LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to May The telephone lines at Jennifer’s Catering must have been ringing off the hook after our party! This year we moved the Trends Charitable Fund/Trends Magazine annual “No Agenda” party permanently to our home. After a lengthy 6-year renovation; the mid-century Paradise Valley home, which was built by a renowned Palm Springs architect, was ready for the big bash. Sadly, the architect who designed the house had little success in Phoenix with his mod designs and returned to the California desert. Anyway, Trendsetter Melissa Turner came up with the concept last year at the Western Spirit Museum; before the house was done. We wanted to celebrate all our Fabulous Phoenicians and Trendsetters for everything they do to make our community such a better place for so many. Let’s face it; most of the time you attend cocktail parties in the Valley; you are asked to make a donation to something. It was nice to just have a party to say thank you. Maggie Heiser and Lauren Mary of Agency Arizona fame modeled lovely fashions from Kiss Me Kate boutique and magnificent jewelry by Linda Lee Pratico poolside. Dennis Thompson, florist to the stars of White House Design created exceptional flora and American Valet parked more than 89 cars! It was so nice to see so many people we had not seen out and about for a while. Many merrymakers stayed well past 10 pm. You should have been there!

The Valley’s top chefs joined to give 1,000 steaks provided by Celebrity Fight Night for the Homeless at St. Vincent de Paul. It was the 10-year anniversary celebration of the weekly Never Give Up program founded by CFN Chairman Jimmy Walker. Jimmy invites celebrities, athletes, and business leaders to speak at SVDP providing encouraging messages every Monday morning. When Jimmy asks people to support a great cause, they just want to help, which happened when chefs Chris Bianco, Vincent Guerithault, Marc Lupino, and Mark Tarbell jumped at the chance to “Cook Steaks” for the Homeless! Spring was at its finest when the 2nd annual “Vino con Stelle” was held on Friday, April 13th in the courtyard of Wrigley Mansion, benefitting Gateway for Cancer Research. Hosted by Richard J. Since this publication relaunched our best dressed list last year, we have received countless suggestions as to who should be on it and who should be elevated to Hall of Fame status each year. You’ve probably figured out that the competition for the deserved accolade, especially in our ladies’ division, is extremely competitive. But remember there are a lot of dapper gentlemen out there too. This year we add four lovely ladies to the list. Two who currently grace the list will be moved to the iconic Hall of Fame status and two very handsome, natty, gentlemen dressers will be upgraded as well. Two gentlemen have also been awarded their new title. Sorry folks you have to go to page 14 to see who made the grade. Thanks to everyone who gave us such great people this year. We need your suggestions again at the end of next season. As the non-stop social season ended, my wife and I had the opportunity of dropping by the cocktail reception for Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation’s Arizona Awards Dinner. Our Fabulous Phoenician, Sue Glawe, was honored along with Diane and Dan Nelson. We ran into so many people we know. Stevie Eller stole the show in burgundy chiffon that flowed as she walked the stately cocktail reception. Everyone swooned! But the most touching part

of our drive-by came when Diane Halle walked in the door. She took my breath away! But then again she always does. Diane, along with the rest of the Halle family, was there to honor the memory and greatness of a decorated Marine and a great American; Bruce Halle. Bruce was one of the finest men this community has ever seen and will ever see. The life changing things he did together with his bewitchingly beautiful wife will be felt for decades, if not centuries. No better man deserved the posthumous tribute he received from the Marine Corps that evening than he did. I’m glad we were there As we bid you farewell until late October, the entire staff of this publication and the Trends Charitable Fund Board wishes all of you a safe and wonderful summer. We hope to see you early next season at an Evening of Trends on October 13th at Montelucia in Paradise Valley. Chao! BAD SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: Evidently a loud and prosperously loaded socialite believes rules simply don’t apply. At a recent luncheon which honored a very famous person, the lady in question stormed the photography line. She ignored the demands of security and bullied her way once again to the front. This is also the same woman who sneaks into ballrooms and switches table number stands and rearranges place card settings. Remember the help will always talk, especially to us…

