LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to May By Bill Dougherty

People are talking about Billie Jo and Judd Herberger. In the last several years this dynamic duo has stepped up to the plate in more ways then one. They are the two people in the social swim that seldom if ever say no. In my 26-year affiliation with Trends Magazine, I can tell you, that this is a rarity. It’s never easy to ask people for money. Most in the well-to do-community will direct you to their assistants or foundations. It’s never easy. But the Herbergers have cut through that entire minutia. Simply pick up the phone and they tell you “yes” or “no.” Ninety nine percent of the time it’s yes! Their opulent Scottsdale Penthouse has become the cultural epicenter for all thing arts related and refined culture. They must have a charity-related cocktail party there at least once a week. In a world of the stuffy and often self-impressed, they are a breath of fresh air. The other night they were honored by the Herberger Theater’s prestigious Preforming & Broadcast Oscar De Las Salas and Gary Jackson Arts Hall of Fame, not because

EDMUND D. MARSHALL

their family built it, but because they have filled it over the past 30 years with some of the most incredible performances, lectures, thought-provoking afternoons and evenings and on and on and on. They join the likes of Hugh Downs, Leslie Nielson, Kax and Bob Herberger, Dick Mallory, Alice Cooper, Pat McMahon and more. This is not an easy honor to receive and we are delighted that such a fabulous and progressive couple are the recipient. Mark Mattes, the CEO of Herberger Theater Center, along with Char Augenstein the evening’s chair, put together a remarkable night filled with a magnificent video tribute, lavish entertainment and of course The Beach Boy’s Surfer Girl a perineal favorite Herberger tune. Party and event planner George Abrams did a meticulous job that night providing breathtaking flora excellent service and introducing everyone there to the fine catering of Tom & Lin, who many were not familiar with. Boy did they blow it up! Everyone is still talking about their two layer chocolate mousse. We were lucky enough to be the guests of Oscar De Las Salas and Gary Jackson. What a splendid affair. LA DOLCE VITA

– Continued from page 10

Mr. and Mrs. Herberger for everything you have done and continue to do for all walks of our Valley. In 2002, a deal was brokered between Mary Ellen McKee and my wife Beth McRae on the patio of the opulent home of Marcie and John Amory. At the time Mary Ellen had agreed to chair a small but successful event at the Heard Museum called “Wildfire.” She was concerned that the event needed a new name due to the outbreak of wildfires in Arizona, recognizable entertainment and a formula that would take the evening to new heights. Together the two ladies embarked on a new path for the evening now called “Moondance.” They sought the talents of Native American and two-time Grammy winner Rita Coolidge. She blew the audience away with a succession of her top 10 hits including “All Time High,” which is still regarded as one of the best James Bond theme songs ever recorded. They enlisted the talents of Dennis Thompson and his Mary Ellen McKee impressive White House Design Studio

team. Then they sold the place out! Just the other night, the First Lady of The Heard Museum Mary Ellen returned to work her magic yet again and did she deliver! The festivities for this year’s Moondance were as spectacular as they were almost two decades ago. I’ve been told they raised a tremendous amount of money. The gala was totally sold out. Everyone swooned! We are so lucky to have Mary Ellen McKee and the museums savvy CEO David Roche. I suspect the Heard Museum will only continue to get even better with age, like a fine bottle of wine. The majestic improvements to the museum’s courtyard, courtesy of the Virginia Piper Trust, along with jaw-dropping recently added galleries only serve to make this Valley gem sparkle brighter. What a night! BAD SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: Someone who thought they were going to make a big splash into the world of high society has quickly realized that her pool has been drained. Why didn’t you just tell us the truth? But rather you chose to instead embellish, lie and Photoshop your life into a delusional and distorted reality. We would have welcomed you with open arms. You clearly had talents and could have been on everyone’s social radar. Now those same people, and there are a lot of them, just hope you disappear into the night forever. Honesty is always the best policy. What a shame!

Phoenix Theatre Celebrates 100 Years in the Valley Everyone you know and adore made their way to the Phoenix Theatre a few weeks ago. The festive mood of the merrymakers there only served to solidify the small theatre that has become an institution in the Grand Canyon state. This year Nan and CA Howlett, Maja and John Langbein and Sandy and Mac Magruder chaired the victorious bash. It was a totally sold-out event too! Creative Director Michael Barnard must be credited with his savvy productions and an opulent crowd of some of the finest people in the social community that will always have his back. THE FAIRY GODMOTHER OF FASHION AND BOOB WHISPERER

