La Dolce Vita The Season October to May By now you’ve probably figured out that we’re in racing mode? The season has wasted little time in getting started with a crash of social obligations and tons of merriment. In the 21 years that I have been with this publication, I like to take a step back every year and look at the ever-changing pieces on the chess board. When I joined Trends in 1994, the players were simple. Empire builders, who had married young, built prosperous careers and became hugely successful in philanthropy. They were unaffected people who entertained and opened their nice but not oversized or garish homes for events and receptions. These were people who believed in changing the community for the better. This pledge still holds true today but the people and the landscape have greatly changed. At several recent parties I’ve noticed the May/December romances seem to have taken over the social scene. Stunningly beautiful young ladies with far older husbands have become quite the norm. It reminds me of my Balboa Bay Club days in Newport Beach when I was in college in the late 1980s. I guess it took some time to catch on in the Valley. There was a time when the only couple resembling this was a once-high-profile gentleman who left his equally high-profile and much-adored wife for an inconvenient woman! Together the man and his new wife tried in vain to make a splash on

the social scene, but they quickly realized they weren’t exactly welcome and didn’t stay. Once upon a time, the calling card at social affairs was simply good manners and lofty conversations. Today that has been replaced by a suit of armor consisting of Hermès handbags and gold-plated and sometimes real Chanel jewelry. We all know that these are magnificent accessories made world-famous by the likes of Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy and many others. But do these items need to be so in our faces? Remember they were always carried by the well-to-do but were seldom, if ever, mentioned or placed in someone’s clear view. Last time I checked it was not good manners to leave your pocketbooks on the table or make them the focal point of conversations. You get the picture? Several years ago I got into a load of trouble. Several long-time advertisers at The Borgata called me, furious that I had stated that the extraordinary boutique mall was headed for demolition. I’ve always fact checked everything that goes into this publication. I had tangled with the same management company at our old offices at Hilton Village, now a CVS Pharmacy. I knew they had no problem Continued on page 10

La Dolce Vita – Continued from page 9 lying to your face. Since Westcor, the once-mighty and respected management company had sold to the out-of-state firm, nothing mattered anymore. Everything had its price no matter what its heritage in our beloved Valley. Now Biltmore Fashion Park is making news. I’ve been told by several previous tenants that are long-time advertisers that the same owners who torn down The Borgata have similar plans for Biltmore Fashion Park. Evidently, the east end of the mall will eventually be demolished and replaced with midrise condominium towers. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. Once the most affluent mall in the state and certainly still the most beautiful, it has undergone massive changes in the last decade. Most of the toney shops left for the air-conditioned but strangely merchandised sister mall Scottsdale Fashion Square. I’ve also heard that Fashion Square is now one of the largest attractions in our state! Although I don’t suspect Biltmore Fashion Park is doomed, I firmly believe that it will someday be a mixed-use space, with a showcase of many restaurants, single-family residences and a small smattering of shops. I also heard that Saks Fifth Avenue, who was not at all pleased with last year’s holiday décor in the mall, was told by management that if they weren’t happy, they too could move. This is the grand and beautiful store that opened the mall in the space now occupied by Brooks Brothers and Ralph Lauren back in 1963. How nice!

No one is really sure if Barney’s New York will remain at Scottsdale Fashion Square. It’s also no secret that Dillard’s would love to divide their oversized store in the same mall in half. For those of you who visited South Coast Plaza (the most successful mall in America), know that Bullock’s did just that in the 1980s. They successfully split their store in half, giving an equal percentage to I. Magnin & Co. Maybe that’s where Saks Fifth Avenue might be headed? Stay tuned there’s always more… In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That heartbreak seems to be inevitable for one of the most beautiful ladies on the scene. That a woman who has totally reinvented her past might want to change her ways and start being nice to her help; remember they always talk. That the social community has grown tired of monetary asks, screaming live auctions and bidding paddles at social affairs – just raise the ticket price, people just want to enjoy the event. That In Cocktail Polo News you should know: an overdone woman who blew off one of the greatest catches now finds herself without any prospects. The grass is not always greener, darling. That the big resorts may be getting together in a collusion-like manner to give the social community a small amount of event dates in favor of larger conventions. Don’t forget the social world put these hotels on the map long before conventions ever did. Now you’re all caught up for the next 15 minutes …

