ocated in the province of Samaná, Las Terrenas was founded in 1946 by the then president of the republic Rafael Leonidas Trujillo who ordered that all the poor people living in Santo Domingo were to be relocated throughout the various provinces in the country as farmers and fishermen.
At the time, Las Terrenas was nothing more than a hamlet, with sandy roads and colored houses made of palm wood, scarcely populated by fishermen and a handful of farmers living in Hoyo del Cacao, where the climate was more favorable and the soil better for cultivating. These humble inhabitants earned their living by barter and lived in huts without running water, electricity or telephone and hardly any neighborhood roads. Isolated from the rest of the country: the road linking Las Terrenas to the town of Sánchez was practically impassable, until it was finally paved in 1989. Getting to this community was an adventure. Las Terrenas remained “hidden” even from the Dominicans themselves. The town had no electricity until 1994. 16

The first travelers began to arrive towards the end of the 70s, to visit the incredible beaches, defying the imposing hills of the Samanรก mountain range. These adventurers must have sworn to each other not to tell anyone about this unknown paradise. Obviously not everyone was able to keep the secret and little by little friends began to arrive and, soon after, friends of friends, paving the way for the first tourists who have not stopped growing in numbers since, bewitched by the nature and authenticity of this exceptionally beautiful place. Nowadays, the old village is one of the prettiest and most charming places in the country, a unique town that has continued to develop, becoming the economic driving force of Samanรก province and, with its cosmopolitan air, a reference point in terms of tourism for the entire Dominican Republic. Las Terrenas is renowned for its high number of foreign residents, haling from the four corners of the world and attracted by tourism and by the golden sandy beaches and clear waters. The friendly respectful community is made up of Dominicans and foreign residents in search of an 19
enriching lifestyle for everyone. Artists, retirees, merchants, people who love the good life, and, of course, professionals in the tourism industry, are part of this unusual social mix that makes Las Terrenas a town like no other, while keeping its original Caribbean character. Europeans are the most frequent visitors; mostly French, Italian and Spanish, although the number of American and Canadian visitors increases every year. Dominican, French, Italian, English, German, Brazilian and even Russian, are just some of the sounds that add color and joy to everyday conversations. Here we speak all languages, no barriers, going from one to another without effort. The mix of cultures that this atypical town hosts is reflected in the great variety of culinary delights from all corners of the world. Beach bars and cocktail bars, comfortable hotels of all categories, sports and leisure activities, shops and services and a unique and serene atmosphere, a casual fun atmosphere, day and night. Both streets are bursting with shops of all kinds and the constant bustle of the sidewalks envelops the visitor in the pulsating heart of the country. One of the best-known leisure areas in town is the Pueblo de los Pescadores, a row of 12 premises, between bars and restaurants. The most popular beaches are Punta Popy and Las Ballenas, both in town, as well as Playa Cosón and Playa Bonita just outside town. Tourism in the region is constantly growing due to large investments in tourist amenities, especially apartments, as well as villas, hotels, shopping malls, etc. Taking a “moto concho” (motor taxi) or the “guagua” (local bus) to get around: trying some “sancocho” (typical local soup) or “dulce con leche” (fudge) or launching yourself onto the dancefloor to the rhythm of bachata are all experiences not to be missed as part of the generous catchy gusto of living Dominican. 23
SANTA BÁRBARA DE SAMANÁ I
t was founded in 1756 by families from the Canary Islands under the supervision of Spanish governor Francisco Rubio y Peñaranda, and was named in honor of Queen Barbara de Braganza, the wife of King Ferdinand VI.
During the Haitian occupation, President JeanPierre Boyer invited African Americans from the United States to migrate to Haiti. Many of these families settled and prospered in Samaná. Their descendants are popularly known as Samaná Americans. This small coastal city, embraced by an impressive bay dotted with sailboats and flanked by green cliffs, maintains its fishing traditions, but, during the winter (between January and March) it becomes a very busy tourist destination thanks to the annual visit of more than 1,000 humpback