7 QUESTIONS FOR ... Jeff Mastro How did you get into the restaurant business? My father got my brother and me started in the business when we were kids and we both fell in love with the business quickly. I could not imagine doing anything else. Why was the Mastro’s Group sold? The sale of Mastro’s was a wonderful business opportunity that was offered to us. After much consideration, we all decided that the timing was right for us and our company. How did you come up with the concept for Steak 44 and Dominick’s? The inspiration for these concepts came from our family’s many years of experience in the steakhouse business, listening to our guests and traveling all over the world seeing what people like and finding ways to make the experience better. Steak 44, as well as Steak 48, was our foray into the more modern steakhouse which guests have been clamoring for. How did you manage to create such verve in these two new restaurants? Our concepts are an experience; a vibrant, warm, contemporary setting that is both energized and intimate; offering our guests a unique environment and menu that has all of the tenants of timeless steakhouses and goes beyond to offer more than steak with interesting side dishes and appetizers with world class luxury personal service. But most of all, it is about our culture of consideration and our family connection to every conceivable detail. This is a very personal business and we believe our

The 45th Annual Lou Grubb Friends Fore Golf event was a “hole in fun,” as more than 250 golfers hit the greens and teed off in support of Barrow Neurological Institute and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. Fun games and challenges entertained the players throughout the two courses at JW Marriott Camelback Golf Club. The golf tournament kicked off with a helicopter ball drop, as hundreds of golf balls purchased by

raffle players were dropped from a chopper, and the owner of the ball that landed closest to the hole won a cash prize. During the awards program, Caroline and Christopher Hoeye were honored with the Lou and Evelyn Grubb Spirit Award for their generous support of the event. The Lou and Evelyn Grubb Spirit Award recognizes individuals who mirror the philanthropic passion of the award’s namesakes.

This year things got even bigger and better. M Catering made sure everyone was well fed and a hip rock band played until dawns early light. The pARTy in the Garden On Saturday, November 3, 2018, Phoenix Art Museum will be the glamorous site for The pARTy in the Garden, the major fundraiser for the Museum, which will kick-off its 60th anniversary. The elegant and festive evening is being chaired by Amy Cohn, Ellen Katz, Margot Knight and Meredith von Arentschildt; all trustees of the Museum. With 500 guests expected, this magical night begins with cocktails in the Dorrance Sculpture Garden, moves to a seated and served dinner by M Catering in Cummings Great Hall and ends with dessert and dancing back in the Garden. Of special note; the evening will honor Michael Crow, President of Arizona State University. Please tell our readers how this evening came about. Phoenix Art Museum has held a major evening fundraiser since its new building addition was completed in 1996 and even several years before then. We have tried various formats but are returning to the tried and true evening of cocktails, dinner and dancing. It is not black tie but cocktail attire. Our guests, especially the men, seem to prefer that. And why is the evening so important? Because it raises a significant amount of funds for our wonderful exhibitions and educational outreach programs throughout the Valley. It is the Museum’s mission to provide first-hand exposure to the arts for our diverse community, but it takes money to do this. Our Board is extremely committed to the Museum’s financial health and we are lucky to have many additional friends, corporations and foundations helping us fulfill our mission. The evening also provides a lively introduction to new people who attend as guests of our Board and Steering Committee. So, we are both fund raising and friend raising.

How did you decide to honor Michael Crow? Is there a connection between the Museum and ASU? Our evening has not traditionally had an honoree, but Michael has promoted arts and culture both personally and through various departments and outreach at ASU, so it seems fitting to recognize his amazing efforts. ASU and Phoenix Art Museum both play integral roles in our community. Education and the arts are so important! Michael has envisioned an & quot;arts corridor&quot; downtown and, knowing him, it will no doubt become a reality soon. What are some of the most important outreach programs of the Museum? We engage hundreds of school children every day and, in many cases, we also provide buses to bring the students. Since arts programs have been minimized in the school system due to budget cuts, our institution tries to pick up the slack to expose school children to other worlds through art and creativity. Last year, we also served another 13,000 people of all ages through outreach to other facilities, including senior centers. We also have a program for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers at the Museum, as well as a vibrant teen program. So, you can see, we try to reach every age group. Darlings All, Recently, we breakfasted on the terrace the first morning warm enough to dine alfresco here at 5,000 feet in the mountains of Reno. I sipped my Earl Grey, trying to ignore the voice of a television news anchor wafting through the open French doors, droning on endlessly about our President’s latest dilemma. With the media constantly telling us the sky is falling, my spirits had sunk so low, I’d begun to feel like a dead fish cast upon a lonely beach and left to the mercy of the wind and tides. Those of you who follow our chronicles will remember that Lauren is never happier than when her well shod feet are treading the Promenade Deck in the ocean swells, breathing in the zephyrs of the sea. That particular cocktail of salt air and diesel fuel is more intoxicating than anything mixed up with ice in a silver shaker and served in a long-stemmed glass. Daydreaming about swanning down an ocean liner’s grand staircase, swathed in something sinuous and beaded was the only thing keeping me from sinking into a dreadful lassitude and taking no further interest in life. Just when it seemed I was neck deep in the soup with no hope of striking for shore, our agent called to say he’d booked Ian on Celebrity Reflection’s transatlantic crossing where Ian would lecture about his book, On The Brink Of Fame, Pop Stars In The Swinging 60s, available on Amazon.com, (forgive the shameless plug)

