of the ads showcased John’s exceptionally beautiful wife and top model Holly Barrett. For decades John’s & Co. fashions graced many a Phoenix runway including An Evening of Trends which benefits the Trends Charitable Fund. Holly and John were a beautiful force to be reckoned with and they moved effortlessly in any social circle. Essentially they were a combination of class, style, philanthropy and amazing humor. As the winds of change blew, John constantly reinvented his fine store. Like so many, he had been sold a bill of goods from the developers of The Esplanade. I’m sure John regretted leaving his hugely successful digs at 32nd Street and Camelback Road. Like many others,

John’s & Co. was swept up in the delusional mixed use space that would replace a simple Christmas tree lot at 24th Street and Camelback, where the half-abandoned mall stands today. However, John persevered and moved his store across the street to Biltmore Fashion Park and again met with tremendous success. After decades of amazing advertisements, fashion shows and beautiful clothing, Holly and John quietly closed their store and retired from the retail and philanthropic world. John pursued a successful career in real estate. Everyone ran into Holly and John at AJ’s Fine Foods, where the couple often stopped for refreshments. People like John Coumbe are a rarity in today’s world. He was a kind, soft spoken gentleman with perhaps one of the greatest styles and an even better sense of humor. Everyone in heaven is laughing right now.

Remembering ... Peter Lendrum By Bill Dougherty

When I met Peter and Jamie Lendrum in 1985, I knew they were both high flyers. Peter died this summer surrounded by his family after a long illness. During his successful career Peter had the Midas touch, turning vacant lots into absolute masterpieces of architecture and design. But that was just one of the dynamics of a gentleman who gave back so much to a community that had been so kind to his visions. In 1985 I had the opportunity to be seated at the Heart Ball chaired by Jamie Lendrum. Jamie had created a beautiful ball. She wore a gown purchased in London and along with Peter danced the night away. They were quite the pair. Years later, Joel Cohen and I founded the Guy’s With Hearts dinner at Tarbell’s, for husbands of past Heart Ball chairs. Peter dressed in fine tweed sport coats was almost always in attendance. During those dinners we often sat together discussing our love of architecture and the men and women who had contributed to it. He was terribly upset that so much Mid-Century architecture was falling victim to the wrecking ball. Several years later when Richard Doria, another fine Valley architect, joined the lineup; it was hard for any other gentleman in the group to get a word in edge wise. In his extraordinary life Peter never talked about most of his skyrocketing accomplishments in the fields of architecture, design, planning and landscape. It was not until a Guy’s With Hearts dinner that most of us found out that he was lured to Phoenix by Ralph Haver. The decision would ensure Peter a place in design fame not only in Arizona but throughout the world. He would be internationally recognized and awarded for his magic, yet only brought it up if someone inquired. A great humanitarian and philanthropist, he was a man whose sole goal was to make our world a more beautiful place for all. He had an amazing life and career and he will be missed.

La Dolce Vita The Season October to May Welcome back! From all of us at Trends Magazine and the Trends Charitable Fund. We hope you all had a wonderful and safe summer. Since we last chatted the social season shifted into high gear. We have a lot to tell you and we hope you enjoy getting caught up with all things charitable, chic and beautiful! Pinnacle Aviation became the stunning back drop for the 15th annual Trends/Phoenix Heart Ball photo shoot. Since we started these stunningly beautiful photo sessions, I don’t suspect has anyone been unhappy? Over the years some of the finest specialty stores and greatest jewelers have come together to create a truly amazing experience for all involved. This year Pinnacle Aviation pulled out all the stops and showcased some of the very best private jets in the state. Then B.J. Johnson and new PR czar Ashleigh Shufeldt of Neiman Marcus, good friends to this publication, arrived to adorn Jennifer Carmer, Carolyn Jackson, Kristine Thompson, Nan Howlett and Char Hubble with some truly magnificent ball gowns and even better fine jewelry. This collaborative effort produced an amazing October cover for us. But wait it gets just as good inside the magazine! Scylvia Danese of Danese Creations (one of the best couturiers) designed an array of gowns for the inside pages and Jacqueline Nerguizian tossed a few

heart-stopping fine jewels on the ladies courtesy of JN Jewels. It made for an impressive session and one that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. You should have been there! But if you weren’t, mark your respective calendars for the Phoenix Heart Ball, Saturday Nov ember 19th at The Phoenician. Speaking of the Heart Ball, just a few days later, Char Hubble threw open the doors of her magnificent hill-top estate to the entire committee for the much-anticipated Heart Ball Addressing Luncheon. Everyone flipped when Neiman Marcus arrived with famed designer Rubin Singer in tow. The handsome designer with an even bigger personality and smile delighted this beautiful crowd of well highheeled ladies, first at the cocktail reception where mimosas and expensive champagne flowed and sparkled. After that merrymakers made their way downstairs to the ballroom where they were treated to an opulent fashion show of Mr. Singer’s newest collection and a fabulous lunch courtesy of Fabulous Foods. This event is always the kick off to the season. It’s sort of like your first day of school but with Hermes and Botox injections. You get the picture? Continued on page 10