S

Scylvia-Elvira Danese of Danese Creations

cylvia-Elvira Danese, owner of Danese Creations, has been in business since 1971. Through her gift of custom designing, men and women can get all their custom designing, tailoring, alterations, bridal wear and all accessories, fabric, jewelry and the best fitting bra. “I’m a 3rd generation Custom Designer/Tailor in my family, I follow My Mother Maria and Grandmother Chapita,” said Danese. “My designs have made it to the Emmys, The Country Music Awards, the Oscars, the White House, The Oprah show, I’ve also been featured on First Edition, total Divas, all the local TV channels. It’s been an amazing ride for these last 48 years!” While Danese is proud of the accolades and the high profile clients that have graced her designs, some of her fondest memories are the ones that have changed the lives of others. “I saved a brides wedding day by making a beautiful, custom

wedding gown from scratch, on the day of the wedding, in 2 hours and 50 minutes, that is how I got dubbed “the Fairy Godmother Of Fashion”, she explains. “I’m also called “The Boob Whisperer” for the expert bra fittings that I do. Your boobs can either make you or break you. If they look good, you look good and feel good, sexy, young, (even if you’re old) thin, (even if you’re heavy), and your clothes fit well.” Danese is committed to helping every man or woman find their perfect fit, in addition women can get a free bra fitting. Clients need to set an appointment with her shop, and with zero obligations to purchase bras from her. “Most women just don’t know what a bra is supposed to do, how a bra is supposed to fit, how a bra has been designed, or what bra size is right for them. Industry estimates are that anywhere from 70 to 80 perfect of women are wearing the wrong size bra, although in my opinion, informed by more than 48

years of experience, it’s more like 90 percent. And there’s been no reliable source for women to go to and find out the truth about bras, bra measuring and bra sizing, until now.” If clients are not in the market for custom designing, you will find original Danese Creations designs, ready-to-wear one of a kind bridal gowns, mother of the bride or groom gowns, evening gowns, cocktail dresses, skirts, blouses, and more. Danese Creations prides themselves on being able to make custom garments from a picture or a drawing or an idea and she can do this all without requiring the client to be local. Above all, Danese has one goal for her shop “To do the impossible to get to solve all the sewing problems that come my way. My motto that I got from my Father Giacomo Danese is “Nothing is Impossible, Difficult but not Impossible”, she explains. “We never say no, it’s always yes we can, just say when!”

ZooFari 2019 got off to a fantastic start early this fall due to the guidance and expertise of two of our Valley favorites. 99.9 KEZ radio personality and 1993 Trendsetter Beth McDonald, together with her handsome husband Mike Biehler, pulled out all the stops. Guests were greeted by a menagerie of animals, birds and yes even some creepy reptiles. Tropical

drinks flowed and some of the very best chefs from around the Valley showcased their fine foods to a huge crowd of philanthropists. Many in attendance were so pleased that the event has had new life breathed in to it and is now a smashing success once again.

HEART TO HEART INNER-VIEW

Checking in with Beth McDonald and Mike Buehler By Barbara Kaplan Beth McDonald and her husband Mike Buehler welcomed me into their lovely home. As we started talking Beth said, “I Usually Ask the Questions!” I sensed a little discomfort that she quickly turned into fun. We talked about Bill Austin and how they met when he was a guest on her radio show. They became best friends, which became Beth & Bill for 20 of the 30 years Beth has been on radio starting with her own show. Beth explained their synergy, “On the air we seldom knew what we would talk about yet it always worked.” When Bill was dying, he reassured her saying, “You can do this!” So, after his death she had to reinvent myself and the show became Beth and Friends. “I like doing radio alone. I enjoy having fun and giving information. I like making people feel good in the morning and feel as though I am their family. It’s exciting to think I am meeting new people, too.” I asked Beth what her magic is to always stay fresh and interesting, “I am who I am. I am real and I give people hope, encourage them to be nice and kind. I like being part of the solution. It is too stressful out there.” “The show has always been real. It has to be!” she said. I talk about real people and real topics. “I work well off the people!” “IT JUST HAS TO BE REAL!” When I asked Beth who had the greatest influence in her life, she replied without hesitation, “It’s my parents! They had quite an impact and were very patient with me. I have sisters and aunts and the women in the family were all strong women. The theme in my family was that we females Photo by Barbara Kaplan

