La Dolce Vita This is how it all started! First Char and Bill Hubble threw open the door of their heart-stopping-hillside- estate the night before the big Trends/TCF Luncheon. Jennifer’s Catering did an outstanding job serving culinary delights for even the most discriminating pallet. Everyone that passed through the magnificent wrought iron doors marveled at not only the magnificent view but also the magnificent group of people gathered for the preparty festivities. It was there that we congratulated not only our new Trendsetters, but also thanked our 1995 Trendsetter Ambassadors for their tireless dedication to the community, while samba music played softly in the background. It was quite an evening and Char and Bill Hubble were fabulous hosts! Early the next morning ladies stepped into high heels, shift dresses and luncheon suits, while gentlemen polished their shoes and tightened their ties for the much anticipated Trends/ TCF luncheon. Since the early 80s, our charities have made the lives of so many underprivileged women and children that much better. We are grateful to the community for your support! The Arizona Biltmore did a splendid job transforming the conference center into a magnificent pallet of soft ivory and gentle beige hues. The White House Design Studio worked their magic and created simple yet breathtaking arrangements. Everyone swooned!

Next Neiman Marcus, our good friend and partner, put on a show-stopping-fashion show. Monique Lhuillier arrived and departed in person with her magnificent fall 2015 collection. You can thank the store’s savvy GM Tim Braun, together with PR czar Lisa Pagel and chic managers B.J. Johnson and Kitty Broderick for making it all come together. People are still talking about the collection on the runway. Yes! It was that extraordinary. Our production manager Margaret Merritt, along with Chris Beckley and Clyde Betts rounded out the fashion, music and stage interworking of the day and they did a splendid job! After lunch and a live auction, put together by Trendsetter Jinger Richardson and her equally beautiful daughter Janell Grady, which raised more money than we should mention; the Trendsetter Ambassadors from 1995 were acknowledged. They were Darlene Keller-Price, Kristy Moore, Linda Surdakowski and Susie Wesley. Jane Bergamo was in the Midwest celebrating her mother’s 100th birthday or she would have made the scene too. You could have heard a pin drop. What a lady! After that we introduced the Trendsetters for 2015. Everyone raced to Neiman Marcus to touch, feel and wear Monique Lhuillier’s collection in

You should also know that The Board of Visitors just celebrated the 100th anniversary of their historical charity ball. And that’s a good thing! As you know they are the oldest and most respected charity in the state. For more than 100 years they have raised more money for our state than any other charity. I think that’s more impressive than anything we could conjure up. What an amazing group of ladies and what an amazing organization. Bravo! We hope you all have a great and safe holiday. 10 Questions for ... Kenny Rogers Interview by Bill Dougherty

Why did you decide to attend Celebrity Fight Night in 1994? My manager suggested it. I wanted to meet Mohammad Ali. I also felt that I could offer something to the charity and to the performers alike. What do you consider your greatest hour professionally? A television special with Ray Charles. Just to be in his presence changed my life. Also my first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Where would you like to live? I live in Atlanta and I like it. It’s not too hot and not too cold. The people are nice here. Besides my entire family is here. It’s been home for the last 20 years. People have urged me to move to Nashville, but I don’t want to start over. Why have you returned to Celebrity Fight Night so often? I love the talent and I so enjoy the new up and comers that are showcased each year. I’m amazed that so many celebrities can commit so far ahead of time. I don’t know where I’ll be tomorrow. I always try to come when I can. This charity has such a great purpose. Reba McEntire alone and her commitment is simply amazing! Remember it’s not how much you make but how much you give back. Who are your heroes? I’ve met the top 5 big entertainers. So I would say my heroes are my wife, my mother and my twin boys, who I hope to take on safari to Africa very soon.

talent. I love recording with Dolly Parton, Kim Carnes and Sheena Easton plus the late Dottie West. Dottie had the ability to live the lyrics she sang. She was one of the greatest talents ever in the Country Music Industry and the first to win a Grammy.