whales to the bay. The port is also the most popular starting point for boat trips to Los Haitises National Park and Cayo Levantado. Relax, enjoy the slow pace and the views of the boulevard facing the sea, surrounded by restaurants, shops and bars.
SÁNCHEZ V
isitors come to this town because it’s a starting point for excursions to Los Haitises National Park. However, without detracting from the importance of this natural attraction, Sánchez has historical and cultural values that could have made it an important tourist point. Its historic railway, now disappeared, was the only one in the country and transported agricultural products from the Cibao region in the center of the country to this port and then loaded and shipped to Santo Domingo. This gave rise to great economic, political and social development in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In 1906, the first branch of The Royal Bank of Canada was established, followed by the National Bank of Santo Domingo and the International Banking Corporation.
These houses built entirely of wood, stand out for their originality, elegance and adaptation to the subtropical climate. With very few exceptions, all that is left of most of them are the ruins of a splendid past that can (still) be enjoyed when visiting this municipality. Nowadays, the main economic activity in Sánchez is fishing, especially seafood, much appreciated in the country.

LAS GALERAS I
t is a municipal district within the municipality of Santa Bรกrbara de Samanรก. Las Galeras is located at the eastern end of the Samanรก Peninsula. It owes its name to the old warships known as galleys that were used to transport prisoners and slaves. In the middle of the 16th century, two of these galleys sent by the king of Spain moored here to avoid smugglers and pirates in the area. As it is off the beaten tourist track, Las Galeras has kept its very Dominican style with some small houses tucked among lines of coconut trees on a sundrenched beach dotted with boats owned by local residents. The region is famous for its beautiful beaches brimming with coconut trees. Playa Grande is a reference mark in the town where boat rides to Playa Rincรณn, Playa Frontรณn and Playa Madama

start. A short distance away we find La Playita, a white sand beach, which is the main destination for the locals. You can eat fresh fish dishes in the small restaurants on the beach and take a refreshing dip in the clear tropical waters.
EL LIMÓN T
he people of El Limón are mostly descendants of freed African-Americans from North America: Anderson, Jones, Wilmore, among others, are still common surnames. In 1819, Théodore Chassériau was born in this community. Son of a French father and Creole mother, he was a romantic painter who distinguished himself in France during the first decades of the 19th century. The French school in Las Terrenas is named in his honor.
has increased in the area with visits to its famous waterfall. El Limón is one of the main producers of yams, sweet potatoes and breadfruit in the country. Coconut production is still very prominent, although it has decreased considerably in recent years.
This municipal district, located about 14 km from Las Terrenas and 28 km from Santa Bárbara de Samaná, is famous for hosting the best-known waterfall in the country, an essential excursion for visitors. The economic activities in El Limón are the same as those throughout province: tourism, fishing and agriculture. Tourism, especially ecotourism, El Manantial (natural spring), along with its famous waterfall, are the best-known places in the municipality of El Limón. 27

SOME DREAM BEACHES

nclosed by the intense green of the vegetation of the Samaná Mountain Range, blue skies and turquoise seas, the many spectacular beaches in Las Terrenas and surrounding area are among the most beautiful in the country. But you won’t find too many umbrellas or beach bars around, the only shade is provided by the hundreds of thousands of coconut trees (Samaná has the highest density of coconut trees per square meter in the world).

Thanks to its location and proximity to the town, this beach is the social center of Las Terrenas and the venue for all kinds of events, both cultural and sporting, attracting crowds who come from all over the country to enjoy the water and eat and drink in one of the many nearby restaurants, especially on weekends. 28
Adorned with a maze of coconut trees and decked in golden sand, the wind conditions are ideal for kitesurfing (both beginners and expert) and almost perfect waves for paddle boarding. The car park built in 2019 somewhat detracted from its charm.
LAS BALLENAS
Located to the west of the town, the name of this beautiful beach is Maricó, but everyone knows it as Las Ballenas. This is because of the small rocky islets just offshore called Las Ballenas keys or Whale keys that resemble these amazing creatures. Stretching almost 2 km from the Pueblo de los Pescadores to the Maricó river, to which it owes its original name, this beautiful wide beach with shallow calm waters ideal for families offers a wide variety of services along the way. At the other end of the beach there is a small water sports center that rents canoes, kayaks and Hobie Cats. Like Playa Bonita, many hotels offer accommodation in front of this beach, so it is very well frequented, especially by people from the larger cities as well as tourists.
PLAYA BONITA
This beautiful beach is a natural wonder with calm crystal-clear waters and coconut trees gracefully dipping their fronds into the sea. Playa Bonita is located a few minutes from Las Terrenas and has numerous boutique hotels, private villas and exquisite restaurants, ideal for those looking for peace and quiet. It is one of the most impressive beaches in the whole of the Dominican Republic. A 10-minute drive west of downtown Las Terrenas, this soft golden beach is the continuation of Playa Bonita. It is approximately 6 kilometers long and ideal for long walks observing nature. The waves are tame, but not too tame to make Cosรณn a great place to surf, bodyboard and kitesurfing. Several boutique hotels, as well as a couple of typical restaurants can be found along the shoreline.

