Over the long hot summer, we saw the passing of a truly incredible man – Jack Clifford, our Fabulous Phoenician from 2007. He passed to the heavens leaving behind perhaps one of the most extraordinary

wife Marguerite the year we decided to chair the Phoenix Symphony Ball with her family. Jeanne and Gary Herberger, who were great friends with the dynamic couple, made sure we got to know them both very well. To be in the presence of Jack Clifford was truly amaz-

KTVK. But Jack had the ability to make you feel like you were the most important person in the room. This gift would eventually take him from the television screen to television sales and later C.E.O. at Channel 12 KPNX. He was so tremendously talented that even media mogul Ted Turner took notice and the Clifford’s were swept away to CNN in various markets. It was in Atlanta that Jack founded the Food Network. The network is still among the most viewed cable stations in the world. The Clifford’s eventually retired back to The Valley and became one of the true forces of nature on the philanthropic scene. They threw lavish parties in their opulent Scottsdale home for a boundless number of local charities. Their reach in the community was simply amazing.

With the unexpected passing of Marguerite Clifford in late 2007, Jack managed to still stay connected with the social world. Ever the optimist, he continued to lend his talents and donations to all the organizations that had been so fond of his late wife and him. In 2010, he met and married his second wife Beverly. The couple relocated to Southern California that same year. Jack will always be remembered for the man who believed a person could do anything. He loved to ballroom dance and he was a truly gifted cook and baker. He was a man who was always looking for the next big thing. Judging from his incomparable life he always found it.

Remembering ... Bonnie Marshall By Bill Dougherty

We learned of the passing of 1997 Trendsetter Bonnie Marshall just as summer was coming to a close. For more than a year, Bonnie had quietly been battling a long illness. Her passing leaves the social world in shock and disbelief. In 1992, I was first introduced to Bonnie at a Childhelp board meeting by Jazelle Ghiz and Marie Granatelli. This was long before the children’s advocacy moved their headquarters from California to Phoenix. We had the opportunity to work closely together on many different luncheons and evening events for the charity. It was always such a pleasure to work with Bonnie. Her kind smile, radiant beauty and elegance made her a stand out from the social-climbing norm. From a philanthropic standpoint, Bonnie Marshall was simply amazing! Together with her husband Ed, the couple owned and operated one of the most successful Jewelry stores in Arizona, ED Marshall. They were always at the best parties, charity balls and galas and always lending their generosity to the community. Bonnie never said no to any charitable request. The heart-stopping gems became the gold standard during live auctions at boundless fundraisers for decades. Bonnie was also a long-time committee member of the Phoenix Heart Ball. Her work there was perhaps the most impressive. But few knew of her love for the sport of baseball. She put enormous efforts into not only Little League but also into Buddy Ball which assisted disabled children in playing the game. Very few people were ever aware Bonnie did this. It was just another facet to her lovely yet mysterious personality. Bonnie Marshall will always be remembered as the swan in the pale pink suit. Her platinum hair pulled back in a bun and standing behind the jewelry counters of Capriccio and ED Marshall Jewelers with that brilliant smile. It was as if she had been sent from central casting to play the role of an elegant and rarified jeweler. The quiet elegance she brought to the world of high society will probably never be duplicated again. She will be missed more than I can ever express.

Celebrating 25 Years of Beauty Q&A WITH WHITE HOUSE DESIGN STUDIO How did you come up with the concept for the shop? BRIAN: Working for seven years under the tutelage of the Brady brothers, it just seemed to seep in from all the wonderful work they had designed; and then working with Dennis and his unbounded energy and talent, we hammered out the minute details of bringing art to life. DENNIS: I had the good fortune to walk in to a situation that was on the tail end of years of hard work by the Brady brothers, Tom Croak, Jeanne Summers, Brenda Schwartz, Rob Hudachek and Brian Trahan. I’ve just added my ideas to their foundation. What experience led you to open the studio? BRIAN: Coming from working with Terry and Ron Brady for 7 years, then after they had both passed away, the family inherited the business and I along with Tom Croak and Jeanne Summers thought we would better carry on the Brady style on our own. So White House was born April 15, 1995.

