La Dolce Vita Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer. As you know the season seems to be starting earlier and earlier each year. The month of October brings us countless events, with most being stacked upon each other. I will say this until my dying day. All you are doing is cheating the charity. Last season like this one there were weekends when nine events took place and the next weekend nothing! I just don’t get it. Oh well! September and early October found us gathered to shoot an extraordinary layout for Trends. Over the summer we forged a partnership with E.D. Marshall Jewelers, Barrett-Jackson and the Phoenix Heart Ball. We gathered the ladies first. They included Chair Kimberly Afkhami, Vice Chairs Lisa Geyser and Paula Wichterman together with Chair-Elect Jennifer Carmer and Sweetheart Libby Cohen. They were adorned in stunning ball gowns from To Be Continued, thanks to Chrissy Sayare, and millions of dollars worth of fine Jewelry from E.D. Marshall Jewelers, thanks to Bonnie and Ed Marshall. Then Laura Flagler, “make-up artist to the stars,” stepped in to work her magic and Scott Foust of Image-Industry Photography took care of the rest. It was an amazing day.

Several weeks later we met at BarrettJackson’s Scottsdale headquarters to wrap up the shoot. Tim Heit, the official photographer of the world-famous auction, created an amazing portfolio reminiscent of Motorama of the late 1950s and early ‘60s. The Barrett-Jackson team pulled out all the stops and meticulously matched the Heart Ball ladies to some of the most incredible and rare autos in the world. All the cars were tremendous, but I can’t shake the black 1967 Corvette, which still had the window sticker attached to the driver side door. The end result was breathtaking! Carolyn and Craig Jackson run an incredible operation. People are talking about the Esplanade and the Ritz-Carlton. It’s no secret that the stately hotel closed its doors last month for a planned move to Paradise Valley. While I understand why the hotel chain made the decision they did, I still think it’s a slap in the face to the Camelback Corridor. Many of you longtime residents remember the corner of 24th Street and Camelback Road as a peaceful residential corner. On the east side, was a massive Continued on page 10

La Dolce Vita – Continued from page 9 Christmas tree lot and to the west Café Casino, Cine Capri and several low-rise furniture stores. The other day I sat waiting to make a left from 24th Street onto Camelback Road and I thought to myself how did the city of Phoenix ever allow this to happen? You might remember the origin Esplanade was to have the RitzCarlton in the middle of the complex with two to three mid-rise buildings on either side of the hotel. The Esplanade was billed as a mixed-use space of shops, restaurants, business and PLENTY of easily accessed uncovered parking. At the last minute the plans were changed. The Ritz was oddly placed on the corner and a goliath number of mid-rise towers were crammed onto the rest of the pad. Over the years many of our advertisers lost their lunch in the complex. There was little foot traffic and the site proved difficult to access. The only saving grace in my opinion was the Ritz-Carlton. In the early 1990s and into the 21st century it was the place to been seen. Don Morgan, the handsome bar/bistro manager, always remembered your name and made sure you were seated in the very best spot. Both Judi Yates and Lori Larcher were in management there too. One evening after a Sade concert at the America West Arena, several of us dropped into the richly paneled bar for a night cap. In the far corner sat Sade herself and her band

embers. She wore a backless turquoise turtleneck halter top with m huge silver hoop earrings. She looked straight ahead smoking Marlboro Reds. We were so intimidated by her beauty that none of us had the courage to approach her table. This was just one of the many stories we would trade with each other along the years. I hope that famed tea sommelier Jeffery Hattrick might rejoin the staff once the new property is opened. I can’t think of anyone who brought so much joy to so many people. Enough said. In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That an inconvenient woman is trying to make a splash on the social scene, but this time the community knows who the two ladies are that she’s blackmailing. That years of therapy has made a mean and agenda-driven socialite actually quite nice. That a much-coveted invitation didn’t reach the mailboxes of several couples who had planned to attend, thanks to an error-prone entity. That men should never wear print In Cocktail Polo News you should know: ties after 6 p.m. even if they’re by Hermès. That you should never judge a book by its cover, unless the book is a complete work of fiction. That Brooks Brothers may want to rethink its ad campaign showcasing tattoos. That a socialite with too much time on her hands puts provocative comments on other people’s Facebook posts. That the best private parties are the ones you never see on social media. Now you’re all caught up for the next 15 minutes.

Why did you move from television to Hospice of the Valley? After 34 years in the TV news business, it was time for a new challenge! I was ready for an “encore career” that would let me serve in a whole new way. And at Hospice of the Valley, I know I am making a difference in families’ lives … they tell us so EVERY DAY! How did this position become available to you? I called Susan Levine, whom I love and admire so much … just to talk “woman to woman” about exploring a new career path, and what do you know … that path led right to Hospice of the Valley! What made you leave television for a desk job? Well, I do have a lovely desk … but I prefer to be out in the field alongside our wonderful staff and volunteers caring for patients AND out in the community educating people about all the services we offer. It’s not just “end of life care”. I will also help raise funds ($10 million donated last year) for charity care because Hospice of

Focus on the Phoenix Art Museum Spanish Colonial Art was introduced into the New World at the dawn of the colonial period in the Americas. Paintings and sculptures of religious iconography were imported by the thousands. These images were used as educational tools to convert indigenous peoples to Catholicism. As more of these pieces were in demand, transplanted European artists began overseeing workshops where local peoples were trained to provide product. As these newly created artists began to produce paintings and sculptures, their works began to be extremely different from the European pieces. Masterworks of Spanish Colonial Art from Phoenix Art Museum’s Collection demonstrates works from the eighteenth-century Hispanic Americas. These paintings plus retables which are small paintings on copper or tin are quite different from the European artworks. They are original in their political, social, religious and cultural themes.