A few questions for … Andrea Bocelli Interviewed by Bill Dougherty What’s the hardest part about your job? It has never been difficult for me to study with the necessary perseverance and discipline, nor to maintain the rigor of an athlete before my concerts. To leave home is for me a great sacrifice. My wandering life, with my luggage always ready, is far from my character. You might not believe it, but temperamentally, I am a homebody ... When I have to get on a plane and cross the ocean, leaving my family at home, it is like reopening an old wound.

Why did you decide to partner with Celebrity Fight Night in Italy? One day fate would have it that I met Jimmy Walker in the elevator of a New York hotel. Little by little, as our friendship was growing, my relationship also was developing with Celebrity Fight Night. Celebrity Fight Night has been an extraordinary reality for more than two decades in the United States. We hope we will make it a tradition here in my country of Italy too. What does Muhammad Ali mean to you? Muhammad has been an icon for at least three generations. He is a universal beacon of courage and civil engagement. Our first meeting was at his home. I went there, together with Jimmy Walker, for his wife Lonnie’s birthday. What I saw in front of me was that irreducible athlete, exhausted but not defeated by disease, I remember him breaking the silence. “Sing for me,” he said. With enormous joy I honored his request by dedicating to him an Italian melody a cappella with my voice breaking from emotion. Then we became friends and I am proud to support, in my small way, the social struggles he brings forward. What do you consider your greatest hour professionally? That I have never stopped studying and deepening the art of singing. That every concert is important, every stage gives me emotion. Who are your heroes? My greatest hero in music has always been, Franco Corelli. Hearing his voice has marked my destiny. Corelli represents my ideal tenor.

Who would you like to record a duet album with living or dead and why? I have sung a duet with young Ariana Grande. She is an idol for young people all around the world (including my children) and she is really full of talent. She is a true artist. How did you get your start in the music business? The path of my artistic career is a fairly unusual one. At the beginning I reached international fame as a pop interpreter. I reached fame later, when I was more than thirty five years of age and was already starting to earn a living as a lawyer. I had to rise through the ranks and many doors were closed to me. The public has met my exhibitions with sincere enthusiasm but the world of entertainment did not know how to assess me. They thought my voice was out of fashion and therefore had no future. Fortunately what happened afterwards validated my tenacity.

White Shirt Exhibition The Phoenix Art Museum recently opened its much anticipated The White Shirt According to Gianfranco Ferre’. The museum was kind enough to invite us to interview Rita Airaghi the fame director of the Ferre’ Foundation. Here’s what this great and very witty lady had to say.

is the true architecture of the white shirt. It’s not only simple but also infinite. It will last forever! Cotton created it; therefore it is a gift from nature. Mr. Ferre’ used story boards to create his shirts rather than photos or one simple sketch. The shirt tells the story even today.

Who inspired Gianfranco Ferre’s famed white shirt? Everything from the purity of blue skies to cultural visits around the world has influenced the white shirt. Even actresses such as Ava Gardner in the film Mogambo and she probably didn’t even realize she was making a fashion statement.

What do you consider the greatest decade for fashion? The 1950s was romantic and elegant. The 60s was wild and became even architectural later in the decade. But the 1980s was the greatest. It was the last hurrah before early 1990s grunge ruined the industry forever. The 80s was bold, avant-garde and beautiful. Everyone still dressed in almost every walk of life. Now it’s all gone.