What other services do you offer other than flora? BRIAN: Rentals of all sorts; from tables, chairs, linens, glasses, silverware and dishes; all things tabletop. We make many of your linens and napkins. Room décor: Rental props for the ceiling, walls and floors. Home consultations for interior work or just to see the atmosphere of the space for an event. From your smallest intimate gathering to the largest charity gala, we can get whatever you need or desire. How many locations have you had in the Valley? BRIAN: 5 Where do you see the studio in another 25 years? BRIAN: Expanding, always expanding DENNIS: Still creating and hoping to be a leader in the Valley.

The White House has become a premiere flower studio. What do you attribute this to? BRIAN: Hard work and an excellent eye for design that can make a client feel as though you’ve read their mind. DENNIS: It is a group effort of many creative people coming together. What’s the best wedding you’ve planned? BRIAN: Linda Pope’s DENNIS: We’ve had fortunate opportunities to create many memories to last a lifetime. My favorites are those where we could create a unique spin. What’s the best gala or charity ball you’ve planned? DENNIS: We have created so many of the large events in the Valley, it’s hard to say what sticks out most in our minds. However, the Board of Visitors and hospital boards are those that have given us the opportunity to create on a large scale with dimension in our design.

People are talking about the departure late last spring of Sybil Harrington Director Amata Cruz from the Phoenix Art Museum. I’ve been told that Ms. Cruz actually started looking for another job back in January. I can’t help but think she had to have been tippedoff regarding the two scathing articles written about her less than stellar leadership skills in the New Times Newspaper. Both articles appeared shortly before her resignation. This entire ordeal has made me so sad. When I purchased Trends in 2000, I made it my goal to correct the wrong done by the previous publisher and celebrate rather than castigate the museum. In the years that followed, we showcased just about everything imaginable at the museum in the pages of Trends Magazine. As a result; we were given V.I.P. status to countless exhibitions, Circles parties, openings and cocktail receptions. At the time; Jim Ballenger, who is the now retired Director, made sure we had everything we needed. He even checked in with me periodically to make sure we were both on the same page. It was a tremendous partnership and we enjoyed spotlighting the amazing things that were happening at the museum to all. This came to a screeching halt with the arrival of Ms. Cruz. When I introduced myself to her at a private party and suggested we have lunch,

she glanced over and simply said, “You can email me.” At that moment, I realized it would be a waste of time. In the 4 years that followed, decades-long volunteers and docents dropped like flies, bequeaths were revoked and some of the wealthiest supporters departed the museum. I can only hope that the Phoenix Art Museum is not headed in the dreaded direction that the Heard Museum experienced after the retirement of the refined and respected Frank Goodyear. After almost a decade, the museum finally secured the talents of David Roche. The gallant knight in shining armor, turned the hemorrhaging museum into an extremely profitable and iconic place once again. Sadly, I was at a cocktail party about 6 years ago where several people boasted that they were about to retire and replace Mr. Ballenger. He is a gentleman who, in his more than 40-year tenure, expanded a dusty little museum to world-class prominence. This entire ordeal reminds me of the now famous saying coined by author Grace Metalious, who shot to skyrocket fame with her novel Peyton Place. England town would become one of the best-selling books of the 20th century. Her rags to riches and rags again tale was well documented in the press. On her death-bed, she conceived one of the greatest sayings still used in our lexicon today. “Better not wish for what you want, you might just get it.” Elsewhere in the museum, we learned that Dennita Sewell has exited the Arizona Costume Institute as its curator. I just can’t believe this has happened! I thought she was ours forever. What a shame. I was introduced to Ms. Sewell in 2001, shortly after I went from reporter to publisher at the magazine. The late great Cheryl Fine suggested that we take Ms. Sewell to lunch at AZ 88. In her years with the Costume Institute, she did extraordinary things and brought international accolades and attention to the Institute. She showcased exhibits that the city had never previously seen and ushered influential people to its stage. We wish her the very best in her new career at ASU. She will be missed tremendously. Speaking of AZ 88, we were fortunate enough to make the guest list for Oscar De Las Salas’s giant birthday party held during the long hot summer. To know Oscar is to love him, (sort of). The guest list read like a Truman Capote party. Everywhere you looked you saw Gary Jackson, Jill Krigsten Riley, Lee Courtney, Missi Harrington, Margaret Anderson, Nicole and Greg Stanton, Lisa Pagel, Richard

