Remembering ... Cheryl and Jeff Fine By Bill Dougherty

If you were to look up the word “fun” in the dictionary, chances are it might just say “see Cheryl and Jeff Fine.” Sadly this ultra glamourous couple passed away within months of one another from long and very quiet illnesses over the long hot summer. Several years before I joined the staff of this publication, I had the opportunity to meet the extraordinary Fines at the home of my I. Magnin & Co. colleague Kay Berry. I knew they were extremely important to the community. I had seen Cheryl in our store on countless occasions both in the property now occupied by the Cheese Cake Factory and our second location, now Saks Fifth Avenue. Cheryl was one of the most beautifully dressed women in all of Arizona and her commitment to the philanthropic world was boundless. She made the Trendsetter list the very first year it debuted in 1985. The ten ladies were called “Fashionable Phoenicians.” Whenever you were with Chery and Jeff, you were sure to have a great time. They had the ability to create intimate salons with poets, writers, artists and a slew of chic socialites. Their combined energy seemed to feed off one another. They had both done so much to make our community such a better place in the world of fine arts, music and health-related charities. They remained down to earth. The Fines were always more interested in talking about you then themselves. Poolside and charity ball conversations lasted until dawn’s early light. You sensed their understated greatness and they both shared the most intoxicating laughter. When I purchased Trends in late 2000, Cheryl asked me to meet her for lunch at the Ritz-Carlton. Since we shared the bond of having both been in the airline industry, she felt comfortable with telling me her thoughts. Smashing in a navy YSL suit, Cheryl lit her trademark cigarette and said, “Take all that stuff out of Trends and turn it into a cross between Vanity Fair and Town & Country, that’s what people want to read.” I would meet her again and again there for lunch. Cheryl’s ideas flowed like water. She was an amazing visionary and a great friend! I know Cheryl and Jeff are in Heaven and holding one of their great salons like God has never seen. The heavens are spellbound by their presence. They will be missed.

LA DOLCE VITA

The Season October to May

By Bill Dougherty Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer. While the majority of you were somewhere working on your tans on far away beaches; Vicki Vaughn, this year’s Evening of Trends chairman and her committee, worked throughout the summer. Our big event will be held on October 13th at Montelucia and they have made T-Gen our beneficiary for the next two years or more. The Trends Charitable Fund Focus is now on rare childhood diseases and ovarian cancer. The switch for the TCF has received overwhelming support. The community has reached out to them and to the magazine with countless cards, letters and emails in favor of the groundbreaking decision. We hope together we can make a difference and at the same time spread the message of this fine genomics research center. Much more on this and a special thank you to our community in our December issue. It’s no secret that we have had a wonderful relationship with Neiman Marcus and Vincent on Camelback for many many years. They have been so supportive of the publication and the countless charitable organizations with whom we work. So; the other day Kitty Broderick, the stores savvy PR czar, Aimee Josette of Fine Apparel and Dwight Giesse, my friend from our I. Magnin & Co days and the manager of

Certified Diamonds

Precious Jewelry, all headed to the home of 1985 Heart Ball chair, Harriet Friedland. Stop me if you’ve already heard this, Harriett happens to be Phoenix’s answer to the famed New York socialite Babe Paley. She’s as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside. Anyway, the shoot orchestrated by 2018 Heart Ball chair Carolyn Jackson and her Executive Leadership Team brought us a bit of a spin this year. While the participants were all featured in ball gowns as you’ve seen on the cover, the ladies decided to sport corporate wear for the inside pages. I was reluctant to acquiesce to this but then again how could anyone not acquiesce to Carolyn Jackson. You get the picture? Famed Australian jeweler designer Margot McKinney showcased some of the most heart-stopping jewelry imaginable. Everybody swooned! When the shoot finally wrapped later that day and all the treats from Vincent’s were obliterated, I went to retrieve my car. All I could think of was the television show Dallas. The fictional Ewing family drove autos with identical license plates. Remember; “Ewing 1,” Ewing 2” and on and on. Well, Mrs. Jackson has done the same thing for past Heart Ball chairs with proceeds from her Driven Hearts inspiration benefiting the American

