W
hen watching a movie or a program on TV and, an ad for a holiday destination comes on in the middle of 30 other ads, do you really think people go to that place because of the generally mediocre advertisement? And if that´s not the case, if the ad doesn´t work, what motivates us to choose one holiday destination over another? An ad on TV lasts a few seconds and hardly gets noticed. On the other hand, reports, documentaries, articles, books and photographs are far more real influences... we choose them so they have our attention. Some of these influences, the ones that spark our imagination, might even stay with us for years. Another reason for picking a holiday destination is to go see someone who lives there. There is no better way to visit a place than to have a friend that serves as a guide, and if on top of that they help out with accommodation... Undoubtedly, it´s one of the most common factors when deciding where to go. Other deciding factors when choosing a destination can be the season and the climate, as opposed to other places where there´s no sun, no beautiful beaches or, as an extreme example, are in full hurricane season. Then again, the reason can be purely random: a last minute decision, a very cheap airline ticket, etc. But above all, it is the advice, information and recommendations from friends and acquaintances that make us pick the spot. We decide where we´re going after others tell us how beautiful it is, we choose a hotel because someone says it´s good (and clean), even a country when a friend who´s been there says it´s safe. Choosing a holiday destination is usually based on a combination of all these factors, and yes, even a bad report or a modest guide can have a huge influence. This is why it´s so important that visitors are treated in the best way possible. When we get back home we tell our friends about our experience, and they in turn tell their own friends who won´t pass up on the opportunity to say that in such-and-such a place or in such-and-such a hotel something happened to make it irresistible or unthinkable to travel there. In the end, hundreds of people get to know about it. After all, word of mouth is the best advertising.

Breathe the Caribbean!
T
he town of Las Terrenas was founded in 1946 when the then President Rafael Leonidas Trujillo ordered that the poor people living in Santo Domingo city be relocated as farmers and fishermen to various provinces throughout the country. At the time, Las Terrenas was a tiny farming and fishing village centered mainly in Hoyo del Cacao, where the climate was better and, above all, the land was richer for cultivating. The few inhabitants lived in huts without water or electricity, with just local roads and no telephone communication, isolated from the rest of the country by the Samaná mountain range, the 17 km road linking it to the town of Sánchez was impracticable and getting here was an adventure. In the mid 70´s, Juan the Frenchman arrived and committed the folly of building the legendary Hotel
Tropic Banana (no longer standing). Tropic Banana marked the beginning of a change in the life of the entire community. Soon after, the first travelers started arriving who couldn´t stop talking about how wonderful the place was, mesmerized by the natural authenticity of this exceptionally beautiful area. These travelers brought their friends, paving the way for the first tourists. Over the years, that forgotten little town grew and the old fishermen’s huts were transformed into bars, restaurants, shops, etc. Word got around of the idyllic beauty of its deserted beaches, the green undulating landscape covered in thick majestic coconut groves, the smile of its inhabitants and, slowly but surely, Europeans from different countries came to witness this little bit of paradise and some even decided to stay. 21