Who do you consider the 3 greatest fashion designers? Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and Giorgio Armani What is so important about a white shirt? It simply serves as a challenge. You can wear it every day and change one thing and it never looks the same again. What type of legacy do you hope the Ferre’ Foundation leaves? The legacy

How would you rate the 3 best countries in the world of fashion? France is still at the top. Italy would fall in second place. Maybe wealthy ladies from India as third place? Great Britain has a certain style too, but it’s very Royal Family. So I guess they really don’t count. But they do, however, still look very nice. Tennis shoes and back packs are catching up with the entire world sadly. It’s not just an American thing now. Unfortunately it’s a global look. That makes me sad. What is your forecast for fashion? It’s over! Women’s Wear Daily has been eclipsed by social media. Now we have fashion blogs that are written by people who know nothing about the industry and people listen to them. It’s dreadful! There are no more true fashion critics, just Instagram, blogs and websites. Now fashion magazine editors think they are celebrities. The white shirt or the black dress? You need both. That’s really it. They both can take you around the world. All you need are great accessories to go with each and nothing more.

WORLD WAR II VINTAGE Everyone was inspired by the era surrounding the events when America entered the anti-Nazi effort. Videos brought the historical meetings between Sir Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt to life. The ballroom was filled with the voice of Churchill.

DINNER AT THE WHITE HOUSE The JW Mariott Camelback Inn recreated the five course dinner which was served to the world leaders. White House Design Studio even suspended a magnificent crystal chandelier from the ceiling. Candelabra and white flowers added to the splendor.

If you haven’t been to any other of Lenny Rosenberg’s creations, then please make your way over to his recently renovated, expanded and delicious Taco’s And Tequilieria Mexx 32 on 32nd St. and Camelback. He is the master of the hip and always delicious Delux Burger also in the same location that now serves sushi and has a very loyal following. His Revo Burrito concept was expanded and is truly a custom experience not only in culinary ways but architecturally as well. When first entering, there is a huge & beautiful chandelier and custom lighting throughout. The night we were there ,the next day they were installing a glass enclosure for the bar area that would separate the diners from the bar experience but yet still have a sleek and intimate feel to it. Everything in there was made custom for the restaurant. There are also doors that open up to an expansive patio that will be great when our summer finally comes to an end.

First up was the Cochise Farms Green Chile Cheese Crisp served with a side of guacamole and sour cream. It was delicious and light enough to still be able to enjoy all of the other food we had just ordered! With the Cheese Crisp we had a trio of salsas, and the house made guacamole. It was delicious with just the right amount of flavor and texture. Not too chunky and not too blended. Their Signature 32nd St. Tacos are made with house made yellow corn or flour tortillas. You can add beans and rice to any

Anyone who knows anything about Holly wood history knows that talent agent Sue Mengers was a force to be reckoned with. A secretary with William Morris, she believed she was destined for better things than short hand, typing pools and 30 minute cafeteria lunches. So in the early 1960s she got the agency to go out on a limb and she became recognized as the first female talent agent in Hollywood. Known for her cut throat and often vulgar approach, Sue Mengers was a lady who just didn’t give a dam. A diminutive little fixture, she was able to always make an entrance at any A scale Hollywood party. Peering out of oversized granny glasses in flowing silk caftans and teetering on 4 inch stilettos, this combined with her blonde Sassoon power

bob and ever present cigarette, people knew who she was the second she walked in. During her tenure she captivated Hollywood and compiled a list of almost every A list and Oscar winning celebrity imaginable. Everything she touched turned to gold. But then the roaring 80s reared its ugly corporate head and the film industry noted for its creativity became more about the bottom line. Sue finally bowed out and retired, choosing to give dinner parties in her much photographed Mid-Century Modern home in Bel-Air. She got the last laugh and became the industry’s ultimate hostess. Brian Kellow does a remarkable job dissecting this complex and often lovable lady. Unfortunately there probably will never be

another Sue Mengers. Corporate greed managed to change all the players in this once glamorous industry. Anyone remotely interested in the film industry should read this book. It’s full of salacious gossip and never ending name dropping from an era when celebrities mattered.