On what occasion do you fib or exaggerate? When the truth doesn’t help. I try to be consistent and try not to exaggerate. What’s your worst habit? Eating sweets! I love ice cream and candy. I even have a candy drawer in my tour bus!

How did you get your start in the music business? My older brother Lelan got me a record deal in New York. One of our first groups was called The Scholars. That was a joke because we were all straight C students. We had some local success however. Every time I moved from point A to point B, things got better and better. Bobby Doyle 3 was another early start in the business for me. So were The New Christy Minstrels, but they wouldn’t let us sing because they didn’t want to pay us royalties, so I left.

What’s the hardest part about your job? Walking – my physical handicaps have started to show up, so I speak the truth about my mobility. Sooner or later age catches up with all of us. I joke about it a lot on stage. Since I don’t drink, I’d never want to be accused of being drunk. Who would you like to record a duet album with living or dead and why? I’d very much like to record with Jennifer Nettles, because she has such tremendous

Linda Pope What is your home town and how long have you lived in the Valley? I was born in Philadelphia, PA but moved outside of Dallas, Texas in high school. I have lived in the Valley for 35 years. In Phoenix society, what 4 people have inspired you? The people in this community who have inspired me would require an entire issue of Trends for me to list. However to answer your question choosing 4, I have decided to list by significant areas those that I feel represent inspiration at its highest level. First, would be my husband, Bill, who has always encouraged me to seek my dreams as he rolled his eyes in jest as he considered my next project. I decided to produce a TV Show with Simon Fuller, write the lyrics of its theme song with no musical background and ask David Foster to put the music to the lyrics. He laughed and then said, “go for it.”

Second, would be all my girlfriends, each and every one of them, who inspire me in every way and every day; who add so much laughter and quality to my life and support that is above and beyond. Thirdly, I feel creativity and its inspiration are so important to making our world better as are the ARTS and for that reason I place Michael Barnard in the category of Creative Inspiration. He is so humble yet so gifted. Fourth, but certainly not least, would be the Spiritual inspiration that in our darkest moments provides light like no other. There are many that I could list here, but I will choose Sara O’Meara for the inspirational Faith she provides in my life and so many others’. What Valley events have you worked on or chaired in the past 5 years The last Valley event that Bill and I Co-Chaired with Erika and Matt Williams, and an amazing Host Committee, was for the SuperBowl, The Big Give Big Game AZ Shines Party. I continue to serve as a Past Chair/Advisor for Heart Ball, help with the Phoenix Theatre Applause Gala as well as the Childhelp Drive the Dream. In 2014 I Co-Chaired with Melani Walton and Christi Warner Beyer, The “Believe” Gala for AZ Science Center and I sit on the Metropolitan Boys and Girls Club Board. Do you have a favorite song and film? My favorite song is ‘I hope you Dance” because it touches all the lessons of life I feel hold value. My favorite film is “Dangerous Beauty,” a true story about a courageous woman who paved a path for women to speak their hearts and touch others. What do you consider your finest hour? A compilation of many hours that have blended our children into a “family” because Love really does conquer all. What 7 people living or dead would you invite to a dinner party? Thomas Jefferson, Kate Middleton, Gene Kelly, Mary, Queen of Scots, Coco Chanel, Leonardo da Vinci, Mary Magdalene. What’s your worst habit? My worst habit is being obsessed with perfection. What’s your motto? My motto is: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

My husband, Chip, and I have served on the Banner MD Anderson Corporate Cabinet. Since 2009 the Phoenix Heart Ball and Currently 2016 Chair Elect, Arizona Women’s Board, SMoCA Mix, Phoenix Applause Gala Chair, National Charity League (with my daughter) and 2008 Chair of Xavier College Preparatory Scholarship Fashion Show. Do you have a favorite song and film? Mary Poppins is my favorite film. Let’s Go Fly A Kite is my favorite song. What’s the best book you’ve read last year? All the Light We Cannot See What do you consider your finest hour? Raising my children. Chester 25, and Caroline 24 What 7 people living or dead would you invite to a dinner party? Gary Danko (Chef at my all time favorite restaurant), Walt Disney, Leonardo Da Vinci, Margaret Thatcher, Coco Chanel, Lucille Ball, and Colin Cowie. And, I would need one more chair because I have to include Chip ... he’s really good at selecting the wine! What’s your worst habit? Driving too fast! What’s your motto? Look for the positive in every situation ... and keep smiling because hopefully it’s contagious.