PLAYA FRONTÓN
This very isolated beach is accessible by a long trek overland (from Las Galeras or from Boca del Diablo), or by boat (about 20 minutes) from Las Galeras. An imposing cliff about 90 meters high, where rock climbing was once practiced, defines the cove that houses this charming modest unspoiled beach. With fine white sand adorned by innumerable green coconut trees, this beach is characterized by its beautiful crystal-clear turquoise waters full of sea urchins, perfect for snorkeling. Bring water and some food if you are going to stay there for a couple of hours... there are no facilities or amenities on the beach.
Until the middle of 2019, Playa Ermitaño was closed to visitors while the international television series Survivor was being filmed there. This beach owes its name to Juan “the hermit”, a repentant French pirate, who lived completely alone in the area for many years. Ermitaño has a mixture of turquoise waters combined with fine butter-colored sand. A minute away is Playa Onda, a small cove with crystal clear waters, a natural paradise. Bring some food and water as the beach has no services.
You can combine Playa Rincón and Playa Frontón on the same boat trip.
PLAYA ERMITAÑO / PLAYA ONDA At last we can enjoy this spectacular isolated beach, about 400 meters long, divided into two, accessible on foot from Las Canas beach (about 30 minutes) or by boat from Las Terrenas (40 minutes). 30

The small restaurants on this beautiful beach invite you to taste the fresh catch of the day. And if you want to stay overnight, several “eco hotels” offer accommodation immersed in the unspoiled nature of the area, a unique experience on the peninsula. The more adventurous can enjoy the spectacular twelve-cable zip line facilities nearby. Be careful when swimming, there are usually strong sea currents. Playa Rincón Playa El Valle
PLAYA RINCÓN
Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, it is approximately 3 kilometers long. The beach is a turquoise crystalline lagoon protected by a magnificent bay, nestled in a lush coconut plantation. It has beach bars where you can eat and chill out. On the way to Rincon you can visit the modest iguanarium in the town of Los Tocones and see some Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyluria cornuta) specimens, an endemic species of the island.

HUMPBACK WHALES
H
umpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are one of the largest whales in the world, adults measure between 12 and 16 meters and can weigh up to 38,000 kg. This species has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and knobbly head. It is an acrobatic animal that often leaps to the surface and then hits the water. The males emit a complex song which lasts ten to twenty minutes and repeats for hours. The reason they sing seems to be part of their mating ritual. Do not miss the chance to see these spectacular mammals in their natural environment in the warm waters of the bay, where they go to mate and reproduce every year, having travelled thousands of kilometers from the northern regions. During their stay they stop feeding and 33

live off their fat reserves accumulated during the winter, devoting all their time to mating or caring for their young. Of the entire Caribbean area, Samaná Bay is where you can see humpback whales closest.

EL LIMÓN WATERFALL
E
l Limón waterfall, which receives more than 100.000 visitors a year, is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country, and for many, in the entire Caribbean. Located 300 meters above sea level, the waterfall is fed by the Arroyo Chico stream and El Limón river. It comprises an area of 18 square kilometers which were decreed a protected area in July 1996. Access to this important protected area begins at the any one of the waypoints to be found along the El Limón - Samaná road. In addition to the excursion, these waypoints usually offer lunch and an assortment of crafts and typical products (cocoa, coffee, etc.). The route starting at El Café, near the town of El Limón, offers the best and most spectacular views 37
of the main waterfall. The other access routes start from the vicinity of Rancho EspaĂąol and offer glimpses of three secondary cascades before reaching the main one. The ride can be either on horseback or on foot, although sometimes it can be very muddy, and it usually takes 30 to 40 minutes. This tour takes place in a pleasant environment surrounded by coconut trees that become denser as you approach the fall. The main waterfall with its mossy walls and beautiful surroundings plummets about forty meters (130 feet) into a natural pool where you can cool off after the ride.
Young locals are often keen to show off their diving skills to the delight of tourists. A must for anyone visiting the SamanĂĄ peninsula. 2019 saw very little rain which affected the flow of water. 38