Heart Association. Everywhere you looked you saw “PHBC 50,” PHBC 49” and “PHBC 25.” The plate indicates Phoenix Heart Ball Chair and the year in the sequence of the 59 years they chaired the ball. Where are Sue Ellen and J.R. Ewing when we need them? Helen Rogers has died. She was the iconic model turned famed owner of Plaza Three modeling school and talent agency and later the creator of IMTA (International Model and Talent Agency). Plaza 3, named after a small and very elite telephone exchange name in New York, shot to great fame in the 1970s and 80s as The Valley’s premiere modeling agency. Ms. Rogers was a true visionary. Her trademark platinum bob and Chanel handbag, which was surgically attached to her shoulder, were her calling cards throughout the industry. Although she would leave Phoenix after the subsequent sale of IMTA, she was occasionally spotted in Greta Garbo-like incognito in upscale eateries and shops. She will be missed. A very special thank you to all who have sent texts and emails regarding my first appearance on the Seth Leibshon Show. No, I’m not a political commentator. I’m the king of useless trivia! On my first appearance, we discussed films from 1967 and the Academy Awards show of 1963. For film historians, 1967 would prove to be the most incredible year for hallmark pictures. Valley of the Dolls, The Graduate, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Wait Until Dark and Bonnie and Clyde were just a few films Hollywood offered up that

year. Critics say there was no better film year. We finished the hour discussing the 1963 Oscar party Joan Crawford threw backstage for all actors in attendance of the show that night ... Frank Sinatra, the emcee, claimed it was the best cocktail party he’d ever attended. Ms. Crawford planned the party in protest of being snubbed for her role in the film, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Her costar Bette Davis was nominated. Throughout the evening Ms. Crawford regularly appeared on stage presenting various awards. Remember, Joan Crawford was a true Hollywood insider; Bette Davis was not. Many say Ms. Crawford already knew the outcome of the evening. When the Oscar was presented for Best Actress, Bette Davis lost. It was Joan Crawford who accepted for an absent Anne Bancroft for the film The Miracle Worker. Fame is such a bitch and so were Crawford and Davis! We hope you’ll tune in to 960 The Patriot KKNT-AM at 5 pm the last Friday of each month.

BAD SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: Apparently a blonde socialite you all know and love just can’t seem to taper her anger issues. Spotted at the butcher’s counter at AJ’s Fine Foods on Lincoln Drive this summer, she was more than happy to berate not only the butcher, but also the associate who tried to intervene. Bad piece of meat or bad personal problems. You have to wonder …

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

TGen What is TGen? TGen – the Translational Genomics Research Institute – is a Phoenix-based non-profit biomedical research institute, founded in 2002. In 2016, TGen became a formal affiliate of the City of Hope Medical Center. TGen uses the scientific advancements made as a result of the Human Genome Project to find new ways of diagnosing disease and providing new treatments. TGen is focused on helping patients with neurological disorders, cancer, diabetes and infectious diseases through cutting edge translational research, which is the process of rapidly moving research discoveries towards clinical care to benefit patients. Simply put, we use your DNA to help fight disease and keep you healthy. What is TGen’s relationship with City of Hope? City of Hope is a world-renowned independent research and cancer and diabetes treatment center, based in greater Los Angeles: www.cityofhope.org. TGen’s affiliation with City of Hope pairs TGen’s testing and treating of patients through the analysis of their genome with City of Hope’s groundbreaking work in treating cancer patients by activating their own immune system against their cancer. This combination of genomics and immune treatment is the vanguard of science and medicine for our patients. What is precision medicine? At TGen, each individual patient’s genome is the Rosetta Stone, spelling out the billions of bits of information from each person’s DNA and other genomic sources, and providing a roadmap for each patient’s treatment. From this information, we tease out the gene or genes that might be the basis of disease, and then try to find a genetic-based solution to help the patient. What types of women’s cancers does TGen study? At TGen, we study many types of cancer that specifically affect women. In particular, physicians and scientists at TGen are studying ovarian, cervical, breast and endometrial cancer. How does TGen help children? There are two major programs at TGen that focus on children: One is the TGen Center for Rare Childhood Disorders (C4RCD), which focuses on neurological problems; and the other addresses various types of pediatric cancers. At the TGen C4RCD clinic, we have sequenced the genomes of hundreds of children and their family members in search of molecular-level clues about their diseases. Often these children arrive at C4RCD following years of going from doctor to doctor