owadays, Las Terrenas is a small cosmopolitan city, constantly improving its infrastructure and developing with the cultural contributions and experience of its new settlers. The local population is a mixture of Dominican and foreign blood, each person historically linked to the area regardless of whether they are descendants of the English slave trade or the Spanish occupation, or have Taino ancestry or stem from the more recent influx of expatriates. Las Terrenas is a true mixture of cultures and its name alone is testament to this since it comes from the French word “La Terrienne” (The Landowner), a name given by the filibusters (pirates) in the 17th century, specifically between the years 1630 and 1693. The charming city of Las Terrenas has two poorly paved streets, others unpaved, and 15 kilometers of fabulous beaches, which make this a truly spectacular paradise. Its most outstanding feature is its natural beauty, complemented by the nearby beaches, several natural parks and other wonders, such as Cayo Levantado, Los Haitises National Park, El Limón waterfall and watching the humpback
whales on their annual winter visit to Samaná Bay. This quirky town will fulfill every visitor´s wish, with restaurants offering culinary delights from around the globe, beach bars, every class of comfortable hotel, sports and leisure activities, shops, services and a unique peaceful atmosphere, a relaxed fun environment day and night. No wonder so many tourists decide to stay longer than planned! Going down bustling Duarte or Carmen streets which intersect at both ends of the town you will find they are full of the essence and charm of Dominican life. Both choc-o-block with shops of every kind, the constant coming and going along the sidewalks plunges you into the pulsating heart of the country. Taking a motoconcho (moto taxi) or a guagua (local bus) to get around, tasting sancocho (typical soup) or dulce de leche (like fudge) or shaking it up on the dance floor to the rhythm of bachata, are all experiences you dare not miss as they are the key to enjoying the generosity and joy of Dominican living to the full. 23
THE SEA OF ADVENTURES
P
eople get to Las Terrenas with preconceived ideas of what they´ll find: heavenly beaches, romance, bachata and merengue. However, the area of Samaná offers a lot more that sun and sea, breezes and palm trees. Given the extent of the area and its great biodiversity, not only is it an ideal destination to relax and bask in the sun, you can also enjoy rural tourism, pamper your palate and fall in love with tropical nature. Dare to explore the peninsula inland: on horseback, on a quad, a jeep, hiking or mountain biking, go deep into the peninsula’s natural reserves, you´ll love it, there are so many hidden spots, natural jewels, rivers, waterfalls, big and small wonders to discover. To start with, there are local farmers´ houses, interesting indigenous architectural models typical of this province. Built from palm wood and roofed with sheets of corrugated zinc, they are usually rectangular with a front porch and gable roof. They are noted for their effective ventilation thanks to the

skylights of varied and sometimes, super designs, installed above the door frames and windows. The simplicity of these little houses, with their bright colors and unique chromatic combinations, sometimes embellished by well-kept gardens or flowers in recycled containers, are small works of art. Taste the local cuisine: a burst of flavors in the purest Caribbean style. Apart from the classic dishes, such as the Dominican flag (meat, rice and beans), don´t forget to try the regional specialties such as fish in coconut sauce, manioc fritters and coconut or taro bread, which can only be found in the countryside. See some of your favorite exotic fruits plants close up, such as pineapple, mango, avocado, breadfruit or coffee and cocoa, and of course enjoy them in any one of the many picturesque fruit stalls. All your adventures will go hand in hand with the unforgettable, wonderful hospitality and communicative capacity of these rural people whose smiles will light up your memories for many years to come.

OBSERVATION OF HUMPBACK WHALES
I
f you ever get the chance, don´t pass up on the opportunity to observe the humpback whales in their natural mating and breeding environment.
These spectacular mammals weighing up to 40 tons can be seen in the bay´s warm waters from January to March. During the rest of the year, humpback whales live in the North Atlantic´s cold waters, but in winter months they undertake the arduous journey of more than 25,000 kilometers to reach tropical seas to mate and reproduce.
they show off. Like other large cetaceans, humpback whales were on the verge of extinction because of the whaling industry. By the mid-twentieth century, the population was reduced by 90% and it was not until 1967 that they were declared a protected species. Since then, populations have recovered, although only partially. However, they are still under constant threat from fishing nets, collisions with ships and pollution.
While they are here they stop feeding and live off their fat reserves, dedicating all their time to reproductive activities or caring for their young.
To learn more you can visit the Whale Museum in Santa Barbara de Samaná, which shows details of the epic journey that hundreds of these cetaceans make every year from the chilly northern sanctuaries down to the Bay of Samaná.

LOS HAITISES NATIONAL PARK
D
emarcated by the Bay of Samaná, Los Haitises National Park extends over 631 Km2 and is one of the country´s most beautiful landscapes, thanks to its geological formation and its flora, fauna, underground rivers, caverns and islets. Although Haitises means highland or mountain range, the park is famous for its numerous conical hills or mogotes, which are low mountainous promontories (ranging between 30 and 40 meters in height) and are scattered throughout the coastal area. Like the rest of the park, these mogotes are formations which emerged over the years. In addition to the numerous migratory species, the park is the safe haven for 110 out of the 230 bird species that live in the country. These birds usually inhabit the numerous cays, the most famous of them all being Cayo de Los Pájaros or Bird Cay, where hundreds of them, some with peculiar large 32
red bags on their chests, circle constantly. We still don´t know why they prefer this cay when they have more than 60 cays and islets to enjoy! The park´s geomorphologic karst formation spurs an important system of caves, among other things, which the Taino Indians, ancient settlers of the region, used as warehouses or as ritual sites. La Reina, San Gabriel and La Linea, displaying samples of pictographs and petroglyphs with great historical and archaeological value, are just some of the caves that can be visited. The average temperature is 25ºC with high humidity and frequent rains in the two largest vital areas of rain forest and tropical forest. Come and enjoy this National Park, the only one of its kind in the Caribbean.

