welcome to the issue Hello beautiful readers! Thank you for gracing us with your presence and picking up a copy of our first issue of Trend. We have 34 pages of fashion in store for you, from the best looks for fall, to the versatility of an LBD, to how to dress up for a night in beautiful downtown San Diego. For those of you new to the San Diego area, we have the best clubs, bars, and restaurants for every day of the week, so stay tuned for where to go for the best (and most delicious) deals. We love to have the opportunity to introduce you to our talented cover girl, Shaida Tafreshi, who describes her love of fashion with as much enthusiasm as the philanthropy she has become involved with throughout her time at UCSD. The rest of our talented models hail from our very own greater San Diego area. One of our goals for this magazine is to celebrate beauty, creativity, and great style. This summer we had the privilege of working with talented designers such as Stacie May and Jeffrey Parish who shared their innovative creations with us. We had the opportunity to work with several local boutiques and salons, from Capricorn in Birdrock to Detour in Encinitas. We greatly appreciate this support from our local San Diego stores and designers, without whom the fashions featured in this issue would not have been possible. The talented members of this magazine have been working hard all summer to bring you the best for fall. We are always looking for new members who share our passion for writing, creating, and capturing the beauty and charm of everyday life. Thank you for embarking on this journey with us, and we hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it.

LOVEALWAYS,

ALICE & GLORIA

LBD. A ubiquitous acronym in the world of fashion, constantly modernized, yet always reliably in style. The luxury of the little black dress is that it can go with anything, updated with the season’s heels, jewelry, and belts. To showcase the versatility and enduring nature of the LBD, we took five beautiful ladies and five signature LBDs, dressed them up with beautiful accessories from Capricorn Boutique in Birdrock, and let them show us their individual style and personality. Capricorn owners Krissy Heinz and Lisa Ovadia have a combined 10 years of experience working in buying for and managing local boutiques, and decided to put their fashion savvy to the test by giving laid-back San Diegans a taste of high fashion that can be incorporated into every day life. These ladies strive to give their customers good quality items, insisting that “putting your money toward good quality and timeless pieces that you can wear over and over” should be the way every It-girl shops. By wearing something that makes you feel good, like a little black dress, you can experiment with classic accessories that can take the style up several notches.

The LBD lends itself to bold, statement pieces, such as a fabulously glamorous vintage Gold and Pearl Suspender Choker Necklace by Micha Design, a standout piece that truly shines on a simple, yet formfitting LBD, modeled by our very own Sandra. To channel a classic 40s look and compliment a tiered lace LBD, style with a Vintage Brass Bow & Tassel Necklace with Crystal Pendant by Archive, and top it off with a Swarovski Crystal Ring by Elizabeth C, modeled by Erin. For an edgier look, try a Crystal Onyz Fan Necklace by Smith, modeled by Bridgétt. For simplicity yet sheer elegance, try Clarisse’s Vintage Button ring by Micha Design, a large brass bracelet and a Silver Slider Bead Necklace by Vanessa Mooney. Almara shows how LBDs don’t have to be sleeveless, showing some sparkle with a Vintage Multi Chain Bracelet by Micha Design, Swarovski Crystal Right by Elizabeth Cole, and Gold Filigree earrings by Allison Neumann.

As these five beautiful women prove, the LBD can function on any and every body type. It can channel all kinds of feelings, from sheer elegance to delicate beauty, bold fearlessness to simple sexiness. Paired with luxurious locks and the perfect pair of heels, the 6 LBD is just that: perfection.

PUT MOISTURIZER ON ALONE, OR TRY MIXING YOUR NORMAL FOUNDATION WITH YOUR DAILY MOISTURIZER FOR A LESS HEAVY CONSISTENCY THAT WILL STILL COVER ANY BLEMISHES ON YOUR FACE. IF NEEDED, USE CONCEALER FOR ADDITIONAL COVERAGE. AFTER, SET WITH A POWDER, SUCH AS MAYBELLINE’S LIGHTWEIGHT DREAM MATTE POWDER. FOR A NATURAL FLUSH, DUST ON A PEACHY/PINK BLUSH.

BLOT AWAY ANY OIL FROM YOUR FACE AND DUST ON MORE FACE POWDER. TO ADD MORE COLOR, REAPPLY A SLIGHTLY DARKER BLUSH, LIKE A PLUMMY, PINK SHADE.

