eller is planning them. He will be missed…

Vincent on Camelback played host to our 10 new Trendsetters and Fabulous Phoenician for 2019. They include: Ivi Ciolli, Amanda Garmany, Abby Leadon, Tess Loo, Carrie Martz, Tiffany Quayle, Joan Raskin, Chrissy Sayare, Aimee Smith and Dee Dee Vecchione; and Betty McRae is our Fabulous Phoenician. Champagne flowed like water as this very accomplished and lovey group of ladies had the opportunity to meet each other and mingle, before enjoying a splendid French luncheon that only Leevon (herself a 1994 Trendsetter,) together with her husband Vincent Guerithault could master. Yes, their restaurant is that good and still wins countless culinary awards. You’ll hear a lot more from these lovely ladies in the summer issue of Trends in June and November 1st at Montelucia when they are presented. Stay tuned, there’s always more ... People are talking about the taped telephone conversation that took place between a socialite and another woman. For weeks, our phone lines rang-off-the-hook and we were besieged with countless texts and emails. While their conversation was not pleasant, it was their business and not that of the social community. Myself, a victim of a taped phone conversation back in 2002 with a socialite who would later take her life, I advise anyone to always be polite.
You never know who’s listening in or taping on the end of line. Remember what happened to Richard Nixon? My experience was almost 19 years ago and I’m glad I chose to take the high road throughout the conversation. What bothered me so much about this recent situation was how many ladies and gentlemen were willing to crucify both parties. Remember, let he who is without sin cast the first stone. You get the picture? The fashion world was saddened last month by the death of the iconic Karl Lagerfeld. He was the Lilliputian man who hid behind dark glasses and was never without his trademark fan. While I was never a fan of his fashions at the house of Chanel, his Chloe line was extraordinary. He did certainly make his mark. I was working for I. Magnin & Co. when Mr. Lagerfeld took over the Chanel line. It’s no secret that Coco Chanel designed her clothes with shear comfort of the customer in mind. She once said of Christian Dior’s “New Look,” that he designed those clothes because he wanted to wear them himself and that no woman in her right mind would ever want Continued on page 12

to be so uncomfortable. I remember the first season of Lagerfeld for Chanel when it arrived in our much-missed specialty store. Kay Berry, our revered personal shopper, said to me “Coco Chanel is rolling over in her grave!” He did take the label to soaring new heights and gave it a masochistic new look, complete with combat boots and torn fabrics and bondage-like accessories. I remember when I had the privilege of interviewing Carolina Herrera; she told me that she had explicit instructions in her will that when she dies, so does her line. I can’t say I blame her. We’ve all seen the carnage that has been brought into countless fashion empires such as Halston, Jacques Fath, St. John, and Anne Kline and on and on and on. Speaking of Coco Chanel fashion, something I equate to Carolyn Jackson, a beautiful lady who is always dressed to the tens in Chanel may be headed for a different vocation? The other morning I awoke to the horror of a text from Susie Wesley. The text read, “Look in your driveway.” Apparently, Mrs. Jackson who has a wicked sense of humor, decided to personally address my comments about Mrs. Wesley and her driving the Barrett-Jackson massive motor coach across the country to their next world-famous collector’s auto auction in Palm Beach. I walked out to the drive way of our Paradise Valley Mid-Century home. The same home that was the biggest draw in the Phoenix Business Journal’s home tour last summer and fall, to find Mrs. Jackson behind the wheel of the huge vehicle! While I knew she was not only stunningly beautiful and exceptional
smart, I had no idea she could navigate a big rig! I’ve been told that Mrs. Jackson plans to enroll in the Wally Thorpe School of Trucking as soon as the car auction schedule slows for the season. This decision should make her husband Craig very happy, as he will now have a built-in driver for all those cross-county runs ... Lee Radziwill has died. She was the younger sister of Jackie Kennedy, and was once a princess by marriage to a titled Polish prince. There was little written about the famed interior designer, talk show host, public relations agent and international hostess at her passing. I couldn’t help but think of the recent books written about the two most famous sisters of the 20th Century. Several accused Mrs. Radziwill of a liaison with JFK during his 1963 trip to Berlin. It’s also no secret that Mrs. Onassis left her nothing in her will, when she perished in 1994. I adored the fact the Mrs. Radziwill usually smoked during television interviews and photo sessions and was extremely candid. Her to-hell-with-tomorrow attitude was always refreshing in a world of judgement and political correctness. She was 85. BAD SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: Apparently a socialite with rarified southern charm couldn’t crash a recent gala. Evidently, although she tried on countless occasions to gain access to an air-tight guest-list controlled event, she was given the boot literally. Really, for someone who could have easily afforded the lofty ticket price; you now look pathetic to the entire black-tie circuit. How sad!