The collection of Gerry S. Culpepper, who was a collector living in Brazil for two decades, plus a recent gift of colonial artwork from generous supporters Diane and Bruce Halle will be on exhibit through February 28, 2016. These Masterpieces of Spanish Colonial Art may be viewed in the Orme Lewis Gallery. Nine of the exhibited paintings were cleaned as the result of funds provided by Shawn and Joe Lampe. This is the first time these paintings have been on display. Additionally, seven community couples provided resources to have them framed. Along with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe from Mexico, the majority of the works come from the eighteenth century Viceroyalty of Peru. Each image imparts the story of religious devotion. It is a blending of Old and New World interpretation of religious themes. Though heavily influenced by European artists, the artists of Colonial Latin America displayed their own visions through their personal art.

The Palm Beach Story By Bill Dougherty There are no signs that say “Palm Beach Next Exit” or “Welcome to Palm Beach”. There are only 3 simple draw bridges that from West Palm Beach take you to a small barrier island just east of the intercostal city. On the east side of the island there is perhaps one of the most beautiful stretches of public beach flanked by inviting turquoise water. Yet there are no public restrooms or food concessions and few public parking spaces. And that’s precisely how the residents of this vastly wealthy small island wish to keep it. My first encounter with Palm Beach was in 1993 as a clothing buyer for the then recently relaunched and hugely successful Lilly Pulitzer line. I was infatuated with the small town the second I crossed the bridge from West Palm Beach. West Palm is considered the island’s warehouse, since limited goods and services are available on the island. Since my first visit, the island and its culture have greatly changed. At a cocktail party in 1993 at Lilly Pulitzer’s stunning estate, I was introduced to the likes of C.Z Guest, her daughter Cornelia and Molly Wilmont.

But those famous names have almost disappeared from the island. And the days of the restricted Bath and Tennis Club and The Everglades seem to be eclipsed by Donald Trump’s Mar-A Lago Club, Club Colette and The Palm Beach Country Club, much to the horror of the dwindling town’s WASP population. Palm Beach may be experiencing a shift from vast industrial fortunes to Wolves of Wall Street, but it’s still one hell of a place with the best social season imaginable. Here are a few points of interest.

Where to stay: THE COLONY HOTEL This magnificent boutique hotel is located diagonally across the street from famed Worth Avenue. The proximity of the hotel makes walking almost anywhere on the island accessible. The property has just undergone a magnificent renovation by famed designers Carleton Varney and Brinsley Matthews. It may not be the largest hotel on the island, but none are more beautiful. The Polo Steaks & Seafood is still one of the best places in Palm Beach to be seen for lunch or dinner pool side. Shopping: WORTH AVENUE Forget Rodeo Drive, it’s just too Nuevo Reich. Worth Avenue is the real deal. The immaculate shopping street houses every high end label imaginable, art galleries, local shops plus an impressive Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. Don’t miss Via Mizner one the small court yards, just off the fabulous street. It was the original home of Lilly Pulitzer and several other posh boutiques that still remain.

Restaurants: TA-BOO Evidently Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton appeared one morning for breakfast in the famed eatery hung over from an evening on the charity ball circuit. The bartender suggested a pick-me-up of tomato juice, vodka and spices and created the Bloody Mary. But that is just one antidote of the famed Worth Avenue restaurant. The menu and the people that dine there are all delicious! It’s been open and famous since 1941. CHARLEY’S CRAB PALM BEACH There’s not a better view on the island of the blue shades of the Atlantic than this place. Located on South Ocean Boulevard, this Palm Beach staple is famous for the very best seafood selections, excellent service and strong Martinis. It’s some of the very best Seafood on which you’ll ever dine. It’s too bad we only had two days on the island. We would have stopped by the Breakers Hotel, Café L’Europe and Trillion. We’ll save those places and others for our next visit. There’s nothing quite like Palm Beach. Unique in all the world. Once you visit it stays on your mind forever. It’s easy to get to. West Palm Beach International Airport is served by all major carries. But don’t visit in the summer. The town is quiet then and dreadfully humid. Drop by during the season, when champagne flows like water from a Canterra fountain and caviar is passed around like candy.