SWEEP A SHIMMERY CHAMPAGNE COLOR ALL OVER THE EYELIDS, THEN PLACE A SHADE DARKER THAN YOUR SKIN TONE IN THE CREASE TO ADD DEPTH. NEXT, LINE THE UPPER LASHLINE, CURL THE LASHES, AND FINISH WITH YOUR FAVORITE MASCARA. DON’T FORGET YOUR EYEBROWS -- SHADING THEM IN WITH AN EYEBROW PENCIL WILL FRAME YOUR WHOLE FACE, BUT BE SURE TO FOLLOW YOUR NATURAL ARCH.

ADD A DARKER SHADE LIKE GREY OR BLACK INTO THE CREASE FOR MORE DIMENSION AND A DRAMATIC, SMOKY EFFECT. FOR LINER, SIMPLY WING OUT YOUR DAY LINER FOR A CAT EYE (TRY A LIQUID EYELINER FOR THIS). LINE THE BOTTOM LASHLINE WITH A BLACK PENCIL LINER. ADD FALSE EYELASHES, MASCARA AND YOUR EYES ARE DONE!

AFTER PREPPING THE LIPS WITH A BALM, APPLY YOUR FAVORITE LIGHT PINK LIPGLOSS.

By Bridgétt Rangel-Rexford Rolling waves make us dream of destinations. The reflection of a sunset on the water induces romance. The sea breeze cleanses the mind and spirit. But that is not all the ocean makes us do. The ocean also influences our fashion. Our proximity to the seaside influences the way we dress. San Diego’s climate is often considered the best in California, if not the world. As students of San Diego, we are fortunate enough to live right next to Pacific Ocean. Some of us are only a few minutes away from sandy beaches and rolling waves. Now, how much of that influences our fashion? When stores begin stocking coats and scarves, prepping for a chilly fall, we are still styling shorts and sandals. During September and October in La Jolla, the temperature is just right for shorts and tank tops. La Jolla climate spares us the need to buy puffy jackets and woolen mittens. The ocean influences our clothing patterns as well. Take the quintessential nautical stripe, for instance, as it is exhibited in everything from dresses to classic t-shirts. The striped shirt dates back to 19th century France when fishermen wore it as part of their uniform, reflecting repeated stripes, like rolling ocean waves. When we dress in nautical stripes, we pay homage to the ocean in our backyard. Our shoes also reflect our proximity to the beach. One shoe that never disappears from UCSD fashion is the boat shoe. Seafaring slip-ons are not only charming but easy to kick off at your leisure when you want to feel the soft sand between your toes. Next time you feel inclined to wear any of the aforementioned clothing, you can attribute it to the ocean we live next to. The ocean is undeniably a luxury that we should not take for granted. The clothes that the ocean inspires us to wear are in fact leisurely items: they allow for free movement of the arms and legs. It is as if the ocean is not just inviting, but encouraging us to take a twirl in the tides and enjoy the perfect weather outside. Sometimes, she is so convincing that it makes us leave our homework at our desks and spend all our time lounging on the shores.

n undergraduate student studying Communication at UCSD holds a national leadership role in her sorority is actually a descendent of Iranian royalty. Too difficult to comprehend? It’s all true and I had the honor to meet the straight-thinking, ambitious young woman

By Bridgétt Rangel-Rexford Staff Writer While sipping my almost-cold Kava tea, I glanced at the time: five o’clock in the afternoon. Miss Shaida had just arrived. The staff hurried up the stairs to greet her. Dressed in a tailored white dress and Christian Louboutin shoes, Miss Shaida clicked her heels towards us while balancing countless bags of dresses and boxes of shoes in her hands. When everyone was finally settled, Shaida sat upon the stool and we began beautifying the already gorgeous cover girl. As she lounged, pampered by our stylists, I slid a chair next to her and commenced the interview. Shaida, while pointing to my notepad, “Well I am royalty, that’s interesting right? Let’s talk about it.” I nodded approvingly and she began to tell me her family’s past. Her mother is from the Ansari family, part of the elite royalty from Iran, and her maternal grandfather was knighted “Amiri” meaning “king” or “leader”. She proceeded to detail a family tree full of successful, prosperous members, four of whom have been high-ranking government officials. “I have family all over the world!” Miss Tafreshi announced proudly. She literally does. Besides the officials stationed in England, France, Finland among others, her extended family resides in numerous countries all around the world. Shaida herself has had the pleasure of globe trotting, traveling to England, France, Jamaica, Canada, Australia, Turkey and, of course, her family’s homeland of Iran on many different occasions. As many would suppose, this princess has a thing for clothes, but her love of shoes, specifically heels, surpasses all other garments. Shaida enthusiastically proclaimed that she was “born in heels!” before I could even ask another question. Her favorite pair of heels are Christian Louboutin, but if she must wear flats, she prefers Chanel’s line. She apologetically sighed, “It sounds really spoiled, I know,” when talking about her favorite brands. But really, what girl does not dream of wearing the best of the best? It sounds like a dream come true. Although Shaida loves designer clothing, she also enjoys finding vintage, hand-me-downs, and rare finds at the flea market. In fact, she alleges she is complimented the most and feels the best when she wears vintage clothing.

