appiness doesn´t lie in the material things we own – quite the contrary - happiness lies in the memories we treasure. We are the sum total of our experiences so we should invest the most in creating memories of our experiences and personal lessons, like those created when travelling. Buying new things is an exciting experience at first but we soon get used to our purchases. We can make up for a few tough weeks by buying a new outfit or a having night out on the town but we should invest more in experiences that go to create lifelong memories. The idea of seeing new places, making new friends, trying exotic dishes, in short, embarking on a new adventure, is stimulating and leads to a variety of mostly positive emotions, starting with curiosity and discovery. These emotions are linked to the things we experience during our travels and therefore we associate the memory with the emotion. When we evoke the memory, we evoke the emotion.

amanรก Peninsula has long been an undiscovered, if not totally ignored, paradise. Because it was difficult to get to tourism development began late and very shyly. The first travelers to visit these shores at the end of the 70s made a sort of pact not to tell anyone else about this idyllic hideaway. However, someone must have let the cat out of the bag because friends and friend of friends slowly began arriving, forging the way for a handful of tourists who gradually became more and more numerous, everyone captivated by the nature and authenticity of this exceptionally beautiful place. Once a simple fishing village Las Terrenas is now one of the prettiest coastal towns in the country, its es-

sence being a mix of extreme simplicity and incredible sophistication and that is its key to success. Las Terrenas is quite cosmopolitan and continuously evolving thanks to its improved infrastructures and the cultural input and experiences of newcomers. Locals and foreign residents alike are part of a diverse community looking for an enriching life style: artists, business people, professionals, bon vivants and, of course, those involved in a variety of tourism related activities, all go to make up this rather unusual potpourri which is at the same time very much in touch with its Caribbean roots. French, Creole, Italian, English, German, Portuguese and Russian are just some of the languages we hear 21

in every day conversation. There are no language barriers here we all go from one language to another without even realizing it. This eclectic town has everything a visitor could want, from restaurants offering culinary delights from around the world, to beach bars and cocktail bars, comfortable hotels to suit everyone´s budget, sports, entertainment, shops, services and a unique laid back atmosphere that is so much fun night and day. Walking along the bustling Duarte Street or Carmen Street, which intersect at both ends of the town, fills us with the essence and charm of Dominican life.

Both streets are bursting with shops of every kind and the constant coming and going on the sidewalks draws the visitor into the pulsing heart of the country. Taking a “motoconcho” (motorcycle taxi) or a “guagua” (local bus) to get around, trying out some sancocho (traditional local soup) or dulce de leche (dessert) or launching yourself into the rhythm of bachata are experiences not to be missed, letting you fully enjoy Dominican generosity and their zest for life.

THE JEWELS OF THE SAMANÁ PENINSULA

he assorted beaches in and around Las Terrenas are worthy of any five star hotel, but you won´t find striped umbrellas here, just the shade of palm trees, almond trees and wild sea grape. LOS HAITISES NATIONAL PARK

ocated to the south of SamanĂĄ Bay the park can be reached by boat, navigating between the limestone islets measuring 20 to 40 meters in height.

Haitises, which in Taino language means highland or mountain land, for millions of years hid vast caves where the Taino Indians lived in peace for centuries until the arrival of the European settlers. Rock carvings and pre-Columbian drawings are silent witnesses to their presence. Visiting the caves, navigating through the mangroves, surprising the courting pelicans, frigates or seagulls adds to the romanticism of this exceptional site.

WHALE WATCHING

amanรก Bay is the best place in the entire Caribbean to observe the humpback whales.

These spectacular mammals weighing up to 40 tons can be seen in the warm waters of the bay where they come to mate and give birth each year from mid December through mid March. During this season they stop eating and survive on their reserves of fat while dedicating their time to reproducing or caring for their young. A truly exciting and often thrilling excursion To find out more you can visit the Whale Museum which details the epic journey made by hundreds of

cetaceans from northern sanctuaries to the Bay of Samanรก each year.

EL LIMร N WATERFALL

ou will need around 45 minutes to get to the waterfall whether on horseback or on foot. Standing 50 meters tall, with it moss covered wall and spectacular surroundings, El Limรณn waterfall has a natural pool to cool off in after the trek. An absolute must for anyone visiting the peninsula!

Stop off on the way to Playa Rincรณn to visit the modest iguana sanctuary and see the Iguana Rinoceronte (Cyluria cornuta), an endemic species to the island. A fun day in the wild!

n imposing marble cliff acts as a buttress for the cove where this discreet, charming unspoiled beach lies, characterized by its beautiful waters and perfect for those who love solitude. Practically inaccessible by land, Playa Frontรณn is a 20 minute boat ride from Las Galeras. Take food and water if you are planning on staying for a few hours as there are no services available on the beach. Why

EL VALLE BEACH

A couple of restaurants on the beach are just the place to try out some fresh fish but be careful swimming as the currents are very strong. ACTIVE VACATION

ot surprisingly, Las Terrenas is outstanding for all water sports: kitesurf, surf, paddle board, sailing, kayak, scuba diving, fishing, etc. A number of schools offer lessons in all these sports for all ages and in all languages. You can also practice you favorite sports, like tennis, cycling, jogging, soccer, baseball, gymnastics, pilates, or even learn to dance to Latin rhythms. No doubt about it, Las Terrenas has a sporty atmosphere! In May, the local Sailing Club organizes a big regatta at Playa Las Ballenas: two very intense days of competitions in a qualifying event for the Dominican

Sailing Championship which brings youngsters and adults together in the Optimist, Laser and Sun Fish categories. Whereas mid-February sees Festivela at Punta Popy, a meet where kite and water sport enthusiasts gather over a weekend devoted entirely to competition, a really popular colorful event thanks to the dozens of multicolored sails flying around.