With all immediate worries becoming increasingly evanescent; my thoughts were consumed with packing which I consider one of life’s greatest joys. Even though the airlines now charge for even one checked bag and economizing is fashionable if not downright necessary – I simply refuse to scrimp on luggage. A few years ago, I told you about some spiteful wag at an airport check-in counter who looked askance at my excess baggage saying, “In this economy, you should be ashamed or at least afraid to travel with so much Vuitton.” Looking at her as if she were a two headed monster, I resisted the desire to say “Let them eat cake.” You see; I had been collecting the Vuitton since the 70s and persuaded myself to believe the nicks and scratches, small rips and gouges gave it a patina of age that bespoke travels around the world. Now – close scrutiny and an honest introspection; made me admit the beloved luggage just looked old and worn out, quite similar to the reflection in that beastly 10x mirror on my dressing table. Without a backwards thought, I got out the sewing machine and scissors; tore the luggage apart and used the best bits to line the trunk of the Jag, then bought quantities of new luggage. If only the visage was as easy to refresh as the luggage. After much flurry of rolling and folding, amidst drifts of tissue paper and accompanied by my long-standing packing soundtrack – Harry James and Helen Forrest – we arrived at the pier with six pieces of

the new navy and brown crocodile luggage, fur coat over my shoulders and a sheaf of white lilies on my arm. To me the pier is one of the most exciting places on earth with the stevedores shouting, expectant looks on everyone’s faces, taxis honking, boats hooting, and drays filled with stacks of luggage all lovingly packed with well thought out wardrobes. All this is a prelude to 14 days in the lap of luxury where the only serious decision you have to make is where to dine. I always like to stop for a moment at that point on the gangway where it abuts the ship. There’s a narrow aperture through which you can see the water below and the immense wall of the ship rising up and out of view. This will be your last glimpse of land life for eight days, then you step into the golden embrace of the ship, the whistle rents the earth with a deafening blast and the giant vessel heads out into the Atlantic swells.

If you will take the word of one who would not deceive you, the Reflection is vast, breathtaking and surprisingly unique for a midpriced line. Every public room is lofty and extraordinary. The Library soars to the height of two decks overlooking a several deck-high atrium with banks of glass elevators and a live Ficus tree in a giant gimbaled planter suspended 50 feet above the floor. It would take several pages to describe the wonders of the Reflection, a truly spectacular ship. With several different specialty restaurants to choose from; we favored The Opus main dining room where old Hollywood glamour meets a stunning contemporary design composed of a symphony of white and silver highlighted by a dramatic, two-story glass wine tower and a fabulous glass staircase down which to make a Grande Descente! Formal nights have been abandoned and replaced with “Evening Chic.” I do miss seeing everyone in formal evening dress and especially miss wearing the beaded gowns I mentioned earlier. During the day, almost everyone was dressed in ultra casual clothes more suited

Typical cruise ship extravaganzas, interspersed with brilliant headliner entertainers, perform in the gargantuan Celebrity Theatre where Ian’s lectures were a huge success – so much so that he had to repeat them all. His finale performance was his personal biography of Paul McCartney; “The Genius I Know,” the last picture of Paul, 20 feet high on a soaring screen. As the closing song, Hey Jude started, many people came up on stage to sign along ... “Ian’s Beatles Choir.” Celebrity’s beyond the podium speakers are a big draw for transatlantic passengers. This voyage, our dear friend Melinda Bates gave fascinating talks about her eight years in the Clinton White House as a special advisor to the President and Jim Kennedy from NASA regaled us all with behind the scenes stories of space exploration. After a smooth eight-day crossing of the Atlantic from Fort Lauderdale, we entered the Mediterranean with port calls at Malaga where I was happy to see shaded snakeskin shoes are back in style (since the early 1990s) and in all the shops. In Cartagena we maundered the cobbled streets, popping in an out of beautiful shops selling exquisitely made men’s clothing at reasonable prices. Ian bought a truly gorgeous linen blazer in Mediterranean blue with cobalt window pane check for 129 euros. Barcelona was as usual, far too crowded with four massive cruise ships in port. We spent the day on the Boardwalk, lined with shops and cafés, that runs along the seaside and only a short taxi ride from the pier. Most cruise passengers spend the day swarming on Las Ramblas or seeing the Gaudi architecture, so the Boardwalk is blissfully quiet; with locals building extravagant sand castles on the beach, relaxing in cafes or just promenading. Our favourite port was Ajaccio, Corsica which; aside from being the birthplace of Napoleon; is the quintessential Mediterranean port with a fantastic yacht marina and enchanting villas along serpentine Continued on next page