INNER-VIEW Although there are many parts that make up the sister trio and owners of My Sister’s Closet, they all agree that at this time in their lives, fun is an important ingredient/ part of their everyday lives.
THE FUN SISTERS! ANN SINNER TESS LOO
The two sisters I inner-viewed Ann Siner and Tess Loo are beautiful, charming and oh so smart, yet so different from each other. Ann is the analytical numbers crunching partner and Tess is the creative visualizer. Tess is hands on with all the displays and themes in all 14 stores. Both very hardworking women who make up a successful duo. The third sister, Jennifer lives in San Diego running the stores there. They have 14 locations for My Sister’s Closet which has grown over 28 years. Additionally, they have a charitable location where all leftover items are donated to various organizations totaling over $485,000 this year. They spoke of their mother who was an inspiration and example in their young lives. She lost an arm in a car accident at 17 years of age and raised her family, opened a successful gift store and started a kindergarten in their home town, all in the early sixties. One of the things they attribute to their success is their high standards for their customers and staff alike. People who sell their possessions in their stores are made to feel important, as well as the people who buy those items.
They strive to raise the height bar every day. They believe that loving what you do is most important. Hard work and perseverance are critical yet can only be sustained by a passion for what you do. This was also encouraged by their mother who emphasized that pleasing others was not as important as celebrating who you are. They also learned to be independent and survive regardless of the adversity. And through it they learned to make good choices. Tess says, “Always work putting your best foot forward with grace, kindness and humility. Practice love and if you mess it up, do it again!” Ann says, “I’ve had an incredibly lucky life and I worked for it! Things are not handed to you!” She also says, “Always do your best and love what you do!” When asked what Ann’s mantra is today, she said, “I want a tee shirt that says, ‘I’d rather be drinking wine and rescuing dogs!’”Which by the ways she does also and was honored by the Humane Society for her many, many hours of support, devotion and service.

COMPASSION WITH FASHION An enormous crowd gathered on a sunny spring afternoon at the Camelback Inn for the much anticipated Compassion with Fashion luncheon and pet adoption. Sister act Ann Siner and Tess Loo returned again for a second time to chair the magnificent luncheon. Together with the support of the community, the two were able to once again raise a ton of money for the Arizona Humane Society and their tremendous no-kill shelters throughout the state. The afternoon was emceed by 3-TV anchors Heather Moore and Scott Pasmore. The luncheon was a first for Mr. Pasmore who replaced Brandon Lee after he departed the station last fall. Compassion With Fashion was founded in 1999 by Betty McRae and her daughters Beth McRae and Stephanie McRae Campbell. It has over the years become one of the most successful afternoons on the social calendar. White Rite: Missy Turner in head to toe spring with a beautiful hat too.

Checking In With ... Sheryl and Rob Lowe Sapphire-eyed couple, Sheryl and Rob Lowe, dropped by Neiman Marcus Scottsdale just the other afternoon for a personal appearance. The beautiful and very nice couple was in the Valley promoting Mrs. Lowe’s stunning jewelry line. Here’s what they had to say ... How did you get into the business? I started in design School with a great passion for jewelry, but I became sidetracked as a make-up artist for the studio system. That job gave me the opportunity to travel the world. I began collecting minerals, stones and both semi and precious gems. When I retired to raise our two sons, I stated to make and design jewelry for friends and family. The demand became so great that Rob and I turned it into a business. Where do you hope to see this line in a few years? We both want to see the line exactly where it’s meant to be. Since the jewelry is designed to transform from day to night, the opportunities could be amazing. We both think the product looks best layered and stacked. What 7 living or dead people would you invite to your dinner party? “Okay, Rob, you get to pick 5 and I’ll select two.” Rob: JFK, Winston Churchill, Alexander the Great, Richard Pryor and Prince. Sheryl: Cleopatra and Brigitte Bardot What do you consider you finest accomplishment? Raising our two sons. Our relationship; to work in both acting and our business and how it relates to everyday life and finding that balance. Where would you like to live? We both discuss this subject often. We love living right where we do in Santa Barbara. We love our home. What do you consider your greatest personality trait? We can both agree on always being optimistic and possessing situational resilience. We both love to laugh and enjoy a clever sense of humor. Generosity of the heart is also very important. You have to give, to get back. If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be? Rob: There is not much I would change. Sheryl: I wish I had more time in a day.