Sanderson, Micheline and Bruce Etkin, Tom Evans, Lisa Bell, Erik Peterson, Debbie Gaby and on and on and on. Since I was still handicapped, we crashed the table belonging to J.J. Brewer and Michelle Rooney. They had the best seats in the house. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego declared it Oscar De Las Salas Day for the City. Dear God! We don’t often see the type of energy that the party had. It was truly a spectacular evening. A special thank you to the staff of AZ 88 who literally carried me out the back exit to my scooter. Remember the best time to leave a party, is just as it’s getting started … Shortly before going to press we learned of the passing of socialite A.J. Dickey. Her involvement in all things Native American and especially the Heard Museum were incredible. I always thought she looked just like Jackie Kenney’s Sister Lee Radziwill. She will be missed. BAD SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: Apparently, money still doesn’t buy you class. A very well-known socialite whose rags to riches ascension has shown just that. Her behavior to wait staffs around the globe has left her traveling companions in disbelief and apologetic. How could someone be so rude to people that are only trying to help. All this says is, I’m the most insecure woman in the room. You have all the money and cosmetic work available, and yet you still don’t have any class.

A Man for All Seasons By Barbara Kaplan Oscar De Las Salas came to America from Barranquilla, Columbia, South America to seek his dream which was to work for an architectural firm and reach new personal levels that he knew he would not be able to expand and express freely in his native city. He believed that he had to leave behind the person he no longer wanted to be, to become the best of himself! So, he accepted the position offered and went in search of his dreams. First this led him to cities like Madrid, Padova, Paris, London, Milan and then to Scottsdale where he “found his heart” and made it his home. Now he could finally express the true “Oscar”. Oscar is not afraid to try something he believes in or something that hasn’t been tried before. He trusts deeply in himself, so if he fails, he knows he will get up again. He is a huge advocate for learning, studying and experiencing! And by the way, he strongly practices the rules of etiquette. He feels he is tuned in to needs of people, society or environments. He is always seeking to make whatever it is better and happier! Therefore, his efforts are always for the betterment of the community; which is why every Monday he goes to St. Vincent de Paul to serve. Currently, he is passionate about the light rail becoming accessible to all who need it to leave their neighborhoods for work and enrichment. He loves the world of art and applied performances where he feels at home and says it “enhances us all.” “I am a good draftsman, but before architecture, I learned to draw fashion”. He always had a flare! A sense of good design that juices and inspires him to always seek creativity and innovation.

He was always obsessed with fashion. “I got my talent and interest in fashion from my mother, who designed fabrics and put together costumes and gowns for society people”. As a boy, often after he finished his homework, his mother would take him with her to shop for fashion fabrics and teach him about “good” style. Oscar also seeks the “good” in all people. He wants to make people smile, feel happier and enriched. His footprint for humanity is most important to him even over any financial advantage. Because of his personal experiences growing up; and understanding the value of selfrespect, discipline and elevating anyone he is with; Oscar works with children and teenagers to help build their self-esteem to feel they can accomplish anything they want to do. “I fall in love with what I do!” Everything he does is with boundless energy and kindness. He wants to spread love and joy to all whom he encounters and touches. I asked what does no one know about you? He replied, “That I am shy!” And I think that is what makes up his endearing charm. Oscar is a dynamic man who makes everyone he meets feel they are special and that he is thrilled to be with them! He lives his life every day generating thought-provoking ideas about everything! He lives his life to the fullest as he moves all day from passion to passion. His keen eye that misses nothing, brings his passions to life. What is the history of the Men’s Board and the Charity Golf Classic? • One of the first benefit fundraisers for Fresh Start Women’s Foundation was November, 1995, when Today’s Arizona Woman donated to Fresh Start a portion of the proceeds of their first, to-be-annual, Golden Heart Classic Charity Golf Tournament. • The Fresh Start Men’s Board was formed in 1999 with Brien Kennedy as the first chairman. • The Men’s Board was given The Golden Heart Classic Golf Tournament which Fresh Start had been hosting with Today’s Arizona Woman Success Magazine as their signature event. • The Men’s Board’s First Tournament brought in just under $150,000 which was unheard of back then for a golf tournament. • The tournament has been hosted at Biltmore Country Club, Ancala Golf and Country Club, Starfire, Kierland Golf and now Talking Stick Golf. • Valley Toyota Dealers signed on as the presenting sponsor for the Charity Golf Classic in 2014 and has donated cars every year for a raffle and competitions on the green. • Since the tournament began, golfers have had the opportunity to win cars on holes throughout the course. • Current chair, Brett Angner, has served in his role as a leader of the Men’s Board since 2014. Today, the tournament brings in $350,000 to support women at Fresh Start.