cobbled streets overlooking the white sand and turquoise sea. Since Corsica is part of France, the shops were dependably filled with chic clothes and divine shoes. I bought a pair of Loding of Paris, velvety suede loafers in periwinkle blue for 135 euro. The voyage ended at Civitavecchia – the port for Rome which is located about 90 minutes from Rome city centre. Celebrity provides transfer coaches direct to Ostiense Station, which we think is by far the easiest way to get into the city. This time we stayed at Pepoli9 which is a villa with six suites all beautifully decorated in contemporary black, white and silver with touches of purple. Breakfast is included and served in your suite. Lunch, tea and dinner are served on very pretty Villory and Boch china in the bijoux “Living Room.” The staff is delightful and eager to please. Pepoli9; which overlooks the extensive ruins of the Baths of Caracalla; is located in an extremely quiet, leafy neighborhood filled with mansions and embassies surrounded by vast crumbling walls; behind which Peacocks screech. It’s half an hour easy walk to the Coliseum and about a 10-euro taxi fare to any of the Eternal City’s attractions.

We’ve been to Rome so many times, yet neither of us has bothered to see the ancient monuments since the 1990s. Pondering on the fact that life is fleeting, and we may never again see the monuments, I quashed my natural snobby instinct to avoid anything touristy and braved the incredible seething mass of humanity at every location. Even so, the Coliseum is undergoing massive restoration and the efforts are quite amazing and definitely worth seeing! One day, we spent hours walking through the seemingly endless and glorious Borgehese Gardens followed by a truly nonpareil lunch at Harry’s Bar on Via Veneto. Sadly, most of the formerly divine shops on Via Veneto are closed; having relocated to Via Condotti. We spent hours lingering at Café Tucci on the Piazza Navona admiring the beautiful architecture surrounding the square and listening to a marvelous string quartet playing near the fountain. Each evening, it was heaven returning to the quietude of Villa Pepoli9 after the crowds in Rome.

Our final evening, we sauntered along the Via Condotti admiring the shop windows of every famous jeweler and designer. It was like the adverts in Vogue magazine coming to life. As the sun was about to set; we worked our way through the hoards on the Spanish Steps and made it to the top just as the sky was streaked with orange and purple, the bells in multitudes of church towers began to ring and the nightingales in the umbrella pines were singing. It has great atmosphere, incredible service and delicious food. We discovered it by word of mouth and the vibe is so unique. It is by far the best new restaurant on the 7th St. corridor. All of the pastas are handmade and literally everything about this place will make you count down the days until your next visit!

We started with the Shrimp Scampi appetizer: sautéed jumbo shrimp tossed with white wine, lemon, butter, fresh basil and tomatoes. It was followed by the Romana salad made with homemade croutons, Caesar dressing and parmesan cheese. Our entrées were: the Seafood Fettuccini tossed with brandy lobster cream sauce, sautéed jumbo shrimp, jumbo scallops, mussels and fresh tomatoes plus the Chicken parmesan topped with marinara sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil served with house made spaghetti. It was all delicious with each and every bite. The owner, Danny Quinn, also stopped by the table to see how everything was. Excellent service and attention to detail did not go unnoticed. They recently added lunch and brunch to the menu and also have an excellent happy hour. All in all, an excellent and exciting addition to the neighborhood and we are anxious to return. It is located in the space that was formerly Okra and it has a fun and lively vibe. Be sure and check it out. You won’t be disappointed!

Phoenix investigative reporter Joya Bonner, who previously cracked the case in Funeral Hot Dish, has returned to the Valley where she dispenses her sharp detective knowledge and wit. This time we are taken to the underbelly of society in a circle of sex trafficking and mass corruption. Joya is now in hot pursuit of any evidence she can find to link her missing 15-year old honorary niece to another case of a missing teen back in her home town in North Dakota. Like Funeral Hot Dish, thedeadgirlinthevacantlot is full of spine-tingling twists and drama that make it not only an excellent read but a very tough book to put down. Jana Bommersbach delivers another true great detective novel. Although the characters, with the exception of two, are fictionalized; you will immediately recognize vast similarities with many famous Phoenicians. Do not miss this book.