THE WRIGHT WAY TO TRAVEL
DOWN ARGENTINE WAY By Lauren and Ian Wright
Darling All, We arrived in Barcelona feeling like dead fish cast upon a lonely beach and left to the mercy of the wind and tide. It was an incredibly stressful journey with missed connections and endless delays, but the travel Gods smiled upon us and all the luggage appeared on the carousel. Celebrity Cruises had booked us into the AC Marriott which was very contemporary with lots of black glass, ash wood, charcoal drapes and crisp white bedding piped in grey. After a lovely dinner in the charming hotel restaurant, 9 pm found us snug beneath the eiderdown which is our usual bedtime, so no jetlag. I awoke with a song on my lips, dressed, breakfasted and performed one of my favorite little travel ceremonies which is attaching the baggage tags
to the baggage and off we went to the pier to embark the Celebrity Reflection for the transatlantic crossing to Buenos Aires! Next day we landed at Cartagena where it was clear and cool enough for the periwinkle suede loafers, I’d bought in Corsica last spring, a periwinkle cashmere over my shoulders and the matching periwinkle gloves that took four months to find. We walked about the quaint old town, one of our favourite cruise ports, bought a little battery-powered stick-on light to use for a night lite in our ship’s cabin and were back aboard for lunch on the aft deck overlooking the Harbor. After a day at sea and through the Straits of Gibraltar under a vault of peerless cerulean, we arrived at Lanzarote and the next day at Gran Canaria. We wandered about in the morning and read (snoozed) on the Promenade Deck in the afternoon. I’m always happiest on the Promenade Deck listening to the waves whoosh against the hull. For the next seven days crossing the Atlantic, we adopted our usual routine, ie: breakfast before rehearsal and then Ian’s lectures. After