12

Dr. Jeffrey Trent, President and Research Director of TGen

in an unsuccessful search for a diagnosis. At TGen’s clinic, we have taken what often are a jumble of symptoms and, in a high percentage of cases, are able to provide parents with a diagnosis, giving them answers and hope for a better future for their children. For children with many forms of advanced cancer – including bone (osteosarcoma), nervous tissue (neuroblastoma), and connective tissue (sarcomas) – TGen has worked with an international team of physician researchers through the Beat Childhood Cancer Consortium. Almost 200 children have been studied in a series of FDA-supervised clinical trials, using their genomic profiles to help identify specific drugs for treatment. In addition, TGen is focused on a rare brain cancer known as DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma), which most often strikes very young children. DIPG is a type of inoperable brain cancer that forms deep within the brain stem in an area known as the pons. Currently, there are no effective treatments for this aggressive cancer, but TGen is working with a nationwide group of investigators to finally make progress against this disease. Finally, this past March, TGen hosted a group of more than 300 physicians and scientists focused on developing Pediatric Precision Medicine clinical trials. This international conference, co-sponsored by The New England Journal of Medicine, brought together doctors from 35 states and seven countries. For more information about TGen and our work in fighting many types of diseases, please visit www.tgen.org.

CRIMES AGAINST HIGH SOCIETY

CHRISTINA ONASSIS By Bill Dougherty

It’s hard to believe that it’s been thirty years since the passing of the much-troubled heiress Christina Onassis. She was the poor little rich girl who was thrust into the spotlight upon her father’s death in 1975. Four times she married handsome fortune hunters. The last marriage to a French businessman produced her only child Athina, named after Christina’s late mother. If history proves correct, the story of Christina Onassis and the people that surrounded her will remain one of the most famous Greek/ American tragedies ever to be played out and with the entire world as its audience. Christina and her brother Alexander grew up in a life of privilege. Her father was a self-made shipping billionaire by the time he was 25. The children’s mother, Tina, was the daughter of Stavros Livanos; one of the most successful Greek shipping magnets at the time. The children were largely ignored by their jet-setting parents. Tina was exceptionally beautiful, charming and considered one of the world’s top international hostesses. The couple’s son, Alex, inherited his mother’s striking looks, charm and his father’s business sense. His little sister, Christina, only inherited her father’s brains. From the time Christina was a teenager; she assembled an arsenal of plastic surgeons, dietitians and personal trainers. The end result was stunning! She went from ugly duckling to the belle of the ball. By the early 1960s; Aristotle Onassis had begun an affair with world famous opera singer, the Greek-but-Brooklyn born, Maria Callas. When Tina Onassis found out, she immediately divorced the tycoon and later embarked on two more marriages; the last one being to another titanic Greek Shipping tycoon who also happened to be her late sister’s husband, Stavros Niarchos. The divorce devastated Christina and her brother, yet they quickly warmed to Maria Callas. They often said that their father was never happier than with the diva. The foursome traveled the world on Ari’s yacht, named after his youngest child. People would sell their first born

Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis

Maria Callas was devastated too, since she believed that she would be the second Mrs. Onassis. The Kennedy family, along with most of the world press, was less than amused by the nuptials as well. Unlike Maria Callas; the Onassis children mistrusted the former First Lady and looked upon her as a greedy, fortune-seeking black widow. Almost immediately from the arrival of Jackie Kennedy into the House of Onassis, things started to go awry very quickly. The couple had little in common and argued constantly. By the early 1970s, they were leading separate lives. Ari remained in Greece and Jackie was living in New York. Ari rekindled his relationship with Maria Callas. But things continued to slip out of favor for the wealthiest man in the world. He lost his controlling interest in Olympic Airways and lost multimillion dollar shipping contracts to his ex-wife’s husband, his arch nemesis Stavros Niarchos. Then Aristotle Onassis lost massive hotel deals along the French Riviera. In 1973, Alexander Onassis was killed in a plane crash. The pride and joy of his parents, his death devastated the divorced couple. Tina Onassis Niarchos committed suicide several months later and Aristotle Onassis perished in early 1975. Maria Callas died in 1977 from what many considered to be a broken heart. Christina Onassis had lost her entire family in less than a year and a half. She spent the rest of her short and unhappy life blaming Jackie Kennedy for bringing the Kennedy Curse upon her late father’s great house.