Life Above and Beyond the Rim What do you consider your finest hour? Having my son is my greatest accomplishment … and winning a blue ribbon with my horse. 10 Questions for ... Monique Lhuillier Please tell us a little bit about your background. I was born in the Philippines. My mother is Spanish/Filipino and my father is French which explains my name. Growing up in the Philippines, I was surrounded by a tight knit family. Fashion was engrained in me at that young age and I knew I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a fashion designer. I chose to move to Los Angeles and attended the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising. When did you know you wanted to become a clothing designer? At 16 years of age, the delightful fantasy of special occasions, especially weddings, began inspiring me. While studying at FIDM, this inclination toward eveningwear directed me to my niche. After graduation, my search for my own wedding gown led me to launch my brand, which initially focused on bridal. What were some of your early influences? My mother was my first source of style inspiration. I was constantly in awe of her fashion sense. She had a children’s clothing line and dressed my brothers and sisters in matching outfits. My father is a successful business man with a strong work ethic. His diligence sparked my entrepreneurial side and helped me to establish a foundation for my business. What was your inspiration for the 2015 Fall Collection? My Fall 2015 Collection plays on the juxtaposition of masculine versus feminine for effortless sophistication. Fluid silhouettes inspired by the seductive 1920s are contrasted by modern,

What other design categories interest you (architecture, home décor, etc.)? My own line has expanded to include tabletop, fine jewelry and accessories. I’m also influenced greatly by architecture and I collect contemporary art.

Who’re your favorite designers and why? I love all the design greats: Valentino, YSL, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy. They inspire me in my own designs. However more current designers like Celine’s Phoebe Philo and Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci have really infused a modern take on fashion with a very interesting point of view. If you weren’t a clothing designer, what would you be doing? I would be an interior designer.

What’s one item every woman should have in her closet? Everyone needs a fabulous little black dress that is flattering and can be styled numerous ways. A pair of great shoes is a must in any woman’s closet. Any predictions for 2016 trends? I think you will continue to see body conscious silhouettes in 2016. THE PHOENIX COUNTRY CLUB Many of you may not know that famed architect Ralph Haver designed and built this marvel of architecture. But you probably did know that for the last several years, the American Cancer Society has used this opulent venue for Picnic Under the Stars.

The Board of Visitors The Board of Visitors, founded in 1908, is having its 100th Annual Charity Ball, the longest running philanthropic event in the state! Arizona was merely three years old when the first Ball was held. Guests arrived by horse and buggy and were served dinner prepared by the members. In 1938, daughters and granddaughters of members were asked to sell flowers at the Ball. During WWII, men in uniform were admitted to the Ball for half-price. In 1956, the formal presentation of Flower Girls was adopted. That tradition continues as 43 Flower Girls were presented at the 100th Annual Charity Ball on April 18, 2015 at The Camelback Inn.

David and Christine Watson are true pioneers in the skincare industry. In 2011, they founded mybody, an advanced probiotic skincare line that offers targeted therapies for a multitude of skin types and problematic conditions. We caught up with these two this month to learn more about them and their mission. What inspired you to start an advanced probiotic skincare line? David: We created an advanced probiotic skincare line because we wanted those affected with problematic skin conditions to have a targeted solution that yields profoundly beautiful results without causing stress to the skin. Christine: We also wanted to provide products that protect and nurture the skin and the immune system from the inside out. What is your favorite thing about your job?