lunch, we sat in wicker chairs overlooking the Lawn Club until teatime followed by a deck chair in a secluded spot on the Promenade Deck where one falls under the thrall of the zephyrs of the sea. Soon it was time to dress for cocktails and dinner. On the fifth day we crossed the equator and weather changed from beautifully clear and cool to steaming hot. Our first port of call on the South American continent was Rio de Janeiro which presented quite a spectacular vista as we sailed in at 5 am. The view from the pier was of a steep hill massed from summit to base with every manner of shack and hovel, unspeakable squalor ... the famous barrio of Rio ... a horrible tableau. The Christ The Redeemer statue, visible from everywhere in the city, really is huge and awe-inspiring – worth the drive up the steep mountain roads amid the hordes of tourists. The view from the top of Sugar loaf Mountain is indeed breathtaking, but it was unbearably hot and humid. Everyone says, “Be careful,” and worrying constantly about pickpockets is wearing. The next port of Santos was another steamy day. We stayed aboard the lovely cool and veritably empty ship. After two more days at sea, we arrived at Buenos Aires and checked into our 14th floor penthouse suite at Hotel Claridge. We had originally planned to stay at the Alvear Palace, but my purchase of a divine silver fox coat necessitated the teeniest bit of economy! The once grand hotel is like an old dowager, a bit frayed about the edges with faded paint and the wallpaper separating at the seams in places but it’s clean with wonderful service and our commodious suite had a massive terrace overlooking the city. All the space, drawers, cabinets, sunken jacuzzi tub were pure bliss after the cruise ship cabin. Next day we did a sort of Evita pilgrimage, first the Casa Rosada where I got teary-eyed gazing up at the famous balcony. I was rather addicted to the film, Evita and went to see it over and over back in 1996. Seeing the actual place was very moving. The Recoleta Cemetery was like walking through a dream. I swooned over the spectacularly carved tombs massed side by side and loved peeking into the fantastic grilled doors at the most dazzling little rooms made of marble, gold, crystal chandeliers, exquisite vases and beautiful flowers and elaborate bronze coffins. Of course, I had to see Eva Peron’s tomb but confess to being a bit disappointed as so many others were far more dazzling, surmounted by fabulous winged angels carved in stone. An opera singer with a pianist were practicing in a gorgeous glass and gold gallery at the front entrance, her aria wafting out among the tombs added another dimension of beauty to one of the most fantastic places I’ve ever seen. Lunch at the Panera Rosada, a charming cafe all in pink; even the tables, chairs and umbrellas, was set in a green park across from the cemetery. The nearby Evita Plaza is very tiny, easily overlooked, but with a glorious sculpture of Eva The posh Recoleta neighborhood has amazing shops purveying every luxury imaginable. The Alvear Palace Hotel is grand and glorious to the extreme and definitely the place to stay if you are not “Economizing.” The lobby and a sort of galleria outside are crowded with jewelers offering stupendous pieces and shops with art deco tea services and everything equine for the polo playing aficionados. We dined that night in a very atmospheric restaurant and ordered steaks the waiter insisted were the best thing on the menu. An enormous platter arrived heaped with two slabs of tough and sinewy flesh ... potato salad, rice, green salad and a mountain of excellent French fries topped with fried eggs. We ate only a few bites of the meat and gorged on French fries. We were told the meat was the preferred texture for the locals. Ian said you could have nailed it on your shoes as soles. Before leaving for Barcelona, we watched two of my favourite 1940s films set in Argentina. The Argentine had a bit of a heyday in 1940s Hollywood as the war was raging in Europe and filmmakers looked to South America for an exotic setting. Buenos Aires is very much like, Down Argentine Way, a musical with Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda – light, frothy, sparkling. Conversely, it’s also very much like Gilda with Rita Hayworth, gorgeous, dramatic, dark, dangerous, and brooding. We highly recommend the films and Buenos Aires!

And if that’s not enough; all Chompie’s have full bar service, which is the perfect accompaniment to Sunday Brunch. The portions are huge but not grotesque and the quality of the food is top shelf! A fantastic assortment of prepared green salads, soups and award-winning sandwiches reign supreme. Cold selections arrive crisp and hot items arrive piping hot. Also there are always kosher pickles on the table to whet your appetite. Chompie’s is still family owned. Lovey and Lou Borenstein and their family arrived from Queens, New York, in 1979; bringing with them a treasure trove of old-world recipes and traditions. Chompie’s continues to win countless awards and is often featured on television food and travel segments. If you can’t find something delicious on their menu, you must not be hungry?

Clarissa At just one-year-old, Clarissa is excited for all she has to learn about the world. She is a gorgeous English Coonhound who loves to explore, go on nice long walks and of course, play! The sweet pup is a big fan of fetch, tug-of-war and just flat out doing adorable doggy activities while getting her wiggles out. Clarissa was transferred to the Arizona Humane Society from another shelter in Arizona due to overcrowding.

Brought to the Arizona Humane Society all the way from an overrun shelter in California, beautiful Abby is quite a stunning cat who is sure to turn heads everywhere she goes. The three-year-old Maine Coon kitty cat is a sweet girl who can be a little shy at first but quickly warms up with a few strokes of her soft fur. In the first chapter, we are introduced to Lale Sokolov; a dapper, young man who has been rounded-up like so many of his friends and family in Slovakia. Like those around him; Lale, a Jew, is forcibly sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. But luckily for Lale, he speaks several languages and is extremely handsome and charismatic. He is put to work as a tattooist, permanently marking his fellow prisoners with inked numbers. There is so much more to this novel then a man under horrific and unfortunate imprisonment. Lale Sokolov finds he is able to outsmart his captors. He quickly turns his use of language into a business and through bribery and trust; he feeds the starving, spares people from the gas chambers and relocates his fellow prisoners to less harsh working conditions in the two camps that make up this living nightmare. He also falls in love and is determined to survive his ordeal to one day marry his sweetheart. Heather Morris does a fine job combining factual events with fiction to produce a fine piece of literature that is sure to find its place in history. Though the work is fiction, it is a mesmerizing account of the true evils of war and the triumph of mankind and humanity.