never thought there was anything we couldn’t do! And my father reinforced us and influenced me, greatly!” Mike is Beth’s greatest supporter today. She enjoys looking at the interesting things Mike brings home from his estate sale business which he started after retiring from the world of IT. I asked Mike, what should I know about Beth? “She’s kinda shy and assumes people don’t know who she is. Socially she is very quiet.” Beth chimed in, “I don’t want to just talk at people.” She is self-deprecating. And tends to stay within herself. “After work I live a life like everyone else.” “When raising my children, I didn’t raise them to think I was known.” I have a quiet life. She cherishes the Midwest girl that is always a part of her. She loves to make people laugh, feel good, be a good person and be honest. “You know how you want to be treated. Do the right thing and you can’t go wrong!” Beth is the same person on radio and at home. “When I am home, I love watching old game shows and sitcoms like Andy Griffith. I love to read and watch cooking shows. I enjoy cooking and am an excellent cook.”, which Mike quickly confirmed. Beth’s home is her sanctuary. I asked Beth about her favorite room in her home and she smiled and said definitely the great room. “This is where I relax, watch TV, work at my writing desk and catch up with Mike.” Her favorite holiday is Halloween and she loves to decorate for holidays, especially Christmas. One of her favorite accessories are her battery-operated candles placed strategically around her home, on dimmers to light in the evening and shut off at bedtime. Beth’s home is where she rejuvenates her wit and charm so she can bring joy to her Friends and loyal listeners every morning. And she never wants to stop being the Real Beth McDonald!

Happy New Year from Phoenix Symphony Q&A WITH PHOENIX SYMPHONY BALL Who chaired the first Phoenix Symphony Ball and where was it held? Mrs. DeWitt Merriam chaired the first Symphony Gala in 1954. We are researching the history of the Phoenix Symphony Galas. Some of the information is still missing, but many of the early galas were held at the Phoenix Country Club. What makes the Phoenix Symphony Ball stand out? It’s the only chance to listen to and dance to the full 66-member Phoenix Symphony. For 2019, the Gala honors the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust for 20 years of support for the Symphony and many other nonprofit organizations in Maricopa County. It’s one of the few large galas that do no fundraising during the evening – it’s all about fun! Will the ball always be held on New Year’s Eve? Part of the branding for the Symphony Gala is to fix it to New Year’s Eve. The goal is to have more people each year make the Gala the focus of their NYE plans. There are so many galas in Phoenix now competing for dates – ours is unique and easy to remember! How did the two of you decide to chair the ball? During the time we were thinking about co-chairing the Gala, we attended a Mind Over

Phoenix Symphony Chairmen Bruce Covill and Lucia Renshaw

Music class to learn more about it. We chose a kindergarten class

This is a ground-breaking program in which teachers and

because that was the age of our grandson.

musicians are partnered for a school year to use music to teach

We were impressed by the impact of this experience on the children. But we were overwhelmed at our own response to the experience. We decided that afternoon that we needed to support this incredible effort and we agreed to chair the Gala. Where do the proceeds from the ball go? All proceeds from the Gala go to support the Symphony’s Mind Over Music (MOM) program, which puts Symphony musicians into Title 1 schools.

52

STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) skills in elementary school classrooms. Thanks to the financial success of the 2018 Gala, the number of schools involved in the program grew from 8 to 19. What sets this ball apart from other charity balls? The unique date (NYE), the unique music (full Symphony), unique setting (AZ Biltmore), supporting the unique MOM program and this year honoring not a person or couple but the entire Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.

OCEAN 44 Reviewed by Laurie Florence Manucci 4748 N Goldwater Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ 85251 | (480) 867-0044 | www.ocean44.com If you want elegance, glamour, sophistication and top-notch seafood and steaks; look no further than the latest creation of Dennis Mastro; founder of Mastro’s Steak house, Steak 44, Dominick’s Steak house, City Hall and Ocean Club. All are considered extraordinary, but Ocean 44 takes it a step further.

What a beautiful and breathtaking place with splendid architecture, design and lighting. An exquisite waterfall is the backdrop for the entrance where you walk through the doors and view a massive raw seafood bar. The entire team is attentive, and they see to it that your entire dining experience is nothing short of spectacular. Our server Lindsay was amazing. She welcomed us graciously and explained all the wonderful items the menu had to offer, as well as the specials for the evening. We started with the jumbo colossal shrimp cocktail. I must say, they were the largest and meatiest shrimp I have ever had; served with housemade cocktail sauce and horseradish. But, how could I forget the bread they brought to the table? Usually we forgo the bread (you know carbs and all), but it would be impossible to forgo this bread! It is out-of-this world, fresh-baked pull-apart bread that was so buttery on the inside and flaky on the outside. We asked Lindsay what the secret is with the bread and she said they didn’t tell her; only that it is their “house-baked specialty bread.”

