LETTER FROM THE
Editor
Coming back to the grind of UCSD after studying abroad in Rome this past school year was definitely a lot more difficult than I expected. One of the more challenging aspects about the experience was taking on the a new role in Trend Magazine as the Editor-In-Chief. From being an apprentice to being a stylist/ writer and finally as the new EIC has been a humbling experience. It has made me realize how much work it takes to get a team running and to spread the same amount of passion and drive in everyone. Trend has taught me how willing some people are in seeing a finished product and it’s also taught me how much I, myself, delight in seeing others take great pride in their work. Trend has definitely been through a lot of change. Budget cuts from A.S., changing staff, and a whole new outlook of our magazine overall has played a part in our new issue. Speaking of our new issue: we really wanted to focus on students and how we can highlight what is most relevant and interesting for the UCSD community. “By students, for students” is the mantra I repeated to myself and our staff as we went about tackling whatever news and fashion stories we could cover. Our covergirl, Arielsela, was such an easy and empowering person to work with and I am so excited to share with you all her impact on our school. I am also so thankful that I got work with such an encouraging body of like-minded, yet unique students. Each person is incredibly talented and their multi-tasking skills are out of this world. That being said, I hope you enjoy our latest issue and continue to show support and love (because that’s really all we ask for!). Stay trendy,
Rachel Park Editor-In-Chief

rielsela is not your typical college student. For starters, her name is as unique as the vibes she gives off when she’s in your presence. Even at first glance, she seems quiet and demure but put her in front of a camera and she instantly exudes charisma and charm. She knows exactly how to work her angles and she’s not afraid to flaunt herself, which is exactly what every photographer dreams about when taking portraits. I only met our covergirl in person the day of our photoshoot but I had already heard amazing things about her beforehand. She’s involved in a plethora of organizations on campus and it’s obvious that her confidence comes from the true passion she has in everything she takes part in. It’s truly an honor on our behalf to have her grace our magazine’s cover and to ask a couple questions regarding her life here at UCSD.

8
In t e rv iew: 1. What is your name, year, college? Arielsela H. Smith, 3rd Year, Muir College 2. Describe yourself in 3 words Creative, Strong-willed, Introspective 3. What are some of the orgs you are involved in? The Vagina Monologues @ UCSD, African Student Association, Black Student Union, Kaibigang Pilipin
4. How did you get about becoming a director for the Vagina Monologues? I always tell a story about how when I first auditioned for The Vagina Monologues at UCSD, I barely knew what it was and had actually googled it right before I walked into the audition room! What I got out of it, though, was a surprise family. I got a group of women who empowered me to love and believe in myself and the power of my voice. I chose to become a director because not only did I want to give back to the community that gave so much to me, but I also wanted to expand it into a more dynamic and inclusive space so that more people would be able to access it.
9
5 . W h a t h a s b e e n t h e g re a t e s t challenge being director? The biggest reward? The greatest challenge was definitely the workload. It takes a lot more to put on this show than I had expected; the whole thing was a learning experience. The biggest reward, though, is knowing that you get to have a positive impact on so many lives. Seeing members of the cast and crew grow so much through the experience and carry that knowledge and power into their communities is priceless. Seeing members of the audience rise with us against domestic violence and sexual assault, and having members of the audience take a stand against their own stories as survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence was amazing. Seeing improvements in the production and the community of VagMo because of our work is also very rewarding. 6. How would you describe feminism? Dynamic, political, and multi-faceted are the words that immediately popped into my head. It is something that is defined differently for everyone, but it must be active and inclusive. In my opinion you cannot embrace feminism without embracing its complexities and intersectionalities. You cannot fight for feminism without fighting for all womxn of all identities (be it nationality, race, ethnicity, sexuality, socioeconomic class, ability, age, etc). Yes, you can fight for yourself, your relative, your friend, your SO, etc., but you should also be fighting for all the womxn you or anyone else might call ghetto, slutty, ratchet, hoe, bitchy, or any other derogatory term. Fight for
womxn of marginalized communities and womxn who experience womxnhood differently from how you imagine it. 7. What advice would you give to women, specifically college students, who don't feel confident in their identity as female? If you identify as female, choose what that identity means for yourself. From there, own your truth, own yourself, and own your voice. 8. How would you describe your s t y l e ? W h e r e d o yo u g e t yo u r inspiration from? I would describe my style as eclectic! I get my style inspiration from so many different places! Right now I’m really embracing my African roots, and so I’ve started adding more prints to my wardrobe in addition to playing with different hair styles! I’m also embracing my #BlackGirlMagic and therefore trying to grow my hair out healthy and natural as well as get inspiration from a lot of social media icons, but at the end of the day I always try to make it my own! 9. What are you most looking forward to for the upcoming Spring/Summer season? So spring is actually my favorite season! I love the transitional seasons (spring and fall) because it means my style choice gets to be super dynamic! But spring and summer are also festival/ concert seasons, so I’m excited for those as well as experiencing multiple cultural celebrations!