La Dolce Vita – Continued from page 9 Elsewhere, members of the Arizona Costume Institute always looks forward to their first showcase of the season at their very wellattended 2nd Wednesdays luncheon. Supermodel Pat Cleveland dropped by just a few Wednesdays ago to tout her best-selling autobiography Walking with the Muses. Still stunningly beautiful, an animated Ms. Cleveland wowed the crowd with tails of everyone from Hubert Givenchy to Halston and everyone and every runway in-between. When we were introduced, she looked at me and said “haven’t we met before?” I explained that Susie Wesley, myself and a group of contract models had replaced Ms. Cleveland and the rest of the Halstonettes (a favored troupe of models used exclusively by the late designer). In 1983 Halston sold his name to Norton Simon Inc. The move prevented the designer from choosing models, fabrics and just about everything else associated with his line. It proved disastrous and served as a cautionary tale to other designers as a lesson in greed. Halston never recovered from the multi-million dollar sale and died of AIDS several years later. Anyway, I think the afternoon proved to be one of the most triumphant 2nd Wednesdays in recent memory. That should make Dennita Sewell and Jacquie Dorrance very happy, don’t you think? While on the subject of the Phoenix Art Museum, I can’t forget to mention that lovely Lisa Pagel who managed to oversee more than 300 events a year at Neiman Marcus, is now at the museum too.

Apparently Ms. Pagel landed in a newly created position where she will serve as a liaison between the 12 groups housed within the stately museum. They include: Arizona Costume Institute, Asian Arts Counsel, Collector’s Study Club, Latin American Art Alliance, Contemporary Forum, Friends of European Art, The Men’s Arts Counsel, The Phoenix Art Museum Docents, The Phoenix Art Museum League, Western Art Associates, Infocus and Women’s Metropolitan Arts Counsel. Boy that’s a mouthful! Anyone who knows Ms. Pagel, knows that she’s capable of juggling many hoops at the same time. She does it all with style, class and elegance. Just watch her soar!

In Cocktail Polo News You Should Know: That a petite mean girl is quickly finding that she has been drummed into the corner of the room and is about to be shown the door. That the eye-rolling grandeur of a now well-paid employee is proving a bit too much for volunteers who are thinking less of her by the minute. That a charming and husbandless socialite now appears in flats, so as not to overshadow her next conquest. That a group of ladies that run together don’t seem to realize that one of their own talks smack about the rest and only hangs to satisfy her material needs. Now you’re all caught up for the next 15 minutes.

told me that she was often confused for the actress Natalie Schafer, who rose to international fame playing Lovey Howell on television’s Gilligan’s Island. Since the two ladies had a very similar look, dressed much alike and had an air of sophistication; it’s no surprise that the public often mistook Pat for Ms. Schafer. Pat always said it was a great compliment to a great lady. To List Pat Goldman’s achievements in the community would take more pages than we offer in this publication. Let’s just say that everything she touched she turned to gold and for more than 70 years. Most are simply too numerous to mention, yet Barrow Neurological Foundation and the Phoenix Heart Ball were two of her very favorite “My dear, darling, sweetheart my phone has been ringing off the

become we turned it into a monthly feature. This was until Glenna Shapiro and Marguerite and Jack Clifford came up with an idea called “Dancing with the Stars Arizona.” Trends lost the column and the world gained a woman who would win at the first gala, chair the record-setting second gala and go on to become one of the most respected competitive dancers in the nation. Since we shared the same dance studio, we often rehearsed at the same time. That brought us very close. Linda told me that if Braniff International, the only carrier she could commute on to Dallas, had not gone out of business in 1982, that she would likely be in upper management for Southwest. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2016

Swartz Hopes Everyone Practices Tikkun Olam Beth Ames Swartz, Trends Magazine’s artist-of-the-year, is having an exhibition of her work entitled Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World). We asked her what that means. Swartz says, “Tikkun Olam is the idea that people bear responsibility not only for their own moral, spiritual, and material welfare, but also for the welfare of society at large. In my art, I explore systems of knowledge by translating philosophical concepts into aesthetic visual experiences. For example, my series entitled The Thirteenth Moon was inspired by the three most famous poets in Chinese history: Du Fu, Li Bai, and Wang Wei. Each poet hoped to help heal their society by basing their poetry upon a different philosophy: Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism respectively.” “It is my hope we all may better understand that each others‘ wisdom systems say the same thing ... that all life is sacred.” The Arizona Jewish Historical Society (AZJHS) invites the general public to a free program that includes the Swartz art exhibition and related philosophical discussions beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at 122 E. Culver St., Phoenix 85004. For more information on the AZJHS program and the screening of a film on Swartz and her art,

Although this book was written more than 10 years ago, its popularity caused it to be reprinted just this year. The Wolves at the Door is a tremendous journey from Baltimore affluence to the shacks and farm houses of France for one Virginia Hall. Ms. Hall would go on to become one of the first and greatest American spies during World War II. In 1931 no polished Maryland debutant would have imagined that Virginia Hall, a handsome colt bred for the social elite of charity balls and country club cocktail parties, would simply disappear and end up working for the SOE, a secret espionage faction of Great Britain. It was there that Virginia would learn the tricks of the trade in wartime spy wonderment.