Alexander Onassis

to receive an invitation to sail aboard the Christina and in the fall of 1963 that muchcoveted invitation was extended to the most famous woman on the planet. In late summer of 1963; following the heartbreaking death of her son Patrick, who lived only days, Jacqueline Kennedy was reportedly suicidal. Her younger sister Lee Radziwill, an already well-established member of the international jet-set, suggested the First Lady join her sailing aboard the Christina to lift her spirits. While Lee believed Aristotle Onassis was interested in her, the Greek tycoon was mesmerized by Jackie. Following the tragic death of JFK only a few months later, it would be Ari who would arrive first at the White House to dry the tears of the grieving widow. Several years later Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis married, much to the horror of the world and the Onassis children.

Shortly after Alexander’s untimely death, Ari sent his daughter to New York to learn the family businesses. She excelled tremendously and ran them successfully for several years. Eventually she grew tired of the daily responsibilities. By this time, Christina was in the press constantly. Her yo-yo dieting, prescription drug use, marriages and party girl reputation were starting to take their toll. She could be the most beautiful woman in the room commented a Buenos Aires socialite and months later be mistaken for a bag lady. Her fourth marriage would produce her daughter Athenia but like the rest, the marriage was fractured from the get go. She remained friends with Thierry Roussel after their highly publicized split and were often seen together with their daughter. After years of crash diets, suicide attempts and prescription drug addiction; Christina Onassis died of a heart attack in 1988 while visiting friends in Argentina. She was only 37. Today her daughter Athena is one of the wealthiest and most beautiful women in the world. She is an accomplished and awarded equestrian. She divorced in 2016 and divides her time between South American and Europe. She has no ties to Greece and does not speak the language. She once said that if she could burn the Onassis name, she would. She is seldom seen in public and keeps a very low profile. In the end, Christina Onassis was probably spot on about the Kennedy Curse. By the time Jackie Kennedy arrived in 1968, the so-called curse had taken countless lives and created much scandal. Even the adored and iconic First Lady would die at only 64. She would be followed in death by her son John, his wife Carolyn and his sister in-law Lauren who all perished in a plane crash in 1999. We will perhaps never in our lifetime bear witness again to a collision course involving some of the most famous people in the world. The ultimate Greek Tragedy.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

Checking In With The Barrow Women’s Board For 54 years, the Women’s Board has championed Barrow Neurological Institute as an international leader in treating debilitating brain and spine disorders, while raising funds for life-saving research through the Barrow Grand Ball. The members are dedicated philanthropists working tirelessly to raise funds for research that unlocks countless discoveries, treatments and hope for the future. To date, more than $61 million has been raised to investigate and develop new therapies and diagnostics for disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, brain tumors, migraine and concussion. Every year the Women’s Board selects one initiative to receive a portion of the funds. For 2019, the initiative selected is the Barrow Innovation Center.

What is the Barrow Innovation Center? It’s a training program for residents that allows them to develop innovative ideas from theoretical concepts into medical devices, technologies and techniques used in the operating room. It features a prototyping lab with 3D printers and partnerships with patent law and biomedical engineering students. Why is it important? The Center is changing the course of neurosurgery. Some of the new innovations have made spine surgery safer and more efficient, and the more than two dozen devices and techniques that have been developed are improving neurosurgery in operating rooms nationwide. How so? In one instance, a Barrow resident saw the potential for damage to the exposed spinal cord during spine surgery and presented an idea for a device to protect it. Six weeks later, this new device was used in the operating room and it has already improved patient care. How can the community help? You can support the Barrow Innovation Center through the Barrow Grand Ball, January 26, 2019 or by visiting SupportBarrow.org/InnovationCenter. For information contact 2019 Barrow Grand Ball Co-Chairs Dionne Najafi and Terry Roman at contact@womensboardbnf.org.