Indigo Written By: Rafii Priyono
ndigo, one of the most unique dyes on earth. It’s been with us throughout history, and has been used from traditional clothing to jeans. The story of indigo is perhaps the most interesting because of its property to fade and evolve over time. Even more interesting is that whether an Indigo dye is naturally extracted from plants or synthetically made, it still retains this property. One example is a pair of blue jeans; worn long enough it will start to lose its color and gradually become lighter.
This characteristic of indigo, also known as fading, has made its way into contemporary fashion where we see pre-distressed jeans that mimics the unique fading pattern of a hardworn jeans. The trend itself dates back to the early era of jeans, when it is still considered a staple in workwear. Back then, the process of fixating indigo into garments hasn’t been perfected yet and the jeans would quickly lose color in high stress areas (such as the knees and back). As technology progress, we’re now able to recreate that distressed pattern and fixate the indigo to minimize the loss of indigo. However, even a treated pair new of blue jeans will still lose a slight amount of indigo; hence why you’d notice new jeans staining white sheets or sofas. Some people like the fact that nowadays clothing can retain indigo well and maintain the color of it. On the opposite spectrum of that are people that cherish the fading properties of indigo and wear indigo dyed clothing to create the unique fades. To cater to these consumers, some jeans maker has returned to the old way of creating denim and does not chemically fixate the indigo dye. This type of jeans is now commonly called raw or dry denim. The journey of buying a pair of blue jeans and seeing the evolution of the indigo is an experience enjoyed by some. The impact of Indigo dye extends far beyond denim, with some company specializing in indigo-dipped clothing. Some popular examples are indigo dipped T-shirts, button-ups, and even scarves. Some of them does chemically bond the indigo to prevent loss while others just allow the indigo to evolve as it is. Whether you like your indigo staying the same of evolving, there’s no denying that numerous people have fell in love with it; and will continue to love it. 13
Summer Style
CHOOSING THE PERFECT TEE Written By: Rafii Priyono
S
ummer is coming, and it’s time to ditch the thick coats and pull out your shorts and tees. In this article I give some tips on how to choose the perfect tees for summer and make you look good in the heat. There are a lot of important stuff to look for in a perfect t-shirt and some of these is just the main guidelines; don’t forget to add along your own personal style.

Fit
There are several materials that you can choose from that works well in the summer. I recommend either going with a 100% cotton shirt, or a polyester blend (like those in athletic shirts). Why 100% cotton? I find that 100% cotton shirt are very breathable and have that smooth feel to it. If you’re someone that does not sweat a lot, this is the choice for you. On the other hand, Polyester blend are geared towards people that tends to sweat a lot and needs something that can wick away sweat fast (and avoid the armpit wet patch).
I’d recommend getting a shirt with a relaxed fit for summer so that you can get plenty of airflow inside. One of the important part that you need to look out is the space in the sleeve opening. I like to get a shirt that is not too tight in this section so that your under arm gets some nice cool air. For many people, the underarm is one of the major problem spot during the summer, so getting that part nicely ventilated is very crucial to keeping yourself looking fresh. On a side note, I do recommend wearing tight undershirt (think of athletic shirts) if you sweat profusely. This is just as a precautionary so that the sweat doesn’t show on the outside t-shirt. If you do decide to wear an undershirt, make sure the collar of the outside tees sits close to the neck to avoid the undershirt from showing.

