Twenty-three years ago... Editors: Silvia Leperre Armando Doménech Collaborators: Nito Foncuberta, Nicolas Brehm, Elsa Charlier,

wenty-three years have passed since that rainy night when I first arrived in Las Terrenas, where I found shelter in a simple but comfortable bungalow -I’d heard about in Barcelona- located on the edge of “the swamp”; a wetland filled with birdlife then occupying twice its current area, where rice was still being cultivated and fishing took place in the canals. Many memories still remain of that pre-electric era, but I search not for the nostalgic complicity of those who believe all times past were better, because my life walks simultaneously along the path of “retrodevelopment” into the future´s complexity and its origin. In Las Terrenas I have lived this process in a very particular way.
Clarisse Piveteau Translation: Laura Perdomo The content and advertisements
As expected, since the arrival of electricity profound changes have taken place in both form and substance. The resulting population explosion has transformed the society, economy and landscape. Wood has been replaced by concrete, caliche by asphalt and the pace of time has accelerated, leaving the “al paso” lifestyle for the turmoil of material productivity. And meanwhile, birds no longer populate “the swamp.”

Many of us came to this hospitable land hungry for nature, looking for a more humanized vital space in which to grow as persons, find a livelihood or just survive, and “all” looking to improve our existence; however, in a torrent society such as this one it is human ergo inevitable that we tend to slavishly reproduce the same tics and stereotypes of our hometowns and our past.

As in every society, progress understood as development, leads to an increased complexity that demands organizational effort in order to make it sustainable. This effort is what I miss in this emerging community. Not only do I refer to the need of respecting the master plan for urban planning (which I do), and of once and for all addressing the waste treatment problems (which I do). I also refer to prioritizing investments in education and public health because development is meaningless when it fails to provide further opportunities for “all” people to progress and without education and health social well-being will hardly be achieved. In this regard, I believe that cooperation is a much deeper breath than mere competition and should be the formula to establish coexistence in a multicultural society such as Las Terrenas. I think the majority of us place generosity and solidarity before greed and pettiness; those who do not confuse selfishness with scoundrel behavior. There is still time for Las Terrenas to continue to be a special place in an increasingly globalized world. This requires that we respect its authentic capital -the natural environment and progressively diminishing biodiversity- and continue to provide the required solidarity so no one is left dangling without progress.

The more “public level of the villa blends the interior with the exterior, the inside with the outside, the colors and lights. hat does ecology in architecture mean? To build efficient low-energy projects, that allow for the appreciation of the surrounding nature. Projects that move us and open us to the world. Yoann Charlier, a fervent follower of Taoist philosophy, believes the main objective is to integrate with nature in a manner that is consonant and harmonious. He lacks not the inspiration, determination, methodology or the technology to propose architectural spaces with the utmost respect for the environment. Villas Quisqueya and Villas Vitao, his two existing projects, show it. The villas are balanced. They have a solid foundation and content, are climate-proofed and extremely flexible to the needs of the tenants. Location, orientation, sun exposure... are some of the variables considered in order to achieve this goal. The homes are powered by latest-generation solar panels. They also provide natural drinking water thanks to a chemical-free, slow filtration system and are valued for their innovative, economic and eco-sustainable wastewater
treatment system that uses earthworm-based technology for water purification. The pools are treated solely with salt which guarantees fresh, crystalline, odorless, non-irritating water, ideal for children.

Yoann and Elsa’s, his wife and partner, master craftsmanship in using a variety of surprising materials: twisted branches, bamboo, aged iron... fulfills all expectations, creating a lovely and unique lifestyle. The interiors are functional and placed with particular care to balance natural light with the living spaces, while whitepolished concrete floors convey a contemporary look. Colors and materials follow the principles of Feng Shui which promote the free flow of positive energy. Quality accessories achieve an elegant simplicity, an ambiance where we feel instinctively well. In Las Terrenas, Vitao stands for ecological and modern style, a concept with a promising future: to see it with your own eyes visit the new Vitao construction stages or entrust them with your personalized project, under the eco-zen theme, naturally. www.villasvitao.com Photos: Guillaume Roig, Armando DomÊnech .

oma Bonita is possibly the most attractive site in Las Terrenas. A step away from the best beaches in the area and just a 5-minute drive from the town center, the house is like a large balcony facing the sea overlooking Playa Maric贸 at one side, Playa Bonita at another and further beyond Playa Cos贸n. Opposite to the house is the fittingly named Playa Perdida (lost beach), a fairly unknown small cove.
Casa Phil captivates and takes over the spirit of the place. It is both a beach house and an urban-style home. asked Antonella Bellan, founder of Antlantica, where she got the idea of importing Italian-style kitchens to Las Terrenas. Very simply she replied that coming from a family of builders she has always had a passion for the business. Once settled in Las Terrenas in the year 1996, she decided in 2005 to import Italian modular kitchens and appliances, which are more modern, versatile and have top quality design; they also have Italian standard manufacturing. A good idea if not properly developed is just an idea. Knowingly this charming Italian woman rolled up her sleeves and got to work with tenacity, character and will power in full effect. She contacted one of the best brands of Italian kitchens (Arrex Spa) and another of major appliances (Barazza Srl); companies with over 60 years of