58

Next up, were the New England Lobster rolls; another “to die for” menu item consisting of chunks of Maine butter-poached lobster on grilled brioche buns. They were delicious and I would definitely order these again. We also had a split-wedge salad topped with generous amounts of bacon and blue cheese and served with ice cold silverware. Our entrees were the twin butter-poached lobster tails and the New Bedford seared sea scallops. These were the absolute best scallops I have ever had; served sizzling with just butter on an extremely hot plate with a sauce on the side. For sides, we had the sautéed asparagus and Chef Siegfried’s au gratin potatoes with caramelized onions, gouda and mozzarella cheese. Delicious! Anthony was another member of the wait staff who also contributed to a wonderful dining experience. He was always checking on us to see if we needed anything. Along with Lindsay, they didn’t skip a beat. To top it off, we were celebrating my birthday and they brought us a chocolate cake that had three layers of chocolate. It was decadent! Some of the additional menu items I would like to try, would be other items on the raw bar as well as their prime steaks that are all well-aged for 28 days and hand cut in house by their master butcher. Please make it to Ocean 44. The ambiance, service and food were magnificent. I am already looking forward to dining here again! Thank you, Ocean 44!

America’s Reluctant Prince by Steven Gillon

In today’s world, friends of the dearly departed often quickly become their biographers; especially if they happen to be famous. America’s Reluctant Prince, The Life of John F. Kennedy, Jr. is no exception. Mr. Gillon and Mr. Kennedy became friends long before the rapid ascent into isolation took over the life of a man who most American’s fantasized would someday walk in his late father’s shoes. In this latest Kennedy offering; we first learn how the family tried, without success, to dissuade the writer from publishing this book. Boy, that’s a surprise! With so many positive and more very negative books on the famous New England clan written, it’s no shock that the family has had enough. Mr. Gillon provides great insight into Mr. Kennedy’s private and often painful existence. He shares an extraordinary relationship with his mother Jackie. But she is extremely strict and keeps her kids away from the Kennedy cousins. According to Mr. Gillon, Mr. Kennedy and his sister Caroline are not close and he often refers to her as a snob. The beautiful and famous women he dates and later marries push him around. His business venture, George Magazine, starts strong but quickly falls flat. He is accident prone and seldom listens to people who give him good advice. You’ll have to read the book to learn the rest. More revelations, more secrets and more heartbreak in an all too brief life.

Catch And Kill by Ronan Farrow

Since its release, Catch and Kill has shot to the top of the bestseller list. It’s no surprise since it was written by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and television personality Ronan Farrow. The son Of Mia Farrow and perhaps Frank Sinatra? Mr. Farrow had special access to a closed-off world of A-list celebrities, politicians and spies alike. On the heels of the#Me Too Movement, the book’s release could not have come at a better time. It was NBC that told then new Anchor Ronan Farrow to stop reporting on movie producer Harvey Weinstein and his decades-long sexual abuse pattern. A long-hushed Hollywood secret, that had made some beautiful and some not-so-beautiful women into monumental actresses. Several even won Academy Awards and even today, none are talking about Mr. Weinstein. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. When Mr. Farrow sought the advice of fellow NBC journalists Tom Brokaw and Matt Lauer, who also suggested he kill the story on Mr. Weinstein, things got even worse. Soon Ronan Farrow would leave the network, win a Pulitzer Prize and realize Mr. Lauer, Mr. Brokaw and many others in the media had a lot to hide. Catch And Kill is an excellent read. Half spy novel and half a work of nonfiction, at times it’s hard to put down. Mr. Farrow breaks a long-standing casting couch code that has not only been silenced in Tinsel Town, but in the rarified world of politics and broadcast journalism.

Jesse Jesse is an adorable survivor who has been through a lot in his short life. At just three-monthsold, the sweet German Shepherd mix was found as a stray pup and brought to the Arizona Humane Society when he was feeling ill. It was found that Jesse had parvo but after a little stint in AHS’ Parvo Puppy ICU, he is back to his healthy, happy self and cannot wait to find a family to play and snuggle with! Sweet Jesse can be found at AHS’ Sunnyslope Campus off of 13th Ave. and Hatcher Rd. in Phoenix. His adoption fee is $600 and includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt.

Jenny As cute as she is unique, Jenny is a purrfect kitty who is always in-style and always fashionable. The cute domestic shorthair calico is just six months old and is as sassy as she is beautiful. With so much energy, Jenny would love a home where she can play with lots of toys all day and have a nice, cozy spot to relax when she’s deemed it “beauty sleep” time. Jenny can be found at AHS’ Campus for Compassion location off of 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $75 and includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip and a free follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. For more information, visit azhumane.org/adopt.

Please note: These pets might have been adopted by the time you visit the shelter, however AHS has dozens more wonderful pets who also need loving homes. Please take a moment to meet some of the other dogs, cats and other companion animals at the shelter! To see all adoptable animals right now, visit www.azhumane.org/findapet.