There are a couple of different ways you can go for weight, depending on your strategy on managing sweat. If you’re someone who sweats very little, it might be a good idea to get a thicker (8-10oz) shirt that will absorb the sweat but not show on the outside like a puddle. If you’re someone that tends to sweat a lot, getting a lightweight, polyester blend shirt might be the better idea since they wick away sweat really fast.

For the perfect summer tees, I recommend trying out loop-wheeled shirt. This is basically a construction method that spins the yarn into a tube, which creates no side seams in the shirt. Another great thing with loop-wheeled shirt is that the weave is very light and smooth, making it super comfortable. Personally, I’ll wear loop-wheeled shirt all season long, but for the summer I think its extra important since its really comfortable. The only downside to loop-wheeled shirt is that I can be on a higher price range since the machine spins the yarn really slowly (which is why very few make them anymore).
A lot of people say wear light color for summer since they absorb heat less. This is true and it works for people who sweat a little. However, one of the thing I hate about light color shirts is that they easily show sweat patches if you sweat too much. One of my favorite color is grey, since I find that they don’t absorb heat that much, and they can hide wet patches better than bright colors like yellow or red. I’d also recommend black as a last resort if your main goal is not to prevent sweat, but hide it. I find that a heavy black t-shirt hides sweat spots really well and that it’s not that noticeable.
Well, I hope you can use this guidelines to pick the perfect summer t-shirt for yourself and beat the sweat. As for me, my summer t-shirt rotation involves a grey heavy loop-wheeled t-shirt and a black polyester blend shirt (for those days when I’m going to get really wet). Now it’s time to get out and enjoy the sun while being comfy and fresh. 15

“GRANNY” OR“GORGEOUS”?
THE HOTTEST HAIR TRENDS TO EXPERIMENT WITH THIS SUMMER
Written By: Sherilyn Reus

hat comes to your mind when you hear “accessory”? Jewelry? Statement pieces? How about hair? Just like we can switch up our looks and create endless outfit combinations with the typical accessory, our own hair grants us the power to change up our look, too. Since the introduction of bleach and dye in the cosmetic world, we’ve seen hair go from bland to bold. Guys and gals have played with the whole rainbow of colors on their heads, and in the past year, a new color palette trend has emerged: silver and pastel. And from what it seems, the ash-toned craze is here to stay.
Silver and Grays Silver, gray, and even strong ash blondes are all the rage. Diverting from the usual warm and golden blonde, these tones give your hair an edgier look, and often compliment many skin tones. Achieving these colors are best done by a professional, especially if you’re starting with dark hair. However, if you already have light blonde hair, or are simply maintaining your silver hair, you can easily reach these cool tones with the right toner.

“Unicorn” Hair If you’re looking for something more fun, pastel colors are the way to go. Pastel hair is great for people who want to put colors in the hair without it being too pigmented. Lavender, mint, and baby pink are some of the hottest pastel hair colors. Use Pravana VIVIDS color tubes and dilute with a normal white conditioner, mixing in a bowl until you reach your desired color. Then, apply to your lightened hair for an hour and rinse out with cold water. Repeat these every two weeks for a deep-conditioning treatment and to maintain your wonderful color!