15

Although Miss Shaida Tafreshi is a bona fide Persian princess, she does not expect things to be handed to her on a platter. Shaida is a diligent student who not only goes the extra mile for projects, but also involved in and takes a great deal of pride in her work. She is a member UCSD’s sorority Pi Beta Phi and president of Phi Sigma Theta Honor Society, positions she takes great pride in. “As a leader, you help drive the process, and put your mark on the chapter. You also gain the valuable experience that can be built upon throughout a future career.” Her role has a laundry list of responsibilities which, not coincidentally, she had already made momentous fundraising towards. Her sorority has raised the most money at UCSD, working to support First Book, a national charity that focuses providing tutoring services, creating after school programs, and donating books to children in low income communities. “I love working with and for children, it’s the most satisfying thing I could do,” said Shaida, who hopes to continue charity work in the future. When asked what her career aspirations were, she immediately mentioned that although she intends to become a lawyer, her real passion lies in entertainment or fashion. She aspires to work in both fields and create an ongoing business. Shaida, like many of us feels the future is uncertain, but she also feels hopeful. In regards to fashion, she noted her early involvement in the industry, remembering, “I used to sell jewelry to consignment shops when I was ten.” Shaida has dressed herself since she was three years old, and to this day never leaves the house unless her hair is presentable. Regardless of where her career takes her, she intends to continue her philanthropy. She is particularly interested in working with Make-A-Wish Foundation in addition to First Book, making an effort to give back to her community. Shaida affirms that she is really just “your average Calabasas girl” who wants to make a difference in children’s lives. Though she intends to apply to law school after her Spring 2011 graduation, she still believes in her dreams of entering the fashion world. With her determination and confidence evident in every aspect of her life, this Persian princess will undoubtedly continue to leave her mark on the world. Dress, Hervé Léger

S

chool is back in session and you have a lot on your mind. Questions flood your mind like: What are my classes going to be like? Who will I meet? How can I possibly make it from York Hall to Pepper Canyon in 10 minutes? But the real question is, “What to wear?” Let’s face it. As college students, our wealth is limited to knowledge and we are famously short on cash. However, being on a budget does not mean you need to sacrifice a fantastic wardrobe. The solution? Thrift shopping! For many people, the very thought of visiting a thrift store is unpleasant. Thrift type stores are often mistakenly thought of as smelly, messy, and full of useless and ugly clothing leftover from decades past. While sometimes this may hold true, San Diego happens to have an abundance of high quality thrift shops located on Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest. This famous street has three crazy cool shops: Luigi Vera, Flashbacks, and Buffalo Exchange. They are filled with a cornucopia of items such as accessories, shoes and clothing simply waiting for you to rediscover and claim as your own. These stores are truly stress-free. There is no need to rummage through pile upon pile of clothing while kicking aside fallen, mismatched socks. Each round rack is either individually labeled or at least organized into similar categories. At the same time, one of the appeals of thrift store shopping is the fact that you do get to go search for items like a treasure hunt and these three stores still cater to this appeal.

Everyone is always hoping they find that crazy cool antique, extraordinary collectible or rare gem of an item at a thrift store. The search is very much part of the fun! So the question is, at Luigi Vera, Flashbacks, and Buffalo Exchange just what can you expect to find? These stores, with the exception of Luigi Vera, are specifically clothing only stores. Luigi Vera provides a small collection of records in addition to an assortment of clothing and accessories. At Flashbacks, you can push through the decades of fantastic fashion. You can find daily wear or costumes to match any era. Buffalo Exchange is an animal of a store, but a nice one at that. If you are looking for an urban bohemian look, they are the ones to visit. Luigi Vera, Flashbacks, and Buffalo Exchange are all known for their designer treasures. It’s just a matter of who gets to them first! Getting there is trouble free. Hop on the bus to get their easily and not have to deal with parking. Luigi Vera 3934 5th Avenue San Diego, CA Flashbacks 3849 5th Avenue San Diego, CA Buffalo Exchange 3862 5th Avenue, San Diego