She follows wife Priscilla, who maintains a fantastic relationship with her ex-husband and Linda Thompson, who found Elvis’s moods and surroundings too dark and gloomy to stay. Graceland is a place of Disney-like perfection. The estate purchased for Gladys and Vernon Presley is a gift from their son in 1956. Gladys and a top Memphis designer turn the house into a stunning

The Presley family doctor spares Vernon and his only child the truth and tells the two Mrs. Presley died of heart failure. Her death and the still birth of his twin Jesse, haunt Elvis for the rest of his life. Ginger Alden is mystified by Graceland. Maids and servants arrive and depart behind the wheels of Eldorados and Continentals. Not a blade of grass goes unmowed nor a chip of paint untouched. On the ground floor the “new” Memphis Mafia

Elvis has exchanged a 2-pack-a-day habit and a rail thin frame, for platters of lasagna, vast amounts of cheese burgers and mixing bowls full of ice cream. He continues to smoke cigars and teeters on 300 pounds. By this point he lives in fear of two soon to be published tell all books. The first by former Memphis Mafia bodyguards and the second by his much detested former stepmother Dee Presley. He is drug addicted and sun deprived, choosing to seldom leave the second floor of the mansion. This is a book everyone should read if interested in the subject of Elvis Presley. It is a tender portrayal of a young and innocent young lady unable to control the slow moving train wreck with which she has fallen in love. Ms. Alden offers few criticisms in the book. Elvis is kind and extremely generous to a fault to all who surround him, yet he too is extremely dissatisfied with the outcome of his life. We’ve waited more than 40 years for this book. Any Elvis fan will greatly enjoy it.

Escape to San Juan By Bill Dougherty

Many people think of Puerto Rico as a foreign country. It’s not. It’s a US territory and one of the finest in the small collection we possess in that respect. Everyone is fluent in English and Spanish and the U.S. Dollar is the only currency accepted. Its beaches are among the most beautiful in all the world. It’s spotless. The roads and freeways are impeccable and the island is lush with tropical vegetation. Tax incentives have made it a focal point for US citizens wanting a second home. These incentives have also made it ripe for American chefs to relocate 5 star and Zagat award-winning restaurants to Old San Juan as well as the rest of the island. Where to stay: The Intercontinental San Juan is perhaps the best offering on the island. Centrally located, the property is just minutes from Old San Juan and all the water sports and tourist attractions imaginable. The hotel boasts 3 fantastic café/restaurants, a swinging Latin disco, a casino and enormous tropical swimming pool that winds its way toward the turquoise Atlantic just steps from the lobby.

Rent a car: Every major rental car company has a site on the island. Driving in Puerto Rico is a piece of cake. Honking is frowned upon and drivers are extremely courteous. Although the freeway signs are in Spanish, it’s still a breeze to drive there. There are tour buses that can take you to the island’s famed rain forest, but there’s no faster way to cut the drive time in a rental car. We recommend Thrifty because they are very inexpensive and they give you very nice large cars that are immaculate! Restaurants: Marmalade in Old San Juan is top 5. The culinary experiences mix European fusions with Caribbean flavors to create an amazing dining experience. Start with Escargot

and White Bean soup. Then get the Lobster Risotto, Sea Bass and Popcorn Shrimp. Desert, order the Milk Chocolate Mousse, Salted Carmel Popcorn Cream Brule and the Butterscotch Bread Pudding. Chef/Owner Peter Schintler combines amazing fare with hip music and decor plus a beautiful wait staff and his lovely young daughter who visits with each table.

It’s a long day to fly from Phoenix to San Juan, but it’s worth it. You won’t find more beautiful beaches or accommodations. The restaurants are marvelous! Some of the best in the world. Old San Juan is one of the most charming shopping, dining and residential districts imaginable. From the moment you arrive you feel as if you are in a faraway country, but you’re not and that’s what makes it so desirable. Put it this way. Puerto Rico has all the charm and nuances of Mexico without being Mexico.

If you have not been to Chef Erasmo “Razz” Kamnitzer’s gem Razz’s, located at Scottsdale and Shea in Scottsdale, you are definitely missing the mark in gourmet cuisine. A native of Venezuela, Chef Razz is the seventh generation of chefs in his family. On our most recent visit we couldn’t help but notice that he has definitely not lost his touch as one of the best and most innovative chefs in the Valley, if not the country. He has a flair for original and creative dishes that only he can create. He is always behind the vibrant, open, interactive kitchen where you can also sit at the chef’s table and experience his culinary magic first hand. If you would like a dining experience that will leave you breathless, this is the place for you. The place has a great ambiance with artwork everywhere. The menu is constantly rotating but with some staples that he always seems to keep around. We started out with this amazing appetizer called the beggars pouch, consisting of scallops, lobster, shrimp, mixed vegetables and cheese in phyllo dough. It was delicious. For the special that evening

they had several different things including a pistachio crusted sea bass, but I simply cannot go to Razz’s and not order my favorite thing on the menu which is his classic Bouillabaisse (Razz’s style) shrimp, clams, mussels, fish and vegetables in spicy tomato broth. Heaven! The other entrée we ordered is another one of his specialties, the Grilled Rack of Lamb Chops. Cooked to perfection they were moist, succulent, and full of flavor with Tamarind and garlic marinade. You cannot go wrong with these! For dessert we had the chocolate crème brulè. Very decadent, creamy and full of chocolate flavor. Be sure to make a reservation as the tables are limited and he does close down for the summer months, but the food is stellar and is one of the best restaurants in all of the