INTERVIEW

QUESTIONS FOR ... Hallier Law Firm Your law firm has been solely dedicated to divorce work for over 20 years, what inspires you to do this work?

clients, they are individuals with unique divorces that deserve and will get our attention to their particular circumstances and needs.

ANGIE: I want to not only help clients navigate their divorce but help them envision and plan a more positive future. Knowing I can guide clients in re-discovering their passions and can change their perspectives from negativity to positivity with the knowledge of a new beginning ahead keeps me at this.

I see you both at charity events in the valley. Is the firm involved in charity or community service work?

ANDI: My continued motivation for my career in family law is helping people move through a divorce in a way that lets them be as amicable as possible in the future. Divorce is certainly devastating. Educating people on the laws and how they will likely impact their family puts spouses in a position to negotiate respectfully and realistically. The goal is that people can still move in the same circles and maintain a level of respect for each other. You have been recognized as the #1 Family Law/Divorce firm in the Valley for the last five years in a row. What sets you apart from other family law firms? ANDI: Our firm is solely dedicated to family law issues. While our firm handles many high profile and complex divorces, we also have attorneys that can handle divorces at a much more cost-efficient hourly rate for those clients whose divorces are less complicated. And with every case; our team approach, which includes associates and paralegals, means we can be more efficient and attentive to each client. ANGIE: We have a firm Mission Statement that guides us, and I believe sets us apart. Our Mission includes a commitment to be sensitive to each client’s individual and specific needs. That is really our focus – clients are not just

56

ANDI: We want our employees to know how important it is to give back to our community. We support each attorney’s separate charity endeavors and, as an entire firm, we close down our offices twice per year to perform community service projects as a group for a chosen charity. ANGIE: Our firm has been doing these projects in the community for 12 years. We also have funded law school scholarships and we take great pride in our support of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. What is your best advice to people facing divorce in their family? ANGIE: This is not the end of your life; this could be the beginning of a great new life. I wrote the “The Wiser Divorce” to help people emotionally maneuver the process of their divorce and understand that there really may be a “Next Best Life” after this. It is important that people approach their divorce without blame, recognize their own role in what turned out not to be a great marriage, understand how important it is to move on, and commit to keeping the children insulated from any conflict. ANDI: Educate yourself. Certainly, you can research online or talk to friends. However, neither of those options will give you information and advice that is specific to your circumstances and your family. Just as no two people are the same, no two divorces are the same. You owe it to yourself to get professional advice about your range of options and potential

outcomes in the context of divorce. You are going to need to make decisions that will impact the rest of your life. Make sure you understand the big picture.

Gracie Beautiful Gracie is a nine-year-old beauty whose markings would make a Dalmatian jealous. The graceful kitty cat was brought to the Arizona Humane Society in mid-August of this year when her owners could no longer care for her. Gracie still is a kitten at heart and loves to play with string and rubber bands. She also has lived with dogs and children in her previous home, making her great for any household. Lounging and chilling are on the top of her to-dos every day, which makes her a great cuddle buddy.

TRENDY READING

The Fabulous Bouvier Sisters by Sam Kushner and Nancy Schoenberger The world can’t seem to get enough of Jackie Kennedy. Whether you like the iconic First Lady and later multimillionaire book editor or not, her image is not going away anytime soon. But this book is not all things Jackie. In the meticulously written piece; the authors explore the complex, competitive and isolating relationship she shares with her almost equally famous sister, Lee Radziwill. The two women grow up in a silver spoon of opulence and privilege. Yet the adoring and sexually fluid playboy father Black Jack Bouvier is cast aside when their mother remarries Hugh Auchincloss. The girls are shipped abroad and devastated. This single moment seems to shape their flamboyant and often tragic destinies forever. The book also is a great time-travel piece from the Great Depression; thru the romantic 1950s, turbulent 60s and on to the final decades that shape the century. This is a work of speculation on many levels within the tangled lives of perhaps two of the most famous American sisters of the 20th century. The book cleverly crafts a private world of princesses, presidencies, jet-set glamour, high fashion and horrific tragedy shared by both women. The angle is different and enjoyable and is full of twists and turns. An excellent read.