What do you think your greatest accomplishments have been over the last century? • To paraphrase a lyric from Sondheim’s Follies, “We’re Still Here!” – we’ve survived several recessions and a couple of deep depressions, managing to hang on through it all and come out stronger. • Not even WWII could break us – when male leads became impossible to find, we produced shows with all-female casts. We actually added performances, taking shows on the road to servicemen and women around the state. • With the help of the community, we’ve successfully taken the company from the edge of bankruptcy to a $9 million budget with no debt – the largest producing theatre company in the state – and we are on the verge of breaking into the elite circle of “destination theatres” (like La Jolla, the Guthrie and Steppenwolf) who are developing new shows for Broadway runs.

The support of my parents and of my uncle, Gilles Guerithault, who opened the door of Baumanière in Les Baux de Provence for me to begin my culinary career at the age of 16. Where was your first job as a chef in the United States? Le Français Restaurant in Wheeling, Illinois under Chef Jean Banchet.

How did you end up in Phoenix? I had the opportunity to be an executive chef at a restaurant that was opening in Pinnacle Peak named Oaxaca. Vincent’s French Cuisine in Pinnacle Peak was created from that opportunity. What are 3 of your favorite starters, main dishes and desserts? Phoenix chef Nick LaRosa is executive chef and part owner of the Nook Kitchen Arcadia, Nook Kitchen Downtown and also the $10,000.00 winner of the Food Network reality show Chopped. As for the prize money, he says he will donate half to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital to support a friend’s son who had infant leukemia and was treated there.

On a recent visit to the Arcadia location, we were greeted by our server Grae. She was exceptional! She explained some of the menu items to us and was very attentive. Chef LaRosa’s menu focuses on made-from-scratch ingredients. Two custom-made Forno Bravo ovens imported from Italy perfectly char the pizzas which looked delicious coming out of the oven. That will be our next thing to try on a future visit! We opted instead for the crispy brussel sprout chips with maple bacon and aioli for an appetizer and the fig prosciutto bruschetta, followed by a grilled romaine salad with Sicilian anchovies. Our entrees consisted of the chicken marsala, with fresh made linguine, sherry tomatoes in a delectable sauce and the classic bolognese with beef, pork and pappardelle pasta. Both entrees were delicious and bursting with flavor. Again, our server Grae came back several times to check on us and see if we enjoyed it and if we needed anything else. Also, the manager Matt Wohleb came over and he was very gracious and hospitable. We told

him how much we enjoyed the food and how we would definitely be coming back to try some of the other items on the menu! To top it off we had the most amazing dessert called the ooey gooey butter cake with raspberry sauce and lemon crumbles. It was the best thing ever! Please check out The Nook kitchen. Presidents of War by Michael R. Beschloss In “Presidents of War,” author Michael R. Beschloss somehow manages to compile boundless pages on presidents who made world-altering decisions to enter into war. This book is filled with rich history, life lessons and tall tales of the American landscape and the country’s adventures. Starting with James Madison and ending somewhere around current times, the book provides a rare and captive opportunity into the decisions that have shaped our nation. While parts of the piece are a bit sleepy, it quickly comes back to life mainly during the Civil War. Later, during the infancy of World War II,the piece offers a unique view into the prospective of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his utter reluctance to put the United State into the war. However, with the effects of December 7th and the attacks on Pearl Harbor; he is left with little choice. There are also interesting findings regarding the decision of Harry Truman to involve America in Korea. The decision gives the former haberdashery owner a black mark and leaves an atomic America wondering why we got involved in the first place. This exceptional piece also explores countless U.S. Involvements which will include John Kennedy’s decision to enter Vietnam in 1962, a country most Americans did not know existed. Lyndon Johnson escalates the involvement into full-scale war without calling it such. He becomes our country’s greatest Greek tragedy and our nation is ripped apart. A long and excellent read, “Presidents of War” is an excellent gift for the richly paneled libraries of any history buff or political zealot. With so many facts and figures on the chess board, it’s hard to put down. An excellent summer read.