If you plan on or currently have lightened hair, you should know that upkeep and maintenance should be the top of your priority list. Without the proper hair care products, your hair can become dry, brittle, and frizzy. Be sure to consider using the products pictured above 1. It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In 2. HOW TO LOOK KANYE FRESH ON A BUDGET Learn how to create and Yeezus outfit that can stunt on your haters, without making your wallet empty. Written By: Hayden Soria
K
anye West is one of the biggest voices in the fashion world today. Everything he touches turns gold, or sells out instantly. He serves as an idol to his millions of fans who want to be just like him. But the reality is not everyone can afford 1000$ plus jeans, or his Yeezy Season 3 clothing where one is able to get a t-shirt for around 200$. This is a guide that will teach you how to create a Kanye inspired outfit that’s super fresh, while at the same time making sure you don’t see a Michael Jordan crying meme when you open your wallet. This outfit is all about looking stylish yet comfortable. Inspired by Kanye’s constant trips from LA to New York to Paris, this outfit is perfect for when you feel like flexing on other students, without having to go the extra distance. 1. The first piece involves the Adidas Ultra Boost. The Ultra Boost retails at 170$, now while that may seem steep there are constant discounts tweeted by sneaker accounts. Currently you can find them for around 140$ if you look around the right places.
26
If you look online on eBay or FlightClub you’ll find the undisputed most popular color way of the ultra boost in all white for around 225-250$. That is way above retail and no one should have to pay those prices. A little tip I have found is checking locally at your malls. I have been lucky to always find popular color ways of the Ultra Boost sitting for retail every time I check out my mall.So before you get hit on the head for some shoes, do a little checking first. What you are getting with the Ultra Boost is the most comfortable pair of shoes in the world. As a testament to having tried on boost technology, once you wear the shoe you will not want to wear anything else. With that being said a shoe that you can use daily, while providing comfort no other shoe can, is a steal in my book. What is great about the Ultra Boosts is that they come primarily in neutral colors, with the most popular being the white, grey, and black color ways. Getting one of these shoes means you can toss it with any other outfit without having to worry about whether it goes with it or not.
winter clothing, but as long as you maintain that color palette mentioned above you’ll be good to go. Another key point in the Kanye look is that his tops tend to be oversized or super long length, this really helps complement the whole outfit especially when your pants have that tailored/slim look.
2. The next piece of the outfit involves the denim. Kanye is a big fan of light wash denim and is seen wearing them almost every time he is shot by paparazzi. While he frequents brands such as Acne and Fear of God, pairs of denim from those brands can range from 250-1000$ dollars. A great alternative is H&M denim. Pairs range from 30-50 dollars. If you really want to get that same designer look and channel your inner Yeezus you can even do the distressing yourself. Kanye is avid fan of distressed clothing, just look at his Yeezy Season 3 line. There are multiple DIY videos on youtube, and it’s a really great way to add a unique personal touch to your clothes. 3. Kanye keeps his tops very simple, using primarily solid color tees and hoodies. However since the spring tends to be warm we’ll stay away from hoodies. To pull of the Kanye look one just needs to stop by H&M and get some simple tees in Olive, Tan, or Sand colors. Kanye’s tops can be difficult to emulate during spring because of his emphasis on fall/
$49.99 H&M
4. The final part of the outfit is a white denim jacket. This is completely optional since the summer heat is coming, but because of the outfit’s versatilely this can be worn on date, going to catch a movie or just a night on the town with your friends. This jacket adds a level of sophistication to the outfit and a nice contrast especially when wearing a black or olive shirt underneath. When worn the jacket will make sure no one is sleeping on your outfits. A common theme in this outfit is that you’re able to get all these clothes on the low at H&M. This just proves that you don’t have to break the bank just to look Kanye Fresh. Follow this guide and you’ll be stunting on everyone in no time. 27