Fill your life with color... W Elsa Charlier and Clarisse Piveteau Designers and Decorators of Be Design
COLOR 2014
48 insamana
hether you are attracted to the classic, urban, rural or industrial style, color is the basis for decor... the use of a tone over another allows us to re-size spaces, modify volumes, define an environment and even mitigate certain defects.
In the color wheel, warm colors are distinguished from cool colors and their powers are often summarized in decorating.
For example, to create the impression of height in a low-ceilinged room, use a light color that will “descend” on the walls. This effect may be enhanced by adding vertical stripes. On the other hand, to lessen the height, choose a light tone on the background wall and bolder colors for the other walls.
· Yellow is a luminous color. It is the opening, clarity, brilliance, nobility. It stimulates the psyche and therefore promotes concentration, organization... Ideal for work places...
Warm colors generate warm and intimate environments because the room will seem much smaller. They evoke sunshine, clarity...
· Orange, like yellow, stimulates
the intellect. It has a certain effect on the mood, rejects dark thoughts and invites a smile.
·
Pink and red tones are not often used for our walls. However, they allow for a wide variety of looks. Red is anything but a soothing color... some are convinced that it enervates, others say it favors concentration and creativity.
· Violet invites serenity, meditation, spirituality, tenderness and sensitivity. It is the trending color for 2014. Its multiple shades offer infinite
possibilities for interiors.
Cool colors enlarge a space, giving the impression of an airy and open living room with a peaceful environment. · Blue is wisdom, fantasy, calmness, relaxation, creativity. There are so many shades of blue that this gentle color is suited for any interior. Blue, aerial, buoyant, “cold” where an area calls us to infinity. · Green signals rest, nature, balance. A color of multiple hues that convey numerous
effects. It is the reigning color of tranquility. The placement of vegetables in a room has beneficial results on the mind. Our perception of color is also very personal. A peaceful environment for one person may prove stressful to another. It is therefore difficult to generalize. In short... all colors are pretty, but they need to be adequately harmonized in order to fully exploit their beauty. Have fun, colors exist to brighten and beautify your every day. The important thing is to add some color to your life!

Aquatic environments threatened
F
reshwater in the Dominican Republic is relatively abundant compared to some other Caribbean islands (St Martin, Spanish Virgin Islands…). However, this vital resource is experiencing numerous assaults across the country but also on our beautiful Samana peninsula. These anthropogenic impacts, meaning impacts due to human activities, are first quantitative. Global warming has of course an impact on the freshwater resources of our country. But more importantly, the Dominican Republic sees its agriculture grow intensively, drawing unlimited water supplies from the water resources of the island. In spite of a strict national legislation on water, the instream flow regime is never complied with. This is sadly obvious everywhere in the country: the famous Cascada del Limon is a recent example. We all observed visually in recent months the weakening of the flow of water that feeds it, and its impact on the width of the normally spectacular waterfall. This sudden decrease is simply due to agricultural use upstream. Thus, not only the ecology of the river is heavily impacted but also the entire tourist life revolving around this place. The same problem can also be seen in the rest of the country: the Río Nigua in San Cristóbal, the Río Yaque del Norte in Villa

Vásquez, etc. All those rivers lack water all year round mainly because of rice, sugar cane and banana plantations. In addition, there are also quality issues. The country suffers indeed from a sanitation problem in most of its cities. Many discharges of urban and industrial wastewater are directed to these rivers whose flow is already very low. This concentrates even further a pollution which not only has environmental impacts on water quality and aquatic life, but also has significant consequences on public health. To address this situation, public authorities are gradually taking significant positions. One example is the construction of wastewater treatment plants in five municipalities lacking sanitation: San Cristóbal, Montecristi-Villa Vásquez, Azua, Neiba and San José de Ocoa. Tourism and real estate projects must also meet more and more stringent constraints related to sanitation, from the Ministries of Environment, Tourism and Public Health. Another example are industries (large and small) that have regular controls at the outlet of their treatment plants. So things are getting better but the economic development needs of the country do not always support in fact this growing awareness. The current development of eco-tourism should strengthen this ongoing process of Dominican watercourse protection. Still, it is the duty of all of us, at any level, to act to protect our water resources. To begin with, let’s save water every day!