LOS HAITISES NATIONAL PARK
S
tretching over an area of 631 km2, this park located south of the Bay of Samaná, between the municipalities of Sabana de la Mar, Monte Plata and Samaná, boasts impressive landscape elements such as the Bay of San Lorenzo, numerous keys and mangrove forests. Los Haitises was declared a national park in June 1976. Excursions to the park are by boat, weaving between its numerous high islets or keys. The most famous islet is Los Pájaros, between Boca del Infierno and El Naranjo Arriba, easily recognized by the almost constant presence of low flying frigatebirds and pelicans. Los Haitises National Park, which in the Taíno language means highland or mountain land, for millions of years hid the extensive caves where the Taíno Indians peacefully lived for centuries. Petroglyphs and pre-Columbian drawings silently testify their presence. 40
Los Haitises National Park and its spectacular natural rock formations has boat excursions, caving and bird watching. Here there are beaches, rivers, caverns, native, endemic and migratory birds, manatees, reptiles, owls and dolphins. Los Pรกjaros key, named for the presence of hundreds of pelicans and frigatebirds constantly flying over it. 41
San Gabriel cave is considered the cathedral of the caves in the area. This park contains the largest sample of the Caribbean mangrove forests, where species such as red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) and white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) predominate. Despite the deforestation of the area, annual rainfall varies between 2000 and 2500 mm, making it one of the regions of the country where it rains more days a year. 42
Visit caves such as San Gabriel, considered the regional cave cathedral, Railroad Cave, La Arena, Shark Mouth, the latter under a key in the middle of the bay. They are nature’s relics. Willy Cave, Caño Hondo Cave, El Infierno, Puerta del Cielo are also in the vicinity. A river that runs about 300 meters to end in the west wing of the bay has its source in Puerta del Cielo cave. Navigating through the thick mangroves, surprising the pelicans, frigates or seagulls courting adds to the romanticism of the excursion in this exceptional site. In addition, there are the beaches of Punta Almendro, Punta El Chino, Punta Arena, the latter being the most visited and where you can purchase Creole food and handcrafts. The Caño Hondo, San Lorenzo, Caño del Chorro, Jibales, El Naranjo and Puerta del Cielo rivers, which border the cove, are tributaries rich in mangroves, crustaceans, cetaceans and fish.

aturally Las Terrenas is outstanding for all water sports: kitesurfing, surfing, paddle boarding, sailing, kayaking, diving, fishing, etc. Several schools offer different types of courses for all these disciplines, for all ages and in all languages. You can also practice your favorite sports: tennis, cycling, jogging, soccer, baseball, gymnastics, pilates... or take Latin dance classes, for example. Without a doubt Las Terrenas enjoys a sporting atmosphere! In mid-February, lovers of kitesurfing and water sports in general meet at Festivela at Punta Popy, a weekend devoted entirely to the competition. A very popular, refreshing and colorful event thanks to the slight of dozens of multicolored sails in the air. In May, the local Sailing Club organizes an important regatta at Las Ballenas beach. This qualifying competition for the national 44

sailing championship brings young people and adults together in the Optimist, Laser and Sun Fish categories. Two very intense days of competitions. Every year during the month of June the 100 km del Caribe is held, a 5-stage trail running competition that allows you to discover the wild nature of the island from a completely different angle. At the beginning of September, the Bay of Cosรณn hosted the third edition of the X Terra Samanรก, a mountain triathlon where local and international athletes compete to qualify for the World Cup in Maui (Hawaii). At the end of October, the Epic MTB Las Terrenas takes place in and around Las Terrenas and over the Samanรก mountain range. Individuals and pairs compete in this tough mountain bike competition over a 30 km circuit and an accumulated slope of 700 meters. It includes mountain-beach views, rapid descents, technical trails and planes. Welcome, enjoy an unforgettable vacation! 46