Against such an ominous backdrop of Nazi occupied France; Ms. Hall disguised as an elderly limping lady due to her wooden leg, would help in zone drops of money and weapons needed by the French Resistance to aid in the escape of POWs and downed Allied airmen. She would become the most significant thorn in the side of notorious Nazi Klaus Barbie and would preoccupy the evil man until Germany surrendered in 1945.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

An Evening of Gratitude What sets the JDRF apart from other events? Hollis Volk replied that JDRF was started in 1970 by parents of children with Type One Diabetes. Our organization is propelled by the passion for a cure by the parents and families of children with Type One What makes the evening different this year? We are sold out with 700 guests and have a waiting list! This year the fund raising portion of our Black Tie evening will be as brief as possible so that our guests can have a fabulous fun evening. Why are you chairing this Gala? Our son, Chambers, was diagnosed sixteen years ago. It is Chris’s and my hope that the funds we raise on November 12th will help our son and all other children and adults live free of this pernicious chronic illness and its complications. What do you have planned this year that is a break from the humdrum of other events? We are having our event in the large Alhambra Ballroom of the Montelucia. When this part of the evening is over, our After Party is in the Valencia Ballroom where we will have dancing in a lounge setting. There will be sweet and savory treats in the foyer and cigars, brandy and port outside. Do you have any special entertainment this year? Yes! We have the lovely and talented Jo Watson and the Birdman playing during

our Cocktail Hour, Silent Auction and Dinner. We have the fabulous James Gang of Beverly Hills playing for the After Party. Anything up your sleeve that will set this apart from other Galas? We have a mystery guest that will be performing with James Gang. I am hoping that we will raise over one million dollars net to cure Type One Diabetes. Are you planning a Silent and Live Auction and an Ask this year? These are always components of our Gala Events. We have an amazing Silent Auction with around 150 packages valued at over $200,000 which the week prior to our event will be on line at www.bidpal.net/jdrfpromiseball. Our Live Auction has eight fantastic items. The last portion of our event in the main ballroom is the Fund A Cure where we raise money that goes directly to research. If anyone not attending would like to give to our Fund A Cure, they can contact Karyn Fortin at kfortin@jdrf.org or at 602-224-1819.

Walking with the Muses by Pat Cleveland Reviewed by Bill Dougherty Stalked by Vogue Editor Carrie Donovan in a Harlem subway in 1966, Pat Cleveland had hoped to become a fashion designer. Instead she would go on to become one of the most enigmatic models in history. This year Ms. Cleveland finally decided to sit down and pen her memoirs in Walking with the Muses. The autobiography, already toping the best seller lists, gives readers a front row seat in the famous design houses of Europe in the late 1960s. They include Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, just to mention a few. Yet the book reaches its zenith in the 1970s in America as Bill Blass, Diane von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta and especially Halston explode on the international fashion scene, leaving the rest of the world in its dust. Fresh from The Battle of Versailles at the then dilapidated Palace of Versailles fashion showdown, Pat Cleveland is front and center for everything and quietly absorbs with a smile. The book showcases everything from Ms. Cleveland’s early life in Harlem to international super-model stardom. She remains grounded throughout the book resisting the drug induced 70s and 80s weight loss quick fix. She retains style, grace, wit and an uncanny ability to tell stories so accurately that you think you might very well be there. Anyone interested in high fashion and modeling needs to read this. It’s a true inspiration to all and it’s full of lots of great tales too.

PETS OF THE MONTH

Abby

ChiC & ElEgant Day, Evening and Casual Designer Separates

Abby, a three-year-old Miniature Poodle, was found on the streets by the Arizona Humane Society’s (AHS) rescue team as an injured stray. At that time Abby’s coat was filthy and matted and the tight tangles tugged at her skin causing sores and discomfort. Needless to say, this poor pup was in desperate need of a makeover. Meet Abby at the Campus for Compassion located at 1521 W. Dobbins Road in Phoenix. Her adoption fee includes her spay surgery, medical treatment, and vaccinations. For more information call 602.997.7585 and ask for animal number A541732. Abby may have been adopted by the time you visit the shelter but there are hundreds of other pets in need of a loving home. Atticus

Atticus, a Siamese with lynx point markings, will walk right up to a stranger and start purring and cuddling in their arms. He loves other pets as much as he loves the companionship of people and it isn’t unusual to see him sharing the dog’s bed or playing tag with other frisky felines. The five-month-old can’t resist swatting at a feather wand toy and will chirp when he sees birds out the window. He never jumps on the counters and makes good use of a scratching post. Meet Atticus at the Arizona Humane Society’s Sunnyslope Campus located at 9226 N. 13th Avenue in Phoenix. His adoption fee includes his neuter surgery and vaccinations.