EL LIMÓN WATERFALL
O
ne of the most outstanding natural beauties of Samaná is El Limón waterfall, a spectacular 40 meter cascade plummeting into a natural pool of cool, crystal clear waters. It´s located about 300 meters above sea level in a dense tropical rainforest. The waterfall originates at the point where the waters of Arroyo Chico empty into the El Limón River. There are four classic routes to the waterfall: El Café (with breathtaking views of the waterfall from the point where visitors leave their horses and continue on foot), Rancho Español, El Limón and Arroyo Surdido. Each route has stalls offering organized excursions, food and drinks for visitors.
the fall takes about an hour whether on foot and on horseback. Along the route, you will enjoy the island´s natural vegetation and native fauna. Once at the waterfall, the local youngsters won´t pass up the chance to show off their skills by climbing the steep, slippery rocks, before diving impressively into the pool below. The landscape around El Limón is beautiful, with small wooden houses painted in bright colors that blend in with the verdant surroundings. There is a minimum entrance fee to access the park. The money is used for the upkeep of the various trails and improving certain segments.
Normally the excursion is on horseback trekking through the damp tropical forest accompanied by a local guide, although the more daring and in good physical shape can make it on foot. The journey to 37

uch is the variety and quality of the beaches around Las Terrenas that everyone can find their dream beach. And the best thing is that they are all freely accessible, you won´t find all-inclusive hotels with striped parasols and the only shade to be had is under the coconut palms, almond trees and wild seagrape.
Frontón Beach An imposing marble cliff embraces the cove that houses this discreet, charming, unspoiled beach, characterized by its beautiful waters… perfect for those who love solitude. Practically inaccessible by land, Frontón Beach is a 20-minute boat ride from Las Galeras. Bring water and some food as there are no services on the beach.
Cosón Beach Stretching 7 kilometers, it´s perfect for walks and to enjoy. It has quiet bays, river mouths, wind for kite surfers and waves for surfers, places kitted out with sun loungers and other more solitary spots. Cosón Beach has everything you could wish for. There are not many places like it in the world.
El Valle Beach Yet another magnificent “Pirates of the Caribbean” style beach where the small restaurants are an invitation to try out the fresh fish caught that day by the local fishermen.
Rincón Beach Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic, this 3 kilometers long beach is a crystal clear turquoise lagoon nestled against a lush coconut plantation. It has stalls where you can eat and relax. 40
Morón Beach Located 15 minutes from the village of El Limón, this beach has a particular charm with its wide wooded lawn, golden sand, a sea of a thousand colors and a small islet in the middle of the bay called Limón Cay. Despite the presence of a residential complex with private restaurant, this beautiful beach is still a very quiet secluded place.

aturally, Las Terrenas is outstanding for all water sports: paddle boarding, surfing, kite surfing, swimming, windsurfing, snorkeling, etc., all can be enjoyed in this area thanks to the varied coastline. The peninsula is protected by coral reefs waiting to be discovered during a wonderful day´s snorkeling. Don´t miss out on the experience of scuba diving off Las Ballenas Cays, so named because of their shape. Even if you´re a beginner in any of these sports, the many schools in town cater to all levels, with courses for all ages and in every language! You can also practice your favorite sport: tennis, cycling, mountain biking, jogging, football, baseball, gym, Pilates, etc. If you like a rush, don´t miss the chance to experience zip lining at El Valle Beach. An extraordinary adventure in an unbeatable setting, “flying” over the San Juan River and lush tropical vegetation, zipping across from one hill to another is a unique experience that will stay etched in your memory forever.