eet Claire Maniti, one of our feature student! She’s rocking dark colors in this shoot, and it definitely looks great on her! We did a little interview with her to get to know her a littlebetter. Check it out below!
T: Wow that’s cool! So what’s your favorite clothing brand?
Trend: Hi Claire, thanks for having this interview. Would you mind telling us a little bit aboutyourself and the activities you’re a part of on campus.
C: Coclico has some amazing minimalist boots, and I'm in love with them.
Claire: I’m the Chairwoman of the University Centers Advisory Board, which oversees new projects, retail vendors, and budgets at the Price Center and the original Student Center. I’m also the Manager for Elections at UCSD and an RA at ERC.
C: Topshop! T: What about your favorite footwear brand?
T: Favorite fashion accessory? C: A necklace from Vrai and Oro which my favorite person gave me on my birthday T: So, who’s your biggest style inspiration. C: Alexander Wang! He wears a lot of black, and is basically my all-black wardrobe inspiration. And maybe Wednesday Addams.
T: I just have to ask; you seem to really like black colored clothes. Any particular reason or storybehind it?
T: All right last question! Picture a nice hot San Diego Summer Day. What’ll be your perfectoutfit?
C: I used to wear colorful clothes when I was younger, but when my grandmother passed away I wore black in mourning and it stuck with me since. I think people notice me more and its less distracting.
C: A black t-shirt in a thin fabric, an a-line skirt, and lots of gold jewelry.

here in the world are our Trend alumni today? As she finishes up her trip in Asia, we caught up with former editor in chief of Trend Magazine, Stephanie Tsao, to discuss how her life has evolved since her days as an undergraduate at UCSD to today.
Trend: Tell us about yourself and what you have been up to since graduating from UCSD
Trend alumni working for major brands such as Calvin Klein and Tory Burch.
Stephanie: Currently, I am capping off my 6-month Asia trip spending my final week in Sri Lanka, but here’s a little break down of the last few years. I graduated from UCSD Eleanor Roosevelt College in 2012 with a major in International Studies. During my junior year, I interned at lifestyle public relations firm Bay Bird Inc., worked for Lancôme as an artist and led Trend Magazine as editor in chief. After graduating, I was a public relations representative for Los Angelesbased fashion design label M Dot Design Studios where I managed digital marketing campaigns, coordinated events and supported pop-up boutiques at the W Hotels. When I moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area, I decided to venture into something new, and that was technology. I worked at public relations agency Racepoint Global supporting media strategies for clients in technology, consumer and healthcare. While I loved my job, I felt ready to travel, a desire that stems back to my undergraduate days. Traveling to foreign countries would expose me to new opportunities for impact which could also reflect ways we can help our communities back home.
S: Most of my inspirations come from history, art, literature, films and the people I meet. I love seeing how aspects of today correlate with historical trends, cultures and events. Additionally, my maternal grandfather taught me that the world is always changing and there is always something to learn from it.
T: What role did you have in Trend Magazine and what did you enjoy most about it? S: I was editor in chief from 2011 to 2012 overseeing project timelines and ensuring that all departments operated smoothly during the production of two magazine issues, fashion shows and launch parties. My favorite part as editor in chief was witnessing the paths that these girls have taken since I first started working with them. Some of these ladies found their dream career paths while working on the team and others developed new skills that they would leverage in the future. Allowing staff members to volunteer in in other departments helped them grow and learn more about themselves. Today, there are
T: Where do you pull inspiration from?
T: Which city or country have you enjoyed the most so far? S: Although every country has been a unique experience in its own way, Vietnam was one of my favorites. It has been influenced by different cultures including French and Chinese so there is a traditional yet exotic story behind the country’s food, cityscape and history. It was fulfilling getting to know Vietnam outside of the textbook and learning about how it has developed since the Vietnam War. Coffee connoisseurs will also love this place. Sri Lanka was also an eye-opening experience, as mass tourism is still relatively young due to the war that ceased less than 2 years ago. Because of that, you will feel like you’re off the beaten track everywhere you go. Sri Lanka has been ruled by many foreign nations in the past including the Dutch, Portuguese and British who have all left behind their own layers of influence throughout the country. The wildlife here is incredible. Wild elephants can be spotted roaming freely outside of the safaris after dark T: Do you have any tips for college students who aspire to travel after graduating? S: There’s no real “right” way to travel since everyone has their own interests, budgets and curiosities but keep your ears open for tips and ideas. If there’s a place you really want to go, then go as long as you stay up to date with current news to see if the current status of the destination is fit and safe. Take some time to study local prices, transportation options (and lack of in some countries) and warnings regarding tourist scams.
